#Lego Frankenstein's Monster

Photos of when I visited Boris Karloff’s memorial plaque in Gildford crematorium, Surrey in July 2022.

It was a very modest memorial, just the same as every other one in the garden of remembrance. I liked that there is a yellow rose growing over his plaque, as Karloff used to grow roses and I like to think of his ghost tending to the bushes there.

Unfortunately I can never confirm whether or not his ashes were actually spread in the crematorium or not. I have heard conflicting stories.

I was a little disappointed that Boris wasn't there to greet me like this...

but maybe he was sick of the living by the time I visited! Our conversation was pleasant, but rather one-sided.

I hope to visit again soon.

Ryu Number: "Jaws," the shark from "Jaws"

Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on a novel by Peter Benchley, the 1975 thriller Jaws tells the story of Larry Vaughn (played by Murray Hamilton), the mayor of the New England beach town of Amity Island. When a couple of ivory-tower out-of-towners recommend he close the beaches for fear of shark attack—a move that would herald economic disaster in the town's tourist season—Vaughn sticks to his principles and refuses. By the end of the film the shark—an isolated aberration—has been successfully disposed of, the out-of-towners have learned something about life in Amity Island, and Vaughn's position as mayor is all the more secure.

There are a number of terrible Jaws games, but the cleanest way to get to the shark is probably Universal Studios Theme Parks Adventure, a video game where you walk around a Universal Studios theme park, taking part in such thrilling activities as picking up garbage and shaking hands with Universal Studios characters.

Do this long enough, and Woody Woodpecker will even let you play a smattering of minigames based on Universal Studio franchises!

(And yes, that's definitely Jaws and not one of the Jawsoids from the sequels. You're on the Orca, Quint's boat, which didn't make it past its first appearance, on account of portions removed by shark.)

(I mean, it's not a faithful rendition of the Orca, but it's the Orca. Probably.)

Alright, so Jaws has a Ryu Number of at most 3. But can we do better?

Remember that bit I mentioned up there about shaking hands with Universal Studios characters? As you wander about the godforsaken place, looking for stray litter to exchange for points to exchange for hats to exchange for actual gameplay, you might run across this guy:

Right—Frankenstein is a Universal Studios character. The twin-bolted "fire no good" version of him, anyway. Which counts!

Granted, to me, those superdeformed proportions make this look more like a guy dressed in a Frankenstein mascot costume than the Frankenstein himself...

...but you can also find E.T. wandering the park, and he seems the real deal—probably. Which doesn't necessarily mean Frankenstein is also the real deal, but sort of implies it? Maybe? Look, I dunno. Reality gets kind of liminal at Universal Studios.

Anyway, if you are willing to say that that is Frankenstein, that shortens Jaws' Ryu Number nicely to at most 2.

("But the shark isn't named "Jaws"; "Jaws" is the name of the movie—" Yeah well Woody Woodpecker says otherwise.)

Minifigure Showcase: Frankenstein's Monster

Continuing my Universal Monsters theme for my custom minifigures, the following three are a part of the iconic story by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. While I admire the depth and nuance of Shelley's original, gripping tale, the farther removed, more iconic story of the mad scientist often identified with Halloween is undeniably one of the most influential media of all time. As such, the minifigures depict characters inspired by the 1931 film starring Boris Karloff, and other such adaptations.

Doctor Victor Frankenstein

The namesake of the story, and the monster itself, Doctor Frankenstein is the quintessential mad scientist. The iconic image of the wild-haired, manic genius in goggles is captured using the Lego Batman Movie Joker's hair in black, and the head of Lego Marvel's Doctor Octopus. The torso is an altered version of the Minifigure series "crazy scientist".

2. Igor

Frankenstein's iconic, mistreated servant has interestingly been depicted in Lego before, in the Lego Studios line. My figure takes some cues from that figure, with the backpack replicating the hunched back, and the old hood piece and cain. I use a head with sunken eyes and medium-length legs to create a short and hunched figure.

3. Frankenstein's Monster

And now, the crown jewel of this set, Frankenstein's Monster himself. The head is from the Monster Fighter's version of the character, the one that most faithfully depicts the character. However, the forehead/eyebrows is from the Minifigures Monster Rocker Minifigure, which uses more iconic stitches as opposed to the more comical clips used by the Monster fighters figure. The real star of the show here is the torso, which is a re-detailed version of Hagrid's yule ball suit. The reddish brown torso and arms have olive green hands inserted and is decorated to recreate the ramshackle appearance of the Monster's clothing. This culminates in a Monster that towers over other minifigures without being too gigantic, and that faithfully depicts the Monster in a way the is instantly recognizable.

Disaster Curses headcanons:

Regardless of what he tells them, Kenjaku sees the disaster curses less as individuals and more as personal projects, of sorts. He wants to see just how far he can push them, just how strong they’ll get before he ultimately absorbs them. They’re like science experiments—fun to play with and test the limits of, fun to put in scenarios to see just how much they’re capable of, but ultimately nothing more than a mild inconvenience for him if they break.

Jogo is the oldest of the disaster curses, and he knows exactly how Kenjaku sees them. It pisses him off, but he knows he can’t say anything, because that would risk the others’ safety. He sees himself as their caretaker of sorts, and when Kenjaku came along, Jogo only agreed to work with him out of common interests.

Jogo doesn’t trust Kenjaku. He never will.

Being a cursed womb, Dagon has about the same mental capacity as a human five-year-old. Ever since Mahito brought him some, his favorite toys are Legos.

Speaking of Mahito, Kenjaku heavily favors him over the others, due to his abilities and potential, and treats him as a sort of “golden child.” Mahito is unaware of the fact that Kenjaku’s love for him is little more than an act to keep him complacent and easy to manipulate, and that he sees Mahito as little more than a means to an end.

Choso is extremely jealous and resentful of Mahito because of how Kenjaku dotes on him, even before he finds out that Kenjaku is his father. Choso doesn’t understand why he and his brothers weren’t treated with the same love and affection (no matter how insincere), and were instead locked away as cursed wombs and left to rot.

Hanami has a MASSIVE crush on Jogo. Unfortunately, he sees her more like an apprentice, or a ward, of sorts, so she refuses to confess. This doesn’t stop Mahito from teasing her mercilessly about it.

If Jogo could go anywhere and do anything, without fear of being discovered and exorcised, he’d take his family the disaster curses on a vacation to Hawaii. Hanami would love the greenery, Dagon would love the ocean being so close by, and Mahito loves doing anything new, really. Jogo himself would go visit the active calderas. Then he’d take a nice long nap, because wrangling the other three is a full-time job.

The reason Mahito is so compelled to kill and torment is because of the strange line between worlds he’s forced to walk—he’s too human-like to fit in with curses, but too monstrous to fit in with humans. Kenjaku and the disaster curses are the only family he’s ever known, and he wants to please the closest thing he has to a father, so he has to be as vicious as a curse, obviously. He needs to kill the human part of himself again and again, because if he thinks for too long about where he came from, he gets so confused and scared that his stomach hurts.

He loves human things though, like their food and entertainment. Mahito’s favorite byproduct of humanity is their literature, and given the opportunity, he’d cuddle up in a nice cozy library with a good book for hours.

His favorite book is Frankenstein. He likes the monster more than the doctor.

Mahito might annoy the fuck out of him sometimes, but Jogo really cares about him. He’s especially bitter that Mahito sees Kenjaku—a human who ultimately doesn’t care about his wellbeing and intends to use Mahito as a pawn in his little shell game—as a parental figure, instead of Jogo himself.

Hanami is the one who looks after Dagon most of the time, while Mahito is more of an irresponsible older brother figure who teaches him swear words.

Jogo’s favorite smoking pipe is one Mahito made him out of a transfigured human. It still warbles and whines sometimes when he uses it.

The disaster curses automatically assume that because he’s half human, Choso knows everything there is to know about humans, so they go to him when Kenjaku gets annoyed by their questions. Choso’s too awkward to tell them he’s almost as clueless as they are, so he’s been bullshitting the answers for a while now.

Because of this, Hanami is fully convinced all humans can levitate like Gojo and just choose not to. She is confused and terrified.

Hanami really wishes cursed spirits showed up in photographs, because Dagon really likes it when she grows flower crowns for him to wear and play with. He looks so cute, and Hanami hates that she only has her memory to rely on.

There’s a small part of Mahito that feels guilty for killing, but he squashes it every time, because what would he be without his family?

For reference: You know how the GEverse originally started off as an elaborate Ninjago fanfic that evolved into even more elaborate fanon? Everything to do with the Monster Realm, the Council of Warlocks, the new Monster Fighters; That also started off as fanon for another, much more obscure and shorter-lived Lego theme called Monster Fighters.

It only lasted for one wave and I only got one set (the Werewolf one), but MAN I loved the theme's vibes and aesthetic and played the website's game for a bit, too! I liked it so much that I wrote a 'novelization' for the story that I posted on the Lego message boards, although I never finished it alas.

Stuff like the Magestones? Very blatantly the Moonstones, down to identical designs for all save one of them; Since I was changing a few things to make it more my own now that I embraced it as such, that made me realize I could also change the Moonstones, now Magestones.

And so the red one, once sporting a vampire bat as its symbol and giving the power to control one's minions, was instead reimagined as an homage to the Philosopher's Stone, with a bubbling witch's cauldron. I did this to make it more befitting its wielder Kisonus, though in-universe, the Red Magestone's power of transmutation was used by Varney to alter its symbol to that of a bat, to fit HIS aesthetics. The Red Magestone is strange and special like that.

Since vampires in a lot of media can transform into different creatures, I imagine this is how Varney used the Red Magestone; I think in the GEverse that all vampires can turn into bats, but maybe Varney is special in that he can transform into an entire swarm thanks to the Red Magestone. When Kisonus gets it back, she restores its intended appearance.

But yeah, all that lore about how the current Monster Fighters are technically a next-gen story, and how they follow in the footsteps of their predecessors? That story is the one seen in Lego Monster Fighters, with the vampire villain being named just Lord Vampyre, and his wife nameless; In my fanfic, I named her Lydia E. Vampyre and I intend to keep that.

I haven't figured out and finalized everything yet, so I'm still reusing a lot of the same names and appearances as placeholders. So the group is called the Monster Fighters, and the family that our main protagonist belongs to is known as the Rathbones. I'll figure out eventually a new, legally-distinct surname. The same goes for the other OG Monster Fighters, who are currently identical to their Lego counterparts.

Everything to do with the Council of Warlocks was my idea for a sequel to the Lego Monster Fighters story; Like what if after Lord Vampyre was defeated, there was a new set of villains to claim the Moonstones!!! What if we delved into the mysterious origins of the Moonstones, that sort of thing. This story was always meant to be connected with the larger Ninjago universe, more specifically my fanon version of it, and the same applies now that both stories are independent from their source material.

I probably need to change a bit more about this story in case this somehow ever becomes like, a bigger thing and I don't want a lawsuit from Lego. Monster Fighters is relatively obscure and short-lived though, so I wonder how much I could 'get away with' so to speak. Lego Monster Fighters itself is a mishmash of legally-distinct takes on Universal Monsters after all, and a lot of the elements, individually, aren't too unique. But all together, it's definitely a bit obvious.

But if Resident Evil 8 and Metroid Dread can rip off mechanical monstrosities from Frankenstein's Army and Red Planet without any issue, maybe it's not that big a deal. Most of what I'm borrowing is relegated as backstory anyhow, with the main focus being on a new generation and new, original villains; It's mostly the Magestones that carry over, so I might not be seen as 'worth the effort'. If Lego can avoid a lawsuit from Universal by making their blatant homage barely different enough, maybe I'm also safe, though I don't have an army of lawyers. But then again, everyone's done legally-distinct knock offs of Universal Monsters, so it's the Magestones I'm more worried about haha.

Time for a Heinrich lore dump!

Welp since I built a Lego-not-Lego model of my him I think it’s the best time to talk about my favorite fast boy Heinrich.

Heinrich is/is based on the real life preserved engine DR BR 18 201 or the number it currently wears 02 0201-0 (Which looks god awful on the smoke box imo). Heinrich’s history is basically the same, but enough chit chat it’s time for lore!

And it all starts with the VES Halle (Saale). The facility was located in the GDR (East Germany) and needed an engine to haul newly built express coaches at speeds up to 160 km/h (ca. 100mph) and beyond for testing purposes. A newly constructed Diesel for this task would have been too expensive so it was decided that the new engine was going to be a steam locomotive. For historical context in East Germany steam lasted into the 1980s.

So the project came to life, spearheaded by Dr. Baumberg from the VES. He for example is responsible for the design of streamlining which was inspired by SNCF 232.U.1. Another quirk this engine received was Giesl-Ejector. Which most of you know Peter Sam has too. In 1960 the construction began. The works responsible was the RAW Meiningen which is still operational as the Dampflokwerk Meiningen (they built Tornado’s and are involved in the P2 project). To realize Baumberg’s vision the engineers decided to attempt something. They had heard about Henry’s rebuilt at Crewe years prior. So an engine called Heinrich was brought in together with parts of two other engines and a tender from a forth engine. This original Heinrich was DRG 61 002 one of the two Henschel-Wegmann Tank engines.

They went to work and on the 31st of May 1961 their job was done. But to the shock of everyone involved behind the scenes this new engine woke up only knowing its name: Heinrich. What had gone wrong was that original Heinrich didn’t want to be so heavily altered so he basically perished, only traces of his memory remain. This has consequences for current day Heinrich. He has terrible nightmares which cause him to have bouts of insomnia. And becoming a scaredy-engine when left alone by his crew at night. But regardless this Frankenstein’s monster of an engine was not only successful but also became the fastest, in service steam locomotive in the world. The men at the VES grew fond of their new engine. They dubbed him Jimmo, because they felt like Heinrich sounded too pompous for such a chipper and friendly fella. Heinrich/Jimmo was rarely seen outside of the VES, when he was he could depart 10 minutes late and still arrive on time at his destination. Early on it was decided to give him oil firing and during the oil crisis Baumberg insisted on keeping it or he would need an army of firemen for to get Jimmo going. Because the high speed has its price, after all the three cylinders that power a set of 6 driving wheels with a diameter of 2.30 meters (ca. 7’5”) don’t power themselves. Heinrich after the end of his service life changed owners a few times. Nowadays he’s owned by the WFL and lives at Nossen which is near Dresden.

He’s revered by engines and enthusiasts alike. But he’s rather reluctant to be that famous. He only leverages his authority if an engine acts like an asshat. Heinrich has a strong sense of justice, but also a habit of being very direct. Which often results in him unintentionally trampling over the feelings of others. This brutal honesty is something Henry and Charlie like about him. Heinrich is also helpful and curious about the world. Although his curiosity occasionally results in embarrassing mishaps. Like when he chased a butterfly, demolished a set of buffers and ended up off the rails. Another quirk is that when turned on the turntable he instantly falls asleep. He and Henry become friends almost instantly. Henry helps him overcome his fear of the dark. And also influences him to become a bit more mature. Heinrich is also very respectful towards engines like Flying Scotsman and Saxonia. He even called Henry “sir” when the two green engines first met. Heinrich loves going fast. He gets ecstatic when he travels at high speeds. It’s a child like joy. He’s truly one of Germany’s finest.

I don't know, it really explotes the nostalgic kidcore/weirdcore factor of the backrooms. Ignoring the risks, sounds like a cool place to rest.

Writing: Fanfiction (all the time) and poetry (sometimes)

Drawing: I’m always doodling something in my sketchbook, on receipt paper, or on my drinks (I am unstoppable)

Reading: I LOVE folksy horror books as well as retellings of popular fairy tales & romance

Collecting: Legos, Funko, Plants, Squishmallows, you name it! My current fixation is on finding a Bill Denbrough Pop to complete my Losers Club set :)
