Language Learning Through Immersion: One Year Japanese Update
11/03/2021
I did it, you guys! I’ve successfully reached my very first year of Japanese language immersion! I honestly thought that I would have given up by now, but this really has been a fun and ultimately rewarding endeavor.
Studying the language has been at the back of my mind for years since elementary school, I just never really knew how to go about it before, and I always thought that I could learn it in a classroom setting someday. That someday for me was in two elective courses in university, and while those were fun as well, it did not give me the same gains that I have achieved in this past year.
It’s probably easier to quantify learning a language in a classroom setting, especially when going through a program to earn a language degree. Learning through immersion, however, I had to really consider what my goals should be on my own. Eventually, I stumbled upon an article saying that for an English speaker, Japanese was exceptionally difficult to learn and that at least 2,200 hours must be spent with the language to reach a certain level of proficiency. So I said to myself, “well okay internet, if you say so!”, and set that as my long term goal going forward.
Spoiler Alert: I did not hit that goal in my first year. I am not crazy and will never listen to Japanese in my sleep regardless of what Khatzumoto (the creator of All Japanese All the Time) says.
I did, however, hit a total 1,226.65 active immersion hours in my first year, so I guess I’m still a bit nuts. That is 874.96 hours of active listening and 351.69 reading hours. I also did 270.59 hours of passive listening, also known as the time in the very beginning of my immersion where I was using Japanese subtitles (therefore not really concentrating on listening alone). That’s a cumulative 1,497.24 hours spent with Japanese. That’s more than halfway towards my goal!
To further break that down for curious animanga fans out there, that’s 973 episodes from 109 anime, 765 episodes from 33 dramas, 7 movies, and 967 chapters from 107 volumes of manga (21 series). Here’s my anilist and mydramalist to see what I’ve read/watched.
During all this, I was also doing my daily Anki reps and now I have a 530 day SRS streak (includes the time prior starting immersion and only doing RTK and some vocabulary cards) and a total 8,857 sentence cards. I’ve been averaging 406 cards daily (because I’m trying to cure my leeches) and I spend about an hour per day doing reps and learning new cards. I don’t really track my time on Anki, but I do have a set timer that goes off after 1-1:30 hours.
What I haven’t touched upon at all is output. I have not gone out of my way to find a tutor or a language partner. There’s still plenty of input out there to immerse in before I even consider outputting.
Graphs, stats, and more thoughts:
Here's my current card count in my main deck (minus the cards in my new/learning queue and leeches I've been relearning which are in separate decks):
That one day in 2019 where I did not do my cards because I was seriously doubting whether I can actually stick with language learning this time around will forever haunt and inspire me to keep going everyday.
Workflow and Tips
You might be wondering, how do I have a lot of time? I started this whole endeavor in the middle of a pandemic, which eliminated the option of me going to a language school, and a slew of other things I were considering doing last year became impossible (and if anything, very scary to do in a pandemic). All I can say is that, things work out eventually if it is His will, and if I can learn a skill before everything properly settles back down again, then why not?
I wake up at 5 in the morning everyday to either do my Anki reps or read until the time when I need to get up and I listen to compressed audio throughout the day. The biggest tip is to switch the time you spend watching/reading in your native language to your target language instead. Listen to a podcast during your commute, watch an episode during lunch break, read before going to bed, do your Anki reps in the bathroom if you have to.
But, if you’re feeling burnt out, there is no reason for you to not take a break! I have been watching a lot of Among Us streams before bed, and I chat with my friends from time to time. Language learning is not a race.
More Stats
Here are a couple of grids of the kanji characters that I have encountered at least once in my immersion and how well I have answered them in my vocabulary/sentence cards.
It's interesting that after almost 9000 words, I have yet to encounter every single character from the Remembering the Kanji 1 (RTK 1) book by James Heisig, which teaches you the most common use characters that are part of the 常用漢字. Which brings me to the question, was writing down every single character being taught in RTK worth it every time it came up in my reviews for the first 3-ish months I was reviewing them? Maybe, maybe not. It certainly removed my anxiety whenever looking at blocks of text in Japanese, but the longer I think about it, the more I feel I should have switched to Recognition RTK earlier. Still, being able to write in proper stroke order is cool I guess, and it also helps me when looking things up in the dictionary.
Here’s the same grid but in JLPT order:
I clearly need to grind those N2 and N1 level cards! Speaking of which, I have apparently almost covered every single character that could possibly appear in the JLPT (except for the N1 which I have only covered half of) in just a year's time. If the JLPT word frequency lists I’m using are accurate, I have about 2,000 words more to go to to cover most vocabulary that could appear in the test. This makes the "10,000 sentences/words to fluency" argument a reasonable milestone to aim for for Japanese learners if said aim is only to pass the test. That said, 10,000 words is just that, a milestone. It's more akin to a comfortable level of comprehension, but not my own concept of fluency which is being able to read with ease, speak articulately, and write comfortably.
READING IMMERSION GRAPHS
My biggest motivation for tracking my stats is for the purpose of seeing whether my reading speed is improving over time. Reading speed is also easier to measure than listening comprehension which is kind of subjective, so I had a lot of fun making these. What I found is that for the first volume or chapter of whatever it is I’m reading, I always take the time to get used to the writing style of the author. My speed really improves whenever I keep reading the same topic over and over again. On the other hand and quite obviously, looking up many new words in a row and trying to parse sentences slows me down.
Manga: Reading Speed Progression per Volume
I clearly love ちはやふる and I am not ashamed to admit it.
I need to start reading longer manga. When I do, I’ll probably split this graph into less than and greater than 20 volumes. Imagine if I start reading something ridiculously long as 名探偵コナン or ワンピース, these graphs will start breaching the bounds of time and space.
Novels: Time Spent Reading per Chapter
#neverforget the time I read chapter six of Norwegian Wood for 9 hours when it took me less than half that time in English RIP. Also, my interest in Kitchen plummeted LOL. Still planning to finish it don’t worry.
I also need to start branching away from manga and start reading more novels and light novels, too just so I can make more pretty graphs.
Visual Novels: Time Spent Reading and Daily Word Count
Also known as images that clearly show that I’ve already spent several days only reading the prologue of Island. I’m not sweating. 切那 needs to stop using words I don’t know in succession. More thoughts on this VN far into the future.
Thoughts on Immersion
I can’t really say anything else other that that it works for me, and needless to say if you’re considering this method, remember that the SRS is your friend but immersion should be your one true love.
Prior to all this, I couldn’t even read a sample paragraph from Genki without being confused to my very soul. Yes, I know, it’s embarrassing, but that’s the truth. I was way more scared of failing my Japanese classes than my actual thesis for my bachelors degree, I kid you not. I would quite literally spend all my free time in university trying to understand grammar, memorize vocabulary, and answer my workbook exercises with little to no success.
I tried so hard to get all the grammar “formulas” into my head for 1.5 years and it only brought me more confusion. I’m never going back to traditional classroom study for language learning, but I will still refer to grammar books when I need to, and not because I feel like I need to answer 4783342 different workbook exercises like my life depended on it.
I still can’t believe it, but with immersion this statement is actually true to a point, don’t try shadowing anime/or calling your boss anime language slurs, use your common sense:
study anime to understand Japanese > study Japanese to understand anime
Future Goals/Plans
2,200 immersion hours was my initial goal, but honestly I feel like that number could be much higher. There’s still a lot of stuff I don’t understand (news, politics, sciences, etc.), so I’ll make attempts to cover more of those things in my immersion.
I’ll continue reading more, because that’s a natural SRS in itself. Try to read longer manga, more novels, visual novels, and light novels, and maybe news articles.
I’ll try to mine as much “JLPT vocab” as I can before making any attempts at taking the JLPT. I noticed that a lot of the words I know don’t appear in the JLPT word lists as much, even though they appear a lot in media/daily conversation.
Continue mining all words I don’t know because all words are useful anyway. There is no such thing as useless words. I never really understood mining only “interesting words” or words that “pop up” in your immersion. As I said in my previous blog post, 美人局 is an interesting word and I certainly caught it being said in my immersion, but in the three languages I know, I wouldn’t know when I would be able to use such a word, as compared to something like ジャガイモ which is a significantly less interesting word, but is certainly useful to know.
_
I have managed to talk up a storm, but if you have any questions regarding my process or recommendations for new immersion material, please feel free to send an ask/reply to this post. I love hearing about other people’s language learning/immersion journeys.
See you on my next post!

THE CHALLENGE — show a certain part of your story process based on you being tagged by other creators.
Thank you @herpixels for tagging me in your wonderful challenge! Here’s a behind-the-scenes essay for En Pointe ❤
WRITING PROCESS — show us a part of your script or explain how you write your scenes. do you write in screenplay format or novel format?
I write in novel format, and have a very methodical process. I have a Planning Notebook which covers all the general elements of the story; cast list + descriptions, main plot, themes, overviews of all chapters, timeline, world + settings information, research links, and a massive section with all my notes on relationships, character styles, history, writing goals, arcs, and most crucially, what to avoid from the absolute fucking mess of Fallen Angels.
At the smaller scale, before writing, I plan out each chapter in my Chapter Workbook. First is the Outline, which is a synopsis of the main events. Going off that, I write a list of Chapter Shots which describes in writing all the pictures; what kind of shot it is (long, over-the-shoulder, etc), the location + atmosphere, and what the characters are doing. Corresponding to these I list the Poses, for each character and what expression they have. I then write a To Do List for what sets to build, new sims to make, number of poses to create, the cc I have to find or make. The final section is Details, which notes down all the little things I have to remember; running gags, nuances, and themes; current state of relationships and character arcs to keep track of their development; what my aims are for character perceptions + issues I need to fix from the last chapter. This section is super important to make sure the story unfolds smoothly and revelations make sense, or else I get something abrupt like Mako x Raven, because I didn’t foreshadow clearly or early enough in advance. Here are snippets of what this looks like:
Once I finish all this planning (the current word count of the two documents is 20k lmfao), then I begin writing. It’s a lot less structured because I just start with the most exciting scenes or ones I’ve been thinking about for a while. I organise the paragraphs according to the Chapter Shots. A bit of light editing then the writing is ready to publish!
SCENE BUILDING — show us you in the middle of scene building through pictures, gifs, or a video. explain what is the best thing about scene building and what is the worst!
I dislike scene building because TS3′s weak ass makes everything so tedious. I have a Pinterest board to inspire the settings. The worst part is definitely when the game moves at 0.001 m/s and crashes, which happens far too often and pisses me off. Here’s a screenshot I accidentally took when setting up the big family dinner scene in Chapter 8. I tried my best to minimise the amount of sims that were actually there because I take shortcuts whenever possible. Crowd scenes suck.

CC + POSE MAKING — do you make your own cc/poses for your scene? If so, what is your process like to create? do you just go off the top of your head? do you use reference photos?
I make all the poses that aren’t singular and ‘normal’, due to height differences and also so I can achieve my exact vision. Depending on the length of the chapter, this can range from 20-50 poses, which is looking to be around 700 poses by the story finale. I try to find reference photos (essential for ballet poses) when I can to make them look natural. I also convert or mesh clothing + objects, but I’m lazy so I often cheat with Photoshop.
GETTING IN THE ZONE — what do you do to get in the zone to work on a scene? examples include: show us your playlist you use when working on a scene, what’s your go-to scene snack/drink, etc.
I don’t actually have anything for this. If I don’t feel like doing a particular task on the To Do List I just try something else. Sometimes I listen to Eva and Mako’s playlists when working though, and there are certain songs I associate with certain parts of the story which help me when I’m thinking of them.

SCREENSHOT FOLDER — give us a look into your screenshot folder to show us just how much goes into one scene for your story. scrapped pictures encouraged!
I also have a linear method for pictures. Firstly, I create the poses, and test them in a blank background, which is when I figure out the most flattering angles, and edit the poses if needed. After that I begin series of test shots in the actual set, redoing up to three times until it looks passable. Since I use natural light almost every shot has a double (or even triple), with outdoor lighting for the environment and controlled interior lighting for the sims, which is then spliced together along with other atmospheric editing. There’s a lot of screenshots to ‘build’ the final visual but I rarely have alternative or scrapped finals because that would be a terrible waste of time. Why do I do this ridiculously tedious process? Because I’m stupid.

CAPTIONS — are you a caption on the picture kind of storyteller or captions in text box type of storyteller? why? do you do both?
I don’t do caption format, because for me, it removes lots of detail and nuance. Long prose means my audience is much smaller, but I wouldn’t be able to convey half the things just by still visuals and dialogue. As you might be able to tell from the aforementioned question, picture taking is also just immensely tiring.
EDITING — explain and show us your process editing a scene through a video, gif, or picture. a before and after will suffice if you aren’t in the middle of editing a scene as you answer this.
Corresponding to the Screenshot Folder question:

I no longer rely on Reshade for post-processing, except for DOF, but even then I blur in editing. Lately I’ve been trying to create a more realistic, atmospheric look with strong DOF, bloom, motion blur, and smoothing out light + shadows with exposure brushes.

THROWBACK — show us an ancient story scene you done in the past and explain how you would do the scene differently today!
You mean every scene I’ve ever done before En Pointe LOL If we’re talking ancient, I might as well go back to the very beginning of The Kingston Legacy, in 2015. It’s the classic legacy opening of the founder moving to a new town, with basic writing and terrible low-setting-no-cc pictures. I would do literally everything different. I can’t even begin to describe so here’s something to laugh at.

I tag — @lazysunjade (watch her post it 1 second later) @amys-snapshots @notjustabooksims @simnights ❤ Please check the challenge post for the full and original format, and anyone else who wants to participate can also reblog it as an ask game!

Crazy Ex Girlfriend 4x17 I’m In Love
Stray thoughts
1) So… they’re doing a big reveal where Rebecca will tell who she has chosen right in front of everyone they know? Now I’m kind of hoping she chooses herself (although please please let her be with Greg!) because if she is about to choose one of the guys then she’ll be breaking the other two’s hearts in a very uncalled for manner…
2) Oh, Tim, what’s going on with your life, dude? First, the vibrator song, and now he’s happy not to be spending Valentine’s day with his wife…?
3) Dream ghost!!! Because Rebecca, in true Rebecca fashion, had another poop attack and fell asleep on the toilet… Dream Ghost is going to tell her about her future. Will we get to see what Rebecca thinks her life will be like if she chooses each of the three men in her life?
4) Oh!!! This is her future!!!

5) That was a cheap trick, show. You got me. Because she’s now imagining her future with Nathaniel and Josh…

…and she’s not entirely happy in any of them.
5) Oh, god, I knew going into this I’d be an emotional wreck but I wasn’t expecting to be crying by minute 6. There’s just something about watching Rebecca shouting in her own face, demanding to know why she’s not happy. I think I know the answer. I think she just has to choose herself, I think the title of this episode is about Rebecca finally choosing to love herself first and foremost, and above all.
6) And she got the answer, straight from the horse’s mouth…
REBECCA: Tell me. Huh? Tell me why you're so sad. Why aren't you happy with Greg? Huh? I mean, what's wrong with him?
REBECCA 2: There's nothing wrong with Greg. Or Nathaniel or Josh. They're all wonderful.
REBECCA: Okay, then why am I not happy, with any of them? Don't… don't I love them?
REBECCA: You do love them. The problem is, you don't know who you are.
7) Is working at that firm the best fit for Paula if she can’t take the cases she wants to take?
8) Hmmmm.
JOSH: I just want to be in love. Get married, have babies. I'm ready now. She has to pick me.
This really sounds like Rebecca could be replaceable. He’s not talking about wanting or imagining all of these things with her, he just wants them.
9) George has great plans for his future. He’s growing a ponytail. Nathaniel, on the other hand, seems to have nothing going for him except the possibility of Rebecca choosing him. I kind of wish they had brought up the fact that he was bored with his job before the finale?
10) I love them. I’m gonna miss them so much.

11) I loved this!

There had been some references to how Rebecca creates the musical numbers in her mind but never had we seen if the other characters were aware of what she does or how they react to it. it was a small moment, but it felt like a huge pay-off for four seasons of storytelling in the form of musical comedy.
12) This medley ruined me…
youtube
I was a sobbing mess all throughout, I was crying and trying to sing along, and each song brought up so many memories and feelings. I knew I wasn’t emotionally ready for this episode, but damn, I really wasn’t ready.
But thankfully, I also laughed…

13) OMG TIME JUMP!!! And we can tell thanks to George’s lustrous ponytail!!

So her big decision has nothing to do with choosing one of the guys? But what happened on Valentine’s day a year ago?! And everyone’s there except for Nathaniel, Josh, and Greg, or so it seems...
14) Good for you, Valencia!

15) April adopted Hebecca, and she and Darryl are having a baby!
16) Was… Rebecca… masturbating in the hot tub?

I wouldn’t put it past her, and we know Hector is already very acquainted with how much she enjoys self-gratification, but this would be going too far, even for her…
But… let me say that as much as I love the joke, I can help but feel that Heather was underused even in the finale.
17) I did really enjoy the whole back-and-forth between White Josh and Rebecca. She had no idea what had been going on in his life – two massive fires, apparently – and he admitted to never quite liking her, which is absolutely true.
18) Now, this is what earns a “Respect” as a response…
PAULA: The thing is, is, uh and I say this with so much affection, um, either we do this, or I quit.
BOSS: What?
PAULA: I love this job. But I am not gonna walk around with a hole in my heart because there are people out there who need me and I'm sitting up here on my ass in a fancy suit. I have to be true to who I am inside. So. Thanks. I loved it here. Bye.
BOSS: Paula, wait. Let's talk.

19) Nooo. It can’t be him. It has to mean something else…
Which brings us to another person. The person I care about very much. And he's really the reason I'm here. Josh Chan.
I really hope it only means that he’s the one who gave her the courage to find out who she is or something, or I’ll be pissed off.
20) OH THANK GOD! It wasn’t him.
21) $80 dollars a month, Rebecca? I guess she still continues to be terrible with money.
22) Josh has a girlfriend. I hope he doesn’t mess it up this time.

23) And it’s Nathaniel’s turn now…
NATHANIEL: You don't, you don't have to explain. You only get one life. And you got to live that the way you want. I think everyone deserves that.
I’m really proud of Nathaniel. He truly came such a long way, and even if they are not together, his love for Rebecca had such a wonderful impact on him – he became a better version of himself because of it. I was absolutely floored by how mature and understanding he was, I wanted to hug him so badly.
And he quit his job and he got a job at the ZOO! TALK ABOUT A DREAM COME TRUE!

24) it’s fUCKING GREG’S MOMENT AND I’M NOT READY FOR THIS.
25) What a wonderful moment!
PAULA: What are you doing?
REBECCA: Uh, sorry, nothing, nothing.
PAULA: No, that's not nothing. That's You're staring off into space, like you do. You do that a lot. What's happening when you do that?
REBECCA: I don't want to tell you. It's weird.
PAULA: Oh, come on, any weirder than the many, many weird things you and I have done since we met?
REBECCA: I've just… I don't know I've never told anybody, except for the Dream Ghost and Dr. Phil.
PAULA: What?
REBECCA: What the hell? Okay. When I stare off into space, I'm imagining myself in a musical number. That's how I sometimes see big moments in my life, as musical numbers. And because I do that, so does the show. And by show, I mean the very popular BPD workbook acronym, "Simply Having Omniscient Wishes.” So, yeah, I see myself in these songs.

26) Paula is suggesting that Rebecca should write down the songs that she creates in her mind and that’s what I’ve been saying all along!!!
27) Oh my god, here come the waterworks again…
youtube

What an amazing reprise and what a great way to bookend the story! I’m crying but I swear these are happy tears! It’s been such a long time since Paula and Rebecca stood holding each other’s hands outside a party and singing about how Rebecca should go after Josh. And here they are, still holding each other up through thick and thin and being each other’s person. It’s such an amazing moment for so many reasons. I can’t help but be in awe at such a wonderful portrayal of female friendship. It’s amazing that the person that helped Rebecca figured out what she wanted to do was Paula. It wasn’t Josh or Nathaniel or Greg. It wasn’t her therapist or her mother. It was her best friend, the person that’s seen her at her best and her worst and has accepted for the wonderful, weird, chaotic mess that she is. This scene also conveys a much more important and impactful message – that all you need is, well, you. It’s all right inside you. You just have to be ready to find yourself.
28) Oh, the wonderful, wonderful callback!

29) And her break-up with Greg did not feel like a break-up at all. She was basically telling him that she couldn’t be with him right then. And even though he said he wouldn’t wait, he’s still single… I swear to god, I’ve been dreaming of a Settle for Me reprise, and if they deliver one I’ll probably die.
30) It was so fun to see Rebecca working hard and learning how to sing and play instruments and write lyrics. But this part was what really got to me…
REBECCA: I came to this town to find love, and I did. I love every person in this room. Each and every one of you.
I’m so happy she finally realized that! That’s what I’ve been saying all along. She’d always been so worried about finding one person or one thing that would make her truly happy, and there were so many people and so many things that did it for her and she just couldn’t see it.
31) Oh, wow…

32) What a wonderful ending to a wonderful series! It truly was everything that I had hoped for and more. I really wanted the end of the show to be about Rebecca, self-love, and self-awareness, and the show delivered that in such a beautiful and moving way. I know I’ll cry every single time I listen to that medley! I was kind of concerned about the heavy emphasis on the rom-com aspect of the show in the last few episodes, but I’m really glad that was put on the back burner and it was left kind of open-ended – although I’m positive wherever she is, she’ll end up with Greg. This weird, wonderful show has meant a lot to me, and I can’t wait to revisit this story. I’m glad Rachel and Alina got to tell their story the way they envisioned it, and I think it was a terrific idea to end the story sort of media res – just when Rebecca was about to start a new chapter of her life.
I’m too emotional right now to properly convey exactly how much this show means to me and how impactful and groundbreaking I thought it was for many different reasons, but I’m certain the legacy of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will live on, and I truly can’t wait to see what the wonderfully talented people behind it have in store for us in the future. I know it will be wicked good.
Goodbye, Rebecca. Goodbye, West Covina. It’s been a wonderful journey!
32) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi.Thanks!

Materials To Learn Chinese
Hello and welcome to my first post on Studyroll! My target language is Mandarin Chinese so I thought I would share what I use to learn it.
Here are a few notes: Everything said in this post is my opinion. You do not have to agree with me and you do not have to take the advice. Also all links are to Amazon.com
Textbooks 📚
Yes, you can find pretty much everything you need to learn a new language. But sometimes it is better to have a physical book in front of you that you can mark on.
Boya Chinese
My number one favourite curriculum/ textbook is Boya Chinese. Boya Chinese is a series of 9 books starting at the very basics (Elementary 1) to the fluent learner (Advanced 3). This book is used in Chinese Universitys and in Chinese international schools to teach English speakers Mandarin. It uses a combination of vocabulary, language points, real world conversations ( there is nothing like “mike wants to ask the cashier for 473 watermelons”), writing exercises, and speaking problems to make sure you get a well rounded learning experience.
Within the first two books you will learn 1,000 characters and by the time you finish the very last book you will have learned 10,000 characters.
My tutor got me an E-book of Boya Chinese, but you can find them online for between 20 USD and 30 USD.
Buy the first book here
Integrated Chinese
I personally have never used this book but I have many friends who have recommended it to me. It is quite similar to Boya Chinese. The main difference I have seen in this book is that there is way more English. If you want to have more English while learning then this book would be best for you. This book is more popular in western countries than Boya Chinese; they are almost identical but IC (integrated Chinese) is most popular.
If you would like to learn more click here for a review.
There are four levels of books from beginner to advanced.
This book cost quite a bit more. So if you are looking for cheap this is not the book for you. This book coast anywhere between 40 USD and 50 USD.

Apps 📱
A common misconception is that you can learn an entire language using apps like Rosetta Stone or Memrise. While I have nothing against using apps for help, a language has many more components to it. It is not just learning vocabulary words and sticking them together. Here are some very useful apps to help AID you in your language learning journey.
Pleco
Pleco is a Chinese English dictionary that has many functions. You can type in pinyin, English or Chinese characters and find the meaning. You can see the stroke order, the compounds that use each character, other pronunciations, sentences, and much more. This, in my opinion, is so much better than a traditional dictionary.
Note: It will not show the stroke order for every character.
This app is free on both IOS and Android

Strokes order
This app is pretty self explanatory. You input a character and it shows the stroke order. I use this for the characters that Pleco will not show.
Free for both IOS and Android

Chinese Skill
This app is best used as just a vocabulary app. You can use this app at any level due to the function to test out of certain categories. I use this to expand my vocabulary outside of my textbook.
Free for both IOS and Android
Get for IOS
Get for Android
Anki
This app is the best app for memorising I have ever used. I use this app for the vocabulary in Boya Chinese. You simply create a deck (you can also download them) and input the question and answer. It uses a method of learning where when you are just about to forget it, it will give you the question again. This allows it to stay in your long term memory and you won’t forget it as quick. The great news is, that it is not only for language learning. I use this for my regular school work too. I recommend this to any student of any kind.
Unfortunately it is 25 USD for IOS but free for Android
Get it for IOS

Hello Talk and Hi Native
These two apps are almost exactly the same except hello talk you get to message people. Both apps are language exchange apps where you get to interact with real people. Hi Native you ask questions about your target language/ countries of interest and people answer. It’s kinda like yahoo answers but for languages. Hello Talk is more of a chat system. You get to talk to people who are native at your target language and help others with their target language (your native).
Both are free on both IOS and Android

Workbooks 📝
Workbooks aren’t essential, but if you don’t want to print 400 pages just to write, i suggest getting a few.
Mi Zi Ge / Tian Zi Ge
These books are just simply character writing books. There are no activities and no problems. They are just used to write characters. Even though these books may seem boring, they are very useful for learning characters.
You can get both books for between 4 USD and 10 USD
Buy Tian Zi Ge
Buy Mi Zi Ge
Collins easy Learning Chinese Characters
This book will teach you the stroke order of the most used characters. This isn’t the only book out there that teaches you stroke order, but it is one of the most famous. Stroke order is extremely important in chinese so I wouldn’t pass up on this book.
This book (and similar bookds) usually cost between 10 USD to 30 USD

Websites 💻
Chinese grammar wiki
This website tells you everything you need to know about Chinese grammar. This page offers detailed articals about grammar, culture and (mainly grammar). If textbooks are more your style, they also have a textbook for the same purpose).
Click here to visit Chinese Grammar Wiki
PeraPera
PeraPera is actually a browser extension. You install it to either Firefox or Chrome, and when you move your mouse over a Chinese character it will tell you the dictionary definition along with the pinyin.
Clike here to download PeraPera
Purple Culture
Purple culture is by far my favourite website. It is mainly a website to buy books about Chinese language/culture from, but it is also very useful in other ways. On the website there is a tab labeled “Chinese Tools” this is where you can convert from simplified to traditional characters, convert to pinyin, create worksheets, and much more.

Happy Starbucks Sunday
and my goodness, can you believe it's already April...?
I'm so sorry I'm late getting this up; I'm having a lot of trouble with... typing aphasia? That's what I'm gonna call it. I know the word I want to put down, and I can usually type without looking, but all the sudden one hand's going faster than the other, and I'm a key off, and the total word is gibberish, so I delete it and try again, and I can't recall the original word... Frustrating. And not a great sigh of health in any light. :(
I hate spring (Spring?--depends on the style guide... :/ ) I hate it so much. (Rambling ahead. Feel free to skip, but if you want to know WTF is going on over here, well, thought spillage is below.)
Too many stressful/unpleasant happenings in my past during this time of year, including, but not limited to: my beta and me, scrabbling to push Beautiful Oblivion from the doc into publication, as my mother shoved helpings for 12 of Easter cake into tupperware to 'take home and enjoy;' several years prior to that, having a very tense college grad party in my parents' living room (it was raining) while my on-and-off tried to be super friendly and sweet to me as if to prove to my parents that we were still on (but we were totally off); and several years prior to that, using my new powers of being 18 years old to leave rehab ama without anyone being able to stop me...
So, for the here and the now, things are awfully shitty. I'm trying to sort of plot out my current demons (which, in short, seem to be a BPII 'down' with a side of overwhelmed based on the number of appointments/what they're all for/panic if they change dates or times). So, with DD carefully prodding me, I'm going 'back to school' with my autism and emotional journaling workbooks to see if it's possible (on try number...3 I think this is?) to get a handle on what is going on with the neurotransmitting tadpoles up there in the grey matter, and why the fishing net is always too slow or woven too loosely to catch them and give them a good talking-to before releasing them back to do their jobs--correctly this time. We have a giant desk blotter, too, and it's going to be put to use again to write out the entire week, instead of looking at the Google Calendar, which puts me in this weird false sense of security that all we have to do today is "dots."
Anyway... Physical health is shitty (again, in a nutshell)-- lots of headache, and lots of exhaustion/CFS symptoms. Docs upped my dose of IVIG to try strengthening my immune system even more--attempts 1 to 3 at lvl 20 haven't worked, so a couple days ago we tried lvl 30. IDK if I'm supposed to feel a difference. As of yet, I do not. This coming Friday I'm having a spinal procedure under sedation to check for CSF leakage and apply a blood patch, if needed. It's attempt level, like 120,000 to track down the nexus of he headaches and try to make them better. I have, like 1 gram of hope, and about 99 grams of prediction I will end up nauseated on a sofa for at least a day, because CSF imbalance sucks rocks. Other random upcoming appointments that may bring better news are a consult for superpubic catheter (which involves another surgery, but would solve a horrible and embarrassing problem of the more private variety), and 2 appointments to get me into an updated wheelchair (maybe so I'll be able to self-propel, which I can't in what I'm currently in--just a facet of how the wheels are made).
AND now for today's SS plan:
-Take your prompts- keep them brief, please. I want to get to more than 1, if possible. Here are some suggestions to inspire you:
-Springtime is the worst time (college exams coming up/other end-of-academic-year shit; ballet recitals/exams; competitive sports-that's drawing from Chasing Ghosts' Steve and his swim team)
-Seasonal Allergies--please take note-- I WILL NOT write folks "coming down ill with allergies." It's a little medically unrealistic (I mean, I know allergies feel terrible, but anyone with Google and body familiarity and a healthy dose of common sense will probably know the difference between fever-flu-sick and snotty nose-clogged sinuses-sick. Also, it can sometimes --> snz, and while you're cool, and I give you mad props, I just don't exactly understand how it works, and I'm not a participant in that community. What I WILL DO, though is a mild play off the "oh, you look sick." "Nah, I think it's just allergies." *time passes* "Uh, yeah, I think I am sick."-trope. Must be handled with care, though, so it's not a dupe or a dud.
-In Powers/No powers, some kind of Easter fiasco involving the boys and the Barton clan. (I know I tell you no food stuff, though that often is a thicker barrier than strictly necessary to keep me away from my squicks and triggers and discomforts.) What I'm temporarily loosening the lock for is the inclusion of a religion mix up, where Bucky as a very non-practicing Jew winds up very weirded out at a "commercialized" Easter family party (like with a ham and kids opening Easter eggs and such). Feel free to bring any other ideas, and I'll ok/include/tweak them as I think they can fit in.
-Chasing Ghosts, college stress x3. Foci can be James (exams, studying, doing drugs/slipping sobriety, etc.), Steve (swim team, exams, studying, making everyone shut up and stop bickering while he watches the Oscars, etc.), or Tasha (ballet shit-short notice performance, wrangling kids for recital-and doing any of it whilst high/hungover, the obvious college exams, taking drugs to stay awake, bickering with the boys about self-care, prepping for a no-notice social worker visit, etc.). As always, more ideas welcome.
-Ask game--I've prepared a new one, which is hopefully fun. It only runs on a single topic (movies), but I think it will elicit some conversation, especially if you guys comment back with some of your favorite films in the category as well.
I'm going to try to stay on a little later into the evening to make up for starting soooo late. Sorry!!
Regarding Schedule--
Next week's SS will proceed normally.
The following Sunday is Easter, and I expect to be able to proceed normally, but we haven't made plans yet (and there's always a chance the in-laws or my roommate's parents will call the night before and expect us to host them from -hour- to -hour- without regarding things such as our grocery budget, sleep/wake cycles for small humans and big people with CFS, and the fact that they've been on airplane in the past week and posted pics on social media sans-masks--I put on a mask to cross a parking lot.)

How To Self-Study Japanese

Learning Japanese is no easy feat. It requires dedication and hard work, especially if you have decided to self-study. If you are absolutely brand new to Japanese, here are some fast facts about the language to get you started:
* Contains two alphabets: Hiragana and Katakana
* Each alphabet has 46 phonetic characters (72 in total)
* Kanji is a Chinese based script that has thousands of characters
* You’ll need to know about 2000-3000 characters to be considered fluent inn Japanese writing (according to the JLPT)
* Japanese is an SOV language (Subject - Object - Verb)
* There are no tones in Japanese, but there are intonations (yukuri vs yukkuri)
* There are 4 politeness levels
* Japanese uses verb conjugations like European languages
* Japanese uses particles to mark parts of speech (example: は and が )
* Often times the subject is omitted in sentences if the subject is clear based on the context
*Pronunciation in Japanese is perhaps the easiest part of learning the language
* It typically takes 5-6 years to gain fluency in Japanese
So now that you have the absolute basics of the language, here is the best way, I have found after 7 years of language study, to learn Japanese.
1. Begin Learning Hiragana and Katakana (in that order)
First thing you want to do is begin learning Hiragana. It’s the most basic script you can learn and is learned by children first in grade school. Katakana is for foreign words like English cognates. I used Kodansha’s Hiragana workbook and I highly recommend it. After you’ve grasped Hiragana, you can begin learning Katakana. Fortunately, they follow the same phonetic order making memorization just a tad easier (example: Ka, ki, ku, ke, ko). As you learn the writing, begin to remove your dependence on the English alphabet and begin writing everything in Hiragana or Katakana. I used Kodansha’s Katana Workbook as well and I recommend that book as well.
2. Begin Learning Easy Phrases and Words Through Children Songs
Whenever I begin learning a new language, I try to get a feel for the basic vocabulary by memorizing children’s songs. It’s a great way to create a visual and auditory connection with the new words. I know it’s a little childish, but it was very effective for me! I have never forgotten a single word from those songs and they helped me cement the essentials and that is very very important. The songs are usually in Hiragana and Katakana, so that’s good practice for remembering the those alphabets too! Here’s a Genki Japan playlist with songs for the weather, numbers, colors, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3won-7W3Js&list=PLE2F2C912A1DCD5B2
3. Download or Buy Tae Kim’s Japanese Grammar Guide
I don’t recommend any other textbook more than I recommend Tae Kim’s grammar guide. It’s incredibly well written and it goes against the norm a little bit. It encourages you to begin learning Japanese from the lowest politeness form and work your way up, since it makes WAY more since to do that. He goes from the plain form and then teaches you to add the politeness levels and conjugations to them. Traditionally, textbooks teach the polite forms first and then ask you to go backwards in a way. So counter intuitive, but the reason they do that is so that you can begin speaking immediately to adults. That’s all fine and dandy, but you aren’t learning the language properly. Period.
4. Begin Learning Kanji with WaniKani
I’ve heard people sing praises about WaniKani, so I’ll keep this short because you can read about how awesome it is all over the web. In short, it’s a free website that helps you learn around 2000 essential Kanji. It uses the spaced repetition method meaning after you’ve learned around 20 or so kanji/radicals, it will move those to the “to be reviewed” so that you can come back to them later. You will have to keep reviewing them until they’ve been moved to the ‘burned’ section. In other words, it’s burned in your mind and properly memorized. I highly recommend it.
5. Use Fluent-U for Immersion
At some point you’ll need to know how Japanese sounds and how to understand it. That’s where Fluent-U comes in. It uses modern media to help you learn Japanese. You learn through studying anime, tv shows, music videos, commercials, and popular Youtube videos. It is also uses space repetition, but most importantly every vocabulary word is taught with real world examples from real movies, tv shows, etc.
6. Take it Slow in the Beginning The key to learning Japanese is to master, nay, DOMINATE the essentials. Take your time while learning the basic grammar points and practice, practice, practice them. Use your new vocabulary to make new sentences with your new grammar and do whatever you can to practice. 7. Create a Schedule and Stick To It If you haven’t already, go check out my post about creating a self-study schedule. It will get you what you need to create your own self-study schedule to learn language intensively. Once you have created a self-study schedule, do what it takes to stick to it. You only become fluent in a language with hard work, not good intentions alone. So get it done! I also like to use an app called Habatica. It makes a game out of getting into getting daily tasks accomplished and crossing stuff off your to-do list. You level up, get armor and rewards and pets. It’s so cool! You can turn language learning into a game with this app! Hope that helps! :)

It should be noted though that Dai basically wanted to do the same thing as Darwin but because of particular magicians not wanting him to put certain things in his book because they wanted to keep their so called status, it hindered the greatness of this book. Dec 27, The thing that makes the Vernon’s “Revelations” so important is that the annotations that Vernon made to the book are HIS, and he pretty much considered erddnase Erdnase book to be his bible and cornerstone of his card magic.
Just complete your order as normal, and within seconds you’ll get an email with your gift certificate. I refer to it quite a bit. Darwin’s annotations shed new light on the history of the various moves and effects, provide technical insight into their proper execution, give cross references for further reading and include hundreds of obscure bits of information.

Shrimp Farming Guide

Buy Now
The Quantities of Shrimp that We Eat as Consumers is Shocking!
Equally Shocking is What is Happening to the Fishing Industry and the Price of those Shrimp because of the actions of a certain oil company…
“ATTENTION: If you have a shrimp farm business or are about to start one, this may be the most Valuable Letter you will ever read…”:
I was blown away by these numbers!
“A Multi-Billion Dollar Business”
The Shrimp Business Is A Multi-Billion Dollar Business and Is a Business where literally anyone can make a six figure income in…and you don’t need a University Degree to do it.
Americans currently consume more than 1 BILLION POUNDS of Shrimp each year!
This amounts to over 4 POUNDS for EVERY American annually.
Over 5 Billion Pounds of Shrimp are produced each year globally – either through farming or wild catch.
The Shrimping Industry is a $20 BILLION Dollar Global Industry and a large chunk of the demand for the product lies right in the United States.
A major domestic source of Shrimp (the Gulf of Mexico) is all but ruined!
Now…Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room here:
Can You See The Huge Opportunity In Starting Your Own High Profit Shrimp Farming Business?
From: JT Abney Dear Friend: My name is JT Abney and I have something to share with you.
With the economy still in turmoil and unemployment continuing to be in shatters in most places, people are getting desperate and grasping at straws to find a solid, sustainable business to support their families and, better yet, future generations. Schemes and frauds are rampant and every marketer has to be closely scrutinized.
“Shrimp Farming is about to explode as an industry”
So if I were to reveal to you (which I will in a minute) that Shrimp Farming is about to explode as an industry, you’d rightfully ask “Just who is this guy that’s talking to us about Shrimp Farms?”
Well…for starters I’m not just some marketer in a plush office who saw an opportunity on CNN and decided to write an ebook. That’s not the case at all. In fact, many generations of my family have worked and made their livings in the Gulf of Mexico. Below is a picture of the actual oil platformthat my grandfather worked on in the 1950’s, as my dad grew up on Grand Isle, La.
I continue to live and work on the Gulf Coast and see firsthand what this disaster has done to businesses and families alike.
Unfortunately, this is just the beginning of the economic hardships to come and it sickens me to think of the environmental and economic losses that are multiplying by the minute.
An era of many generations prospering off of the abundant seafood coming out of the Gulf may be coming to close but there IS a way to build something sustainable from the ruin that has been tossed on our doorstep.
I see an opportunity and a demand in the market so have put some very serious time into creating a valuable product to help fill that need – but I am also a very interested party.
“This is My Home…”
This is my home and my hope is also that some of the fisherman and displaced businesses will find their way into some new opportunities such as this one, because it’s a beauty!
Whether you are one of the many unfortunates affected by the oil spill or simply a savvy entrepreneur who knows a hot market when they see it, information on starting and running a Shrimp Farm is scarce!
Are you frustrated wiith the limited quality of Shrimp Farm books on the market? Are you disappointed again that they are difficult to follow? Not enough information? Do you have questions about raising shrimp properly that need to be answered?
You have tons of questions about raising shrimp and you’re sick and tired of searching for information from all over the place, struggling to get the true and complete facts.
If you have any interest at all in shrimp farming…and if you want to find out what type of farmed shrimp you should grow…or you just want to figure out whether you should start a shrimp farm or not…keep reading on for the most important information you need to know.
“Raising Shrimp For Profit”
If you’re serious about Raising Shrimp for profit, there are several questions you need to consider:
Making a mistake when farming Shrimp can be deadly for your Shrimp…not to mention costly, frustrating and downright depressing.
You also need to consider:
“How to Farm Raise Shrimp”
If you or one of your loved ones wants to know how to farm raise shrimp from start to finish, but have a lot of doubt or questions…
…then this could be the most informative letter you have ever read.
Shrimp…The Essential Facts
“Everything You Need to Get Started”
Resources, Resources, Resources
Loads of resources you’ll need to connect with a huge number of shrimp larvae and aquaculture suppliers across the globe.
Find everything you need to get started rasing Shrimp including: equipment, larvae, supplies, medicine, feed, feeders…you name it!
Do NOT get this if…
Before I go on…let me ask you a few questions:
If you answered “Yes” to any of the above questions, DO NOT STOP NOW, what you are about to read below could help you change your life…
Consider this:
Obviously, there’s hard work involved. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just selling “the dream” and… unfortunately that’s all it is.
So if you’re looking to develop financial freedom and financial independence…the reason why I’m doing this now is because I know things that you may not know. I know what’s happening with the U.S. dollar. I know what’s going to happen with the economy in the United States and around the world.
If you think things are tough now, hold onto your seat.
The next few years are going to be tougher than you can imagine. The governments are propping it up. And they may succeed in keeping it propped up, but it’s on false promises and it’s being propped up on false hope. At some point, it will crash.
The time to build your business is now.
The good news is…today is your lucky day. I’ve assemble some of the greatest materials on starting a Shrimp Farming business ever created. Never before has there been such a wealth of material all in one place.
There’s no risk whatsoever with The Shrimp Farming Guide
I’ll give you immediate access to all of the materials right away.

That being said, I mean it very nicely when I ask that if you don’t have the intention of going through and taking action, please don’t order. I know the power of the material and it would just be a waste of your time and mine if you don’t even intend on reading it, agreed?
If you’re the type of person to read it and review it as well as take action to make your dreams come true faster than you ever dreamed possible – I can’t wait to send you your guides.

Tips and Tricks for Success for New Entrepreneurs
Sure Fire Ways to Have a Successful Business Venture!
To become a successful entrepreneur you need good ideas, a little luck, money and lots of hard work. 90% of successsful people fail, which means to gain something (profits, equity, etc) you must first lose something (your initial investment). Phat-farm is a multimillion dollar company whose owner Russell Simmons lost 10 million dollars in the first five years. A lot of experience and resources are not required but to become a successful entrepreneur you need to have passion and persistence.
Turning everyday ideas into business is what makes an ordinary entrepreneur extraordinary. This talent or gift is what makes them unique. Most start with very limited resources and jump ahead of their competitors through personal effort. The moves have to be fast and good decisions need to be taken to gain share in the market and move foward against bigger competitors.

“Still Worried About $28…Gimme a Break!”
So why am I charging $28 for this guide? Well, I’ll tell you. I thought about what to charge and I can charge just about anything I wanted. Most people think that $28, once they get their hands on the materials…is way too cheap for it. And that’s why I’m planning to raise the price pretty soon.
The main reason I decided to charge at least this much for the materials is because I would have people who were willing to take action. Winners. Real doers. Nothing I hate more than to listen to somebody talking about wanted to be in any sort of business and not be willing to take any action to be there.
Everybody thinks you have to be really smart to be successful and it’s just not true. You just have to get the information that you need to get started. And then find other smart people.
One of my heroes in life, Henry Ford, said “I can answer any question in the world if you’ll give me 30 minutes”. That’s because he had a golden rolodex of experts that advised him.
Most People don’t have any idea that Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light bulb had no idea about science, none at all. He had no training, no formal education in science, but he had experts around him that knew everything there was to know about chemistry and electricity and all of the other sciences that he used to invent the incandescent light bulb.
This is the true demonstration that Napoleon Hill talked about in his great book Think and Grow Rich. All you need is desire coupled with specialized knowledge and an action plan to achieve any level of success that you want.
Now, I have the specialized knowledge and I have the action plan. Do you have the desire? If not, this isn’t for you. If you’re just looking around reading on the Internet, dreaming about what life might be like if you had a business, don’t waste your money.
But if you really think you’re going to take action, if you’re really going to do something, if you’re really going to make your move, make your mark in life, then go ahead and order this information right now. It will be the smartest investment you’ll ever make.
This is your opportunity to shine. Are you going to actually do something? Or are you just going to sit there and kick some more tires? Come on. Hit the button below and let’s get started.
