Sorry for the fast writing, but when it comes to it, basically was trying to get through most of the main stuff from at least memory and study of a whole library ton of books, at least 17,000 books at most. Not all of them have what one may be looking for, but a library full is worth at least half a decade full of information that is worth knowing and worth reading as well as study the properties and proper parts of things almost long forgotten. Especially that which although is very much a small piece of the Magicks and Magical Realms, Sorcery it self is one of the arts that still holds at least 16,000 years worth of information and at least 15,000 members originally, however it now stands at 300 per year and roughly half a decade worth of books still intact, originals included . With that being said, very little as 12 per month study and succeed, but with that in mind the majority of which happen to find themselves stuck in their original paths for about a year or two, tend towards finding and focusing on larger areas of magic in which they’re definitely less familiar with but that eventually helps and them become Arcanum Level And Masters of The Grand Arcane Arts. Of which there happens to only every 18 years for at most 4 per year of members of magical study.

Hey hey!
Do you like fantasy, intricately twined stories, and magic? My friend over at Bisset House Press is looking for ARC readers! If you have the time and like the premise (pasted below), please don't hesitate to sign up! I'm posting on tumblr for them because they currently don't have one haha.
Two teenagers on the secretive Island of Faodail have finally joined the ranks of their predecessors: they’ve begun to have dreams of their past life. This is a natural cycle on the Isle that Katiyana has been waiting for ever since she turned sixteen the previous April. Having been raised in the Coven, she knows exactly what’s happening. Vincent, however, does not. He was raised outside of the circle of magic users, and is bewildered by every new piece of information these sequential dreams drop on him. As the month passes, they slowly put together that they’re dreaming of each other. With the help of their mutual friends, and Coven members who have already been through the process, the teens work through revelations both comforting and terrifying. Everything does happen for a reason, especially on Faodail, they just never expected it to be like this. Coven Chronicles: Magickal is an introduction to the Island of Faodail, through the lens of someone steeped in its history and magic, and someone learning everything for the first time. This dual-POV story will lead you through each dream and everything surrounding it, unfolding the past Katiyana and Vincent shared together, and the future they could build with each other.

L.S. Dunes - April 14, 2025 - Union Stage in DC April 21, 2025
Tumblr media
This is my tenth article about L.S. Dunes since the start of this publication, and there’s a reason for that–they’re an absolute blast to see live. This evening I attended a Dunes headlining show at Union Stage in DC, which also featured support bands From Indian Lakes and Night Sins. Union Stage is a super cool 450-capacity venue, and their ground floor is a bar with the stage located downstairs in the basement. I wasn’t sure if there would be a photo pit or not, as I was told there wouldn’t be a barricade, just a roped off area on the side of the venue that photographers could use, but when I arrived there was in fact a barricade with a decent sized pit between the crowd and the stage.
For L.S. Dunes, this tour is a celebration of their latest album, Violet, and it truly is a beautiful record. I highly recommend giving it a listen if you haven’t already. Dunes toured with Rise Against in the UK and Europe earlier this year (read about that tour here), but this is their first headlining tour in a minute so I was super excited. I even got VIP for the occasion! (see Bonus Features at the end of the article to get the scoop on that situation). I’ll get more into the details as we go, but for now I’ll just say that this was truly one of the most magical (or should I say, magickal) shows I’ve been to.
L.S. Dunes
Tumblr media
As I’ve said, this is my tenth time seeing L.S. Dunes, but it also may have been my favorite. All of their shows that I’ve been to have been great, but this one was electric, and I know part of that has to do with the way the space was arranged, as well as the energy that the audience brought to the show. I don’t know how else to describe it other than the room simply erupted on the transition from Like Magick to Fatal Deluxe, their first two songs on the setlist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anthony Green (vocalist) was jumping back and forth between the stage and the barricade for the first three songs, which was a lot of fun to photograph. There was just so much energy transferring between the performers, who were playing their hearts out, and the audience, who were screaming along to the lyrics, crowdsurfing, and opening up mosh pits left, right, and center. Anthony stated between songs that the vibes of the crowd were “perfecto” and he thanked DC for being such a great audience a few times throughout the night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m so grateful to be existing in the same timeline as this band. I’m a fan of the members’ other projects (My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive, Saosin, Thursday), but there’s just something so special about being able to see them all together, playing these types of venues. It feels more personal in a way, like we’ve been invited into a sacred space they've created, and we shouldn’t take that invitation for granted. If you're looking for a night of truly cathartic fun, go to an L.S. Dunes show. You can find tickets to the rest of L.S. Dunes’ “Like Magick” tour here.

Bonus Features!
Welcome to Bonus Features! Thanks for reading this far. So, for the VIP experience on this stop of the tour there were only about 25 of us or so, which is a big change from the last time I did VIP for Dunes two years ago (read about that here). Included in our VIP package was early entry + merch access, signed Dunes-branded moleskine notebooks, a moderated Q&A session with the band, and a group photo.
Tumblr media
The way the Q&A worked was different from the last time I did it where people were called on and handed a microphone. This time, Hayley Rippy (the tour manager for Dunes on this run) came down the line of us before we went into the venue and had us scan a QR code that took us to a google form. There, we were able to put in our information and submit a question. Hayley read the questions off to the guys during the Q&A, which I think was a good call since she was able to do a little bit of filtering that way.
After the VIP experience was done, both Frank Iero and Anthony Green took some time to mingle with the crowd before the show. Frank spoke to a few people at the barricade for a couple of minutes before heading backstage, but I think Anthony spoke to nearly everyone who was there in the VIP group, myself included. He took photos with people, signed things, and spent time chatting with anyone who had something they wanted to tell him. He didn’t have to do that, but he did, and I thought that was really sweet :)
Thanks, Anthony!

I recently have been getting back into divination and witchcraft as a means to try and unpack my rampant religious trauma. It’s been… a struggle to say the least. Some days are better than others, some days I get filled with an intense anxiety that maybe the god of my old religion will turn my life to hell for even daring to consider anything else.
But I now that’s not true; and that along with so many other ideas are so unhealthy.
That little dissertation out of the way; here’s a list of things I did recently that I’m proud of myself for doing. Cause we all need to be proud of ourselves from time to time; especially when dealing with trauma:
• Number one biggest thing! I’ve started doing shadow work! I’ve started to work through identifying my different triggers and it’s challenging to say the least. While I won’t get into it here let’s just say I’m not in the most accepting environment atm. So while I’m working to move out I’m hoping shadow work will allow me the mental clarity to survive just a little longer.
• I’ve managed to record my tarot readings somewhat often; sure maybe the longest I’ve gone is about 4 weeks between them but the fact that I had able to do it at least twice in one month is incredible by my standards!
• Speaking of tarot; recently I’ve started to get better at interpreting the meaning of the cards outside of using books. I have about 3 tarot books that I read the meaning of my cards from (I like to get multiple perspectives) and recently started interpreting the cards myself, writing it down what I got and THEN consulting my books. More often than not my interpretations tend to lineup with the books. This is uber exciting for me since I have terrible memory and the fact it’s starting to stick makes me hopeful!
• I made my first oil; that being rose oil! And it’s been three months and it hasn’t gone moldy!! (Another incredible thing by my standards!)
• I made my first spell jar! (A protection jar of course) I usually stay within the realms of Knot magick, but I wanted to push myself a little further. I’ve spent months watching videos and reading books (both witchy and practical) about different herbs and ingredients used in this kind of spell work. Now the finished thing sits nicely in the corner of my room hidden from prying eyes.
• I figured out how to make my grimoire aesthetic looking! The key is, you don’t!
Well I mean, let me explain. I realized that the overwhelming pressure of making my writing look good was… overwhelming. So instead I use an old animal crossing themed notebook I got for my birthday. It takes a lot of the pressure off.
And I know what your thinking; Pierre that’s not really a solution! All the witch influencers always say that and then still have amazing looking grimoires anyway!!!
Well yeah; but here’s the kicker, that shitty little notebook that’s an unorganized mess where all your ideas go; that’s your working grimoire.
Think of it like a sketchbook; a place where all your incomplete thoughts and scribbles go. It’s okay to have it look messy cause it’s you learning. Write down work in progress spells; ideas, and the like.
That way when you come up with a spell that has results; or you feel like you’ve studied and gathered enough information on a topic; you comb over that information in that crappy little book; take the valuable bits and then take the time to put them in pretty little book.
I ramble to much about it already; maybe I’ll make a whole separate post on it. And if did it will be linked here
Feel free to join in with your list in the comments!

Updates & Announcements, January 2025
This is an article from my website, The Witchy Housewife. You can read it at the source here or look under the cut to read it here on Tumblr. If you enjoy my work, please consider subscribing (at the bottom of this page) to receive articles as they're posted via e-mail, exploring the shop, leaving a tip, or reblogging this post. I run this all myself, so all support is greatly appreciated. 💜🔮✨
Merry meet, my darlings. I am thrilled to share that there has been a great deal of momentum with this website over the past couple of months and there is a great deal still to come. It has been several months since our last update back when I’d first made the move from my previous web host, so I’ve decided it was absolutely time for another one so that every one of you lovely folks can be brought up to date with what has transpired since then and what is currently in the works.
What’s New?
The first thing I would like to note, for those who may not have noticed, is that the website is now optimized for mobile use. A large percentage of traffic – over half, in fact – to this website seems to come from mobile devices. As such, I thought it was a very important change to make. I am very happy to say that the entire website is now mobile-friendly, and I will continue to make improvements to user accessibility as we move forward through the year. With this change and with the release of my new commercial, I have also announced my open e-mail policy. This means that you can message me via e-mail regarding any topic relevant to the content of this website and expect a response. Admittedly, this has always been my policy, but as of now, it is stated plainly and publicly here for all to be aware of.
Along with the overall update to the website appearance, there have been new products added to the Shop, a refresh on all Intuitive Services, as well as updates to the Digital Grimoire. If you haven’t visited the shop yet, I very much encourage you to do so. As fair pricing is my #1 priority in running this shop, you will find that the prices of goods and services are much more affordable than most metaphysical shops have to offer. In addition to this, from February 1st – February 7th, I will be holding an Imbolc sale for up to 20% off select products and services. This sale extends to my Monthly Blessings subscription service using the code ‘IMBOLC25’ during the same timeframe for 20% off your first month for all subscription tiers. You may learn more about my subscription service here – though we will dive into some of the updates seen regarding that service right here shortly.

As for the Digital Grimoire, though some pages are still in progress as I move my written notes into my digital notebook, many of the pages have already been fleshed out, including: A guide to my Energy Key System, information on the Elements, information on the Planets, information on the Zodiac, information on the Months, and information on the Psephoi. The rest of the pages will be fully fleshed out this year, and hopefully a lot sooner – as in, within the coming months. As I’ve mentioned, this process is just a matter of digitizing my physical notes.
Returning to my Monthly Blessings subscription service for a moment, where I host my Monthly Energy Readings and Monthly Pick-a-Card Readings, along with notes and articles on my intuitive studies and theories on many of the weirder topics that may not necessarily be shared here for the moment. First, for those who are already subscribed, you will notice that there has been a refresh to account for some of the recent changes to Patreon’s interface. The work I share there is now organized neatly into various categorized, and many of my posts are also tagged by topic. I have also added a host of new things to the selection, among them being a Shop where non-members may purchase my Monthly Energy Readings, my new annual Luxe Gothique OneNote Template, individual rituals, and select exclusive articles should they prefer this to the monthly subscription. Note that I do encourage you to consider the subscription, however, as all of these things are included with all subscription tiers.
Finally, some of you may have noticed that I am slowly making my return to social media via Tumblr (the-witchy-housewife). Many of the things that I post here are set to be automatically shared to Xwitter (a portmanteau for X/Twitter) and Facebook, as well, for those of you who use those platforms instead. As I do not spend much time on social media, however, please note that, overall, it will still be easiest to reach me via my contact form. In addition to these platforms, you can also find my work for The Witchy Housewife on my personal Pinterest and my personal TikTok. I also have pages specifically for The Witchy Housewife set up with YouTube and Instagram, but we will discuss their plans later on in this update. These links are also available in the footer of this website.
Finally, for our last update, I have decided to change my schedule for articles from once bi-monthly to once monthly. There are great many articles I want to get out to you all that I very much want to catch up on, so this will become a priority for this year. I already have my article for February lined up for 8:00 AM CST on the first of the month.
What’s Next?
I am super excited to announce that preparations have finally begun to get back to creating my custom magickal blends and original products and artwork. Space has been made, and I am in the process of reworking some things to begin ordering the ingredients as soon as possible. I foresee these items returning to the shop come summer if all goes according to plan, starting with my original anointing oils, working candles, and infused soaps.
Preparations have also begun on YouTube content. I plan to start off with audio recordings for many of my articles for those who prefer such a format as well as my guided meditations. Once the Digital Grimoire is complete, which, as I’ve mentioned, will be happening this year, I will also be working on some video content relevant to the information provided there, which will be wonderful for those new to such information.
Work on Khthonic Wicca continues, and there are more updates to come this year regarding not only the book, but the path itself, as, in addition to fleshing out the Digital Grimoire pages set up for it, I plan to publish a few articles on the matter. I will also likely release some of my artwork pieces for the project for purchase as prints once they have been completed. In this same vein, I continue working on the writing and artwork for my Mythos Reimagined series. Likewise, there will be more information to come as I get closer to the release of these projects.
I am also working on my free course, The Aspects of Self, with plans to also release that this year. The self-paced course for self-discovery and growth will include a virtual textbook, exercises and assignments, printable materials, and the option to receive a printable Certificate of Completion upon submission of a final essay. A physical textbook will also be made for purchase for those who would prefer it rather than the free virtual copy. I feel that this course will be very beneficial to many, and I have finally been able to rework it to deliver a polished course I am happy with.
Finally, as a little very-early preview, I am heavily considering establishing a forum here on The Witchy Housewife. Previously, I have tried Discord as a means for developing my community, and time and time again, I have found that I am just not totally satisfied with it. I think a return to the old ways of online forums will be much more organized, allow people more time to think on discussions, and give the entire public access to many of the important conversations which may be had within the space. This would come alongside with some of the other membership ideas I have for the website, including access to a wish list tool for the shop. Currently, I have no set timeframe for which this will be released, as I am still thinking on it, but I would love to receive feedback on whether or not my readers would be interested in a community space like this.
Final Thoughts
As always, please feel free to share this website with your likeminded loved ones. Over the years of running this website, I have come to value authenticity in my writing over all else. Unfortunately, authenticity does not beat clickbait titles and corporate copywriting in the game of algorithms and search engine optimization. Word of mouth, therefore – be it in person or through any social media platforms you may use – is the best way that you can help me to grow this website. If you would like to support my work further, however, please feel free to check out the Shop, check out my Monthly Blessings subscription service, or leave donation of any amount via my Ko-Fi page.
Please do not be afraid to contact me if there are any issues or bugs that you run into on this website. As I do this work alone, there may be some issues here or there, and if there are, I would like to correct them as soon as they are noticed. Do not hestitate, as well, if you have questions or suggestions regarding the website, articles, or products and services within the shop. I aim to help as many people as possible with the work that I do here. Until we meet again, I wish you much love and many blessings on your journey. Have a beautiful day.

I am actually trying bullet journaling which is why the article caught my eye.
My fellow Witchlings, the part in the article that really struck home:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For some reason this made me think of my spell record format that I have.
Below is example of a spell that I watched on YouTube from Rachel Patterson and wrote down.
As for the connection between the bullet journal article and spell record format is this: keeping track of the spellwork/jar/charm/talisman you do and the outcome will help you see the evidence of what has and has not worked in your magicks. I always review twice a month to once a week the spells I have cast in order to notate an update or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The part that is not on this is that after casting, I do a tarot spread to determine if it worked or not. See the spell below for what I mean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am still new to tarot which is why I wrote all this information. I just do a “yes or no” single card pull.
I use an app called “Tarot Simple” by Cathy Checora that I know is on iPhone and last I heard (several months ago) they were working to get it on Android. I highly recommend it for witchlings of all levels and ages.

Below is my Spell record format. Please feel free to use it and alter as you wish. If you share it, please credit. Thank you!

Everyday Acts of Witchcraft
I find it personally important to stay connected to my craft on a day to day basis, since I’m the type of person who lets things fall to the wayside sometimes, so I like to do small acts of magic in my everyday life. Even if it’s not something big and fancy and done up, it’s still keeping connection with my spiritual self. If I’m being honest, I’ll probably update this list at some point in the future, but I just wanted to gather some of the things I tend to do daily in one spot. It makes it easier for me to find and just might help someone who’s looking to do the same thing. I’m DEFINITELY still learning and still on the path of discovery for my craft, but I figured that jotting things down can’t hurt, and sharing information could be useful to someone. Without further ado, here are some of my mundane magicks.
Tarot App
I’m someone who’s always busy. Always going somewhere or doing something, its mostly work but I don’t think my boss would like me pulling out my deck of tarot cards in the back of a Starbucks. The app sends me a reminder for my daily reading, and you have access to a couple of different spreads with an easy interface to use. It lets me shuffle my cards and choose at my pace, which is something I really appreciate. I have a Samsung, and the app I use is Galaxy Tarot. While I prefer the traditional deck by far, its useful on the run.
Moon Calendar
I like having a moon calendar handy to keep track of moon phases. It’s a lot easier to forget I have an app on my phone and check it when I remember I have it than to google it every time. You could also keep this in a notebook or mark it on a normal calendar as well.
Intent
I do multiple things with specific intent throughout the day. Sometimes its a shower with the intent of scrubbing off negativity and starting anew, other times it could be stirring my tea clockwise to invite positivity and warmth into my life. Tailor it to your task and you can do almost anything with intent like this.
Cleansing/Cleaning
Okay, hear me out. Clutter messes with my head a lot, I feel off my game and my mood plummets in a messy area. I tend to notice a stagnant vibe and the energy of the room feels off as well. I tend to clean my space with the intent of banishing any negative energy or energy that no longer serves me positively. Sometimes I light candles or incense while I clean, sometimes I light sage, sometimes I blast music, it depends on the day. Cleaning my space and cleansing my space go hand in hand most times though.
Research
I try to devote a little bit of time out of every day to look into a topic that interests me and learn more about it. It keeps me learning and growing, and it tends to be more fun than I think it will be.
I know there are more things to add but I can’t think of them for the life of me. Either way, its a good reference point to look back on if I need to, and its not long to read! If I think of any more I’ll be sure to add them!

So we've just been through a huge snow storm and I want to collect some snow and use it. What are some magical uses for snow and snow water? Because I'm having some trouble finding any.
[gently takes you by the shoulders and gives you a nice headbonk]
Nonny, I love you, let me give you a permission: It is totally okay for you to come up with your own. You have my full, blanket permission to decide for yourself what it's good for and how to use it! So I'm going to help guide you toward coming up with some things, but you have to promise me that you're not going to take my word as law, okay? You're the witch, and you get to take your own word as law!
So, a couple of springboard ideas:
📜 Find a list - This would be the googling, the "what are the magickal uses for snow?" and stuff like that (protip: spelling "magick" with the K does, unfortunately, sometimes pull up better searches. Damn you, Crowley). You might find lists in books or on blogs or on witchy websites. Here's the con though: You have NO idea where these lists came from. If they tell you snow is good for, idk, summoning cheeseburgers, WHY is it good for that? Where did they get that information? Who came up with it in the first place? You don't know! Do you take them at their word because they said it with authority?
📓 Sit with a notebook and make it up - Well if the people in the above example can come up with their own info, then darn it so can you! This is why we have the term "UPG" (Unverified Personal Gnosis). It's witch-speak for "I made this up but it seems to work for me!" Now, you can come up with some uses for snow in general: it's cold, so you can use it to freeze. It melts, so you can use it to melt away a bad habit, or 'thaw out' some icy tension between you and a friend after a fight. But also... that's just snow in general. Get more specific! Think about this particular snow. You wouldn't use a nice light, gentle solstice snow for the same thing you'd use snow from a blizzard that trapped you in your house and shut down all the airports. What did this particular snowstorm do? What did it do for you in particular? Did it trap you inside and make you miss things you were looking forward to? Did it happen right at a convenient time when you actually didn't have anything going on? This snow could be about disaster, or it could be about disaster passing over you! idk! It's endless. Grab a mug of something warm, get a nice pen, turn on some music, and just spend some time thinking about it. You'll come up with something better than I could!
❄ Ask it. - Yes, really! Go grab a jar of snow. Sit down with it. Say hello. Introduce yourself. Ask it what it wants to help you with. Listen. Does anything come to mind? Write it down. Say thank you!
⚗ Experiment - Now, THIS one I think you should do regardless of what other methods you use. You can sit with a notebook and come up with some great reasons why this snow will help you with bringing goodness to you. But then you use it in a spell, and everything goes to shit. Make note of it! You can spend hours and days and months and years coming up with what should happen when you do a spell, but eventually you're going to have to look at what did happen. Analyze! Make notes! Ask questions! Why didn't it work the way you wanted it to? Or did it work almost perfectly but not quite? Or did it go off without a hitch? Heyyyy, that's a result!! We love results. Write your results down! Repeat! Remember your scientific method!

Nightman (T), Chapter 1/2 >1k
Summary: Simon's come up with a brilliant song, but Penny and Agatha refuse to perform it for a musical assignment. Perhaps Simon’s roommate/enemy/boy who inspired the song can help his musical dreams come true.
Or, a cracky fic where Simon writes the nightman song from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Inspired by @facewithoutheart ‘s post
Warnings: none
Read the 1st chapter on ao3, or below :)
JUST TWO MEN SHARING THE NIGHT
“Guys, I finally got the song for our project!” I announce to Penny and Agatha as I sit down for breakfast.
Since the beginning of the term the three of us have been working on a music assignment for our Lyrical Spells class, but everything we’ve come up with so far has been awful.
Part of that is because Penny and Agatha are complete shite at anything music related, and part of it is because I really don’t get the magickal aspect of this class. (It’s like: lyrics can become cultural touchstones something something melodies as effective memory tools blah blah blah).
We had hoped with Penny’s great magic skills, and the basic keyboard skills I picked up from a boy in the care home last summer that we’d be able to make something passable, but we’ve had no such luck.
Until last night! I was watching Baz sleep (only because he’s been weird ever since he showed up late to the start of the term: he limps, he doesn’t eat enough, he looks scared when he sleeps instead of peaceful) when inspiration struck! I grabbed a notebook and started scribbling down lyrics. It was perfect! I could finish this assignment, and since apparently being on a truce isn’t enough, maybe my song could get under Baz’s skin enough for him to finally tell me what the hell went on in the weeks he was missing.
I eat breakfast as fast as I can, while explaining to my friends how I came up with the song for our Lyrical Spells assignment and how it could help with getting information out of Baz.
As soon as we’re finished eating, I drag Penny and Agatha to one of the music rooms, excited to show them what I’ve written.
I place my notebook on the stand and run through the chords I came up with in my head this morning.
I start with a C minor chord and sing the tune I’ve made up.
“It’s the Nightman / you sneak into my dreams / you make me wanna cry / you make me wanna die / I hate you, I hate you Nightman.
“Every night you come into our room / pin me down with your strong glare / you pin me down and I try to fight you / you sink into me / I fill you up / you fill me up / and I become the Nightman.”
Agatha makes a face and it messes me up. I stop playing to ask what’s wrong, annoyed that my music is being interrupted.
“Well, I like the tune and all, but why are the lyrics about you and Baz having sex?”
“Merlin!! Ewwww, Aggy. That is obviously not what the song’s about!” I defend myself. I can’t believe she’d even think that.
Agatha looks doubtful. She just doesn’t understand lyrical metaphors.
“Just listen to the rest of the song, okay?”
I start up where I left off.
“It’s just two men sharing the night! / it must be wrong / it feels so right! / it’s just two men sharing each other / just two men, supposed to be brothers!”
Penny starts making a face but I don’t stop this time. I run my fingers up the keys in a fancy little move before getting to my favorite part.
“One on top and one on bottom / we were always meant to be more / one is inside and one is out / this is what rivals are for / one is screaming he’s so happy / the other’s screaming a passionate shout! / It's the Nightman / feeling so wrong, so right man.”
For the last line I slow the tempo down and lower my pitch. “You fill me up then I become the Niiiiiightmaaan!”
I finish the song smiling, it sounds so much better with the keyboard, but Penny and Agatha aren’t matching my energy.
“It still sounds like a song about Baz buggering you,” Agatha says, crossing her arms, making that grossed out face again.
“What!?! How did you get that from what I just sang??”
I turn to Penny for support but she’s also looking at me weird.
“Okay it’s obviously about our epic rivalry and Baz plotting to turn me into an evil creature of the night like him!”
The girls roll their eyes in sync.
“Maybe write some less homoerotic lyrics then, Si,” Penny suggests.
My face heats up (in anger, obviously) at her words.
“It’s not homoerati-homoero… it’s not gay!” I shout.
“Okay, Crowley, it’s Totally Not Gay,” Agatha says, coughing from the green smoke that’s started pouring off me. “Can you please stop setting the place on fire?”
She’s still not getting it, but I do my best to calm down and get my magic under control. I shoot Agatha an apologetic look, I know how much my magic bothers her when it gets out of control. I just wish they’d understand what my song is about.
“Okay well, you guys can either go with my song, or think up something yourself,” I say a little smugly. Even if they don’t like my song, it’s the best thing we’ve come up with so far. And it’s not like they could create a song without me.
-
In class later that day the girls talk to Ms. Lyra and pair up with Gareth instead of me.

dorm friendly magick for broom-closeted student witches
Tumblr media
Got roommates that aren’t into witchcraft/magick? Can’t burn incense in your dorm room? Don’t have time for elaborate rituals between studying for exams and writing papers? I’ve been there. Here are some of my favorite undercover spells and rituals for witches living that college life.
Journal Magick
Tumblr media
Keep a manifestation journal! Find a journal that really speaks to you and makes you feel good every time you open it, whether it’s a bulky leatherbound tome or has a holographic cover and hot pink pages -- what matters is that you feel a connection to it.
Every morning, write down the things you want to manifest in your journal in the present tense, as if they had already happened. [Note: this works better if you are writing the same thing every day for at least a few weeks. Consistent intent is key!]
For more information on this type of manifestation, just search “scripting” on YouTube and you’ll find approximately 642934 videos on the subject.
This is a really great technique for closet witches, because no one is going to be suspicious of you writing in a notebook -- plus, it’s normal for people to want to keep their journals private.
Work with correspondences just like you would for a normal spell! You can print out photos of herbs, crystals, tarot cards, astrological signs, or moon phases that correspond to your intention and glue them into your journal (or draw them, if you have artistic talent). You could even get an essential oil that matches your intention and dab a drop of it on the page. You’re essentially creating an altar dedicated to your intention, just on paper instead of in a physical altar space.
Tap into the magick of color by writing your intentions with a pen in a corresponding color (green = abundance/wealth, pink = love and friendship, yellow = academic success, etc.).
Tea and Coffee Magick
Tumblr media
Tea and coffee are already essentially potions, and no one is going to think twice about a college student drinking a lot of coffee/tea.
Coffee is associated with grounding and protection, and it adds energy to any spell it is added to. Black tea is associated with protection, courage, and abundance. Green and white tea have their own, slightly different magickal uses. Based on these correspondences, you can use coffee and tea as a base for undercover potions!
For mental clarity and memory retention, brew a mixture of black coffee, lion’s mane, chaga, and ginger. For a caffeine-free alternative, brew an herbal tea with rosemary and peppermint.
To cleanse negative energy and release stress, brew a mixture of black coffee, Ashwagandha, cinnamon, tulsi or basil, and Eleuthero. This is based on a Four Sigmatic blend, lmao.
For a sneaky prosperity spell, brew a mixture of black coffee, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla. Yes, that is essentially pumpkin pie spice, and yes, you can use a pre-mixed pumpkin pie blend instead of buying the individual spices.
I could go on, but you get the idea. You can customize your morning beverage to suit any magickal or spiritual need.
Most plants have medicinal uses that are the same or similar to their magickal uses. So if anyone asks, tell them you’re adding these extra herbs for their nutritional and/or medicinal value.
You can also charge your tea or coffee with crystals. Just set a small crystal associated with your intention (amethyst for mental clarity, black tourmaline for protection, citrine for prosperity, etc.) next to the mug for a few minutes, or place it on top of your coffee maker. Be sure to charge both the crystal and the drink with your intention!
Candle Magick
Tumblr media
If your dorm lets you have candles then congrats, because candle spells are both super powerful and a super easy way to hide your magick in plain sight.
Find a candle in a scent and color that match your intention. For example, you could use a pink, rose-scented candle for a love spell.
You can find custom spell candles made by witches for witches on Amazon and Etsy, and these have the added bonus of having been specifically created for magickal use. Some of the businesses I’ve personally had good experiences with are Art of the Root (available on Amazon), Esoteric Arts (available on Etsy), and Crystal Journey (Amazon).
That being said, I’ve gotten good results with $1.99 scented candles from Walmart, so please don’t feel like you need to spend a fortune on special candles for your spell to be successful.
In a pinch, an unscented white candle can be used for any intention. You can get these at the dollar store, and it’s never a bad idea to have a few on hand.
Oil Magick
Tumblr media
Your dorm has a no-open-flames rule, so candles and incense are out of the question. No problem -- you can get similar results with essential oils.
An essential oil literally contains the concentrated essence of a plant. Magickally speaking, this makes them a powerful way to add some oomph to your spells. They’re also commonly used for aromatherapy, so your roommate probably won’t be phased by you diffusing them in your dorm.
You can create custom EO blends the same way you would create an incense blend, by combining different plants based on their correspondences. You can also buy pre-mixed blends online if you’re feeling lazy or if you have a certain blend you know you’re going to use a lot like, say, a focus-enhancing blend for studying.
Another option, and one that’s more traditionally witchy, is to use magickal oils/ritual oils. A magickal oil is an oil that has been created for a specific magickal purpose -- it’s like a spell in a bottle. A ritual oil is created for a specific use in magickal ritual. You can find tons of different ways to incorporate these oils into your daily life for some very subtle witchcraft.
You can create your own magickal oils by combining herbs, essential oils, and crystals that match your intention, or you can buy magickal oil blends from witch-owned businesses. Art of the Root has my absolute favorite oils -- I have like six different blends, and they’re all ridiculously powerful.
Some ways you can use magickal oils: 1.) wear them as a body oil, 2.) diffuse them like you would an essential oil blend, 3.) use them to anoint and bless objects, like tests or study guides, 4.) add them to spiritual baths, and a million more. [Note: many magickal oils come with real herbs and resins in the bottle. These chunky bits could damage a diffuser, so do keep that in mind.]
Personally, I wear magickal oils on a daily basis in the place of perfume, since most of the ones I own smell really good. As I apply them, I say a small incantation to power them up. For example, if I’m wearing an attraction oil, when I put it on I’ll say something like, “I am powerfully attractive to the people and things that will improve my life.” Which oil I choose to wear depends on the day and the area of my life where I want some extra help.
Tech Magick
Tumblr media
The nice thing about being a witch in the 21st century is that, if all else fails, you can keep your entire magickal practice contained on your laptop and/or phone. And even if you’re not doing 100% of your witchcraft in a virtual space, you can still use your technology as a tool in your practice.
Pinterest is the ultimate visualization tool. You can create a virtual altar to a deity or spirit guide by dedicating a Pinterest board to them, or create vision boards for the things you want to manifest, or create a brainstorming space to plan your full moon rituals... the possibilities are endless.
Keep your Book of Shadows and/or manifestation journal in a Word document. If you’re really concerned about privacy, you can even password protect these documents. Another pro of an electronic Book of Shadows is that most word processors have a “search” function that lets you look things up more easily.
Make a devotional playlist for a deity or spirit guide. Making Spotify playlists for my deities is one of my favorite devotional acts! I’ll put together all of the songs that remind me of that deity, and I can listen to it anytime, anywhere to instantly connect with them. And don’t be afraid to ask your deities what type of music they like -- you may be surprised by the answer!
If any other witches have similar tips, feel free to add onto this! This is just stuff that I’ve found works for me, but magick is deeply personal and everyone will do things a little bit differently.
And not to shove my content in everyone’s faces, but I did just post a spell to enchant your school notebooks on my YouTube channel, so check that out if you’re interested!

Familiars VS Magickal Pets
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Tumblr media
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
This article was written by "Dead" on the Pagans And Witches Amino. I have permission repost this. Link is at the bottom.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
What is a "Familiar"
First thing I will say, that many might not like: Familiars in folklore are spirit beings. Not just any spirits, but ones that a witch has made a pact with for various other tasks usually in exchange for offerings, lending of power, a foothold to the physical world, and sometimes protection as well.
They were also in folklore inherited from other witches, given/assigned to a witch by a more powerful spirit being (most often Fae Royalty, Divine Beings including God, or the 'Devil'), or show up on their own offering assistance in times of need. However, they still perform the tasks and expect reciprocity.
Familiars can and do in folklore, leave. They are not permanently bound to the witch and so will leave if their the relationship is no longer beneficial. A witch could also have more than one Familiar in their lifetime or at a time.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Embodiment
Familiars did not always look like animals, they also could be plants or humanoid. Some are said to be capable of shapeshifting or possessing living creatures with the help of their witch. Interestingly, in my research, I found more accounts of humanoid Familiars that could shapeshift or had some beastial traits (they also ranged in size) in early folklore than I did actual animal Familiars.
Also, in the literature, I encountered they were about 8/10 times referred to as ‘Familiar spirits’ instead of just Familiar. They are also often described as imps, fairies, or demons. However, they seem to be closer or more often related to Fae lore. * Which when you take away the Celtic cultural context from the classification of ‘Fae’ it is basically distinction-less meaning any liminal being not human or divine. *
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
History
“In the early 1970s, Jeffrey Russell noted that 'The small demons that became the witches' familiars of the later Middle Ages were originally dwarves, trolls, fairies, elves, kobolds, or the fertility spirits called Green men, any of whom could be either frightening or funny' and Keith Thomas claimed that the cunning man's fairy helper belongs 'to the same genre as the witch's familiar or the conjurer's demons?'
In 1971 Keith Thomas lamented that the English animal familiar was 'largely unaccounted for'.Despite such references to formality and fear, a large number of relationships between magical practitioner and familiar spirit were informal and intimate” (Wilby).
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Common tasks they performed?
Tasks included but were not limited to spying, shapeshifting, attacking or protecting others, give knowledge, warn and aid in times of danger, help a witch develop abilities, and travel between worlds.
What did they get in return?
The most common offerings mentioned in folklore was blood, energy, and a stable foothold in our realm. However, modernly people offer what one would standardly offer a spirit. Things like milk, honey, incense, food items, and items work just fine.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
What is a "Magickal Pet"?
A Magickal Pet is a physical animal that lives with a witch, that said witch uses for magickal purposes, involves in ritual work, and/or feels spiritually connected to.
This connection really isn't uncommon in pet owners in general and you could involve any animal in magick, so what really makes a Magickal Pet? Well, it is the belief that the pet is interested in the witches craft. Most modern witches cite things like seeming interest in their altar or actions during ritual work, as well as divination forms like interrupting tarot sessions.
Getting A Magickal Pet
You can get a Magickal Pets the same way you get any pet. You don’t need to have these animals from a young age to have a deep connection with them.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
JUST A NOTE ON CONSENT
There is a bit of an ethical dilemma when it comes to using your pets in your craft. This is that using your pets energy, fur, etc. and involving them in rituals can open them up to the same dangers you face during all spell work.
This like overextending their energy, spell blow-back, and connecting them to the work can and do occur. There isn’t really a way that they can expressly consent so if you are going to involve them then PLEASE ward your fur, scale, or feather babies.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Calling a Familiar Ritual
Step 1: Introspection & Planning
This is when you ask yourself why you want a Familiar? Are you ready for one? What kind of Familiar do you think you can handle? As well as think up what your basic terms and negotiate terms are. This introspection period is often paired with meditation.
Plan your ritual. Time, place, tools, etc.? Take into account the weather of the day and be sure not to trespass. Maybe you want to make new portable wards or make/acquire a vessel, anchor, or conduit for the spirit (some spirits refuse to be bound to them and they are not mandatory).
Step 2: Wards, Circles, & Area Setup
Ward yourself and, if you use them, cast your circle. I recommend warding both your self and the space. Here is a pretty good wiki if anyone needs ideas or is confused: Wards
Step 3: Offerings
Lay out your offerings. Offerings can include food items, incense, burning herbs, etc. But if you are going to be doing this outside then I recommend non-toxic and biodegradable materials. Milk and honey are always an easy and safe bet.
Step 4: Incantation
Call to potential spirits. You can use the one below or make your own.
”Spirits of the forest, I pronounce my intentions to thee.
Come forth and seek me, and equal we will be.
Not master and servant, but familiar to familiar, to share our knowledge, our spirit, and our traits.”
Step 5: Meditation/Trance
Meditate and wait for a spirit to answer your call. This may take a bit and they may not show until you enter the astral plane, are sleeping, or at all. Just like in the show, spirits might not come to you right away and that's okay. However, if they don't come within about 3 days then you might want to try again.
Step 6: Negotiation
If/When a spirit shows you then negotiate your terms. Tell them what you want and expect of a Familiar and allow them to say their terms. Get a feel of the spirit and judge whether they are the right choice. Be flexible, but also know the terms you will not move on. Many spirits will take a mile when you give them an inch.
YOU CAN SAY NO AND VICE VERSA
The first spirit might not be your best choice and that’s okay, be careful not to bite off more than you can chew. For example, if you are a witchling or new to spirit work then you should probably respectfully decline powerful spirits like Aos si or mid-level demons (I don’t know how to express that better, sorry demonologists and workers).
Be realistic about what you can handle and try to avoid power/experience imbalances. * I personally have turned away spirits that I felt I was not ready for and there is no shame in it. * Don’t become disrespectful if a spirit decides to say no. They are sentient and often sapient beings that have the right to refuse.
Step 7: Vessel/Anchor/Conduit
Part of your negotiation may have included a vessel or anchor for them (you may make one and they refuse) and this would be the time for you to bind them to it.
Conduits are physical objects used to channel a spirit beings energy and a spirit may prefer that over an anchor/vessel. For example Sigils, the spirit might give you -or you can ask for- a sigil to represent them in ritual and for easy communication. Possibly bring a notebook and pen, just in case.
Step 8: Closing & Cleansing
End your communication with the spirit, close your circle (if you use them), and cleanse yourself to avoid having parasitic or negative spirits attach to you. Gather your stuff as needed.
☽⦁──────── ⦁⧊⦁ ────────⦁☾
Conclusion
Many modern witches equate these two things but unfortunately, a Magickal Pet simply isn’t capable of many of the things a Familiar is. They can’t consent and they rely on you for spiritual and magickal protection.
If it wasn’t for the tasks and capabilities then I would be completely fine with people applying the label to their pets. I have no problem with people involving pets in their craft and I think it is great that so many people feel so connected to their pets as it tells me they are well loved, and that’s always great to see.

“Lady and gentlemen, I give you …”
FULL NAME: Phineas Flynn BASED ON: Phineas (Phineas and Ferb) FACE CLAIM: N/A PRONOUNS: He/Him BIRTHDAY: August 28th, 2002 CURRENT STATUS: Closed
Character Information
Phineas Flynn was always a little young to be doing, well, whatever he decided to do that day. When other kids were playing with matchbox cars, Phineas was asking his dad if he could look under the hood of the station wagon. When other kids were smashing towers of blocks, Phineas was putting together small electronics. He was special and he knew it, and he wouldn’t let anyone forget it.
Unfortunately, those father-son moments working on the family car were Phineas’s last memories of his father. Phineas never really understood why his father packed up and left one day without warning, but his mother seemed to, she said it was “grown up stuff” that Phineas was “too young to understand.” Phineas didn’t like that. Of course he was too young, but that had never stopped him before.
Though the divorce changed the Flynn family and put them all just a little on edge, a little more worried about who or what would disappear next, Phineas didn’t let those strange feelings get in the way of his dream. He was going to be a star. Not a pop star, like his mother once was; but a genius, like Steve Jobs (Phineas had a poster in his room. It wasn’t weird!) He started writing down ideas, at least one a week in a small black notebook he carried around, and dreamed of being part of a legendary team. Phineas could just see it: himself among a gang of effortlessly cool nerds, working late nights in someone’s garage, reaching that eureka moment together and celebrating until the sun came up. Describing that moment wistfully in interviews years later, his picture in some kid’s history book.
When Linda dropped the bomb that the Flynn family was moving from Danville, Phineas didn’t expect England, but he’s determined to make the best of it. After all, Phineas did some research on this town, and it looks like it’s full of Magicks, which were all but driven out of the tri-state area where he grew up. Phineas thinks there could be a real possibility to harness magic with technology, especially in Swynlake, where people seem more open to that kind of thing than they were back in Danville. He just needs to get some money, do some research, and maybe find a business partner. And if people ask if maybe it’s a little intrusive or dangerous to be messing around with magic that he knows little about for the sake of a personal project? Well, yes. Yes it is.

Spellcasting Tools: What Do I Need to Get Started?
Tumblr media
If you are new to the practice of Magic and Witchcraft, you are probably wondering: What tools do I need to cast spells? And the truth is: you don’t really need any special tools because the Magic is not in the wand, it’s in the Witch! That’s why we’ve included DIY options or homemade alternatives to each tool in this post.
Witchcraft is all about meanings. Your tools have a meaning and an identity that is uniquely linked to you as a Witch, and that’s what gives them power. By understanding the significance of each tool and ingredient, you will be able to create successful rituals and spells of Magic, and develop a path towards a more spiritual and meaningful life. In time, your tools will become a part of you, helping you define an identity as a Pagan and playing a major role in the journey to becoming a Real Witch.
In this lesson, you will learn:
The Baby Witch’s Toolkit
Traditional Spellcasting Tools
Candles & Supplies for Casting Spells
FAQ
Athame
Bell
Broom
Boline
Book of Shadows
Cauldron
Chalice
Compass
Magic Wand
The Baby Witch’s Toolkit
You’re about to put together your first Pagan altar. Here’s the best way to avoid unnecessary spending by only buying what you will actually use:
Beginner’s Shopping List:
Candles (pack with all colours)
Cauldron (for burning incense and herbs)
Chalice (for libation and potions)
Incense pack (for focus and inspiration)
Sage bundle (for cleansing and purifying)
That’s it! You will be able to cast most spells in our library of spells with these items. Scroll down to learn more about these and other Witchcraft tools, and learn how you can make your own tools for free.
Traditional Spellcasting Tools
These are the generally accepted Formal Witchcraft Tools. They will be your assistants when you are casting spells, if you can’t find them at your local esoteric shop, check our suggestions and shop online. Avoid cluttering your altar by finding a nice place for your tools to rest. Store them in a drawer, box, or shelf when you are not using them.
Let’s see a quick list of Wiccan tools and supplies.
Tumblr media
Find spells and rituals on a Virtual Altar here.
Tumblr media
Athame
An athame is a knife or dagger for ritual purposes. It’s not used to cut anything physically. Conventionally, it has a black handle and a double edge, and it is used to direct energies during the rituals. For example, to command and summon elementals and spirits. It is a projective tool that, within the system of classical elements, represents the Air, and should be placed on the East side of your altar.
Once you have decided what your athame will be, you can customize it with a symbol that means something to you or represents you. An example would be to inscribe your name or draw a pentagram. But it could be anything you want as long as it means something special for you.
Tumblr media
The Witchs’s bell is a very spiritual musical instrument that is played to evoke positive energies, to summon spirits or deities, or to indicate the beginning or end of different parts of a ritual. Its sound is very sacred and therefore useful when entering a ritual mental state.  In the same way, there are those who use tibetan bowls or drums. The idea behind the use of these instruments is to create an action in your world that differs from your everyday actions.
Tumblr media
Broom
A ritual broom – also known as a besom – is mainly a tool of protection that is used for spiritual and Magical cleansing, and sweeping away all negativity before, during, or after a ritual act. The ritual broom should only gently sweep the floor, almost without even touching it. But it can also be used in warding or cleansing spells such as this elemental protection spell with salt.
The most important thing is to visualize clearly how negativity and distracting energies are being swept out. While sweeping, focus on removing all the astral excesses that typically arise where people live. This purifies the area, allowing you to focus on your ritual works. Since the broom is a purifier, it is associated with the Element Water. Traditionally, brooms were made of birch and willow, but any type of broom will work fine.
Tumblr media
Boline
A boline is a knife for practical use. Traditionally, it has a white handle and a curved blade. You will use it to harvest flowers, cut herbs, branches, thread, or to carve symbols on wood, wax or clay. Basically, to physically cut any materials before or during the casting of a spell.
Its white handle will help you distinguish it from your athame. Also, it’s usually smaller and with a single edge, which can be serrated or smooth depending on the owner. In this case, a kitchen knife can also turn out to be a great option. If you want to step up your candle-carving game, you could also get a candle carving toolkit.
For the consecration of the boline, Scott Cunningham recommends:
“Early in the morning, head to the forest (park, garden). Choose the most beautiful and vibrant plants. Touch them gently with the tip of the knife, forging a connection between the knife and the plants (and thus the Earth). Then sit on the ground. Making sure you are alone, make a pentagram on the ground with the tip of the knife. It’s ready.”
Tumblr media
Book of Shadows
This will be your personal spellbook. It will also often be used to record important information about Witchcraft, as well as observations and thoughts. Some like to write down their personal observations and ideas in a separate “Book of Mirrors”, leaving their Book of Shadows for Magical recipes, invocations, spells, guides, etc.
To create your own book of shadows, find a notebook and decorate it with according to your personal taste. You can draw something on it or paste some flowers, leaves, anything you want! The design of the cover is left to the imagination of the Witch. The goal is to customize it so it will be unique and in harmony with you. Then simply write down all the rituals, spells, Magic invocations and instructions that you plan to use during your practice.
Read also: Book of Mirrors, the Witches’ Magickal Journal
Copy the spells and rituals step by step with their respective illustrations and decorations. Ideally, you should know all of these by memory, but at first you will need to read them, so make sure that the pages and text are readable. The book of shadows is also known under the term “Grimoire” (from French, alteration of grammaire, “grammar”).
Tumblr media
Cauldron
The cauldron is the tool of the Witch par excellence. It is an ancient culinary container, imbued with mystery and in many Magical traditions it is the vessel in which Magical transformations take place. Wiccans see the cauldron as a symbol of the Goddess, the manifest essence of femininity and fertility. It is also a symbol of the element Water, reincarnation, immortality and inspiration.
In contemporary Witchcraft, the cauldron is still used but not to create brews and potions. Think of the Cauldron as the belly of a pregnant woman. Inside of it, a new life is getting ready to exist. In your Cauldron, you could place candles, incenses, perfumes, offerings such as fruits, liquids, and all kinds of elements to be used during a ritual.
It can be filled with water and contemplated during divination, or filled with flowers or some other items related to the spellwork you are doing. You will see that many spells require making fire and burning things, herbs, etc.
For this, it is advisable to have a heat-resistant container as your cauldron. They come in many different sizes, but usually small ones are preferred. They are traditionally made of iron, with three legs (the three legs represent the triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother and Wise Woman, and it also alludes to the three levels of being: Physical, Mental and Spiritual).
Tumblr media
Chalice
The chalice is a cup with a long stem that will be filled with various liquids during spellcasting and rituals. Often, it simply contains water, representing this element, which could be always present on your altar, but it can also be used for pouring wine during Sabbat offerings and ritual toasts, or even blood, and other liquids depending on the spell you are casting. You could also use a chalice to mix water and salt for tracing your protective circle and also for blessings and purifications.
It can be made of silver, brass, glass, stone, or ceramic. Some groups in the tradition of Wicca usually have two types of chalices, one for clean water and one for the wine and other liquids as described. In a coven, there is a main chalice that is carried on to the altar for consecrations. This cup is shared by all the members during the ceremony, and it is filled every time so that everyone can share the beverage (with or without alcohol). Some other covens prefer that each member have their own chalice and they pour from the main one.
Wiccans typically garnish their chalices with runes or other symbols to decorate it. Some paint it or they attach semiprecious stones, so that it will also contain and provide energy to the liquid inside.
Tumblr media
Compass
A compass can be a beautiful decorative item in your sacred space, but it’s also a very useful tool to have near your altar. Many evocations require calling the Quarters while facing each of the four cardinal directions, and some spells involve placing various elements on specific directions, so for sailors and Witches alike, it’s vital to be able to find the North at all times.

Magic Wand
The Wand is a prominent tool because it symbolizes the Will of the person who performs the Magic, and serves above all to direct the energy, and sometimes to cast the Circle of Protection. It is highly esteemed within most Witchcraft traditions.
The wand, like the athame, is used to direct energy. It is usually made of wood and can be decorated or inscribed with symbols. It is a projective tool that represents the Element Fire, although some consider it to be a tool ruled by Air.
Unlike Harry Potter books, the wand does not serve to banish negative influences or for defense, hence many Witches prefer to cast their circle using an athame instead of a wand.
Its function is to evoke and control certain beings to whom the athame and other tools should not summon, since it works by invitation, not by command.
For all this, it is often said that it is a more “peaceful” tool than the athame and the boline. The wand symbolizes evocation, fertility and enchantment.

Witchy Record Keeping; What To Do With A Grimoire/Book of Shadows/ etc.
In my practice, the most important tools are my Book of Mirrors and Grimoire. Record keeping is very crucial to my witchcraft practice. Emphasis on mine, some people find they don’t need to keep records on their magickal information. I feel I need to keep track of where I am in my practice and have it for the future should I ever want to look back.
Witchcraft is deeply personal to each Witch, or your practice is I mean. I find it important to keep records as we are so prone to change we have to keep in mind our past and present to move into our futures. So, here we go.
What’s The Difference?
What is the difference between a Grimoire and Book of Shadows? Well, based in the dictionary there is one, but these words have adopted a different meaning to different people.
Technically speaking, a Grimoire is for spells whereas a Book of Shadows is like a magickal diary or journal. It holds all the other information for your practice.
There is some overlap and some blurring of the lines for some people, and it isn’t required you have both or either. You can really call it whatever you want, there’s no rules to it.
I don’t use a Book of Shadows anymore. My first book was a Book of Shadows but I have since moved on to call my new one a Book of Mirrors. I have a friend who calls hers a Book of Ursa Major. You can call your witchy book whatever you like.
What Should It Look Like?
What do you want it to look like? Ok, I know there’s a big thing with the witch aesthetic to have a beautiful leather bound journal. Yes, my old Book of Shadows is leather bound and so is my Grimoire. But my Book of Mirrors is a blue binder I bought at the store with some cool dividing insets and some covers I made.
You can do whatever you want! You want that leather bound journal, save up for it! You want some old notebook? Go for it! Want to do it electronically? You do you! It’s whatever works for your practice. The only reason I used leather bound for my first Book of Shadows was because it had been a gift from my grandparents. I already had it.
Do what makes you happy and also what you have available to you. There’s nothing wrong with using a notebook or binder, actually I find the binder really useful in keeping things sorted.
Use what you have, it doesn’t have to be fancy.
Where To Start?
I always make a cover page when I start, some people will put a blessing spell in the front, and if you’re Wiccan you can put the Wiccan Rede on the first page if you so please. The reason I make a cover page is to give it an introduction, to write down my book and know this is something important to me. If you want, go in and start writing spells in it. I do recommend you do a blessing spell on it. Just to ensure it is protected and will give you inspiration.
Book Blessing Spell
Take three crystals and put one at the top and two by the sides of the book, you sit with the bottom of the book facing you.
Lay your hands on the cover and recite
“Book of Shadows made to hide,
Book of Light made to guide.
It is you and I, mighty book,
To discover the secrets others overlook.
So mote it be, my good friend.
May we be there till the end.”
How To Fill My Pages?
How do you want to fill the pages? With spells, obviously, but you can include a myriad of other things. Are you a kitchen witch? Put your favorite recipes in there! A green witch? Fill with information about plants! Worship Gods and Goddesses? Put their stories and correspondences in there!
It is to be made by you and no one else. Below are some extra prompt ideas.
Prompts
Ancestor Dedication
Tarot Guide
Personal Correspondences
Symbols Guide
Tool uses
Secret messages
Maps
Flower or herb pressings
Your own art
Stories from your astral travels/ dreams/ nature walks
Your hopes and dreams
Anything Else?
Because this book is made to keep records of where you are in your path, try and date everything. Also every now and again write down your beliefs, what gods you follow or don’t follow, what you believe about the universe, what you believe about magick, etc. Talk about the why and how of your practice.
Most of all, enjoy what you’re creating. Your Book of Shadows/Mirrors/Light/Whatever You Call It is all about you and your practice. Make sure it’s fun and make sure it’s a reflection of you.
This might be one of my longest posts yet but it’s something that’s really important to me. I want other witches to know their practice is their own and everything they do it in belongs to them.
Blessed Be!

Materia Medica.
A Materia Medica is a system for keeping information about plants organized. The words mean “healing materials” in Latin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are journals that contain information about plants that will be helpful to you, including magickal correspondences, planetary and astrological correspondences, growth and care tips, and how to use them as medicine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your Materia Medica should be personal to you and your family, and may even include information on doctors appointments, shot records, and questions to ask your doctor in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These deeply personal notebooks and journals will help you to explore herbalism more deeply. It will also thankfully give your brain a rest by storing more information than your brain for considerably longer.
Tumblr media
What Goes Into A Materia Medica Journal?
Bags of herbs like lavender and bay leaves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are a few specific components that any good Materia Medica has:
Information on plants used in herbal medicine. This will include effects, energetics, safety issues, drug interactions, preparations and dosages.
Photos of studied plants. Some plants aren’t used as often in your home, but they are good to study for future needs. Keeping photos of plants in each stage of their growth can help you identify those plants quickly at any time of the year. This is so important for avoiding poisonous plants that look like delicious carrots.
Images, photos, drawings, and illustrations all help us to identify a plant more easily than words alone could ever do.
A section that lists conditions that can be easily treated at home, and how they can be treated. A bit of yarrow for a scraped knee, elder berry for sniffles. Keep notes of what you’ve used in the past that has worked (and what hasn’t!) as well as the form it was taken (salve, tincture, tea?). Notes on how well and how quickly the issue cleared up can help you decide if you will use that remedy again.
Recipes! Keep track of the recipes you enjoy and use. Build upon recipes taken from other sources so that they suit you and your family better.
Reference guides and notes from other sources.
Family records and medical histories.
How you lay out your Materia Medica will depend on why you’re making it. I’ve started mine in Evernote, with a stack of notebooks all about Herbalism.
I have a notebook for general notes about herbalism, where I will keep information about the craft itself.
I also have a notebook for recipes, where I will be keeping all of my herbal remedies. And finally, I have a notebook where I will be keeping information about individual plants. I’ll add photos and links for further information and reading.
Having an online Materia Medica can be a great benefit because you can have contextual linking and the internet is at your fingertips, but I will probably finalize a lot of my information in a paper notebook.
There’s something more official about a Materia Medica set in paper than one set in code.
