The U.S.A wants to increase the birthrate, but doesn't want to put forth any type of policy that would make the lives of mothers better. These politicians just want to shame and force women into pregnancy.
I have a federal job and my job has absolutely the worst maternity leave. It's basically non-existent. 6 weeks of non pay leave. Usually women at my job have to use up their Annual Leave and Sick Leave, if they want to be paid.
Most jobs in America actually punish working mothers. Jobs literally threaten to fire women if they take days off for their sick child or if they have to leave early to pick them up from school. My first job at 16, I witnessed this. A coworker was calling around to different family members in hopes that one of them could pick her son up from school, because the manager wouldn't let her leave to get him. She was unable to find someone, so her son spent over 3 hrs after school, just waiting. The school contacted CPS on her and she was literally investigated because she was late picking her child up.
Yet men are able to completely walk away from any responsibilities of a child. I have seen men have to pay $300 a month in child support and these men even claim that is too much. I have seen women who have stepped in the traditional role, be screwed over by their cheating husbands and the court system.
As a millennial, I have witnessed first hand how our society basically hates working mothers, single mothers and even stay at home mothers. So why would I even want to put myself in that category. From what I have witnessed, your life becomes 10x harder after having a child.

I love talking to my mom. She helps me realize that no matter what happens, life goes on. She has lived so many lives, just like me. It's surprising to hear the things to continues to tell me about her life. I love her. I love me. I can't believe I'm here now. I used to want to be nothing like her, yet I realize I am more like her in more ways than I want to admit. I've stolen from her. I've hurt her. I've lied to her. I can't believe I would ever do that.
Yet, here I am. I've missed the feeling of keys under my fingers. I've missed this feeling of connection with myself. I'm missing this feeling of being just me. Now, I am a mother. Now, I am proud to be a mother. It's the best "title" I've ever held, and I find myself longing for the feeling of just being "me." But, maybe I need to retire that old self, and realize that this is the new version of being me.
It is an honor to take on this new role. It's also terrifying to know I'll never be the able-to-get-fucked-up-whenever-I-want-to person that I was before. In ways, I miss that part of me. In other ways, I'm thankful I can be past those behaviors of mine.
Here's to a new future with my almost 5 month old daughter.

I understood that my body no longer defined the outer perimeter of my being. There was a part of me that occupied a space in the world that wasn’t contiguous with my physical self. We would forever inhabit each other’s orbit, held together by gravity, love and other unforeseen forces.
