Lou Lou (aka my Lou Shayla💔)
Lou Lou was truly one of my favorite characters from “Sunrise on the Reaping”. I also see her as a nod to the Black girls/women and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW)— ppl who usually go missing and no one, especially the government, usually notices.

for half a moment I misread & thought you meant the memory book & spiraled down a rabbit hole about what if their daughter’s name was Maysilee or Madge or Louella or Lou Lou or Wellie or Lenore Dove or Lucy Gray and their son’s name was Ampert or Wyatt or Sid or Burdock or Blair & can you tell what book I have been reading lately 🥲

Lou-Lou's cries of 'you'll kill us' disturb the interview not only because they're a show of distress in what is meant to be a talk show, but because they put the responsibility for Hunger Games deaths directly onto the Capitol and its citizens, not the other tributes. It's never "we'll kill each other", it's always "you'll kill us". A statement of responsibility which Captiol citizens do not want to accept.

still thinking about what someone said on tiktok. each tribute from 12 that was in the 50th games represents something that helped snow's downfall:
wyatt: coin
haymitch: fire
maysilee: mockingjay
louella/lou lou: braids

Haymitch finding it impossible to ditch Lou Lou despite knowing that he should. She latches onto him and he just becomes her protector until the end where she dies in his arms.
Katniss finding it impossible to ditch Rue despite knowing that she should. She also latches onto Katniss who becomes her protector until the end where she dies in her arms.
They both see their little sisters in the young girls by their side. They both know that their deaths are inevitable. They both die with injuries to their chests. Both Katniss and Haymitch delay the hovercraft from taking them.
Both girls are from district 11.

*in ceasar flickerman voice* “That concludes our tributes list for the 50th anniversary Hunger Games and the second Quarter Quell! Tune in next week to determine which of the (50) 48 will be this years victor!”
(these legit took me a week so if we could show them some love that’d be nice)

The doubling of tribute numbers. The miscarried Abernathy twins. The Donner sisters who Haymitch carries a fascination for as consequence. Louella being replaced by Lou Lou, a name that only mimics the first half of her name, and a girl who matches her in appearance only. Tam Amber’s set of pins, one dropped down a well, the other discarded. The two versions of the games: the one that Haymitch remembers and the edited, falsified version of them without the real content. The two bags of gumdrops. The fraternal affection he feels for Louella and Lou Lou, the artificial twins, and Maysilee’s offer to be his sister—the second one she gives in the book. A bond with a real twin, both pairs healing the sisters he never did know. The split between what is natural and what is manufactured or forged, bonds that that grow on their own, or are forced into existance. And if the distinction makes any difference to the person it impacts.

Thinking about how Wyatt Callow is proof that Dr. Gaul’s and Snow’s assertion that humanity’s essential nature is violent (which is part of their argument for the Capitol’s control being necessary) is false. That “What happened in the arena? That’s humanity undressed… A boy with a club who beats another boy to death. That’s mankind in its natural state.” is false.
I’m sure he had it all calculated. He knew exactly what choices would give him the best odds of survival. He knew that the faster he got out of the initial bloodshed the better his chances would be. He knew that letting other kids die would benefit his odds of survival. He knew exactly what he should’ve done to preserve himself.
And yet, he threw all those statistics and odds, all that reason and logic out the window in the name of protecting Lou Lou, a girl that wasn’t even from his district. He threw it all out the window in the name of helping another human being that was in an unfair situation and had worse odds than him. He knew who the real enemy was; he knew it wasn’t the other kids being taken advantage of by the Capitol just like him.
That is humanity.

I really wanted to draw Lou Lou and Maysilee's interview dresses. Effie specifies that the dresses are from the war era, and in the ABOSAS movie, the fashion is very 30s/40s inspired, so I went for similar silhouettes for the dresses.

rereading the entire hunger games trilogy and just reached the part where Peeta and Katniss watch Haymitch's games and idk if this has already been talked about but the exact lines are
"We watch from the point of view of one of the tributes as she rises up through the tube from the launch room to the arena."
first person pov. of a female tribute. someone capitol had put a camera on. as in, someone who has been bugged by the capitol.
AS IN, FUCKING LOU LOU!

can’t believe Suzanne Collins had Wyatt Callow, who knew the odds of all the tributes’ deaths better than his own name, die protecting Lou Lou, who he statistically knew wouldn’t make it anyway. had Louella McCoy, who was immediately ready to try and stick it to the capital any way she could in the games, die before she even reached the arena. had Maysilee Donner, who constantly talked back, who wanted to die with her head up, who didn’t want to be treated like an animal by the capital, die mangled on the ground after having her vocal chords ripped out by a capital-manufactured bird. had Haymitch Abernathy, who from the moment he learned of Beetee’s plan, knew he was ready and willing to give up his life so that his friends and family could live, be forced to live without them, knowing all he did in the arena was for nothing. that everyone died anyway. sick and twisted.
