Chapter 16:

Luffy did a balloon thing last chapter which, again, not possible so he’d die but you go king

Buggy and some used crewmates as meat shields, which, uh, been a hot minute idk what they defended against but I think it’s a toss up and slightly survivable, though if you have to use a human shield that usually means it’s not a fun attack

Guy is beating on Zoro and I’m ngl I think that’s not very good maybe that’s just me😁😁

Chapter 17:

Guy and Zoro fight some more and buggy tries to hold Zoro down except Luffy stops it cause it’s Zoro a fight so that’s a neat show of character

Zoro beats guy up and immediately passes out from probably blood loss, again, normal people don’t quite survive that sort of thing but like have fun w it I guess😭

Chapter 18:

Luffy and Buggy start scrapping!

Buggy gets pissy cause it turns out Luffy got his hat from shanks, who buggy says used to be a cabin boy with him when they were on a different pirates crew together

Buggy beats up the hat and Luffy is the pissed one now😬😬 have fun with that zamn

Chapter 19:

SPOILERS AHEAD for the end of Trimax. I know bookclub still has a few weeks left to get there, but @pepplemint put down some thoughts I really liked (linked below, their post includes the spoilers that I'm reflecting on). I was originally going to just reblog with comments I wanted to add, but then this post wound up way longer than I expected.

Anyways, for op, I think this essay may be of interest to you with its discussion of the final few chapters; especially this bit where the writer quotes the late Thich Nhat Hanh:

Though the Bible values understanding, it prioritizes love above all. Jesus encourages his followers to love thy neighbor, no matter what, whether or not there is understanding. Alternately, in Living Buddha, Living Christ, Thich Nhat Hanh writes that “In Buddhism, understanding (prajña) is essential to love (maitri). Without understanding there cannot be true love, and without love there cannot be true understanding.” Perhaps the finale of Trigun Maximum is a blending of these two philosophies.

For me personally, the use of the Genesis allusions in the resolution of the story and the way that plants and humans switch around in acting as the god figure in relation to one another have stirred up thoughts about how there's more of a push and pull in God's relationship with humanity in the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible (which has the same books as the Protestant Old Testament but they're arranged differently).

My knowledge of Judaism is pretty basic, so I'd love to hear from someone who can provide more perspective, but from what I do know, the Jewish approach to God differs from the Christian approach in that adherents are encouraged to question God (even the very existence of God is up for questioning). In Christianity, God is characterized as an all-powerful perfect being humans have to obey, but this characterization really involves a lot of retconning of the Jewish source material, because in those stories, God is not necessarily omnipotent or omnibenevolent.

In Genesis 3:22-23, God seems to express concern over the possibility of humans rivaling him. From the NRSV translation:

(22) And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”  (23) So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 

But even with the banishment from the Garden of Eden and the whole Tower of Babel episode in which God voices his qualms about humanity becoming too powerful, God also has moments in which he welcomes it when people challenge him. Genesis 32:24-32 is the story of Jacob wrestling with God and insisting "I will not let you go unless you bless me," and he gets his blessing. And it's in these verses that we get an explanation for the meaning of the name Israel - "The one who strives with God" (from the notes of The New Oxford Annotated Bible).

And what is Trigun but a story of striving between creator and creation? There's plenty of contentious striving, full of pain and conflict, but there's also the striving for understanding - a struggle to truly KNOW the other so that together, they may have a chance at building a more mutually beneficial future.

TLDR: I think the relationship of mutual contention between God and mankind as seen in the Hebrew Bible is a better analogy for the humans vs plants conflict than the Christian view of original sin cutting people off from a perfect supreme authority.

In this chapter I want to bring up that Luffy severely supports people wanting to chase and fight for their dreams but I think he also simultaneously doesn’t give a shit about those people/the specifics of their dreams. Obviously he cares a great deal about freedom, and by extension using it to chase your dreams, but I feel him finding some things just a little silly sometimes is also something that can coexist with his respect for people’s dedication to chasing dreams

Chapter 15:

Ik was voor een weekje terug na een half jaar niet in ons huis te zijn geweest vanwege de pups van Biba. Mijn doel was onze Amerikaanse vrienden gedag te zeggen, wat huis gerelateerde zaken op te tuigen en vooral ook bij te slapen, want na 9 pups en eentje die nog niet zindelijk was, had ik daar een chronisch te kort van!

Gek genoeg zag ik er tegenop. Hoe zou ik ons huis aantreffen? Was de liefde die ik er voor voelde nog steeds aanwezig? Na een hele dag wachten op het vliegveld omdat het vliegtuig niet op tijd in Rotterdam arriveerde, kwam ik eindelijk weer aan in ons dorp Cause de Clerans.

En natuurlijk was ik weer thuis. Het moment dat ik m’n deur opentrok en m’n dorpsgenote Leonie gedag zei, zuchten mijn huis en ik gelijktijdig van blijdschap en herkenning. ‘Hoi, je bent er weer, wees welkom!’.

M’n huis had zich goed gehouden gedurende een lange en koude winter en zag er top uit. De werkzaamheden in keuken en op de overloop waren aanzienlijke verbeteringen. Fijn! Ook de tuin zag er goed uit. Er was iets overenthousiast naar m’n smaak gesnoeid maar à la.

Vanaf het moment dat ik er weer was had ik een druk programma. Ik wilde iedereen gedag zeggen en zij mij. Met m’n slechte rug racete ik met m’n autootje met Frans kenteken (!) van de ene afspraak naar de andere. En ik had het niet anders gewild, en negeerde de rugpijn door rijkelijk ibuprofen te slikken.

Wat waren de roddels? Want tja, denk maar niet dat het saai is in zo’n dorp! Eigenlijk waren het er zo veel dat ik ze nog steeds niet op een rijtje heb.

De Amerikanen uit Carmel California gingen hun reis verder oppakken. Na bijna een jaar in ons dorp te hebben vertoeft was het voor hen tijd om te gaan, hoe jammer dan ook. Ik heb ze in m’n hart gesloten, wat de buitenwereld ook over hen te zeggen heeft. Ik hoop niet dat het een geval van ‘uit het oog, uit het hart’, zal zijn.

Ik was lid van de ‘bookclub’ geworden. We hadden gezamenlijk een boek gelezen en zouden dit boek tijdens de lunch bespreken. De lunch was bij Avril, een sympathieke Britse vrouw die net na ons met haar echtgenoot Sean in ons dorp is komen wonen. Ik had van te voren bedacht dat ik in de week in Frankrijk moeite zou doen met m’n uiterlijk. En dus toog ik met m’n beste beentje voor naar het huis van Avril. Nadat ik weken de honden mevrouw was wilde ik nu weer even Fiona zijn!

‘You look absolutely fabulous Fiona!’, kreeg ik bij binnenkomst te horen. ‘Thank you!’ riep ik. Avril en haar buurvrouw Jacky glimlachte me toe. ‘You’ve just reminded me’ zei Jacky, ‘how much of a country bumpkin I’ve become. And you know that that’s a fact when you get very enthousiastic about Intermarché clothes!’. Ik vond het een grappige constatering. ‘True’, ik droeg m’n Hermes sjaal die middag en hij maakte m’n outfit af. Gaf m’n outfit extra ‘cachet’ zoals men dat noemt…

Kleding maken de man (of vrouw). Ik ben er niet altijd blij mee want je wordt naar mijn idee te veel beoordeeld op uiterlijk in onze maatschappij. Ik kan er ook als de ‘bag lady’ uitzien. En dan verkoopt de stofzuiger specialist je nog geen onderdeel omdat hij ervan uitgaat dat je deze niet kan betalen. Ja zeker, ik spreek uit ervaring! Maar doe je wat meer je best met je outfit dan wil iedereen aan tafel naast je zitten! Bij wijze van.

There is just just much potential to unfold here. With exception of event characters like Granny Felmeir and Najma, all female characters are all off screen. So we kind of have to fill in the blanks of who these women and how they act, and that is where the fun comes in.

Especially for a Miss Yuu, because by default the whole situation raises many questions and concerns that all the mama bears come out. Yuu gets more care packages than their sons. "What do you mean why am I sending her things? You have everything you need and she has nothing. Now be sure to ask if she liked the cookies I sent." Yuu went from barely scraping by to being in want of nothing in just a few months.

We all know Asha, we all know Lilith. I just know Deuces mom is so nice and offers to have her over for breaks if she ever needs it. "Does she have any family? No? Invite her for the holidays right now!" Or Sebeks mom, I like to headcanon that Mrs. Zigvolt is more or less twisted from Fauna, so she is the sweetest lady alive. Her children are her everything and she cannot stand the thought of Yuu being all alone. She will not stand for it.

Meanwhile Yuu is having a blast with the sisters. Having everyones mom around means having their sisters pop in, and Najma and Sebeks sisters are pretty much the closest in age to her and are fun to hang out with.
