The set of Wednesday buzzed with the usual hum of activity as cameras rolled and crew members scurried around. I, Y/N, had grown accustomed to the frenetic energy that accompanied a day on set. However, today was different. Jenna Ortega and I had another love scene to film, and despite our professional demeanor, there was a palpable tension between us. It wasn't the sort of tension that adds spice to a performance; it was more like an icy chill that made every interaction feel awkward.

Honestly honestly the most romantic moment of the entire series is when Neil talks about how he'd never gotten to travel for fun before and the Foxes are planning to take him to the mountains, and Kevin starts to protest that they can't go on vacation but stops because Andrew is holding a knife on him 😭🥺😩 like I don't know that's just just a sweet little moment to me, Andrew threatening Kevin if he takes this little chance for happiness from Neil

Uhhhh literally Andrew “I-don’t-care” Minyard is the most romantic of ALL the foxes. My line of work revolves around intimacy and from all my training and studying let me tell you that man is a master at his craft.

Andrew’s touch is beautiful and sacred; this thing he does not take easily, or give out kindly whatsoever. Yet with Neil it’s as if he can’t stop himself. We see it in how gently he tapes the garbage bags around Neil’s injuries, wordlessly, without being asked. THAT’S intimacy. How he holds his neck to inspect his eyes when he removes his contacts, how he hands Neil cigarettes without a request, how he doesn’t say a word while touching Kevin with the point of a blade because Neil deserves a fucking break. Sure, by technicalities, the shower scene from TKM is intimate by definition, but really it’s in the kiss he ghosts across Neil’s hip, in how he pats dry his broken skin afterwards. How can you look at him wordlessly dropping keys into Neil’s palms, and think, yeah there’s no way Andrew could be romantic. Is he soft, is he gentle, as a person? No. But his minuscule actions are, his unmentioned gestures are. You just have to look and find them.

TKM just has some of the most subtly beautiful examples of a different flavour of love and intimacy that is so unusual and heartwarming it’s insane. That shower scene drives me crazy when I think about how caring Andrew is in it. He came in with the tape and bags on his own volition, knowing Neil needed a shower and couldn’t do it unattended. How he didn’t take away Neil’s autonomy by assuming he couldn’t undress himself, instead waiting until he paused and couldn’t go any further before he started to help. How he drapes the blanket over Neil’s shoulders, again giving Neil a chance to struggle before wrapping it around him. They practically don’t speak to each other really in that chapter at all apart from a bit of flirting in the shower. Because they don’t need to, because Andrew knows how to love, how to be caring, how to wrap up the boy he almost lost in bubble wrap because if he loses him again, it won’t be pretty. He washes Neil’s hair! He covers his wounds! He treats him gently when that is possibly the last word that could ever be used to describe Andrew. I feel like that scene was in part of course him just looking after Neil who can use approximately two square inches of his entire body, but in another part proving how serious he is about Neil. Everything changes between the two of them then, suddenly their actions more relaxed than hungry, not yet a given but instead now just a want.

I don’t know. I can’t help but see so much intimacy and romance in subtleties and things you’d barely even notice, regardless of the people/the characters and their circumstances. I wouldn’t use the word sweet to describe Andrew at all, but the things he does for Neil? The way that he loves Neil? The absolutely fucking sweetest.

Y/N, glowing with the beauty of impending motherhood, seemed to be spending every waking moment with Hyacinth and Gregory. Benedict missed her company, the intimate moments they shared, and the way her laughter used to be directed solely at him.

Y/N’s nails dug into his shoulders, her body responding to his every touch, every thrust. The rhythm between them built steadily, a dance of love and desire. The flickering flames of the fireplace mirrored the passion that consumed them, casting a golden glow over their entwined bodies.

Inevitable been thinking about how that one anon viewed Laios as a monsterfucker, and I think it made me realize the source of that confusion:

I think many monsterfuckers, and also many (dare I say most) monster devourers like Laios, both derive their desire from the same source: a latent wish for apoteratosis, the wish to become a monster.

Linguistic side note: apotheosis, becoming a god, breaks down to apo- (towards the end point), theo (god), -osis (turn noun into verb), so I swapped in the root for monster, hence apo- terato -osis. Side note over.

Monster devourers are a rather rare archetype in (mainstream) fiction, but they do exist. Those who seek to mimic or emulate the monster's power, those who find them endlessly fascinating and study them well past the point of obsession, those who wish to show their dominance over the monster by proving that they can kill and eat it... and I think Laios is the first I've seen who takes the title quite so literally, where his obsession goes straight to monsters-as-food.

Monsterfuckers, meanwhile wish to become close to the monster in a non destructive way (or at least a typically less destructive one, usually the only casualties are furniture and few bandages are needed, but I'll acknowledge that exceptions definitely exist). They wish to bond with it, to connect to it through lust or intimacy, to be able to stand at its side. They wish, on some level, to join it. Side note, I'm not saying this is true of all teratophiles, some are just kinky and driven by the thought of positive physical pleasure, or who find the personality of a given monster appealing, but I do think the apoteratotic desire is an underlying driver for many, I'd guess well more than half, it's just a subtle enough thing that I don't think most are consciously aware of it.

There's also a third point to the secret apoteratosis triangle that might surprise you: the monster slayer. Sure many, even most, slayers are driven by something like disgust or xenophobia or even rationality, but a significant minority land in the "if you can't join 'em, beat 'em" a.k.a. "I can't be you, so I'll destroy you" camp.

And these three reactions are, I notice, the three most common reactions that people have to one thing: the unattainable desire. The sentence begins "I cannot have it..." and these three camps end it different ways.

The teratophages say "so I shall dominate it." They seek what power they can grasp so they can have some modicum of control, so they can try to "have" it anyway. The kaiju corpse scavengers in Pacific Rim including refined and suave mob boss types just smacks of this attitude.

The teratophiles say "so I'll get as close as I can." There's a werewolf romance book where they're considering trying to turn the girlfriend, though they have no idea if she'll survive it (boyfriend was turned by accident then abandoned, so he's clueless, and they haven't found any others to teach them), and she says that she's fine remaining human, because she shares the power through him. "I have it, because you have it." The façade eventually breaks and in a vulnerable moment she confesses that she'd be willing to risk even a likely death to try to be turned. When they get in contact with an elder who can turn her safely she doesn't even wait a week.

The teratophobes write that whole sentence as "if I can't have it, then no one can." I'm sure everyone has seen enough examples of this behavior to understand that it's just a kind of love turned corrupt.

I'm not the first to notice the underlying apoteratotic urge: the aforementioned werewolf story, indeed many werewolf and vampire stories romanticize the transformation of a human into a monster. Back to Dungeon Meshi, author Ryōko Kui is fully aware of it with how Laios's underlying desire is eventually brought out of the subtext and explicitly named as his dysphoria with humanity, and his wishing that he could be a monster. For Laios that desire skipped right past the socially unacceptable monsterfucking, explicitly a form of bestiality in that world, to the socially acceptable devouring, though tempered by his respect and admiration of monsters into a desire for symbiosis with them. He cannot become one in truth (or so he thought when younger) but he could become part of their food web. It's as close as he thought he could get. Of course, that's the Watsonian explanation; the Doylist explanation is that Ryōko Kui wanted to subvert expectations, and also wanted to explore this angle of it.

So, all taken together, I think people read Laios as monsterfucker coded simply because teratophiles, teratophages, and teratophobes all share the same root motivation: apoteratosis. Thus, all three branches are coded very similarly.

It's similar to something I've seen in Batman fandom: some fans project romantic love between various members of the Batfamily, which is both wildly against canon and thoroughly hated by some other branches of fandom. But it is understandable, since familial love and romantic love both come from the same root, love of another. If someone doesn't recognize the simultaneous similarities and distinctions, it's all to easy to conflate them. If you don't actually understand the distinction, then the signs of affection between siblings might look the same as the signs of affection between lovers. Likewise, if you don't understand the distinction, the urge of the monster devourers (or ecologists) might look the same as the urge of the monster fucker.

I've sat on this for near a month, partially because of my repeated absences, partially because I wanted to honor it with an equally in-depth response. But 24 days later I've still got nothing, while I can't speak for that particular person I think in general you hit the nail right on the head for the base roots. I got no notes. Even with Laios...like all I can add is how supplemental materials actually confirm he did want to be a monster researcher but found books too dry, the only one who seemed to really *get* monsters was shunned. and how wild he goes when talking with an actual werewolf, "The existence I thought unobtainable is now right in front of me".

There is a hell of a lot to say about mirrors. Aside from Colin and Penelope's perfect love story, I love how their romance is completely intertwined with identity.

Mirrors are everywhere this season. Penelope's staring at herself with Genevieve behind her, outwardly prioritizing her career over love. And her transformation is only skin deep and smartly subverted at the ball.

Varley is encouraging Penelope's new look, saying, "the looking glass does not lie." Such a sweet thing to say! But she says it during the Whistledown voice over. So the looking glass doesn't lie, but Penelope sure does. And at the end of the episode, after that captivating gossip scene at the Osterley Ball, Penelope simply reflects what the rest of the ton is saying in Whistledown.

Colin's brief reflection in the mirror behind Penelope at Stowell House highlights how he is never far from her thoughts.

Love the little moment Colin has with Violet where she comes to see him in the study, and he leans into the light when she brings up friendship and love, and you see his reflection behind her. The mirror play in the Fuller Library was so great. The thin persona Colin is projecting to the toxic lord squad is so not reflective of who is actually in his heart. And I really love Penelope's resigned little vanity mirror shot, readying herself for Debling's proposal and convincing herself she has no need for love.

The mirror intimacy scene is the sexiest, rawest, most revealing, most tender love scene I've ever seen. I personally think that the vulnerability of the mirror scene alone makes this season the most intimate it's ever been. I love that it starts with the mirror. I love that the mirror was all over in promos and was the third character in the teaser trailer. I love that the song that plays is "p.o.v."

And then we have the parallel of Genevieve behind Penelope in front of the mirror once more, this time with Penelope surrendering her career for love.

What makes the mirror intimacy scene so well-written and angsty is Colin believing that they were completely baring themselves to one another in that moment, mind, body, and soul. And while Penelope had found no other moment with him more special, she was still holding back parts of herself. And that is why it is so heartbreaking when Colin tells her the reason they'll still marry is because they were intimate. He's struggling to get the words out, as he reflects on their time together. He feels betrayed. He was honest with her inside and out, and she wasn't. And once again, Genevieve is an incredible support when she reminds Penelope that true love comes from loving each other, and themselves, fully.

When we see Colin battling with himself after admitting defeat to Penelope's team, there is a brief shot of him in the mirror as he openly lusts after his wife, frozen in conflict. And Penelope's reflection is shown as she's made the firm decision to unmask Whistledown, leading to the public reveal of her identity.

These characters are not just stepping into the light this season, but they're also forced to confront their own reflections. And as they examine all aspects of themselves, even the parts they used to hide from, they can't help but fall that much more deeply in love with each other. It really is such a beautiful message!

• He's actually a really good cook. He rarely cooks for himself though, opting for snacks, fruit and takeout, but during his studies with Subodhi and during the journey he got really interested in the process. So sometimes he treats his monkeys with something tasty.

• /tw for alcoholism/ Wukong has an alcohol problem: he can't stop until he physically has to. Once he starts drinking for real he won't stop until he's passing out. It's an old habit of his, that started rather innocent, but with his growing self doubt it became a coping mechanism. But! He would never allow himself to drink or be drunk in front of MK.

/Additional hc, this habit started with Brotherhood, when Wukong (the smallest of the group) continuesly tried to outdrink others/

• Despite his strong dislike for himself bc of his mistakes, he absolutely loves being a demon monkey. And he's ecstatic that now he gets to teach MK demon monkey things.

• /my personal favourite hc/ He's unreasonably scared of butterflies. When he was young he used to freak out to the point of literal panic attacks. In the present he just freezes with anxiety and wait for it to fly away. He himself can't rationalize his fear.

• He didn't grow up on FFM. His careful and forceful habits are the product of him fighting for his life from a very young age. He traveled a lot before he found FFM and decided to stay bc there are a lot of food and it's relatively safe. That's when he met Wukong

• Continuing the previous hc: he doesn't like fruit on FFM much. Most of his life he had to fight for his food, and it was way easier to find things like meat, vegetables and leaves, than actually tasty fruit, so the ones growing on FFM are just too sweet for him. He eats them as a treat, but he can't stomach the idea of fruit being his only food option.

“You just look so gorgeous like this, is all,” he whispers down at you, “You always look the best in the mornings, and I never want to let you out of this damn bed.” You giggle up at him in response, caressing his cheek and bringing him down to claim his lips over yours. 

You mouth at him, rolling his scarred flesh between your lips as he joins in the slow and deliberate movements. Unhurried, relaxed and passionate are the lips that meet yours, the texture of his Glasgow smile feeling tingly against your skin. Heat’s kisses are always warm and inviting as he balances out passion and neediness for slow and sultry romance. 

Humming into his lips, he draws his hands down to your hips and slowly massages your flesh beneath his palms. He moans as you slowly caress his thigh with your calf, smiling against your lips as he deepens the embrace. 

Finally pulling apart from his kiss, you dart your eyes between his as you look for a deeper reason for his passion this particular morning. His gray orbs hold a nervousness behind his loving gaze. Smiling with a soft sigh, you shake your head at him in a gentle scolding.

“You want to cancel the brunch, don’t you?” you hum up at him, his shock prompting his eyes to widen and lips to part, “Is that why you’re being sweet?” A small gasped laugh fled from his lips as he softly nodded in confirmation. 

“Oh, honey,” you coo up at him, tucking one of his locks behind his ear, “They’re going to love you, don’t worry.” He rolls his eyes at you and nuzzles his forehead into your neck, pressing a sweet kiss to your clavicle. You sigh as he massages your waist, his tongue darting out and swirling your pulse beneath his lips. 

“H-Heat, stop it,” you giggle at him, prompting him to smile against your skin and continue playfully biting and sucking on your skin. You softly keen out a small mewl, which prompts him to continue his possessive ministrations. Bruising your skin lightly with his kisses, you gather his hair at the nape of his neck. He hums against you, sending shockwaves of vibrations against your flesh as he presses more feverish kisses against you.

“Heat, we’ve gotta get up,” you whine at him, his lips getting warmer the longer he presses his kiss against you. The trail of warm fire ignites a passion in the pit of your stomach the longer he presses kisses into your skin. 

“Mmhm,” he hums, lips parting and heating your pulse with his molten lips. You arch your back up to him as he pins your hips against the mattress with his broad hands. You tap his back to playfully scold him, prompting him to chuckle against your skin and halt his soft attack on your skin. He rounded his eyes and made himself out to be more innocent and pure. 

“You really don’t want to meet them, do you?” you pout at him, looking at his sullen expression and nudging his nose with your own. 

“They’ll think I’m a wet noodle, I’m sure,” he huffs, his scarred lips pouting down at you and pressing a chaste kiss on the top of your nose, “Some mongrel pup you took out of the rain, all soaking wet and shivering from the cold.” You laugh at him and tap his bicep while scooching out from beneath him. 

“And look at you,” he crawls over to the edge of the bed, leaning on his elbows and resting on his stomach, “Perfection incarnate.” You giggle and shake your head at him while gathering your chosen clothes for the day. 

“I promise,” you gaze at him over your shoulder and bat your eyelashes at him, “The moment you meet them, you’ll have all these worries and doubts cast aside.” He sighs, rolling onto his back and rubbing the bridge of his nose with his thumb and index finger. His hair rolls off the mattress and hangs over the side like waterfalls dropping from a picturesque clifface, prompting you to halt your dressing and stoop down to his height. 

“Even if they don’t love you,” you press your lips to his forehead and give him a soft kiss, “Rest assured in the knowledge that I do. Completely.” As you made to pull away, he hooked his arm over your neck and drew your lips to his. Angling his chin to the side, his lips and tongue hungrily consumed the squeak you made at the initial contact.

Releasing your neck, he gazed his sunken eyes into your own and searched for the lie lingering beneath the surface. Only pure honesty and love were found in your half-lidded eyes as you gazed longingly down at him. 

“Fine,” he groaned with a click of his tongue and a roll of his eyes, “Only because I love you.” You hum in glee down at his pouting lips and press yours against him one last time. 

“I knew you’d see it my way,” you chirp happily down at him. Gathering the remainder of your clothes, you place them over your body under the watchful eyes of your lover taking in your every move and motion with awe. 

At the brunch, Heat had never felt more out of place amongst your friends gathered. While none of them paid him any hostility or mind, he couldn’t help but feel like an outsider looking in on the conversations spreading like wildfire between you all. Conversations he felt so out of depth with at the rapid topic changes, soft giggles, and hands swapping empty glasses for full ones of bubbly wines and fizzed juices. 

Looking across the table, he made contact with another partner who seemed equally out of depths as he was. The partner mouthed at him: “First time?” with an arched brow, to which Heat gave a tight-lipped nod in response. Raising their beverage, they gave a soft cheers with their glass to which Heat reciprocated. Both draining the contents dry in sync, they both laughed softly together as they signaled for another. 

Gazing at him out of the corner of your eye and noticing he began to relax into the space, you place your hand gently on his thigh that he immediately covered with his own. Raising your hand up to his lips, he pressed a kiss to your knuckles while gazing longingly at you. You turned to face him, tilting your head to the side and offering him a coy smile. 

“Oh, I love you,” you whisper to him, prompting him to mirror your smile with a smirk of his own. 

“I know,” he uttered softly, pressing another kiss to your palm and leaning in closer to you, “Which is why you’re going to come for drinks tomorrow to meet my crew.” You smile and press your hand to his cheek, drawing him closer to you and claiming his lips in a soft kiss. He hummed against your lips, pulling away to gaze deeply into your eyes. 

“Are you sure?” you widen your eyes and gaze up at him with a rounded innocence in your expression. He hummed at you, nodding softly and pressing his forehead against your own.

“Absolutely,” Heat tucked a stray hair behind your ear and leaned into the soft embrace you were sharing together, “They’ll love you.”
