“She's a Killer Queen; gunpowder, gelatin; dynamite with a laser beam; guaranteed to blow your mind (anytime).” – Queen, Killer Queen
*~*~*~*
“Hey, I like them!” You huff, grasping the bouquet of spider lilies closer to your chest, making the paper wrinkle up. At your response, Aina crosses her arms and sighs, looking at the other flower arrangements sitting on the shelves behind you.
“Those are too expensive.” Aina rebuts. She points, and you turn around to follow it, and in turn frown.
Because of the low supply, the price of spider lily bouquets has increased to 700 credits per arrangement.
Kafka, pretending to look at the roses in the corner not facing the two of you, does not try to hide her smile and slight chuckle as you gasp at the sign’s words. “Cute…”
Once more, you exhale with a mix of frustration and disappointment, forcefully planting your foot on the ground. Gradually, your stance transforms into that of a despondent balloon losing its air.
Utterly adorable.
“Why seven hundred? Flowers grow from the ground and they take hardly any effort to bundle up!” Aina puts her thumb and pointer finger on her temples, rubbing them like your question and exclamation just gave her the biggest headache in all of existence. She sighs.
You sigh too, grasping onto the spider lilies even harder.
“Spider lilies also represent bad luck.” She says, almost groaning.
Neither of you know if you can be reasonable enough to let Aina be your impulse control as she always has been. “The red shade is really pretty and the tendrils are pretty too!”
“Please put them back, it is a bad financial investment.” You shake your head. “Please. [First]. [First], please. We still have to go and buy ingredients for dinner tonight. If it makes you feel better I can also help you bake dessert.”
Kafka already knows what you are going to make tonight. Pasta with bechamel sauce along with apple cake.
“[First], at least choose a less expensive bouquet. That way we can afford everything. Plus we maybe can get something else small that is not on our grocery list.” Aina tries her best to put on a more gentle smile. “Please.”
Kafka moves to near the entrance of the food section of the store, waiting for this little trifle to be over with. She pretends to be looking at the meat aisle as that is the area closest to the flowers, ironically enough.
“Sigh…” She purrs, imagining your hair loose and gently wrapped around her fingertips. “I wonder if you would prefer blush or velvet… maybe burgundy?”
She imagines the way you will place your lips on hers and slowly but surely… move down.
She will do the same to you with her own.
“Maybe white.” She muses, thinking of different types of fabric to put on you. “Or perhaps black.”
Kafka wonders what you would choose if she brought you to a boutique rather than going by herself.
“Hm…” She murmurs, her mind going through many, many possibilities of the future ahead.
Then, she hears your triumphant laugh and then turns around to see you hugging Aina with the bouquet in tow. “I love you!”
“Uh-huh. Sure.” Aina mutters, crossing her arms and looking away from your happy face with a blush. “Just put them in the basket. We’ve used enough time here as it is.” You kiss her cheek, and her face only gets redder. “L-Let’s just go already.”
You only hug her tighter.
“Sir, yes, sir!” You exclaim, saluting, and Aina rolls her eyes.
Kafka’s smile falters.
“Tsk. Young love, I suppose.”
Of all the future possibilities, none of them will result in full success if Aina is still in the picture.
“Juliets.”
At the sight of you kissing Aina’s cheek again, Kafka resists the urge to bite her lip.
“But with great risk… comes great reward.”
She imagines how you would look under her.
Aina eventually manages to pry you off of her. “Alright, that’s enough, you’re praising me like I just saved your life or something.”
“You did!” You pout, almost cooing and still laughing joyfully. “This bouquet is the only medicine that can ever heal me of what ails me!”
Both Kafka and Aina sigh at the same time but for entirely different reasons.
But Kafka is the one who also licks her lips afterward. “I think perhaps a chemise would suit you best.”
“Let’s go to the fruits first!” You exclaim, pulling Aina along by the hand while she holds the basket.
“Which type of apple?” Aina asks, but Kafka already knows the answer. “Be sure to not get the very expensive ones this time.”
You two go past Kafka.
She takes out her phone for a split second and clicks the button.
It has been the closest you have ever been to her while you were conscious. But she hopes that soon, you will be even closer.
Wait, no. She knows that you will.
“Cute.” She whispers, booping the picture of you’s nose.
This has already become a favorite amongst the many, many photos she has of you.
Where you go, she follows. “Cute.” Surely, eventually, when you know of her, you will know that all too well. “So cute.”
She sees you pointing to the apples with a pinkish tint. Rose apples. Quite rare, if Kafka remembers correctly.
As Aina reads the sign next to them, she immediately shakes her head. “Way too expensive.”
Due to the cost of importation/exportation as well as the rarity of this species, the value of this type of product is quite high. One apple is worth 1600 credits.
You surprisingly show agreement this time, promptly diverting your attention to the assortment of apple varieties, accompanied by a hint of nervous laughter.
You end up choosing the Honeycrisps. They are good for baking cakes, you tell Aina as Kafka eavesdrops as she always does.
She imagines you baking for her and sitting on her lap.
It was only a matter of time because regardless of who is with you, one thing about you never changes; your naivety.
“All that is left is to be patient.”

✎ᝰ┆And On That Day
─❏ Warnings: gore & s/h
─❏ Characters: Fyodor Dostoevsky
─❏ Synopsis: Fyodor discovers his ability as a child.
─❏ A/N: this is one of my favorites
﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
There was no warning.
A small boy, frail and blushed with a fine, rosy color, is guided by his feet from the towering cathedral to his own abode where those he is familiar with await his return. His hair pulled neatly back and held together with a purple ribbon, regal and beautiful to match his eyes. Those eyes filled with a surprising innocence—surprising due to the sins he had just bore witness to despite being in a supposed “holy” place. Dressed in his sunday best, a nice, pure white color with shades of cream mixed in and accents of purple and the occasional black.
The boy stopped on the side of the stone pathway after some flowers—white lilies—had caught his eye amongst the vegetation. He ignored the risk of staining his linens with the lively green from the grass, kneeled in it and began to gather the flowers. That was, until he discovered something among those innocent, white lilies.
He found that the white lilies had hidden a small sparrow, some crimson ink splattered around the fragile creature. After observing the bird very carefully, studying it, he realized it was in fact still breathing. The young boy decided to become the sparrow's savior.
Foolish decision.
The foolish child picked up the bird only for that exact same crimson ink that decorated the flowers to come and splatter on his own linens. The bird had stopped breathing suddenly, squawking in pain as if it were begging for its life in its final moments.
The once innocent child soon realized that this bird was no sparrow, instead it was a crow—a dead, young crow. And now that crows blood stained every bit of the child’s mind.
What a foolish child he had been to believe that not only was the bird a sparrow, but also that he would be able to save it.
The child carried the dead crow home in his hands, cold and lifeless, he still held onto the idea that he could do something for it. He hid it away in the basement, wrapping it in a scrap of white fabric. The crimson of the crow stained the fabric, evidence of the young man’s crime.
Every day the boy would check on the crow, hoping he could do something to save it—childlike delusions.
That is, until one day he found the crows carcass on the floor, the scrap of fabric had been torn and thrown to the side. Surrounding the carcass were the carriers of disease themselves: rats. They gnawed at the bones, tearing the day's old flesh off and spitting out the feathers. Their whiskers laden with blood and chunks of their meal. Suddenly the boy realized that the room had smelled like death the entire time. This most certainly was his punishment.
While at first he was horrified that the rats would do such a thing, he soon realized why they had done it: to survive. Every living being has a certain urge to live, whether they recognize it or not. As the child stood before the rats his innocence disappeared, as if it had been sucked out of him completely. He observed the rats with careful eyes, making notes on their every movement and every decision.
His only thought for the creatures before him was how pathetic they looked. He knew that if he were to bring them food they would all begin to beg for it, scurrying around his feet, trying to trip him or make him drop just one scrap. If he gave them said food he would then be regarded as their savior in their simplistic minds.
The boy wondered how desperate they would get… he decided to test this. He retrieved a small blade from where it had been tucked away in his boot, revealing it, he brought it up to his hand—his own crimson ink trickled down into a pool before the vermin. While puzzled at first they quickly began to drink it.
They were dependent on him.
They needed him.
They are nothing without me.
That boy grew up, tearing the thorns from his eyes to reveal the true sins of this world and of humanity. The boy turned towards God and promised to help fulfill his wishes. That boy took on the life of the man you see before you, the one known as Fyodor Dostoevsky.
And so, I shed my own blood to allow those who wish to devote themselves to me drink it, to give them the permission to live under God’s will.
Death is a necessity to life.
I am a necessity to life.
— Fyodor Dostoevsky
Reflections on a “past” life.

So... i've been thinking of this, let me know what you think:
A/N: this is a Sirius x OC imagine
We're late for tha ball, Lily and Marlene are in my bedroom doing their make ups and hairs completely carefree, but i'm not. I want to go have fun, dance; plus, i don't wanna keep them waiting for too long.
"Reneé! Can you get me your blush pallete? Thanks hon' and relax we're not late!" Lily says looking at the clock on the wall. I look at it, it shows eight minutes to eight. IT'S EIGHT MINUTES TO BALL START!, I think. I start walking around the bedroom nervously, thinking that they are gonna be furious with us. Sirius gonna be furious with me!
Marlene notices my inquency walks over to me, puts her hands on my shoulders, looks me in the eye and says "If you want to go you can. I'll finish Miss Red over here" I jubilate with joy, i hug close to me and jump around when i look, from the corner of my eye to my spell book. And then it clicked! "Lily, Marlene! I know a way where i don't have to go alone and wait for you. I have a spell my mom taught me!"
I get my wand, open the book. I can see and feel the suspense in the air and in their faces. "Reneé, you do whatever you want, but please don't make my hair blonde!!" Lily says looking at Marlene.
"Hey! Thank you Lils! I really appreciate it!" Marlene says giving a push on Lily's shoulder. I point my wand at Lily's face and say "Pulchritudo dolor et dolor est pulchritudo"
And as if magic - scratch that, it was literally magic! - her face was beautifully presented with a soft blush, soft pink lips and freckles. She looked absolutely amazing!
"Reneé, what about the hair?"
"Rufus capillos ego mutare te" and her red hair transformed into a beautiful waterfall hairstyle.
"Lily, James is going to love it! Marlene yells.
"Oh, Reneé! I love you!" she says hugging me, I smile then look at the clock it's two minutes to eight. "Shit! We need to go!"
We run down the stairs, and Marlene says while laughing "You know I find it funny that i have literally no one waiting for me downstairs and you guys got me running in heels!" We laugh as Marlene slows down and lets us run to our dates. When we finally get to the bottom of the stairs, there he is Sirius Black in a beautiful black suit with his hair black hair very well combed back.
He smiled at me, his black eyes were shining with all of the lights. So beautiful, so angelic! So gorgeous that I stumbled and almost fell.
Sirius ran to help me. "You really fell for me didn't you?" he asks with a naughty smirk in his face. I look at him smiling, give him a kiss on the cheek.
"Hey" i say slurred completely amazed by him. I blushed.
"Hey" he says back with love on his eyes. "Just get a room already!" James yells at us with Lily next him laughing. "Maybe tonight" Sirius says to me making me blush as a little kid "Let's go my lady, by the way you look lovely in that dress" he teased, looking up and down at my very simple black dress. "You look lovely to." I whispered.
We went I the ball room, it looked absolutely hallucinatingly magical. They changed the whole big-stoned chamber to a white and gold ballroom with a big chandelier in the middle, a fireplace in the other end to have us warm, round tables where our names were written and a dance floor. We got in and the string quartet started playing. I looked exited at Lily, she mouthed WOW!
Sirius thought I didn't see it, but he smiled at the sight of my childish and exited interjections. And how i know it warmed his heart and soul. But what he doesn't know is that i know he was excited as well i could see it in the way he, later, asked me to dance, or, to be more precise, he draged me.
His right hand resting softly and gently on my back and his left hand holding mine. He made me twirl and fall and then get up and keep dancing. At one point I swear he and I were alone in the room and we were dancing.

Girl Boss
[Levi Schuler x Laura Day Masterlist]
Characters: Laura, Lily (daughter), Levi Schuler
Book: Mother of the Year [Levi x MC]
Word Count: approx 450
Prompts: @choicesmonthlychallenge : Unicorn, @choicesficwriterscreations “Girl Boss”
Summary: Taking place sometime after the series, Laura (MC) arrives home from work to find Lily hard at work.
A light chuckle slipped from Laura’s lips. Her head fell to the side in amusement as she approached their apartment. Between the lively, upbeat interplay of the violins seeping into the hallway, combined with the “Enter with Care—Scientist at work” sign posted on their door, she knew her daughter meant business. It wasn’t unusual for Mozart to be playing in the background while Lily worked, but Divertimento in D Major was her go-to when she was ready to conquer the world.
The symphony grew louder as she entered the living room. The sound encompassed her into its rhythmic play, thanks in part to the surround sound speakers Levi had installed when they moved into the larger apartment together.
She found Lily bent over the dining room table, books scattered beside her, while her little fingers flitted speedily in time with the allegro tempo. “Whatcha working on, Lil?”
“Shh—” Levi quickly pulled Laura away from the young girl in the lab coat. With a hushed voice, he explained, “She’s been in this sort-of-trance since she started. She tried explaining to me what she was working on, but the more that she talked, the faster and more excited she became.” He rubbed the back of his neck and shrugged. “Honestly, she lost me. I have no idea what she’s doing.”
Without looking away from her work, Lily reached for the white, unicorn mug with the word “Girl Boss” printed on it. She brought the cup to her lips, draining the remaining liquid from it. She slid it toward the corner of the table and returned to her work.
“Excuse me,” Levi whispered and moved to the kitchen.
Laura heard the sound of the glass coffee carafe leaving its base. “Please don’t tell me you’re giving her coffee. We tried that once, and that was a definite NO until she’s 30 or maybe 100, whichever comes second.”
Levi laughed, revealing the clear liquid inside the vessel. “Just water. Don’t worry, she explained the science behind water to me and the importance of staying hydrated when working on a challenging task. I thought this would just make her look more like a real scientist pouring over her research with coffee. Of course, she informed me she already was one.”
“That’s my Stargirl.” Laura smiled proudly watching Levi refill her mug with water.
Levi planted a kiss on the top of his future step-daughter’s head, then left her to her work. The two adults watched the gifted child construct something that neither had any idea what it was. They didn't need to understand it. They realized that with each passing day, they would understand less and less and that was okay. Lily was remarkable in every way that mattered. The world may not be ready for her, but Lily was ready for it. She was going to leave a mark on the future, one way or another.

Pieces Musician Snape would play (playlist):
Bach, Air on G String
Solemn, yet innocent and sweet—not characteristics usually associated with Snape. But this piece makes me imagine the cautious hope Snape feels on his better days, that maybe the war will end and things will turn out okay.
Kriesler-Vaneyev, Praeludium and Allegro in the style of Pugnani
I’m instantly brought visions of Malfoy Manner: cold, empty, and undoubtedly awe-inspiring. The descending melody captures a sense of loss. The octaves feel grand, but hollow. Like an ideology once regarded highly, and now disillusioned with. Snape is stuck with the choices he made, and the roles he has to play.
Chopin, Nocturne in C Minor
My favorite Nocturne by far. It’s simply so angsty and heart-wrenching and Snape. Just that first measure can cause me to sob. The ending-! Images of night, dark Hogwarts corridors, imminent danger and misunderstandings flash before my eyes. (and the color maroon)
Rachmaninoff, Prelude in C# minor
Rachmaninoff, Love’s Sorrow
Rachmaninoff—This man could the very reincarnation of Snape.
The prelude is another angst-fest, the music a narrative of Rachmaninoff's nightmare. It begins at a funeral. Church bells ring ominously, when a casket is spotted. Inexplicable dread fills him. He begins running towards the casket, tripping over his notes. When he opens it, he staggers back in shock. The music crashes. For it is himself he finds in it. It’s so dramatic if that doesn’t seem like the very type of thing Snape would dream of—
Love’s Sorrow to me references Snape’s relationship with Lily. There are the trill-y, happy parts, contrasted with the minor, more agitated parts. The chaotic notes near the end are akin to Snape’s death, and the simple return to the melody at the end is Snape’s reunion with Lily

Pas De Deux Ch. 8 - The Battle Scene
This is longer than usual and I promise the next chapter will have the good fluff. Enjoy! Words - 1,577. Read here or on ao3.
The sun rose, and though it usually woke Remus up, he hadn’t slept. Time had slowed and he swore it would come to a stop at some point.
But the day had finally arrived. Remus was finally going to see Sirius again.
Remus rolled out of bed to get ready for his morning classes. He started to pull the covers straight on his bed, but he saw a glint of white in the sheets. It was the card with Sirius’s signature on it. He blushed slightly, realizing he had slept with it, and placed it securely in a box on his bedside table. The dance attire drawer in his dresser was a mess and he struggled to find something, but settled on some lilac shorts and the shirt Sirius’s scent still lingered on.
He had an hour in between class and his date. He could make it home to change before he saw Sirius.
Double checking his bag and his clock, he rushed out the door, nervous butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
—-
Sirius had slept fitfully. His joints ached from the cold and though he usually could sleep through anything, he awoke to a pigeon singing outside his open window.
His day was off to a poor start. But as he stretched, he looked over to his nightstand. The picture of Remus was still there, and the fire it lighted in Sirius’s chest was all he needed to get him up for the day.
The clock read 9:30. From what Remus had told him the night prior, Remus was in class. What Sirius wouldn’t give to be able to watch him. Remus was good, but something told Sirius that Remus was even better than what he had seen. It probably had something to do with the fact that Sirius secretly wanted to see Remus in shorts.
From beside him on the table, Sirius’s phone buzzed. A notification from James.
“I had plans for today but they fell through. What are you doing this afternoon?” Sirius sighed. On one hand, he was looking forward to Remus; Specifically the things they could do alone. But James was basically his brother.
“I have a date today. We’re supposed to go to the park, but you can come.”
Two minutes later, his phone buzzed. And buzzed again. And kept buzzing. From where he was at the counter getting more coffee, Sirius groaned.
“A date??!!!”
“With who??”
“Is he cute? Or at least funny?? I’m not getting a brother-in-law who’s boring, Sirius.” Sirius’s heart swooped at the word “brother-in-law”. The thought of marrying Remus sent his heart speeding.
“Yes, he’s cute and funny. Do you remember the Nutcracker cast this year?” Both Sirius and James had gone that year, just on separate nights.
“Yeah, why?? Was he in it??”
“Do you remember the prince?” Sirius set his phone down and walked to put his dishes away. But he didn’t get far before he heard his phone ring. He laughed when he saw it was James, and answered.
“Sirius.” He sounded like he had just woken up by the rasp to his voice.
“James.”
“You. Are going on a date. With the man who played the prince.”
“Yes, James.”
“A man who dances with one of the most famous ballet companies?”
“His name is Remus.” Sirius felt like he was in a dream. It finally hit him that he was dating one of the best ballet dancers in the country.
“How long have you been dating?” James asked, and Sirius could tell he really wanted to know.
“I asked him out after the show which was… a week ago? Well, when I say it like that it feels like not that long ago.”
James was quiet on the other side, and Sirius realized he was waiting for him to keep talking.
“It feels like I’ve known him for so long, James. Like we talk and it’s so natural. I want to spend every waking hour with him. I want to wake up to him and fall asleep next to him and I want to make him breakfast and take him on walks and learn everything about him. And I’m worried if I tell him I’ll scare him away. It’s been a week and I feel like this. James, I have no idea what to do.”
James pulls in a breath over the line.
“Christmas is coming up, yeah? You’ll be away from each other for, what, a week? You’ll know by then and I’m sure he will too.” Sirius knew he was right, and relaxed back into his chair.
“You’re right.”
“‘Course I am.” Sirius’s scoff made James laugh.
“I love you, Sirius.”
“I love you too, James.”
“Oh, and Sirius?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m coming to meet this boy today.”
“Ok, James. Three o’clock.”
“I’ll be there.”
Sirius put the phone down and sank back in his chair. The smile on his face hurt. It was ten o’clock and Sirius decided to take a shower.
He knew that half of his shower time would involve staring at the hickey on his neck, but he still headed for the bathroom.
The hot water soothed his joints and warmed his core. He pulled the tangles out of his long hair, scrubbed his skin pink. Closing his eyes, he saw Remus.
Remus, spread out and glowing, beneath his hands.
Fifteen minutes later, Sirius stepped out of the shower, grateful nobody heard him cry out Remus’s name as he came.
—-
From the window just next to him at the wall barre, Remus watched the sun rise in the sky. Just three more hours, and one of those hours was lunch. Then he’d see Sirius again.
As the class went on, Remus found it harder to pay attention to the teacher. It didn’t help that the teacher’s voice could put anyone to sleep.
The clock on the wall read 11:55. Grande allegro to finish (which was his favorite). The teacher dismissed them and Remus walked over to thank Lily, the pianist.
He rested his elbows on the piano and watched her pack her stuff. She looked over her shoulder, pushing her long red hair out of her face, and smiled.
“Anything planned for after dance?” She asked.
“I’ve got a date, actually,” Remus said, groaning inwardly at drawing attention to himself. Lily stood up and looked at him.
“What?”
“You’ve got a date?”
“Yeah.”
“How long have you known this man?” Remus shrunk a little under her frighteningly maternal gaze.
“Um. A week? Which doesn’t sound like long, but-“ He sighed, “I really like him.”
“That’s good, Remus,” Lily said sweetly.
“Enough about me. If I don’t eat in the next ten minutes I am going to get snappy.” Lily laughed.
“I’m serious.”
“Of course you are, Remus.” They linked arms and walked out of the studio.
Twenty minutes later, the threat of Remus getting snappy was gone. He sat across from Lily at a small table overlooking the city. They ate in silence until Remus’s phone buzzed in his pocket. A message from Sirius.
“So one of my friends decided he’s coming with us to the park. I’m so sorry but I’ll get rid of him after and make it up to you.”
Remus blushed dark red.
“Remus? Are you okay?”
“How do you feel about coming to the park with me today?”
—-
Sirius was antsy. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t sit for longer than five minutes. His excuses to get up and walk around became more and more random after every minute.
It was 1:45 and he was sure he’d die.
That was when he had an idea.
—-
When the teacher dismissed them from their final class, Remus all but ran to his stuff. After nearly losing his balance when putting his pants on, he ran down the ten flights of stairs and burst out onto the sidewalk. He turned to walk home but he heard a familiar voice call his name and he blushed out of embarrassment.
“What are you doing here, Sirius?” He asked as the man appeared next to him.
“Should I not be?” Sirius sounded uncertain.
“I’m glad you’re here, don’t get me wrong.” Remus replied, lifting his chin to look at Sirius. “I just kind of look like this.” He gestured to his mismatched clothes.
“Well, can I walk you home?”
“Of course.”
Remus’s heart gave a weak flutter as their fingers intertwined. After waiting, they were finally back together.
They got back to Remus’s apartment, which was cold. Without even going into his bedroom, he peeled off his sweatpants and the heavy sweatshirt he had on. Using his t-shirt, he wiped some of the sweat off his face.
“So that’s what you wear.”
Remus froze and looked down. In the moment, he had forgotten that he had stripped down to skin tight shorts and Sirius’s shirt. In front of Sirius.
They locked eye contact for a second, before Sirius’s grey eyes tracked slowly down Remus’s body.
Two days of waiting burst out of Remus and he surged forward, pushing Sirius backwards over the couch arm and landing on top of him.
“You don’t mind me wearing your shirt, do you?” Remus asked, hands on either side of Sirius’s head.
“That’s your shirt.”
“It smells like you.”
“Are you going to kiss me or not?” Sirius asked, arching an eyebrow playfully. Remus laughed and did what Sirius had asked.

(cw: blackface, racism, orientalism)
dance magazine article - article author: dana nichols
“On Instagram this week, Misty Copeland reposted a picture of two Russian ballerinas covered head to toe in black, exposing the Bolshoi's practice of using black face in the classical ballet La Bayadère.
The post has already received over 60,000 likes and 2,000 comments, starting a long overdue conversation.
Comments have been pouring in from every angle imaginable: from history lessons on blackface, to people outside of the ballet world expressing disbelief that this happens in 2019, to castigations of Copeland for exposing these young girls to the line of fire for what is ultimately the Bolshoi's costuming choice, to the accusations that the girls—no matter their cultural competence—should have known better.
I am a black dancer, and in 2003, when I was 11 years old, I was dressed up in blackface to perform in the Mariinsky Ballet's production of La Bayadère.
I fell in love with ballet at an early age. I remember watching my cousin's ballet class transfixed by the effortlessness of a grand allegro combination.
This was my first exposure: seeing the art form capture and elevate the beauty of my cousin's black body.
I spent the next 12 years studying classical Russian ballet at the Yuri Grigoriev School of Ballet in Los Angeles.
Because our teacher refused to speak English, I grew accustomed to having a feel for what was being said, but at the same time, no idea. I really learned ballet, abstracted from the context of American history and culture.
All importance was placed on movement quality and the technique. The wall that separated ballet from the real world in my mind began to crumble when I was selected to be a child extra in the Mariinsky's performance of La Bayadère.
When ballet companies tour, they can't bring minors with them, so they find young dancers locally to fill roles in their ballets. When the Mariinsky came to Los Angeles, they tapped our studio to participate.
As students secluded in the world of Russian ballet, the chance to dance in La Bayadère was a dream came true.
We would be feet away from superstars like Diana Vishneva, watching from backstage as they danced under the stage lights and amidst the most intricate sets and costumes our hearts could imagine!
Somewhere deep in the Hollywood complex of the Kodak Theatre, we learned an angular dance in second position.
We hopped around with flexed feet, waived our arms and periodically folded into kowtows. In hindsight, it's obvious that we were performing caricatures of the "Orient." I don't even think it occurred to me that La Bayadère was set in South Asia because everyone was white—until dress rehearsal. Our preparations were overseen by women designated to coordinate the child extras and interpret for us.
Our parents were not allowed backstage. They fitted us in dark unitards with hoods to cover everything except our faces. Later, the makeup artist instructed us on how to apply our makeup. She handed each of us a palette of dark brown grease paint, pausing to do a double take after she handed me mine. It wasn't until I received all of the pieces of my costume—a mahogany colored bodysuit, dark brown face paint and bright red lipstick—that I discovered I was to wear blackface.
I must have been the only dark-skinned person to have been in a Mariinsky production. The women in charge weren't sure what to do with me. I saw the white dancers around me covering themselves in the brown paint and distinctly remember being at a loss for words because it was so bizarre. It was especially the red lipstick traced around the mouth that disturbed me. I remember looking down at the paints and trying to figure out what they had to do with me. All I could manage to say was, "Do I need this?"
I became that thing in the room that no one had ever had to confront. Our chaperones exchanged glances and finally responded with an uncomfortable "Yes." One woman laughed nervously as she indicated that I still had to wear the makeup because my brown skin was many shades lighter than the color of the bodysuit and the paint selected to cover our skin.
Of course, it was quickly forgotten in a production of this magnitude involving hundreds of people. During dress rehearsal, I found out that we were not the only characters that had been darkened. Many had on light brown paint on their arms and faces. The experience was jarring, but I compartmentalized it a way even later that night as I scrubbed my face raw trying to get the paint off.
Only years later did it dawn on me that I had played a primitive Indian caricature. I don't think any of us really understood. Even as a black girl who grew up in a segregated Los Angeles, with some cultural awareness, I didn't do much better than the girls in Copeland's post. I had even seen the movie Bamboozled, but my real racial awakening and then subsequent outrage, began much later, around age 15 after reading Assata. Until then, I lived in ignorance, accepting the discomforts in exchange for access to the art form I loved.
Around the age of 17, by the time my dance peers were beginning to commit to conservatory programs and full-time pre-professional tracks in ballet, I was fully immersed in issues of diversity and social justice. Ballet had my heart, but by then I knew that the magic couldn't cover up its ugly contortions of body, beauty and culture.
I watched as dancers of all kinds were silenced and diminished. In my 20s I found refuge in the world of black modern dance, a place where many fallen ballerinas can be found.
I understand Copeland's frustrations. This ballet, and many others, are set in mythical ballet worlds, where people of color are dehumanized into caricatures for white enjoyment, to be seen, made to dance, but not heard.
It could not be more ridiculous to have a young black girl (or anyone) wear blackface to depict dark South Asians, as they were imagined by nineteenth-century French, Russian and Georgian choreographers.
Yet the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky still use blackface in their productions today.
Even without the black and brown face in La Bayadère, the setting, the characters, their Indian "inspired" garb and much of the music and movement are prime examples of orientalism.
So many classic works of art, literature and performance are tainted by the attitudes of the era in which they were born—dance is particularly evocative as it is real-time reenactment.
So do we kiss the off-color ballets goodbye—including America's favorite, The Nutcracker? Or do we just modernize them, as many have already begun to do?
Truth be told, La Bayadère is one of my favorite ballets. The Shades act embodies the spirit of ballet.
In my opinion, the best part of ballet is its otherworldly qualities—the interpretations of spirits and reveries, the manifestations of creatures, swans, etc.
The more theatrical village and party scenes that are full of colorful caricatures serve as a contrast to make the ethereal that much more powerful, but they don't need to be offensive to accomplish that.
Nor does ballet need to exclude people of color in order to achieve the ethereal. In 2019, there is no need for a perfectly uniform lily-white corps de ballet.
We need new mythical worlds, new characters and stories—made of the imaginations of different kinds of people. Ballet is the same as any other field with institutional racism.
We can express outrage at the players: those two Russian girls, the makeup artists, the costume designer, or even me and any other complicit party.
But as Copeland's original caption guided us to do, we must be critical of the whole system, too. Petipa had a good run. Thank goodness Copeland is using her platform to begin the dismantling process.””
