What laptop manufacturers think people want:

What people actually want:

Seriously!
Like, what happened to 4:3? Websites and word processors work with VERTICAL SCROLLING. That means we want more VERTICAL SPACE.
What happened to buttons on the trackpad? The smooth square is bullshit. Bring back buttons. Also there should be a scroll wheel beside the trackpad.
Why are laptops so thin nowadays? Where's the sturdiness? Where's the space to put things?
What happened to the io? I WANT MORE USB. I should not have to buy an adapter to have enough USB ports.
Disc drives! SD card readers! Why did they leave?? Put them back.
And easily removable batteries!! That should be common again!! If the battery stops carrying enough charge, anyone should be able to replace it easily.
Also, like, why are laptop speakers consistently so ass? Make them good!
Keyboards should have more buttons! Un-merge the function keys and the, like, volume and brightness control keys. More buttons more better.
Why is there usually only a power button? Put a sleep button next to it!!
#please i'm begging#i want a laptop that can do things like actually#I don't care about laptops being thin and pretty. give me HEFT and MORE FEATURES.#ignore the wonky angles I'm 1) not a visual artist and 2) had the hubris to draw in pen#computers#computer#tech#technology#linux

I feel like Linuxposting. Let's Linuxpost.
Aka. Lemme just shill for Linux Mint for like a solid paragraphs because I need to scream.
I use Windows for uni (have to use Power BI Desktop for one class), but at the start of the semester, my Monday class teacher would ask us "do you use Windows or are you happy?"
This was a little jab since he's a Mac user. At the time I had my Ubuntu dualboot system. Picked it since I had worked with it before, wasn't the Greatest fan (it would behave weirdly and just close programs due to "memory usage" when I Know it shouldn't be acting like that)
Thing is, my Linux partition is tiny. Attempts at shrinking my Windows were. Not good. Eventually I accidentally broke my Ubuntu install by trying to remove packages I shouldn't.
Reinstalled it, realized it didn't spark joy. Found Linux Mint, switched over.
If I could, I'd nuke my Windows install. It's Just That Nice.
I can customize the FUCK out of it. System font. Icons. Made up filetypes just because. Desklets. Applets.
Felt like "my system" instead of "the system I own".
Originally had a Linux system purely to write fic. LibreOffice felt a lot more freeing compared to Word. Hell, I realized I refused to swear on my fics because it felt like I was being judged. Most of my AO3 fics (barring the very first one) were written in LibreOffice.
Only issue I had was the Burn my Windows extension (and another that made the windows all wobbly) won't make Cinnamon launch properly. Wonder why.
No biggie if y'all have to use Windows as well for X and Y reasons, but whenever I see the GRUB menu, I just ask myself: "am I gonna use Windows, or am I gonna be happy?"
#my stuff#linux#linux mint#i wish i had a safer way to test other stuff i do on windows only like steam games#because my laptop's the strongest in the house#also i need a linuxposting tag hold on#tehc pingu#yes.

Speaking of farming I wanted to share this story from a One Laptop Per Child guy
Using the mesh network to establish smallholder price negotiations! In 2006! Imagine if this had been deployed, although I guess you Might Get Killed For Unionizing. Really emphasizes how much actual farming is a ruthless optimization problem.
Nowadays there's a bunch of apps for selling crops like this. I haven't looked into them deeply but they do seem to have slightly improved some smallholder incomes, although what you see in other cases is farming cooperatives like are popular in speciality coffee.

the fact that ChromeOS Guys™ exist should be unsurprising but it's still so fucked up. what do you mean 'vt2 gives you all the capability of linux' 'desktop linux is so unstable and bad and sucks so much & Google made it into a functional OS' 'REAL DEVS don't need powerful laptops and are dependent on cloud services' ??????? how are you real.
#on theme#mhwd#linuxposting#vt2 + chromebrew is not!! identical to a real linux system. also it's a chromebook lmao you have to jailbreak it to change bios settings#'instability' debian powers the internet lol#and of course#i support not getting a powerful laptop if you dont need it but being dependent on cloud services is 🚫🚫👎👎👎👎#buy some old used thinkpad like a real linuxhead

hellooo very cool person I am just now getting into the atla fandom and I know Nothing other than your fics are very cool and great and I was wondering if you have any recs (or links to posts with recs!!) bc I trust your judgment LOL
I hope this is ok to ask!! also I will add that I am not that picky but I will add that I am very much a longfic enjoyer so🫶🫶
My friend, may I open up to you the broad world of clicking an AO3 user's bookmarks. <3
AKA: literally click any ao3 username, "bookmarks" should appear towards the top of the resulting page. You can then voyage into the additionally wonderful waters of filtering by length, "recommended", fandom, etc.
Also: if the fic you like is in collections, try checking them out, especially if the title appeals to you. Can be a great way to find essentially a fic playlist.
Anyway all hail ao3's designers they done good work
#Oh for an internet designed purely by people for people#Not by people who want money for people who are about to have less money#AO3 you are a light onto my days#In other but thematically related news I'm researching the switch to Linux#Because new laptop came with Windows 11 and if I need to learn command line edits to get this functional#(read: not actively hostile)#I might as well finally make the switch to the computer system not designed to maximize my suffering#Reading their list of recommended programs was hilarious because I literally use all of them instead of the Windows ones already#Go go free and open programs go#ao3

watching microsoft shoot themselves in the foot this year with copilot and the windows 10 EOL is amazing.
the year of the linux desktop will come not at the hands of some crazy user-friendly distro, but by microsoft becoming so unbearable that people switch out of frustration.
#*FAX MACHINE NOISES*#linuxposting#linux#microsoft's bullshit has gotten so much worse man#i was setting up a new surface last week and they've started installing two different versions of copilot (like w/ teams)#this surface had. i shit you not. 5 versions of office. 3 versions of teams. 2 versions of copilot#my boss and i have agreed we're going back to buying dell laptops bc the surfaces are a fucking nightmare

Today I have an merge conflict plus a deploy error in my link in bio app which is deployed in Fly io. Not big deal, just came out that was auth error in deployment, but about the merge conflict was a little bit more than a few lines.
