As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#“an object created and controlled by companies” anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a “tool”#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is “automation” you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always “well i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on you”#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

smartdraw.com - A cool website I found!
I wanted to do a blueprint of a scene and searched for a free online tool. This website has more than just house plans and mind maps, and I think it could really come in handy if you want to make some settings more approachable.
You can choose to start from scratch or use one of the many templates. The latter is probably easier in the beginning, to try out the different ways to arrange and color the objects. After getting used to the interface (it is similar to PowerPoint) you can use the result as a way to plan your scenes or give your readers a visual aid to follow the plot.
The symbols (or rather objects) for the floor plans, timelines, family trees, crime scenes etc. are sorted in many subcategories, e.g. Floor Plans -> Furniture -> Kitchen. No matter which type of diagram you pick, you can also use the objects from the others, so if you want an endoplasmic reticulum in your bathroom blueprint, go for it.
I think that for whump purposes you should especially check out the Crime Scene category for blood, drugs, weapons and so on.
I do have to say that I experienced some bugs and long loading time, but that could just be my ancient computer going wild. Also, the graphics are certainly not the prettiest. As someone who would have had to draw everything themself instead, it's still a great option.
TLDR: It's like Picrew but for locations.

An artist without their favored tools can still create.
An embroiderer can still manage something passable when given a bone needle and colored twine.
A writer who types first can still manage something when given a notebook.
A digital animator can still manage something when given a sketchbook.
A digital painter can still manage something when given a paint brush.
A professional chef can still manage something with a grill from Walmart.
A baker can still manage something with a toaster oven.
A stonemason can still manage something with cheaper practice tools.
A woodcarver can still manage something with a pocket knife.
A comic artist can still manage with children's drawing stencils.
An interior decorator can still manage with cardstock and doll furniture.
An architect can still manage with hand-scored graph paper.
A musician can still manage with dollar tree variants of their instruments.
A found materials sculpturist is defined by their ability to manage with a wheelbarrow of scraps.
An AI "artist" cannot manage without ChatGPT or DalAI.
It's not a tool. It's theft.

People are being so annoying about Doug's optimism around AI. He's optimistic about AI's usage in the world of medicine and technology - in those areas, AI genuinely can change the world for the better. He also believes safeguarding for artists needs to be in place when it comes to the generative stuff. But, of course, people are allergic to nuance online.
He's also obviously not pro AI music in any way, he constantly plays music on stream and none of it has been AI. He's moved away from AI art stuff due to his moral concerns around it and the issue of safeguarding for artists. He only really uses AI for his content either as a shitpost generator, or to help him with coding. It's not like he's out here stealing money from the pockets of artists.
#bit sick of seeing this well intentioned dude constantly being mischaracterised online tbh#especially in light of his latest video where he's clearly burned out.#in part due to his own perfectionism but also due to people constantly having the most uncharitable responses to his takes.#people need to grow up and stop thinking in black and white#AI is a tool at the end of the day. a tool can be used for good or evil depending on who has their hands on it.#I'm against art theft and I believe all generative stuff should be opt in#but for medical stuff? I'm 100% pro AI#mine#dougdoug

in case you struggle with basic comprehension of the concept of consequence as much as you do with the difference between wrenched and wretched, come walk with me.
chatgpt has an input limit of approximately 4000 characters.
my fics are, in total, approximately 1310408 characters.
that means putting all my fics through chatgpt would require you to make about 328 separate inputs.
(are you still keeping up? this next part is tough, so hold onto your binky)
per query, chatgpt produces 4.32g of co2.
4.32g 328 times is 1417.16g. 1417.16g is 1.417kg.
you could emit the same amount of co2 doing either of the following:
boiling 21 kettles of water
growing four cucumbers in a greenhouse
streaming 9 hours of netflix (the entire first season of arcane, if you need a recommendation)
or, if you were to do something stupid like pay openai to get chatgpt plus to feed it my work in a single pdf query, you'd have spent $20. you know what you could have done with those $20? bought a stanley tools curved-claw wood-handled nailing hammer and hit yourself right between the eyes with it to save me and the environment from the silly ideas you come up with in your soft-boiled head.
#my works are public lmao they've already been scraped i assure you#but sure go ahead and waste your time abusing a documented environmentally harmful tool in the name of online squabbles#nice work diva#fucking dingus#fang answers#i've started just blocking these when they come in without responding bc hurrdurr but this one in particular is just extra stupid sorry#oh and#FUCK AI

🇺🇸 Before purchasing the iconic ICQ Messenger from Mirabilis, AOL Inc. had already developed its own internet messaging tool. Released in May 1997 as a stand-alone download for Microsoft Windows, AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) quickly became the go-to platform for online communication. Created by American Online Inc., AIM used the OSCAR and TOC protocols to connect users in real time, becoming a cultural phenomenon by the late 1990s.
💾 At its peak, AIM had the largest share of the instant messaging market in North America, particularly in the United States, where it held 52% of the market as of 2006. This figure excludes other AOL-related instant messaging software like ICQ and iChat. AIM's main competitors included ICQ (which AOL acquired in 1998), Yahoo! Messenger, and MSN Messenger. AOL had a notable rivalry with PowWow and Microsoft, sparking the "chat wars" in 1999.
🚶♂️ The AIM mascot, designed by JoRoan Lazaro, debuted with the first release in 1997. This yellow stickman-like figure, known as the "Running Man," appeared on all AIM logos and wordmarks and was always featured at the top of the buddy list.
👩🎓🧑🎓 AIM was particularly popular among teens and college students in the United States and beyond. Its away message feature allowed users to share their whereabouts, thoughts, and plans with friends, making it a staple of daily digital interaction. AIM wasn't just a messaging app; it was a way of life.
📉 Despite its early success, AIM's popularity began to decline in the 2010s. The rise of Gmail's Google Talk, the advent of SMS, and the explosive growth of social networks like Facebook led to a decrease in AOL subscribers. AIM's fall from grace is often compared to other once-dominant services like Myspace.
📆 In June 2015, AOL was acquired by Verizon Communications, which later merged AOL and Yahoo into Oath Inc. Unfortunately, on December 15, 2017, AIM was discontinued, marking the end of an era.
💔 Though AIM is no longer with us, its impact on digital communication remains unforgettable. It paved the way for the instant messaging services we rely on today, leaving behind a legacy of nostalgia and innovation.

#especially now cuz like maybe at the beginning if you werent terminally online you get a pass#but now when its very common knowledge how stupid and even harmful these tools can be its like come on now...
