Hiya everyone! How is everyone feeling?

I've been wanting to get more into old web/internet, skeumorphism and frutiger (again). I've been a bit off of it after I posted about my 3ds on TikTok and started getting some hate for it/people being angry in my comments - overall just very unsavoury and grossed me out a little bit.

I just wanted to share about it, but there is a specific group of people in the nintendo/modding community that has very strong opinions about who has the right to own old consoles and how you should be using them. A lot of it is rooted in misogyny, and a lot of them are very homo-/transphobic, so they're very obsessed with gatekeeping it from these groups in particular.

I think a lot of them are also very young (definitely below 18), but it's still a bit concerning, and it doesn't change the fact that my safe space became a bit tainted by it. Not nearly everyone was being rude, but it doesn't take a lot when people start implying that you shouldn't be alive because you're queer, and into old Nintendo consoles.

But then I remembered: Tumblr!

Overall, the community on Tumblr is far more accepting and tolerant. I think it was silly of me to post on TikTok and expect nobody to be arguing with me or each other in the comments. My other posts on there have had mostly positive feedback however. The frutiger/utopian virtual community is very calm and has a overall very positive vibe, so I can recommend interacting with them. Just keep away from the Nintendo community haha.

TLDR: I posted about my modded 3ds to TikTok and the comments were less than fun to go through, so I wanted to talk about it a bit here. I will probably be spending more time on Tumblr from now on.

LOW ON PRACTICE SKILL STAY CRAPPY DO BAD ART TO MAKE YOU HAPPY

Hey, I'm @dobadarttomakemehappy, a blog to celebrate doing really bad art to make you happy. Specifically, I'm Mod Eris, in case there are other mods on this blog later. You may also know me from @helveticadetector, although I don't promote this blog there at all.

My equipment: Ultramarine Linux, Wacom Intutos drawing tablet from a few years ago that I got used as a gift, sometimes a laptop with a touchscreen. I draw on Krita. I haven't spent a ton of money on art equipment, and am not getting any formal art education or doing art as a career. In fact, I'm a tech major mostly, and I do writing as a hobby, and the typography thing over on Helvetica Detector is a side hobby that stems from that, and this whole art thing is barely something I do at all between all the other stuff. No gatekeeping here. Come on in. (I might post my writing here, though. It's a lot better than my art. Not that bad art is a bad thing - that's the entire point!!!)

I would like to post art to this blog as an excuse to draw badly and regularly, and to gradually improve at art until someday, finally, it stops being bad art while continuing to make me happy. And hopefully you. That would be nice too.

Alright with our winner crowned for the fancomics, time for the main event! The bracket is separated here in to 16 subbrackets (A-P), because the full bracket is massive.

You can find the complete list can be found here. This includes links and the descriptions, exactly as given in the submissions (except when there were multiple submissions, in which case they were combined.)

The bracket was seeded by date of first publication - so the oldest comics (we've got a few from the 90s) are going up against the newest (from just the past few months!), etc. (and if anyone else is insane enough to run a seeded 512 bracket the sheet is automated and you're free to copy it).

this is less a tutorial and more a semi in-depth explanation on my process while taking screenies. my do’s and don’ts about lightning, angles, text/dialogue, close-ups and other!

as a disclaimer, anyone is free to take their screenies however they want and this is just my personal preference and opinions ♡ everything is under the cut! i did say its LONG so dont say i didnt warn u 😳

i use the nobluv2 and noglo mods by luumia! i recommend them 100000%

1. lightning

with its exceptions, this being i’m in a room with candles/chandelier/anything that doesnt naturally produce a white light OR ambiance reasons, my setting with screenies is with the ‘Neutral White’ color. this is for me, more visually appealing than just bathing your sim in yellow light.

i usually test my lightning before i actually take any screenies so my sim is well-lit but also preventing overexposure bc of the lighting. an example of overexposure is when for example the lighting is SO strong, your sim looks like its ‘shining’

you can see it here on her chest highlights, her arm and her cheeks. i exaggerated it here so its more obvious. fixing overexposure is HARDER than upping the brightness in a poor-lit screenshot. overexposure and makin sims look like they are SHINING is a crime. JAIL

the best light ever tbh. just dont get... to carried away

1.2 outdoor lightning

this is one a bit trickier depending on your location but USUALLY your screenies would look well dark. again, test lightning before actually shooting screenies! i generally look for a lamp posts that have good lightning and shrink them down so if im taking angled shots, it doesnt get in the way. change the color to neutral white and if its too much lightning, just lower the dimmer:

in general, you can ZOOM to the max, and with the scroll-wheel zoom out THREE TIMES. four times we on the edge but its still acceptable. five times and you are goin to JAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in general i also recommend having a semi-big room so you can move around without any problems. small rooms DO work but chances are while moving around you’re either going to go outside the room, run into a plant in the shot or into another decor item.

for example, this is a ‘small’ room. while taking photos i have run into the bookshelves for over the shoulder shots like 8000 times. still, doable, but why put myself thru the suffering>?????

2.2 fill the room

nothin sadder than, for example, doing a bedroom scene and there just being...a bed. the game comes with so much clutter and theres also a lot of clutter cc to make rooms seem more ‘lived in’. its also a lot more visually appealing than the room being empty.

3. angles for screenies

my controversial OPINION!!!! i dont care for FULL surroundings shots for more than for a singular panel. THERE I SAID IT!!! usually i show the surroundings/scene setting in ONE panel and then i move on to other angles. again, has exceptions. these being a banquet, party, ball, another sim joins the scene, montages, etc! ANYWHERE that has something happening with multiple people in general.

for example, i don’t see why repeat the same angle with different poses. i can do it for one panel, but for the next ones? there’s the option of over the shoulder shots,  detail shots, them looking at each other shots, cinammon tography shots........... more than likely your reader already has an idea of where your characters are so showing it in every single panel is not necessary.

always try and leave a lil breathin room for the heads on top so it isnt all CRAMPED! but this all depends on the pose, if theres a height difference included in said poses and the angle you are taking the screenshot from!

same thing about not just doing...full on surrounding shots for when something is HAPPENING. say, someone is fainting, collapsing...ANYTHIN!! theres so many shot options than just repeating the same angle over and over again. DONT BE SHY!!!! DO VARIETY !!!

we in photography class now. BUT yes keep these in mind ALSO while taking photos so it isnt just the same angle, same distance just different pose. your sim has a nice outfit? showing it once is enough! every panel? ummmm......... your sim is crying?  do a medium close up/medium shot and not a full body shot!

3.1 close ups

your close ups and ALL screenies in general, don’t have to be FRONTAL only. they can be right/left side, a lil angled...

waist/chest level is a good level for a close-up sim wise since if you ZOOM in too much WELL

4. text/dialogue

i’d recommend any SANS-SERIF fonts. serif fonts are so hard to read even if nice looking. usually a font-size of over 40px+ works and you can add outside stroke and even drop shadow!

i personally use calibri (bold italic) for my screenies, but other subtitle fonts like arial, myriad pro, helvetica...really any sans-serif ones work.

i also wouldn’t recommend putting 4000 word paragraphs in ONE screenie because it’s just visually exhausting. the MAXIMUM i’d do and thats if ABSOLUTELY necessary is FOUR!!!! lines of text. id keep it to three ONLY and thats if your text is the same size as mine. if bigger then two 😳

another no-no for readability is INSIDE stroke or adding bevel/emboss to the text. pick bright, contrasting colors to the background or even clothes your characters are wearing so it’s not hard to read.

something a lil extra i also recommend is if your dialogue has different sentences and one ends and another one starts in the same line, continue it on another line. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE ok lets see:

the “Yes, maybe I went on [...]” continues on the first line, but to make it a bit easier to read just press enter and move it to the second line so it’s on it’s own line.

same thing for the "Be nice or [...]” line! it gets cut off to the third line anyways, so just put it in a singular line. final result:

for me, this is easier to read, less I GUESS ‘immersion breaking’  and easier on the eyes too.

and just other quick things to keep in mind:

will the post be horizontal or vertical? if its vertical, you have to angle and move the camera around keeping in mind you’re going to crop it later. yes, the scenary might be nice if its horizontal, but a lil vertical photo is cute!

best times for OUTDOOR lightning photos are 2pm-4pm. morning light is a bit too dark, 12 pm is the slightest too bright, but 2pm-4pm is just ENOUGH!!!

an intro to: stevie/twyla

hi friends! it's me, sam (@samwhambam)! and I am here to kick off our little intro to series with my personal favorite ship, stevie/twyla.

I still remember watching "Happy Anniversary" for the first time and being fixated on Stevie and Twyla getting high with random townies. I mean, we all know how Stevie gets when she's intoxicated... you can't tell me they didn't make out a little bit.

I love the juxtaposition that their ship provides. Stevie is brimming with dry sarcasm and sass, while Twyla is sunnily optimistic and loving. I love playing with the idea of a relationship between them, the balance and support they'd each provide for the other. They both have so much love for the people in their lives, they're amazing friends, they'd be perfect partners for each other.

They could lean on each other, and understand each other, as their businesses grow. They've grown up together (in my mind) so they understand each other. They would understand the others latchkey bringups and tendencies. I don't know, I just love the ship SO MUCH.

wherever you go, there you are by @helvetica-upstart is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite Stevie/Twyla fics. It's part-AU (maybe more canon divergent?). So you have some canon background, but it turns into an AU when the motel burns down. There's different settings, so it's easy to focus on the Stevie/Twyla aspect and gett your feet wet in it without being overwhelmed by the SC aspect of it.

just make me come unglued by @yourbuttervoicedbeau is one of my absolute favorite post S6 fics ever! If you want to read something that picks up after the show, this is the one.

crystalline knowledge of you by @mymariahcarey is a very sweet little fic that takes place during the season finale. It plays with what is canon and just shifts it a bit. It's great for when you're ready to play with canon and bend it to make space for Stevie/Twyla.

Bears Believing by @treepyful is the perfect fic for if you want a little magic involved. Twyla is a kitchen witch, and Stevie is in love. It's magical and domestic and there's bread.

there's a lot of us, i think we're all all right by @ships-to-sail is a "league of their own" AU that I still think about. This ship works so so well in AUs and the fic is perfectly written. It's a perfect match.

As a bonus, this is my personal favorite of the Stevie/Twyla fics I've written. It's called Everywhere and it's canon divergent where Stevie falls in love with Twyla during Cabaret.

Why did I buy a 3DS and mod it in 2025?

I grew up sharing Nintendo consoles with my older brother and playing with him. The N64, the Gamecube, the Wii, and later on the Wii U: you name it, we got it.

My father had bought the N64 to play Ocarina of Time on it, but he grew out of gaming (so to speak), and my brother took it over. My brother got the Wii for yule one year. Beyond that point, he started paying for his own consoles.

When I turned 7, I got my first ever console that was mine and mine alone: a hot pink DSi (which is still functioning, not modded, 13 years later!). It was a birthday gift. My brother got a dark blue one around the same time.

It was a big deal for me to own a piece of tech all on my own. My neighbours owned DS Lites, and we'd frequently play together when visiting each other.

One day, a friend (who frequently stayed over at my house) revealed something huge: her parents had gotten her and her sister each their own 3DS consoles. When she visited, she'd bring them both, and we'd play them (far beyond bedtime, might I add).

I loved the 3DS, and was soo envious of my friend who got to have multiple while I only had my DSi. I never got a 3DS and forgot about it for a long time.

Until I remembered one day during quarantine; "hey, I could probably get a 3DS at some point soon." But I kept putting it off, and I had other things to be spending my money on.

Then, two years ago, I got really into frutiger aero and utopian virtual. I started this sideblog after a bit, then I decided to play through Spirit Tracks on my DSi, and there it was again, the "itch."

At the start of this year, I had some money left over, and I could finally buy my dream handheld: the Nintendo 3DS. After all these years, I finally had it. I ended up buying the new LL/XL version for the specs, and because my thumbs are prone to cramping when playing with button controls on smaller handhelds.

The decision to mod it was pretty simple. I liked the customisation aspect, as well as the fact that it's a way to keep online play alive after the servers shut down.

(I also collect other physical media, like CDs and Blu-rays/DVDs, and that takes up a big part of my savings.)

I know how happy it would make little me to know that I still love the older Nintendo handhelds and that I finally got my hands on a 3DS after all these years.

If this is part of what it takes for me to enjoy life and keep living, then it's worth it.

I hope this isn’t too insensitive, but this is another reminder that modern internet society is not even remotely equipped to handle people dying. Most people don’t share their passwords with others (in fact we’re taught not to), and password recovery relies on your verifying your identity, so once you die all your accounts and everything on your phone/computer will turn into an inaccessible black box forever. Which is, well, not a great thing for all your friends and family who might want to carry on your legacy, as we’re seeing here.

A brief diversion for mountains:

There are fourteen mountains that rise 8,000 meters or higher. In 1950 a team lead by Maurice Herzog reached the summit of Annapurna 1, the first time humans ever climbed that high. This is not because it’s the easiest of the fourteen: it was shockingly dumb luck and devotion. Annapurna has killed more people than any mountain in history. And yet it’s dearly loved--we just can’t resist that murderously peaceful face in its soft shades of cream and blue.

Dior had that expedition on his mind a few years later when he designed the Annapurna gown, sandstone silk under clouds of sequins cut from mother-of-pearl.

The dress itself is a simple bell skirt falling just below the knee, nipped at the waist, the heavy silk gathered into rough creases at the shoulders and a sharply suggestive but modest neckline. Over it, there’s an open coat with a surprisingly soft shawl collar and yoke, the sleeves joined to the body well in from the point of the shoulder to create a roundness and a very full, imposing, but not architectural or unnatural silhouette.

is a very handsome man.

This is not, like, the only important thing about him, but it has made this one my favorite part of the project. He has a gloriously heart-shaped face and smooth moon profile with that cute nose and cheekbones and eyes framed by crinkles and, lest we forget, great legs.

He’s the only one I would pick to wear Capitals red. He’s the guy the guys talk about as the heart of the team, and I am a sap.

He likes kinda big lines and bold color; I think about one of his 3-piece suits, and his plaids. He himself sometimes goes a bit too complex and crowds out his face--like I said about Holtby, when you have big expressive features they can blur. Negative space makes them more distinct. So I’m looking for a piece by a Native designer in red, with a simple shape, showing those calves. 

After a year, what I’ve decided on is this red hourglass dress with mod white and black accents being modeled by Chilkat weaver and designer Meghann O’Brien. (I can’t tell you a ton about it because O’Brien is an academic fiber artist and, ironically, no fiber artist has ever been a whiz at web design, so I’m having challenges with that part of her blog. Her main work is woven ornaments like the leggings she’s wearing in this picture, which you can find wonderful closeups, process photos, and academic discussion of, if you’re interested in learning more.) The overall shape and shade of red can make it peppy, while the boatneck, slower curves of the detailing, and the important colors of red and white and black can make it more soothing, grounding, and mature. 

As you’ll remember Ovi is wearing this absolute island of over-saturated blue.

I recommend a bold pink lip to bring out the character color as well as draw attention to your mouth (soda’s got a GRIN on him). His brows are very thin, however, a natural bold and feathers brow would better reflect the intensity of his hair color. Don’t be afraid to pair the bold lip with bold eyes! Souda’s clearly got some great eyeliner.

The Look

Souda is FLASHY. He literally argues with Taka about his look. Yes, he’s a mechanic, but he’s a mechanic who wants to impress.

I broke down the mechanic coverall into separates. Bodysuits ensure clean lines and no bunching. For a clean tucked in look. The plain white top and green utility-inspired wear allow the accessories to shine. I noticed that he has a line of red sock peeking out from his shoes, and I wanted to play that up with some red fishnets. The shoes are EVERYTHING, at least imo. If Souda had more confidence in himself he would wear these, bible. Finally, I’ve got you in pink hoops, red sunglasses (to wheeled your eyes when you’re in the shop!) and oc, the iconic beanie. ((the OG beanie doesn’t have the fold over, but I find this style prevents what my friend often refers to as “condom head.”))

If you want to be a lil extra/if you already have some of these pieces/can find them At a goodwill, I would recommend pairing with some pink patches for the back of your jacket to further emphasize that part of the color pallet.
