Writing Notes: The Classical Period
The Classical Period of music - an era that lasted from approximately 1730 to 1820, although variations on it extended well into the middle of the 19th century.
Classical period composers and performers came from Europe, but it did not take long for the music to find its way to European colonies around the globe.
Many composers and musicians were based in the Austrian capital of Vienna, which was the musical center of Europe during the time period.
Musicologists and casual music fans use the general term "classical music" to describe the work of composers ranging from J.S. Bach to Igor Stravinsky to Philip Glass. The Classical period, though, is a specific era in music history that spanned much of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Characteristics of Classical Period Music
Important forms of the Classical period include the string quartet, opera (including opera buffa and opera seria), trio sonata, symphony (traditionally written in sonata form), string quartet, and solo concertos for a variety of instruments. These musical forms have several elements in common.
Simplicity: Compared to the Baroque period music that preceded it, Classical period music places greater emphasis on simplicity, tonal harmony, single-line melodies, and enlarged ensembles. Unlike the extravagant melodies and ornamentations of high Baroque music, the new style of music framed somewhat simple melodies and buttressed them with large ensembles. Melodies could be appropriated from folk music and arranged to produce musical development with various modulations in tonality, tempo, and dynamics. This trend would only expand during the Romantic period, which followed the Classical era.
Classicism: The beginning and middle of the eighteenth century showed a surge in a stylistic movement known as Classicism, whose adherents revered Classical antiquity, including the works of early fifth-century Greek artists and the architecture of Classical Greece. Admiration for the art of Classical antiquity manifested in the musical taste of the eighteenth-century Classical era. The standard musical forms that dominated the musical compositions of the Classical period aimed to embrace order, simplicity, strength, and a celebration of humanity—all of which aligned with a reverence for Classical Greece.
Increased accessibility: During the Classical period, many composers still worked in the courts of aristocrats, but public concerts were commonplace throughout Europe, which allowed members of the middle classes to partake in the musical forms. This made Classical era music somewhat more egalitarian than much of Baroque music, which was often presented as chamber music exclusively for upper-class audiences.
Instruments of the Classical Period
During the Classical period in music history, the piano overtook the harpsichord and organ as the primary keyboard instrument. Other musical instruments prominently featured in the new musical style included:

Composers of the Classical Period
Vienna was the epicenter of European Classical music, and the composers who worked out of Vienna were sometimes referred to as members of the Viennese school.
Great composers of the Viennese school included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, and Ludwig van Beethoven, all of whom are foundational to the Classical period of music (although Beethoven's later works are commonly linked to the Romantic era).
Other famous composers of the period included Johann Christian Bach, Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Antonio Salieri, and Muzio Clementi.
Classical era music followed the late Baroque period of music.
It maintained many styles of the Baroque tradition but placed new emphasis on elegance and simplicity (as opposed to Baroque music’s grandiosity and complexity) in both choral music and instrumental music.
It was followed by the Romantic period.

ChatGPT has already wreaked havoc on classrooms and changed how teachers approach writing homework, since OpenAI publicly launched the generative AI chatbot in late 2022. School administrators rushed to try to detect AI-generated essays, and in turn, students scrambled to find out how to cloak their synthetic compositions. But by focusing on writing assignments, educators let another seismic shift take place in the periphery: students using AI more often to complete math homework too.
Right now, high schoolers and college students around the country are experimenting with free smartphone apps that help complete their math homework using generative AI. One of the most popular options on campus right now is the Gauth app, with millions of downloads. It’s owned by ByteDance, which is also TikTok’s parent company.
The Gauth app first launched in 2019 with a primary focus on mathematics, but soon expanded to other subjects as well, like chemistry and physics. It’s grown in relevance, and neared the top of smartphone download lists earlier this year for the education category. Students seem to love it. With hundreds of thousands of primarily positive reviews, Gauth has a favorable 4.8 star rating in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
All students have to do after downloading the app is point their smartphone at a homework problem, printed or handwritten, and then make sure any relevant information is inside of the image crop. Then Gauth’s AI model generates a step-by-step guide, often with the correct answer.
From our testing on high-school-level algebra and geometry homework samples, Gauth’s AI tool didn’t deliver A+ results and particularly struggled with some graphing questions. It performed well enough to get around a low B grade or a high C average on the homework we fed it. Not perfect, but also likely good enough to satisfy bored students who'd rather spend their time after school doing literally anything else.
The app struggled more on higher levels of math, like Calculus 2 problems, so students further along in their educational journey may find less utility in this current generation of AI homework-solving apps.
Yes, generative AI tools, with a foundation in natural language processing, are known for failing to generate accurate answers when presented with complex math equations. But researchers are focused on improving AI’s abilities in this sector, and an entry-level high school math class is likely well within the reach of current AI homework apps. Will has even written about how researchers at Google DeepMind are ecstatic about recent results from testing a math-focused large language model, called AlphaProof, on problems shown at this year’s International Math Olympiad.
To be fair, Gauth positions itself as an AI study company that’s there to “ace your homework” and help with difficult problems, rather than a cheating aid. The company even goes so far as to include an “Honor Code” on its website dictating proper usage. “Resist the temptation to use Gauth in ways that go against your values or school’s expectations,” reads the company’s website. So basically, Gauth implicitly acknowledges impulsive teenagers may use the app for much more than the occasional stumper, and wants them to pinkie promise that they’ll behave.
Prior to publication, a spokesperson for ByteDance did not answer a list of questions about the Gauth app when contacted by WIRED over email.
It’s easy to focus on Gauth’s limitations, but millions of students now have a free app in their pocket that can walk them through various math problems in seconds, with decent accuracy. This concept would be almost inconceivable to students from even a few years ago.
You could argue that Gauth promotes accessibility for students who don’t have access to quality education or who process information at a slower pace than their teacher’s curriculum. It’s a perspective shared by proponents of using AI tools, like ChatGPT, in the classroom. As long as the students all make it to the same destination, who cares what path they took on the journey? And isn’t this just the next evolution in our available math tools? We moved on from the abacus to the graphing calculator, so why not envision generative AI as another critical step forward?
I see value in teachers thoughtfully employing AI in the classroom for specific lessons or to provide students with more personalized practice questions. But I can’t get out of my head how this app, if students overly rely on it, could hollow out future generations’ critical thinking skills—often gleaned from powering through frustrating math classes and tough homework assignments. (I totally get it, though, as an English major.)
Educational leaders are missing the holistic picture if they continue to focus on AI-generated essays as the primary threat that could undermine the current approach to teaching. Instead of arduous assignments to complete outside of class, maybe centering in-class math practice could continue to facilitate positive learning outcomes in the age of AI.
If Gauth and apps like it eventually lead to the demise of math homework for high schoolers, throngs of students will breathe a collective sigh of relief. How will parents and educators respond? I’m not so sure. That remains an open question, and one for which Gauth can’t calculate an answer yet either.

how did i get into swe
i have a bachelors degree in comp math, also known as applied mathematics - computer science emphasis. despite the name, i didnt really feel like i was a cs major regardless since most of my electives i chose as an undergrad were mainly theory.. I didn't take a lot of swe-centered courses. My courses in undergrad primarily focused on topics such as combinatorics in latex, n-color cyclic compositions, and linear algebra in r.
after my bachelors degree i ended up going to grad school to obtain a masters degree in theorical physics since i fell so daymn hard in love for physics as an undergrad- oof im !
missed coding for a few years.. ended up going to coding boot camp to sharpen my skills here we are <33

no.
I currently am enrolled in a grad school level computer science course at the moment. But I'm enrolled as a "non-seeking degree grad student", or at least that's what it says on my transcripts. Currently, I'm still trying to figure out if I'm ready to commit to a second round of grad school for a second masters or phd.
May or may not take a few more grad level cs courses in the fall & spring; we'll see!
I am enrolled for the fall to take a bunch of random community college courses, one of which is cs, the others of which are like art lol.
The programming language class will be quite nostalgic, cause it's the same programming language i learned as an undergrad.. aww 🫶 It's quite unfortunate I don't really use that language at any of my jobs though.. One of my jobs primary focuses on C# backend so yeah c:

BUT IM IN THE HIGHEST LEVEL at level 3 we're all professional devs and we have to turn in a fullstack app with aws lambda and the works.. a working database and everything WHYY?!? LOL

Answering questions about Czechia (part 1)
Hello.
During summer, I received and then answered a few questions about my home country - specifically, I received 1 question directly under a poll about Czechia and then 2 questions in a private chat. Everything from 1 person... but that's fine.
It took me a long time before I was able to get to a public answer (although I did answer the person in their private chat), but, here's the 1st one (the other two will be in different posts).
So, the first question @ropeydopeyiwillchokethee gave me was:
Q. N. 1. "What is the public opinion on Czech Artists? Specifically Dvorak and Alphonse Mucha."
Before you continue, a small warning: I will be using our czech names of the cities/towns/villages + the actual way we write the names of the artists - I'm just used to it, sorry 😅):
I won’t lie, Antonín Dvořák and Alfons Mucha belong to a group of the most popular artists among czech citizens in my opinion: at least at schools I’ve been attending, we were actively taught about these two (in Music and Art classes at my primary school/elementary school and in History classes at my grammar school).


I don’t know how it is at other schools but considering my peers know very well who Dvořák and Mucha were, I’m sure they were educated about them, as well.
Plus, there’s actually a lot of other ways people can learn about these two men: there are documentaries, there are books, there are series, Mucha's art is often used as a design on magnetic bookmarks, mugs, etc. (I own some of these myself), and Dvořák's compositions are known to this day and several of them are still played - he even has a museum in a village named Vysoká u Příbramě you can attend.

Of course, like always and everywhere, there are some people who don't pay attention at school and/or don't care about any type of art, so these wouldn’t know who you are talking/asking about but most Czechs know who Dvořák and Mucha were, respect their part in our history and even enjoy what they gave us.
So, in conclusion, I’d say that Czech opinions of these two artists are pretty positive.
Truly sorry for the delay - I can't promise I'll be faster next time, I can only try to.

Martha and Jen are sisters, making Sylvia and Denise cousins. They are two years apart in age (with Sylvia as the older of the two) and each leaves on her respective journey at 18 years old.
Sylvia started as a Bleach OC and used to be named Lilybell, while Denise was created for an unfinished lineup of characters representing musical keys (she was D minor, hence her name). Both are drastically different characters now than how I envisioned them at the time of their conception.
Sylvia's tag [#little songbird] is a nickname Roger used for her when he was still alive.
Denise's tag [#forest for the tree] is in reference to her last name, which means "solitary tree." It symbolizes her tendency to isolate herself due to recurring abandonment issues as a result of her father's disappearance, even though trees usually thrive in community by nourishing each other through interconnected root systems. However, after letting go of her fears and allowing others into her life (finding her "forest" so to speak), she becomes a source of shelter, strength, and comfort for those around her.
Sylvia can be shortened to Syl and Denise to Dena (pronounced "DEE-nuh"); they have a few other nicknames but those are the most common ones.
The descriptions in this post pertain to the main timeline; that is, Sylvia and Denise's adventures across Unova and a few other regions they travel to with the background details exactly as described above. Several other AUs exist, most notably two PLA AUs (one for each of them), Denise's Paldea AU in which she and her mother move there instead of Unova, and a few different Sylvia AUs in which her confrontation with Team Plasma plays out slightly differently. In addition to these, I occasionally put my girls in the universes of other franchises (Bleach, Stardew Valley and Ace Attorney to name a few), but many details there are far less consistent considering the characters weren't created with those universes in mind. As such I generally don't like to discuss them as much, but they are very fun nonetheless and often help me recontextualize how I view their canon storyline.

Mermay 2024 - 3 - 'Love and Peace'
Beneath the waves of the Mor Bras, the Great Sea that surrounds the Armorican Peninsula, there is a city lost to time. Ker-Ys was once the jewel of a great kingdom, a beacon of prosperity and magic. But dark forces worked against the city and it was destroyed in a powerful magical storm, its princess condemned to live alone as a mermaid in her ruined home. But Ahes was resilient and clever, discovering that, while she could never again be human, she could make other Marie-Morgane. Taking in the lost and outcast of Alvez, Ys-Beneath-the-Waves rises again.

Val's Notes: The prompt for this one, suggested by a viewer was "Love and Peace" I originally was going to go for a different vibe on it and use Renee and Ailinor for "warrior/armor" but went in a different direction. I went pretty deep on the design here.
The medieval concept of "Courtly Love" is very important to the Marie-Morgane, and part of their intricate Courtship ritual, of which the cleric Ailinor, and her paramour, the knight Renee, are a great example. I wanted to do something that showcased their relationship a bit more, since they are probably my favourite couple of the Marie-Morgane (Sorry Adele/Fleur!)
I decided to make an homage to one of the iconic Modern interpretations of the middle ages, the unparalleled work of Edmund Leighton in his 1900 masterpiece Godspeed in feel and composition.
I tried to replicate the architecture in the scene, but replace it with the quiet, lonely atmosphere of the sunken city of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves. The city was once the grandest in the North, but was destroyed by magic, nature and treachery. It is a ruin, overgrown by coral and maritime floraa, and the Marie-Morgane share it with fish, turtles and other creatures, including some rather nasty ones.
This scene takes place at the gate leading out of Castle-Hill, one of the three high points of the city. Ker-Ys was built within a great seawall, a network of balconies and bridges reaching from the sea-level gates down to the Lower Wards. When the city flooded, the city was quickly destroyed as water rushed down from the breaches walls.
For Renee's outfit, I really wanted to give her something that stood out as part of her new world, not merely her old human armor. She wears a tight, form-fitting shark-leather shirt, a coral gorget and a pair of turtle-shell pauldrons, fitted together with a thick shark-leather belt. Her weapon is an espadon, a polearm developed by the Marie-Morgane resembling the fin and bill of a swordfish, which serves as the primary weapon of the average soldier. The strip of cloth tied around the espadon you may recognize as part of Ailinor's old cleric robes, a token given to her girlfriend!
I changed the poses from Godspeed, as the keen-eyed may notice. In the original, the Lady ties a token to the knight's arm as he rides into battle. This moment of intimacy is held at arm's length, in accordance to the tropes of Courtly Love, but Renee and Ailinor have moved from that expression to a more direct, open and intimate relationship, closing the emotional distance that exists as the ideal of Courtly Love. They also meet alone, as Renee patrols the upper levels of the city, rather than a fleeing moment as an army marches away.

Back in 2019, I launched a special series for Mermay, an art project to develop a small, but important part of the lore of Alvez, the world of Kroashent. The Marie-Morgane of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves are one of several merfolk races of the world. For this project, I decided to "adapt" each of the Dungeons and Dragons Character Classes into a character as they may appear in Alvez, then transform these characters into mermaids with art and short stories! Since then, I've been working hard on developing the world and the characters who live, there, even writing an ongoing novella, Kroashent: Bal des Loups, which you can read right now, for free!

Journaling - Visual Outline
The most important principles of design are unity and variety, balance, emphasis and subordination, directional forces, repetition and rhythm, and scale and proportion.
Unity is when a piece of art has consistent or similar elements that go together.
An example of unity is Composition in Red, Blue, and Yellow by Piet Mondrian because he uses primary colors and also repeated lines.
Variety is when a piece of art has diverse elements, which is the opposite of unity.
An example of variety is Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition VII. This piece is part of a series and focuses on figurative work. There isn’t any unity to this piece, but that is what makes you want to look for meaning in it.
Balance is a way of arranging different influences so that the end result is equilibrium.
I found another Kandinsky picture and wanted to use it to illustrate balance. I really like his art. I know that Squares with Concentric Circles technically was done as a color study, but I think it’s beautiful and it reminds me of Andy Warhol’s style.
Emphasis is the way an artist draws attention to a certain part of a work of art through placement, size, color, or a different color.
Subordination is used by artist to make some areas of a piece of art more important than others. This is accomplished through placement, color, or size to get the desired effect.
Directional forces are used by artists to draw the viewer’s attention along different paths.
Repetition is when an artist uses the same elements more than once. Rhythm is an ordered repetition of dominant and subordinate elements in a design or work of art.
A famous piece of art that shows repetition is Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. At first glance it looks like it’s just the same can of soup over and over again, but when you look closely, you will see that there are all different flavors. Each can was framed separately, but arranged in 4 lines of 8 cans each.
Scale is how the sizes of different objects relate to each other. Proportion is how different parts of a work of art relate to each other and the work overall.
Scale is famously illustrated by Raphael in The School of Athens. I first saw this picture in one of my Humanities classes. Raphael painted Plato and Aristotle in the middle of the painting, where you eye is immediately drawn. They appear to be bigger than the other people in the background, which shows how important they are in the scene being painted.
Writing and Looking
The artwork I chose to create a recipe for is Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Diptych,” Fig. 24.23, from page 24.5. Warhol used the same image of Marilyn Monroe 50 times. The 25 images on the left are silk-screened using 5 colors – green, red, pink, yellow, and black. The 25 images on the right are black and white, and they resemble negative strips from a roll of film. There is unity and repetition because the same image of Marilyn’s face is the focal point of each rectangle, although each image is slightly different from all of the others in one way or another. Balance is achieved by having all of the color images grouped together on the left and all of the black and white images grouped together on the right. Additionally, when all of the individual rectangles are grouped, they create two larger rectangles that ultimately create one large rectangle of all of the images.
Connecting Art to My World
Color affected me when I used spray paint to create graffiti on the exit door of my mom’s dance studio. I used different hues that had been used to create the mural of a dancer on one of the walls. The values were both light and dark and the intensity was bright. I wanted the door to look cheerful for our students. The colors were highly saturated so they stood out against the door which was painted grey. I didn’t cover the entire door, so the grey would peek out and provide a contrast to the vibrant colors. If I had to pick a color scheme for my life, it would be monochromatic with different shades of blue. I find blue to be a peaceful and soothing color for me, and it reminds me of being at the beach.
Art Project
I decided to paint a canvas for this project, as I find painting allows me to be creative and clear my mind. I titled this piece, “Light Shining Through the Water.” To be honest, I had created another painting and I hated it, so I painted over the canvas and started over. My brother was very honest and told me I would be better off just pouring red paint over the whole thing and turning that in!
This is what it looked like as it was in process…the path was painted yellow (and it can still be seen even though I painted over it, but in the second painting it looks like a shaft of light).

It was a happy accident, because the second piece felt like it created itself. It represents shafts of light cutting through the water to reach the seaweed below. This is how memories of my Dad come to life for me. Each piece of seaweed is a memory I treasure. When the light shines through, that memory comes back to me and makes me smile. Missing him is represented by the dark areas of the painting, but the light reminds me that his spirit is still with me.
Group 4 - Interactive design allows users on apps or websites engage with elements like animations and videos to enhance the user experience. If the site experiences high engagement and/or users coming back to spend additional time on the app or website, the goal has been achieved. Interactive design takes a website from boring and passive to interesting and immersive, and can even sneak in educational elements!

Alright, Orange Nation, get your jerseys ready! There's a new Anthony in town, and the hype train is officially leaving the station!
Melo Jr. Mania? Kiyan Anthony Already Turning Heads as 'Cuse Freshman to Watch!

The whispers are getting louder, folks. According to a national hoops scribe, Syracuse basketball's prized 2025 signee, Kiyan Anthony, is already a freshman to keep a very close eye on next season! Yes, we're talking about the son of 'Cuse legend and recent Hall of Famer, Carmelo Anthony. The bloodline is strong, and the buzz is building!
This 6-foot-5 four-star shooting guard is a key cog in the Orange's impressive four-man 2025 recruiting class, which currently sits at a solid No. 10 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite. Recently, CBS Sports' Cameron Salerno dropped an article highlighting eight freshmen to monitor in the upcoming 2025-26 campaign. While most of the names were top-10 national prospects, Salerno made sure to include Kiyan Anthony, who, let's not forget, absolutely cooked at the Jordan Brand Classic last month.
Salerno didn't shy away from the obvious comparison, writing, "It's unlikely the younger Anthony will replicate the success his father had during one of the greatest one-and-done seasons in college basketball history." Fair point. But he also emphasized Kiyan's potential impact: "...the 6-foot-5 guard should have a chance to impact winning for a program that has fallen on tough times in recent years... The Orange have missed the NCAA Tournament in four consecutive seasons. This could be a make-or-break year for coach Adrian Autry. Anthony is a skilled shotmaker capable of being a primary option on offense. His upcoming season at Syracuse will be one to monitor."
Look, on paper, Syracuse's 2025 high school class is legit. But the real question is how much burn will Kiyan Anthony get in Adrian Autry's rotation? On one hand, the kid is a threat from beyond the arc. If the 'Cuse wants a real shot at dancing in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, they desperately need to improve their three-point shooting after a rough 2024-25. Anthony could be the answer.

On the other hand, the Orange's roster is currently sitting at 12 scholarship players after the recent commitment of Cincinnati transfer Tyler Betsey, and that includes a decent number of guards and wings. Anthony had a strong senior season for powerhouse Long Island Lutheran, a consensus top-10 national high school team. He's proven he can play at a high level.
