Meet the Seiyuu: Azul Ashengrotto

Azul’s VA Tamaru Atsushi first became interested in voice acting while studying for university entrance exams, when he would listen to radio shows hosted by voice actors in order to relax. 

He enrolled in a voice actor training academy during his second year in university while majoring in electronics and IT. His thesis was on learning support tools for satellites; he studied at both schools simultaneously. After graduating he was accepted to his first agency through an open audition for aspiring voice actors. 

In an interview Tamaru says that he was the only new actor they accepted who had yet to have a lead role in any project. He says his first job was not voice acting, but for study materials.

I am not sure if this is the same project he mentioned in the interview but I was able to find a 2019 English conversation study guide, “Handsome English Conversation Phrases”, for people studying English as a second language.

In a 2021 interview Tamaru said he can be a perfectionist and struggle if he doesn’t feel he'll be able to do something to perfection.

When he first started out he was very nervous in front of senpai VAs and would obsess over being polite and any bad feedback he received on set.

His voice acting debut was 2009 anime “Kupu~!! Mamegoma!” at age 23. 

Tamaru voiced Kunimi Akira in Haikyuu!!, but actually auditioned for the role of Kageyama Tobio.

In a 2015 interview he said that his hobby is board games and that he enjoys Dominion and Settlers of Catan.

When asked, “What kind of role would you like to try in the future?” in the same 2015 interview Tamaru responded, “It is something I’ve never done before, but I would love to play a villain. I don't think my voice is suited for a villainous role, but I think I might have a chance if it were a colder-looking villain.”

He has had lead roles in 17 different anime series, 25 video games, over 30 drama cds including Jewelpet, Aikatsu!, Meganebu!, The Irregular at Magic High School, The Asterisk War, Seiren, A3!, Gundam Build Divers, I-Chu, Build Divide, Gakuen Heaven 2, Touken Ranbu and more.

Both Tamaru and Floyd’s VA Okamoto voice characters in “Variable Barricade NS”, for the Nintendo Switch, while Tamaru and Jade’s VA Komada voice the lead characters in drama CD, “All Our Love and Youth”.

The first proper trailer for Sonic Prime came out yesterday, as I'm sure you've all heard. I've gotten several messages asking me my thoughts, so... here's some thoughts! Thoughts on how the show's looking, and a certain bat whose presence is somehow the biggest news to me.

First off? This looks phenomenal, visually speaking. I'm kind of in awe of how good the visuals in CGI cartoons are getting. The scenery looks great. The characters move so fluidly. Everything's beautifully lit. I could go on and on. I wish the in-engine game cutscenes had animation half this good.

I continue to be pleased with how slavishly faithful to the games the main universe is - to the point that they're saying this is, in fact, just set in the game universe. Yeah, we're all getting tired of Green Hill Zone, but we've never had a cartoon that was this faithful. The closest we got was Sonic X, which I like, but it's hard to look at any random episode about Sonic having to save the extensive human cast from another generic robot and say it really has the feel of the games. Seeing Sonic and co. fight some classic Badniks in a cartoon with (mostly) their normal designs feels special after all these years of never quite getting that.

That slavish faithfulness to the classic iconography also makes the differences with the multiverse stuff hit harder, and thank GOD they're finally showing some of that. This teaser is pitching it as a show about Sonic meeting alternate timeline versions of his friends who form an underground resistance against the Eggman Empire (funny how the franchise keeps finding itself back in Freedom Fighter territory), which is fun and all. Tall cyborg Amy! A version of Tails who can walk like a spider on a set of robotic kitsune tails! Hell yeah! But if the synopsis blurbs about a "multiverse" and "new worlds" and that pile of leaked concept art from a year and a half ago are anything to go off of, this is presumably only the first of multiple alternate worlds that we'll be seeing. I'm very excited to see more of them!

We also hear a little more from the new voice cast. Brian Drummond is kinda doing his own thing with Eggman. I like it. It sounds compatible with the usual Mike Pollock take without aping it 1:1. He seems maybe a little more sinister here, which fits what we've seen so far from this take on Eggman. And Deven Mack still sounds great as Sonic, although I kind of wonder if he's being instructed to sound like Roger since the delivery in what we've heard so far is pretty similar. I get that desire for consistency, but I hope he's able to inject a bit more of his own spin on Sonic in the full show, even if it's supposed to technically be the same Sonic as Roger's.

Meanwhile, the roles for the rest of the main voice cast have been confirmed elsewhere, and they mostly match up with what I expected because these casting choices just make perfect sense. I already know Shannon Chan-Kent, known primarily for playing Misa in Death Note and Pinkie Pie's singing voice (and Smolder) in MLP, is perfect casting for Amy. Ashleigh Ball's one brief line as Tails sounds a lot like her Rainbow Dash voice, but like... hey, it fits! I'm excited to hear more from her. And Knuckles... well, I don't know his VA as well and also he has no lines in this trailer.

But by now y'all know which characters I stan the most, and you know what I'm gonna be excited about. The big surprise here is the fact that Rouge is on the main cast. The main cast.

The cast posters revealed that she was in the show, which was big enough news, but then the trailer drops and she's on the damn team. Every hero team in a kids' show needs three boys and two girls, and this time they rounded out the group with Rouge. AND she's being voiced by Kazumi Evans, yet another MLP alum on this show - this time Rarity's singing voice and the voice of Adagio Dazzle in Equestria Girls. I don't even need to hear any lines, I know that's another perfect fit.

I'm just shocked. Rouge hasn't been in a TV series in almost two decades since she was kept out of Boom, robbing us of the "Rouge somehow ropes Team Sonic into doing a goofy heist with her" episode the world deserved. Ian's even said that he pitched some ideas for Boom Rouge after being asked to pitch more Boom-ified game characters, but it went nowhere. While she's continued to show up in the comics and (to a lesser extent) the games due to her fan favorite status, it's kind of felt like she was being swept under the rug. Fewer major story appearances than in the '00s, not much merch, it took them until the fifth Mario & Sonic game to make her playable. And she's probably seen as less broadly marketable as a mascot character because of... well, two big reasons.

And so, understandably, Rouge is here with a new outfit that covers those two big reasons up more than usual.

Yeah as a Rouge fan, a person who's talked at length about the fanservice in Archie Sonic, and a sapphic furry artist, I can't avoid talking about this stuff lol

I mostly like the new outfit and think it was a smart call. We can have lots of nuanced discussions about objectification and sexual liberation and the fact that seeing some cleavage isn't gonna kill you and how being the flirty femme fatale is a core part of Rouge's character and whether that's objectifying or empowering and all the other things that get brought up every time a new Bayonetta game comes out. But at the end of the day their main audience is 8-year-olds, and because of that I really can't blame them for dressing Rouge slightly more modestly. I've always loved Rouge as a character the way she already is, but people (particularly non-fans, and also just... Sonic fans who aren't also furries lol) often write her off as "that weird bat lady with the tits that people are really horny for." Hopefully the writing will show non-comic readers that she's a genuinely fun character when used well as a foil to the rest of the cast, and hopefully her new outfit(s) will allow people to focus on that.

I do think something's a little off with the new outfit, though, even if I think it looks solid overall. Is it just that the heart motif is more abstract and less of a central focus here? That might be part of it. Maybe the suit just looks slightly overdesigned next to Team Sonic. Unsurprisingly I've also already seen multiple pieces of fanart giving this outfit a boob window, with one arguing that showing more of her skin tone on her torso gives the design better color balance, and... yeah, on that level I do kinda agree lol. Although I think a similar balance could be achieved just by having her upper arms be exposed or something. (Which is a feature on her bad timeline counterpart's outfit!) But, yeah, overall I do think I like it.

I also don't think they actually made her boobs smaller compared to most of her modern appearances despite the many, many, MANY claims to the contrary but I am not getting into that debate lol. Also she's literally still wearing a skintight catsuit and doing cool flying kicks you are not allowed to say they made her less hot

The fact that they're putting Rouge front and center has me VERY curious about her future prospects in the movie universe, though, given the particular projects currently in the works. To me, this makes it seem WAY more likely than it previously did. But who knows?

Uhhh anyway yeah the show looks good. I like pretty much everything we've seen so far. I like basically all of the previous Sonic cartoons except Underground to some extent, but if they stick the landing with this one then it seems like it'll pretty easily be the best one. I guess it's kinda lame that they made Sonic say "gotta go fast" in the trailer, but idk, it's a modern Sonic project, they gotta pay the obligatory lame meme toll. I am mostly fixated on Rouge because she's one of my favorite characters and her being on the main team is somehow the biggest curveball this show's previews have thrown so far, like seriously what.

Storia Di Musica #266 - Dead Can Dance, Aion, 1990

La copertina del disco di oggi, della serie di lavori che riprendono capolavori del Rinascimento, è un particolare de Il Trittico Del Giardino Delle Delizie di  Hieronymus Bosch, dipinto probabilmente tra il 1490 e il 1510 dal maestro nederlandese, conservato oggi al Museo Del Prado di Madrid. Il particolare è della sezione centrale, sulla Vita nel Giardino. A sceglierlo per quello che è il loro disco capolavoro sono stati un gruppo australiano, i Dead Can Dance. Si formano a Melbourne alla fine degli anni ‘70, e si ispirano alla new wave britannica di quei giorni e alle sonorità post-punk. Sono in quattro all’inizio: Paul Erikson al basso, Lisa Gerrard alla voce, Simon Monroe alla chitarra e alla batteria e Brendan Perry alla voce e alla seconda chitarra. Pubblicano un singolo, nell’agosto del 1981, The Fatal Impact, che esce in una compilation di una rivista specializzata, Fast Forward. Visto il successo scarso, decidono di andare a Londra. Partecipano al progetto This Mortal Coil, poi nel 1985 il primo disco notevole, Spleen And Ideal, in cui introducono archi, fiati, armonie che si rifanno alla musica gotica, contenuti mistici che troppo velocemente diventano “new age”, e da qui inizia un piccolo seguito di culto per la band, che è diventata ormai un duo Gerrard\Perry, compagni anche nella vita. Si trasferiscono in Irlanda, e lì compongono il primo capolavoro: The Serpent’s Egg (1988) è ancora più etereo e sognante, e un brano, The Host Of Seraphim, verrà usato a più riprese in documentari, trailer, altri brani addirittura campionati (The Chemical Brothers che usano un sample di Song Of Sophia per la loro Song To The Siren, nel loro disco Exit Planet Dust del 1995). Succede però che i due si separino come coppia, con la Gerrard che rimane in Irlanda e inizia a studiare le lingue slave, Perry che va in Spagna. Ma il loro binomio artistico continua, e le esperienze personali sono alla base del disco di oggi, il loro capolavoro. Lo intitolano Aion, una parola greca che vuol dire “forza vitale”, e nella mitologia greca è il tempo infinito, del susseguirsi delle ere, ma anche il tempo vitale e il destino a differenza di Chronos che è il Dio del tempo degli eventi, delle ritualità. Composto da 12 brani spettacolari, ha decine di influenze. Solo due brani sono in inglese, Black Sun e Fortune Presents Gifts Not According To The Book, il cui testo è una traduzione di alcune liriche del poeta spagnolo barocco del diciassettesimo secolo Luis de Góngora. Si aggiungono melodie medioevali e rinascimentali, strumenti antichi come la ghironda o la viola da gamba, sono capaci di creare una musica che sembra un gioco di aria e acqua nella breve ma stupenda The Garden Of Zephirus, polifonie vocali nella toccante Wilderness, i ritmi da mercato arabo della conclusiva Radharc, la ripresa di un Saltarello, una melodia tipica del Centro Italia Rinascimentale, ma su tutto domina la voce, da brividi, della Gerrard, che con naturalezza canta una glossolalia fatta di parole greche, latine, arabe, bulgare, gaeliche che sembrano una misteriosa nuova lingua nella spettacolare apertura del disco, The Arrival And The Reunion, accompagnata dal soprano maschile David Navarro Sust. Alcuni strumentali sono eccezionali e rimandano al tempo del dipinto di copertina, come Mephisto e la stupenda As The Bell Rings The Maypole Spins (il Maypole Spin è molto simile All’Intreccio delle tradizioni folkoristiche nostrale legate al Carnevale, e consiste nell’intrecciare serie di nastri colorati, seguendo un ballo ritmico, ad un palo). Ma il colpo da maestro è la ripresa di una canzone tradizionale mediterranea, The Song Of The Sybil, conosciuta soprattutto nel sud della Spagna come El Canto De La Sibilla e ad Alghero: canzone di genere apocalittico che la tradizione fa risalire addirittura a Eusebio da Cesarea, che scrisse, secondo Sant’Agostino, una Iudicii Signum, che il teologo da Ippona tradusse dal greco al latino nella sua Città Di Dio. I Dead Can Dance ne riprendono la versione in catalano, che è uno dei momenti clou delle celebrazioni della natività in molte zone della Spagna: qui la Gerrad sfoggia tutta la natura dolorosa del canto, in una prova vocale da brividi e indimenticabile. Il disco è acclamato dalla critica e rimane uno dei picchi di creatività di una band che toccherà il massimo successo con Into The Labyrinth (1993), che venderà 500 mila copie, record per un disco della 4AD. Rimangono un ascolto necessario, per la delicatezza delle scelte e la magia della loro musica, da assaporare con il tempo necessario per un viaggio spazio temporale, almeno ad occhi chiusi.

My expectations for ‘My Adventures with Superman’

DC has just put out a teaser trailer for the new and upcoming ‘My Adventures with Superman’ animated show.

There’s not a lot to talk about with this trailer since it is just a sixteen second clip. I will say that the animation looks a bit janky, but that could be fixed as time goes on.

I have high hopes for this show. While characters like Spider-Man and Batman have had multiple animated shows in the past few years, Superman hasn’t received the same amount of love. The last time he had an animated show that focused specifically on him and his world was in the 90s. It’s time for Superman to get more attention and this show could be the perfect gateway for casual fans to  get into the character and his stories.

I immediately fell in love with these character designs. Superman/Clark Kent looks pretty much exactly the way I picture him in my mind. Aside from these pictures and the trailer, there’s not a lot of information about the show. However, I would like to share my hopes and expectations for this show as a superhero and Superman fan. Here’s what I would love to see in “My Adventures with Superman :

1. A strong focus on the romance

Based on the interviews done by the writers and voice actors for the show, there is going to be a strong emphasis on the love story between Clark and Lois. I think that this is the perfect approach for a new Superman show. While there’s a lot of people that love to make think pieces on how Superman is “unrelatable”, there is absolutely nothing that humanizes Superman more than than his relationship with Lois. I would like this show to focus on the classic love triangle aspect of the romance with Lois Lane in love with Superman while overlooking Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent who is himself in love with Lois Lane. In the past few years, Superman stories have de-emphasized this aspect. Movies like Man of Steel and shows like Superman and Lois like to skip the love triangle aspect so that they can quickly jump to Clark and Lois already being in a relationship, however, the love triangle aspect is very important to the dynamic between Lois and Clark, and I would love for the show to bring that idea back to the fore-front. At the same time, I do not want the love triangle to be the status quo for the majority of the show. The 90s Superman Animated Series had this problem, where there was basically no progression with the relationship between Clark and Lois until the literal final episode because the writers were obligated to keep up the status quo of Lois never discovering Clark’s secret identity. You can keep that dynamic for maybe the first season of the new Superman show, but eventually the relationship has to move forward and be developed in order for it to be interesting.

2. A fresh,new take on Superman’s villains

This one is a no-brainer. Superman‘s villains tend to be underdeveloped in both movies and other DC shows with most stories basically only focusing on Lex Luthor. However, Luthor isn’t the only interesting Superman villain as there are several other villain who could serve as entertaining and interesting characters in their own right. While the show could take inspiration from the comics, it wouldn’t hurt the show to have its own unique takes and designs on characters like Metallo, Bizarro, Brainiac, Mxyzptlk, etc.

3. The introduction of Superfamily characters

In the comic books, there are a bunch of characters who have taken inspiration from Superman and have become superheroes who adopt the “S”-symbol, much like Superman. Obviously, it might be a bit too soon to introduce characters like Jon Kent, the son of Lois and Clark, but I would like to see 'My Adventures with Superman’ come up with their own interpretations of characters like John Henry Irons, an engineer who built a suit of armor that replicates some of Superman’s powers and who goes by the name of Steel, or even Kenan Kong, an Asian hero who was given superpowers by a unique variant of Kryptonite, and who became the Super-Man of China.

4. A strong focus on Superman’s flaws and struggles

Let’s get this out of the way - Superman isn’t perfect. One of the most interesting aspects of the character is that he tends to be somewhat of a loner. Clark Kent always felt different because of his alien heritage and his powers. He always feared that he would never be able to fit in, never really be considered “one of us”. That right there is one of the most universally relatable aspects of the character. How many us have felt this way ? That we could never fit in and find a sense of belonging ? We do not know what it is like to be a alien with extraordinary powers, but we do know what it’s like to be different.. Superman’s relatability comes from his feelings of loneliness, his tendency to keep people at a distance because he is terrified to letting them in and truly seeing him from what he is. There’s also Superman’s feelings of inadequacy - how he feels like he could never truly live up to people’s expectations of him as a hero and his fears that he isn’t doing enough to help as many people as he can.

Those are all aspects of the character that “My Adventures with Superman” can focus on to flesh out the character.

5. A willingness to try new things

The 90s Superman Animated Series was good for its time, but it had its flaws. One of the biggest flaws of that show, in my opinion, is that it played it very safe when it came to adapting Superman and his mythos. It had a very grounded and realistic take on many of the characters and the concepts, which is not always a good thing since Superman stories shouldn’t be afraid of taking inspiration from some of the more bizarre, out-there and just flat out weird aspects of Superman comics.’My Adventures with Superman’ shouldn’t be afraid of trying new things and coming with entirely unique takes on all of the characters of the Superman comics. It would be interesting to see ‘My Adventures with Superman’ invent new characters, maybe add some new villains for Superman’s rogues gallery or even invent new worlds and planets for Superman to explore.

Those are some, but not all of my hopes and expectations for this show. I really want this show to succeed because frankly Superman could use a boost in popularity. Let’s hope that the show lives up to the hype.

Meet the Seiyuu: Silver

Silver’s VA Shimazaki Nobunaga first became interested in voice acting in elementary school after being inspired by Lilia's VA Midorikawa's performance as Heero Yuy in New Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.

In Twst, he voices Midorikawa’s adopted son.

Today is his birthday!

He was made it to the final round of a talent agency talent search competition at 17 years old but did not win, choosing to go into dentistry upon graduating from high school. Six months into his studies he decided to instead pursue his dream of voice acting and reached the final round of another series of agency auditions, but was once again not selected.

In 2008 he enrolled in a voice actor training academy, and his voice acting debut came a year later as Herbert Nielsen in Valkyria Chronicles for the Playstation 3. He won a Best New Actor award in 2013 and an award for Best Supporting Actor in 2021. 

Since 2009 he has had lead roles in over 80 anime series and OVAs, 50 video games and 40 drama CDs. A few of his more notable roles include Haruka Nanase in Free!, Shinichi Izumi in Parasyte, Fujimaru Ritsuka in Fate/Grand Order, Eugeo in Sword Art Online, Yuki Sohma in Fruits Basket (2019) and Fuji Tsukasa in Your Name.

- Même si je n'aime ce nouveau régime au moins  le monde est plus sûr. L'avantage c'est que Papillon n'est pas resté longtemps à terroriser Paris et à part nous deux personnes s'en souvient. Tout le monde pense que c'est une illusion collective. Il y a de forte chance que Superman soit mon père.

- Comment peux-tu en être si sûre ?

- Nous allons à un endroit appelé "Le Mausolée" où un tube-zéta nous attend. Il sera enlevé une fois que tu sera installée.

- D'accord. Durant le trajet je ne parle pas et regarde le paysage défiler sous mes yeux. Jusqu'à arrivée au porte de la Villette.

Une fois téléporté dans ma nouvelle demeure, ça va être étrange de vivre dans l'espace. Je pense que je ne me laisserai jamais de la beauté de la vue. Je n'ai pas essayé de me battre je sais très bien que je ne pourrai pas gagné et personne peut refuser un ordre su nouveau dirigeant

- Marinette tu m'écoute ? Je rougis jusqu'au oreilles.

- Je t'amène voir ta nouvelle chambre. Je viendrai te chercher pour que tu puisses rencontrer mère, nous mangerons ensemble et apprendrons à faire connaissance.

Je le suis docilement et ignore les regards sur moi. Il s'arrête devant une porte.

- Ici sera ta nouvelle chambre. Celle d'en face est celle de ta mère et moi.

- Merci. Il me laisse seule. J'ai envie de hurler et de retourner à Paris. Je me sentais comme une prisonnière. J'ai pu voir toutes les caméras. Heureusement il n'y en a pas dans la chambre. Je me doute que les autres héros rapportent mes moindre faits et gestes à l'homme. Je ne l'appellerai jamais père ou papa de bon cœur.

Après un temps indéfini. Il vient me chercher. Je rencontre ma mère pour la première fois. Je dois l'admettre je suis son portrait cracher. La seule différence hormis l'âge, c'est que mes cheveux sont plus clairs. Durant le repas je m'efforce de sourire. J'évoque ma passion pour la mode et le désigne. Je n'évoque à aucun moment ma vie de super-héroïne. Au fur et à mesure de l'échange je me détends comme le fait Brianna. J'étais contente de rencontrer la personne qui m'a donné naissance. Je sais que m'habituer à tout ça prendrait longtemps. Il ne faut pas oublier que je dois toujours faire mon deuil.
