New Product Development Solutions for an F&B Major- A Quantzig Case Study
Revolutionary solutions for food and beverage manufacturers
Where do new product development solutions appear? Catering companies must constantly launch new products and innovate existing products to meet changing customer preferences. Changes in customer preferences happen faster than the F&B product development cycle, causing many newly launched products to fail. Therefore, players in the F&B industry need new digital tools such as big data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) for the predictive development of F&B products.
Other industries, such as pharmaceuticals, have gained significant momentum with the adoption of AI-powered analytics to discover drugs and accelerate new drug development. However, the F&B sector is still in the early stages of utilizing these digital tools.
F&B customer challenges
Our client, a large Asian catering company based in India, has been experiencing a steady decline in beverage sales for years. The customer turned to Quantig to understand how different customer groups perceive the taste of beverages. He also wanted help developing a new customer-preferred flavor in his target market. Our client wanted to use accurate data-driven insights to develop new revenue-generating beverages.
NPD solutions for food and beverage
Our analysts used AI tools to sift through the vast amount of data generated through surveys, focus groups and taste groups to identify new beverage tastes. As part of this project, our analysts focused on the beverage flavors preferred by consumers in the 10-60 age group.
First, based on the taste profiles of consumers in India, we developed a benchmark for the commercial performance of existing flavors. We analyzed and rated 36 flavor attributes on an intensity scale from 0 to 5, and assigned each flavor an expected Perceived Quality (PQ) score. Flavors that received a rating of 4 or more were considered competitive in the marketplace.
to take away
Identified and adapted to the rapidly changing consumer tastes
Using AI tools in NPD processes for accurate data-driven insights
Analysis and classification of 36 aroma attributes on an intensity scale from 0 to 5 to produce aromas likely to be competitive in regional markets
A new flavor combination was explored that did not previously exist in the Indian market

Engineer in the Boardroom.
Sometimes it is best to keep quiet and say nothing.
I was working for a really interesting company. I had started with them years before and had some inventions and patents which they claimed ownership of. I was the creative engineering and R&D guy. I was also expert in government and industry regulations.
The company had been making a product line under license. It had become a big part of the business. The owner of that license was not responding to inquiries about renewal which was due in a few months. The purpose of the license was to have patent protection. We all believed that the patent was weak, but lawsuits are a bitch so it is best to be able to threaten people with "we have a patent."
So it was decided we would design a new line of products from scratch. The patent was weak, but a clause in the license let us do custom work and that was not expiring. I was familiar with regulations to do with Handicap Access and safety and things of that nature, so I put my hand up for that. I also said I would do some structural calculations so we could make sure they stood up on their own. The master design job was taken on by our "architectural group". I put quotes around that as they were technically landscape architects. They designed parks and drew very nice renderings of stuff. They usually worked with marketing to promote sales. They knew buildings and structures were useful but not how to build them.
Here was the ideal marketing and architectural cooperative combination. The sales guys took their best selling old system modules and asked for new sketches and plans and renderings. They had a lot of fun. I was occasionally brought in to comment on applicable regulations and a few tweaks. You can't do that, but try this sort of thing. It was going really well. My goal was to keep an eye on what was happening for when it all went bad. I knew it would, they missed a part.
I had spent years sticking my nose unasked in places to help when I saw a problem. I made some enemies. That is one reason I studied those regulations and later actually contributed to developing new ones. When I got actively involved many people took it negatively. Yes I invented this and that and we won awards, but.... For this I was holding back. Still involved but waiting for the train wreck.
This situation is not unusual. Basically people in charge not knowing what was required to get something done. We had a factory that was set up to build things from steel and fiberglass for kids to play on. It used a large set of hand drawn pieces that assembled into structures. Without drawings they can't build anything. One thing that license provided was a dozen binders full of sketches.
A deadline was set for when the new system would be complete and ready to start building. The shop manager and I both knew that a lot of drawings were needed to do that. We were the only ones I guess and we both kept quiet. If we had piped up we would have been seen as not team players. Everyone is happy no negatives, don't say no.
There was a big meeting in the boardroom I was there the shop manager was there, marketing was there, the architects were there with a lovely set of drawings and renderings of the "New" system. The partners in the firm were all there. There was also the chief draftsman and his sidekick who was still learning his new 3D cad system. I had been using a different one for several years to design molds and new products and parts. I also did computer renderings which was rather new back then. I did not get along with those two guys.
The new designs were passed around. There was the air of triumph in the room. This is great, that is wonderful. Marketing and the architects beamed with pride. I looked at the shop manager and he at me. The president who was also the majority stock holder was very pleased. This is great. Then he asked the shop manager how soon can you start making these? He said; "I can't make anything."
There was a sudden change in atmosphere.
He leaned back and said; "I can't build from these sketches. I need shop drawings with dimensions and details. I need parts lists. These are pretty pictures." The President then looked at the draftsmen. "OK how long will it take to get shop drawings for these units." The sidekick replied "I will have to look at it."
President said; "You are looking at it!"
This guy with the new 3D cad system had been copying the hand written sketches for the old system into CAD for a few months. He was pretty slow, but as his boss was his buddy there was no pressure. He looked at the smallest unit and relating it to his progress he said; "I can do one unit in 6 months."
"That's not good enough we need work in the shop now. The sales people are starting to sell this stuff. Go downstairs, put your heads together and come up with a better schedule." That concluded the meeting. I had said nothing the whole time. The train was fully off the rails.
The shop manager was called over to the partners. Is there anything you can do? "I need fabrication drawings. The smallest old unit had a dozen pages of parts. Here I have one pretty picture with only a few dimensions. No there is nothing I can do or anyone in my shop."
Talk about a bummer.
Previously I would have jumped in well before and taken the whole thing on myself. But I had learned that is not wise and actually hurts long term. I went back to my desk and got back to my usual work. Actually I had done a bit of CAD work on some parts to check the forces and loads. So I had a start on it.
Two days later one of the partners asked to see me. "Well that was a disaster" he said. "Apparently the improved shop drawing schedule is 4 months for the first unit and one unit per month after that."
I nodded;" Sounds about right for him."
"Can you do better?"
"Yes give me three people, and three more seats of my CAD system. I will train them to operate it and put out the first unit in 8 weeks."
"You have been thinking about this?"
"Of course. I've had a few days"
Cutting to the chase I did better. I set up the team trained them and had the first unit done in six weeks and the entire catalog in 4 months. In six months the first few units were installed and we had designed a custom giant unit with 50,000 pounds of steel in it. The new product line was a hit.
I would not have been given permission to do anything had I not waited to be asked. The people who would have been given the job had to fail to clear the way.
So the moral of the story is sometimes its best to shut the F up.

💖💋🥂IT GIRL ERA 2024💖💋🥂
Tumblr media
💋1) Start putting yourself first . Choose yourself Put your own needs and wants first. What do they advice in flight ? First put your oxygen mask and then try to put others oxygen masks. It is not about oxygen masks.
💖2) Get a social media detox. Social media can be very toxic. We often get into fights with strangers or see toxic people in the comment section or compare ourselves with others. Get off Tumblr , Instagram , Facebook etc. It will help you alot.
🥂3)Get rid of victim mentality. Victim mentality can make things worse for you. You aren't a victim of your reality , you are the creator of your reality. Start taking responsibility and control of your life .
💋4) Believe in yourself . Like Elle Woods said , " most importantly you must have faith in yourself." You must have unwavering faith in yourself . It doesn't matter if others perceive you as less , make sure you don't perceive yourself as less. Your opinion of yourself matters the most.
🥂5) Start taking care of yourself. Self care will save you . Always put your self care first. Go to gym or workout at home. Do skincare. Take care of your hair. Get a mini hair spa. Self care will increase your energy and lower your stress levels. It will boost your self-esteem too.
💖6) Create a vision board. You can make vision board on Pinterest or make one in real life. Just make sure it inspires you and reminds you of your goals. Vision boards are very powerful tool.
💋7) Stop focusing on others. Focus on you. Don't think good or bad about anyone . Be focused on how you can make yourself better. If you don't get time to think about others , good ! Focus on yourself. Except the ones who are close to you , you shouldn't think about others or compare yourself . Just focus on how you can get ahead and make yourself better. I hope this made sense.
🥂8) Love yourself. Self love will save you. Listen , write or speak affirmations. Adopt the IDAF mindset , stop caring about others opinions. Don't compare yourself with others. Let go of toxic cycles and people. Be kind to yourself.
💖9) Remember what Jang Wonyoung said ? I DON'T CARE. YOU ARE YOU , I AM ME . ADOPT THIS MENTALITY. Enter your wonyoungism era !! Wonyoung said that if it's something she didn't do , then she doesn't care. That's where her iconic statement " you are you I am me " came from . Start being okay with people misunderstanding you. Don't try to explain yourself and waste your energy.
💋10) Give importance to your education . Education is the most powerful weapon. Read books. Watch documentaries. Study to learn , not just for good grades.
🥂11) Value your time. Realize how important your present moment is. Don't waste time on unproductive things. Do things that your future self will thank you for . Don't do things that your future self will curse you for.
💖12) Have different role models for different things. Let's say for developing a strong mindset , you can look upto Song Jia , Wonyoung or The wizard liz and for academics , you can look upto Hermione Granger , Elle Woods or Rory Gilmore .
💋13) Stop fighting with stupid people. Even strangers online ! Honestly , strangers online can be very toxic , annoying and stupid. Don't waste your energy arguing with stupid people or people who aren't willing to understand or listen .
💖14) Stop looking yourself through the lens of your past self. It's okay if you made some mistakes . Mistakes are the proof that you are trying. Forgive yourself and learn from them. Stop putting yourself down and keep those mistakes as a lesson. Yes you made some mistakes but after those mistakes , you learnt and made yourself better.
🥂15) No more self- depreciating humor. Your mind doesn't know the difference between reality , fiction or a joke.
💖💋🥂This advice is very basic and simple. But this advice will help you alot. Don't just read this post , make sure you follow this. Happy new year !!! 💖💋🥂
