Months pass. Fullerton Sr. comes to his friend, Judge Filson, in distress because Ellen is blaming his son with with the paternity of her child and asking for recognition. The father is resolved that the family name will not be tarnished. The Judge makes a personal plea for her fair treatment, relating a story of his own youth. Jackie Ormes: A Cartoonist Ahead of Her Time
“I have never liked dreamy little women who can't hold their own." –Jackie Ormes
Jackie Ormes is best known as a trail-blazing African-American cartoonist, but she was also a journalist and a civil rights activist. She created two extremely different comics that were seen in newspapers published expressly for African-American readers. Prior to World War II these readers followed the romances of adventuress Torchy Brown, but after the War, Miss Ormes’s single panel comic Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger provided biting social commentary through an outspoken six-year old named Patty-Jo.
Tumblr media

Jackie Ormes Gets Her Start
Jackie Ormes was “born on August 1, 1911, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania”(1) as Zelda Mavin Jackson. Her father, William Winfield Jackson ran a movie theater and had owned a printing company in Pittsburgh. After he was killed in an automobile accident in 1917, young Zelda and her sister went to live with an aunt and uncle. After her mother remarried, the girls moved with her and her new husband to Monongahela, outside of Pittsburgh.(1)
Throughout high school Jackie, an avid artist and cartoonist, became the arts editor for her high school year book.(1) Her correspondence with the editor of The Pittsburgh Courier, “a weekly African American newspaper that came out every Saturday”(2) led to her first assignment, as a proofreader. Jackie’s talent and hard work soon earned her reporting assignments covering everything from human interest stories to local boxing matches.(1)
In 1936, Jackie met and married businessman Earl Ormes.” Sadly, the couple “lost their only child, Jacqueline, to a brain aneurysm at age 3”(3).
Torchy Brown: “From Dixie to Harlem”
On May 1, 1937 The Pittsburgh Courier became the first newspaper to publish a comic strip written and drawn by a woman of color. (1) On that date Torchy Brown in “From Dixie to Harlem” first appeared in the paper. The strip followed the adventures “of a young country girl who moves from Mississippi to New York City in order to make it as a lounge singer at the famed Cotton Club”(2). While Torchy Brown was written with a humorous tone, the story line “mirrored the journey of many African-Americans who ventured northward during the Great Migration”(1).
The Torchy Brown series “was not syndicated in the usual sense” (1), The Pittsburgh Courier had over a dozen regional editions that were published in cities across the United States. In this way, Jackie’s work had exposure to millions of readers (3).
The Torchy Brown strip only ran for one year. No one knows exactly why the strip didn’t run longer, but there is some speculation that Ormes’s contract with The Courier had ended. Perhaps another reason was that Jackie’s husband, Earl had been offered a job in Chicago (4).
Jackie Ormes: “From Pittsburgh to Chicago”
In Chicago, Earl Ormes became a successful manager in the hotel business, first managing “the DuSable Hotel and later … the more upscale Sutherland Hotel”(4). Once settled in Chicago, Jackie was active in “the music, fashion and artistic communities of Chicago”(4). She had not, however, lost interest in her journalism. Based on her work at The Pittsburgh Courier, she persuaded the editor of one of Chicago’s African-American newspapers, The Chicago Defender to hire her (4).
In 1945, Jackie Ormes returned to cartooning with a one panel strip in The Defender called Candy. The strip “featured a curvaceously-drawn housemaid who wisecracked about her unseen employer and borrowed clothes from her boss’ wardrobe” (4). Unfortunately, Candy was also short-lived, running about four months from March to July (1), and then Ms. Ormes went back to special assignment work for the paper (3).

Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger
Later in 1945 Jackie Ormes, introduced her most successful and longest running comic Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger selling it to her old employer, The Pittsburgh Courier. The strip features the brash and outspoken six-year-old Patty-Jo and her silent sounding board older adult sister Ginger. “Despite her age, Patty-Jo has both a ‘smart mouth’ and keen insights into” (4) the racial situation in the United States during that time.
Tumblr media

The comic’s popularity led Ms. Ormes in 1947 to market a “Patty-Jo” doll.  She “contracted with the Terri Lee doll company … to produce a play doll based on her little girl cartoon character” (1). The doll was popular with both black and white children (1).

The Return of Torchy Brown
In August 1950 The Pittsburgh Courier started publishing “an eight-page color comics insert” (1) which gave Ms. Ormes the opportunity to reprise her Torchy Brown character of 1937 in the strip Torchy in Heartbeats. The new Torchy strip also featured a Torchy paper doll with costumes that demonstrated Ms. Ormes’ talent as a fashion designer. Unlike the Torchy of the 1930s, the resurrected Torchy “was confident, intelligent, and brave” (1) unlike the usual stereotype of African American women at the time. Like Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger, Ms. Ormes used Torchy to spotlight controversial issues “everything from race to sex to environmental pollution” (1). During this time, Ms. Ormes support for civil rights and other leftist political issues subjected her to an investigation by the FBI during the McCarthy Era (1,2).

Jackie Ormes Later Years
The last installment of Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger ran on September 22, 1956, and it has been speculated that “editorial changes within The Pittsburgh Courier (4)” led Ms. Ormes to retire from cartooning. Although her cartooning days were over, she continued to remain artistically active working on still life paintings, portraits, and murals until the mid-1960s when painful arthritis caused her to stop. She did continue to contribute to many Chicago non-profit organizations with volunteer work and fundraising efforts. One of her most prestigious positions was on the board of directors for the DuSable Museum of African American History. Ms. Ormes was also an avid doll collector with over 150 dolls in her collection. (1)
Jackie Ormes’s Legacy
In 1976 Jackie Ormes’s husband Earl died after forty years of marriage. (1) Ms. Ormes died in Chicago on the day after Christmas in 1985.(4) In 2007 Cheryl Lynn Eaton, writer and cartoonist, founded The Ormes Society, which promotes black female comics artists; the following year a biography of Ms. Ormes was written and published by Nancy Goldstein.(2) In 2014 Ms. Ormes was posthumously inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame. On September 1, 2020, a Google Doodle commemorated Ms. Ormes and her work. (1) Filmmaker Susan Reib is currently working on a film based Miss Ormes’ life and her Torchy Brown comics.(5)
Through her artistic talent combined with courage and independence, Jackie Ormes was able to influence both the civil rights and womens’ rights movements in a way that no other artist could. Her work continues to inspire contemporary artists and activists.

Online Reputation Management (ORM ...
There are a great deal of misunderstandings regarding online reputation management. Some people assume it's just social networks surveillance, while others believe it has something to do with public connections, and also still others essentially have no suggestion just how it can impact company and sales. In this overview, I'm mosting likely to describe the role of online reputation management in today's business and media landscape.
Simply a couple of years earlier, the web was very various. Business were not appealing customers but just marketing to a passive target market; people can not reveal their voice in a powerful means, and the total interaction landscape was really "leading down." The situation has significantly altered. Today, web sites are no more fixed brochures.
And regular communications on socials media are vital to any kind of company success. Regardless of the size of your company, they (prospects, clients, clientsanyone as well as, possibly, everyone) are speaking about you. They are tweeting regarding your most recent item, leaving a discuss your blog site, publishing a Facebook update concerning their client experience, as well as a lot more.

earth-82: teams, part i
okay, so people seem interested and i’m dying to talk about this universe so here we go! my version of dc canon. i’m splitting this up into multiple posts because otherwise it’ll turn into a monster.
this first post will focus on my versions of the founders of the justice league and my version of the founders of the teen titans. it’s mostly aligned with canon but with (what i think are) some interesting divergencies.
.
.
.
The Justice League of America
the second existing major superhero team within the dc universe and eventually the most expansive.
Bruce Wayne (Batman) - Bruce witnessed his parents’ death when he was seven years old and after that he was put into the custody of Alfred Pennyworth (his family’s butler) and Leslie Thompkins (a doctor friend of Thomas’s). During his college years, Bruce sought out training so that he could eventually return to Gotham and attempt to eradicate crime. During this time, he joins the League of Assassins for awhile and fell into a brief relationship with Talia Al-Ghul. He became Batman at 23 and adopted Dick Grayson a year later.
Clark Kent | Kal-El (Superman) - Kal-El is the only son of Jor-El and Lara-El (nee Lor-Van), who was born during Krypton’s last days. Jor and Lara sent him to Earth, with the hope that he would be taken in by a human family who would raise him well. When Kal landed he was found by Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent (nee Clark), a childless couple. Martha convinced Jonathan that they should adopt Kal and they eventually chose to name him Clark Joseph Kent and raise him as a normal human, despite his strange origins. He became Superman at 22, a few months after being employed at the Daily Planet.
Diana, daughter of Hippolyta (Wonder Woman) - Diana, Princess of Themyscira, was Queen Hippolyta’s only daughter. Made from clay, Diana is the result of multiple goddesses deciding to give Hippolyta her wish to have a child. Diana grew up semi-isolated on Paradise Island, surrounded by the Amazons but lacking company her own age. She was almost three thousand years old when Steve Trevor landed on Themyscira. After a series of challenges that she won, Diana was chosen as Champion of the Gods and left Themyscira with Steve. She helped end WWI but didn’t return to Themyscira at this point, because she had fallen in love with Steve. She stayed with him until he died, before returning to Paradise Island. She left Themyscira several more times and at one point brought a young orphaned baby girl back with her to Themyscira. Hippolyta chose to adopt the girl and raise her as Diana’s sister. Diana chose the name Donna, in honor of a fallen friemd. Diana became known as the Wonder Woman in certain conspiracy and history circles around the time of the Gulf War.
Arthur Curry | Orin (Aquaman) - King of Atlantis, Arthur is the son of Atlanna, the former Queen of Atlantis, and Tom Curry, a human lighthouse keeper. He was raised in the surface world but was informed of his Atlantean heritage at a young age. His father got sick when Arthur was fifteen and afraid, Arthur fled to Atlantis. Once there, he learned his mother was believed to be dead and that her husband (Orvax) had been made king. Arthur was welcomed to the kingdom, as a member of the royal family. Arthur was there for two months before Orvax was killed by a rampaging sea monster and the Council of Atlantis was split about who should inherit the throne, but ends up choosing his younger half-brother Orm, with Nuidis Vulko as his advisor. At first, Arthur seemed welcome at Orm’s side, but he was soon informed by a mute servant that Orm planned to have him killed. The servant, an Atlantean mutant named Dolphin, helped him escape and took him to the stronghold of the rebellion that was is a member of. He, with the help of the growing rebellion led by Mera, overthrew Orm and Arthur - now known as Orin throughout the kingdom - took his place on the throne.
Kendra Muñoz-Saunders (Hawkgirl) - Kendra is the reincarnation of Chay-Ara, an Egyptian priestess of Isis who - alongside her lover, Prince Khufu, and a priest of Hathor, Hath-Set - found Thanagarian nth metal, which turned them into Thanagarian-human hybrids and made it so they would reincarnate each time they died. This lifetime Kendra is an archeologist, along the vein of Lara Croft. On her twenty-first birthday, she received her first memory of her life as Chay-Ara and has since retrieved many more of both Chay-Ara’s and her other past lives.
Barry Allen (The Flash) - Barry Allen was destined to become the Flash, not that he knows this. When he was eleven years old Eobard Thawne travelled back in time from the twenty-fifth century and murdered his mother before disappearing again. Barry’s father was blamed for his wife’s murder and imprisoned for the crime, despite Barry’s protests. Barry was adopted by Jay and Joan Garrick. His best friend (and crush) growing up was Iris West and he ended up spending half his time at her place, making it so he saw the Wests as a second family. Barry is a certifiable genius and managed to graduate high school at sixteen. Barry went through college and got a degree in biochemistry and could have gone farther and become a renowned scientist but instead chose to become a CSI for the CCPD. Barry became the second Flash (though for about six months he was known only as the Scarlet Speedster) when he was twenty-two, due to a lightning strike which hit him and caused him to crash into a bookshelf of chemicals. Unknown to him, the lightning was actually the Speed Force choosing him.
Dinah Lance (Black Canary II) - Dinah is the eldest daughter of Larry and D.D. Lance, born with a dominant metagene. The metagene activated during a traumatic childhood experience when she almost fell from a great height but managed to stop herself from hitting the ground with a powerful scream. Dinah grew up in Gotham City with her Uncle John Zatara and his daughter - her best friend - Zee Zatara and her Uncle Ted Grant. When Dinah turned eighteen years old, she left Gotham and moved to Seattle, where she started college, joined a (pretty good) punk band, and became known as the “Lady in Black” - a vigilante that stopped muggers and rapists with a single scream and a few well-placed kicks. Little did Dinah know that she’s following in the footsteps of her mother, the first Black Canary.
Zatanna Zatara (Zatanna) - Zatanna is the daughter of Giovanni “John” Zatara, a golden-aged superhero called the Magician who had been a member of the JSA and was capable of some magic (a descendant of the Homo Magi), and Sindella, one of the last pure Homo Magi. Zee was born with magical potential the like of which few could compare. Due to John being close friends with D.D. Lance and Thomas Wayne, Zee grew up as a friend of Dinah Lance and Bruce Wayne. John decided to move to Europe when Zee was ten years old and while Zee lost contact with Bruce, she stayed close to Dinah. During her time in Europe, John sought out magicians to help train Zee. When she was eighteen, Zee decided to leave Europe (and her on-again-off-again boyfriend John Constantine) and move to Las Vegas to try and get a start as a stage magician, following in the footsteps of her father.
Original Teen Titans
the beginnings of the first teen superhero team.
Dick Grayson (Robin/Nightwing) - Dick is the son of circus acrobats, John and Mary Grayson, who were killed when he was eight years old. He was taken in by Bruce Wayne and became Robin the next year. Robin is the most experienced sidekick, having already been apart of the vigilante world for four years before the team formed. He became Nightwing when he was seventeen years old and was at that point de facto the leader of the team, alongside Wonder Girl and Starfire.
Donna Troy (Wonder Girl) - Donna is an orphan that Diana rescued from a burning building and took to Themyscira. Donna was adopted by Queen Hippolyta and blessed by the gods to become immortal herself and to gain all the other attributes of the Amazons. When Donna turned twelve, she convinced Diana to take her to Man’s World. She attended a Justice League meeting, which is where she met and became fast friends with Dick Grayson. She and Dick remained friends even as she returned to Themyscira, communicating through letters they exchanged through their mentors. When Donna was fourteen, and Dick thirteen, they convinced Diana and Bruce to let them have a sanctuary of their own, which Bruce produced in New York City and would eventually become Titans Tower. Donna and Dick are the founding and core members of the Teen Titans.
Karyn Zor-El / Karen Starr (Power Girl/Flamebird) - Karyn is the eldest daughter of Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, four years older than her sister Kara. When Krypton was about to be destroyed, Karyn’s parents put her and Kara into a rocket ship where they would be in suspended animation until they arrived on earth; they were supposed to find Kal and seek shelter on Earth as soon as they landed. They were unlucky though and got caught in the Phantom Zone, where they remained for twenty-five years before breaking free and finally landing on Earth, where they woke up to meet Superman for the first time. Karyn was furious to see someone wearing her family’s symbol and attempted to attack Superman, screaming at him in kryptonian. Clark, who knew very little kryptonian, struggled to explain what happened and, once he finally did, Karyn was horrified to learn that Kal had grown up without her and Kara. She refused to fully assimilate to human culture and asked that Kal find her and Kara someone to live with that they would not have to hide their identities from (as Karyn is only thirteen at the time); Clark decided his childhood best friend Lana Lang was the best choice and after she agreed, he approached Bruce for help in establishing fake identities for them as Karen and Kara Starr, Lana’s long lost nieces. Karyn was introduced to Dick Grayson (Robin) and Donna Troy (Wonder Girl) a few months after settling in. She helped form the original Teen Titans.
Wally West (Kid Flash) - Wally is the youngest child of Joe and Frankie West. He considers Barry Allen his older brother, since Barry always spent so much time at the West’s place. He found out Barry was the Flash when he was twelve (about three months after the new Flash first appeared) and demanded that Barry tell him everything! He foolishly decided to try and recreate the accident and was lucky to be chosen by the Speed Force as well. He was allowed to become Kid Flash when he was thirteen, with Joe and Frankie’s permission. He joined the Teen Titans a few weeks after his superhero debut.
Garth of Shayeris (Aqualad) - Garth is the only son of King Thar and Queen Berra of Shayeris and would have been the crown prince had his parents not been overthrown before he was born. His father was killed and his mother banished to Poseidonis, due to the actions of his uncle - a magician with malicious goals. He was born with violet eyes, which marked him with the potential to become a powerful magic-user in his own right. Unfortunately, magic-users had recently been made taboo within Poseidonis and Garth was cast out. He was found by Princess Mera of Xebel, Xebel being an pocket dimension found within the Bermuda Triangle. Mera convinced her parents to take him in. Xebel had no taboo against magic users which allowed Garth to grow up with no bigotry against him for his potential magical abilities, and Mera (a powerful sorceress in her own right) ended up being the own to train him when he expressed interest in the magical arts. Garth met Arthur Curry when he was ten and Arthur twenty, through the rebellion Xebel had joined to bring down King Orvax and later King Orm, and they quickly bonded. When Arthur later became Aquaman, he offered Garth the position of Aqualad. Garth was the second to last of the founders of the Teen Titans to join.
Roy Harper (Speedy/Red Arrow) - Roy Harper Jr never met his father, and his mother, a Navajo woman, died giving birth to him. Roy was raised by his uncle, Broken Bow, until shortly before his uncle’s death when he was twelve. Broken Bow had convinced Oliver Queen, newly recovered billionaire who had been missing for five years, to take Roy in. Because of Oliver’s relationship with Dinah Lance, a personal friend of both Batman and Wonder Woman, Roy was introduced to the other teen heroes when he was fifteen, as Speedy. He ends up becoming fast friends with them and was the last member of the team to join.
.
.
.
okay, guys that’s all for part one! part two will have at least three more teams (the new teen titans, young justice, and the justice league dark).

Nansook Hong was interviewed by Rachael Kohn in 1999
Tumblr media
A section of this interview was broadcast on Rachael’s ABC Australia radio show ‘The Spirit of Things’ on February 5, 2006.
Download the audio here: http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/spiritofthings/free-yourself-from-mind-control/3305644
Rachael Kohn: Here’s a clip from someone who knew the Moonies intimately. [In 1999], I interviewed Sun Myung Moon’s daughter-in-law, Nansook Hong, who became a child bride to Moon’s son. After 14 years as a member of the True Family, and virtually imprisoned in the headquarters of the Unification Church, north of New York City, Nansook Hong made a harrowing escape with her children. Nansook Hong: The first day I came into the compound from that moment from the time that I left, every aspect was controlled, where I lived, and where I went to school, the people that I associated with, but it was more a superficial relationship. I couldn’t tell anybody who I was. The one thing I learned very early, I learned that I couldn’t trust anybody in the compound. I always had to watch out every word that I uttered. I had to think what this was going to do to me later on. It was very much the medieval court, I guess lifestyle, everybody’s there for their political agenda, they’re all there stabbing each other’s back to get what they wanted. Rachael Kohn: So you were in a kind of constant state of fear, as to whether you were saying the right thing or paying obeisance in the right way? Indeed, how did you pay obeisance to the Divine Mother and Father? Nansook Hong: First of all I was basically their maid. I was there before they got up, I served their breakfast, I was there from the morning till they went to sleep. And the Reverend Moon has his meetings at his breakfast table, after that they watch some Korean soap opera, and I’m there serving them. Rachael Kohn: So you had to sit and watch the soap opera with Mrs Moon? Nansook Hong: Oh, and the Reverend Moon as well, yes. And when they went for trips, well I had to go. Whenever they felt like calling me, then I had to be there. Rachael Kohn: Well Nansook, you had children, indeed five children, and they provided a great deal of emotional support for you. Nansook Hong: Well I was first of all supposed to produce Reverend Moon’s grandchildren, and that was one of my missions, which I did. I had a certain belief of how I wanted to raise my children, that didn’t always follow Reverend and Mrs Moon’s ideas of how children should be raised. And there was conflict, but I couldn’t really go against what they were saying. And I had my way of asserting some of my ideas, but that was very difficult. Whenever they wanted to take the children to a different country, then they could, we couldn’t really say anything. The grandchildren were more like ornaments to them. When they went to Alaska, when they went to Korea or different countries, they took their little grandchildren to show the members that it kind of provided a good picture of being loving grandparents. Rachael Kohn: There was also a curious attitude that he showed towards your parents, who had done a great deal for him, financially. You describe his need to humiliate the people who did good things for them. Nansook Hong: That was the way for Reverend Moon to put people in place, especially people who are capable. A lot of people are there just taking money, and they’re very incompetent, and my father, he brought a lot of money and he gained a lot of respect, and I think Moon felt some threat, and he always had to put people in place by humiliating people in public, that was his tactic. He yelled, he called names, about my Dad, in front of everybody, and that’s what he did to me too, especially after my parents left, he, in front of my kids, Moon just yelled at me, called me names and it was basically a torture being there every Sunday, having to listen to what he had to say. Rachael Kohn: Nansook, how did you manage to overcome your fear, the fear of being punished, the watchful eyes everywhere, to finally make your break from the group? Nansook Hong: Whenever you talk about fear, you are too attached to fear, physical and also psychological. Psychologically I think the fear was there since I was born. I was told it was God’s rule and we absolutely had to obey it, and being a religious person, a person who has faith in God, you cannot conceive the idea that you will go against God. So I was in a psychological trap, and that was a very frightening thought. And also the physical fear, I constantly had to watch what my ex might do to me, there was always concern, especially a year before I left, I knew that one day I was going to end up being dead. When I finally realized that I had to leave for my safety – and also the big part was my children’s safety as well – I did plan very carefully, going to lawyers, at the same time going through a lot of soul-searching, whether I was going against God. And I had help, I had support, my family helped, my best friend helped, so I was one of the lucky ones. Rachael Kohn: But the Moons did not give up so easily. Nansook Hong: Well financially I really didn’t know how I was going to survive. I knew that Moon and the family and the church, they were going to fight to get the children back, and the major way of doing that is pressuring me financially. It was a long, legal battle, they used every tactic you can possibly think of. My ex declared bankruptcy to not to pay the money, and grandparents [Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han] were telling lawyers not to pay a penny. Rachael Kohn: Nansook, it’s one thing to break away from a life that has been something of an elongated torture, but then to write about it takes another kind of courage. Why did you feel you wanted to write this book? Nansook Hong: When I realized that, I decided that I had to write a book about my life, as a perspective from inside, it was very centered on family, and not that many people have access to that. The idealism, the theory the church has that of loving family, loving parents, and children and brothers and sisters, and establishing the society and eventually the world for God, it makes very good sense, and they have a lot of truths in it. But Moon and his family, they do not practice what they preach, and not that many people have access to the reality. I felt some sense of obligation and it wasn’t just for the Unification Church members, there are a lot of cults, very destructive cults, out there, robbing people’s... I think, innocent idealism. It’s basically a cautionary tale for members, for future members, and also for the relatives or friends whose loved ones are in that kind of situation.
Rachael Kohn: Nansook Hong’s story of her life in the Moon compound is called In the Shadow of the Moons – My life in the Reverend Sun Myung Moon’s family.
Nansook Hong fled from her husband and the Moon compound in August 1995.
On September 17, 1997, in a segment on CBS-TV’s “60 Minutes,” Mike Wallace spoke to Nansook Hong about her 14 year marriage to Hyo-jin Moon, the eldest son of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. One of Moon’s estranged daughters, Un-jin Moon, broke her long public silence about the dysfunctional “True Family.” Un-jin backed up Nansook Hong’s account and called her “very honest.” Donna Orme Collins also contributed.
On September 21, 1997 Sun Myung Moon spoke at East Garden, but many members felt he failed to address their concerns from “60 Minutes.” The issue of another illegitimate son, Sam Park born in 1966, was a major one.
Despite the PR put out by the FFWPU, it is a fact that Hyo-jin Moon was jailed for failing to pay court ordered costs to Nansook, and he failed drug tests. It is also a fact that Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han were guilty of marrying Nansook to their son, Hyo-jin, when she was under the legal age for marriage in New York state.
In December 1997, Nansook Hong was granted a divorce from Hyo-jin Moon, and custody of their five children.

Activists Worldwide Face Off Against Face Recognition: 2019 Year in Review
We’ve all heard the expression, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” We might hope that what we do and where we go will only be known to those who were there in person. Yet maintaining such anonymity and privacy in public spaces is becoming ever more difficult. 2019 has marked the year where a growing digital rights network around the world is pushing back against governments and companies’ use of face recognition technologies in public spaces. This year, in an attempt to prevent people from having their movement and actions meticulously tracked, these activists took action against face recognition in countries all over the world.
Ban on Mass Use of Face Recognition
Digital rights activists have long argued that face recognition constitutes mass surveillance when used to track the movements of entire populations in public spaces by matching faces obtained from CCTV cameras, drones or other devices against existing databases. In October, more than 90 NGOs and hundreds of experts gathered in Albania at the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners and called for a global moratorium on mass surveillance by face recognition. The Public Voice coalition urged countries to review all face recognition systems “to determine whether personal data was obtained lawfully and to destroy data that was obtained unlawfully.” In addition, the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union (FRA) has also published a paper recognizing that “given the novelty of the technology as well as the lack of experience and detailed studies on the impact of facial recognition technologies, multiple aspects are key to consider before deploying such a system in real-life applications”. It further said that “[f]orms of facial recognition that involve a very high degree of intrusion into fundamental rights, compromising the inviolable essential core of one or more fundamental rights, are unlawful.” And the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, David Kaye, called for an immediate moratorium on the sale, transfer, and use of surveillance technology, including face recognition, until legal frameworks are established that meet human rights standards.
In Russia, Roskomsvoboda launched a campaign calling for a moratorium on government mass use of face recognition until the technology’s effects are studied and the government adopts legal safeguards that protect sensitive data.  In the United Kingdom, 25 NGOs including Big Brother Watch, Article 19, Open Rights Group, and Privacy International called on U.K. police and private companies to immediately stop using live face recognition for public surveillance. In 2016 and 2018,  face recognition trials in London erroneously identified individuals as potential criminals in 96 percent of scans, a pervasively high rate of false-positive matches. Also this year, Big Brother Watch launched a legal challenge against the London Metropolitan Police and the Home Secretary to demand an immediate end to the police’s use of live face recognition. In France, La Quadrature du Net (LQDN) called for a  ban on the mass use of face recognition to identify protesters. In the last six years, the French government has adopted several decrees—without any public debate—that allow for automatic identification of protesters.  And in the United States, local activists took up the fight against face recognition by successfully passing face recognition bans at the city level. Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Somerville, Massachusetts all passed bans on government use of face recognition technology. Earlier this year, California prohibited the use of face recognition on law enforcement body-worn cameras, causing San Diego to end its long-running mobile face recognition program.
La Quadrature du Net and other French NGOs also filed an action to ban the use of face recognition in two high schools in Nice and Marseille. Those actions led CNIL, France’s data protection authority, to conclude that the use of face recognition at the entrance of the schools to target mostly minors is not “necessary or proportionate,” and that the goals of the program could "be achieved by much less intrusive means in terms of privacy and individual freedoms." In a similar case in Sweden, the Swedish Data Protection Authority (DPA) imposed a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) fine of approximately 20,000 euros on a municipality after a school conducted a pilot using face recognition technology to track students’ attendance. The Swedish DPA rejected the municipality's argument that the school had consent to process sensitive biometric information, as required under the GDPR, indicating that “consent was not a valid legal basis given the clear imbalance between the data subject and the controller.” Unfortunately, only a few months later, the same Swedish DPA issued another decision allowing police departments to use face recognition to compare face images from CCTV footage to criminal biometric databases. The decision clarified that police must set a retention period for biometric information collected from cameras.
Ending the Culture of Secrecy
This year, Latin American NGOs have been fighting back against a deeply rooted culture of secrecy surrounding face recognition providers’ identity, data sources, data collection methods, applications, and customers. TEDIC, the main digital rights organization in Paraguay, filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a Ministry of the Interior resolution that denied TEDIC’s public records request for further details about the Ministry of Interior and the National Police’s use of face recognition technology. Face recognition has been used in Asunción’s downtown area, airport, and bus stations since 2018, and is now planned to be expanded throughout Asunción.
In Argentina, Asociación por los Derechos Civiles (ADC)  filed a lawsuit against the Government of the City of Buenos Aires challenging the constitutionality of Resolution 398/19, which introduced a face recognition system linked to the city’s security camera infrastructure and monitoring centers. ADC filed the lawsuit after receiving responses to two information requests about the face recognition system.
Access Now, in collaboration with ADC and the Observatorio de Derecho Informático Argentino, sent an information request to the Argentine province of Córdoba related to the October 2019 announcement of a test of a biometric recognition system linked to video cameras that use artificial intelligence. In Peru later that month, Access Now and Hiperderecho sent similar information requests to La Victoria, San Martín de Porres, and Miraflores, municipal districts of Lima. Among the information requested are the technology provider’s identity, the system’s technical specifications, and the procedures for identification and apprehension of suspicious persons.
Latin American NGOs also launched advocacy campaigns against face recognition. Derechos Digitales launched an advocacy campaign to shine a light on the different face and biometric recognition proposals being considered in Latin America. And in Brazil, inspired by the images Gu Da Cei received through an information request, the artist carried out human intervention campaigns at bus stations in Brasilia to expose photos taken by a bus face biometrics system and reinforce the right of public transport users to their own image.
Role of Private Companies In The Use of Face Recognition for Surveillance
This year, reports have also come to light about the role of private companies in the public use of face recognition. A New York Times report revealed how Chinese companies such as C.E.I.E.C. were successfully commercializing versions of China’s mass face recognition system by exporting them to developing countries, in particular, Ecuador, Bolivia, Angola, and Venezuela. The implementation of the system in Ecuador, ECU911, has simultaneously been popular among Ecuadorians worried about street crime and amplified fears about abuse of the system for political repression. Just before the end of the year, 78 facial recognition CCTVs linked to ECU911 were installed in the Historic Center of Quito, the site where hundreds of indigenous activists recently protested the Ecuadorian government. Derechos Digitales published a report finding that C.E.I.E.C. was also active in Bolivia’s security program and that the funding for the program came from a Chinese national bank. Internet Bolivia told Derechos Digitales that Bol-110, the ambitious project to acquire surveillance technologies in Bolivia, “will be in everything: in schools, taxis, hospitals.” And although Bol-110 was not approved by the Bolivian Congress, the face recognition system has already been purchased.
In Serbia, SHARE Foundation submitted a request for information about a new video surveillance system with face recognition and license plate reader technology. Huawei, a Chinese company,  was revealed to be the Serbian government’s main partner in the endeavor. Additionally, SHARE Foundation unearthed a case study published on Huawei’s website about new generation surveillance cameras that have already been installed in Belgrade. Huawei removed the case study from its website soon after SHARE Foundation’s revelation was made public. In November, SHARE called for the immediate suspension of Serbia’s face recognition program. In a recent report, SHARE, along with NGOs Partners Serbia and Belgrade Center for Security Policy, concluded that the Ministry of Interior’s privacy impact assessment of the surveillance cameras does not meet the standards required by the Serbian data protection law. Brazilian legislators, meanwhile, received an all-expenses-paid trip to China to learn about and view demonstrations of face surveillance technology that Chinese firms hoped Brazil would also choose to acquire.
Security and Data Leakage
The Brazilian Institute of Consumer Defense (IDEC) sent a demand to Dataprev, a Brazilian public company responsible for the security of Brazilian social security information, requesting that it halt its bid for the acquisition of face recognition and fingerprint technology until cases of beneficiaries’ existing data leaks are resolved. IDEC explained that while the company aimed to integrate face recognition into an app to help people with disabilities access their banking and social security information remotely, the technology’s high risk of breach would compromise the personal information of approximately 35 million Brazilians.
In the Netherlands, Bits of Freedom launched an activism campaign to demonstrate the insecurity of a Dutch Face Recognition pilot program in Amsterdam’s central square, Dam, where a webcam is live-streaming to YouTube and the website webcam.nl. Bits of Freedom downloaded images of its members at the Dam, and then ran the images through Amazon’s face recognition software, Rekognition. The software was able to identify the members. Bits of Freedom concluded that face recognition software, combined with mass surveillance in public spaces, threatens the privacy and security of vulnerable people, including victims of stalking and domestic violence.
Conclusion
This year, governments around the world have moved quickly to adopt face recognition technologies for use in public spaces. But activists have been quick to respond, demanding transparency and winning moratoria and bans on the use of this powerful technology. As we look forward to 2020, the tensions between the government’s use of this technology for public safety and individuals’ right to privacy will continue to heighten. EFF will remain vigilant and continue the global fight against the government adoption of face recognition technology.

Amber Jaunai as Jesus H. Christ and Nate DeCook and Vince Ryne as two dumb, obvlivious Southern teens in “Sincerity, Forever.”
To appreciate these first two productions of the five-play Mac Wellman festival at The Flea, entitled “Perfect Catastrophes,” it helps to know that Wellman — the 74-year-old co-founder of The Flea, distinguished professor of playwriting at Brooklyn College; and author of more than 40 plays over the past 50 years – is a pioneer of what could be termed the WTF? school of theater-making. As Wellman told one of his former students interviewing him in American Theatre Magazine in 2016, he believes that “plays are not about plots. They are about moments”..and that the best plays give the audience “a slap in the face.”  He is part of a generation of like-minded, now-revered theater artists who are labeled experimental and avant-garde — and challenging — such as  Richard Foreman, Robert Wilson,  and Lee Breuer and Ruth Maleczech of Mabou Mines, in all of whose work Wellman has said he’s found inspiration.
At the same time, at his best — and in 2016, I saw a new play of his that I consider one of his best, “The Offending Gesture” — his theater pieces are smart, playful, and clever,  displaying a delightful ear for dialogue. If they are exercises in absurdity, they are rooted in the absurdities of the world in which we live.
“Perfect Catastrophes,” which runs through November 1st, will offer two world premieres. But these first two Wellman plays, “Bad Penny” and “Sincerity Forever” go back three decades. The plays are being presented separately, with separate admission, but I saw them one after the other on the same night.

Bad Penny
“Bad Penny” was first presented in 1989 as a site-specific work in Central Park. Anne Hamburger’s En Garde Arts, the mother of all site-specific theater in New York, set it in and around Bow Bridge on the Lake in Central Park, with an 18-member cast of downtown stalwarts, including future luminary Reg. E Cathy.
In place of Central Park, The Flea has furnished their small outdoor theater (really just a narrow backyard) with a kind of Astroturf, and strings of Christmas lights overhead; the audience sits on blankets or around the periphery in a variety of mismatched lounge chairs. And instead of the members of En Garde Arts, The Flea’s production is populated by nine members of the Bats, its resident theater company, a group of mostly young newcomers that in “Bad Penny” generally show more promise than polish.
After several minutes in which the actors and the audience are one undifferentiated lounging mass,  a woman pops up and starts speaking about the sky. She is Kat, (Emma Orme), and, though her monologue might feel unmoored if not unhinged, like the ranting of a mentally ill homeless person, there is something stimulating in her observations and speculations. The “true sky” may be a wonderful place “where all the lost things in the world assemble” – hats, socks, thumbtacks.
The man to whom she seems to be speaking offers a succinct rejoinder: “Go away or I’ll call the police.”
The man, Ray (Joseph Huffman), is carrying a spare tire. His car broke down on the East Side, he explains, and he couldn’t find a gas station there, so he’s going across the park to find one on the West Side. He has come from Big Ugly, Montana. He identifies himself as a “freelance memory fabulist and metaphysician and card player”
A second man (Alex J. Moreno) speaks up, doubting the first man’s story; a third man (Lambert Tamin) agrees it’s dubious; a second woman (Bailie de Lacy) attacks the third man, and defends the first man.
The kibitzing, if surreal, is quintessential New York.
“I knew I shouldn’t have picked up the goddam bad penny I found on the path, over there, near the big fountain. I knew it would turn out this way: bad,” the first woman says, which I suppose explains the title.
The arguing continues – over who’s normal, among other things – as these groups of strangers talk to each other, telling their life stories, and at each other, and about each other, joined by a chorus of three women who chant things like “Let the world be covered with rat fur” and “The Dead Boatman of Bow Bridge is coming…”  And, amidst increasing cacophony, long overlapping rants and choral chants, the Dead Boat of Bow Bridge does eventually arrive, rather anticlimactically.
“Bad Penny” is a day in the park in New York, but it’s not a walk in the park, because, as any New Yorker will tell you, New York is not an easy experience. And that, I think, is what the play is about – a heightened dramatic distillation and affectionate parody of what it’s like to live in New York, and what it’s like to be a New Yorker.
Because it is so much about the city, “Bad Penny” would surely have worked better in a set, or setting, more recognizably New York.

  Sincerity Forever
“Sincerity Forever” was first produced in 1991, and dedicated to Senator Jesse Helms: “…for the fine job you are doing of destroying civil liberties in These States.” It’s surely no coincidence that the play takes place in a fictional Southern town named Hillsbottom (perhaps in Helms’ home state of North Carolina?) full of ignorant bigots.  Thanks to recent events, the play feels newly relevant,  and Wellman’s mockery is balanced with an undergirding anger. The playwright’s leaps and lunges in language can also be entertaining. But “Sincerity Forever” seems simultaneously too obvious and too abstruse to be judged a classic satire. And the acting in this production only intermittently rises to the level that the material demands.
In a series of two-character scenes on a summer night in the outskirts of  Hillsbottom, teenagers talk to one another earnestly about how ignorant they are, but they do so in a contemplative, nearly poetic way:
“I don’t know the difference between good art and bad art. I haven’t a clue what a “hostile takeover” is, nor why junk bonds are junky,” Molly says to Judy. ” I mean why would anybody want them if they’re worthless?”
“I don’t know why the sky is blue, and I don’t know what “blue” is, and I don’t know why I don’t know,” Judy says to Molly.
But Judy and Molly (and the other teenagers in subsequent scenes) conclude that their ignorance must nonetheless somehow be God’s plan. All believe, as Molly  puts it,  “the most important thing is not what you know, but whether you’re sincere or not.” All of the teenagers are dressed in the white hoods and robes of the Ku Klux Klan.
In two subsequent scenes, first George and Judy confess they have crushes on one another, and then Tom and Lloyd, two male teenagers, have nearly the exact same conversation. Then two furballs rant about how stupid AND insincere the people of Hillsbottom are.  These are supposedly the “mystic furballs” that the characters earlier discussed, expressing fear of their destructive power.
These two-character scenes repeat , and mutate – turning cruder, crazier and more confrontational.
Early on, a black woman (Amber Jaunai) comes a-visiting, but the Hillsbottom teenagers ignore her. She turns out to be Jesus H. Christ, and, just in case you missed the point just below the surface of playwright’s sardonic tone,  at the end of “Sincerity Forever,” Jesus delivers with fire and brimstone a long corrosive sermon. I can’t help quoting a (relatively small) chunk of it:
“I came here to raise badass, obstreperous, antisocial, pestiferous, brutalitarian, loudmouthed and chaotic bloody hell. The roaring kind! You swinish, mealy-mouthed bunch of hypocrites wouldn’t know the Lord God of Hosts if he swope down and bit you on the ass. All you care about is what you look like, what you look like in a mirror, a mirror some monster furball dreamt up for you to look at to make you blind. America, you got your eyes open so wide you can’t see a fucking thing. America, you’re crazy if you think your limpdick, milksop, harebrained Christianity has anything whatsoever to do with Jesus H Christ, because that’s who’s standing here before you in the dusty ruination of the open road, because the whole point of what I am about is to shake up belief, to shake up belief and make people stop being so gosh-darned pleased with theyselves, and take a good look at what a sorry place this world is, what with all the jive-ass bullslinging and endless justifying….”
“Who was that African-American babe?” Tom asks. Jesus is still ignored.

The Difference Between Content and Digital Marketing
Tumblr media
A lot of people think that content marketing is the same as digital marketing. Could you be one of them? It is obviously true that importance of content marketing in digital marketing is not measurable. This is why a bigger number of people think that these two types of marketing are the same. Yes, they are related but like one of our professor’s says, “content marketing and digital marketing are affiliated but yet they are distinct.”  So what is the difference between content and digital marketing? This article will expound more and try to answer this question in details. So, let’s learn! There is no way digital marketing can be dragged and be defined as also being content marketing and yet content marketing is not, only digital. Well, let’s make that sound simpler. Digital marketing incorporates the platforms that a company or business makes use of, in order to market itself online. Some of the channels companies and businesses use include; Social media PPC (Ad Words /Bing) Referrals PR (even though it is not digital) Social media platforms that you have to pay for such as Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram. SEO Amongst many others. Content marketing, on the other hand, makes everything we mentioned earlier on efficacious. Content marketing involves two major parts. They include; The Content This part, involves, scheming about the right content which should be produced and the proper format in which the content should be produced in; and Marketing It involves, getting the load of the content, using the distribution of the channels which we listed above, for marketing businesses online. One may view content, as one of the channels for marketing businesses and companies online, but it is better not to view it in that direction. However, there are businesses which have a marketing team that is determined to have a content manager or marketer who is devoted to joining the club. The reason why we stated that viewing content marketing as its own platform is not proper, is because of the two parts it involves. Basically, they both represent two sides; A promotion side; and A production side. To have its message known to the world, content marketing must join effort with the owners of distribution platforms. Therefore, it has to be part of another team, for it to function as it should. Therefore it is safe to say that content marketing considers content as a team activity. Content can also make an appearance in digital marketing. However, it is necessary to remember that content marketing can operate offline, in the outside world. It is possible to assume that advertising is not content marketing. Nevertheless, advertising can actually be content marketing since it catches the eye of the public. Content marketing is sort of a subdivision of digital marketing, while digital marketing is a superset for content marketing since it is part of a bigger group of marketing. This is because; digital marketing involves other marketing strategies such as paid ads, email marketing and also SEO. Digital marketing covers different aspects such as ORM, SSM, and PPC amongst many others. Content marketing is also under SEO and it can be used anytime and anywhere. It does not matter if the business is offline or online. This is what makes content a better method of marketing. Content marketing is not digital marketing and neither is digital marketing, content marketing. Content marketing incorporates all marketing that is confined to the kind of audience, which you have. The best form of content marketing is actually marketing, that is not only limited to selling a product but also, to teach a client and ensure that it pleases them. Digital marketing is a new platform while content marketing is an older channel. Content marketing uses more of narrations, which sometimes are old but digital marketing even tries to challenge some of the big channels on the media such as TV, print, and radio. However, in regards to business activities, content market is likely to expand and most of the budgets for marketing are likely to get on board and support content marketing. This might happen since some of the organizations perceive the digital marketing as a channel for distributing and more of engaging platforms. Digital marketing, on the other hand, operates on any kind of digital platform such as social media, emails and online. This kind of marketing is common today so, it is necessary for you to learn and have full information about the modulations of platforms such as Facebook, Google, Instagram and Twitter among many others. This will help you to attain good results from the digital marketing. Apart from the much technicality, we can just look at the difference between content and digital marketing in a more practical way. Imagine marketing a car such as "Baleno" and a brand such as "Maruti"? The same case applies to content and digital marketing. Content marketig, can be used to market a product or service. Conversely, digital marketing can be used to market a brand or company. You should be careful about the content that you post in both the content marketing and digital marketing. The content should be relevant and straight to the point. It should be easy to understand. However, content is a very important aspect of digital marketing. Even though a digital ad is as simple as it can be, it will require content marketing assimilated into it. Therefore, content is part and parcel of digital marketing since the content is what is used to engender leads. Lastly, someone may even ask if the p-placards on New York City subway are advertising or content. They could be both. Another one may ask if the two are either offline or maybe digital marketing. Again, they could be both. This is because; it entirely depends on the way in which you are weighing the effect. As long as a strategy is effective, should it be of anyone’s concern if, it is offline or online? Therefore, marketers should not really dwell on whether it is digital marketing, offline, content or PR. At times they just want to boost their egos which should not be a priority. Rather, what they should worry more about is the effectiveness of the marketing strategies they use and the success of their businesses and companies. Read the full article

What they provide is the most efficient and convenient way for hardworking people to get their homes and apartments professionally cleaned or serviced. It’s not just cleaning, too: Handy can help customers get in touch with plumbing, electric, and general upkeep services for just about any issue that comes up in their house or apartment.
We’ve outlined everything you need to know about this innovative company, and how they can help you with your cleaning and repair needs!
Their Story
Handy’s story began quite similarly to that of BrandYourself, starting off as a motivated group of friends who sought to improve a sorely lacking aspect of the marketplace. In particular, offering an affordable means for regular people to receive high-quality services. This means that our shared dedication will shine through for Handy’s messaging and content in a way that the marketplace will be forced to take notice of.
The seed was planted in founder Oisin Hanrahan’s mind when he was a 19-year old college student in Ireland and decided to enter the real estate industry. As he began developing real estate in Eastern Europe, Oisin began renovating apartments in Budapest, and he realized he had one consistent problem. Oisin was unable to easily find trustworthy and experienced cleaners and repairmen to help him with basic tasks in the apartments. When Oisin later attended Harvard University with cofounder Umang Dia, the two realized Boston had the same problem as Budapest. This led them to believe that many US cities would benefit from a company that provided reliable, trustworthy, and experienced cleaning and repair professionals.
Oisin Hanrahan and Umang Dia founded the company while studying at Harvard in June 2012. Becoming more and more frustrated with finding help for basic repairs and cleanings in their apartment, the pair decided to create Handy. They envisioned a company that made hiring a cleaner or repairman as simple as ordering a book or other product online.
By the end of 2012, Handy had raised two million dollars in seed financing from the American venture capital firm General Catalyst Partners and global venture capital firm Highland Capital Partners. Then, in 2013, Handy raised another round of funding of ten million dollars from its existing investors and the New York based angel investor David Tisch. At the same time, Handy began to focus on building the company’s presence on the west coast.
In 2014, Handy raised an impressive series B round of funding of thirty million dollars. Soon after in 2015, the company raised another fifteen million.
Another huge success was celebrated in 2015 when the company completed its one MILLIONTH booking through its platform! A huge feat for two Harvard students who simply wanted to make a frustrating process easier for themselves and others.
Handy 101
