MK (Lego Monkie Kid)

"Oooooh boy where do I begin. MK the Monkie Kid is the protagonist of the story but he has *so many issues*. He wants to be a good person but has a whole lot of impostor syndrome and is convinced he will only hurt people the more he tries to save them. He is convinced that every major villain in the show is his fault, even as far as misremembering/changing up some events to put blame onto himself He also has an absent mentor figure that was supposed to help him but guess what he had to figure out all his powers on his own so abandonment issues go brrrr. He has so much anger toward his mentor Wukong but he just *bottles it all up* (common theme) Also he is so trans and adhd coded. First, MK is a nickname. We don’t know his real name, but it is v much implied he used to go by something else. He and his friends also puts a lot of emphasis on manly stuff like ‘I’m a big boy!’/‘he’s a Monkie *Man*!!!’/‘im the smartie boy, the plan man!’ He also has trouble focusing and listening to other people, is sometimes blunt and he is VERY interested in Sun Wukong and the journey to the west (Chinese classical novel that the show is based on) and just in general always needs constant reassurance and support from his friends. He is often compartmentalizing his feelings and internalizes a lot of fear and blame is also suppressing a part of himself that scares him. (Which, same) He loves his friends so much and tries so hard to keep them all safe, even hiding his own problems and worries from them as an attempt to protect them. He wants to go back to season 1, back when each episode was a villain-of-the-week kinda story, with no world-destroying threats. But nope, he saw the horrors, and he can never go back to the bubbly Monkie Kid from the beginning. Also he is terrified of spiders :>"

1. is there a common piece of writing advice that you disagree with? alternatively, is there one you think (generally) most people should follow?

oooooh okay! generally i dislike any hard absolutes like "don't use adverbs ever" because i mean. no piece of advice like that will ever be universal and it's important to consider what Your Piece of writing needs rather than trying to fit a set of ~arbitrary guidelines~

as for advice i think works, i think consistency in writing will always be key to improvement. i like. very heavily stagnated in actual writing after covid (i was like. good lord i was 15 then. wild) because i got bogged down trying to make my book Perfect. and i think if i had actually written more during that time i would be a much better writer now! more writing = more improvement and practice makes pretty damn close to perfect etc etc

2. you can have dinner with any author, living or dead. but the catch is that after the dinner, you and that author will team up against a third writer in a no holds barred cage match throwdown. which 2 authors do you pick?

OOOOH ok. i'm currently very enamored with andrew joseph white and lee mandelo's writing because they both write GORGEOUS prose so maybe one of them? OOO or r.f. kuang . i think tolstoy should get got in the cage match. cry old man

oh god what discourse WOULDN'T rr spark. i definitely think having an aroace mc weaponize someone else's attraction to him is probably um. discourse worthy. my top fear is that someone unironically ships lahar (romance and sex repulsed aroace) with anthony (horrible white savior who has no semblance of self) some other notable things that happen in the book:

The Copper Beeches pt 1

Like I said last time, this was one of my favourites as a child, so I assume that I'm going to remember what's going on pretty quickly. But then again, maybe not.

"To the man who loves art for its own sake, [...] it is frequently in its least important and lowliest manifestations that the keenest pleasure is to be derived. It is pleasant to me to observe, Watson, that you have so far grasped this truth that in these little records of our cases which you have been good enough to draw up..."

Starting out with a compliment from Holmes to Watson here. Also not an arrogant one, as he follows this up by stressing that he feels Watson embellishes, although it is unclear whether he thinks Watson is embellishing the stories themselves or Holmes' abilities. So maybe not. Also, I like the fact being raised again the Holmes seems to prefer the weird little mysteries of life than the grand mysteries.

"you have erred perhaps in attempting to put colour and life into each of your statements instead of confining yourself to the task of placing upon record that severe reasoning from cause to effect which is really the only notable feature about the thing."

How dare you try to make the stories interesting with your Romantic descriptions of storms and your acerbic descriptions of people, Watson? How dare! It should only be a dry, factual account with no editorialising!

Oooooh... I'm not sure where Watson's coming from here, as I don't think Holmes has said anything particularly egotistical here. Maybe the bit about Watson choosing the cases that best show off his method? But even that doesn't strike me as particularly egotistical. He doesn't say 'you choose the ones that make me look best'. Perhaps I'm just not understanding the nuances of the Victorian language.

"You have degraded what should have been a course of lectures into a series of tales."

Holmes does not understand what the people want. I feel like maybe I can hear a bit of ACD in this part being irritated at the fact that his silly little detective stories are so popular. Although I believe this is quite early in the publication order, so maybe I'm just reading into it based on what I know of him later on.

Holmes clearly started out with a compliment, though, and then the conversation got away from him.

Sherlock Holmes had been silent all the morning, dipping continuously into the advertisement columns of a succession of papers until at last, having apparently given up his search, he had emerged in no very sweet temper to lecture me upon my literary shortcomings.

I guess Watson didn't see any of it as a compliment. Also - Holmes is reading the paper! Clearly for a specific purpose, but still.

"Pshaw, my dear fellow, what do the public, the great unobservant public, who could hardly tell a weaver by his tooth or a compositor by his left thumb, care about the finer shades of analysis and deduction!"

But you were just saying Watson should have written purely about the method... I guess your argument must be that he's writing for the wrong audience and he really should be writing scientific case studies about your methodology. Boredom does not make Holmes very generous towards the general public it seems.

"But, indeed, if you are trivial. I cannot blame you, for the days of the great cases are past. Man, or at least criminal man, has lost all enterprise and originality."

This is such a melodramatic Holmes. I am here for it. "Watson! The criminals are all boring, Watson. There's nothing interesting left in the world, Watson! It's all downhill from here. I will never be entertained again!"

"It may turn out to be of more interest than you think. You remember that the affair of the blue carbuncle, which appeared to be a mere whim at first, developed into a serious investigation. It may be so in this case, also."

I mean, also yes, because they freed an innocent man, but still, it amuses me to see that referred to as a serious investigation.

And I can't resist an opportunity for goose giffery.

She was plainly but neatly dressed, with a bright, quick face, freckled like a plover's egg, and with the brisk manner of a woman who has had her own way to make in the world.

Violet Hunter is awesome and I'm really glad Watson wasn't particularly rude in his description of her.

"'That will do,' said he; 'I could not ask for anything better. Capital! capital!' He seemed quite enthusiastic and rubbed his hands together in the most genial fashion. He was such a comfortable-looking man that it was quite a pleasure to look at him.

OK, no. You haven't even said anything yet. This is creepy. Not comfortable, creepy. There are so many creepy men in these stories, I swear.

"'And what salary do you ask?' "'I had 4 pounds a month in my last place with Colonel Spence Munro.' "'Oh, tut, tut! sweating—rank sweating!' he cried, throwing his fat hands out into the air like a man who is in a boiling passion. 'How could anyone offer so pitiful a sum to a lady with such attractions and accomplishments?'"

That's ~£400 a month in modern money, so roughly £4800 a year.

But again, she has barely spoken in this conversation. What does he know of her accomplishments? I mean, he might have read her CV. But the fact he starts with 'attractions'. Methinks the man is not looking for a governess. Creepiness escalates.

"'This is all quite beside the question. The point is, have you or have you not the bearing and deportment of a lady?"

I mean, I know 1800s misogyny, but surely if you're hiring a governess you want them to... teach things. Not just how to stand up straight and walk with your shoulders back? I know deportment can also relate to manners and behaviour, but I cannot stress enough that pretty much all she did was walk into the room and he said 'that one'.

Not going to quibble with Miss Hunter about taking the job. More than double the income of her last job. And it's coming to her through the agency, so has at least the appearance of respectability about it. But she does have the good sense to think it seems too good to be true.

"'It is also my custom,' said he, smiling in the most pleasant fashion until his eyes were just two little shining slits amid the white creases of his face, 'to advance to my young ladies half their salary beforehand, so that they may meet any little expenses of their journey and their wardrobe.'"

This also makes me uncomfortable. And I can't tell how much of that is intentional and how much is coming from my 21st century brain seeing the paternalistic, possessiveness of 'my young ladies' and 'any little expenses'. I've got to assume that at the time there would at least have been a little discomfort from the condescension he seems to be showing here. But the attitude might have been so common that it might not have made any sort of impression.

I had a coworker once who used to refer to me by putting 'little' before my name. It meant I never liked or trusted him at all. I might have been the youngest person in that office and I might not be the tallest person in the world, but it was patronising and awkward and I never forgot it.

"As I was already in debt to my tradesmen, the advance was a great convenience, and yet there was something unnatural about the whole transaction which made me wish to know a little more before I quite committed myself."

I knew I remembered liking her.

"'One child—one dear little romper just six years old. Oh, if you could see him killing cockroaches with a slipper! Smack! smack! smack! Three gone before you could wink!'"

Uh... uhm... I...

"I was a little startled at the nature of the child's amusement, but the father's laughter made me think that perhaps he was joking."

Yeah, you and me both. The startlement, not the joking part. I think he's probably serious about that. (I do not remember the child in this story, although I remembered she was a governess...)

I think maybe you just want to think he's joking because you need money and £50 up front is an amazing deal.

"Your duty would be, as I am sure your good sense would suggest, to obey any little commands my wife might give, provided always that they were such commands as a lady might with propriety obey."

My 21st century brain says 'oh, this is a sex thing', even though I know it absolutely won't be. But still... this sounds like a sex thing, right? Like he and his wife are into governess kink stuff. It's like one of those ads that used to be on craigs list.

"In dress now, for example. We are faddy people, you know—faddy but kind-hearted. If you were asked to wear any dress which we might give you, you would not object to our little whim."

Ah, now I remember! Not everything, but I definitely remember the dress.

Still seems like a sex thing at this point, ngl. Which, no kink shaming, but you have to actually inform the person of what they're taking part in. That's called consent. It's important. You can write that down if you want.

"'Or to cut your hair quite short before you come to us?' "I could hardly believe my ears. As you may observe, Mr Holmes, my hair is somewhat luxuriant, and of a rather peculiar tint of chestnut. It has been considered artistic. I could not dream of sacrificing it in this offhand fashion."

Ah, echoes of the Red Headed League. Clearly she has to look a very specific way for whatever purposes he has for her.

"It is a little fancy of my wife's, and ladies' fancies, you know, madam, ladies' fancies must be consulted."

Ugh, this guy. I swear. He's like paternalism personified. Icky vibes all over him.

"'Do you desire your name to be kept upon the books?' she asked. "'If you please, Miss Stoper.' "'Well, really, it seems rather useless, since you refuse the most excellent offers in this fashion,' said she sharply. 'You can hardly expect us to exert ourselves to find another such opening for you."

Fuck this lady. She clearly has no concept of 'duty of care' and is driven entirely by capitalism. She just watched this weird little meet-ugly. And she's like 'well, if you don't take that job, I guess we won't be looking for anything else for you. So maybe you should just set aside your insistence on bodily autonomy and go with the creepy guy who seems to have a governess fetish and no understanding of informed consent.' Hello financial blackmail.

"Well, Mr Holmes, when I got back to my lodgings and found little enough in the cupboard, and two or three bills upon the table. I began to ask myself whether I had not done a very foolish thing."

I am very upset for her right now. I didn't understand her situation this much as a child. I got that she needed money and there needed to be a story, but I didn't get how dire Violet Hunter's position actually was. She has next to no money left and her place of employment has pretty much said that they won't give her any more work. No wonder she talks herself into doing it. I cannot blame her at all. Capitalism sucks and she needs to survive.

"'Dear Miss Hunter:—"Miss Stoper has very kindly given me your address, and I write from here to ask you whether you have reconsidered your decision. My wife is very anxious that you should come, for she has been much attracted by my description of you."

FIRST of all - Fuck you once again Miss Stoper for giving out her personal details to people. Fuck you very much. Just 'oh, hey creepy guy you can totally have her personal address'. Goddammit woman. You are the worst.

SECOND of all... 'she has been much attracted by my description of you' the more this guy talks, the more the sex vibes are pouring off this. I know it's not that. I know it would never be because this was published in 1892 in a mainstream magazine. But you cannot look at that sentence and tell me that it doesn't just shout 'sex thing' at you. I wish I knew whether any of that would have also been inferred by contemporary readers, or if it's just the modern viewpoint colouring it. But yeah... People had fetishes in Victorian times. Sex trafficking definitely existed in Victorian times.

"we have one belonging to my dear daughter Alice (now in Philadelphia)"

Is Alice in Philadelphia? Is she? Is she secretly buried under the floorboards? Or maybe she is in Philadelphia because she ran the fuck away from you. Also... place your bets as to whether Alice had short hair that was a 'distinctive shade of chestnut', wherever she may now reside.

"I confess that it is not the situation which I should like to see a sister of mine apply for."

Holmes is concerned. And I see an edge of his words about Mary Sutherland here, because he doesn't try to argue or change Miss Hunter's mind. Possibly because of his weird misogynistic view that you can't change women's minds because... I don't even remember. Although, what are her alternative options at this point... starvation?

"Mr Rucastle seemed to be a very kind, good-natured man. Is it not possible that his wife is a lunatic, that he desires to keep the matter quiet for fear she should be taken to an asylum, and that he humours her fancies in every way in order to prevent an outbreak?"

Here I do not agree with Violet. He did not seem to be kind or good-natured. He seemed creepy and patronising. Maybe this is just because I am reading from a modern perspective. Or maybe it's because I'm a woman reading this and a Victorian man wrote it.

Was ACD trying to convey a pleasant man and just didn't understand how creepy he came off? Given that we are meant to have a feeling of foreboding, that doesn't seem likely. But Violet Hunter is so insistent that he was a nice man. She mentions it repeatedly. But all I'm getting are creepy vibes.

It's possible this is just a man who thinks he's writing a nice guy, but is actually writing a creep without realising it. Or it's a guy deliberately writing a creep, and making his female character too naive. But she doesn't seem naive. She seems pretty on the ball, just desperate for money. My brain finds Violet's insistence that Mr Rucastle came across as a pleasant person difficult to reconcile. It seems further than her just talking herself into believing it because she needs the money.

And placing all the weirdness on the wife when you have only his word for her part in this seems rather foolish to me. But she's trying to justify the weird vibes as best she can, I guess.

"There is something distinctly novel about some of the features. If you should find yourself in doubt or in danger—" "Danger! What danger do you foresee?"

Please see aforementioned comments about sex trafficking and also remember that bit about the cockroaches. That was weird and a little bit serial-killer-y.

"At least," said I as we heard her quick, firm steps descending the stairs, "she seems to be a young lady who is very well able to take care of herself." "And she would need to be," said Holmes gravely. "I am much mistaken if we do not hear from her before many days are past."

Honestly, I think the bigger concern would be never hearing from her again.

If anyone I knew came up to me with a story like this I would just be 'Nope. Nope. Nope. I will give you money. You can live with me. Do not go to the Copper Beeches. You will never be seen or heard from again.'

I definitely remember more of this one. Not the fine details, but the broad strokes of the plot. But it is interesting to come at it as an adult and see the layers that I didn't as a child. I'm really enjoying it still, though. I'm glad I still like it.

oooooh how do i pick… i love pretty much all canon information (within phantom hourglass) about him… i think for the past few months my favorite canon thing has to be his whole role in the final boss. phantom hourglass’ final boss makes me want to eat drywall (pos) and i’m obsessed with how linebeck plays into it and how it could be read as a further extension of his arc or a forced regression or… it’s just a really, really cool thing he’s involved in, and nothing else like it really happens in the rest of the series, and it’s like… hell yeah man go be the only non-villain character to be the final boss of a zelda game. at a certain point it stops being me purely enjoying canon and then starts being me having fun with piecing together anything that could even slightly stick and following every branching idea that starts with linebeck ending up as the final boss, and it’s all very fun.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character

hmmmmm... as something i don't think i've clearly shared here, i think he really, really likes snakes. not to the degree at which he likes cats, but he loves all kinds of snakes. he knows about snakes and does research about snakes and picks up snakes out in the wild without first explaining that 1) he saw a snake and 2) it’s not venomous. linebeck’s a snake guy as well as a cat guy.

i suppose i really enjoy seeing people just… talk about him? about his motives and history, what they like about him, i like it when the fandom treats him as more than a one-dimensional villain, it’s not much but he’s honestly not a character i’m tooo invested in, so i just like seeing what the people who really like him do with him. i like when people make him a little silly, it feels like it’s done best with the person doing it really loves ganondorf.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

i honestly can’t quite remember what my first impression of ganondorf was; i started with the original legend of zelda, and a link between worlds was the first one i finished, so i was familiar with beast ganon before ganondorf, and likely saw ganondorf for the first time either in some youtube video or in a smash bros game. so i think my first impression was a sort of… oh neat he exists. no real strong feelings, played ocarina of time and og hyrule warriors and figured he was just neat. now, since i’ve been seeing more of what people who really like him have to say and generally engaging with him more as a character, he’s easily one of the most interesting loz characters and one i really want to learn to write in some way, since only recently i’ve really written him in earnest (as opposed to an incidental character or something).

I technically don’t have a comfort movie but my top 2 are

1.) The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep - the story of a little boy befriending the Loch Ness Monster, it’s super adorable

2.) Up - As sad as the opening of this movie is, I just love the story. Doug and Kevin are my favorite characters but special shout out to Russel and Carl.

My comfort tv shows:

1.) Once Upon A Time - I often call this show my “soulmate show” and I know a lot of people even the fans, criticize the writing, this show means so much to me. I was a huge Disney fan as a kid, so to see these characters in a more modern story got me intrigued. LITERALLY when I first saw the trailer in a MOVIE THEATER, I got chills. I was instantly drawn to the show and started it back in middle school. It got me through high school. It’s the show I turn to the most when I’m anxious or stressed.I know a lot of the episodes by heart and I’m not sorry about it. My biggest comfort character and OTP come from this series: Emma Swan, and Captain Swan. I felt like I related to Emma on a very personal level, even if I didn’t share every experience she had. This show taught me about hope and optimism even in the most difficult circumstances. It taught me that True Love isn’t just “love at first sight.” In fact, it gave me the standards I have for how a Significant Other should treat me (so I have a pretty high standard). I can listen to the OST of this show and remember the scenes some of the songs played over, I also end up tearing up because of it. I don’t think there will be another show (I’m sorry PJO tv show, I still love you) that will hold my heart (HA) and soul as much as OUAT will, even the cast themselves were special to me. I remember seeing their interactions and interviews in the San Diego Comic Cons as well as the bloopers on the dvd versions of the series and I felt like they were a little family. I will rewatch it a billion times and never get tired of it. The finale still makes me break down in tears. Other fave OTPs: Outlaw Queen, Snowing, Belle with literally any other character besides Rumple

2.) NBCs Grimm - Started this show the same time as OUAT, in middle school and it got me through high school. I don’t have a comfort character here but the characters DO mean a lot to me, especially Monroe, Nick, Rosalee, Juliette and Trouble. This show is the reason I became interested in the Gabriel Knight series (it has an overall similar story). I learned about folktale creatures I had never heard about before,like Krampus. It has a lot of references to other stories (Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Bears, Frankenstein are just a few I can think of) with their own twist on it, but was different than OUAT. They also included their own lore for the creatures in the world as well as the titled “Grimm”, which made me even more invested in the story. I remember crying when I first saw the finale. 3.) Lucifer - The idea that the Devil can be redeemed? *Chefs Kiss* I don’t watch this show on repeat as often because of.. personal family reasons. This show got me through high school into early college. But I felt myself relating to Lucifer (ironically), and one of the episodes where he forgives himself? THAT made me cry. 4.) The Percy Jackson series (Including the tv series as well as the books + the Heroes of Olympus) - Got me through middle school and into early high school. I was a huge Greek Mythology fan so having this modern take on the gods and goddesses was really cool. When I found out that the Heroes of Olympus was a CONTINUATION. I HAD to read it, (if only for my boy, Percy). I actually had a birthday where my cake had the Camp Half Blood logo on it and I got the “Blood of Olympus” as a birthday gift. With the release of the new tv show, my love for the series has rekindled, I’ll even try to read the new books. Comfort character: Percy Jackson. My comfort video games

1.) The Gabriel Knight series (specifically, The Beast Within) - My most current hyperfixation; yes, I know it’s a 30+ year old point and click adventure game. I was introduced to it by.. let’s say an old friend..because I really liked Grimm and he told me it was very similar. Low and Behold, it WAS. It got my through the pandemic as well as the rest of college. The stories of the first two games are, personally, my favorite. Although the series is very tragic and not at all the “happy endings” I was used to, I was still invested, particularly after my comfort character became Baron Friedrich von Glower (even AFTER I learned he dies 🥲yes, I cried here too) became SO salty invested that I started writing fan fic, drawing and even buying the games for myself to fill the void and continue my denial. I also related to him on a very personal level. I call this series, “The One I Used Necromancy On” because I (personally) feel like I rose it from the dead (ironically considering my comfort character) and I continue to find people who like the series or are just getting into it. Favorite OTPs: Angelwolf/Klower, Gknight and now Knightamura.

2.) Alices Warped Wonderland - I was introduced to this by the same.. old friend.. that introduced me to the Gabriel Knight series. As you can guess by the name, it is a retelling of Alice In Wonderland, except with a bit of horror and trauma added to the story and this version of Alice is Japanese! The story is VERY emotional, especially the sixth chapter and the endings, I even cried in one of the endings. Although I kinda related to Alice more, my comfort character became Cheshire Cat. Favorite OTP: None, I ship Cheshire and Alice platonically though.

3.) Night in The Woods - Got me though high school, but didn’t become a comfort media until early collage. As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, this game hit close to home. The Existential Horror/ Cosmic Horror beautiful ties into the struggles of mental illness, and the acceptance of change. Comfort Character: Mae Borowski, who I related to personally mainly because of her struggles with mental illness (although not the same). This game (along with the Gabriel Knight series) has some of my favorite dialogue, ever. A few other interactions between the characters, as well as the ending made me cry (see a pattern?). Favorite OTPs: Greg x Angus (idk their ship name).

4.) The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask (SPECIFICALLY) - Even though I’m not the biggest LoZ fan, and I’ve only ever seen other people play this game, it still left an impact on me. How the whole story revolves around putting others happiness over yourself, even if it means doing it repeatedly to (seemingly) no avail. The fact that even after Skull Kid destroys Termania over and over again because he felt like his friends abandoned him and they forgive him and STILL consider him their friend? The true victory not just beating Majora, but saving and healing Termina and it’s people, including the Skull Kid? Chills. Goosebumps and tears EVERY TIME. Favorite Character: Skull Kid, this version of him SPECIFICALLY

MY ATLA LIVE ACTION S1E7 THOUGHTS

EP6 - EP8

We’ve reached the North Pole! It’s a fairly eventful episode, but it felt like it went by fairly quickly. I’ve always liked the Northern Water Tribe storyline, so I’m glad they seem to be keeping it largely the same, though there are definitely some questionable alterations that I’m not sure I can get into without giving spoilers in this section, though I should cover them in the live reactions.

Yue was delightful, though distinctly different in this live action series in a way I don't quite know how to phrase right now. 

My biggest problem with this episode was Katara, I think. She’s just not giving the anger she should have, given the situation. I suppose this version of canon overall really watered down her character’s anger in general, which was a huge staple of the cartoon, but this is the first real time where it’s really fell flat for me.

wait lmao this is the first we’ve seen of water healing. this is the first we’ve HEARD of water healing. we didn’t have any time with jeong jeong so that wasn’t a convenient excuse for katara to discover it. i feel like there was some kind of missed opportunity there, let’s not get into the habit of introducing something out of the blue. being fair this was also something i felt the cartoon had a problem with, given the healing showed up out of nowhere in the jeong jeong episode and the ENTIRE lion turtle energy bending thing in the finale

oh so overt sexism IS a plot point. it’s almost like i thought that because they erased sokka’s sexism arc that they’d get rid of the northern tribe sexism arc, since the writers clearly don’t like being overt about sexism. it’s almost like they think sexists can’t have a change of heart

Build Up Episode 6/7: Team 9th Place v Team First Place

Hello and welcome back to another recap in my Build Up recap series! In the previous one, we saw the judges straight up get it wrong. Straight facts. In this one, we finish episode 6 and break into episode 7, and along the way watch the 9th place team go up against the 1st place team. Will there be a rebellion? Only one way to find out.

Dahee calls the next two teams up on stage. Oooooh! It’s Jay’s team and it’s Woong’s team! The judges are excited for these combinations.

LTR: Hayoon, Jay, Wumuti

Wumuti is spokesman for his team-- I love how even now no one has mentioned the fact that he is actually from China and speaks Korean as a non-native speaker -- and he introduces the team as the Vitamins. He’s Vitamin T, Hayoon is Vitamin H, Jay is Vitamin J. All of those are NOT REAL VITAMINS and I am VERY ANGRY about this POOR NUTRITIONAL ADVICE 

In the previous round, Wumuti and Kang Hayoon performed Falling and came in first place; new recruit Jay performed Dangerously with Bitsaeon, and lost. I don’t think you need much reminder as to who they are, do you?

LTR: Intae, Woong (s w e a t e r), and Minwook

Lee Minwook is his group’s spokesman, and he introduces his team as Woong-verse team, a reference to the fact that in the previous round, Jang Intae and Minwook performed Universe (though it wasn’t really shown) and came in 9th place; new recruit Jeon Woong performed Kick It with Seokhwa, and lost. Seokhwa was eliminated, unfortunately. 

You probably remember that Woong is in a group called AB6IX; he’s one of the most famous people who went on the show. Minwook is from a nugu group called Newkidd. I really like his singing voice and wish the show gave him a little more love. Jang Intae is in a duo called 415, under the same label that promotes Stay-C, and while he doesn’t have my very favorite voice on the show, I still think the show is handing him the short end of the stick far too often. So yeah, all three of them are debuted idols. 

Minwook says that his team is ranked 9th and taking on the 1st place team, and says it would be fun if the underdog won. Wumuti says “yes, it would be entertaining, but this isn’t an entertainment show, this is a contest!” Woong is like, “You’re right! No entertainment allowed! We’re here to SING!! We don’t do entertainment!” Minwook and Intae have to playfully hold him back as if he’s going to tackle Wumuti. It’s some of the most fun smack talk I’ve seen on the show, and Jaehwan leaps to his feet again to applaud. 

VCG asks Woong how he feels about “almost being eliminated.” We’re reminded that Woong’s name was called last when the judges were picking their ten survivors. That doesn’t mean he was their last choice, to be fair; they may just have announced his name last for the entertainment of it. 

Anyway, Woong is embarrassed by basically everything that’s happened to him so far on the show, including the way that many teams sort of fought over the right to go up against his team, like they thought his team was a pushover.

Well, lucky for Woong, he has main character energy! And Intae and Minwook are here to be the Trinity and Morpheus to his Neo. 

They’re in a strange glowing green room with a few metal folding chairs, a tv tray, and a tablet. What more do you need besides a nice powder blue cable knit s w e a t e r?  

Minwook speaks up first and says, “First of all, don’t worry, I spoke the building owner and arranged this rehearsal space so we don't have to worry about that.” He’s obviously kidding, and he makes the other two laugh. (It’s extra funny because they’re actually at Brand New Music, which is Woong’s agency, not Minwook’s). Then he reassures Woong that they recruited him thinking of him as a weapon, not a liability.

Minwook and Intae ask Woong what kind of song he might want to sing, and he says he wants to sing something more emotional and less rhythmic. In other words, a ballad, not a pop song. 

He interviews that he’s made mistakes choosing songs in the past and he wants a chance to actually show his vocals. I agree! He says that he’s really outgoing and talkative, but wants to show that he can really sing. 

Minwook and Intae have a song in mind: Enough by Hoppipolla. Hoppipolla was a project band that debuted after winning a survival show, and they were active from 2019 to 2021. I’d never heard of them, but I listened to Enough while I was curling my hair and I ended up listening to it a few times in a row because I liked it so much. Going on the playlist for sure. 

It does seem to me that part of what makes Enough so engaging is the cello part, and I wonder whether having the song be primarily about singing will be enough to really make an impression on the judges. But it sure is a pretty song. In fact, I may have listened to it for two hours straight while working a bit today. That may have happened.

Woong says he loved the song the moment he heard it, and they decide to do it.

They begin rehearsing. There’s no way you can guess where they are! Definitely not at Brand New Music. Why would you think THAT?

Woong is from an idol group and isn’t used to singing ballads in tight harmony. So Minwook and Intae help him a lot. He really wants to get it right, and they seem patient and kind. 

The performance begins.

My thoughts:

This was really pretty, and it grows on you when you listen to it a few times, too. I don’t think this will beat the other team, but it sure is a nice performance of a pretty song. 

Woong has been the underdog this whole time, but I think he’s the best singer of the three in terms of natural vocal color. As the “center” of the song, he begins and ends the performance on a good note, so to speak. Also, look at that fuzzy s w e a t e r! Good stuff. 

For me, the biggest liability was Intae. He has an excellent sense of pitch and obviously is extremely powerful, and that’s good, but his vocal color is extremely nasal and to me kind of unpleasant. He also doesn’t have a great control over his dynamics, so he’s often a bit too loud and overpowering in the harmonies. I feel bad saying that when he’s obviously such a sweetheart.

Right after he and Woong sing in harmony for a few lines, with Intae encouraging him the whole time, Woong grins in triumph and Intae looks so proud. Aww! 

Minwook has a really nice vocal color, but he lacks agility and he sounds a little uncomfortable on some the higher notes. (Agility is your ability to go from note to note as you sing, hitting each note squarely along the way.) He just gets a wee bit shrill here or there, too. I still really like his singing voice, though.

Some of the harmonies sounded nice, but a few of them were unbalanced, and others sounded, I don’t know, “off.” Like someone was hitting the wrong note.  But I loved the staging and the way they smiled so much. And like I said, it improves on a second or third listen. 

Let’s see what the judges say.

In the MNET edit, we get an instant replay of Woong’s first few lines, which do indeed sound lovely. People sit up and take notice, and also seem to enjoy the first section of harmony between Intae and Minwook. 

Solar likes it. I think. I guess?

Mostly, it looks like the judges are liking it.

I actually don’t think I’ve ever seen Eunkwang just relax and enjoy a song like this. 

When the guys are done, there’s a slight pause, and then the judges applaud hard. Backstage, the guys in the green room let out a collective “waaaaahhhhh!” in approval. Park Jeup says to his teammates, “That was the best performance of the day,” and Seunghun agrees. 

The moment they’re really done, Woong runs toward Intae whooping, and then over to Minwook, just so happy and wanting to celebrate with his team. 

Awww. 

Dahee asks the judges what they thought of the performance. Jaehwan says that he thinks all three of them were influenced by each other, and all three of them showed sides of their voices he hadn’t heard before. They were really synced and the performance really moved him. 

Wendy liked how they smiled at each other and looked happy -- it was beautiful, she says. She tells Woong that he can really pull of this kind of song. 

Jaehwan mentions that Woong did the beginning and end, and that it was really… wahhh! 

Guest Judge Guy says he wonders why didn’t Woong sing like this before? He thinks that the team worked well together. 

As they start to walk off the stage together, with Woong making little happy chirping noises, Eunkwang calls after him, Woong! You’re good at ballad songs! 

Well, there are three more minutes of the episode and Dahee calls up Jay, Wumuti, and Hayoon. It’s obvious that they’re not going to perform in this episode!

Dahee asks Hayoon what he thought of the first performance, and Hayoon says it was good and he enjoyed it…. 

Jang Intae has no time for your bullshit, Hayoon.

… but that like their colorful clothes, they can turn the mood around and win. 

Backstage, Woong is like, “Are you saying that we were PLAIN?” 

We get a little snippet of the song Jay’s team will be doing -- Fever -- and then that’s it for the episode.

Ok, on to episode seven! You guys, I’m almost caught up! Nothing like having the week off from having to travel for work. Oh, here's a link if you need it.

So, after a spoiler-iffic preview of what’s to come, we dive back into our battle. 

The top tier trio takes the tage. 

The judges seem impressed just by their existence. We’re reminded of their past successes, and Kang Yayoon interviews that they’re like the Avengers.

Flashback to their rehearsal period. They’re meeting in this purple room.

That one chair is bad so it has to face the wall. 

Wumuti points out that they sort of won first and second and place in terms of points. Jay wants to show the judges something new, but Wumuti and Hayoon want to do “what they’re good at”, which is pop.

Jay does NOT like this.

Jay reminds them that VCG said he’s worried that Jay hasn’t sung any songs in Korean so far. Hayoon says “but this is a death match!” as if Jay doesn’t know that. Jay’s whole point is that he wants to listen to the judges to avoid losing.

Wumuti tries to play peacemaker and find a song that does both things: show a new size, but also build on what works. He suggests something “jazzy and exciting.”

At first, Jay doesn’t like the idea of doing a song by JYP, but he ends up liking the song Fever, saying that it seems fun and like something he’d be good at.

So, JYP is the head of JYP entertainment, home to Twice, Stray Kids, Itzy, 2am, 2pm, and NMIXX (and former home to Got7, Miss A, and Wonder Girls). He writes a lot of songs for these groups, which is why at the beginning of the video he’s playing the opening chords to Feel Special by Twice. I respect his songwriting ability and the way that he lets his idols take time off for their mental health and whatnot. I also find him personally the most cringey person in all of Kpop. Sigh. (If you’re wondering who the actress is in the video, it’s Jo Yeo Jeong, who was in Parasite.)

The song is like, whatever. I mean, it sounds just like any other song of its genre. It sounds a lot like the Peggy Lee song of the same name, honestly. But fine, ok, I could see it being fun for this trio to cover. 

Hayoon is worried about the dancing, so Wumuti helps him practice.

Hayoon is not a particularly apt student, bless him. But Wumuti is super patient.

They’re practicing in that same space that we saw Wumuti and Hayoon practice in before, with the rack of t-shirts in the background and the art of a bunny on a moon with roses in the background. 

It’s performance night. How will they do? Everyone is excited.

My thoughts:

I don’t think I’d ever love this because I find the song oddly boring. But I can respect their really good performance.

You guys know by now that I haven’t always been the biggest Kang Hayoon fan, but I really enjoyed how he sounded here. Both singing and rapping sounded pretty great to me. I’m really surprised. He did something different with his voice, bringing the nasality under control without sacrificing his unique vocal color. Nice work, Hayoon. 

Jay sounded great as always. He did slightly different styles of singing here and they all worked. His rapping…? I’ll say this: Jay is a spectacular singer. 

Wumuti just keeps getting better. I don’t remember being blown away by him as a vocalist on Boys Planet but he seems to be really great on this show. 

It’s hard to say more about either of them because they’re the same as ever: clean, with enough texture to keep it interesting, no nasality, no pitchiness, good breath control, good agility -- everything good, nothing bad.  Staging wise, I liked their choice of background and outfits. Jay’s facial expressions always just touch the boundary between “fun” and “cringey” but the other two were fine with that. I liked the slide + point dance moves they worked out : just enough to make it fun without using the energy they needed to sing. Also, I like Wumuti’s glasses.

In the MNET edit, of course, the judges love it, but also can’t believe the rapping. 

Wendy can’t believe Hayoon’s rapping. 

Neither can Baekho.

Yep, it’s worth an instant reply. And at that point, Lee Minwook backstage says to his teammates, “well, it’s over.”

Jaehwan gets up and dances. 

When Jay lets his jacket fall off his shoulder….

… Team Taco backstage is like, “Hey, that’s against the rules!”

During the dance break, looks like everyone is into it. 

When they’re done, everyone applauds and looks shocked. 

The judges say…

Jaehwan says it was “delicious” and made him dance.  He wants to change his name to “Jay Hwan.” Then Jay makes a bit of a mistake with his Korean and they all laugh at him for a while. 

Baekho also praises Jay.

Solar praises Wumuti, who she says was in control of the stage, and praises Hayoon’s rapping. 

So, who will win? The judges put in their votes….

They say it’s really hard to choose. I think they’ve said that pretty much every time. 

Commercial… And then the judges’ votes are revealed.

Red is Jay’s team and blue is Woong’s team. Baekho, Wendy, and Jaehwan voted for Woong’s team, while the other four voted for Jay’s team. 

Jay’s team takes it, 4-3. I think they’re a little humbled that it was that close.

And I actually think that Woong’s team is proud of making it so close. 

Hayoon makes polite noises into the mic, and Wumuti praises the other team sincerely. 

Woong says “I wanted to win at least once! I’m sad that I couldn’t win, but I think I gained something even more important -- I made some really good friends.” 

That leaves just one round to go -- Team Lastplace against Team Ballad.

(Evillious chronicles explained. Part 2!)

Oooooh. There is DEFINITELY enough of killing in the series, but I'm not sure if Levia or Behemo had any grudge against Seth though (I did see a little fan made gif of Behemo stumping on Seth in anger... can look it up, if you want to!). And, as far as I'm aware, they just have basic looks of the Vocaloid, but their hair color might change, depending on reincarnation...

This one part is more of info damp for in-between main arcs, on what happened in novels, I was able to pick from the fandom wiki to this. And oh boy, there's a lot!

So... as we left last time on fact that Levia and Behemo setting off to space on a ship to travel across the galaxy with other 70 people (and Seth's there too, by the way! I don't know, if I mentioned it before, but he's VERY important in this story, other than just nearly pushing Levia to do an interdimensional suicide. I'll explain it later). I don't know, how much time has passed, but eventually, the ship comes across a planet (or the planet's moon, still not sure which one) and the crew decide to stay there to build new society on it. But... landing is rough and (I think) everyone on the ship dies. With this, their souls turn into new Gods, demons and spirits of this world and most also take animal/plant forms, but some also seem to have human forms too.

From those, I can name, there are (also, sorry to all of the EC fans, who might read it and not find a character here. I'm only going off what I can find on fandom wiki and songs) :

Behemo and Levia themselves (take form of a dragon (not sure if it's a two headed dragon or each has their own body) and people call them Dragon Gods or just Behemo-Levia)

Catherine (Takes form of a white whale)

Litch and Michaela Arklow (Litch is a big black bird or crow, I never understood it, and Michaela is a little green bird. And, this won't be really relevant until later, but that Michaela is ACTUALLY the Miku/green haired girl from Daughter and Servant of evil! How small that world is...)

Josephine (this one is more of a theory, I've seen once, but I liked it, so decided to throw it in. And she takes form of a horse (the theory also says that THIS is also THE Josephine, Rillian's favorite horse, mentioned in "Daughter of evil". Again. How small that world is)

And the six out of seven sins demons (or more like 5 and half, because Wrath is split between Seth (yes, he is Wrath demon) and another guy (presented as Kaito), who will have a huge role in next arc). So yeah. Here's a bit of Evillious chronicles lore, I don't know if will be relevant to our AU, but I still decided to share it. Heh

OK I. Recognize Michaela, from DOE. I think she was referred to as “the green haired girl”, and I know Rillian (Rin?), sent Meiko?? To go kill her because she was in love with that incarnation of Kaito, who was the blue knight. I also remember Rillian’s brother/servant (Len), taking Rin’s place at the guillotine at the end of DOE and in SOE.

Even if it’s not relevant, I’mm still glad I know Eve;a little bit of lore‼️

1: Character you don't particularly like, but will defend vehemently when people dislike them for the wrong reasons: i’m a little out of the loop on General Fandom Opinions right now, so looking back i think it’s probably veth? i never felt that connected to her as a character but there was a lot of bullshit that people said about her that i disagreed with. the Veth War Criminal tm Discourse was very stupid, the ‘she’s married she could never have feelings for anyone else’ idea was very stupid, i remember a lot of takes about her just not being a good/realized character which were… very stupid. veth was a whole character i just ended up pretty neutral on. (if i was answering this question during c2 i probably would’ve said caduceus but honestly the more time passes the more i like him.)

6: NPC you would most like to see as the subject of a Tales of Exandria series: is it cheating to say astrid bc like, i just want more astrid. i don’t need more backstory i just wanna see what she’s doing right now this second. oooooh or they should do something with j’mon sa ord i feel like c1 teased a lot of really interesting history with them and i would like to see it.

so why was sam's funeral only such a tiny part of the episode? we didn't even get to see the paramedics holding their radios up like at jeff's💔 hey at least she actually got an onscreen funeral though, unlike lev, fenisha, and robyn (and noel but i understand there wasn't really anything they could do about that cause of covid)! this was the start of the problems with handling character deaths on the show that i keep going on about! everyone was so mad about this at the time and it has only got worse since, we've just stopped being so surprised about it! i remember someone saying that at least lev and fenisha not getting funerals meant that they couldn't fuck it up like they did with sam and duffy😭

Honestly…my brain still can’t quite wrap around the idea of why Daitō was cast in a Yakuza game. His repretoire doesn’t really align with what Yakuza is…it’s a lot of…roles where his beauty is more important than his acting LOL (I’m sure his acting is fineee 😅)

And it’s interesting because the only thing that I could possibly see “linking” him onto the series are these movies he did with a few Yakuza actors (all future ones…kind of Kiritani and Endō would be the only “applicable” links cuz of Y4) called Crows Zero (based off a manga, I guess. still haven’t watched these). The timing also aligns:

Crows Zero - 2007, Crows Zero 2 - 2009, Yakuza 4 - 2010/11, Yakuza 5 - 2012

I’m going to be honest…I’ve really only jumped down the Kimura film/discography rabbit hole, so everything further is assumption based off skimming Wikipedia, etc.

It looks like most actors for the series have some history with acting in roles involving the yakuza or other serious/crime-like media. Daitō is a bit of an odd-one out playing this type of serious role when his prowess isn’t really here.

Like…even Kiritani Kenta had done other crime dramas or movies prior to Y4, and he also played a similarish role to Daitō. Not quite…but close enough for me. EVEN Narimiya Hiroki, who was (aww ☹️ i always get sad when i remember his situation) a king of these “pretty-boy” roles had some crime drama experience before taking on Tanimura.

And that’s really what I have on these two, but I love dissecting the characters and actors if you have any others, lol 😊

I’d love to know the actual reason why they chose him for Baba. Because it really does feel like they intentionally chose a “pretty boy” actor to play this type of role. One where the pretty-little-thing seduces/distracts this epitome of masculinity. It’s not a bad thing that they chose to use this dynamic (if this is actually canon…which just keeps feeling more and more likely) and Daitō…but it is a bit curious lol.

It means so much to me that you like the way I write Sukuna in this AU! I squealed when I read Daryl's name! 😭💗 He is my absolute favorite character in TWD. He is so dear to me. I love him a lot. A badass with a good heart who will do what is necessary, even if it might be something bad. He sees the bigger picture and is ready to protect the people who are important to him. I love him so much! And yes, he is absolutely an inspiration for Sukuna 😭💗Sukuna is a sexualized version of Daryl, I guess lmaooo 😂😂 Seriously, I wanted to portray Sukuna as a tough guy who knows how to survive in the apocalypse because he can be ruthless. But at the same time, he is able to love deeply when it comes to the few people he cares about, and he will do anything to protect them.

And also, yes, Shane! I admit that I am a Shane apologist. I can't remember everything he did because it was such a long time ago that I watched the first seasons. But I remember saying that I understood him.

But yeah, Daryl is the biggest inspiration for Sukuna. And I hope I can create a character that is as badass and caring as him 😭

Also, fun fact: Daryl has the same German voice actor as Sukuna!!

Oooooh tbh there will be sad scenes in this AU, I'm not going to lie. It's a dark world, and bad things happen there. So a typical happy end wouldn't work here for me, but let's put it like that: There will still be hope in the end. I want Sukuna and Reader to be each other's glimmer of hope throughout this story. AAAHHH now I am going to cry!!! I already get so emotional thinking about the rest of the story! 😭

Three pairings I ship: Drarry (of course), Sunbrat, from In Other Lands (absolutely amazing book, everyone should read it), and Cecilos

My first ship: Honestly, I don’t remember, but it was probably either something from Percy Jackson, or Drarry. It’s been a while, though, so who knows?

My favourite colour: Purple! All shades, all types, although my absolute favourite is probably lavender.

The last song I listened to: Mantras by Ellen Winter. It’s been getting stuck in my head for weeks now

The last series I read/watched: I don’t know if it counts, but I just finished the sequel to The Last 8, called The First 7. They’re both amazing, they’re about an alien invasion of Earth, and all of the people die, except for a select few teenagers. Any more than that would be spoiling, but they’re very good books.

What I’m currently reading/watching: I‘m reading Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, who wrote the podcast together. It‘s about Josh Crayton and his mom, Diane Crayton, Jackie Fierro, who owns the pawn shop and is eternally nineteen, and King City, although I haven’t read far enough to see exactly how King City is related. It’s very chaotic, but in a nice way.

Last film: I watched Uncharted last week with a friend, it was very good. Kind of unmemorable though

What I’m currently working on: I’m betaing a crossover between Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, with an Aphrodite-kid!Draco, for a friend who I don’t think has Tumblr.
