#Luffy: I’m in love with you :)

there is something unique and deeply special about monkey d luffy as a protagonist. he’s overwhelmingly ADORED by the fandom. he’s consistently the most or at least top 3 most popular characters in the whole series. peoples takes about him are gushingly positive. and that’s… really uncommon.

a LOT of fandoms i’ve witnessed or been in have a tendency to favor characters other than the main character. especially in anime. the main characters are often written as a blank slate for readers/watchers to project onto, but that makes them not as interesting and so they don’t get the fan attention.

but luffy is so far from that. and he’s ALWAYS been this way. we love him so much. he’s the heart of the story and the heart of the fandom in every single way. and i think that speaks to how well-written he is as a character. he’s fun and charming and complex and interesting and he makes us laugh and cry and cheer and hope and love. he’s able to inspire so much joy in people, both in his world but also in this one. and i think that’s really special. i feel so grateful to have found this story that means so much to me, and i’m so grateful that luffy exists.

Remember when Toei reanimated Luffy and Zoro’s meeting for a flashback right before the peak of Zoro vs King, and in it they made the stylistic choice to gradually make the world brighter and brighter as Zoro makes his vow, in one long and beautiful shot framed to show the way Luffy’s perfectly reflected in Zoro’s eyes, to show that it’s him changing Zoro’s entire world and becoming the center of it. Remember that.

here’s the thing. about zolu. puts myhand on your shoulder Here’s the thing. luffy? aromantic. zero interest in romance. zoro? gay. very low interest in romance. has two braincells and they’re both devoted to thinking about swords. they are not dating. it is not romantic. it’s not sexual either because luffy, much like his views on romance, could not give less of a shit about sex. maybe if they both feel up to it at the same time, but that’s rare and when it does happen it’s more of a physicality and, to a lesser extent, affection thing than anything else. occasionally it’s a “hey wouldn’t it be weird/funny/fucked up if we [insert some david cronenberg-type shit]” thing and the other one goes “haha yeah do you wanna try.” but i digress.

however. HOWEVER. they Have A Thing. what that Thing entails is a mystery. luffy is both incredibly straightforward and frustratingly cryptic whenever he’s asked about it and zoro just kinda shrugs. they’re just luffyandzoro and zoroandluffy. the king and his lionheart. drift compatible. partners. captain and first mate. the sailor and the north star. sun and moon. they simply Are. what does that entail? well brother. they hang out

i miss luffy. the concept of freedom embodied as a person makes me grieve my life a little LMFAO. he is everything to me. he is my dreams as a person. completely free and changing the world. everything i want to be so bad. i adore him. he is a thousand suns to me in his brilliance. id burn the world down for a hug from him. i would do unspeakable things for a taste of the freedom he lives. i miss him. i wish i could reread one piece for the first time again. the joy and grief and anger of that story all over again that makes me feel alive. i want to feel alive like luffy does. stubborn in his place on this earth because he’s got dreams that are worth everything, but also completely content with dying in the process of reaching his dream. and yet still, he refuses to die because it means he can’t protect the ones he loves. he will shave off years of his life if it buys you a second more. he is so fucking selfless in his selfish way of living. he is my everything.

I hate the common interpretation of zoro.

“If Luffy asked, Zoro would kill any of the straw hats 🤓☝️” “if Zoro was at whole cake, sanji would have died🤓☝️” HE WOULD NOT DO ANY OF THAT SHUT UP IM IN YOUR HOME!!!!!

Zoro cares about his crew so much, he considers himself their protecter. It’s why he sleeps like three hours a day, it’s why hes always wary of strangers. He really fucking loves and cares about his crew.

He wouldn’t say it because that’s not in his nature, it would be out of character (and frankly bad writing) to have zoro look into the camera and go “I love my crew”

Instead he shows it; he takes the graveyard shift, he takes one of the stronger enemies, he trains and trains, plays the role of boogeyman.

It’s in the way the rest of the crew behaves aswell!! They’re silly and weird and reckless because they KNOW and UNDERSTAND that zoro is right there, ready and eager to kick some ass or spill some blood.

Zoro would not have killed Sanji at whole cake, nor would he just kill any straw hat is asked. He isn’t some thoughtless machine who does what he’s told. He fucking loves his crew, and yes that fucking includes sanji.
