ok this sounds insane but in 2018 i went to a few carnivorous plant talks at the botany conference in minnesota. i got caught up in conversation with one of the guys there who was a huge nepenthes guy who told me a story about another collector in the pacific northwest who'd been buying poached plants, like a huge amount, and eventually got staked out by the fish and wildlife service and arrested and had all his plants seized and went to prison for it. idk if i ever talked about this on this blog before-- i know i liveblogged a lot from that conference but cant remember what all i posted-- but ive avoided talking about it since then because i was never able to find like, news articles or anything covering it, but behold.... we now have proof it was real, and im like 80% sure this was this guy he was talking about. the raid happened in 2016 and they'd been staking them out since 2013. he had nearly 400 plants and had been sourcing many of them from poachers in indonesia and borneo.
remember folks: poaching happens with plants too! it's a huge problem not only in carnvirous plants (nepenthes especially, which this piece is dedicated to talking about) but also in native plant populations in the US, including native carnivorous plant populations (north and south carolina's venus fly traps, california's darlingtonia, and sarracenia from the east coast), native orchids (historically one of the most poached categories), desert plants/cacti/succulents, and slow-growing woody ornamentals (cycads, for example). never buy bare-root plants off ebay or facebook! your best bet is local nurseries (which usually purchase farm-raised plants that do well in a wide range of conditions, and as a result have a healthy population in the wild) or specialty greenhouses (more expensive, but at least in the case of carnivorous plants offer young plants bred from established adult plants in-house, raised in captivity).

which streaming service has the most vintage movies? If you don't know, maybe your followers could answer? 🙏
Ooh hoo hoo you asked and I'll answer!!
I actually made a post like this for the hot men tournament, but I can't find it now so I'll do it again from scratch. The short answer is that I don't know of any one streaming service that has all the old vintage movies—but most streaming services have a "classics" genre category that can get you started. Here's a small selection of what you can find on different streaming services:
TUBI (free):
The Adventures of Robin Hood (Olivia de Havilland)
A Streetcar Named Desire (Vivien Leigh)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Jane Powell, Julie Newmar)
North by Northwest (Eva Marie Saint)
The Music Man (Shirley Jones)
The Women (Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, Joan Crawford, Joan Fontaine, Paulette Goddard, several other hotties in small parts)
The Philadelphia Story (Katharine Hepburn, Ruth Hussey)
Notorious (Ingrid Bergman)
Bell, Book, and Candle (Kim Novak, Elsa Lanchester)
The Talk of the Town (Jean Arthur)
Dark Victory (Bette Davis)
Stray Dog (Keiko Awaji)
Some Like It Hot (Marilyn Monroe)
Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (Sophia Loren)
Dirty Girtie From Harlem USA (Francine Everett)
Passport (Madhubala)
Dark Passage (Lauren Bacall)
Sepia Cinderella (Sheila Guyse)
On The Town (Ann Miller, Vera-Ellen, Betty Garrett)
The Bandwagon (Cyd Charisse)
Devar (Sharmila Tagore)
Reet-Petite and Gone (June Richmond)
The Postman Always Rings Twice (Lana Turner)
KANOPY (free through some libraries):
Dial M for Murder (Grace Kelly)
His Girl Friday (Rosalind Russell)
Ball of Fire (Barbara Stanwyck)
Black Orpheus (Marpessa Dawn)
Flower Drum Song (Reiko Sato, Nancy Kwan, Miyoshi Umeki)
Marriage Italian Style (Sophia Loren)
The Rose Tattoo (Anna Magnani)
Tokyo Story (Setsuko Hara)
War and Peace (Audrey Hepburn, Anita Ekberg)
Salt of the Earth (Rosaura Revueltas)
Metropolis (Brigitte Helm)
The Red Shoes (Moira Shearer)
HOOPLA (free through some libraries):
The Court Jester (Angela Lansbury, Glynis Johns)
Sunset Boulevard (Gloria Swanson)
A Place in the Sun (Elizabeth Taylor)
Barefoot in the Park (Jane Fonda)
The Barefoot Contessa (Ava Gardner)
Wings (Clara Bow)
YOUTUBE (has a lot of older movies that have slipped through copyright/are still up for some reason):
Charade (Audrey Hepburn)
Story Weather (Lena Horne)
Gilda (Rita Hayworth)
Rebecca (Joan Fontaine)
This entire playlist of Indian cinema that I just found (Madhubala, Waheeda Rehman, Nargis, Meena Kumari, etc.)
And that's just a small sample. There is also always your local library for physical DVDs, the Internet Archive, and....other methods.....if you know exactly what you're looking for.
I haven't seen all of these movies, so don't consider them personal recommendations—these are just famous movies with our hotties in them, so please be careful if you have content warnings. Good luck and have fun!
EDIT 5/16: Added a few more movies to the different sections, but this is still just a small selection of what the different streaming services have. Good luck!

Chapter 16: Executive Orders
After Bradley threatened to steal an Air Force One plane, it was like a fire was lit under Dante and the rest of the security team. Units were immediately moved. Boots would be on the ground in twelve hours, and forces would move in in less than twenty-four.
Bradley, Maverick, Penny, Jake, and Jaycee were on a plane to North Carolina. Bradley was on the phone with Nat and the rest of the Dagger Squad the entire time. He briefed them on how important this mission was and how they were there for air support and surveillance.
They all assured Bradley that they would do whatever it took to get you back.
After coordinating with local law enforcement, a command center was set up just outside the property line of the farm Preston has brought.
At 0700 hours, the Dagger Squad led by Captain Trace departed from the U.S.S. Bush in Virginia.
At 0900 hours, Phoenix made contact with Maverick, who, even though he wasn't flying, still wanted to be a part of the mission. He was corridinating from the ground along with Bradley.
"Mav, everything seems to be clear. There are no signs of movement around the perimeter. Daggers Two and Three, do you confirm?" Phoenix says.
"Confirm Dagger One. No signs of moment to the north." Coyote says. "South is clear too, Cap." Payback." Echos. "Copy that, Daggers. SEAL team Alpha, you are clear to move in from the north. Bravo team move in from the south. Air coverage will let you know if anything changes." Maverick radios.
Bradley grips the arms of the chair he is sitting in. "Mav—" He breaths out. "What if we're too late?"
"Bradley, stop. You can't think like that. She's going to be okay." Mav tries to comfort him.
"Sir. Some of us are going in behind the SEAL teams to provide support. We'll let you know as soon as the First Lady is secure." Dante tells Bradley.
"I want to go with you, Dante. I need to be there." Bradley urges. "Mr. President. With all due respect, we don't know what is waiting for us in that house. We don't know if the Baxter brothers are armed. I can not allow you to go. You need to stay here. It's safer." Dante says.
"Dante, do you enjoy being the head of the secret service?" Bradley asks him.
"Yes, sir." Dante responds.
"Would you like to continue to be the head of the secret service?" Bradley asks him. Dante nods.
"Do you think you can continue to be the head of the secret service if you tell me no, Dante?" Bradley states. Dante doesn't respond.
"I'm going with you. I'm the president, and I'm not asking you for permission, I'm telling you what I'm going to do." Bradley tells him.
Dante looks past him to Maverick, who just shakes his head. "Fine. But you need to stay in the SUV, sir." Dante sighs before the two of them exit.
Maverick continues to listen in to the Daggers flying above. "Maverick, there is movement in the northwest sector. Make sure the Alpha team is advised." Bob radios in. "Copy Bob. Alpha team, be advised there is movement on your left flank." Maverick relays the information.
"Copy that Admiral." The leader of the team replies.
"Alpha team, you are still clear for breech, but stay vigilant." Maverick warns them.
"No signs of moment near Bravo team, Mav." Fanboy states.
"Copy that Dagger Three. Bravo team be ready in case they try to escape in your direction." Maverick commands.
"Copy that, sir. Bravo team is ready."
"Sir, we have eyes on the building. The surrounding area is clear. Are we a go for extraction?" The captain of the Alpha team asks. Maverick sends up a silent prayer and plea to Goose and Carole before speaking. "You are a go for extraction."
....................
The sound of a door bursting and shouting jolts you awake. Voices fill the house, and you aren't sure what's going on. You're disoriented from the mental and physical torture Preston has been putting you through. You barely register him, uncuffing you and dragging you towards the door of the room. Once your mind catches up to the fact that your body is free, you attempt to fight him off. You claw and slap and punch at him, ignoring the pain in your limbs. But you're weak, and your effort seems useless.
A bright flash and a loud bang stun you. Your ears are ringing as white spots cloud your vision. You don't register the sea of uniformed men and women who fill the small room.
You're vaguely aware that they are yelling. Soon, a strong pair of arms wraps around you, and the adrenaline kicks in. You're determined to break free. You struggle like a crazied animal until they grab your shoulders and force you to look at them.
"Ma'am, my name is Lieutenant Xander Finley with the U.S. Navy SEALs. We are here to take you home." The young officer tells you. "H—home?" You stutter out, afraid this is some sick delusion your mind has concocted.
"Yes, Ma'am. You're safe now." He assures you. You collapse against his chest and cry as he and others escort you out. "Admiral Mitchell. We have her, sir. We've got the First Lady." Lieutenant Finley calls into his radio.
Maverick lets out the breath he has been holding and cheers. "Daggers, we have her." He tells the pilots who cheer.
He grabs the other radio and calls into. "Rooster, Mr. President, this is Maverick. Do you copy?" He asks.
"I copy Mav." Bradley says into the radio he has been holding onto for the past half hour as he waits for news. "They have her, Bradley. They've got your girl." Maverick smiles as he realys the news to Bradley.
"Thank you." Is all Bradley can manage to say as tears fill his eyes.
Dante and the rest of the secret service team are waiting with guns drawn. An ambulance is parked close by with a medical team in standby. No one knows what shape you're in.
Bradley exits the vehicle as the first SEALs start to make their way down the dirt road. He stands beside Dante, waiting to catch a glimpse of you.
He holds his breath as more uniforms emerge. They all seem in good spirits.
Then, it happens. He sees you. Two SEALs are helping you walk. Bradley breaks out into a sprint towards you, ignoring the yells of the people around him. He doesn't care. It's been eighteen days, twelve hours, and thirty-six minutes since he's held you in his arms. He doesn't want to was another second.
"Sweetheart." He gasps as he wraps his arms around you, holding you close to him. He let's go of the sob he was holding in as he feverishly kissed your hair. His large arms hold you snug to him, as his scent and fills your nostrils, enveloping you in a sense of safety and comfort.
"Bradley, Dearest." You mumble against his chest as you bury your face into him and cry.
Bradley held you close to his chest as you sobbed. He kissed the top of your head and stroked your hair as his arms tightened around you.
You pulled back to look at him. He cupped your face in his hands. You didn't miss the tick in his jaw as he took stock of you.
You were bloody and bruised and broken. His heart ached for you, knowing that you must be in so much pain right now. But through it all, you smiled at him. He smiled back at you, but it quickly faded as he caught sight of two members of the SEAL team escorting Preston towards your location.
"You piece of shit!" Bradley screamed as he released you and ran towards Preston. The men holding onto him didn't know what to do as Bradley charged at them. The jump from his side just as Bradley's fist made contact with the other man's face and knocked him to the ground.
"You fucking bastard!" Bradley raged as jumped on top of Preston and delivered blow after blow to his face. Everyone stood there frozen as they watched the scene unfold. No one was sure what to do, and no one moved to stop him.
"You son of a bitch! You tried to take her from me! You tried to take my everything from me!" Bradley screamed.
Bradley continued to hit Preston over and over again. He didn't stop when he heard the crunch of his nose breaking. He didn't stop when his knuckles were bruised and bloody. He didn't stop when Preston was no longer struggling to fight him off. He didn't stop when Maverick and Jake tried to pull him off because they were afraid Bradley would kill him.
He only stopped when you called out his name and grabbed his arm. You looked at him with tearful eyes. "Bradley—he's not worth it." You whispered.
Bradley sighed and shook his head. He knew you were right. He looked at the people who were around him before locking eyes with the captain of the SEAL teams. "Mr. President, sir, as far as I'm concerned, we didn't see anything. Mr. Baxter sustained these injuries as a result of resisting arrest and attempting to flee the scene. Everyone here agrees." The man speaks while others nodded their heads. "I wanted to let you know that Alexander Baxter surrendered peacefully and is willing to cooperate with us." He finished. Bradley nodded and thanked him for his efforts.
He quickly helped you over to the EMTs who were waiting for you. Bradley held your hand as they assessed and treated you. Maverick came over to comfort both of you. He offered you the radio that was connected to the Dagger Squad. Each of them cheered when they heard your voice, and you told them they were clear to head home. Bradley phoned Jake and Jaycee, who were waiting back at the makeshift headquarters and let them know you were alive and being transported to the nearest hospital.
He held your hand and whispered how brave and smart and strong you were the whole time. He looped his fingers with yours, and you placed both of them on your stomach. You shared a silent understanding and worry. Neither of you said anything, but you both knew what news could be waiting for you once you arrived at the hospital.
.....................
You felt like you had been waiting for hours once you were admitted to the hospital. They quickly set your broken fingers and broke arm that you had acquired. They treated the wounds on your face and iced it to help with the swelling. They also had to stich a laceration near your hairline. You would be able to hide it with your hair, but you joked with Bradley that the two of you would have matching face scars.
You were given more fluids because of dehydration and a liquid nutrition cocktail. Several vials of blood were drawn from you. Everything came back normal for you and your baby, but an obstetrician was needed to confirm
Soon, Dr. Fraser came in to perform an ultrasound and an exam. You and Bradley held your breath as you were waiting for something, anything to appear on that screen.
"Ah, right there. Do you see? There's Baby Bradshaw." Dr. Fraser smiled before clicking a few things and turning a dial. Soon, the whooshing sound of a heartbeat filled the room.
"Heartbeat is nice and strong. Baby seems to be in good shape, all things considered. You're measuring about twelve weeks and a few days, which puts you due around late January or early February. We'll know know for sure in a few more weeks." The doctor tells you.
You and Bradley breathe a sigh of relief as the doctor exits and gives the two of you some privacy.
"I'm so glad we—I got you back. Both of you. You're my everything, Sweetheart. I don't know what I would have done if I had lost you." He says as he rests his hand on your belly. You grab his hand and bring his bruised knuckles to your lips and kiss them.
"You need to have someone look at these." You tell him. He rolls his eyes and tells you'll that he'll be fine.
You let out a yawn, and the overwhelming feeling of exhaustion fills your body. You're tired and weak, but you're terrified to close your eyes. Afraid that this is a dream and that if you fall asleep, Bradley will be gone when you wake up.
As if he can hear your thoughts, Bradley says. "Sleep, my love. I'll be right here when you wake up." He assures you. Another yawn escapes you as your eyelids become heavy. Bradley strokes your forehead as sleepover takes you.
He sits in the hospital room and watches the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe. He sends up a silent thank you to whatever higher power it was that brought you and his child back to him. He also thanks his mom and dad because he knows that Goose and Carole were definitely watching over you.
He lets out the breath he has been holding as he squeezes your hand. He takes your rings out of his pocket. He'd put them in there when you'd gotten to the hospital. He slipped them back on your fingers. His thumb traces over the bands as he thinks to himself that the two of you really are better together.
The long awaited rescue is here! Hope you guys enjoy it!

on this day in 1854, able seaman thomas morgan of the hms investigator died of scurvy and tuberculosis at the age of 33. having been a sailor since the age of six(?!), he was a posthumous recipient of the arctic medal— as was everyone who searched for the northwest passage and/or sir john franklin between the years of 1818 and 1855.
Tumblr media
his troubles began in march 1852 when he had a tumor removed by the ship's doctor, alexander armstrong (the above excerpt is from armstrong's very thorough account of the expedition, which is online here), and he spent the next 118 days under medical observation. his illnesses and maladies continued, and by the end of his life, he was so weak he had to be carried on a makeshift cot on a dog sledge.
he died may 22 1854 and was buried four days later on beechey island with torrington, hartnell, and braine. ship's carpenter ford made his coffin, and captain robert mcclure performed the service. the next week, the crew of the hms investigator moved on.
(for more on the hms investigator, "ice ghosts" by paul watson has quite a bit on them and the rescue operation to find them. also check out dr armstrong's personal narrative, which is soooo detailed, and "discovering the north-west passage" by glenn stein. one of the more interesting franklin rescue operations imo!)

[ 📹 Scenes from En Neccar Hospital after Zionist air forces bombarded the Al-Siyamat neighborhood of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, killing four Palestinian civilians, including at least on child, and wounding a number of others.]
🇮🇱⚔️🇵🇸 🚀🚀🏘️💥🚑 🚨
SIX NEW MASSACRES OVERNIGHT ON DAY 174 OF "ISRAEL'S" CONTINUED GENOCIDE IN THE GAZA STRIP
On the 174th day of "Israel's" ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) committed a total of 6 new massacres of Palestinian families, resulting in the deaths of at least 62 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and wounded another 91 others over the previous 24-hours.
According to sources with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), the Israeli occupation released seven kidnapped personnel, held in detention for the last 47 days after the occupation army arrested them during the raid on Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Yunis, in the south of Gaza, including the Director of Ambulance and Emergency Services for Gaza, Mohammed Abu Musabeh. The Israeli occupation continues to hold in detention eight other members of PRCS crews who's fate remains unknown at this time.
Sources with PRCS also said they transported the bodies of two martyrs from Al-Nuseirat Refugee Camp, north of Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, after being targeted by Israeli artillery shelling.
Local medical sources also reported the deaths of four civilians, and several others wounded, after Zionist artillery forces shelled central and southern Gaza.
In yet another atrocity committed by the Zionist occupation army, witnesses reported six civilians were killed while waiting for humanitarian aid in the Gaza Industrial Zone, east of Gaza City, after being targeted by occupation bullets and artillery shelling.
IOF warplanes also bombed an electrical appliances center in the Jabalia Refugee Camp, in the north of Gaza, causing a fire to break out.
Due to "Israel's" starvation campaign in the Gaza Strip, medical sources say 12 patients died as a result of malnutrition and dehydration, in conjunction with a lack of proper medical care and medicines, at Al-Shifa Medical Complex in the Al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, during the 11 day siege of the hospital.
Occupation fighter jets also bombarded several residential homes in the Al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, while also bombing a building on Hamid Street in the Al-Shati Camp, west of Gaza City, resulting in a number of casualties.
Similarly, Zionist Merkava tanks fired shells in the vicinity of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, west of Gaza City, while another civilian was martyred as a result of being directly targeted by occupation forces in Hamad Town, north of Khan Yunis, in the south of Gaza.
Israeli occupation warplanes also bombarded with intense firebelts the city of Khan Yunis, while simultaneously shelling various neighborhoods in the north of the Palestinian enclave.
Zionist aircraft also bombed the city of Beit Lahia, in the northern Gaza Strip, near the Al-Qassam Mosque, wounding dozens of civilians.
Occupation fighter jets also launched firebelts targeting the town of Al-Isra, northwest of the Al-Nuseirat Refugee Camp.
Previously, Zionist occupation forces bombed the Ajor Family home, west of Gaza City, killing eight civilians, including women and children, and wounding several others.
Occupation airstrikes also targeted residential neighborhoods in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City, martyring seven civilians and wounding a number of others.
In another occupation strike, Zionist warplanes bombed the Committees responsible for securing aid in the north of Gaza, in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, killing four officials.
Meanwhile, Zionist fighter jets bombarded a residential home in the Al-Beltaji Street in the Al-Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, resulting in the martyrdom of three Palestinians and wounding at least 20 others, while intense shelling by occupation forces also occurred of the Al-Muznar residential building, killing a number of Palestinians.
The Israeli occupation army also kidnapped and detained 8 aid truck drivers after returning from the northern Gaza Strip to distribute humanitarian aid.
At the same time, Zionist artillery detatchments shelled the Al-Saraya area and Al-Nasr Street in Gaza City.
In the central Gaza Strip, intermittent bombing and shelling of the Al-Bureij Refugee Camp killed at least five civilians, while two others were martyred after occupation air forces bombed the neighboring Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp.
Similarly, a woman and her young daughter were killed after IOF warplanes bombed the town of Al-Zawaida, in the central Gaza Strip.
Elsewhere, occupation aircraft raided the city of Rafah twice, killing 15 civilians and wounding dozens of others, while four were killed after after IOF air forces bombed an agricultural greenhouse adjacent to a center for displaced civilian families near the Shaboura Camp, in central Rafah.
As a result of "Israel's" ongoing war of genocide in the Gaza Strip, the infinitely rising death toll has now exceeded 32'552 Palestinians martyred, more than 25'000 of which being women and children according to the United States Pentagon, while another 74'980 civilians have been wounded since the start of the current round of Zionist aggression beginning on October 7th, 2023.

"Two inter-city bus routes on Vancouver Island that connect Victoria, Nanaimo and Tofino, British Columbia with dozens of municipalities and First Nations are being suspended this week.
Wilson's Transportation, the private company that manages the Vancouver Island Connector and Tofino bus lines, said it can't afford to keep running at a loss when ridership drops significantly in the period after the holidays and before the summer.
After Tuesday's trips, the two bus routes will be suspended until May, President and CEO John Wilson said, adding the company plans to make a permanent shift to seasonal operations between May and October.
"October, November, right through up to the end of April is a tough time for the numbers on the bus," Wilson told On the Island host Gregor Craigie. "We wind up subsidizing the service ... and post pandemic we just can't afford to do that any more."
He also said his business lost a lot of revenue during the pandemic and the government funds that helped had all been spent.
In a statement, the transportation ministry said it understands post-pandemic travel patterns made things difficult for private transportation providers, but that inter-city bus companies across B.C. received more than $6 million in grants in 2021.
Vancouverite Tina Akland said the regional bus line is an essential service. She was catching a bus from Nanaimo to Port Alberni, about 110 km north and 200 km northwest of Victoria respectively, to be with family on Monday because her father died recently. Now, she's not sure how she'll be getting back.
"This is a life link," she told CBC, while fighting back tears. "And when I have to see my family later in the year to deal with the details of my dad's passing, I just don't know how I'm going to do it.""

Regarding the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America
Tumblr media
By now I think just about everyone in the American Shinto community is aware that the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is closing. From a post by Olivia Bernkastel on The Facebook group Shinto, Religion of the Forest, I got a little more of the story. The bottom line regarding Reverand Berrish is that his health is deteriorating. He will not be fully retiring but he is moving to Florida where he hopes to set up an independent shrine. If I were to dare to speculate, it seems to me the warm waters of Florida are far more preferable for Misogi than the Glacial waters of the Pacific Northwest. And if that's part of his reasoning I don't blame him one bit.
Now, it's important to note that if he wants to set up an independent shrine he can do that. From what I am to understand he is enshrining the entirety of the Earth rather than setting up a shrine for any of the more recognized Kami. One would think he'd stick with the Kami he has served. But that's his choice. He can do what he wants. In truth, historical examples of how shrines were started indicate that pretty much anyone can establish a shrine if they have the means to do so. Legitimacy comes with longevity.
In regards to the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America, it's reported that there was a proposal put to the Board members of the shrine to look for a new priest. I do not know why they made the decision they did, but as we are all aware by now it was decided to close the facility and word is that they plan to sell the property. This does not mean that there will be no Tsubaki shrine in North America. In the future, the Shin Mei Spiritual Centre near Victoria, B.C., a branch of Tsubaki Grand Shrine Japan will be providing Shinto services, Ofuda, and Omamori. If I were to dare to speculate it might be that the Shintai at the Tsubaki Grand Shrine may be moved to this location along with other sacred items. (Seems to me the logical thing to do, but what do I know.) The downside is we've no way to know because there has been little information forthcoming.
The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America Board of Directors has posted an open letter on their website, and while it is confirmation it leaves many questions unanswered.
Important Announcement
FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that we will be closing Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America on June 30, 2023.
First, may we express our deepest gratitude to Rev. and Mrs. Barrish for their many years of dedication and for sharing the profound practice of Shinto with thousands of members and visitors for over 20 years. At this time, however, they will be retiring due to health reasons.
Next, we are so very grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who have helped support Tsubaki America shrine activities over the years. Please continue to keep the kamisama in your hearts and in your daily activities.
June 25, 2023 we will conduct Nagoshi no Oharahi (Mid Year Great Purification). This will be our final public ceremony at Tsubaki America, and we welcome all Members to attend this celebration.
Additionally, Shin Mei Spiritual Centre near Victoria, B.C., a branch of Tsubaki Grand Shrine Japan, is active and continues to welcome visitors (www.shinmei.ca) for gokitoh kigansai. Omamori and kamidana items from Tsubaki Grand Shrine Japan will continue to be available through Shin Mei.

Brian Stelter at The New Republic:
The crackdown could begin with a security breach at the Northwest Gate of the White House.
Imagine, on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, a raucous protest by left-wing groups on the streets north of Lafayette Park. The blocks surrounding the White House are cordoned off with layer after layer of fencing, due to the unrest in major cities following Trump’s reelection, but a few dozen very motivated activists barrel through the park, all the way across the inauguration parade route along the park’s southern edge, and inside the White House perimeter. Weapons are drawn, emergency plans are activated, and Trump is rushed to a deep underground bunker. Order is restored within minutes, but not before the break-in is shown live around the world, since all the major networks have live camera positions on the North Lawn. Online sleuths notice that a few of the protesters appear to be wearing press credentials. (They’re fakes, it turns out.) And in one stray live shot that gets clipped and decontextualized and shared all across pro-MAGA social media, a CBS correspondent gives a water bottle to a man screaming in agony after being pepper-sprayed. That’s all it takes for a narrative to take root on the right: “The media is complicit. They’re in on it. THEY are trying to assassinate OUR president.”
Trump feels humiliated and attacked on what is supposed to be his most triumphant day. He and his aides want what he famously promised: “Retribution.” Knowing that the Northwest Gate is a key access point for journalists, a White House aide starts a rumor that the assailants were aided by CNN and CBS News crews. Trump, who is glued to the live coverage, grunts to his chief of staff, “Get them off my lawn.” Members of his inner circle, so fed up with years of accountability journalism, and so deluded into thinking that Trump’s way is the only way, see a chance to go further and squeeze independent media off the airwaves. “Get out,” they say. “Get out of our way.”
The security breach becomes a pretext for a project that’s been on the minds of MAGA leaders for years. After all, Steve Bannon’s 2018 promise to “flood the zone with shit” was just the beginning. Trump’s “enemy of the people” proclamation gave permission to his fans to go further—to delegitimize and dehumanize journalists and make “alternative facts” the only facts. For the coup plotters of 2020, one lesson of Trump’s loss was that Trump needed to exert more control over the media in order to prevail. He needed to own the media; ergo, Truth Social, which emerged in the aftermath of January 6. The far right’s memory-holing of the attack, minimization of the violence, and rebranding of rioters as “hostages” were successful tests of MAGA media’s reality-rewriting capabilities.
Trump’s violent rhetoric emboldened his devotees. During the Biden years, pro-Trump trolls daydreamed that, once back in power, they would imprison journalists and crush opponents, and they were welcomed to say so on Elon Musk’s X. As an ex-CNN anchor, I saw it in my mentions when MAGA diehards fantasized about having me locked up at Guantánamo Bay: “Gitmo is in your future.” “You filthy nazi traitor demokkkrats belong in GITMO.” “All of you deserve to be jailed.” Anonymous threats were accompanied by brash promises by Trump loyalists. “We will go out and find the conspirators not just in government, but in the media,” former Defense Department official Kash Patel told Bannon in 2023. “We’re going to come after you,” Patel proclaimed, “whether it’s criminally or civilly.” Bannon, overjoyed, said, “We’re absolutely dead serious.”
Imagine that the new administration uses the Northwest Gate incursion as a pretext to impose severe restrictions. Most reporters are banned from entering the White House grounds, per new Secret Service rules that cite threats to the president’s life. As Truth Social fills up with memes equating journalists with “terrorists,” networks are given 24 hours to remove their equipment. Aides claim that reporters will be able to ask questions via Zoom at virtual press conferences, but Trump refused to hold daily briefings during his first term in office, and the Zoom sessions never materialize. Media outlets file First Amendment lawsuits seeking a return to pre–Trump II norms, but the government’s claims about security threats take precedence, and the bans remain in place. Press corps norms—like traveling with the president—melt away. Trump begins to take trips without any notice to the public at all. Several reporters who resort to staking out Andrews Air Force Base and watching for Air Force One takeoffs are arrested for trespassing.
Fox and Newsmax are allowed on the White House grounds, so officials can claim that “real” news is still represented. Fox says it will provide the other networks with live video of all presidential events and remarks. While workers revert the former press briefing room to the indoor pool it was decades ago, Trump rewards Fox with interviews and promotions—at one point doubling the Murdoch family’s market cap in a matter of weeks—and even the hosts who are most tempted to dissent are kept in check by the sudden windfall. And they know that, for the MAGA faithful, Newsmax is always one remote click away; they learned that the hard way in 2020. So they toe the line, touting specious rumors about enemies within, about writers feeding “resistance” tips to foreign governments, about liberal editors doctoring photos of Trump to make him look even older than he really is, about treasonous reporters aiding the protesters on Inauguration Day. “Remember when THEY tried to kill Trump?” becomes a rallying cry on the right, even though it didn’t happen.
Fact-checks about what did happen only embolden Trump’s fans to fight harder for punishment of the imagined co-conspirators. CBS says the doxing of its phone and computer networks becomes so intense that the newsroom can barely function for hours at a time. One night, the evening newscast starts 10 minutes late due to server glitches. A Trump spokesman is quoted calling this a “good start,” meaning the country would be better off with no evening newscast at all. Two days later, in a “swatting” incident, a caller to 911 claims there is a violent intruder inside the home of a top CBS anchor. Police arrive en masse, and, amid the chaos, an officer accidentally shoots the anchor’s wife, seriously injuring her. The same MAGA-heads on social media downplay the violence by digging up the victim’s past tweets praising Hillary Clinton; some even parrot the Trump spokesman and call the injury “a good start.”
Inspired by Trump’s words in the bunker on Inauguration Day, “get out” becomes shorthand for a groundswell of anti-media sentiment, mirroring the Trump administration’s militarized mass deportations of migrants. “If you journalists don’t love our America,” they say, “get out.” At the federal level, Trump appointees pull the levers of government to implement the president’s wishes. IRS agents commence audits of top newsroom editors. (The editors find that it’s almost impossible to prove the audits are retaliatory.) DOJ attorneys consider Espionage Act charges against adversarial reporters. FCC commissioners open probes into the conduct of broadcast station owners who don’t follow the Trump line. Republican lawmakers, themselves intimidated by the voters who are calling reporters “terrorists,” prepare a media accreditation law that would reward outlets that maintain close ties to the government. Third-party groups flood the courts with libel lawsuits against news outlets. Judges will eventually throw out most of the suits, but each case costs time and money to fight, and the twofold intent is to make the newsrooms bleed out financially, and to frighten others from pursuing the same types of stories.
Brian Stelter wrote in The New Republic as part of its American Fascism series that the freedom of the press could be severely curtailed if Donald Trump gets elected again.
