OUR HISTORY IS ONE DRENCHED IN BLOOD
[…] his brother, Paciano Mercado, was a disciple of Burgos, '72 meant for Rizal the childhood trauma of a change of name — from Mercado to Rizal — and the wound was obviously still festering when, years later, he defiantly dedicated his second novel to the martyred priests.

Okay, hear me out. One of the things I enjoy most during clinic year is the thrill of having my labsheets approved. Before our forms are signed, we have to answer particular questions or perform procedures. Without the labsheet approval, you will not be able to dispense your patient's lenses.
You never really know what question or task will hit you and the uncertainty of it all challenges me to be on top of my active recall game. It allows me to revisit past lessons and gauge which areas I have yet to read more of.
It's also during this time that my past notes come in very handy. There are days I regret wasting my time from the past for not studying as productive as I hope to be. It was tiresome scanning all of my notes, backing up files, and never really opening them as much as I want to.
Earlier this month, I attended a youth summit geared towards research innovation. One of the instruments available in the fair was a weighing scale that also measured muscle and visceral fat. I haven't worked out in a long time. Hence, I was both surprised and happy to see that most of my weight still comes from muscle and that my visceral fat is at 1%.
The present version of myself is grateful for the hardwork I have put in the past. It may not be perfect or as seamless, but it is enough to give me a headstart for this tiring semester. These are things that are not directly specified on the checklist for clinic preparations. But these are things I could suggest to the next batch of clinicians. Stay physically healthy so you will have energy during and after clinic + store your notes (!!)

it’s the best day of the year! today is the birthday of the poetry of my life, my dear papa cesar. initially i wanted to go on a full day trip to osaka and kobe, but i decided to just go on a nice long walk to celebrate. i feel like i will feel my father’s day deeper and slower that way.
i visited the Daihikaku Senkōji Temple in Arashiyama. the bridge and the bamboo grove are always packed with tourists, but the area further into the river was so peaceful and quiet.
the hike was quite a breather, both in the sense that i was out or breath and it was tranquil. but it’s a pretty easy climb and did not make me feel scared, except for the snake i saw amid the stairs >.<
the temple was empty when i reached it, and it was absolutely beautiful. it felt like. we could write free notes in the notebook they provided, so i wrote a little letter for my papa cesar.
i will definitely go back again. it truly felt like spirited away (just like all the mountain trails here lol)
the skies, mountains, the rivers, the flowers, and the birds were all singing a birthday song to my papa 🤍

Talking about one's self [Part 2]
In this series of posts, I'll be posting about some declarative statements that can be used when talking about one's self in a conversations or during self-introductions.
2) Expressing Likes and Desires
Expressing something that you already like as a declarative sentence and expressing something that you like or want to do as an intention (not yet done) is often expressed as "gusto" in Tagalog. It can both mean like and want.
Gusto ko / ko(ng)
Usually followed by a pronoun or an action word, to express desire to do something or express fondness/liking for a certain hobby. If the action word is in contemplative aspect, then it might be expressing desire to do something. If the action word is in imperfect aspect that implies it is regularly being done, then it might be expressing fondness or liking for a hobby or an activity.
Examples:
Hanga ako sa pamumuno ni Lea. Gusto ko siya maging kaibigan. (Trans: I admire Lea's leadership. I want her to be my friend.) "siya" is a pronoun referring to Lea
Gusto kong kumain ng Jollibee Chickenjoy. (Trans: I want to eat Jollibee Chickenjoy.)
Gusto kong makita mag-perform nang live ang Blackpink. (Literal: I want to see Blackpink perform live.) Both the action words "kumain" (to eat) and "makita" (to see/watch) are in contemplative aspect, therefore the speakers express desire to do those activities.
Gusto kong namamasyal sa probinsya tuwing bakasyon. (Trans: I like visiting and going around the province every time I stay for a vacation.) The action word "namamasyal" (to visit and stroll -- visiting and strolling) is in imperfect aspect, meaning that it is still being done, in the process of being completed, or is regularly happening ("tuwing" (every time...)). When translated to english, it becomes a noun in function.
Gusto kong maging...
This phrase literally means, "I want to become..." and it can be followed by a noun with or without a modifier.
Examples:
Gusto kong maging matagumpay na negosyante. (Trans: I want to become a successful entrepreneur.) "negosyante" means entrepreneur, which is a noun and modified by the adjective "matagumpay" which means successful
Gusto kong maging oncologist, 'pag nakatapos na ko ng pag-aaral. (Literal: I want to become an oncologist when I finish my studies.) oncologist is a noun that is specific to people
Gusto kong magkaroon ng...
This is the combination of has/have and expressing like statements. It translates to "I want to have..."
Examples:
Gusto kong magkaroon ng bag na Chanel. (Trans: I want to have a Chanel bag.)
Gusto kong magkaroon ng maraming pera! (Trans: I want to have lots of money!)
Note: In actual conversations, sometimes "magkaroon" is dropped and simply use the "Gusto kong..." or "Gusto ko ng..." since both phrases expresses for things or events that are still yet to happen or will happen in the future, which is also being implied in "Gusto kong magkaroon..." sentences. Example: both sentences above can also be stated as "Gusto ko ng bag na Chanel," and "Gusto ko ng maraming pera!" Although the desire to possess both things are not explicitly stated, the speaker's meaning is left to be interpreted based on the context of conversation.
Gusto ko si ____ / ng ____
Usually followed by nouns. "Si" is followed by proper pronouns especially if a name of a person, while "ng" is usually followed by common or abstract nouns.
Examples:
Gusto ko si Ben dahil hindi siya nagsasabi ng mga birong sexist. (Literal: I like Ben because he doesn't tell sexist jokes.) "Ben" is a name of a person. "Si" becomes a marker for a proper noun.
Gusto ko ng sariling bahay para magkaroon na ko ng privacy. (Literal: I want my own house for me to have privacy.) "Bahay" is a common noun or object meaning house, while the word "sarili" is a modifer that means my own or mine.
Additional notes:
Most of the ko pronouns used can be substituted by other pronouns like mo, ninyo, niya, nila, natin, and namin.
Pay attention to how si and ng are used to be familiarized with these

It's my first time going to IKEA. I got to eat the infamous meatballs but I was disappointed. It tasted ordinary. The salmon and the almond cake were the only good ones.

Every once in a while, we should all get a break. Everyone deserves one! Every after exams, a semestral break occurs. This serves as a reward for student’s hard works. From those all-nighters, becomes all-day adventures! The semestral break isn’t just a pause from academics, but also a chance to learn new hobbies, engage in new activities, and most importantly, make memories with the people you love.
My semestral break was fun! I’m very happy I got to spend time with my family, because I rarely see them. We all went to Bambanti and rode on the carousel. I haven’t ridden one ever since the pandemic started. After riding the carousel I saw one of my boardmates, and we watched a concert of the famous band “SunKissed Lola”. I am so happy I got to watch a concert! I haven’t watched one. Before the pandemic, my favorite band “Ben&Ben” went there, and I didn’t get to watch it due to the traffic and the amount of people. Anyway, I really, really enjoyed watching the concert!! But sadly, I had to leave because I spent almost an HOUR watching them, while waiting for the band to play my favorite song of theirs and also because we didn’t get to go around the booths. Some of the booths were closed, but I saw the others and they were pretty! I can’t believe the amount of effort and time they took to finish those. Some of the scarecrows scared me, like the monkey-like one. But still, it was a very enjoyable experience! I also finally got to buy those balloons with lights! We got home late, but I am very satisfied with that experience! The next day, I and my dad planned to change our screen protectors due to the cracks. We went in the afternoon, but our problem was we didn’t have any parking space. I’m happy I got to go through different routes! Sometimes, going the same way to the place and back, it bores me. So seeing new sites make the ride less boring. When we got there, the sky was so pretty! And after repairing our screen protectors we went  to this café called “Brews and Bouquets”. I got a Salted Caramel Latte while my dad got an Americano. Their drinks were very delicious. I was very satisfied! We got my mom and sister drinks because they called us and said they also wanted drinks. I spilled their drinks a little bit…but I’m glad my sister didn’t get mad. She can get dramatic and then she doesn’t want the drink anymore. She didn’t finish her drink so I did. I never would've thought strawberry drinks would taste this good! I’m not a fan of strawberry drinks because their too sweet most of the time, but this drink wasn’t too sweet! I enjoyed it very much. This is a very memorable moment for me, because my parents are busy and so am I so we barely get to spend time together.  I also got to spend time with my cousin too! I missed her so much! We barely talk anymore due to us both being busy with school. We both talked about what’s happening in our lives. We both ranted to each other about our problems. We also played badminton together! It was fun!!  Thanks to her,  I finally know how to serve in badminton! She also told me she got me a ribbon flower bouquet from her classmate, and she got me a sketchbook as a belated Christmas gift because we had some… issues during the Christmas vacation. In exchange, I got her a bracelet. Thought, I don’t know if she’d wear it because I don’t think she’s a fan of bracelets… but I hope she still loves it! Even if  she started school early she made sure she’d spend time with me. That’s one thing I love about her. Despite our families having issues she still remains being friends with me and being with me.
The semestral break gave me a chance to catch up with my sleep and improve my health. During school days, I sleep VERY late due to the amount of work given to us. I also got in touch with my creative side. Ever since school started, my skills in drawing and my imagination had sadly started to decrease. I’m so glad I got to practice my skills even in a very short amount of time. I finally got to fill the pages of my empty sketchbook.  There are some times where my drawings don’t look good nor reach my expected output, but I always tell myself that I’ll improve more with practice. I took care of the dog while my parents were gone, and got productive with my chores,  which made me very happy of myself because I tend to get lazy and only do some of my chores, or I don't do them at all. I also tutored my sister in her Chinese lessons. My parents and her look up to me to teach her because I was an honor student in Chinese. There are times that she didn’t want me to teach her, which is very annoying, but no matter how hard she resists on me to not teach her I always still do. I’m very happy to give her tips in her lessons.
Sometimes, I want the semestral break to last longer, but nothing ever lasts forever. It sucks I had to get back to school again. But the semestral break gave me a lot of lessons and I can’t wait to apply it in my everyday life. The semestral break also showed me that spending time with people you love most is important, because you’ll never know when they’re going to be gone. It made me appreciate the small things in life like just simply spending time with my family in our house playing PANTS or watching our favorite show. Going back to school is dreadful, but at the very least, I'll have these memories with me. The time we spent with each other is definetly worth more than anything in this world.

Today marks my last full day in our province before leaving for university. It's weird to think that no matter how many times I have moved places my entire life, the process of packing my bags and leaving never gets easy. I have always envied those who can stay at their own homes with their family despite studying in college, but I guess growth never happens inside your comfort zone. All the community work my family has done and exposed me to gives me the drive to take the leap of faith, and work hard to earn the experiences I need to effectively help people.
One of the many things I hold on to during departure is the thought of someday--that someday, I will go back as a better version of myself; that someday, I will return with the added knowledge I can apply to the community. That someday, I'll be back with a new skillset I can use to practice and talk more about eye health.
I would have loved to study and make content this week but on my last few days here, I found myself doing the opposite. I barely read my books and I decided to just enjoy the last moments of bliss before I once again enter the training grounds of Optometry school.
Here's a reminder that sometimes, sacrifices like these are necessary. If we become the best we can be---a hands on employee, a selfless doctor, a competent lawyer, a righteous accountant, a responsible engineer, an insightful educator--then I believe that we can make this world a better place one heartbeat at a time. ❣️

okay but if latin teacher speirs taught at my old high school he'd just have a cult following. we were a high pressure environment and for some weird reason the strictest teachers were everyone's favorites (well i say for some reason but the reason is that we were all honors class weirdos that liked a challenge). sure he's got a massive ruler but i bet there'd be a chunk of the student population that'd be ready to swear fealty to him. (and much like some of our strictest teachers, i feel like speirs has at least a few students he is reluctantly fond of)
OH FUCK NO WAY SAME AT OUR SCHOOL TOO WHAHAHAAH
at my highschool my latin teacher managed to create a cult simply by teaching us what the word defenstration meant and where it came from. we would symbolically throw this little lion plushie out the window (the school mascot was a lion, so we had those lil lion plushies at the school merch store) as like. a weekly ritual every wednesday, because that was when we'd have our 2 hour long latin lecture. all the other teachers were appalled, our latin professor wanted nothing to do with us. unfortunately for him, we were his best performing class. lmao.
he also was like. a priest. and tried to scare us all with stories of saints, but that didn't deter us and we were a bit too interested in the brimstone and fire bits for the stuff to have its intended effect. so he'd just give up and tell us all the stories to get us to memorize our vocab. it was like a little reward. we'll score 100% on this next pop quiz and you'll tell us the story of how st bartholomew was skinned alive pls. thank you.
