never forget that every single piece of marketing for Our Flag Means Death literally straight baited the audience to the point where there were many online reviews by cishets about it being a “bait and switch”.

the core plot of the show is a romance and NO ONE HAD ANY IDEA WHEN THEY STARTED WATCHING IT. no one! people just living their lives browsing hbo max just saw “silly pirate comedy with famous people” and fuckin watched that shit!!!!!

I remember looking for ANY indication that this show was gay or even a romance at all, from ANYTHING official from hbo max. there was literally NOTHING. only the creatives like David Jenkins and Taika Waititi were saying ANYTHING about the romance. and even then, in “official” promos/interviews the romance was very strangely absent from discussion.

It’s fucking crazy to think about now because this is The Gay Show and it’s got rainbow marketing all over it. but you must know. You must understand. How fucking weird it was to be in this fandom in the beginning lmaoo

Thinking about this moment. I'm not sure anyone has ever just touched his beard like that (or at least not in a very long time). He's Blackbeard. The beard is part of his whole thing. And everywhere he goes, everyone recognizes him as Blackbeard. He's surprised when Stede initially doesn't. And nobody would fucking dare touch Blackbeard's beard uninvited, not if they want to keep that hand.

But tonight he's not Blackbeard. Without the ship and the leather and the tattoos visible he's not immediately recognizable. He's just some guy. He's Jeff the accountant. And incestuous white ladies feel entitled to just invade Jeff the accountant's personal space and touch his little beard bows.

And he's not expecting it. It's not helping that he's already stressing about trying to figure out all that silverware. But normally nobody would dare. Earlier in the episode he could have a guy snail forked for being racist. But they all just laugh at Jeff for threatening them.

Hey there lovelies. I'm hoping that life is treating you kindly. It was so very nice to see everyone have such a great day on the 30th. I know how hard it's been since the cancellation for so many folks, so it's beautiful to see so many people having so much fun-- and seeing David participate!

I wanted to suggest, if you haven't gotten a chance to-- this would be a great time to rewatch OFMD. I know a lot of folks have watched it a lot.. and others haven't had the heart to do so after the cancellation. I can't tell you how cathartic watching it again has been. I've watched it over and over again.. and every time I get to experience the joy and wonder of this positively beautiful show we got to share. If you're not ready though, please don't feel bad. Grief takes a long time to cope with...and if you need support, lean on your crew. Everyone is experiencing grief differently, but we're all here together. What we got was a stunning work of art, that if we don't get an s3 is imperfectly perfect in it's own way. It's what brought so many of us together. It inspired so much wonderful art, fic, gifs, friendships, meta, kindness, confidence, and love. It boosted some of our lovely cast & crew, and gave us a place to grow together. If we DO get an s3 one day, it'll be yet another chapter to this exquisite book of queer joy.

I hope you're getting some rest lovelies, be kind to yourself today if you can <3

OFMD's 2 year anniversary reminded me of perhaps the funniest aspect of how my OFMD brainrot hit.

I collect lighthouses. It's a hobby I inherited from my grandmother, and they're like all over the fucking place in my house. It makes going to thrift/antique stores super exciting because you'll often find one. Super cool and fun thing to collect.

But imagine being me. This show seems tailor-made for me in every way. I started watching late March, just in time to catch the last few episodes as they dropped. So imagine I just got my shit rocked for the first time, yeah...

And then I try to go about my life the next day and my house is basically wall-to-wall covered in OFMD merch. Is it any fucking wonder this show had me by the throat instantly

Our final feature of this week's AOTW is the lovely and always kind Hugo ♥️ Getting to know her these past few weeks has been such a joy and it's so not a surprise that they're such an earnest and fluffy writer, with oodles of love for their friends and the show. Please read on to find out about Hugo's secret sorrow (the word she thinks she uses a lot):

What's your writing process like? Do you start with the beginning or the end? Do you write in order or as the scenes come to you?

I generally start with the beginning and write forward, but then I like to outline retroactively and see if there are any chunks that would be better suited elsewhere in the story. I sometimes have to scribble down an idea for a later scene when it comes to me, but then I sometimes forget to return to it, or figure out that it doesn't fit after all. And sometimes it's not so much a scene as it is a *vibe*, and sometimes it's just, like, a mini-revelation about the emotional arc, or some other little tidbit. I'm definitely still trying to find the right process, though, because mine is absolutely unreliable and I haven't finished anything at all or even really managed to work meaningfully on anything in an age and a half.

Favourite Ed or Stede characteristic or mannerism that are dear to you (Ed liking marmalade, Stede and burying his feelings, etc)?

Yes, Ed's sweet tooth is important to me. Yes, Stede saying one single, heavily veiled thing once and being like, "I have now bared my entire soul to you, right?" is important to me. Ed's brilliance is non-negotiable. Their mutual softness is very important to me. Yeah, their shitty fucking dads are really important to me. Both their childlike qualities and their age. Shearwater pointed out that Stede has so much love to give that he's never been allowed to give before and Ed needs so much love and never having had anyone to give it to him, and I can't stop seeing that now. The way they instantly know one another on a level neither of them has ever experienced before.

What is the one word that you think you use a lot?

HEEDLESS for fucks' sake. Also STEEL as a verb. Is it the double Es? Why am I like this?

Do you have a beta reader? Have they made you a better writer?

YES. I have been swapping betas with @xoxoemynn for, oh my god, two years this August (happy almost-anniversary, darling) and not only has Marianne made my writing better (it was at her prompting that I ended up writing some of my very favorite paragraphs I have ever written) but beta-reading *her* writing has made me a better writer, and also a better thinker. Marianne is absurdly generous with the sandbox that is her brilliant mind and her open heart, and thinking and talking through ideas and theories with her has taught me so much about storytelling.

Why OFMD?

I think the characters, both as written and acted, have so much complexity and nuance, and there's so much room for interpretation, which makes this such a fun sandbox to play in. The canon can support practically any reading. Also, this fandom boasts a really mind-boggling amount of talent, and some of the absolutely loveliest people I've ever had the good fortune to meet.

it's my ofmd fic anniversary ✨

one year ago today, i posted this little fic called First Snow, and holy shit a lot has happened since!!

not only have i written 300k more words since these first 3519 words (not all published yet), i've made the loveliest friends and we have a whole second season 💗

i don't think we talk enough about how Tamaki and Mirio as a gay couple like they are the gay rep for UA like, those guys were shying around eachother in middle school, they hooked up their first and became public in second year and EVVEEEEERYBODY knows about Tamaki and Mirio dating. they got 2 or 3 years worth of anniversaries under their belts and that's just being out about it, they celebrate when they first became met/became friends. Kirishima is so envious of his work study buddy having been in a relationship so long and he wants to be like that. "ITS SO MANLY" Deku congratulates Mirio when he worked at nighteye's actually fuck canon, nighteye is alive still and he also congratulates Mrio saying shit like "I celebrated anniversaries with All might before we broke up, don't be like me keep this one." but then he goes into the "Actually it's not my fault we had creative differences and i was a side compared to Dave but it's whatever." Deku,Bubble girl,Mirio and Centipeder heard this story sevral hundred times before. Somebody once said Nighteye was AllMight's stand in for Dave like AllMight and Dave were together but he wasn't in america anymore so he just picked up Nighteye as a side thing and they broke up and that's why he wasn't on speaking terms I GOT THE TEA & IMA SPILL IT like can you imagine Deku having this Information? "ALL MIGHT YOU DATED AND DIVORCED AND DIDN'T TELL ME?"
