Oxford Literary Festival
Tumblr media
Tasha Suri, L.R. Lam and C.L. Clark are all really fabulous writers, and I feel very fancy being at the Oxford Literary Festival on such a great panel. I’m really excited to see what they say. (I will say things too.)

✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨
Emberclaw by LR Lam
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
QOTD: What’s the last sequel you read?
[instagram]
Thank you DAW and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was so happy to be back with these characters and so anxious for what they faced.
I loved the whole magic academy plot this book had going for it. I didn’t actually think Arcady would get there and the fact that they did made me so genuinely happy even though they had so much crap to deal with.
I loved the relationship formed between Arcady and Sorin. I would absolutely love a short story of them just hanging out having some kind of carefree holiday together, like what their trip to Willem’s estate could have been under better circumstances.
I LOVED Willem, Rahela and Damon and the group they formed with Arcady. Honestly fictional friendships make my heart sing and this group was no exception.
The romance between Everen and Arcady is EVERYTHING. I love them so much!
The climax and resolution felt really well paced and I really enjoyed how everything turned out. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire last 100 pages.
I really loved this duology and I can’t recommend it enough.

SPOILERS FOR “DRAGONFALL”!
Long-banished dragons, revered as gods, return to the mortal realm in the second book in this magical, romantic, epic fantasy series from a Sunday Times bestselling author.
An ancient danger. A broken bond. The fate of two worlds hangs in the balance.
Arcady and Everen have been separated, parted by the Veil.
Alone in Vatra, Arcady embarks on their greatest con yet: posing as a noble student at the University, determined to prove their grandsire's innocence once and for all.
Imprisoned in Vere Celene, Everen is hated by his kind. When he is released to defend his people, visions of the past and the future haunt him. If he steers the wrong path, he may never create a future where humans and dragons can live in harmony.
Time is running out. Threats rise from Arcady's old life and their new. And between the worlds, an ancient danger is awakening. Together Arcady and Everen can face it - but only if they can find their way back together, and restore the trust that has been broken.

I love that we went a different direction from the US for SEVEN DEVILS, but still managed to hit the same oil-spill colour palette. Gorgeous books, and generated probably one of my favourite reviews of all time:
"A space opera with occasional lesbian snogging" - SFX
delighted to report that the sequel, SEVEN MERCIES, also is a space opera with furious women and lesbian snogging. Perfect entries in Gollancz's 'Lesbians in Space' collection.

@lauraroselam is over here on Tumblr too, be sure to give them a follow because their collection of queer, feminist SFF is phenomenal.

Any good queer high fantasy suggestions? I love queer fantasy!! (Also appreciate spiciness, but it is not required)
oh hell yeah, here are a few in our collection! (🌶️ may vary)
the Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland
Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne (definitely more cozy than spicy)
Dragonfall by L.R. Lam
House of Crimson Hearts by Ruby Roe (steamy vampire fantasy)
The Fate of Stars by S.D. Simper (described as ‘dark & sexy’ with mermaids)
Reforged by Seth Haddon @sethhaddonsblog
happy reading! 🌈 📚

@provokedgoalie Hi! I have so many dragon recs, but I’ll start with eight right now! They’re not in any sort of order, but here they are:
1. Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede (YA series)
Cimorene, a young princess, does not want to be a princess OR get married to a prince. So she runs away and starts to live with a group of dragons, but soon finds out that there’s tension between them and the wizards.
2. Dragonfall by L.R. Lam (adult series)
I just started reading this one and I really like the dynamic of dragons bonding with humans, the magic system, and characters. Dragons are revered as gods, but things change when dragons come back to the mortal world.
3. Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton (adult stand alone)
The patriarch in a family of dragons passes away and drama ensues as inheritances get split, a sister joins the suffragette movement, someone sues, and one brother has to sit with a tricky last minute confession.
4. Black Dragon Codex by R.D. Henham (YA series)
A young thief and a young dragon have to team up to save his draconic mother and find a hidden treasure, and start a prison-break. This book is technically #3 in a series, but you can read the series out of order. There are a couple reoccurring characters.
5. I’m Afraid You’ve Got Dragons by Peter S. Beagle (adult standalone)
A new book by one of the masters of fantasy, a dragon-exterminator finds himself between a barrage of killer dragons, an evil wizard, and a misguided prince and princess.
6. So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole (teen series)
A Jamaican-inspired fantasy follows a gods-blessed heroine who’s forced to choose between saving her sister or protecting her homeland, with dragons and mechanical drakes.
7. The Last Dragon by Jane Yolen and Rebecca Guay (graphic novel standalone)
This is a story about a small village under siege by the last dragon in existence and their need to find a “hero” to save them.
8. The Dragon Quintet edited by Marvin Gaye (short story collection)
This is a collection of five killer short stories that all have to do with dragons. Every one of them was good, especially the one by Tanith Lee.
(Honorable mention: The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin- a little girl befriends an ice dragon in a time of war)
Happy reading!
