A lot has been spoken about Three Houses. Story, characters, themes, you name it.
But what about Three Houses as a game? And all the choices made in each route which impact their difficulty?
Well, I started this project a week ago in my spare time to see what makes each route its own beast from a design perspective, and I think I've reached an answer of sorts. The results were a bit predictable with some paths, while with others it was arguably more.... surprising (click to check the whole thing).
The factors I took into account were:
Starting Roster (AKA who you get in Ch. 1 when you pick a House)
Available Church faculty.
Available Hero Relics, Sacred/Rare Weapons and equipment.
Available Battalions & Gambit.
When the Item Shop, Weaponry & Battalion Guild is updated stock-wise.
When each route stops throwing Intermediate Class enemies at you.
Difficulty curve, based on the Average Level of the enemies fought in each chapter's story mission + the Suggested Level the game wants you to do them.
And other route-specific quirks.
I wanted to consider a ton more stuff like map & enemy layout per route, but by that point the whole thing got super ambitious, so I decided to trim down the fat and keep what's essential for the overall experience in my opinion. Three Houses is kind of its own beast compared to most Fire Emblems, so I feel different factors had to be considered compared to the other games to deem what makes one route harder than the other and such.
Anyways, many thanks for checking this post! Let me know if anyone has any issue with some data, or has some ideas how to improve on it.
Oh, and it goes without mention that recruiting students from other houses makes the whole experience easy regardless of the route. So... there's that I suppose.

In the realm of silence, a gentle soul resides,
An autistic girl, seeking solace in world so wide,
Between the lines of human gaze, she yearns to break free,
For in the embrace of animals, she finds sweet harmony.
Unjudged, accepted, her true self finds reprieve,
Yet people seek responses she struggles to achieve.
Trapped in her mind, she longs for empathetic key.
A symphony of understanding, where her spirit can be free.
In the language of compassion, her heart longs to speak.
And through the whispers of nature, her voice she will seek.
Guided by nature's melody, her voice shall find its peak.
With each gentle breeze and rustling leaf, her spirit shall rise.
As the symphony of understanding sings and harmonizes.
Her spirit dances in the wind, where limitless freedom lies.
A beautiful ballet, unseen by human eyes.
In this enchanted realm, her heart takes flight,
Soaring through the clouds, embracing the light.
With each graceful movement, her spirit alight,
In the realm of silence, she finds pure delight.
In this world of stillness, she dances with grace,
A dancer of dreams, lost in time and space.
With each pirouette, her dreams leave no trace.
But in her heart, they find a sacred place.
A sanctuary of hopes, a refuge of dreams,
She dances with abandon, in vibrant themes.
A ballerina of wonder, where everything gleams.
Her movements are poetry, her body a dream.
As she twirls and spins, she lets her spirit beam.

Language of Devotion
Tumblr media
Spencer Reid x Fem! Reader
Summary: You caught Spencer learning a new skill—your native language
Trope: Fluff! just fluff
Warning: Language learning app inaccuracies, that’s it really. I wrote this in a frenzy and no proofreading was done
Main masterlist
Tumblr media
At around 6:30pm, you arrived at your boyfriend’s apartment complex with takeout on hand. The whole day you’ve spent slumped on your office desk, slaving away on documents that needed your attention and wishing time would move faster. You were knackered and planned to spend the rest of the evening charging within your boyfriend’s arms. You knocked twice on his mahogany apartment door but there was no answer.
“Spence. Spence,” you called out. “You there?”
Silence.
Strange, even though it was a week night, he mentioned that no call came in for a case—strictly paperwork day. You juggled the takeout to your other hand as you reached into your bag for the spare key with slight difficulty.
As you let yourself in the apartment, a ping sound echoed in the confined space. The source of the noise coming in from the bedroom door that was slightly ajar. You quietly placed all your items on the dining table and crept towards the room at the further end of the apartment.
Heart beating loudly on your chest, you peeked inside the room and breathed a sigh of relief. It was Spencer, hunched over his desk, furiously scribbling on a notebook and his phone light reflecting on his glasses.
“Hey Spencer,” you lovingly greeted and although you’ve already announced your presence multiple times earlier on, the sound of your voice made him jump and if you didn’t know any better, a whimper of fright also escaped his lips—he’d deny this, of course.
“Hey, Y/N,” he raked his hand through his hair. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
You smiled coyly. “Y’know for an agent, you’re awfully jumpy.”
He laughed, the tone of his voice warming your heart. “I was just busy with something,” his hands closing the notebook and pushing it aside, as if he didn’t want you to see what had occupied the entire capacity of his brain.
That intrigued you. Spencer wasn’t really the type to keep things hidden from you unless it’s case related and in which, he doesn’t bring it back home for him to study. When your relationship started that was one of your laid out boundary and he had respected and agreed to it—the days and nights that he’s not on call were meant to enjoy each other’s company.
You tried to creep closer, curious as to what he was doing. Being adept with your body language, Spencer tried to divert your attention—keyword ‘tried’. “What’s for dinner? I’m starving,” he rubbed his stomach for emphasis.
“I got us some pasta from the Italian place around the block,” you answered, still distracted by the secret contents of his notebook.
He wrapped his arms around you, seemingly intent on manhandling you out to the dining, before his idle phone notified with a green owl flashing on its screen and an automated voice in your first language spoke through the speaker: Dr. Reid, are you still there? Your chapter and lesson progress will not be counted should you exit.
You turned your head to watch Spencer’s cheeks turning pink.
“Spence, are you—are you using Duolingo?” A giggle escaping your lips. “To learn my first language?”
He smiled with a hint of guilt. “Uh—well, research published in Psychological Science indicates that multilingual individuals exhibit better attention control, cognitive flexibility, and problem-solving skills than monolinguals.”
“Uh-huh, that doesn’t explain why you’re learning my first language specifically.”
He caressed your cheek and smiled. “It’s the first language you learned to speak and it’s part of who you are, Y/N. I mean, you entered the US for your job as a translator,” he explained, staring into your eyes as if you were the most important thing in the world—you were, he assured, you and his mom were. “Do you know you only speak in your language when you mumble in your sleep? You dream in a language that I can’t understand and I want to know every side of you. I love you that much.”
You leaned in for a kiss, his care and adoration to you leaking out of him like honey and you were a bee unable to resist the sweetness. “That’s sweet of you, Spencer,” you pulled back and studied his hazel doe eyes as if they hold the key to the universe. “But I have to ask, does this also have something to do with my mom and dad flying in for a visit?”
He nodded. Last month you mentioned to him that your parents were visiting for four days before they fly to New York, where your other sibling was located. “I want them to get to know me and like me as your boyfriend and—and I can’t do that if we can’t understand each other.”
“They can speak English, granted it’s very much broken, but I can translate for you, Spencer, it’s no problem at all.” You assured him. “Plus, you’re a federal agent, that already makes you great in their books. My dad feels relieved that his own daughter is dating someone who could protect her and my mom already likes you—trust me on this. She hears how happy I am when I talk about you.”
“Are you sure?” He clarified again, clearly he was nervous in making a good impression. You were his first girlfriend and he wanted the relationship to last for a long time—forever really, if you’d let him.
“Yes, Spence. If you want, I can teach you the basics just to get you by. Duolingo isn’t really that accurate,” you mentioned as you pulled him out of the bedroom and into the dining. “Now, let’s eat. I’m hungry and the pasta has turned cold.”
He laughed, nodding his head, watching you prep the table as he reheated the pasta based exactly on the packaging instructions.
And on the first night of your parent’s arrival, your mother pulled you aside and smiled. “He’s a keeper, Y/N. Don’t let him get away.”
You laughed as you watched Spencer try his best to communicate with your father in his broken grammar and questionable pronunciation. “I won’t, Mom. I think he’s it for me, really.”

Rest Assured - Jamil Viper x reader
4 times you see Jamil nearing his breaking point and the 1 time you intervene
Tumblr media
You’ve always prided yourself on being observant. Some might call it nosy, but you prefer thoughtful. After all, if you didn’t keep an eye on things, who would? Especially when it came to someone like Jamil Viper, who, despite his best efforts to appear unfazed, was absolutely not fine.
And lately, it’s been like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
The guy was practically doing everything—cooking, cleaning, managing Kalim, studying, practicing, and dealing with an endless amount of Scarabia chaos. But today? Today felt like the universe decided to crank up the difficulty setting on his life, and you were determined to intervene. But first, you needed to observe.
Tumblr media
Instance 1: Spaghetti Saga
It began in the kitchen, where Jamil was, unsurprisingly, cooking for the entire dorm. Kalim, bless his overly-enthusiastic heart, had announced a Scarabia Spaghetti Spectacular—an idea that seemed innocent enough on the surface. Until you realized that Kalim had no intention of helping. Well, he tried. Keyword: tried.
“Jamil! Jamil!” Kalim ran into the kitchen, arms full of ingredients that had no business being in spaghetti. “Look! I found some strawberries! And these marshmallows! They’d go perfectly in the sauce, right?”
Jamil froze mid-stir, his hand gripping the spoon so tightly you were concerned it might snap in two. Slowly, he turned to face Kalim, a polite but strained smile plastered across his face. “Strawberries? In spaghetti sauce?”
Kalim nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah! It’s sweet, right? Sweet is good!”
Jamil’s eye twitched, just a little. “Kalim… no.”
“But—”
“No strawberries. No marshmallows. Please.”
Kalim deflated slightly but wasn’t deterred. “Okay! No problem! I’ll just add them to the salad instead.”
Before Jamil could react, Kalim darted off, presumably to wreak havoc on the next innocent dish. You caught the moment Jamil whispered to himself, “I’m in hell.”
And that was only the beginning.
Tumblr media
Instance 2: Basketball Breakdown
The next incident occurred during basketball practice. Now, Jamil was usually the best player on the court, no question. Quick reflexes, sharp strategy—he could wipe the floor with the other teams without even breaking a sweat. But today?
Today, it was like he forgot what a basketball was.
It started innocently enough. A pass here, a dribble there, nothing out of the ordinary. But then one of the players tossed him the ball, and Jamil, in a moment that defied all logic and reason, missed it entirely. The ball smacked him square in the face with an audible thud.
The gym went silent. You could hear the collective gasp from the team, all eyes on Jamil, who stood there frozen, gripping his nose.
“Jamil!” Kalim shouted from across the court, jogging over. “Are you okay? Here, I brought some ice just in case!” He whipped out a handful of ice cubes from his pocket, offering them as if this was a totally normal thing to do.
Jamil stared at him, then at the ice cubes, and for a brief moment, you swore you saw his soul leave his body. But instead of snapping, he simply nodded, took the ice cubes, and walked off the court in silence, leaving everyone else standing there in stunned confusion.
“Did he just—?” one of the players started to ask, but you shook your head. “Don’t.”
You made another mental note. This was getting serious.
Tumblr media
Instance 3: Paperwork Pandemonium
After practice, you found Jamil in his dorm room, surrounded by a sea of paperwork. And, of course, Kalim was there too, oblivious to the storm brewing in Jamil’s head.
“Jamil, can you help me organize these?” Kalim asked, holding up a stack of papers. “I don’t really know what half of them are, but they seem important!”
Jamil glanced at the pile with a deadpan expression. “Kalim, that’s the inventory for the next three months. You were supposed to file this weeks ago.”
Kalim blinked, still smiling. “Oh… well, I knew it was important!”
Jamil’s fingers twitched as he grabbed the papers from Kalim, scanning them quickly. “These are all overdue. We’re going to get fined if we don’t submit them by tomorrow.”
Kalim’s eyes widened in horror. “Tomorrow?! Oh no! What are we gonna do?”
Jamil took a deep breath, visibly restraining himself. “We aren’t going to do anything. I am going to fix this. Again.”
Kalim, ever the optimist, beamed. “Thanks, Jamil! You’re the best!”
And with that, he was off to who knows where, leaving Jamil alone in the paperwork disaster zone. You watched as he stared at the pile in front of him, his eye twitching again. He muttered something under his breath—something you were pretty sure wasn’t very polite.
You added another mental note. He was hanging by a thread.
Tumblr media
Instance 4: The Final Straw (Almost)
The fourth instance happened later that evening, when you found Jamil in the library, supposedly studying for finals. But when you approached his table, you found him sitting there, staring blankly at a textbook. His pen was poised over a page, but he hadn’t written a single word.
“Hey,” you said softly, sitting down next to him. “How’s studying going?”
He didn’t answer at first, just continued staring at the book like it held all the answers to his existential crisis. Finally, he sighed. “I can’t do this.”
You frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I can’t… I can’t handle all of this. Kalim. Finals. The dorm. Everything.” He ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident in his voice. “It’s too much.”
You stared at him for a moment, then reached over and gently placed your hand on his. “You don’t have to handle it all by yourself, you know.”
He looked up at you, exhaustion clear in his eyes. “Who else is going to do it? Kalim? The other students? No one can do it like I can.”
You could hear the defeat in his voice, the resignation. He truly believed he was stuck in this never-ending cycle of responsibilities, with no way out.
That was it. You’d seen enough.
Tumblr media
The Fifth Time’s the Charm: Break Time for Jamil
Without another word, you grabbed Jamil by the arm and pulled him out of the library. He barely had the energy to protest, following you like a zombie as you led him to a quiet, secluded spot in the courtyard. Once there, you gently pushed him down onto a bench.
“Sit,” you ordered, and to your surprise, he didn’t argue.
He sat there, looking completely drained, his usual sharpness dulled by exhaustion. You sat next to him, feeling your heart twist as you saw just how close he was to breaking down. This wasn’t the Jamil you were used to—this was someone who had been running on fumes for way too long.
You didn’t even think. You just acted. Before he could react, you wrapped your arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug.
Jamil stiffened at first, clearly not used to such open displays of affection. But after a few seconds, he slowly relaxed, leaning into your embrace like a man who had been drowning and finally found a lifeline.
“I’m so tired,” he whispered, his voice barely audible.
You hugged him tighter, resting your chin on his shoulder. “I know. You’ve been doing too much for too long. You need a break.”
“I can’t,” he muttered, shaking his head. “There’s too much to do.”
“Screw the to-do list,” you replied. “You’re not a machine, Jamil. You need to rest, or you’re going to collapse.”
For a moment, he didn’t say anything, just leaned into you, letting himself be vulnerable in a way you’d never seen before. You could feel the tension slowly draining from his body, the weight of his responsibilities finally lifting, if only for a moment.
And then, before you knew it, he was asleep.
You blinked in surprise, looking down at his head resting in your lap. His breathing had evened out, and his face, usually so guarded and composed, was now relaxed in peaceful slumber.
You couldn’t help but smile, gently running your fingers through his hair. He needed this more than he’d ever admit. And you? You were more than happy to be his pillow.
Jamil didn’t wake up for a while, and when he finally did, it was gradual, the soft sunlight filtering through the trees casting a warm glow over the courtyard. His lashes fluttered against your lap, his brows furrowing slightly in confusion as he blinked awake. The moment he realized where he was, nestled against you, his cheeks flushed and honestly, he looked adorable.
“I—” Jamil began, his voice thick with grogginess as he pushed himself up, wincing at the stiffness in his muscles. “Did I fall asleep?”
You offered a soft smile, brushing a few strands of his hair away from his face. “Yep. Right in my lap, too. You must’ve been really tired.”
His eyes widened, and the blush on his cheeks deepened. Jamil rarely let his guard down, but right now, he looked almost vulnerable, caught between embarrassment and gratitude. “I’m… sorry, I didn’t mean to—”
“Jamil,” you interrupted gently, placing a hand on his arm to keep him from sitting up fully. “Don’t apologize. You’ve been running yourself ragged, and you finally let yourself rest. I’m glad you did.”
He stared at you, as if he wasn’t quite sure how to respond. His shoulders sagged, and for once, he didn’t try to fight it. He stayed close to you, his body still angled toward yours, like he couldn’t quite bring himself to pull away completely.
You could see it, the weight of the exhaustion he’d been carrying for so long. The lines of stress etched into his face, the constant need to be on alert. Jamil had always been the responsible one, the one who took on everyone else’s burdens. But now, in this moment, you wanted to be the one to take care of him.
“Hey,” you said softly, threading your fingers through his hair again, watching as his eyes fluttered shut for a moment. “How about we get out of here? Take a break. A real break.”
Jamil’s eyes opened, and he frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, let’s go somewhere. Just the two of us. Somewhere far away from all of this. No Scarabia, no endless responsibilities. Just… us.” You leaned in a little closer, lowering your voice as if you were sharing a secret. “You deserve it, Jamil. You’ve done more than enough. It’s time to take care of yourself.”
He hesitated, his frown deepening, as if the very idea of abandoning his duties was too much to comprehend. “I can’t just leave… there’s too much to do. Kalim—”
“Will be perfectly fine,” you interrupted, your tone leaving no room for argument. “And besides, I think Kalim would be all for this. In fact, I bet he’d love the idea.”
Jamil looked unconvinced, but before he could argue further, you gave him a gentle nudge. “Think about it. You could actually relax for once. No one bothering you, no one asking for a hundred different things at once. Just peace and quiet. Doesn’t that sound nice?”
He glanced down at his hands, clearly mulling over your words. You could tell he was struggling with the thought of letting go, even just for a little while. Jamil had been in control for so long, it was hard for him to imagine a world where he didn’t have to be.
But you weren’t about to let him slip back into that cycle.
Reaching out, you gently cupped his cheek, tilting his head up so he was looking at you again. “You don’t have to do this alone. I’m here, Jamil. Let me take care of you for a change.”
His breath caught at your words, and for a long moment, he just stared at you, something soft and unspoken passing between you. Slowly, almost hesitantly, he leaned into your touch, his eyes slipping closed as he exhaled a long, weary breath.
“I don’t know if I know how to relax,” he admitted quietly.
You chuckled softly, brushing your thumb across his cheek. “Good thing you’ve got me then. I’ll teach you.”
There was a beat of silence, and then, with a small sigh, Jamil opened his eyes again, his gaze meeting yours. “You really think we could just… leave? Just like that?”
“Absolutely,” you said, the determination clear in your voice. “We’ll go somewhere beautiful, somewhere quiet. No one to bother us. Just you, me, and a whole lot of nothing.”
Jamil let out a breathless laugh, shaking his head slightly. “And what about Kalim? He’s bound to make a mess of things if I’m gone too long.”
“Don’t worry about him,” you said with a grin. “We’ll get him on board. Heck, Kalim will probably help us pack.”
And as if summoned by your words, Kalim himself appeared around the corner, grinning ear to ear like he’d just heard the best news of his life. “Did someone say vacation? I am so in!”
Jamil stared at him, his expression caught between disbelief and mild exasperation. “Kalim—”
Kalim bounded over to you both, practically vibrating with excitement. “Oh, Jamil, this is perfect! You’ve been working so hard lately, you totally deserve a break! You should l go somewhere fun! Ooh, maybe a beach? Or the mountains! Or, ooh, how about a floating island? I heard there’s one with the best sunrises!”
“Kalim—” Jamil tried again, but Kalim was on a roll.
“I’ll even help you pack! I can get everything ready! Don’t worry about Scarabia, I’ve got it all covered!” Kalim’s grin widened as he clapped Jamil on the shoulder. “You just focus on relaxing!”
Jamil blinked, looking thoroughly overwhelmed by Kalim’s sudden enthusiasm. “I… don’t know what to say.”
“How about ‘yes’?” you teased, nudging him again. “Come on, Jamil. You deserve this. Let yourself have something nice for once.”
Jamil glanced between you and Kalim, clearly torn. You could see the conflict in his eyes, the part of him that still wanted to cling to his responsibilities, to keep everything in order. But then, slowly, his expression softened. He let out a quiet sigh, rubbing the back of his neck.
“…Fine,” he muttered, his lips curving into a small, tired smile. “But only if you promise we’re not going anywhere too ridiculous.”
Kalim’s eyes lit up, and he practically bounced on the balls of his feet. “Yes! Don’t worry, I’ll find the perfect spot! You’ll love it!”
But before Kalim could dash off in a whirlwind of excitement, there was a sound behind you that made you groan inwardly—Crowley.
The headmaster sauntered into view, his usual over-the-top grandeur evident in every step. “Vacation, you say? Oh, I’m afraid that won’t be possible! You see, I was just about to ask you two for some assistance with a few important matters—”
Before he could finish, Jamil stood up sharply, his expression darkening. For once, it wasn’t the usual calm, collected Jamil standing in front of you. This Jamil was one step away from grabbing Crowley by the collar and shaking him like a rag doll.
“Headmaster,” Jamil began, his voice low and dangerous, “I have been running this dorm, managing everything from meals to paperwork, while studying and handling Kalim’s disasters for months. I have not had a break. I am this close to losing my mind.”
Crowley blinked, clearly taken aback by Jamil’s sudden intensity.
“If you try to take this vacation from me,” Jamil continued, his tone flat but terrifying, “I swear I will not be responsible for what happens next.”
Crowley opened his mouth to protest, but one look at Jamil’s expression—wild-eyed, teetering on the edge—was enough to make him think twice. “Ah, well, I suppose the matters can wait! Yes, yes, of course! You both deserve some time off. Enjoy your… rest.”
Jamil didn’t wait for any further confirmation. He grabbed your hand, pulling you to your feet, and shot Crowley a glare that could have melted steel. “We’re leaving. Now.”
You tried to suppress your laughter as Jamil practically dragged you away, Kalim bouncing along happily beside you.
Once you were a safe distance from the courtyard, Jamil finally slowed down, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. He glanced down at you, his hand still holding yours.
“You really think this is going to work?” he asked, a hint of skepticism in his voice.
You grinned, squeezing his hand gently. “Absolutely. I’ll make sure of it.”
For the first time in what felt like forever, you saw Jamil smile—a real, genuine smile, soft and full of relief. He leaned in closer, his voice low as he whispered, “Thank you. For… everything.”
Your heart fluttered as he pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, lingering just a little longer than necessary. “You deserve it,” you whispered back, resting your head on his shoulder. “And I’ll be right there with you the whole time.”
Jamil chuckled softly, wrapping an arm around your waist as you both walked off, Kalim already rambling about potential vacation spots. But for now, you didn’t care where you were going. All that mattered was that it would be the two of you together.

So okay, my harping on about D&D 5e actually being relatively complex isn't to say "and that's why D&D 5e is bad," it's to address the idea that D&D 5e is easy to learn (it's clearly not: despite its market dominance a lot of people actively resist learning it and also a lot of people are also teaching it wrong). But there is more to it than that: D&D 5e has implemented design decisions that make it harder to learn than some of its predecessors.
Part of this is down to the insistence on using natural language for what is, ultimately, still a heavily keyworded system, meaning to ambiguity arising from when it's unclear whether a given phrasing refers to a keyword.
Part of it is down to absolutely bizarre moon logic that has actually made the game harder to understand. During an early playtest the game had a relatively simple action economy: a character could move and do a single action. This was done to address the "difficulty" of the action economy of D&D 4e. Now, 4e actually has a pretty dang simple action economy of a standard, move, and minor action; the reason it tends to slow people down is because it leads to analysis paralysis, with players trying to optimize those three actions to the best of their ability. So the slowing down effect of the action economy of 4e was actually misidentified as it being too difficult.
Now the simplification of the action economy into action and move is actually something I can get behind. But once the designers realized that dang 4e was actually kind of cooking when it introduced an extra action characters could do in addition to a movement and an attack and they were forced to deviate from their action and move model. And they introduced the bonus action.
The bonus action is, in many ways, similar to D&D 4e's minor action, but worse in every possible way. Bonus actions come with a bunch of limitations, exceptions, special edge cases governing when they can take place during a round, some of them have special triggers that need to happen first before you can use them. And then there's the entirely artificial limitation on number of spells a character can cast per round which adds unnecessary complexity.
All of which is to say: arguably more complex games can be easier to teach than D&D 5e because they are actually better written and make use of design techniques that actually improve learning, such as templating and keywording, and don't have bizarro universe action economies that make Rolemaster 2e's action economy seem relatively straightforward.

Hello! I am trying to read “the right to maim” by jasbir k puar and I am getting almost nothing out of it, bc of the depth + breadth of academic concepts :( I’m particularly frustrated by it bc it seems to talk about subjects I think about, talk about and do daily, like disability, transness, and (anti)colonialism. I’m most of the way through the intro and it’s gone almost entirely over my head except for a couple isolated paragraphs that are meaningful.
Do you have any advice for how I can get the most out of this book? My main limiter is time, bc I got it out from the library and it is highly requested so I can’t have it for very long
Hi anon! First of all, in terms of time, I recommend piracy. I recommend it in general. I'm not going to post links here in order to protect the places I use, but dm me if you want them.
If you're having difficulty with the concepts (which makes sense - right to maim is a challenging book!) I recommend going back to basics with some background reading. You can get some of Puar's rec'd background reading from the bibliography, and from the keywords she uses in the preface of the text. a few that I see (i'm looking at the PDF now) include debility, rhizome/rhizomatic, soverignty, biopolitics, homonationalism, impairment [in the disability studies sense], precarity, and neoliberalism. if i was teaching this preface, i'd have students break down each of these terms (and probably others, this is just from a skim) using outside readings. it's totally normal to feel overwhelmed when jumping into a scholarly text w/o any context, and most people who use and cite this book have past experience reading Puar's interlocutors and existing familiarity with this language.
you can get up-to-date while reading using resources in tandem with this text. For example, you can read Puar's discussion of debility at that link to get a sense of the context. You can read a decent summary of Foucault (the coiner of the term "biopower") and his thought at Brittanica. I recommend using Google Scholar for terms you're not familiar with, and taking quick notes so that you don't have to google them all over again each time. if you think you have enough context with a new word but aren't 100%, keep reading and use other clues. think about academic reading like learning a new language. the strategies are very similar! because it basically is.
I recommend using the annotation strategies i just mentioned in this post (and/or developing your own). i also recommend looking up Puar's talks on youtube - she's a well-known scholar who does a lot of events, and has spoken extensively about this book and its genealogy (especially in relation to praxis / Palestinian liberation). You can also read her talk with the hosts of Death Panel, my absolute favorite podcast.
Below, I'm going to give you an example of how I close-read, annotate, and analyze a paragraph from Right to Maim (and, by extension, other academic texts. This strategy may not work for you 100%, but hopefully it gives you some solid suggestions. Overall, remember that learning to read scholarly work takes time. A long ass time. Even when it's about things you've experienced yourself! Academia has its own conventions, verbiage, knowledge base, etc, and it's a learning curve for everyone. Don't expect yourself to read as fast or get as much as someone more familiar with the conventions of academic writing - anticipate reading all of these works many, many times, and getting more with each reading. Progress is more important than perfection, and improvement, even if slow, *will* happen, as long as you don't give up. <3
Below is a quote from the preface to Right to Maim, where Puar lays out her argument. I recommend everyone highlight/remember paragraphs like these (pretty much every ac text will have something like this in the beginning as a roadmap) to anchor their reading practice and help them get the most from a book (emphasis mine):
In The Right to Maim, I focus less on an important project of disability rights and disability studies, which is to refute disability as lack, as inherently undesirable, and as the sign, evidence, or fetish of injustice and victimhood. I am not sidestepping this issue. Rather, I centralize the quest for justice to situate what material conditions of possibility are necessary for such positive reenvisionings of disability to flourish, and what happens when those conditions are not available. My goal here is to examine how disability is produced, how certain bodies and populations come into biopolitical being through having greater risk to become disabled than others. The difference between disability and debility that I schematize is not derived from expounding upon and contrasting phenomenological experiences of corporeality, but from evaluating the violences of biopolitical risk and metrics of health, fertility, longevity, education, and geography.
In the bolded part, Puar outlines what she's not doing: she's not taking a mainstream (white, colonial) disability studies approach, which is, in her words, to refute disability as "lack." She's stating that her goal isn't simply to prove disabled people as equal to able-bodied people, or to claim that disability can be good and liberating (though it is/can be!). Her point is to look at the conditions in which people become disabled, and stay disabled. Often, these conditions are violent and unjust. Acknowledging this injustice kinda throws a wrench into western models of disability pride.
So, if she's not interested in just arguing that disability ≠ badness, what is she arguing? she's looking, in the latter half of the paragraph, to how people become disabled in multiple ways. One, using the verbiage in the book, she's interested in how people become debilitated - physically incapacitated in a way that may not line up with the social category of "disability"). She's also interested in how "disability" as a social identity is constructed - that is, why do disability rights groups look at Palestinians maimed by the IOF and see an injured civilian, but not a disabled comrade? words and context matter immensely. she's looking at why, and what are the implications.
that last sentence sums up the distinction she's making: "The difference between disability and debility that I schematize is not derived from expounding upon and contrasting phenomenological experiences of corporeality, but from evaluating the violences of biopolitical risk and metrics of health, fertility, longevity, education, and geography."
the difference, she argues, between disability as western disability studies sees it and debility as experienced by people under colonial occupation isn't because we experience our bodyminds differently, or because Palestinians (for example) magically aren't as hurt by occupation as their white/western counterparts would be. rather, the reason she's using debility over disability is because the category of disability isn't objective: it's informed by biopolitical forces such as the ones she listed. her meta-argument is that what we call "disability" can't be divorced from its settler colonial context, not because colonized peoples are immune to disabling violence, but because the category of disability (and health, and violence) is itself affected by settler colonialism.
in "right to maim," Puar is offering a major shift in the way we collectively discuss disability, because the category is not applied equally across sociopolitical, geographical context. it means Palestinians and others living under occupation are either left out entirely, or unsuccessfully co-opted into western-/colonizer-centric disability discourse that doesn't acknowledge the different conditions under which they live. ultimately, "right to maim" means to make that difference, and its implications, visible.
Let me know if this makes sense! it's wordy and tedious, but lots of academic texts are. i hope that breakdown helps you make some more sense of Puar's main argument/the architecture of the text, and maybe serves as a model for future engagement. :)

Okay, when Many-Faced Strangers came out I, like everyone else, immediately wanted to make a Thousand Blades Style character. But I didn't just... Have a pre-existing set of swords lying around that I could use, so I figured I needed to make my own! So I did! Five jade swords, one for each color, commissioned by the Empress for a lover, coming together to make something even greater than the sum of their parts.
Tumblr media
The goal of these swords is to synergize well with the style, while feeling reasonably different from each other. I figured that, in the end, this is gonna be a pretty mote-hungry combat style, and I'm definitely right. So the air sword helps alleviate that by letting you gain extra motes in combat. The wood sword causes and exploits wounds by causing roses to grow within your foe's bloodstream, while the water sword drowns your enemy in onslaught penalties. The fire sword is all about relentless offense, while the earth sword makes you and your allies unbreakable.
Overall, the design is geared towards "these evocations and Thousand Blades Style make a full combat kit." You probably aren't picking up many native combat charms, after all, you're rocking fifteen dots worth of artifact weapons!
Rose-Amongst-Thorns (Green Jade Daiklave •••)- This green jade blade is inlaid with golden roses, the poetry on it extolling the hardships of surviving with one's lover, and the slow overcoming of heartbreak. It was grown from a single perfect flower by the Worm-Eaten Woman, infused with boundless natural essence. (takes advantage of wound penalties, lets you use a pinning gambit) Evocations of Rose-Amongst-Thorns - At the beginning of each round of combat, a wielder attuned to Rose-Amongst-Thorns can spend a willpower to reduce her wound penalty by 1 for that round. With all five daiklaves of the Panoply attuned, she may instead halve her wound penalty for the same duration by spending 3 motes.
Blossoming Wounds Cost: 3m Type: Supplemental Keywords: Decisive-Only, Stackable, Resonant Duration: Instant Prerequisites: None Thorns spread through her foe's blood, bringing pain to his heart. If the wielder's decisive attack deals 3+ damage, it increases the victim's wound penalty by 1 until the end of the scene. This penalty can stack up to (essence) times, but can only be applied once per attack. Resonant: A resonant wielder unlocks this charm upon first attuning to this artifact as long as she has a major or defining tie representing love or loyalty.
Vinegrasp Bloom Cost: 4m (+4i) Type: Simple Keywords: Decisive-only Duration: One scene Prerequisites: Blossoming Wounds The lover plants her blade in the ground, and vines spring forth, chaining her enemies. The wielder makes a special difficulty 4 gambit to entangle her enemies. An enemy within short range, as well as anyone in close range of them, becomes entangled on a success. Until he moves, he must make a disengage roll to move, as he disentangles himself from the grasping vines. While this evocation is active, the sword is planted in the ground, and cannot be used for any other actions. The wielder may reclaim the sword with a ready action weapon to end the effect early.
Nature Takes its Toll Cost: 5m, 1wp Type: Simple Keywords: Decisive-only, Resonant Duration: Instant Prerequisites: Vinegrasp Bloom, Essence 2 Vines press through the victim's blood, a pain comparable only to true heartbreak. A decisive attack made with this evocation poisons its target on a successful hit. This toxin deals 2i damage (lethal in crash), duration (essence+stamina) rounds, and causes thorns to grow from the victim's injuries, doubling their wound penalty for the duration of the poison. The poison does not otherwise impose a penalty. Resonant: A resonant wielder waives this charm's willpower cost.
Roses Paid in Blood Cost: 5m Type: Supplemental Keywords: Decisive-only Duration: Instant Prerequisites: Nature Takes its Toll, Essence 3 Roses bloom within the bloodstream, raining forth in a beautiful yet terrible display. A decisive attack enhanced by this charm deals additional dice of damage equal to the target's wound penalty. This charm can only be used once per scene.
Okay, this is only actually one of the swords, the Green Jade Rose-Amongst Thorns. If you want to see the rest, they're 100% free on my patreon, and I'd love if you take a look there. I'm happy to hear feedback or any questions anybody has about them! I am super happy with these swords and I just really wanted to share! I hope everybody else likes them as much as I do!

The second playable version of Blood Tithe is now public!
Blood Tithe is a TTRPG in which you play a group of Vampires trying to survive and thrive. They will have to defend humans from other monsters but at the same time defend themselves from humans that don’t want to have their blood sucked. Of course, they are powerful beings, and might have ambitions beyond mere survival that they’re trying to achieve. But no matter how powerful a vampire becomes, in the end they are still a slave to their thirst
Check it out if you're interested and come to the playtest discord if you want to discuss the game.
If you struggle to read the white on black text, there's also a version that is black on white
Changelog under the read more
Fixed various spelling and grammar errors
added the concept of associated primary attributes and adjusted starting attributes accordingly
notably you can no longer have more than one 3
added the option to defend engagements with AWR instead of SPD
added roles as a guide to build more balanced groups
added the Mage archetype as well as a bunch of Magicks
the Magick previously called Burn is now Shock and Burn has an entirely different effect
added the Bind sorcery
clarified how Break Free works when you are grabbed with a whip
Added an On Failure effect for Targeted Accelerate/Decelerate and Daze (I think I just forgot them previously?)
Added Perks, the primary way of becoming more powerful as well as another way to diversify your character
now each skill that risks strain mentions this explicitly
Protect and Take Aim no longer risk strain
Reworked Hex’s “can use only body attacks” mode to instead inflict a heavy penalty when using a non-body attack skill
added a penalty to Aim while engaged with a hostile character
Changed Aim and Subdue to be equal to instead of higher than to succeed, which was my intention all along, idk why I screwed that up
Buffed the failure effect on Teleport
Renamed Ranged Defense to Entrenchment
Added Threats, a new category of enemy difficulty
added the Pixie as an example Threat
Added rules for Legends
added the Wyvern of Fire as an example Legend
Added the keyword Fast for skills that affect the current turn
changed the example for a specific rule beating a general rule in Rule 0 accordingly
Reworked how skills that deal damage based on STR work
this also allowed me to get rid of the maneuver damage cap
reduced the impact of SPD on rolling engagement
reworked how running is resolved to make it much easier to run away
added the option to take a character you’re grabbing with you when breaking an engagement or joining another
added the option to escape
removed the restriction preventing you from using a shield while unarmoured. Don’t remember why that was there in the first place
renamed the engagement roll to the movement roll to better differentiate it from all the other things named engagement
made a general rule for what happens when you roll 0 dice instead of writing the same thing each time
renamed Werewolf Claws and Werewolf bite to more generic names so non-werewolf monstrous enemies can use them too
changed the base attack of Grab or pin to be based on STR so strong character have an easier time grabbing someone while weaker characters have a harder time.
Added a fly spell and a leap maneuver to deal with the new flying enemies
Added the upkeep phase to combat, which doesn’t really change anything but should hopefully make things more clear
added stealth as one aspect of Awareness so now there’s finally a stat for stealth

Seventeen's Sexual Energy (MTL to be good in Bed)
Disclaimer: No facts, all alleged, this is my interpretation of the cards.
Okay, going to start doing these on the weekend, as this one can take a bit long to do. I wanted to do one for this group first and work through the other requested ones I got. I wanted to see what I can get from them in this aspect. I haven't done a reading for them in a while, so that I would dedicate a reading to them.
Woozi (Sagittarius/Queen of Swords/King of Swords)
I am liking what I am seeing from the cards first look, but let's dig in, before I come to that conclusion. I say he enjoys exploring and experimenting when it comes to sex. He is someone who likes to learn, and he is vocal in bed and expects his partner to speak their mind to. I say he can be a bit detached emotionally, and he can be heavily focused on the optics of it all. He is willing to listen to his partners input and what they want him to do to please him.
He also seems pretty open-minded about things, so if you want something, just ask. He seems to be a pretty generous and a giving lover and has a bit of that dominant energy, but not too much. He may like to take the lead. He is very sexual and passionate. He is creative and carefree and wants to have fun and enjoy sex as much as he can. I don't see him being all that emotional, but he seems pretty fun and spontaneous, and his lover will most likely be in it for a wild ride. He is a freaky one.
Yup, like his energy the best so far, so up to the top lol
Jeonghan (Trine/8 of Wands/The High Priestess)
I love using these astrology card, because the keywords are awesome for this reading, one keyword is lubricate haha, sex is a great experience, he gets into the flow of things. I think things go much more smoothly for him and he just gets into the zone of it and gets lost in it. I think things move pretty fast and he gets caught up in it, and I see a lot of things happening all at once.
He seems to get pretty excited, during sex. I think sex is enriching for him, why I am getting, kind of like a sport. He also feels they can help and support another during the act. He does seem secretive and private about his sex life in public, but there seems to be this vast knowledge he does have when it comes to sex, it seems he will just know what to do.
Hmm, his is not too bad, kind of like his energy.
Hoshi (Trine/6 of Swords/The Chariot)
It seems he is all about forward progress and moving forward when it comes to sex. He sees sex being beneficial for both parties and it can be a healing process with two people coming together. For him sex is about enjoyment and things flowing together, moving past any difficulties of the past.
It is like he is moving towards something or moving towards something better. I see him wanting to make improvements and he also seems to like a challenge or brave enough to face any challenges when it comes to sex. It is like if there are struggles, he wants to work through and improve on it, to face it head on, so that things can go much smoother in the bedroom.
I kind of like his energy.
Dino (Neptune/The Magician/Temperance)
Every time I think of Neptune energy. It gives me someone who prefers to fantasize about things, rather than actually doing it, so that may be the case for him. He could idealize sex and have his fantasies of how he thinks it should be. He may get disappointed in how the reality of it plays out.
So, the Neptune card has the word magic on it. The magician is all about magic too, so that is interesting, what is that about, does he use sex as a magical tool, or sex for him can be a magical experience, interesting. Hmm, like some sort of sex magic he may partake in, that is interesting. He seems to like peace and balance when it comes to sex, moderation is key for him, so don't see him doing it too much, but he also wants a smooth experience where the two parties can blend together and be in harmony with one another. This is kind of nice.
Dokyeom (Jupiter/The Shadow/Page of Wands)
Well, he is an interesting one. I wonder if he is someone who likes to travel to different places and sleep with people in those different countries. He has a youthful energy, a curiosity to try new things and explore new cultures, so I am seeing wanting to sleep with foreigners and see how they do things.
This is definitely something he prefers to keep hidden and not reveal, of course he would, he seems like a kinky person, could like bondage and that stuff. There is a side of him sexually that he doesn't reveal openly. I mean that is a most people, but there is something more darker here, not sure what that is exactly. I mean he could be into BDSM stuff, so that could be it, but I just get this boy is freaky and willing to explore new things he hasn't tried before.
Joshua (Quincunx/Knight of Cups/The Lovers)
So, he is also someone who can be complex in bed, or things are for him in bed, but overall, his energy isn't too bad. He may be confusing for his sex partner. They may not know what to expect from him or what he wants. He seems to be quite a mystery. I see him just following his heart and instincts and just going with that. He may also need drinks to help him, or maybe he needs them to be drunk, which wild if true. Because the knight of cups gives me someone offering a drink, maybe he does this to calm their nerves.
It is like he will appear very romantic and loving, pretty much seduce them with his kindness. Not going to lie he may do this to get in bed with them, but lots of guys do this, so yeah. He seems to enjoy hot, passionate sex, and enjoys the intensity of it all. He could get clingy and attached to the person he sleeps with. He is also someone who can be one way and then another, so yeah, he can be pretty confusing for his sex partner. Like they are unsure with what he likes and doesn't. I am not sure he communicates very well at all.
Junhui (Sagittarius/Judgment/9 of Wands)
He could be someone who likes to lead and be in control but also likes to explore and have fun in bed. He seems to be about taking risk and doing daring things, like maybe having sex in places he may feel they can get caught, not sure why that came up, but going with it. I see him pretty experimental and doesn't have many limitations and boundaries when it comes to sex. He may even cross the line a bit.
He may believe this is a time he can get out of his shell or where he feels less judgment and less inhabitations. This is where he can explore and be free. This 9 of wands is interesting, where is this energy coming from? I think he can feel burdened and intense from his life, so sex is a way he can feel free and liberated. It can be hard for him to relax from his grueling schedule, so sex may be away too free him from that.
S.Coups (Quincunx/3 of Pentacles/Ace of Pentacles)
Hmm, I am not sure sex comes quite easy for Seungcheol. i think the process can be quite confusing for him at times, and I am not sure he is always capable of making his partner reach their peak. I think he may tend to overcomplicate things as well. He does seem about teamwork and would not want to put all the responsibility on himself, which maybe he tends to do, but would like input from his partner as well.
He would like it to be an enjoyable experience, and he would like things to be simple, but his experience level does not seem that high. He may struggle to know what to do, but the thought of improving things is there. He would like to build a strong sexual relationship, but there is still a lot for him to learn.
Wonwoo (Scorpio/6 of Wands/10 of Pentacles)
Hmm, wasn't expecting the energy of the first two cards. Hmm, he can be a pretty intense lover, but also mysterious and can be a bit complex. I can see manipulative energy as well. He could have a tendency to be addicted to sex or have this strong desire to have sex (that surprises me). I see him being very prideful when it comes to sex, a need to overpower someone, dominate them and win them over.
So, I do see him being a pretty passionate lover. He may also be an enigma to his lover and hard to figure out as well. It seems he would like things to appear a certain way and for things to look stable on the surface, or to others, but he seems to have a darker side when it comes to his sex life. He is like a different person. Like not sure you guys seen the video If You Seek Amy by Briney Spears, but he gives me that vibe, where they appear like a family friendly family at the end, but behind the scenes in the home, there are orgies and bdsm type stuff happening, not saying that is what exactly happens with him, but that is the vibe I get.
Oh, this is kind of wild, I wasn't expecting this one. I am not sure where to put him, because I am not getting, he is great, but not getting he is bad. He is quite an enigma, so he may go low, just for that reason.
Mingyu (Libra/5 of Cups/10 of Pentacles)
This isn't as exciting as I thought it would be lol He seems to be pretty picky in what he chooses. I say he can be diplomatic and likes harmony when it comes to sex. He may be a bit more into trying to please his partner and he may be unsure what to do and may try to follow his partner's lead. Honestly this energy is a bit stale and basic to me. He seems vanilla honestly. He doesn't give off much excitement and passion. And I could see partners and maybe himself being disappointed.
I don't really think he is a good lay, that is what I get. To him appearances are important, whatever that means. He likes to build a strong and stable foundation. It is like he wants to appear he knows what he is doing but doesn't really. He seems to like things clean, likes things fair and balanced and likes the aesthetics of things. Whatever that could mean for him. Yeah, not much going on with him when it comes to sexual energy. I will say man is fine af, but may possibly disappoint you in bed. Umm, it is what it is, not here to knock him, but not going to lie with what I get here. This is what I get lol
Minghao (Saturn/The Empress/3 of Swords)
Well, this is interesting. So, it seems he is pretty disciplined when it comes to sex. He may be the type to put limitations on his partner and does seem to have a lot of self-control when it comes to sex. He may be the type that holds off gratification for his partner. He can be pretty restricting as well. I don't see him as someone who is that horny of a person. I think he is good at containing himself when it comes to sex. He may also just restrict himself from sex altogether too.
Now does he have a pregnancy kink, who knows. I say he can be pretty creative when it comes to sex, but with this energy he could have a strong possibility of getting someone pregnant. He could possibly have cheating tendencies. He does seem to be hurt by love and scorned by it, maybe he was cheated on. I am not getting much about sexual energy here, more so about his love life, so I will leave it here.
Seungkwan (12th House/Page of Cups rv/Knight of Pentacles)
Love seeing the 12th house here, beautiful card. Sex can be transformative and a spiritual experience for him. It seems to be healing for him or can be therapeutic for him in a sense. I can see spiritual lessons needing to be learned here. I am not sure he has had the best experiences when it comes to sex, so there is a learning and healing process here for him.
The 12th House indicates a spiritual component to sex for him. But he does seem to block his emotions, intuition and spiritual connection when it comes to sex. He seems more grounded and practical about it. He seems to take his time to open up to sex. I am not sure he has it often. He can seem pretty hesitant about it and doesn't necessarily allow his emotions to take the lead, this may be what he should do, but he blocks that. The knight of pentacles gives me someone who does show effort, but he tends to not show much emotion or vulnerability when it comes to sex.
Vernon (North Node/3 of Swords/King of Pentacles)
I feel there is a lot he needs to learn or that he wants to learn when it comes to sex. I do see him pursuing it and trying to improve his skill. I feel there are lesson he needs to know on a soul level when it comes to sex as well. It is like he may be working towards something when it comes to sex, a goal he may have. It seems he has been hurt, or sex can be a frustrating experience for him, cheating could be involved, not sure if it was him or someone else.
But there can be a struggle to communicate for him as well. I see healing needs to be done when it comes to his sex life. I don't see this experience as enjoyable for him. He does seem to put a lot of effort into sex and tries his best to be the best he can be. He can be a bit too practical and stubborn about things. I see him as someone with lots of experience in this area but still seems to have difficulty with it. I say a lack of showing his emotions, being vulnerable and opening up could be the problem. Also, he could also be a bit boring. King of Pentacles can give me that indication. He may lack excitement and passion in the bedroom.
Okay, this was fun, excited for the other groups in store and the requested ones I have on my list.
