what’s fascinating to see is the juxtaposition of cassian as a recruiter (as an axis or a fulcrum) and luthen as a recruiter.

the show has been playing on chirrut’s words in rogue one: there’s more than one kind of prison.

so you’ve got luthen who every episode gives me more and more former jedi vibes - and say he is actually a former jedi in hiding, say it’s not just a similarity. he has made his mind a ‘sunless space’ and thinks of himself as damned because he is using his enemy’s (the sith’s) tools against them - anger, ego, unwillingness to yield, eagerness to fight. “they’ve set me down a path from which there is no escape.” i mean im not ready to pound the gavel yet but he’s definitely a jedi in hiding who has felt a need to use the very tools that he doesn’t believe in. that are antithetical to his very belief system. even if he’s not a jedi, he’s trapped in a world that he loathes, selling the pieces of cultures that have been marginalized and oppressed to fund a rebellion, a rebellion he believes in but cannot serve without selling his soul. that is a horrifying thing.

you’ve got mon mothma who lives in luxury and affluence but has locked her truth away to protect herself and to protect the rebellion - and is in a traditional marriage that began when she was a teenager, a child. for all of her privilege and she does have that in spades, that is something the show is saying - that mon is in a prison of sorts too. vel as well - though she has her freedom when she is with the rebels and with cinta.

you’ve got jung who has been undercover in the isb for six years, who now has to live with the guilt of kreegyr’s rebels likely being massacred so that the isb doesn’t find out there’s a spy in their midst. man luthen that was cold.

but those are metaphorical prisons. and that’s important to remember because ultimately while they are at risk, they’re also not in literal prison. they’re not enslaved like cassian and the others on narkina-5, or tortured like bix.

and a metaphorical prison IS easier to survive, no matter what mon says. the irony is that while cassian has been in many ways lying to the audience and to everyone else in the show until narkina, he’s always known what he’s against. to borrow saw’s words, cassian has clarity of purpose from the moment he is imprisoned. we don’t see him worn down although he surely is exhausted, we don’t see him disillusioned like melshi or in denial like kino loy (who andy serkis says was put in prison for organizing his workplace. fun fact).

he is at serious risk of torture and death but cassian is more alive and more himself than he’s seemed in the show until this arc. he’s organizing, he’s being a leader, he’s recruiting - and he seems like he’s free in some ways. because he knows the enemy intimately like luthen, but in different ways. the fact that he knows the empire thinks they’re not even worth listening to because he’s lived that his whole life, that liberates him to openly rebel in a way that seems counterintuitive. but he’s right. and it works.

but unfortunately recruits don’t always live. shit goes wrong or someone doesn’t get the help they need when they’re at their weakest - kino loy - sometimes someone has to die - like tivik, like kreegyr’s rebels - to get a message to people who can do something with it. like cassian and jyn and the rest of rogue one.

that’s where cassian is when we meet him in rogue one. back in prison, but more of a metaphorical prison (i mean saw’s cell aside lol) as chirrut notes. a mental prison, like luthen’s. like lonni jung’s.

kino loy says that “if we can fight half as hard as we’ve been working, we will be home in no time.”

rogue one is when he can finally liberate himself again and go home.

Shuu — If you're capable of carrying him, he doesn't exactly mind. Not having to walk when he already feels like shit isn't that bad, even if it is weird to be treated like this. Unless someone is going to see him, though, Shuu lets it happen. It's too much trouble to protest.

Reiji — Rationally, he knows that this is necessary. However, being carried like this is deeply humiliating, and Reiji isn't taking that well. He's trying to hide how bothered he is by it... but that's not going well. He looks terribly uncomfortable, even though he's letting it happen.

Ayato — He's one who struggles and protests terribly, demanding to be put down because you're not allowed to do this. The reality is that Ayato is terribly flustered, vaguely angry, and not at all ready to process being held this way. He's not taking it well at all.

Kanato — For about ten seconds, it seems like he's going to spiral into a tantrum... but suddenly, he relaxes into your hold. Though Kanato won't admit it to you, it's comforting to be carried like this, especially when he's already hurting and feeling miserable.

Laito — He tries to make the situation sexual for a bit, but as the reality of being held so intimately registers, the flirtatious comments start to die out. Laito still acts mostly unaffected, but internally, the act of care is getting to him. It's way too sweet for his liking.

Subaru — Panic. Flustered, tsundere panic. Subaru is the one who struggles to the point that you almost drop him. He'd rather walk on his own, injured as he is, than deal with this embarrassment. When you refuse to allow that, he's stuck just trying not to look at you.

Kino — He takes the chance to tease you in any way he can, and happily boasts about how you're spoiling him. Now that you've held him like this once, Kino is likely going to demand a repeat of it whenever he wants your attention. He likes the intimacy a lot.

This question comes from a tag I left on this beautiful gif set from @staticwaffles, where I referenced how I overthink the moment when Melshi rubs the back of his head - after Cassian gets called out for resting by Kino and Melshi prompts him to take the drill and get back to work.

Per generous request, I now present you with a non-exhaustive list of ways I have interpreted this gesture:

Pain/exhaustion: we Melshi lovers have long made much of the signs that Melshi is dealing with chronic Narkina-5 effects in his left hand in particular (see gif sets where he climbs or holds on with his right hand only); and throughout this particular assembly sequence in 1.08, there are also a number of other moments where Melshi appears to be quietly wincing or breathing heavily (see low-quality screen shot below). Perhaps part of the point of Cassian getting called out for a moment of rest and Melshi handing him a way to look busy is that Melshi knows Cassian hasn't yet learned how to hide the signs that he's feeling the toll of the work.

Worry/protectiveness: speaking of catching Kino's attention, we know Melshi has intimate knowledge of what can happen if you get on Kino's shit list. I like the idea that maybe Melshi can sense Cassian's starting to push Kino's buttons, and while Melshi has already given Kino his own kind of implicit permission to work off steam by throwing Melshi around, he's not keen on watching Cassian get pushed into walls (and maybe he can already sense the arrangement wouldn't work in the same way for the two of them: it's very dangerous to corner Cassian).

Confirmation: I personally enjoy the version of events where some part of Melshi figures out "Keef" is a pseudonym, and since it takes Cassian a few beats to respond to Melshi using "Keef" to try to get his attention in this scene, I think it's possible to read this moment as the first time Melshi's guessing it's not his real name (and thinking about everything else that might imply).

Grim habit: I also can't avoid noticing that the head-rubbing gesture resembles one half of the on-program position, and I'm both heartbroken and compelled by the possibility that this shows us a Melshi who has half-internalized the command to assume a posture of compliance automatically in times of stress or under scrutiny from authorities: maybe it's even started to feel perversely soothing. It's significant, then, that Melshi's gesture is only half the position: an early sign that despite the cynicism and pessimism of the intellect he's cultivated to protect his mind from believing in a way out, part of him remains hopefully/hopelessly open to the appeal of Cassian's defiance.

I really do love how large of a role family plays in the story and the characters’ motivations and personalities. I still feel like we’re in the “early” part of the series, but to be already picking up on so many of these themes and motifs is really cool, and I’m definitely keen to see how they all come to a head in the series.

Final thoughts: This was definitely a lot more interesting than the last volume, and the pace seems to be picking up. I’m still kinda waiting for it to get out of “villain of the week” type plot, but at least we’re getting more depth out of it. Also, it seems like we’ve completely abandoned those twelve coin assassins at this point? There are some things I’m still unsure about, like Y, but I also know that I struggle to pick up on more indirect things in my second language, especially when it’s referencing something that we’re just supposed to figure out. So that’s my assumption on Y, but I still don’t have any ideas on why Wolfwood has such strong ties with it. Also, I feel like my thoughts were pretty short for this volume, but that’s also definitely because there was lots of action and fight scenes this time around, and my brain just kinda shuts off for those lolol

I am watching the English dub lately trying to relive the characters’ agony and mine. It feels like watching it anew with fresh eyes. The experience is sometimes exhilarating.

It is the way Kazuki’s English language VA that makes the EN version sounds so intimate and playful, particularly on episodes 8 and 11.

On episode 8, Shigeki’s voice is convincing as a mafia boss. The long silence in between the father and son’s conversation signifies Shigeki’s prejudice over his son’s affairs. (The repeated use of silence as a narrative tool is evident on this episode tbh.) It is so ominous. Disturbing. (Yeah, we know what happened after this.) Rei’s English VA is not as sexy as Kouki Uchiyama’s version but sometimes it is fine. Though the way he says the line, “That’s not it…. Uh… Kazuki doesn’t have anything to do with this…” is not as fearful as the original version. It falls short. It lacks the grit. Of the rawness of Rei’s feelings to Kazuki. Whereas Kazuki’s EN version almost reaches Tosshi’s supremacy as the forlorn “significant other.” The phone call between K and Rei with Miri’s whining voice in the background is still one of the best scenes. It encapsulates the domestic life of a couple, and a child wanting to talk to the other parent. Rei’s repeated apologies and K’s disappointment. “So did you talk things over with your dad? Are you there? Can you hear me?!” Miri’s EN VA is not as comparably good as Hina Kino. Enough said.

Shigeki’s long silence, judging looks

I am amazed with the translation, of the way K greets his friend after their impending separation by the start of the new year, well, friend ( my mind is dirty all right?). K’s trying not to sound as if he doesn’t care but is probably hoping that Rei would have a change of heart concerning living their lives without each other. “Hey stranger… so what’s going on? Uhm… about dinner….” (My head canon is that it would be their last proper dinner together before they embarked into the new chapters of their lives.) (An AU-canon divergence of this kind must be written!) Anyway, I don’t expect anything less with Rei’s frantic voice to save Miri.

In a shocking turn of events, I'm posting my recs EARLY this month instead of procrastinating! May the Fourth be with you!

About half the stories in this set are Star Wars, because I finally watched Andor and it was AMAZING; the other half are DCU, because I am predictable when sick (Tim + Batfamily h/c my beloved). Plus a Leverage/Old Guard crossover!

STAR WARS

To Climb by Nock_and_Bolt

“Climb,” Kino urged others to escape a prison he never would.

“Climb!” Nemik screamed past multicolored explosions and his own crushed spine.

“Climb!” K-2SO’s voice juddered out over the intercom, punched from mechanical lungs by blaster fire.

And what else could Cassian do but be borne up by the bodies of those that had gone before him?

Brutally good, full of the parallels and motifs in from Andor, all woven into Cassian's final climb in the tower at Scarif. It WILL make you cry in the best way.

Coping Mechanisms by mosylu (Cassian/Jyn)

It takes a heat wave for Jyn to notice that Cassian never, ever goes barefoot.

Intimate and sweet if-they-had-lived look at Cassian's trauma from the Narkina 5 prison.

Kino Lives by ad_asterism

Set at the end of Andor Episode 10: "One Way Out". Kino fucking gets to live.

Look, a girl has needs, and those needs include reading every single Kino fix-it for Episode 10 on AO3. This was my favorite by far, I think maybe because it *doesn't* involve Cassian? The episode ending was the right ending for that arc in Cassian's story, but this fic picks up the thematic threads and weaves them into off a very Star Wars escape for Kino. It could use some more love - possibly the very basic title and summary kept people away - so don't forget to comment!

No Survivors by elwenyere (Cassian/Melshi)

It had been three standard years, two months, and twenty-five days since Melshi had made himself walk away from the man he’d known as Keef Girgo.

Great mid-mission reunion for Cassian and Melshi, their slowly growing attachment and exploration of Cassian's trauma are beautifully written, and the plot starts to poke at the roots of Rogue One.

Spies travel light. Even so, Cassian Andor left things behind.

A neatly drawn outsider-POV character study, as the Rebels clear out the belongings of the Death Star's dead. This fic's older, but felt very matched in tone with Andor.

A Proud, Unpleasant Sort of Man by angel_deux (Han/Leia, Cassian/Jyn)

It takes Cassian Andor and Han Solo an embarrassingly long time to realize that they aren't each other's rivals.

Funny and sweet post-Rogue One everybody-lives AU.

DCU

Inscribed on Body & Soul by drowningfire

Jason Todd died knowing he was loved. His resurrection took even that from him. Turns out he came back to life needing saving just as much as he did when he left it. Thankfully the Bats and Birds have always specialised in impossible rescues. And while love can't fix everything having proof of it can't hurt.

AKA In a world where the names of those who love you inscribe themselves upon your skin, Jason's resurrection plays out a little differently.

Lovely platonic soulmates AU with lots of feelings and angst for everyone in the family, just the way I like it.

The Red Hood stares at him like Tim just slapped him with a fish.

With his grades slipping, Tim worries Bruce will take Robin away. So when the Red Hood breaks into his room with the intent to kill him, Tim decides it's a good idea to ask him for help on his English homework. It works. And then it doesn't. And then Tim solves a mystery and almost dies anyway.

The summary makes this sound kinda cracky but I actually loved the plot. (Tim, how is your life just SO disaster? It's really a talent.)

Little Red and the Big Bad Hood by CrzyFun

Olivia Draper had been a good idea at first. She could pass for older than Tim could pull off while masculine and women really could get into places easier if they had a pretty face. With makeup and some stylish-yet-inexpensive clothes, Olivia could pull off most undercover ops. She was Tim’s Matches Malone.

Then Hood had shown up on the scene.

Charming AU with tons of identity porn as Jason grudgingly big-brother-adopts genderfluid Tim while he's undercover.

For the Sick and Dying by GoAwayOlivia

It’s been a while since Jason has felt this bad. He’s used to being bruised and aching, used to broken bones and lacerations of all sizes and depths, but it’s been a hell of a long time since he’s been sick, and he’d honestly forgotten how much it sucks. His family isn't exactly helping matters.

In which Jason is hilariously dramatic about being sick. I enjoyed the hell out of this while actually sick, but I think the appeal is universal.

The last (but certainly not least) story I have for you is a delightful Leverage/The Old Guard crossover, which was the funniest thing I read all month.

The Fountain of Youth Job by BazinMousqueton

The Leverage: Redemption team are hired to investigate Merrick Pharmaceuticals following a suspicious death in South Sudan. They embark on a con, infiltrate Merrick’s HQ… and find some unexpected prisoners in his research lab.

This one is more accessible for Leverage-only fans than TOG-only fans, I think, but it has a pitch-perfect grasp on the Leverage crew (Redemption era) and a great con setup - which gets partially and hilariously derailed when they find Joe and Nicky.

Reiji: Oh dear. ...What brings you out here?

Yui: ( A Familiar...Seems like it’s here to deliver a letter. )

Reiji: ...This seal. I wonder who it could be from? 

*Flip*

Reiji: The sender’s name is...Kino? That does not ring a bell...

Yui: ( He looks stern...I wonder if there’s something bad written in there? )

Yui: ( However, it seems like something very important so...I probably shouldn’t bother him. )

( ...We finally had a chance to talk as well, but it’s kind of lonely when he’s only looking down at the letter. )

Written inside the letter,

addressed to Reiji-san, the King of Vampires,

proposing a certain trade. 

The names of the five other Sakamaki brothers,

were mentioned as hostages. 

While the name written down,

in case he were to accept their offer,

is one I could have never imagined. 

Yui: ( They’re asking for me in exchange for everyone’s safety. And the one demanding this... )

Reiji: ーー I believe the name ‘Komori Seiji’ must be familiar to you, no? 

Yui: Why would Father...!? 

Reiji: It appears that he has been fervently looking for you. 

Yui: No way...

( I honestly wouldn’t have been surprised if he had long forgotten about me. Yet...He actually remembered. )

( I wonder if he’s worried about me? ...Thinking about that makes my heart ache. I should be happy but...It’s a bit of a complicated feeling. )

( Father has always hated Vampires. Yet his own daughter is acting together with one now. )

( In fact, we even bear mutual feelings for each other...and are in a very intimate relationship. )

( While he might have caught on to it already, I wonder what his reaction will be when he is confronted with said reality? )

( He’ll most likely...No, I’m sure I’ll never get his blessings. )

Reiji: ...Are you anxious? 

Yui: ...

( Of course I am, but I shouldn’t let that show in front of him. )

( It was my own conscious decision to come with him to Eden after all. )

Yui: Anyway, the sender of this letter...Who is this ‘Kino’?

Reiji: I have no idea. However, seeing as he is capable of making a deal with the Association of Churches, we can assume that he must be rather troublesome. 

Yui: ...What will you do? 

Reiji: ...

Yui: ( He’s hesitating...I guess that only makes sense with everyone’s lives being on the line. )

( However, I’m sure he’s thinking of my wellbeing as well... )

...Reiji-san, please save the others. 

Reiji: ...Excuse me? 

Yui: Since their lives are being threatened, if I don’t go, they’ll be...In that case...!

Reiji: ...Enough with the jokes. 

Why should I agree with their proposal to save those selfish, self-centered buffoons? 

I am sure that even someone like you can imagine what will happen if I swallow their conditions?

Yui: ( ...The condition is to hand me over to the Church. )

( If that happens, we might never see each other again. )

( That’d be very painful but... )

But, everyone...

Reiji: ...I cannot bear watching that disgusting attitude of yours any longer. 

Yui: Eh...?

Reiji: In other words, I am trying to say that this hypocrisy of yours makes me terribly upset. 

In reality, you simply wish to be reunited with your father, correct?

Yet you are trying to make it sound as if you made your decision for my sake...It makes me gag.

Yui: No...You’re wrong.

Reiji: You can easily say whatever you want.

Yui: ...Could it be...You’ve felt this way the whole time? 

Reiji: ...

...Why of course. In the end, you are still human. You are fundamentally different from us in each and every aspect. 

Even if it feels like we might agree on things on a surface-level...There was never any true mutual understanding.

Yui: No way...

( Then, how about all those moments we’ve spent together up till now...? )

( I can’t believe I was the only one who thought we were on the same page... )

ー Yui runs away

Reiji: ...

( ...This was for the best. I had no other choice. )

( If I empty my heart and lock away my feelings...all feelings I bear for her. )

( As one can tell, it ceases the decay of Eden. ...Just as I thought, this was the answer to everything. )

( To keep her safe as well ーー Perhaps we should no longer be together... )

Monologue

Even as I mindlessly keep on running ahead,

the pain inside my chest only gets increasingly worse. 

Everything turns black in front of my eyes, 

as all fears and worries which had built up this whole time,

were released (崩された) at once. 

As I realize that I will have to cope with this horrible, emotional pain all by myself, I shiver.

I do not know what decision Reiji-san will choose to make.

My heart continues to be shaken up,

by the incoming waves of anxiety (不安の波).

I doubt I will be able to stop these tears,

any time soon.

also there is like an intimacy to Andor

like I think it is what made me so invested in the show, but it really is throughout. Not just in the writing, but in the acting and the way it was just overall directed and shot. Quiet moments when you don't expect it, moments where you get to sit with the characters' feelings for a bit, or when the characters are completely in focus, for example monologuing or in intense conversation, and the character feels completely bare to us as viewers

there's this one bit where we've last seen the prisoners calling for a medic for Ulaf, and next time we get back to them it's just Cassian and Kino sitting on the floor waiting by his side. Idk why that shot stuck with me but it really did. We got to see the hallway almost empty for the first time ever, and a more vulnerable side from Kino, and just it being representative of everyone caring and rooting for Ulaf. It also felt almost like... ordinary? In a weird sense. Reminded me of when something mightve happened to a friend in school and you got to sit with them outside in the hallway, kind of out of the usual routine. It's just so interesting that in such a simple scene, I could feel exactly like I was there with them. Like no barrier between me in the audience and the group waiting for a medic to show. I think the prison arc in general is especially great at letting the audience feel like they're there with them and feeling the same anxieties and emotions.

I keep coming back to the word 'intimate' when trying to describe what gets me about Andor

This is assuming that the owner is at least fairly kind~ :3

Shuu

Unfortunately, he's not doing the best job. Shuu is somewhere between vaguely frustrated that he has to do something so labor-intensive and uncomfortable with such an intimate task. He wasn't trained for this kind of thing— it's a task meant for a companion type, and he's totally out of his depth. Beyond that, it's also slightly stressful to be taking care of you like this. He tries to get it over with quickly, so he has less of a chance to mess up.

Reiji

This is the kind of task that he'd barely have been able to hope for. You're putting a lot of faith in him to take care of you, and Reiji is silently extremely proud that he was deemed worthy of it. He does an excellent job of it, too. There's no way he'd allow anything less. If anything, he's a bit too particular about making sure he does a perfect job of helping you. If you praise him for it afterward, he'll be dwelling on that momentary approval for days to come.

Ayato

How is he supposed to know how to do this? Ayato is panicking a bit because he has no idea how to perform this task properly, and that means he's bound to do it wrong somehow. However, if you're patient enough to guide him through what needs to be done, he doesn't do too bad of a job of it. Beyond that... it's kind of weird that you're letting him do this, in the sense that the sheer amount of trust leaves him somewhere between confused and flustered.

Kanato

Although he's another one who has absolutely no idea what to do, surprisingly enough, Kanato is deeply invested in doing this right. Taking care of you like this gives him a sense of usefulness that he hasn't experienced before, and... while you're injured and relying on him, you're like a fragile doll that's completely in his care. It's an odd sense of power, in a way, and it also significantly strengthens his attachment to you because he can think that you need him.

Laito

At first, he assumes that "bathing you" is intended to be something sexual. It's difficult to comprehend anything else, even when you make it very clear that you don't want anything of the sort. Still, Laito does well with it. He's plenty used to close contact with his owner's body, so the only strange part about it is that you're not escalating the interaction any further. The tenderness of it all makes him a bit uncomfortable, but he doesn't hate it.

Subaru

He has absolutely no idea how to do this, and he's terrified that he's going to end up hurting you. Subaru is visibly, intensely nervous about what you're expecting him to do— it almost feels like some kind of trap meant to make him fuck up. Still, he does his best, even if it's way too awkward to be doing something so intimate. In the end, he's shocked when you outright praise him for helping, and even more flustered by that response.

Kino

He's not exactly eager to help you like this (partially out of the fear he'll mess up, partially because he's vaguely uncomfortable with the idea), but you'd definitely be mad if he refused. Kino does a poor job of helping you at first... but the more he realizes how much closeness this means, the more he starts to enjoy it. It feels like you're really relying on him, and that kind of attention is all but addictive. Then, he's just trying to earn more praise.

Samstag

Wir starten zusammen mit meinen Eltern, Björn und Anni mit einer kulinarischen Führung durch meine Heimat Berlin Friedrichshain.

Es gibt hervorragende Halloumi und Falafel im Marmarita by Fatoush, Proskauer Straße, dann vorbei am Intimes Kino (eine Inspiration, die wir ganz am Ende der Tour noch einaml aufnehmen) durch den Simon-Dach-Kiez. Im Été-Asian-Fusion wird überbackener Blumenkohl mit Dipp gereicht dazu ein paar lecker Drinks bevor es weiter geht mit Geschichten aus dem Arbeiterbezirk und dem RAW-Gelände. Das Kaffee Wahrhaft Nahrhaft überzeugt vor Allem durch bezaubernden Charme, das österreichische Lokal Mutzenbacher dagegen eher mit viel Butter am Spinatknödel und das Trattoria Libau zuletzt mit seinem holzbetriebenen Pizzaofen. Die 3 Stunden vergehen wie im Flug.

Zweiten Anlaufpunkt des Tages ist das Humboldtforum im neuen Stadschloss Berlin.

Hier folgen wir der Empfehlung eines IAV-Kollegen, den wir zufällig hier treffen und bewundern die ausufernd große Dauerausstellung ethnologischer Objekte aus aller Welt, die komplett kostenlos ist. Es gäbe hier noch weit mehr zu sehen, als wir in 2 Stunden aufnehmen können, aber da es dem Abend zu geht und wir noch auf Karten hoffen für die ausverkaufte Komedievorstellung "Luschtobjekt" mit Bülent Celyan, machen wir uns auf den Weg in die Friedrichstraße zum Admiralspalast.

Tatsächlich bekommen wir noch 2 gute Plätze und werden fast 3 Stunden blendend unterhalten, von einem witzigen, privaten und sehr rockigen Bülent.

Zum Abschluss des Abends kehren wir nebenan bei Meliá Tapas ein und genießen noch ein paar spanische Häppchen. Mit der Straßenbahn geht es über den Hackeschen Markt direkt durch bis zu unserem Schlafplatz in der Schönhauser Alle bei Judith Vater.
