If you pay attention to the hype, you'd think that all the action on "AI" (an incoherent grab-bag of only marginally related technologies) was in generating text and images. Man, is that ever wrong. The AI hype machine could put every commercial illustrator alive on the breadline and the savings wouldn't pay the kombucha budget for the million-dollar-a-year techies who oversaw Dall-E's training run. The commercial market for automated email summaries is likewise infinitesimal.
The fact that CEOs overestimate the size of this market is easy to understand, since "CEO" is the most laptop job of all laptop jobs. Having a chatbot summarize the boss's email is the 2025 equivalent of the 2000s gag about the boss whose secretary printed out the boss's email and put it in his in-tray so he could go over it with a red pen and then dictate his reply.

The narrative around these bots is that they are there to help humans. In this story, the hospital buys a radiology bot that offers a second opinion to the human radiologist. If they disagree, the human radiologist takes another look. In this tale, AI is a way for hospitals to make fewer mistakes by spending more money. An AI assisted radiologist is less productive (because they re-run some x-rays to resolve disagreements with the bot) but more accurate.
In automation theory jargon, this radiologist is a "centaur" â a human head grafted onto the tireless, ever-vigilant body of a robot
Of course, no one who invests in an AI company expects this to happen. Instead, they want reverse-centaurs: a human who acts as an assistant to a robot. The real pitch to hospital is, "Fire all but one of your radiologists and then put that poor bastard to work reviewing the judgments our robot makes at machine scale."
No one seriously thinks that the reverse-centaur radiologist will be able to maintain perfect vigilance over long shifts of supervising automated process that rarely go wrong, but when they do, the error must be caught:

Steyr Puch Haflinger 700 AP Prototype, 1959. A lightweight off-road vehicle with astonishing off-road capabilities, thanks to its front and rear differential locks and low weight. This is the 48th one produced and left the factory on the October 22nd, 1959. Originally intended for the Austrian army, it was kept at the factory in order to create a prototype for the US market, identifiable by the size of its headlights and its odometer calibrated in miles. As it was never shipped to the USA, it was finally sold to Fiat (the brandâs distributor at the time) on the 24th October 1960 and then registered in Turin, becoming the first and only example delivered to Italy in 1960. The Haflinger was discovered in the small mountain village of Curiglia in Italy, hidden in a tool shed only accessible via a stone path. The restoration carried out has preserved the originality of this machine as much as possible. Since October 1959 it has travelled only 11,990 miles and will be offered at auction at RĂ©tromobile 2025.

All restaurants, cafeterias, and vending machines should stock two differently sized portions. The average halfling consumes roughly a third the amount of food as a human. Because of various frictions (packaging, labor), prices are expected to be more than one third for a halfling portion. Because of this, it's best to have systems in place that allow splitting human-sized dishes, or bringing home leftovers, or making packages resealable.
Housing presents a serious problem. A single-family dwelling for a halfling family requires roughly one fifth the volume as for a single-family human dwelling, though costs do not scale down at the same rate. However, if built to halfling scale, the interior of the dwelling will only be accessible to halflings, which presents serious problems for e.g. police, firefighters, social workers, repairmen, or anyone else who might have cause to go into the interior of the home, to say nothing of friends and coworkers. Building for halfling scale is attractive for a variety of reasons, with cost being one of the biggest, but this might result in de facto segregation, and puts considerable strain on civic infrastructure and city markets due to duplication. Another social concern is that all interactions might, by default, take place inside human homes which have worse accommodations for halflings. Special note should also be made of mixed-species couples, who suffer extra burdens within the household. These problems are intractable, as some trade-off must always be made.
Tools, household goods, and clothing are naturally split into two markets. For clothing, near-complete segregation is expected. For everything else, partial segregation is expected: a halfling cannot effectively use many human tools due to differences in grip strength and grip circumference, to say nothing of brute strength. However, many consumables can suit both species, and it's expected that cost reduction efforts will inevitably result in a single offering for both in cases where that makes remotely makes sense. Purchases using refillable containers from bulk are encouraged, as each person can determine what's best to fulfill their own needs.
Due to lower costs (housing, food, clothing), halflings can in theory work for lower wages. For certain jobs, particularly those requiring physical strength, humans are more capable on average, and for others, particularly those requiring manual dexterity, halflings are more capable on average. For jobs which do not have significant differences, wage discrimination is recommended by contentious, and is an ongoing conversation.
There are a number of "segregationist forces" in society, driven by convenience, culture, and market forces. Once segregation has become, there is every expectation that it will snowball: a neighborhood which is inaccessible to humans will have businesses that cater only to halflings, and once halfling business is concentrated, any "mixed" business has less incentive to cater to halflings. Legislation can counterbalance these forces by requiring that all businesses be able to service both humans and halflings, and accommodate both human and halfling services, but this admittedly comes at enormous cost.
Overall, there are certain recommendations that are nearly costless and can be implemented as best practices immediately, and more complicated, costly reforms that will take significant political will and budgetary consideration. Beyond that, there are questions of social engineering and the level to which it is important or preferable that these things be done.

I know it seems like striking on social media might not do enough, but as someone who has been outright obsessively using the internet since I was a child to the point that it is literally woven in my soul, been active and involved in online activism for about five years, and been using social media as marketing for about the same amount of time, I can confidently say that
THIS FUCKING WORKS!!
People base their entire businesses on their success on social media. They look at trending topics on twitter and don't see bite sized chunks of culture distilled to its finest and worst moments, they see market data! They don't see you as a single human being, they see you as a data point among thousands run through a probably AI assisted system that's prone to fucking up, that determines everything they're going to do.
How they're going to advertise, who they target it with it, what the general public wants. Every single major corporation uses data from social media websites to do this. Every. Single. One. Social media is a lot of things, and one of those things is a tool for business and politics. We know for a fact that social media politics bleeds out into the real world very fucking quickly.
Even if you can't strike financially, even if you have to go to work or school to survive, striking on social media is one of the best things you can do. Even if it's quiet. People are going to notice when thousands upon thousands of users across various sites go completely dark, and even more when some of them start getting real fucking loud about this. The US Capitalist Infused Government loves sweeping war crimes under the rug once they think the general public has forgotten about their atrocities and fallen into complacency. This system has been doing this for literal centuries.
Social media is just the newest and most expansive form we as a species have developed in the ongoing invention of ways to express our thoughts about things. It's the weirdest one, that's for sure, but executives pay attention to it. They don't often seek to understand it beyond a very basic level, because as I said, they view us as numbers on a screen, not as multifaceted incredibly and deeply fucked human beings. They do not seek to understand us on a personal level unless they think the cost of it won't outweigh the potential profit.
Pattern recognition is the tool of the moment. Machine Learning. Gathering endless amounts of data so we can replicate human existence through machines. You may think that social media strikes are ineffective because social media is just on the internet and it's "not real", but it is real! You are really doing stuff! You are contributing! Even if you're just lurking! Basic amounts of engagement can make a huge impact in a busted algorithm. Maybe you're not someone who would ever be drafted into an actual war-zone due to physical or mental health conditions, but you are probably a part of a key demographic of people that businesses are absolutely hungry for.
The budding adult has always been the target of greedy capitalists basically since this system was established and continued to get worse over time. The stage of your life when you are in the age range of 18-25 is an incredibly important transitional period, followed by a transitional period every six months until you lose sense of what six months even is because you haven't been happy in eight, and if you're in the 18-25 range currently, you got extra fucked by the pandemic. The world is in a turbulent stage and we are at the center of all of it and have been since 2001. Every single social media marketing expert will tell you the 18-25 demographic of social media users is a target demographic, because they are the most prone to extremes due to a life chock full of them.
We have to remember to be human, but we have to also know how to speak their language. They just see us as numbers? Let's show them some fucking numbers. Make posts about Gaza trend on every platform you have your hands on. Even if it's just liking posts, that gives them a slight boost in the algorithm. Commenting on posts is especially important on sites like Twitter and Instagram. But across every site the most important thing to do is reblog/retweet/share/send/copy link, whatever it is for that site, it is the biggest thing that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE looks at.
From a humble artist to a head of marketing at a billion dollar corporation about to have a meeting with a barely over 21 intern about how they need to run the twitter account, to said intern bumbling their way through adulthood with a job they only feel they're good at because they've been using social media since Skype was invented. We need to be loud, we need to make sure this can't be ignored, we can't sweep this under the rug. Mass media, especially coming out of the West, has been trying to censor, de-sanitize, and keep this issue quiet.
DO NOT LET YOURSELF BE SILENCED

Say that as many times as you can. Do not let it be ignored. A silent populous is a complacent one. Use your voice, even as small as it may seem. Make noise. Be loud. Be annoying. Don't let this be ignored. Talk about it everywhere you go. Do not let this be ignored.
Sometimes even we get disconnected from the real people around us. We base our sense of worth as a person based on the numbers going up or down but instead of developing a gambling addiction we just got angry about it but still fall into it because of cultural conditioning. But even if you only have let's say, completely random example, 70 followers. And only a small percent of them will see your post. Let's say maybe 20 on average, 30 on a good day, and even higher based on the machinations of fate. That's still 20 people who took time out of their day to read something you wrote, process something you created, share a part of your experience of living.
And likely they felt compelled to share it too, therefore increasing the spread of people who feel your influence. 20 people may not seem like a lot, but that has a major impact. Now imagine posts into the hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands and even millions. Those aren't just numbers. Each and every single one of those is just another person who might have reblogged a post because someone they like shared it, or because they wanted to spread its message, and that simple act causes a single post to have massive waves of effects from simple ripples.
Don't let yourself be discouraged. Don't think your voice or your impact "isn't enough to matter." Everything counts.
Don't let this be ignored. Don't become complacent. Know that every little thing counts, and to do every little thing you can.

Humans are weird: Poop Crystals

The pace in which human technology progressed over the millennia was rather standard for a class 4 species. Even when accounting the periods of scientific degradation which resulted from natural plagues or religious persecution; it was expected that humans would not achieve advanced space travel until another 2-3 thousand years had passed.
Scientifically speaking human scientists were well more advanced than the society they lived in, but due to the technological limitations of the human race they were held back from implementing their designs. A primary limitation was the lack of a sufficiently powerful power source. They did have many different forms of power generators ranging from solar to nuclear, but to power larger machines often required equally large energy sources. To power their ships alone around a third of their vessels were dedicated to the power cores. Â Â
With these restrictions in place travel between stars for humans often relied on decade long journeys in cryo sleep; which ironically required even more power generators to maintain. Their large size made them easy targets for natural disasters such as space debris or prowling space pirates seeking an easy profit margin at the slave markets. These dangers became a standard for human travel until the Terran civilization encountered the planet Nolla 987 and the species that called it home.
During a long duration colonization trip the human ship âMidasâ was struck by the trail debris of a rogue comet and knocked off course. The robotic caretakers tried their best to maintain the course, but with the damage done to the ship their primary programming to maintain the lives of the crew kicked in and diverted the ship to the nearest habitable planet for debarkation. Nolla 987 was the closest planet with a stable atmosphere. Originally charted several years earlier but deemed unsuitable for colonization or industrial expansion, it was not ear marked for either and left alone; until the Midas incident that is.
The landing was not a smooth one. Several engines had been damaged and multiple hull breaches resulted in portions of the ship being shredded away during the entry process. It would be safer to say that the Midas crash landed during the final stretch of the maneuver, but with a 73% survival rate of the crew a rather acceptable crash landing.
One by one the crew and colonists were unfrozen to find the ship a burning wreck and only a handful of robotic assistants still functioning. The industrial printing machines were relatively undamaged but without the ships power core they could not be used to print components or tools needed to make the necessary repairs. The crew was then forced to ration its remaining power supply and divided into two teams. The first team would comb through the wreckage and salvage what they could of the wreck while also building shelter. The second group would scout the surrounding area for anything of use and then report back.
It did not take long for the second team to stumble upon a nest of the dominant species of the planet. An insectoid called the âSectarâ which ranged from the size of a house cat to as large as a two story building. These insects digested their food and excreted the waste into a dense crystalian substance that they then used to build massive hive like complexes.
The occupants of the hive had been driven from the hive by the crash landing of the Midas leaving it almost completely empty save for a few eggs and new hatchlings who were not strong enough to flee on their own. Several of the second team members had been scanning the crystal structures while interacting with the newborn Sectarâs. To quote a journal entry of one of them, âThey were like insect golden retrievers. Extremely derpy with at least four times as many sets of eyes. They followed us around on their legs like we were their mothers and clung to our legs when we began to return to our ship for the night.â
At least one of the second team was confirmed to have brought a hatchling back to their camp. There was a debate amongst the survivors on if they should try and eat it, but the notion was quickly squashed as they still had food reserves and no one was brave enough to see how the alienâs bio matter would react inside the human digestive system.
The same human who had brought the hatchling back offered it a portion of food which it eagerly ate. Not long after the hatchling excreted a hardened crystal roughly the size of a thimble. When the human made to pick up the seemingly beautiful gem they recoiled as an electrical discharge shocked their hand. This immediately drew the attention of the rest of the crew who began carefully examining the crystal substance. After some rather rough jury-rigging, the crystal was wired into one of the printer machines and to the surprise of everyone powered the machine. The crew quickly learned that the older Sectarâs would produce larger crystal excrements but were extremely hostile and territorial. Smaller Sectarâs were deemed more desirable for the time being as they were easier to train and harvest crystals from. Â
Within a matter of days the crew had not only collected enough crystals to power all of their machines and send out a distress signal, but also used the new found crystal power to create a full settlement on the planet complete with water filtration, crop fields, and a sizeable wall to keep out the native wildlife.
It would not be for another thirty years before a passing human shipped picked up their distress signal and went to investigate the planet. When they arrived on Nolla 987 they were astonished to find a fully functioning colony complete with limited orbital facilities. Nearly every human settler and their descendants had a Sectar in their household that they would take care of and feed and in exchange use their crystal excrement to power nearly everything they needed to live.
From there it was only a matter of time before the entirety of human space was aware of the events of Nolla 987 and the Sectar species. Within the decade the colony on Nolla 987 became the capital for a fully settled world with dozens of cities and communities. The Sectar species were transported throughout human space and began being implemented in all aspects of society.
There was initial resistance to the new power source by existing power blocks which realized Sectar power would be far more efficient than nuclear powered engines, but unlike other power sources they had squashed in development the Sectar power option had thirty years of trial and error to back it up with research as well as a fully functioning model with the planet of Nolla 987.
Sectarâs became a common sight on every human planet and were treated like common pets. It was even studied that when introduced to different food sources the energy output of crystal excrement could be increased resulting in certain food industries booming overnight. The composition of spices, cooking technique, and flavoring became an entirely new and highly prestigious academic field with the most successful of its practitioners being highly sought after by companies.
The technological capabilities of humanity experienced a massive surge in advancement within fifty years to the point humans no longer needed cryo ships to travel between stars. Those who had been studying humanity found themselves now being introduced to them as humans winded up on their doorstep with a Sectar on their shoulder and a perverse obsession with collecting its bodily waste. Commander Cody x Reader x Captain Rex
The twin suns of Tatooine dipped below the horizon, casting a soft, fiery glow across the sand dunes. The planetâs desolation had an eerie beauty to itâone that had become a quiet refuge for the reader and the child. For months now, theyâd kept to the edges of this forgotten world, far from the eyes of the Republic and Separatists alike.
The loth cat, whom theyâd found scrabbling through the dust on the outskirts of their makeshift farm, had become an unlikely companion. Its sleek, blue-grey fur had started to grow back, its eyes glinting with a sharpness that matched the desert itself. It was, without a doubt, a symbol of something still clinging to life in the emptiness of their exile. And, despite the grueling hardships theyâd faced before this, there was a strange comfort in its presence.
The mechanic shop was a far cry from the quiet isolation of a farm. The reader had quickly adapted to the new environmentâfixing speeders, engines, and droids. It was more familiar to her than the tedious cycle of planting crops and praying for a harvest. Tatooine had no shortage of broken-down machines, and the demand for repairs was constant. It kept them busy.
The small, makeshift shop was wedged between a cantina and a market stall. Despite its modest size, it was functional. Sheâd painted a faded sign with crude letteringâRepair & Salvage. Inside, the shop was a cluttered paradise of parts and tools. The air always smelled faintly of oil, rust, and the heat of the desert sun that relentlessly beat down on everything.
The child, now quietly watching her work with his small hands, had started to pick up bits of the trade. He was clever, inquisitiveâhis Force sensitivity seemed to lend itself to the work, too. But there was still that feeling of unease lingering in the air, something unspoken between them. Despite their time together, she hadnât fully explained why sheâd saved him, why sheâd taken him in. And in return, he hadnât pressed her for answers. Perhaps he didnât need them.
âFixing things feels easier than farming,â she muttered one evening, wiping oil from her hands as she glanced over at the boy.
He didnât respond immediately, focused on cleaning a small tool heâd just finished using. Heâd been learning quickly.
âYeah, I guess so,â he finally said, his voice a mix of curiosity and the wariness heâd developed over time. âBut, do you miss⊠I mean, we couldâve been anywhere, right?â
She paused. The sound of the desert wind whistled faintly through the cracks in the shop walls, but she didnât answer immediately. There was a silence in the room as the loth cat padded over and jumped onto a nearby crate, curling up into a ball. The childâs question hung in the air.
âDo you miss it? Being with them?â he repeated, voice quieter this time.
It took her a moment before she spoke. She stood and leaned against the workbench, looking out toward the open door. The desert stretched endlessly beyond, quiet except for the distant hum of a passing speeder.
âSometimes,â she admitted. âBut weâre safer here. And itâs⊠simpler.â Her voice faltered for a moment, her gaze lingering on the horizon before it shifted back to him. âWe can keep you safe here. Thatâs what matters.â
The child nodded slowly, but she could see the wheels turning in his head, the lingering doubt. He was old enough to understand that safety wasnât always as simple as finding a new place to hide.
But she couldnât bring herself to tell him that hiding was only temporary, that the world would eventually catch up to them. She wouldnât let that happen, not if she could help it. And she wasnât sure if that made her a fool, but it was the only thing she could do to atone for what sheâd dragged him into.
Their quiet life in the desert was their only solace. Sheâd gotten used to the sound of the loth catâs purring in the corner, to the childâs shy attempts to fix things beside her, and even to the heat of the desert sun that felt like it never stopped beating down on the sand.
But as days bled into months, the feeling of being watchedâof being huntedânever quite left. She couldnât shake the sensation that someone, somewhere, knew where they were. Even on this barren world, she couldnât escape what had been set into motion. The ghost of the Republic, of the Jedi, of Palpatine and his web of lies, was still out there, waiting for her to slip.
One day, while she was working on a speeder engine, a familiar soundâa crackle through the commâbroke the stillness of the shop. Her hand froze, mid-repair. Her eyes shot to the communicator on the counter.
âDonât even think about it,â she muttered under her breath, hoping it wasnât what she feared.
The transmission crackled again, louder this time. She wiped her greasy hands on a rag and sighed, reluctantly walking over to the comm. Her fingers hovered over the switch. She hesitated. The childâs curious gaze fixed on her, but he didnât say anything.
With a deep breath, she pressed the button.
âYes?â
It was Rexâs voice. Strong. Familiar.
âHey,â he said, his tone almost tentative. âWhere are you?â
She glanced back at the child, who was now fidgeting with a broken droid part. He didnât look up, but the tension in the room was palpable. She bit her lip.
âSomewhere safe,â she replied, her voice cold. âNot where you want to be.â
There was a pause on the other end, Rexâs voice quiet for a moment, like he was weighing his next words. âWeâve been looking for you. Youâve been gone a while. The Jedi are stillââ
âIâm not interested in the Jedi,â she interrupted sharply. âI told you, Iâm done with that. You should be, too.â
Another silence, heavy, before he responded again, quieter now. ïżœïżœLook, I donât care where you are. I donât care about the Jedi or the Separatists. I care about you.â
She exhaled sharply. She could hear the weight in his words, feel it pull at the corners of her heart. But she had to stay strong.
âIâm not the same person you knew, Rex,â she said, her voice softening but still firm. âI canâtââ
âWeâre coming for you,â Rex cut in, a promise hidden beneath his words. âWherever you are. Weâll find you.â
The line went silent again, but this time, she didnât reach for the comm to hang up. She stood still, her eyes drifting to the child, who had now stopped fidgeting and was staring at her intently. For a moment, she wasnât sure what to say next.
But the choice had already been made. She couldnât let the past come for themânot now.
âStay where you are, Rex,â she said, her voice low. âThis life⊠itâs the only one we can have now.â
The transmission ended abruptly, and as the static faded, she felt the weight of her decision sink deep into her chest. She couldnât outrun her past forever, but she had to try. For the kidâs sake. For hers.
The comm clicked off, and the desert wind whistled through the cracks in the walls once more.

The heat of Tatooine never relented, always oppressive, always relentless. The twin suns glared down, but in the small mechanic shop, the air was thick with the hum of droids and the scent of oil. The faint noise of the desert outside was a constant, but it had become part of her rhythm now. The shop was her sanctuary, her space of peaceâand for a while, it had felt like the world had forgotten her.
She had heard the whispers, of courseâthe rumors of Rexâs death, of Codyâs desertion from the Empire. The news had spread in quiet circles, murmured over cantina tables and in back-alley conversations. But she hadnât believed themânot fully. She couldnât. Sheâd mourned them, both of them. And with that mourning, something cold had settled in her heart. The truth she couldnât face, the possibility that both men, once so important to her, were lost to her forever, had nearly shattered her.
But now, in the stillness of her shop, as she wiped grease from her hands, she heard the sound of footsteps outside the doorâtwo sets, both heavy with purpose. A faint chill ran down her spine, her senses on alert, even after all this time.
She wiped her hands again, her mind racing. It had been monthsâyears, evenâsince sheâd had a real visitor, someone who wasnât just passing through the dusty town, looking for a quick fix. Her first instinct was to ignore it, to retreat into the silence of her world. But she couldnât. Not this time.
She turned her back to the door, taking a deep breath, unsure whether to brace herself or pretend nothing was coming. But then the door creaked open, the soft jingle of the bell above signaling an arrival.
âMorning, maâam,â a voice said.
She froze.
It wasnât just the familiarity in the voiceâit was the tone, the cadence, the weight of it. A voice she hadnât heard in what felt like a lifetime.
Her heart stopped, her breath caught in her throat. Slowly, she turned, her eyes locking onto two figures standing in the doorway. Two familiar figuresâno, too familiar. One was tall, his hair a bit longer than she remembered but still as worn as ever. His posture was stiff, but there was that same quiet intensity in his eyes. The other was just as imposing, broad-shouldered, his face still marked with the same stoic expression, though his gaze now held something darker. Something more⊠raw.
âRex?â she whispered, unable to believe what she was seeing. She looked at Cody, and her throat tightened as recognition flooded her.
They stood there, like ghosts come to life, wearing the familiar gear of the Republic clones, but now twisted, aged, and worn by time. They were still wearing the armor, but it was scratched, weathered, and battered, not the pristine white she had once known.
âNot the best welcome weâve had, huh?â Rex said, his voice laced with a dry humor she remembered too well, though there was something hesitant in his tone.
Her knees nearly buckled as she stared at him, her heart thumping in her chest. âHowâhow are you here? How are you both here?â she stammered, stepping back slightly, unsure of what to make of it all.
âWe heard a lot of things,â Cody replied, his voice deep and serious. âAbout the kid. About the Empire. We couldnât⊠we couldnât stay away any longer.â
âIs it really you?â she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She didnât want to believe it. Part of her didnât want to face the possibility that this was realâthat they were truly standing there in front of her.
Cody stepped forward, his hand reaching out as if to steady her, but she backed away instinctively.
âI swear, itâs us,â Rex said quietly, watching her carefully. âWeâre still alive, still standing. After all this time⊠we couldnât let you stay alone. Not anymore.â
She swallowed hard, feeling something warm and painful flood her chest. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, but her words caught in her throat.
âHow? What happened?â she asked, finally finding her voice again, but even her tone was filled with disbelief.
Rex and Cody exchanged a look, their expressions heavy. There were so many things they both needed to explainâtoo many things. But neither of them was sure where to start.
âWeâre deserters now,â Cody said flatly. âThe Empire doesnât want us anymore. After what happened⊠after Order 66âŠâ He trailed off, his words thick with the weight of their shared past. âWe couldnât stay loyal to them. Not after all they did. Not after we saw the truth.â
âWe couldnât stand by and let them control us,â Rex added, his voice quieter, filled with regret and guilt. âThe Republic turned into something else. And we both walked away. We couldnât just pretend it didnât happen. We tried to move on, but⊠we couldnât forget you. Or the kid.â
âWhy didnât you come sooner?â she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. âI thought you were⊠I thought you were dead. I mourned both of you. I believed the rumors.â
Codyâs jaw tightened, and Rexâs eyes softened with something like sorrow. âWe had to keep our distance,â Rex said. âWe didnât want to lead anyone to you, especially after what happened. We thought⊠we thought if we stayed hidden long enough, it might be safer for you. But we didnât want to lose you, either.â
She nodded slowly, as if processing everything at once. The shock, the disbelief, the pain. It had been so long. Too long.
âWhy come here now?â she asked, her voice steadying as she wiped the back of her hand across her forehead. âWhatâs the point of all this?â
Rex stepped closer, his gaze intense. âWe just want to be with you. Help. If youâll let us. We canât go back to what we were. But maybe we can move forward, together. The three of us.â
The child, who had been quietly watching from the corner, suddenly walked over, looking up at them with wide eyes. âAre they⊠the ones from before?â
She looked down at the boy and then back at Rex and Cody, a soft, bittersweet smile tugging at her lips. âYes,â she said, her voice quiet but firm. âTheyâre the ones.â
Cody gave a small nod in return, his face unreadable but soft. âAnd weâll do what we can to keep you both safe. If youâll have us.â
The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of their shared past, and the unspoken understanding that nothing was ever going to be the same as it was before. Yet, despite everything, here they wereâalive, standing together once again.
Her heart, which had been a tangled mess for so long, slowly began to settle, and with it, the promise of something new. Something that, despite all the pain and the losses, felt like it could be worth fighting for.
âThen stay,â she said, her voice steady. âStay with me. Stay with us.â
The sun had set on Tatooine, the twin moons casting long shadows across the desert. The familiar, yet bittersweet weight of the night settled over the small mechanic shop, but something was different. There was an unspoken tension, a fragile peace woven through the air.
Inside the shop, the hum of tools and machines was the only sound, the soft whirring of droids as they worked on various repairs. The child, now safely nestled in the corner with a toy in his hands, had grown accustomed to the rhythm of life here, as had she. But tonight was different. Tonight, there was a quiet anticipationâone that stirred within her chest, making her feel both hopeful and uncertain.
Rex and Cody were here, standing by her side in a way they hadnât been before. The space they shared wasnât just that of comrades or soldiersâit was the space of something far more complex, fragile, and yet, somehow, stronger than anything she had known before.

Cody stood by the door, his posture relaxed, though his eyes still carried the weight of everything theyâd all been through. Rex was sitting at the table, his gaze drifting between her and the child, a hint of a smile on his lips. The same quiet intensity lingered in his eyes, but tonight, it felt less like a burden and more like a promise.
She looked at them, her heart catching in her throat. For so long, she had feared she was alone, that the world had moved on without her. She had convinced herself that the bonds they once shared were lost to time, erased by the chaos of the galaxy. But here they were, standing before herânot as clones, not as soldiersâbut as something more. Something that might just survive.
âYou know,â she said, her voice quiet, but firm. âI thought I was done fighting. Done running. I thought the past would always catch up to me.â
Cody tilted his head, his gaze softening. âWe all thought we were done fighting.â
Rex nodded, his expression serious but warm. âBut sometimes, the fight isnât over. Sometimes, we get a chance to do things differently. And weâre here, for whatever comes next.â
She took a deep breath, letting the words sink in. Her heart ached with the weight of everythingâeverything they had lost, everything they had fought for. But as she looked at Rex and Cody, something settled in her chest. She realized that while the war might have shaped them, it didnât define them. They were more than just soldiers, more than just their pasts. They were a part of something new.
The child looked up at her, his bright eyes filled with hope. âAre you going to stay with them now?â
Her heart fluttered, and she nodded, a small smile pulling at her lips. âYes,â she said softly. âIâm going to stay. Weâre all going to stay.â
She turned back to Rex and Cody, her gaze lingering between them. For a moment, the weight of everything they had gone through felt like it was fading. It was still there, lingering in the background, but it no longer defined them. Not anymore. They had a future, one they would build together, in this quiet corner of the galaxy.
The quiet hum of the shop filled the space around them, a steady rhythm that was somehow comforting. They had been through war, through loss, through painâbut here, in this small mechanic shop on a distant desert world, they had found something else. Peace. Hope. And maybe, just maybe, a chance to heal.
As the night stretched on, they sat together, the world outside growing darker and quieter. But inside, there was a warmth that none of them had felt in a long time.
And for the first time in years, she let herself believe that maybe, just maybe, things could be different.
They had survived. Together. And they would continue to, one step at a time.
The future was uncertain, but for once, it didnât matter. What mattered was that they were together. And that was enough.

Hi, idk who's going to see this post or whatnot, but I had a lot of thoughts on a post I reblogged about AI that started to veer off the specific topic of the post, so I wanted to make my own.
Some background on me: I studied Psychology and Computer Science in college several years ago, with an interdisciplinary minor called Cognitive Science that joined the two with philosophy, linguistics, and multiple other fields. The core concept was to study human thinking and learning and its similarities to computer logic, and thus the courses I took touched frequently on learning algorithms, or "AI". This was of course before it became the successor to bitcoin as the next energy hungry grift, to be clear. Since then I've kept up on the topic, and coincidentally, my partner has gone into freelance data model training and correction. So while I'm not an expert, I have a LOT of thoughts on the current issue of AI.
I'll start off by saying that AI isn't a brand new technology, it, more properly known as learning algorithms, has been around in the linguistics, stats, biotech, and computer science worlds for over a decade or two. However, pre-ChatGPT learning algorithms were ground-up designed tools specialized for individual purposes, trained on a very specific data set, to make it as accurate to one thing as possible. Some time ago, data scientists found out that if you have a large enough data set on one specific kind of information, you can get a learning algorithm to become REALLY good at that one thing by giving it lots of feedback on right vs wrong answers. Right and wrong answers are nearly binary, which is exactly how computers are coded, so by implementing the psychological method of operant conditioning, reward and punishment, you can teach a program how to identify and replicate things with incredible accuracy. That's what makes it a good tool.
And a good tool it was and still is. Reverse image search? Learning algorithm based. Complex relationship analysis between words used in the study of language? Often uses learning algorithms to model relationships. Simulations of extinct animal movements and behaviors? Learning algorithms trained on anatomy and physics. So many features of modern technology and science either implement learning algorithms directly into the function or utilize information obtained with the help of complex computer algorithms.
But a tool in the hand of a craftsman can be a weapon in the hand of a murderer. Facial recognition software, drone targeting systems, multiple features of advanced surveillance tech in the world are learning algorithm trained. And even outside of authoritarian violence, learning algorithms in the hands of get-rich-quick minded Silicon Valley tech bro business majors can be used extremely unethically. All AI art programs that exist right now are trained from illegally sourced art scraped from the web, and ChatGPT (and similar derived models) is trained on millions of unconsenting authors' works, be they professional, academic, or personal writing. To people in countries targeted by the US War Machine and artists the world over, these unethical uses of this technology are a major threat.
Further, it's well known now that AI art and especially ChatGPT are MAJOR power-hogs. This, however, is not inherent to learning algorithms / AI, but is rather a product of the size, runtime, and inefficiency of these models. While I don't know much about the efficiency issues of AI "art" programs, as I haven't used any since the days of "imaginary horses" trended and the software was contained to a university server room with a limited training set, I do know that ChatGPT is internally bloated to all hell. Remember what I said about specialization earlier? ChatGPT throws that out the window. Because they want to market ChatGPT as being able to do anything, the people running the model just cram it with as much as they can get their hands on, and yes, much of that is just scraped from the web without the knowledge or consent of those who have published it. So rather than being really good at one thing, the owners of ChatGPT want it to be infinitely good, infinitely knowledgeable, and infinitely running. So the algorithm is never shut off, it's constantly taking inputs and processing outputs with a neural network of unnecessary size.
Now this part is probably going to be controversial, but I genuinely do not care if you use ChatGPT, in specific use cases. I'll get to why in a moment, but first let me clarify what use cases. It is never ethical to use ChatGPT to write papers or published fiction (be it for profit or not); this is why I also fullstop oppose the use of publicly available gen AI in making "art". I say publicly available because, going back to my statement on specific models made for single project use, lighting, shading, and special effects in many 3D animated productions use specially trained learning algorithms to achieve the complex results seen in the finished production. Famously, the Spider-verse films use a specially trained in-house AI to replicate the exact look of comic book shading, using ethically sources examples to build a training set from the ground up, the unfortunately-now-old-fashioned way. The issue with gen AI in written and visual art is that the publicly available, always online algorithms are unethically designed and unethically run, because the decision makers behind them are not restricted enough by laws in place.
So that actually leads into why I don't give a shit if you use ChatGPT if you're not using it as a plagiarism machine. Fact of the matter is, there is no way ChatGPT is going to crumble until legislation comes into effect that illegalizes and cracks down on its practices. The public, free userbase worldwide is such a drop in the bucket of its serverload compared to the real way ChatGPT stays afloat: licensing its models to businesses with monthly subscriptions. I mean this sincerely, based on what little I can find about ChatGPT's corporate subscription model, THAT is the actual lifeline keeping it running the way it is. Individual visitor traffic worldwide could suddenly stop overnight and wouldn't affect ChatGPT's bottom line. So I don't care if you, I, or anyone else uses the website because until the US or EU governments act to explicitly ban ChatGPT and other gen AI business' shady practices, they are all only going to continue to stick around profit from big business contracts. So long as you do not give them money or sing their praises, you aren't doing any actual harm.
If you do insist on using ChatGPT after everything I've said, here's some advice I've gathered from testing the algorithm to avoid misinformation:
If you feel you must use it as a sounding board for figuring out personal mental or physical health problems like I've seen some people doing when they can't afford actual help, do not approach it conversationally in the first person. Speak in the third person as if you are talking about someone else entirely, and exclusively note factual information on observations, symptoms, and diagnoses. This is because where ChatGPT draws its information from depends on the style of writing provided. If you try to be as dry and clinical as possible, and request links to studies, you should get dry and clinical information in return. This approach also serves to divorce yourself mentally from the information discussed, making it less likely you'll latch onto anything. Speaking casually will likely target unprofessional sources.
Do not ask for citations, ask for links to relevant articles. ChatGPT is capable of generating links to actual websites in its database, but if asked to provide citations, it will replicate the structure of academic citations, and will very likely hallucinate at least one piece of information. It also does not help that these citations also will often be for papers not publicly available and will not include links.
ChatGPT is at its core a language association and logical analysis software, so naturally its best purposes are for analyzing written works for tone, summarizing information, and providing examples of programming. It's partially coded in python, so examples of Python and Java code I've tested come out 100% accurate. Complex Google Sheets formulas however are often finicky, as it often struggles with proper nesting orders of formulas.
Expanding off of that, if you think of the software as an input-output machine, you will get best results. Problems that do not have clear input information or clear solutions, such as open ended questions, will often net inconsistent and errant results.
Commands are better than questions when it comes to asking it to do something. If you think of it like programming, then it will respond like programming most of the time.
Most of all, do not engage it as a person. It's not a person, it's just an algorithm that is trained to mimic speech and is coded to respond in courteous, subservient responses. The less you try and get social interaction out of ChatGPT, the less likely it will be to just make shit up because it sounds right.
Anyway, TL;DR:
AI is just a tool and nothing more at its core. It is not synonymous with its worse uses, and is not going to disappear. Its worst offenders will not fold or change until legislation cracks down on it, and we, the majority users of the internet, are not its primary consumer. Use of AI to substitute art (written and visual) with blended up art of others is abhorrent, but use of a freely available algorithm for personal analyticsl use is relatively harmless so long as you aren't paying them.
We need to urge legislators the world over to crack down on the methods these companies are using to obtain their training data, but at the same time people need to understand that this technology IS useful and both can and has been used for good. I urge people to understand that learning algorithms are not one and the same with theft just because the biggest ones available to the public have widely used theft to cut corners. So long as computers continue to exist, algorithmic problem-solving and generative algorithms are going to continue to exist as they are the logical conclusion of increasingly complex computer systems. Let's just make sure the future of the technology is not defined by the way things are now.

Vehicle Manufacturers
Despite there being hundreds if not thousands of vehicle manufacturers, three companies have rose to the top of the Free Market. These are Vermillion Motors, Gogo Incorporated, and Shogun Machines. Despite these three giants of companies dominating the market, they do not stomp out their competition, instead offering to bring them into the fold, these corporations being conglomerates of thousands of others that share a similar design ethos.
Vermillion Motors
Vermillion Motors was founded in 2101, and has withstood the test of time due to the focus on providing a suite of vehicles, tailor-made for the middle class consumer, they have the largest repertoire of vehicle platforms of the big three Vehicle Corporations, having everything from SUVs and Vans to two-seater comfort rides. All at an affordable price, they dominate the market due to building genuine workhorses of vehicles, along with their warranty-period being the longest out of the big three. When possible, Vermillion Motors uses a 'standard' component, which allows Mechanics to service their entire suite of vehicles with only one or two sets of tools.
Gogo Incorporated
Calling all Speed Demons and Thrillseekers, Gogo Incorporated's Mission Statement is "Speed, Speed, and More Speed". They're the frontrunners in performance and horsepower, though the Miles Per Gallon on almost all of their vehicles is the worst in their relative "Class". Hydrogen Gas Stations chitter in glee when they see a Gogo Incorporated Vehicle pull up to their pumps. To account for the fuel-guzzling nature of their motors, the fuel tanks they sport are much larger, resulting in someâŠcombustive results when mixed with their ideal clientele. Despite filling a very specific niche of vehicle manufacturer, they hold a large market share due to Taxi Drivers and racers, among hobbyists and people who just like to see that big number go up.
Shogun Machines
Whether you're a highroller, pimped and preened businessman, or a Limo-Service. Shogun is their name, and Luxury is their game. Shogun advertises to the highest of high class, the 1% of the 1%. They know their Clients can pay their mortgage-sized price tags. Offering bullet-resistant armor plating and glass, among other security features, along with built-in mini-bars and a full fridge. Shogun Machines often find their cars being rented, but even that costs an arm and a leg. Despite this, they have become a household name, a shared dream of those on the lower rungs of the economical ladder.

The magitek armor hunched contemplatively in the darkness like a drowsy bear. This particular bear was of the rearguard model: nearly double the size of the standard type, with two arm-like projectile weapons so massive that they had to rest on the ground when not in use. It was an unwieldy design, made to lumber slowly along the back line and fire from a distance. It was little more than a cannon on legs.
Correction: a cannon on one and a half legs. A faulty joint had taken off a three-pronged "foot," leaving the thing leaning lopsidedly to one side. Such a defect would be complicated to repair on so huge a machine, and the mountainous terrain of the Werlyt countryside likely posed too much of a challenge to move it far. Thus the Garleans, in their haste to follow the shifting front, had parked her in the narrow mouth of a cave, trusting in the natural shelter to keep it from prying eyes when no patrol was nearby.Â
Few would be foolish enough to try to pilfer Garlean property in occupied territory, anyway. Military presence was high, every road crossing the countryside heavily fortified by checkpoints.Â
Two fools they were indeed, one shadow and then another peeling away from the edges of the cave to slip beneath the hulking machine. Eidin hung back for a few breaths, covering her brother's back as he slipped ahead, trusting her to spot any sign of danger well before he could. A gunblade glinted on his back: a prize he'd picked off the corpse of a Garlean officer some years ago. They were well practiced at this routine, and the barely perceptible tilt of his head was all the signal she needed to follow.Â
It had taken nearly a week of scouting and carefully distributed bribes to learn the patrol rotations, giving them a safe window in which to work. Nald'thal willing, their trail would be long cold before anyone noticed the warmachina had been surgically gutted, its innards harvested and already sold off to rebels and pirates.Â
Thuvwilt hesitated beside the crooked magitek armor and gave it a careful shove, testing its stability.Â
"Wilt! Hurry it up!" Eidin hissed at him.Â
"Don't want it rolling over on you," he grumbled. Always the cautious one.Â
Eidin rapped her knuckles against one of the barrel-shaped cannons that rested on the ground. "Look at that thing. A charging aurochs couldn't tip it over."Â Thuvwilt remained silent, which was not unusual. It normally fell to Eidin to do the talking for both of them. "If it starts to tip, I'll steer it against the wall. Or I'll jump. Probably both."
She did have to admit, now that they were actually beneath it, that this was a beast of a machine. They'd dealt with the more common vanguard models before, but she had not quite appreciated until now just how much the rearguard loomed over a person.Â
Still. She'd yet to find a piece of Garlean machinery that could not be taken apart with a common set of tools.Â
Thuvwilt ignored her until he was satisfied that the armor would not tilt with her weight. Only then did he hoist her up, Eidin nimbly stepping up onto his hands before launching herself up the side of the warmachina. It was easy enough for her to find the handholds she needed to reach the latch that was hidden near the cockpit door, and soon she had swung herself into the pilot's seat. Down below, she could already hear Thuvwilt opening up the machine's undercarriage.Â
Many assumed that the magitek core was the only valuable part of Garlean machinery. But the black market had a way of making use of even the mundane bits and pieces that nestled within Imperial tech. Eidin lovingly ran her hand along the console, feeling the glossy buttons beneath her fingers. Oh, it was a beautiful console, so much bigger and more complex than the standard vanguard model allowed. The wiring alone was worth precious gil.Â
This job was going to keep their family fed for months. All they had to do was finish it.

SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINESÂ
Google launched both a core algorithm update and spam updates on March 5, with the spam update ending on the 20th. Core updates now include the Helpful Content algorithm. In early observations, Etsy and Reddit both picked up visibility in the UK.Â
The Helpful Content algorithm updates late last year destroyed a lot of sitesâ Google traffic. Avoid the things they had in common. You can read the full study here.Â
Ecommerce sites were some of the biggest losers in Google visibility in 2023, with Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Etsy, Target and Best Buy in the top 10 of sites whose Google appearances slipped.Â

TikTok
There is an overwhelming amount of info out there on the US attempt to either ban TikTok or force its sale, and much of it is incomplete, so I will let you Google to your heartâs content if you want to learn more. If you are relying on TikTok to drive sales, this would be a good time to make sure you diversify your promotional strategy.Â
You can now track trending terms on TikTok through the Creator Search Insights section. âCreator Search Insights will highlight frequently searched topics, which creators can organize by category (for example, tourism, sports, science) or tailor to their content type with the âFor Youâ option. Additionally, creators can filter for âcontent gapâ topics, which are highly searched but have relatively few videos on TikTok covering them.â
