Listen Up!

I have a genius plan!

Step One: Create an amazing band and start writing songs.

Step Two: Aggressivly campaign climbing to the top of the charts.

Step Three: Go on tour at all the biggest arenas.

Step Four: Get asked to do the SuperBowl half time show.

Step Five: Act unsure, but ultimately accept.

Step Six: At the SuperBowl, the stage is dark, the crowd hushed expecting our biggest hit song. A single light shines down on the lead singer in a bright red band uniform. The crowd murmurs, all the band is in these outfits we've never worn before, its not even on brand for us. Trumpets blare, a keyboard pulses, the lead singer begins, "Winner takes aalll,".

Step Seven: It was all a sham. The band, the songs, the promoting, all to play Sweet Victory live at the SuperBowl halftime show. The audience is trapped, the tv producers freaking out. After the performance we disperse, never to play together again, having accomplished our goal.

Step Eight: Go down in history as the ones who fulfilled a promise made to a generation of fans who were robbed.

A Comprehensive Look at Neopian Apples

The Neopian Biology Project has identified >90 items with the word "Apple" in the name that are worth considering as species candidates.

Previously, I tried to categorize these items in roughly alphabetical order, but this time I've tried a new approach. Essentially, I made a few "buckets" that a candidate could fall into, and hoped that by correlating candidates to buckets, the trickier determinations could be made easier.

Because there are 90+ "apple" candidates, I won't be posting every single apple's information. However I will be linking their Jellyneo pages, and you can always find information relevant to the project on our spreadsheet.

First up:

Part 1: Apples that aren't apples

These are candidates that may qualify as distinct species, but are only referred to as "apple" colloquially, and are not actually apples.

These are:

Blue Ice Apple - From space; alien.

Imposter Apple [sic] - "That's no apple!" Possibly a common orange.

Flat Apple Fruit - Neither apple nor Flatfruit

Grapple - Not to be confused for the Grapple Apple.

Pearapple - Species of pear.

Triapple

Arnapple

Blackapple - See below.

Dewy Apple

Pineapple

Pyrapple - Possibly a pineapple. See below.

Many of these species make reference to tasting like an apple, which in these cases I have chosen to take as unironic comparisons rather than some joking "it tastes like an apple because it is an apple!" These specimens also all have un-apple-like (unapfellich) features that make them easy to consider them non-apples, at least morphologically.

The two exceptions/uncertainties are the Pyrapple and Blackapple.

The Pyrapple is not an apple, for certain, but may be a Pineapple. We'll either explore it in another post about Neopian Pineapples, or in its own post, but not here.

The Blackapple requires a closer look:

I hope the inside is not as black as the outside.

There isn't much to go off of here. This specimen is from Apple Bobbing, but if you take all the Apple Bobbing specimens together, this isn't a good indicator of apfellichkeit ("apple-ness"). Both non-apple and apple species are mixed up in Apple Bobbing, and some of the apple species are qualifying candidates while some are variants of other apples (we'll discuss this more in the next part).

The description is also very typical of Apple Bobbing and specimens from the Haunted Woods in general — that specific brand of Neopets humor that hints at something that should concern you, but won't tell you the full extent of the problem or how it occurred. This kind of description has influenced me greatly as a writer and is also the bane of my existence as a scientist.

The deciding factor for me here is that the Blackapple isn't a Black Apple, or a Blackened Apple as we'll see some of later. Blackapple is a new word, akin to the made-up "Triapple," "Arnapple," and "Pineapple" above. Because of this, I have been swayed to consider the Blackapple a unique, non-apple species.

I’m real tired rn and I really wanted to blabber about my guy Des, but I didn’t know what to blabber about that wouldn’t turn into a big ol rant so I did some Desmond headcanons and stuff, both for canon and for my Everybody Lives AU.

Been a hot minute since I’ve done one of these, anyways. Been having headcanon withdrawals sigh. I’ve got lots of voicelines… maybe soon, maybe.

• He actually doesn’t REALLY like cats, although he does think they’re pretty cute. More of a “no fur in MY carpet thank you” kinda guy. Not partial to cats or dogs or rodents or any of that. The one exception has always been Tonia.

• His parents really wanted him to be a surgeon or something, something that’d be attention-grabbing like “oh yeah, MY son’s a TRAUMA SURGEON!” Something that screams important. They got mad at him for going down the therapy route, because they don’t see that as having any value compared a surgeon. Assholes, his parents. Haven’t had a healthy convo with him since.

• He babysat Virginia’s brother Freddie when he was young, since Freddie would need someone watching over him while his parents were busy with Ginny and her pageants. Freddie doesn’t remember Desmond babysitting him, and Desmond hasn’t realized that he’s Virginia’s brother (he’d find this out eventually in the AU). (Also headcanon that Desmond inspired him to be a nurse, since Des was already planning for med school at that point).

• Super sad drunk. This is TECHNICALLY canon, but I’m adding it cos I think it’s interesting.

• He actually swears a lot, outside of work. Loud “GODAMMIT!”’s and “FUCKING HELL!”’s can be heard whenever he messes up some important paperwork or stubs a toe. Or when he finds a certain favorite mug of his broken on the floor. Couldn’t be Tonia, tho. Tonia’s a sweet little angel who would never :).

• In Everybody Lives, he and Dave end up as good friends, while visiting Virginia in the hospital. Plus, bro probs needed some therapy of his own after what happened to his girlfriend (and after witnessing it when it happened), and he needed the company. They stop and talk whenever they bump into each other, and talk over the phone sometimes. On very rare occasions, they’ll pull out some goofy lettuce with some other friends and just chat for a couple hours.

• ^ He smokes some weed every so often, not because he particularly enjoyed the high, but to keep himself from getting too stressed all the time. It doesn’t work at all, but his hope is enough to pull him through. He did it more frequently with Magdalena, and when he was in college. He’s done this less and less as he got older, but he started doing it again after the water contamination, when everything was high-stress all the time and he needed to find any silver lining.

• Bisexual, but he doesn’t know this until Everybody Lives, when he and Lucas bond more over the Things That Happened. He has a mini crisis over this, but it’s less to do with the bisexuality and more to do with his guilt surrounding Magdalena (and some fabricated backstory stuff that I fabricated a bit ago but I’m not counting that).

• When he was a kid, he was given some freshly cut, extra juicy pineapple, and wasn’t warned about the punishment your tongue receives when feasting upon freshly cut, extra juicy pineapple. Thus, he grew up to hate pineapple because all he can think of when he smells it is “ow oof ouch owie ouch ough oof owie-”. No I’m NOT projecting SHUT IT- (I really like pineapple but it has bad memories attached so I can’t eat it normally and I’m sad >:’/ sometimes I can still feel the burn.) This is also the reason that Rainbow mentions Desmond not liking pineapples in one of his calls.

• He like spider :>. Especially fuzzy little jumpy spider :>. And also orb weaver spider :>. Just spider in general, he like spider :>.

• He has a bad habit of isolating himself without meaning to; avoiding his neighbors, keeping small talk outside of work to a minimum, barely every speaking with his coworkers, all of that. This MAY or MAY NOT stem from an innate fear of inadvertently hurting people by being himself and not the specially curated self that he puts on for work and stuff, but we’ll never know sad face.

• In Everybody Lives, he has a hard time sleeping due to the guilt from missing Allen’s call. This has certainly led to some Problems, but he finds a way to cope healthily, eventually.

And that’s about all the brainpower I have atm in one blorbo post, lol. I’ve got more, but idk how to translate hyperfixation thoughts to text, so those will come some other time :3.

Stormbreaker and Point Blanc have an ETA of Saturday so that's when I'm gonna start working on my book timeline. I'm aware that there are discrepancies between the UK and US editions but I got all of my copies of the books used (I spent my Izze budget for the month on these damn books so don't @ me) so they're definitely all US versions so that's what I'm working with.
