Your art is SO gorgeous and I’m so jealous of how you have this super clean line art, but then it totally blends in with the final rendering. Do you have any advice on how to do that? I always struggle with that part of adding color.
that’s because in my finished work you’re never seeing my linework unaltered. i put my lineart on multiply and then color it, and then i paint over my lines at the end.

it looks pretty alright
it is rather low poly compared to what i am used to seeing, would add more edge loops around the snout usually in case that was moving around but i am guessing yours doesn't so it's all good. though i would recommend another loop around the wrist
I usually also avoid triangles at all costs, just a thing i was taught, but i don't see it being an issue, and usually it is fine on lower poly models
your elbows might have a bit of a hard time deforming
you kinda want to give it this kinda shape if you want it to bend a lot

so uh. the first case in aa2. i have Thoughts about it and you, my wonderful audience, get to listen to them.
first off, i see that capcom had a pretty big problem to solve in this case: how to introduce the mechanics of the series to any new players while keeping the case interesting to players that are already familiar with the series.
now that’s a pretty hard problem to solve. especially because if you don’t explain the game mechanics well enough, the new players will get confused, but if you go into too much detail in your explanation, the people who are already familiar with the series will be incredibly bored.
and i think it is incredibly hilariously funny that their solution to this problem was “hey what if phoenix got bonked on the head so hard he completely forgot all the details of the case and how to do his job at all”

like. he gets bonked on the head with a fire extinguisher so hard that he completely forgets who he is. lmao.
and it works so well because even though there are crazier things that happen in the first game, this whole situation just has the player sitting there like “hey wait wtf how is he gonna manage to get his way out of this one”
congrats to the devs of this game for making up an innovative way to introduce the tutorial in the second game in a series. also i think it’s very funny that their method is just “give the main character a concussion and some memory loss”
but all jokes aside i thought the case was really well done for a first case in a game and was at just the right difficulty level.
and also my mind is still hung up on the fact that no one in the courtroom managed to catch onto the fact that something was incredibly wrong with phoenix and that hey maybe if he suddenly doesn’t remember who he is or how to do his job at all maaayyyybbeeee they should get this guy to a hospital.
like you’re telling me that the judge looked at phoenix acting like this:

and just went:
“this person i have worked with for almost a year at this point and has managed to solve some nearly impossible to crack cases just suddenly forgot how to be a lawyer entirely. that’s completely normal. nothing out of the ordinary is going on here. we should just continue on with this case, he’ll figure it out eventually.”
also it’s wild to me that phoenix wasn’t injured worse considering the murderer decided to do target practice on him with a large metal object.
this franchise is great so far i love it lolol

hi! i love your art, it's such an inspiration! if it's alright to ask, how many layers do you use + how do you sort them? it's something i struggle with to keep from becoming disorganized
thanks! i do not use layers in a normal/organized way 90% of the time so i do not think my methodology will be hugely useful, but here you go
basically i have a sketch layer and if i ink the piece i have an inking layer. whichever i use for my lines is put on multiply.

then i do underpainting on 1 or more layers depending on how complex the piece is and how much color variation/manipulation i want to do. in this case, i used 4 layers for the basic underpainting

and then i merged all the underpainting into a single layer and made various adjusted versions of that layer (using curves, hue+saturation, and color balance) and masked them to only show where i wanted them to

after that i merge everything into one layer and just paint. but that doesn’t mean i only have one layer after this. as i reach certain milestones (ie painting the armor) or approach something i think will be difficult/that i might struggle with, i duplicate my single merged layer as a way to preserve progress states. there are a LOT of things i completely repainted or redrew in this piece and having these progress states was invaluable.

as part of this reworking stage, i may create a new layer on top to re-sketch a part of the piece i wasn’t happy with, which i will then mask out the unnecessary parts of later.

after i’m happy with where my painting is at, i’ll do a similar thing i did to my underpainting: duplicating and making multiple single-layer versions of my art so i can fiddle around adjusting each one and masking them to just affect the areas i want them to. i also usually end up using a couple adjustment layers like overlay.

and that’s it! it’s a pretty disorganized process and is not the sort of file i would turn in for professional work, but i don’t do client work anymore so i can do whatever i want and the only person who has to deal with my files is me lol

do you recommend calart for international student
hard to say ppl there were friendly & I learned a lot but imo the price is only worth it if you're from like an upper-middle-class-or-above background & won't like, go into life-long debt over it. been almost 8 years since I left so not sure what it's like currently; I mainly miss my classmates & the 'breakfast burrito'
