My open letter to the Moomin fandom

cw: swearing. Not a lot of it, but it's there.

I don't know if I'll ever actually post this, but I need to get this written down because I just can't with this fandom anymore and I need to get my emotions out somehow.

Before I actually get into it, I want to make one thing clear. This is not a personal attack against anyone. You are allowed to have your own opinions, to ship who you like, to do whatever you want to, really (try to stay on the legal side tho), just like I have the right to the very same things.

You can disagree with me, you can even tell me just how much you disagree with me, as long as you stay kind and respectful about it. That's just how people work. We're not gonna agree on everything, and that's fine. Great even. Otherwise the world would be a very boring place.

Mostly, I love this fandom. The people are very open and welcoming and the vibes are absolutely top notch. There are a lot of very skilled and passionate people here who fill this fandom with joy and life and creativity.

But ever since I first joined this fandom, there has been a certain attitude on here concerning Snufmin, the most popular ship in this fandom (for understandable reasons), that has irked me every time I came accross it in any form.

"Well, obviously they're more than just friends, you have to be blind not to see that."

I hate that fucking phrase so much.

Now, before I start going into my biggest problem with this wide-spread attitude, I'm gonna look at that expression for a second. "more than just friends."

Usually I try not to get snagged on phrases like this, because it's really just a common expression (even I use it occasionally. probably.) and people probably don't mean it that way, but in this specific case it's actually relevant to the larger problem, so bear with me for a bit.

"More than just friends" explicitly implies a sort of ranking or hierachy. That romantic love is inherently more valuable than platonic love. It devalues platonic relationships despite the fact that they're actually equal to romantic relationships.

This is a very important point here. Equality. I am not trying to put either of them above the other. In my opinion, neither of them is more important than the other. They're just two of the many ways you can express your love for someone. Both of them can be equally deep and important.

Okay, it's time to finally take a look at the actualy contents of this phrase. The part of the attitude that has been chipping away at me for the past few years until the dam finally burst.

It's not a secret that, while they're incredibly close, Snufkin and Moomin are not canonically a romantic couple. Now, would Tove have made Moomintroll and Snufkin explicitly a couple if she had lived in a time where that would have been possible? Maybe. We'll never know, since we can't exactly ask her anymore.

But regardless of Tove's intentions, what we ended up with is this beautifully ambigous relationship, that could be anything, really.

The relationship is beautiful. It's close and trusting and endless and admiration and adoration and written in the fabric of the fucking universe. But it's not defined.

It's very fitting for a relationship that serves as an allegory for longing to be that way.

Longing isn't defined, it's complicated and deep, and everyone feels it differently and it can be felt regardless of what kind of relationship you have with the person or the place or the thing you're longing for, which is why the ambiguity of their feelings for each other and the deep love and complex emotions they feel is a perfect representations of a very complicated emotion.

Now, to make one thing clear: I'm not bashing anyone for shipping these two. Again, the relationship is ambigous, and a romantic reading of the source text is just as valid as a platonic one or everything in between.

There's a lot to like, and they make for a very compelling ship.

My problem is with the people who act like Snufmin is the foregone conclusion. The only valid interpretation.

The people who don't tag their fanfics as Snufmin because "It's basically cannon."

The people who post stuff about how you have to be stupid not to see that they're obviously a couple. How the people who prefer a platonic reading are willfully ignorant or blind to the elephant in the room.

Maybe it's the aromantic in me, the person who was told growing up again and again that that you had to find romantic love to be complete, that was made to feel like something was wrong with me because I didn't.

The kid who was told "they must be more than friends."

Who was made to feel like platonic love, the only kind of love I felt, was inherently less valuable, less cherishable than the romantic kind.

So yeah, maybe it's the aromantic in me, but I haven't been a huge shipper ever since when I was around 18. I'm not anti-shipping, but when I'm in a fandom most ships just end up on a scale from vaguely positive to vaguely negative for me, with most of them ending up in the neutral zone.

I'm not gonna seek out any content of the ship specifically, but a good piece of fanart is a good piece of fanart and a fanfic with an interesting storyline intrigues me, regardless of whether or not it has a ship in it.

Snufmin was on the upper end of this scale for me when I first joined the fandom. Not even neutral, but vaguely positive. They're really cute together, to the point where I'd actually seek out content specifically for it being Snufmin (There's some really cute animatics out there. 10/10. would recommend) and even came up with an entire AU based around the ship.

But as the years went on, and the comments and untagged fanfics and this fucking attitude in the entire fandom went on and on and on, it all started piling up. Chipping away at me. Discomfort started to settle in, and I felt more and more uncomfortable, less welcomed in a fandom that used to be a source of comfort for me.

I started to hate this fucking ship. Genuine hatred, which is a rare thing for me. I guess I blamed it for the loss of something dear to me.

It got to the point where I left this fandom almost entirely, only staying tethered to it through the fact that I still enjoyed and consumed the source material.

I've been getting better about it recently, slowly finding my way back through the things I originally found joy in while trying to avoid everything else best as I can, but that's my personaly journey and I'm not going to bore you with the details. Just know that the hatred is gone, with only occasional annoyance left.

The attitude that caused it though, isn't. It's still there, just as it was back then.

Again, I'm not telling you to stop shipping Snufmin. I get it. It's a great ship and I'm glad you find joy in it.

But the next time you post about it, try not to devalue the just as valid platonic love these two can feel for each other.

I'd appreciate it, and while it's probably not the most popular opinion, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

With Lucifer being kind and caring with other desfortunates, like the Leviathan, why he allowed for imp and hellhounds to be treated bandly?

Why he considered even that hell needed social castes?

Why imps are considered inferior compared to other demons?

Why re hellhounds treated like pets or animal? judging how Loona's orphanage was like.

And sorry for the long answer! 🙏 I spend nearly a week thinking and writing about this.

Well first we have to look at Lucifer and make things clear. Lucifer is an immortal being with almost limiteless power. That should mean he walks through time and history and learn a lot ... so he must know almost everything by now, right? Well I think this is very wrong and here is why. You can't remember anything. Even if he is an angel, he is presented in the show as a normal being like you and me. So that means that at some point he stopped with major development with his body, mind, character etc. He was raised to be who he is now and that seemingly never changed. And probably never will.

As an angel he was very open minded, creative, kind, caring, helpful ... full of light. Those traits were really tuned down when he lived in hell. He became depressed, isolated, lonely, sad and prideful. He sees the sinners as the last scum, but that wasn't always this way. In the beginning, when the first sinner arived - Luc actually tried to do what Charlie is doing now. But after many failures, humanitys cruel history and his depiction as the worst, the evil, the devil etc. ... He lost his hope and became this prideful prick. (Sorry but he really is judgemental to others/sinners)

So what about the other demons. Well the hellborns are his actual people. He doesn't hate them, but also doesn't love them. But still like the hellborns more than the sinners. It's the sinners fault that they have to live in hell (due to Luc and many others), but it's heavens fault that the hellborns have to live in this shitty dumpster. A dumspter where everything lands which wasn't good enough for "creation". And now we come to the point why hell is such a mess ...

Luc might be the most powerful being in hell, but he is no leader. He never was. His duty in heaven was to create, to invent and to spread light. He often failed as the leader of his own house. And he knows that, so he was glad that the other 6 sins took the responsibility of their ring and with that also the hellborn. Lilith meanwhile took care of the the sinners and hell was stabilized ... well till to a point where sins profed to be bad leaders aswell as Lucifer. Of course all in their own ways ... Bee is too much into parties, Mammon is Mammon, Satan is too combative etc.

And now to hells hierachy ... I never understood why they always called imps, hellhounds and hellborns. Sometimes also succubus and inccubus. Like heh? I thought imp and hellhound was a name for a species. And tbh that's how I see it. Hellborns are all demons born in hell (also Goetia). For me all of the species their have their adventages and disadventages. So there is no clear hierachy in power levels between the hellborns (Goetias doesn't count for this one). But in a social infrastructure imps may beaten down, because of the lack of "magic". It's hard to explain, but like I said I'm currently on it to find my solution for my hc.

Now to your question.

Lucifer never wanted/insisted on anything like castes. He just wasn't really caring, cause others made the desicions. And Goetias have their hand on this. They are the noble fuck-theys who want their fun with beings who can't defend themself. And Luc really doesn't want to care. For him it's better to ignore it.

Like I said before, I think the Goetias are the ones responsable for that. HEH? What about Bee? What about the adoption/orphanage? Well Bee is part of the Goetias aswell. I thought she is even the king of them all or so ... But I think she actually doesn't really care and even doesn't know about the adoption, cause her parties drown out the cries of the pups. Sorry.

And maybe hell had a "medieval time" where they established these social structures. Maybe that's why they act how they do. Maybe hellhounds have a more animalistic side, so they causing this image and that's why people treat them like pets. Maybe imps were easy to control. ...

Guidance vs Leadership, and why Crosshair is a Dad now (cuz he's not a Soldier anymore)

let's talk about Crosshair and Omega seeing eye to eye, forming a relationship beyond militarism and Crosshair being a better father than Hunter (oh noo, whoopsie).

In S03 E03 of TBB, Omega is in charge of the first part of their escape because knowing her way around in the facility is *her* expertise. Once they are outside and have to resort to violence, Crosshair is taking over cuz fighting is *his* expertise. First, Crosshair follows Omega's lead, then Omega follows Crosshair's lead; they are able to pass the torch of leadership between each other seamlessly because there is no hierarchy separating them. The way they acknowledge each other's skills shows that they don't see "leader" as something that you *are* but something that you *do*. "Leader" is not an immutable identity that you're assigned (or assign yourself), but an action that anybody who has the needed expertise can perform.

Hunter is a leader not because his actions justify this role, but because he sees it as his identity. (I've talked about Hunter & Leadership before). Now, if you self-identify as a leader, you inevitably establish a hierarchy. Leadership draws a line between the leader and those who follow. All of the Batchers still cling to military hierachy even though there is no external need; they could self-organize their group differently, but they don't cuz old habits die hard and the galaxy has changed so drastically, they cling to the familiar. (more on leaderhip here and here).

Crosshair manages to do what Hunter didn't so far: Crosshair follows Omega's lead not because she's his commander (or because she begs like a child), but because she has the needed knowledge to guide them. Once Omega is out of her depth, Crosshair takes over. As an adult, he has more knowledge about the (literal) outside world, as shown in details like him tracking the flight path of the shuttle.

At this point, I think Crosshair is one step ahead of Hunter in his arc. They both start at diametrically opposed extremes of the same spectrum. Hunter is willing to form a family, Crosshair rejects this idea. Hunter trusts Omega very fast, Crosshair trusts Omega very slowly. These characteristics also become their "tragic flaws" that heros of a story often have. Hunter is *too* willing to accept Omega as family, he even sacrifices one of his teammates for it. Crosshair is *too* reluctant to trust anybody, his isolation makes him vulnerable towards the Empire's ideology. They both have to meet in the middle and solve the Hedgehog's Dilemma in order to become a family.

In order to do that, the squad of soldiers has to evolve into a group of people connected by love, not duty. Crosshair took that step in a leap in S03E03, Hunter got a taste of it in S03E02 when he tried to steer the young cadets away from militarism towards something new.

Like it doesn't affect me, frankly it makes me giggle sometimes but I just want to know which is better to ignore or to respond and put them in their place? Considering a lot of it is repetitive and just them calling us names which is uncreative dare I say 🤭 another thing it's funny how they prove our point with how L's behavior fuels hate even within the fandom while they're trying to flip the table saying that it affects him or we shouldn't criticize him cause what if it hurts his feelings when in reality we should worry about the vragile young fans that this could push them to break

I think i'm very desensitised to hate asks and death treaths at this point. After 13 years of it, and it beeing a monthly or sometimes weekly occurrence, the words means less and less to me, and they don't hurt me anymore. I'm so confident i know i'm right, and i know how scared those who send these asks are that they're wrong, that it helps build my confidence. I don't have to send hateful asks or use ableist terms to argue my points of view. It's easy dismissing asks who've reached the ad hominem or namecalling stage of Graham's hierachy of disagreement. They've lost the argument by then. I win.

The best thing is absolutely always to ignore them, block and report it if necessary. Responding to it will only fuel them and make them more angry. Posting hate ask on your dash for everyone to see and be exposed to also isn't a good idea. I only do it to prove a point every now and then, when people need to be reminded of what we larries go through as fans, unless they forget.

I have gotten hate asks since 2012 from calderics, elounor stans, hay*ors, gryles stans, solos and antis. Even from other fandoms. How dare i say that Sabr*na Carp*nter and Bar*y Ke*ghan is a PR relationship!?!?! Lol. Some of the hate asks are very funny, and i've collected a good bunch of them, because i'm planning to make a masterpost of funny hate asks i've gotten over the years. There are some very creative ways i've been mentally offed by antis. They're not the sharpest tool in the shed, that's for sure. I pity them for the most part. They're either very gaslighted, scared, mentally unwell or raging homophobes. They're oftentimes very young, with little developed impulsive control and have no other outlets for their hurt and anger. A lot of the time it's misdirected anger as well.

Sometimes it helps sharing the hate you get in private with others. I got a funny one in norwegian the other day (norwegian antis exists!). My first hate ask in norwegian ever. And it was written in their dialect and that made it sound so silly, i was so distracted by that i don't even remember the content of it. It was funny as shit. So of course i immediately sent it off to @carolinelw91 😂

I did report a death threat on twitter yesterday, not directed at me but to larries as a whole. I'm more sensitive to others recieving hate or experiencing hate, then when it's directed at me. I know i can handle it. I also know that others aren’t like me, and that it poisons the fandom.

If you get asks from antis that are nice and polite, then i don't see why you shouldn't answer it and argue against their views. It's not like it's a very hard thing to do 😆. It is pretty pointless, waste of time and like talking to a wall, but if i've got time and am in the mood to educate them, i'll indulge them.

Vessel: the leader, the body “Seroscent” has chosen, The Vessel gets first pick of everything as they’re the temple that Seroscent has chosen, The Vessel wears black

Favorite: sacrifices to Seroscent, usually young and/or vulnerable, Favorites are chosen by Seroscent to basically be his personal service person, they are abused by Seroscent and manipulated into believing how he treats him is due to love for them. After he’s done with them, they’re served to the rest of the cult and sacrificed, Leo was the last Favorite before the cult was dismantled, only reason he survived was because his blood was sweet and the cult members were addicted to it. Favorites are usually able to get second pick of victims (after Seroscent of course), are also fed fresher produce, milk and occasionally honey as a dessert. Favorites wear red and a tooth necklace (usually from their own tooth, it’s taken out as a sign of devotion).

Sycophants: Angels are like The Vessel’s disciples/missionaries, they’re the ones who go into the city most often and spread the word of Seroscent, they also tend to The Vessel

All the cosplays I made in 2024! At first I was a bit disappointed to see that I didn't do as many new cosplays as I did last year but... that's just stupid. It doesn't matter how much I made new and how much I didn't. I had fun and enjoyed every day I cosplayed and it didn't matter if the costume was new or old or borrowed. The things I didn't make do not matter, there is nothing lost and thinking so just devalues the things I did instead. There is no hierachy in value or worth in between my choices. And that's really nice. :)

What I most liked about them is that I managed to continue so make stuff that I'm happy and satisfied with without crunching them out, and that often just need some minor updates after a first wear and that I enjoy wearing again.

I do have to get behind on posting all the photos of the last year.... oh boi. :'D
