Innocent Abominations

Optimus can feel it, he can feel the twisted nature of the Terrans. Logically he knows they are good, they are kind and wonderful sparklings who need only love and guidance to grow. But Primus... the Matrix screams that they. Must. Die.

━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙ ━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙

They were a dying race, that much was clear. The youngest amongst them was Bumblebee, and he had not even lived to see the height of Cybertron's glory. He was forged during the war and only knew its wrath. Such was their reality, where their youngest had been in existence for millennia. Without the Allspark, their people were doomed to extinction, a slow and agonizing end to a species that once dominated their corner of the galaxy and forged wonders greater than any others of their time.

As such, the enframing of newsparks should have been cause for increadible celebration... and yet, as Optimus looked upon the two sparklings that were bound to the human spawn born of Dorothy, he found himself conflicted. His spark sang with joy at the revelation of new life, regardless of its Earthly origin. The Terrans were forged on Earth, but all their scans showed they were most certainly Cybertronian down to the core of their CNA. The bonds they held with the humans were unusual, along with their ability to live without energon to fuel them, however aside from those oddities, they were normal. Twitch and Thrash were wonderfully innocent, both so very kind and untainted by the curse of war.

The parts of Optimus that remained Orion demanded he spend time with the new little lives that frolicked around him. However as he looked upon them, another part of his being, the places where the Matrix dug into his spark... they revolted in disgust. The Terrans were to the part of him that was changed to be a Prime, a disgrace, a taint, a threat. The Matrix prodded, it made its demands, and while it seemed hesitant, it grew adamant as it urged him onward, pushing him to draw his axe and end the sparklings before they could grow and become and anathema worthy of note. His nature from his time as Orion screamed in outrage at that idea, and thus, Optimus found himself forever at war with himself.

Twitch was such an excitable sparkling, so eager to learn and willing to mature. She would become a fantastic leader and a wise teacher given time. Thrash was similarly enthusiastic, but he was calmer, more inclined toward the calmer things in life, at least that is what Optimus predicted should the sparkling be given time. They were young, and while they learned much from humanity, they needed to recall their origins, to know their progenitor race. That was what the parts of Orion preached. At the same time, the Matrix grew increasingly upset the more he spoke with the Terrans, its anger and primal disgust growing more with every interaction. He needed to keep them safe, but he could not be near them, not while he was so volatile.

Thus, he gave the sparklings Bumblebee to be their teacher, and for their own safety, Optimus left. He threw himself into his work, unwilling to interact with the little Terrans for fear of the Matrix's anger growing hotter. He could sense them, every moment of every cycle... their presence on Earth forever lingering at the back of his processors for reasons he could not decipher. Why did the Matrix despise them? He did not know, the relic within him offered no answers. Still he tried to be there for the Terrans as much as he could by hiding them from G.H.O.S.T and periodically prodding Megatron until he would go visit them.

His careful time away ensured that the odd times he interacted with Thrash and Twitch, he remained composed. Combat protocols still ran beneath his plating, screaming and demanding activation, but it was manageable. He could still smile and offer the two Terrans words of wisdom and small amounts of affection. But touch? His whole being blanched when the Terrans came too near. He tried to keep Megatron and Bumblebee between him and the Terrans whenever possible. He couldn't be trusted around them, not when he was so very torn. Megatron found his behavior odd and questioned him a time or two, but usually Optimus's excuses worked and he was able to slip away without too much suspicion.

He could handle it. Just so long as the Terrans stayed a safe distance away, he could pretend, he could maintain a smile and not be drowned in the all encompassing desire to see them obliterated. Never more did he wish Ratchet were with him, or even a medic like First Aid or Ambulon. Someone, anyone, he just needed an explanation, or some sort of reason as to why he felt the way he did. The Matrix offered no answers despite the fact that his desire to raise young directly conflicted with its disgust toward the new sparklings. He knew no one would understand, he knew none would have an answer, and so he continued keeping to himself, doing everything in his power to destroy the pinpricks of primal hatred that constantly rattled his being.

Bumblebee: The Terrans are progressing well in their training. They have trouble focusing, and I admit that it is very irritating, but for their age, they are performing well.

Optimus: That is good to hear.

Bumblebee: I haven't seen you in a while Optimus, and I am sure the Terrans would love to hear from you again. They haven't seen you since the incident with Soundwave.

Optimus: No. I cannot do that. I cannot be near them.

Bumblebee: What? Optimus is something wrong?

Optimus: No, nothing that should concern you... just keep working with the Terrans. I will do my best to convince Megatron to visit in my stead. He is better acquainted with the Terrans anyway.

Bumblebee: But Sir-!

Optimus: Thank you for giving me your report Bumblebee. I hope to hear again from you soon.

It was hard enough keeping suspicion off him with just two Terrans constantly leaving his plating itching and some part of his being shifting unsettlingly. But then three more had to be forged, three more blessings that had Optimus's spark screaming in agony as his natures combatted. He had to grit his denta and clamp his field down tight enough to ache as he greeted the newsparks and learned their designations while planning for their attack against Mandroid. The humans didn't know. They didn't know what lurked amongst them. Neither did his fellows. They couldn't see, they couldn't sense the Terrans for what they were.

His optics locked onto Hashtag as she walked, scanning her endlessly for weaknesses. His audials forever perked as he observed Jawbreaker, primed and ready to find the slightest hint of aggression. His axe burned within its compartment as he watched Nightshade frolic with joy, innocently pleased to be alive. Combat protocols itched with such intensity that he had to dig his digits into his own plating with ever leap into the air Twitch took. And he had to clamp his field down so harshly ever time Thrash even looked in his direction that he could tell Megatron knew something was wrong. He wanted, no, he NEEDED to end this threat. The vermin were spreading, their taint growing as they spawned more of their number. The humans were unwitting hosts, housing parasites that were going to devour them.

The taint was spreading, and the parts of him that remained Orion could no longer fight against the Matrix's truth. All that kept him from killing the Terrans right then and there was the more heretical threat in the form of mandroid. The Terrans managed to live a day longer and it was entirely because Megatron noted his barely contained bloodlust and sent them away.

Megatron took him back to headquarters and tried to prod. But Optimus said nothing, merely twitching every now and then as he retreated to his quarters. It BURNED. His plating itched every moment of every cycle he tried to keep himself composed. Any word of the Terrans nearly had him flinging himself into a rage. The Matrix ordered that they must die. While that which remained of Orion screamed in denial and desperation, it meant nothing against the all encompassing pinpricks that ran across his frame at all hours. It took time, but the desire only grew worse. With his last bout of empathy for the little things, he reached out to Megatron with a simple order.

Optimus: You must guard the Terrans, Megatron.

Megatron: Optimus, what's going on with you? You've been off since the moment the Terrans were forged.

Optimus: If you wish for those things to continue living, you must watch them, protect them, keep them away from ME.

Megatron: Optimus-

Optimus: It burns and aches, the Matrix has made its demand. I cannot keep it contained. Those things... those innocent little abominations... I cannot be near them.

Megatron: What in Primus's name has gotten into you? What has that relic done?

Optimus: Those things... the Terrans... it hates them, it despises them. It wishes them DEAD. If you care for them, do not let our paths cross. They will not leave my grasp unharmed next we meet.

Megatron: This isn't like you. I've never seen you like this before Optimus. Whatever this is, we can deal with it. It would be difficult, but Shockwave or Starscream may have knowledge of where our medics are.

Optimus: I am out of time Megatron. They are not like us, they are tainted. I will kill them the next time they are near. Do not let them near me. Do not make me kill those sparklings.

Megatron was shocked, but he listened. He did what he could to help by taking over reports from Bumblebee and taking up residence with the Malto family for their own safety. The Maltos were rightfully concerned, especially when Megatron began to forbid the Terrans from wandering without his supervision. They didn't understand, and if possible, Megatron intended to keep it that way. Bumblebee was quickly brought into the loop and together they kept dutiful watch, always tracking the Terrans and even getting Arcee and Elita involved in tender to the Terrans when possible.

The threat was growing, and they could sense it as a new presence made itself known night after night not long after they set their watch.

Optimus tried to stay away. He tried to keep calm. He TRIED to ignore the call. But nightmares haunted his every recharge cycles, visions of the Unmaker sending force an army of his spawn... his Terran abominations. His whole frame burned and agony assaulted his spark as the Matrix pulsed, sending shocks through his body as it demanded action. It showed him visions over and over again, causing Optimus to hide in his quarters as much as physically possible for the sake of his fellows. It meant little though when G.H.O.S.T began to make their moves and Optimus found himself creeping out of his quarters in the dead of night.

The call was too strong. He could not stop himself as night after night he tread silently through the forest, taking care to keep himself out of sight as he approached the Malto home. He did not wish to harm the humans, no, he merely needed to remove the parasites. He stayed at the edge of the tree line, watching, waiting, preparing himself for an opportunity to snatch away one of the abominations and destroy it. But he could not act, he could not move, not while Megatron and Bumblebee kept their optics locked onto him at the edge of the forest every night, ensuring he remained at bay. The Matrix would not stand for him harming his own. No... just the Terrans, just the abominations needed to be removed.

It became endless habit for him to stalk the edges of the woods around the Malto home, his gaze locked onto where the Terrans rested. Periodically he would try to step out, to make progress and come nearer, but Megatron and Bumblebee were dutiful. The moment their gazes locked onto him, he hurried back into the forest, waiting for an opportunity. It helped to be on the hunt, it caused the burning to fade as duty settled instead. But even that grew to be insufficient with time. He needed to eliminate the threat, there was no other option. And so slowly but surely over the course of weeks, he came nearer and nearer before allowing himself to retreat in response to Megatron and Bumblebee raising their weapons in his direction.

Nearer and nearer, bit by bit. Soon he would have his chance. Soon he could put an end to the threat. Soon... Soon...

You know, I’ve been thinking about Starscream’s feelings towards OP and Megs in Earthspark, and I genuinely feel like he might respect and like Optimus more, despite his working for GHOST, solely because Optimus was on the opposite side, and if Starscream had been in his position, he would have done the same, and he’s not gonna pretend he wouldn’t have. But Megatron? He was their leader. He was the one they followed, who they believed in, who they gave their loyalty to. And he broke it. Abandoned his old cause and threw his soldiers under the bus for a new one, not caring what happened to them (remember that line in Age of Evolution where he told Nova Storm and Skywarp that their freedom put his cause at risk?). It’s just something I really hope will be explored in Season 2, how the enemy leader imprisoning you is way different than YOUR OWN leader imprisoning you, and I’d love to know Starscream’s thoughts on particular, especially in your AU.

I like this ask because it genuinely points out just WHY Starscream is angry and distrust Megatron. While their past between them is a HUGE part of it, a lot of it is because in his mind Megatron failed the Decepticons as a leader. And I think people missed that. Starscream actually cares about the cause, and in his mind, Megatron is a coward. And that is inevitably why he hates him, because of what he did to the other Decepticons.  In the deleted scenes, it is very very clear that Starscream’s true anger and hatred for Megatron is rooted in the fact that Megatron is up top, colluding and being happy with the Autobots and living a decent life, whereas the rest of the Decepticons are trapped underneath undergoing experiments. So the idea that  Starscream respects Optimus more as a leader isn’t too far off. In the show, he never directly speaks against Optimus’s leadership skills the same way he does Megatron.

Starscream’s thoughts are pretty much how you’ve described them in my Starop ES AU. He is pissed, he thinks Megatron is an awful leader. While he doesn’t 100% trust Optimus and while clearly he doesn’t believe in any sort of Autobot cause, he appreciates the fact that Optimus would never do what Megatron did, and more than likely, if Optimus was a Decepticon leader he would’ve either been in prison with the rest of the cons, or he would’ve done everything possible to get them out.

He respects Optimus as a leader.

And, I also wanna highlight something about how Megatron in general treats Decepticons that don’t bow down to him. The lack of empathy he has for Decepticons who aren’t worshiping the ground he walks on, or don’t see nuance in his decision (because they are you know, being torture <3) is very telling. We saw it with how dismissive and cruel he was to the Seekers, and I’m not talking about Starscream. But we also saw it with Soundwave. When Soundwave actually caused him to think critically about his betrayal against the Decepticons, he turned violent toward Soundwave; the same way he treated Starscream, Nova and Skywarp.

He likes Decepticons, as long as they are empathetic and aren’t critical toward him. As long as they are able to see him through the same lens as the Maltos. But when they don’t….

Something cool that I saw more of today was several groups doing comparisons with other cancelled TV Shows. Thank you to @OFMDCrew for these stats on twitter.

After they were posted, I did hear conflicting feelings on these (some felt it helped raise their mood, some felt it made it worse). So I wanted to point out a few things:

1. We've done a hell of a lot in 3 weeks (and signatures were our priority for most of the first two weeks, but once David Jenkins lit the beacon 8 days ago, we changed our focus). 2. We had a leadership change mid-all of this with Renew As A Crew. 3. Oh and there's other stuff in the world going on (Palestine) 4. As @saltpepperbeard says in their post "David only posted his "call to arms" just a little over a week ago. Eight days ago." So much has changed and we've STILL accomplished so much in that time too.

We are kicking ass, we really are, I promise you!

Across Twitter / IG / and Tumblr, several people have mentioned they feel like something's "in the air". That's totally a second hand "I have a feeling" thing but as you probably remember, quite a few of us had that as a bad feeling the morning before the show got cancelled. Now, if you're not into that kinda thing-- I would like to mention, that could just be because this crew is so fucking awesome, and that's why the vibe is so good-- because we're leaning on each other and take care of each other. Also when lovely people like @saltpepperbeard (as referenced above) write lovely responses to asks that can always help too. This post made ME feel better, I recommend giving it a read for a little perspective :)

It is finally time to talk about Megatron and Starscream.

Spoilers for Transformers EarthSpark under the cut.

So to start, it's fascinating to me that people are only now complaining that Megatron's characterization isn't consistent. I've thought it was inconsistent ever since episode 8, and it's only after episode 21 that I finally feel satisfied with his portrayal.

Way back in episode 3, Bumblebee asks Megatron what he would do if his troops weren't listening to him. Megatron's answer was, "When I commanded legions of Decepticons, my strategy was always intimidation. A little brute force, make a show of my weaponry, that sort of thing." He also mentions a "signature move" called the Turbo Twister, and while the details of what that is are lost to an explosion, it's pretty clear that he was using violence to keep people obedient.

Compare that to episode 8, which he spends complaining that Optimus has no problem locking up Decepticons despite not trusting GHOST. He doesn't want to use excessive force on the Cassettes when fighting them, rejects the use of devices that trap bots in their altmodes, and generally just doesn't like how the Cons are being treated. At the end of the episode, Optimus allows Megatron to let the Cassettes go, and Megatron tells Optimus that, "Perhaps your leadership style is not so different from my own."

Um. Excuse me, sir, but did you or did you not advocate for violence as a means of controlling your troops?

That's a blatant contradiction, and honestly, Starscream's "You don't know the real Megatron," sums up my problem with Megatron's redemption perfectly: we don't know the pre-redemption Megatron. We don't know what he was like when he led the Decepticons. We don't know why none of the Decepticons joined him when he allied with the Autobots. We know nothing about pre-redemption Megatron. Nothing beyond his own, cheerful anecdote about how he kept his troops in line through intimidation, and a later remark in episode 16 that, "A human soldier showed more compassion for my people than I did" (note that there is no contradiction between Megatron's self-assessment and his approach to disobedience).

Except now, thanks to the newest episodes, we do have something else. We have Starscream's assessment, and he describes Megatron almost the same way Megatron described himself: "The ruthless tyrant who ruled over us with fear and intimidation." Starscream did not say anything Megatron himself hasn't been telling us, and yet it's only now that Megatron's behavior gets labeled a contradiction?

But that's not why it's being called contradictory. I know it's not. So let's get to the heart of the issue: it's not just any Megatron who hears that Starscream has escaped and Does Not want him roaming free. It's a redeemed Megatron. It's a Megatron who argues against Decepticons being kept in cages, has a human partner, and shows nothing but patience in dealing with the Terrans.

It's a Megatron who, on learning that one of his most troublesome soldiers has escaped, falls straight back into old habits.

We have no direct evidence that Starscream was as rebellious in this continuity as in others, but I think it can be inferred. Megatron described intimidation as his approach to dealing with disobedience, and Starscream starts to treat Hashtag the same way when she refuses to obey him - then backs off when she calls him on it. So we know Starscream wasn't very obedient, and that he was "disciplined" often enough that he outright tells Megatron he doesn't feel safe with him ("Nowhere is safe if it's with you").

This matters because, when Megatron hears about Starscream's escape, it's not just some Decepticon. It's a mech Megatron could never properly control, who probably ignored orders and did his own thing constantly. Starscream isn't just an escaped Decepticon: he's a bot Megatron has been controlling with violence for who knows how long. And when that bot is no longer contained, Megatron slips back into unknown years' worth of learned behavior. Because he never had an opportunity to unlearn it. How could he, when Starscream has been locked up and Megatron didn't have to think about him?

But he doesn't stay in that mindset. Yes, he attacks Starscream on sight. But he backs down when Hashtag intervenes (he's already lowering his weapon before she's even said two sentences in Starscream's defense), and he makes no further attempt to capture Starscream. Quite the opposite: at the end of the episode, he extends an offer of safety, and when Starscream rejects that offer, Megatron just... lets him go. Just like he let the Cassettes go back in episode 8.

Megatron's redemption wasn't somehow undone because he made a bad decision on impulse. Not if all it took for him to change his mind about Starscream was seeing him try to save Hashtag from the Dweller. If anything, it showed that Megatron is committed to his new ideals. Even if he slips up sometimes, he isn't going to return to his old ways. And I don't know about anyone else, but I needed that.

I have spent the entire season doubting Megatron's redemption. It didn't feel like redemption; it felt like the writers just wanted a nice Megatron, and his old mindset could be handwaved as, "Well, he was bad once, but he's good now". Seeing him default to old behavior, even just a little, connected the Megatron we know and the one we only hear about in a real, tangible way. And at least to me, that makes his characterization stronger.

Of course, there's still that contradictory comment about Optimus' leadership style being "not so different" from Megatron's. But I don't think a single line of weird dialogue is worth getting worked up over.

As the war ramped up, it was clear that this issue was not going away. Not only was I struggling to process Oct. 7 with friends, family, and my community, I was also navigating the conflict every day at work. As the only Jewish voice in the organization, I was repeatedly put in the position to speak for all Jewish people—an impossible task—or to defend my perspective and why it did not align with that of Jewish Voices for Peace, a group that purports to represent Jews but rejects the basic premise of a Jewish homeland, or similar entities. At the same time, if I advocated for DCAF staying out of this discussion, I was told I was silencing the organization and its staff. I shared my heartbreak about the violence against both Israelis and Palestinians and how, though complex, these feelings could coexist. In return, it was explained to me, often by people with no direct connection to the land or its people, that I needed to understand “context.”

At the same time, other abortion funds and reproductive health organizations began issuing statements about what was happening in Gaza. These statements contained much of the same offensive nomenclature as DCAF’s draft and some, like ARC-Southeast’s letter, went further, calling Zionism—the belief that Israel simply has a right to exist—“a contradiction to Reproductive Justice.” Every member of the DCAF staff except me signed on to a letter to the board advising them that they would be participating in a walkout in support of Palestine. The letter noted, “We are using our collective power as DCAF workers to show up for Gazans and call for an immediate ceasefire, as well as liberation for Palestinians ... we cannot ignore the mass violations to human rights and sexual and reproductive health outcomes that we’re seeing out of Gaza.” Remarkably, the letter neglected any mention of health outcomes for the Israeli survivors of rape or assault, or for the hostages.

In an effort to work collaboratively and keep focused on our primary objectives, we agreed that establishing social media procedures was a critical next step. On Nov. 14, I and the communications team sat down to decide what, if anything, DCAF would be posting about the war and to ensure there were not more situations like that which occurred around the “Gaza Carousel.” I recognized that my colleagues felt strongly that DCAF should weigh in on this discussion, and in an effort to compromise, I agreed to a process that would allow DCAF to uplift existing content from trusted partners in the field, but not create original content, as this would be beyond our expertise. We agreed to abstain from using nomenclature that could be distracting or divisive to our community, such as the “Free Palestine” hashtag or calling Israel’s actions “genocide.” We developed a system to review and discuss potentially controversial content related to the war before posting, starting with a small group of reviewers, including me, and escalating to a vote by a mix of board and staff.

The following morning, I circulated the notes from that meeting to DCAF leadership and members of the Board. At 3 p.m. that day, I was alerted by a Jewish DCAF volunteer that the DCAF Instagram feed featured graphics from The Washington Post about deaths in Gaza with commentary overlaid, specifically that “collective punishment is the tool of fascists” and that what was happening in Gaza was “a prime and top-of-mind example of said collective punishment.” I immediately flagged this for the communications team and asked if perhaps the content was posted inadvertently since it violated the norms we had established in the meeting the previous day. Surely, equating the actions of the entire State of Israel with fascism was a perspective that needed to be discussed as potentially controversial. They assured me the post was intentional (they later stealthily removed it).

Immediately, DCAF received angry messages from Jewish members of their community. The messages criticized DCAF for being so one-sided on the issue. They were furious that DCAF, who claimed to deeply value reproductive justice, had remained silent on the rapes of Israeli women. They stated that as Jews, they felt abandoned by and isolated from the organization.

I wrote a note to myself on how to navigate this slightly sketchy time in the campaign, writing things down helps me think more affectively and to remember what I've thought about. As I was reading it this morning, I wondered if others would find it useful, so I changed the writing slightly, here you are:

. I know a lot of people have said it already, but it needs repeating over and over: if you feel burnt out, take a break. It's okay. Many of us have invested a lot of time into this campaign over the last two weeks. It's natural to want to slow down or step back. If you're struggling to take a break, think of it as a strategic rest- you're resting so you can come back stronger and more motivated than before.

. If you want to interact with the people who run large accounts, avoid using phrases along the lines of "I trust you", "I rely on you", "you always do the right thing" etc. At best this kind of language puts undue pressure on the person, at worst it sounds threatening. Try to stick to "[a specific thing you did] helped me today" a simple "thank you", or sending them something lighthearted to help them smile.

. Understand that while many people are taking breaks and feeling de-motivated at the moment, the interaction on your posts will likely go down. I know hardly any of us are doing this for clout or likes, but the sudden change in the amount of interaction can be jarring, and it's natural to feel weird about it. It's important to not rely on others for your motivation and make sure you're doing this purely because you want to.

. Others are not responsible for our motivation and vice versa, we are not responsible for theirs. However, if you are online and want to help, you can like, comment, QRT/reblog the posts that have little to no interactions. Make sure if you're QRTing/reblogging to add the tags. You can find these posts easily by searching one of the tags: #saveOFMD, #RenewAsACrew, #AdoptOurCrew, and put the "latest/newest" filter on.

. To put into perspective why you may be feeling strange: We celebrated the highly anticipated ads along with many of the cast and crew. That was incredible. Then, without warning to anyone, DJ put out a beautiful and hopeful message thanking us and involving us in the shopping process. While this was so very wonderful, it also turned the campaign around in a complete 180. While this was going on, the RAAC team needed to have a change of leadership. The reason for this change isn't something we need to be concerning ourselves with, or trying to speculate on. The point is, they were not available to provide guidance because they weren't able to anticipate the sudden nature of the change (not blaming DJ at all, the timing was just a bit rubbish). Responsibility fell onto Jac who has said from the beginning that they are uncomfortable with being in a main leadership role. That boundary was pushed and broken. In turn, through no single person's fault at all, things got confusing and stressful. So no, you're not weird, crazy or silly for feeling worried, scared or upset.

. And finally to end it on a high note, tonally, OFMD is a silly and lighthearted show. While important aspects like representation of various groups is the main reason we like it so much, the other huge reason is that it makes us laugh. In my opinion, this is why we're such a chilled out fandom in general . We're all here to have a good time. So let's make some memes! Let's share funny scenes! Let's be silly, and have fun! Not only does this get you posting and using the hashtags, it'll help you to laugh, and it'll help to lift this weird vibe we've got going on at the moment.

Thoughts on the Earthspark episode synopses because I am very excited:

So Starscream is this arc's main villain? That's awesome, I'm really hoping this will lean into the idea of him being competent and a worthy option for Decepticon leadership. It would be an interesting contrast to the Starscream from the Skybound comics whose portrayal leans into the cruel and pathetic elements way more.

Also, given Starscream seems to be the main villain of this arc and we know at the very least that Shockwave's working for him, it is so them to be like, "Ah, those Terrans are actually great. Time to make some Terrans that are also Decepticons" LMAO Also, Starscream and Shockwave, but Starscream's in charge! Yay, I loved their dynamic in the Marvel comics!

It sounds like my hope for an episode all about Hashtag picking a new alt-mode and what that means about identity will be realized! I'm especially excited for this one. I feel like the episodes about Nightshade and Jawbreaker and their identities were some of the best of the first season, and it could be a good followup to how Hashtag pushed Jawbreaker to get an alt-mode earlier and really quickly picked her own the first time around.

There had better be a Cosmic Carnival reference in the episode about the fair!

I'm not certain, but I have a feeling the direction this show is heading in is saying that Autobots and Decepticons are both flawed and oppressed by Quintessons and continuing to suffer because of what was put in place by them. Given that GHOST is now gone, this would make sense for a new direction. Dreamwave-ish maybe? Definitely curious about how Mo and Thrash will interact with the Quintesson Executioner, too. That could go in a lot of different directions.

It will be interesting to see Twitch grappling with somebody having the same kind of body as her. Especially from a lore perspective because of course this has always been totally normal for transformers, but for the Terrans that would a totally new experience?

I'm also curious about the combining—it sounds like an amplification of the Cyber-sleeves allowing the Maltos to feel each other's feelings. There's a lot of exploration of the mentalities of combiners that hasn't been tapped into yet, so I'm excited to see how this will be handled from a thematic perspective.

The episode about Optimus's trailer—I can't wait to find out if this is a lighter, more fun episode after how dark and intense every single episode at the end of season one felt, or if it sounds like it'll be fun but be another horrifying episode like the one with the bear in the first season LMAO

Prowl was confirmed to be in the show by character designer Nick Roche, who said the design on toy boxart will be used. Roche also mentioned he might not be characterized like the one in the IDW comics (good, that would be ridiculous and awful). But Prowl isn't mentioned in these synopses. Maybe it's like with Grimlock, where there's an episode focused on the character but that's not until another batch of the season?

Ok so some more screen shots for EarthSpark popped up to advertise the show.

Seems I was not far off on the Combiner Sideswipe + Grimlock comparison.

They just leaned into a less horrific version of this:

I think this confirms the Cyber Synch thing in show IS the Cyber Combiner gimmick going by Aftermath and Jawbreaker.

Yes the giant purple truck guy is indeed Aftermath.

Which means it’s now confirmed the twink robot is indeed a Quintesson.

Is it me or does the Executioner Quint seem oddly… naked? Maybe he gets his other parts later.

Anyway.

Aftermath is indeed a Decepticon, along with Spitfire, both being Terran Decepticons created by the Decepticons. I guess calling them “Terracons” was out of the question.

One thing that sticks out about Spitfire is her chest:

That’s an Emberstone shard in there, and it visually resembles what was done with TFA Starscream.

And by extension all Transformers in Animated created from Allspark Shards. They really are borrowing fairly heavily from Animated here, the shattered life giving relics being hunted down by both sides. The Allspark in TFA surprisingly wasn’t as big of a factor later on, but the Autobots managed to reassemble it into a Matrix of Leadership style device in the finale. The Decepticons weren’t as interested in hunting shards, Megatron having bigger fish to fry on Cybertron, with the only time he really used the shards was to power the Lugnut Supremes he cloned from Omega Supreme. Starscream got the most use out of the shards, and that’s repeated here with ES Starscream wanting to collect the shards for his own purposes. And like TFA, he’s used two shards already to make troops.

Whether we get more is unclear. As much as I’m not a fan of Spitfire being a clone (?) of Twitch, I’m slightly surprised there’s not a clone of Hashtag to reference Starscream’s connection to her. Oh well, I guess the one genuinely interesting idea Catt did left with them.

I actually kinda find it funny Hashtag lost weight when she became a car instead of a surveillance van. Anyhoo, this suggests the so called secret of Witwicky is it used to be some Quintesson outpost of some sort. This post in particular suggests some sort of Cyberforming at play? Or it’s the interior of a Quint ship. Either way it’s not looking good for what is likely the true final boss of the series.

Going back to the combiner thing, this sticks out.

It’s very reminiscent of Digimon Digivolution sequences, in particular DNA Digivolution and DigiXros.

The earlier Aftermath combiner implies this is the EarthSpark equivalent of RiD15’s Crash Combiners…

But as it appears Thrash & Twitch are combining, and there’s no toys of a Thrash combiner…

We can only assume until the episodes drop what Thrash & Twitch look like combined. Personally I think the Combine ‘n’ Ride would fit, make Twitch look like SuperBike, lol.

Riddle Info Compilation part 24: Riddle and Cater

Cater is quick to compliment Riddle in his efforts to soothe Riddle’s rages, commenting on his cuteness, his flying abilities and his patience with tutoring.

This is a habit that may be rubbing off on Ace: When Riddle becomes enraged at a ghost for calling him short during Phantom Bride, Ace assures him that “he doesn’t appreciate what a swell guy you are! Talk about a rube, am I right? Ha ha ha…”

Riddle will occasionally compliment Cater as well, telling him during Halloween that he has a talent for acting and saying that Cater has a superb sense of balance, so it would be best to go to him for flying advice.

Riddle’s dorm vignette is dedicated to Riddle tutoring Cater: Cater is in danger of failing a practical magic exam (he is struggling specifically with “auto spells”) and Riddle takes it upon himself to create the perfect study guide for him, despite being a year behind Cater in school.

When Cater fails to memorize all 300 pages Riddle becomes enraged, not impressed by Cater’s explanation that he wishes he could memorize it, but that is just not how his brain works.

After receiving guidance from Trey, Riddle creates a Magicam account and begins teaching Cater the information he needs for his exam via photos and hashtags.

Thanks to Riddle’s efforts Cater passes the exam and offers to take him out to a pancake cafe in thanks.

Cater is apparently seen as “one of Riddle’s cronies” by other members of Heartslabyul: in a vignette we see students become irate with Cater for his constant Magicam posting and report him to Riddle for slacking off. Riddle gives him a very light warning, much to the annoyance of the students who wanted to see him collar Cater.

After the students misplace the instructions on proper teaware storage they turn on Cater, telling him that he was in charge but goofing off, asking him where his sense of leadership is and telling him he failed them all.

When Cater follows his apology up with a picture for Magicam the students demand that Riddle use his unique magic, but Ace realizes that Cater’s constant Magicamming has created a photographic inventory of all the teaware that needs to be put away.

The students remain unhappy about Cater’s lack of consequences while Cater uses an “auto spell”—recently taught to him by Riddle—to put the dishes away.

Ace tries to take credit for saving the day, but Riddle and Trey point out that nothing Cater did was on accident: the supposed “mishap” was crafted intentionally so that he could enlist help outside his group to complete his task.

Despite Cater’s reputation of being one of Riddle’s cronies, Riddle seems just as strict with Cater as he is with everyone: when he catches Cater cheating on a PE assignment through the use of his unique magic he insists upon reporting the infraction to Vargas.

Much like Trey, Cater also defends Riddle to others: When Grim expresses disappointment at how little Riddle has changed between Books 1 and 2 Cater insists that Riddle is much nicer then before, “and we all appreciate that Riddle diligence.”

When Ace expresses surprise at Riddle’s inability to recognize Cater’s trendy phone case Cater defends Riddle again, saying that he has just never had an interest in trends.

Cater is not as close to Riddle as is Trey, and is entirely aware of it: when Riddle offers to let Cater run away from an overblot-Leona, Cater jokes that, “Trey would’t let me hear the end of that.”

In a Chat Cater says that Trey feels like the stand-in for the King of Hearts, as the guy who devoutly supported his partner, the queen. Cater says, “As far as Heartslabyul is concerned, you guys are both indispensable!”

(Riddle seems to shift between referring to himself as both the Queen and the King of Heartslabyul, but Queen is more common.)
