I find my choices a little funny in hindsight because Kokoro's outfit is a hiking outfit and it looks nice but it also feels very generic, but I also feel like Leila's outfit looks like she's about to go camping or something. Also I am OBSESSED with Homura's mustache necklace.

I'd like to make a disclaimer that I'm not rating Ranka's outfit 1 because I hate it, I just don't think it makes a good winter outfit necessarily. But does this also mean she's into larme kei and shops at places like MA*RS and Ank Rouge? Also: 1) Yachiyo's cold shoulder sweater dress amuses me for some reason. Girl your shoulders! 2) Green is a very interesting colour choice for Temari.

These are not as awful as the other but somehow most of them has something that ruins the look for me.

The thing is, a magical girl costume is always so extravagant and beautiful, that when we go back to their casual clothes, we expect nothing less. Bu then it comes some disappointment, because they look so plain and simple.

I was thinking about how two of the otome I've enjoyed the most in the last couple of years are ones where the main character is a girl who pretends to be a man due to her circumstances (Birushana and Jack Jeanne), aside from Hakuouki having been my historical otome obsession for over a decade. When I was younger, my favorite Sailor Moon character was Uranus. Revolutionary Girl Utena was one of my favorite anime and Juri my favorite character. Whatever the whole Cardcaptor Sakura cast had going on was my jam. I reread the Rose of Versailles so many times I can't count them. Haruhi from Ouran was the best and most relatable main character ever. Ranka was an icon. Androginous male characters have consistently been my favorites since forever. I always cosplayed guys, and nothing has beaten the feeling of stunning my two lesbian friends into silence the day I dressed as Mukuro from KHR and it suited me so well that I didn't recognize myself in the mirror. What I mean is that at some point you would think I would've put two and two together before 30, but you'd be wrong.

Interesting... I don’t remember any mention of her mom in her Magical Girl Story, though it’s also possible I just forgot about it.

I feel like her mom is implied to be strict here, but also, like, being able to go to a school in an entirely different city isn’t some easy thing, is it? That implies her mom is at least willing to listen and grant Ranka some ground.

It’s possible that her new school is better than her old one, which would fit if her mom just wants Ranka to have a good future/do well in school.

I dunno! There’s not enough information here to know anything about Ranka’s mom. 

To be fair, I’m more interested in parent relationships where it’s more like... teenage angst is causing a disconnect. Not in a way where like the kid is being taught that abusive is love, but parents as people who want the best for you, even if it doesn’t seem like it. I think it’s more interesting than some blanket “oh she’s evil” you know?

When we talk about good LGBT+ representation, I feel like there's a lot of focus on specifics and explicitly labeling characters as one identity or another. And don't get me wrong, it can be so, so cool to see yourself represented in fiction and know that it can't be argued that you're just projecting. But as I'm getting a little older, I'm really starting to appreciate that sometimes the general vibe around the queer characters is just as important as the characters themselves.

One Piece is a series that comes up a lot when we talk LGBT+ anime, because 1) the show itself is HUGE and about as long-running as it gets... and 2) there are quite a lot of queer characters in it.

And on the note of it being as long-running as it is... Yeah, there are things that don't age super well. Jokes that are pretty distasteful, outdated terminology... But overall, it still stands strong as representation that queer anime fans generally reference fondly. Because the overall atmosphere surrounding those characters' existence and their differences is a supportive one. If queer characters are involved, they're almost always allied with our heroes. Even Bon Clay, who was supposed to be working alongside the villains in the arc where he's introduced, has this wild detour where he befriends Luffy and co, seemingly against all odds, and is never depicted as anything other than an incredibly loyal friend. That feels so purposeful to me.

A much lesser-known one is Canaan. And it's one of those shows where they actually throw around the word "love" quite a bit but just never specifically refer to it as romantic. But... I know what platonic love looks like, and the way Maria and Canaan look at each other is not it. But their relationship throughout is so heartfelt and genuine and warm. There is no fetishizing to be seen. The writers' intentions were pretty fucking clear, and they make it so wholesome that you'd have to be an asshole not to support them, for a reason so trivial as the fact that they're both girls. That's the kind of representation I want to see-- even if yeah, I would have loved to hear "Maria's my girlfriend," vs "Maria's my best friend" just once.

And finally, the last one I want to mention for this... The absolute classic... Ouran High School Host Club. Which actually has surprisingly few explicitly queer characters despite... you know... everything else about it. (But let it never be forgotten that both of Haruhi's parents are canonically bi! That detail even made it into the anime adaptation.)

SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE MANGA, but...

Near the end, Haruhi decides to study abroad for a year. And during the farewell party scene, the hosts reveal to all their guests-- who've really grown on them as friends too by this point (rather than just mindless fangirls; there's actually a lot of character development for them in the manga)-- that Haruhi was a girl all along.

Except they don't really.

They think the guests figured it out. It was revealed via this really heartwarming masquerade hunt where they dress her up as a girl and trust that the guests have grown close enough to her as a person by now that they'll be able to recognize her. And they do...

But then it's revealed, after they're all shocked when Ranka refers to Haruhi as his "daughter" within everyone's earshot, that the secret they thought they'd figured out... was that Haruhi was dating Tamaki.

Which was also true by this point! But it has totally different connotations, when they still believed Haruhi to be a boy. And while there was absolutely some fetishizing going on in that case... It was also super heartwarming... to know that they would have kept it a secret for the sake of Tamaki and Haruhi's happiness.

Just supportive vibes all around.

And sometimes that's what really matters.

This entry delves into Fi’s painful past full of betrayal, bullying, and torment, and the idea of making new connections despite the fear she feels from the mere idea of it. Astarion makes an unexpected appearance and helps to change her narrative, even if a little bit. It also has banter. Lots of banter, I swear that’s their love language. Enjoy!

Fi stared above at the stars, appreciating that the darkness enveloped her just enough to obscure her pinched expression of frustration. Tonight she had decided to sleep outside of her tent with Ranka and Sasha. Beside her was the wolf, the warmth that spread from her like a furred blanket that helped chase the chill from her bones. Kilbern had flown into the forest searching for a nice carcass that would make for a delightful midnight snack. Apparently the jerky they’d had at dinner time wasn’t enough for the corvid. Astarion came to mind, the thought of the elf sneaking into the night when he occasionally did the same causing her to snort a laugh. She doubted the vampire would take it well, being compared to a bird, but the pair had more in common than he’d thought.

On the other side of the wolf and tiefling was the large, chestnut form of Ranka, as his large side fell and rose in the way only a slumbering bear could. He blocked the light of the campfire showering her in his shadow that gave her even more security as her wayward thoughts led her in dangerous directions.

"It will be okay, as long as we’re together.”

Memories flooded her mind like an unwelcome haunt in an old, dilapidated building. The memory of warm small hands within her own calloused ones, worn with the amount of times her thin, deft fingers would press on the vibrating strings of her stringed instruments, taunted her. The voice of a precious girl who’d once called Fianna her best friend, eventually turned lovers, and the way she felt the touch of a loved one embracing her own small frame was a toxic and yet intoxicating spell of an emotion. It was the first sign of warmth she’d had in a long time in her childhood aside from Sebastien, and the canine could only do so much. Slowly, her mother and father’s affection transformed into an ugly creature that focused with a cruel sharpness on her skills rather than her emotional health.

Norana. They were only eleven when she’d met the other tiefling at the Academy. She was her first, and only, best friend. She was the reason why she feared Karlach’s advances, platonic as it was, and blocked the barbarian from weaseling her way into her heart. Cursed woman and her charming wiles. Her thoughts held Fianna’s figurative hand as they walked even deeper into the oppressive channels of her mind.

"It will be okay, as long as we’re together.”

What beautiful lies. Norana didn’t know it at the time, of course, but within her slept the dormant predator of betrayal, one that would choose Fianna as her first unsuspecting victim. That predator would strike when they were fourteen after a full year of being harassed by the unhinged group of violent peers.

Fi curled into herself in her blankets and turned to face away from Ranka. She stilled, waiting to confirm that Sasha still slumbered before she dove back into her memories. There was no need to worry her daughter over such meaningless musings.

“I’ll protect you, Fi. Those bullies will never hurt you again, I promise you.”

More beautiful lies that infuriated her. Part of her knew not to blame the girl for leading her tormentors to her that sordid day. Norana was threatened, young, and terrified. If the other tiefling had pushed through her fears to help Fi, likely she would have met the same fate as herself. Still. Still. Why lead them to her? Why purposefully hunt her down so that those ‘bullies’ could cause more harm and chaos to her already bruised heart?

She still tasted the frigid water of the river as they forced her head beneath it, screaming through the wrapped cloth around her mouth so that when they did wrench her above to seek the precious breath she needed, the only thing that would meet her was more water that was poured over her nose and covered mouth. For hours her body felt the suffocating, terror ridden sensation of being drowned and yet not. Confusion ran through her veins as her body had fought, kicked, panicked, and wrestled against her captors to no avail.

For hours, the only thing her crimson eyes would snap onto while being wickedly pulled from one hell to the other was the little blonde tiefling who’d betrayed Fi like the pathetic worm she was. Submerged, then dragged out, and staring with the piercing fury that instilled a terror within Norana that she likely hadn’t felt before.

That day, when the other children had found her and dragged her to the river while they watched and chided and laughed was the day Fianna had given up all hope in all others. At least, those who weren’t animals. They weren’t stupid enough to stoop to such low levels of torture. Animals were instinctive creatures reactive to their nature and nothing more. Torture was a concept lost to them, unless the wells of their morality was poisoned by people.

The violence within Fi had stirred and in that moment, the vengeance and ferocity she was known for twisted and pulled itself free from its leash. She did not want to unleash it onto those that played at drowning her, but to the girl who had called herself lover, and even more painfully, best friend.

Fianna clenched her teeth at the memories until they almost bled. She still smelled the sun-washed, fair head of hair of her friend. The first lotion she’d loved was borrowed from Norana, one of sweet creams and desserts. Fi still marveled at how pretty the other tiefling was, filled with such grace that she herself would never achieve. Moreso, was the intelligence that shown bright from the mind of Norana and the false, luring kindness and consideration she claimed to have. Fi was a fool to believe it. To believe in her.

The tiefling flinched when hot tears that had built in her lids slowly slid their lazy way down the side of her face. She cursed softly to herself. It was less than even a whisper, and yet the emotions in that one curse was powerful enough to threaten the release of the wave of anguish that threatened to spill into the night.

“It will be okay as long as we’re together.”

What fucking lies.

The strained struggle of a tent flap opening snapped her back to her current reality. She walked away from the memories as a slow and cautious instinct took over. Fi wiped the tears from her face by burying it in one of the blankets, but there was no helping the puffiness of her eyes that spoke more than lies ever could.

Sasha whipped her head up from her spot and snuffled with her nose at the strange, new scent. Velvety ears laid back against her skull until the scent became familiar and she gave a languid wag of her tail. One of her favorite people had exited his tent, and Fi knew exactly who it was given her daughter’s gleeful reaction. Damned wolf and her love for that annoying vampire.

Fianna rose from her spot like the dead rose from their graves and pretended to stare at Astarion with eyes bleary from sleep, rather than tears.

Astarion froze in his spot, his elven eyes not needing to adjust to the darkness as his lips curled downwards in frustration. ”Is there any way I can leave my tent without you miraculously knowing that I’m doing so? It’s like you wait for me to leave.”

“Don’t be so loud and I won’t notice you leaving.” She said, though the usual humor in her voice had vanished. Stupid feelings, she needed to work harder to conceal the remnants to her personal nightmare.

“Rather hard to do when you wake up at the slightest of sounds. I blink and you stir awake.”

Fianna regarded him longer than she should have. For a second, and only a second she imagined tearing up before Astarion, telling him of her sorrows, confiding in him, yearning for the love of a friend that she’d lacked in her lifetime. Instead, she gave him a half smile and pulled off her many blankets. She sat cross legged, an amused glint to her eyes as she placed both of her hands on her knees.

”Hunting, I take it?”

”Yes, it’s been a while since someone has delighted me in a taste of their sweet, enthralling ichor and a vampire spawn needs to eat. Well, not eat per se, but- you get what I mean.”

”I’ll come with you. We’ll hunt together.”

”Come with me? Do you miss my presence that much?”

”I miss hunting,” she said. “It’s been forever since we haven’t stolen food from random barrels and crates. It’ll be nice to stretch my legs. Anyway, you don’t have a choice, I’m coming along. And so is Sasha.”

“Don’t have a choice, you say? And what if I vanish into the night?”

“Good luck, city boy. You may be your roguish self, but do you really want to see who will win in a hunt? I’ve been doing this for twelve years, you were a damned magistrate before this.”

There was a look that crossed his face, emotions flickered through his features before he grinned with exposed teeth.

“Pull my hair, why don’t you. Fine, fine, I won’t deny the idea of hunting with a lovely thing like yourself won’t be fun. That, and not having to work so hard is appealing. Are you sure you don’t want to go hunting by yourself and I can wait for you at camp? Since I’m a ‘city boy’ and such. A boy, however, I’m not. I’m older than you by centuries, remember?”

"Nope.” She whistled sharply and the pale wolf shot to her feet, giving Fi a longing look before the tiefling sighed and pointed her chin towards Astarion. “Go, you betrayer.”

Sasha bolted like a spring set free and leapt at Astarion. He yelped in response, his arms coming up to protect himself from the barrage of licks and nuzzles from the wolf half the height of himself.

“Ugh, so much spittle. Down, beast! Down!”

Fi laughed, a full and hearty sound fighting and succeeding in escaping through the cage of sorrow she’d just been trapped in moments before.

“To my absolute bewilderment, she loves you. It hurts my frail heart, but alas, now it means you get to deal with her.”

"Wonderful. I am filled with bliss.”

Fi whistled again and the wolf bounded to her side like a puppy frolicking through sun-drenched meadows. The tiefling roughly patted the canine between her ears and Sasha leaned into her touch, lost in sheer joy.

"Mother! We get to go hunting with the pale one? I have never had a better day in my life!” Despite the growls and grunts Sasha made, Fi could understand her as easily as breathing. That was the benefit to a ranger’s ability to speak to animals.

"That’s right, baby girl. He’ll learn to appreciate your love, just keep at it.”

"What was that? What did she say?” Astarion snapped, his nose wrinkling in suspicion. As much as he’d deny it, he couldn’t help but be involved in any kind of gossip, especially about himself.

“She says you’re a terrible hunter who couldn’t even snag a dying rabbit even if you tried.”

“…clearly you’re a terrible liar. Alright, hurry up then, before I change my mind and leave you here with your terrible wit and slobbery creatures.”

She gave Astarion a wicked grin and stood on her feet, eager to grab her gear and prepare for the hunt. Even more so, she was eager to forget, to ease the hole in her heart as it bled quietly under the guise of smiles and jests.

“It will be okay, as long as we’re together.”

The words haunted her even as she stepped into her tent and grabbed her pack, but tonight she wouldn’t dwell on it any longer. Tonight was dedicated to new friends, as afraid as she was of them, and to the energy that would pump her legs as she ran wild through the forest with her daughter and the intriguing vampire spawn who’s presence would unknowingly become a balm to her being.

people can hate all they want cause i know a lot of people see gumi a specific way especially in certain circles, esp since the Setting (well, a very thin layer of setting but its still setting. she is still meant to be a plucky girl next door teen) of gumi has somewhat become obscured over the years, but i think an underrated aspect of nou's gumi designs are that i think an aspect of ranka lee is creeping back into gumi in the best way and i love it. im not sure what aspect. i don't wanna just plainly say it is ranka's cuteness. i think it is an element of youth most likely, but i can't say it isn't cute. its both... ahhh it is so good

there was always a meta element about it too, like how gumi truly was an underdog versus miku and didn't immediately perform well on release only to pick up steam more than half a year later, maybe more (which doesn't seem like much but in those days it was). it is very ranka lee. so it's good the spirit of her is returning to gumi's design even if maybe i'm being delusional. if anything in terms of the vocaloid scene i think she has returned to being an underdog (this isn't contested btw.)

masami yuuki is a legend but i think he lost the plot for sure around v4. the v3 designs are OKAY. and the spirit of his gumi designs live on as you can see nou frequently references them in her gumi designs (for example the birthday outfit's jacket vest is inspired heavily by the v4 jacket)

Chapter 65

Now Aramis was crying, and Ranka was crying too. How badly Ranka wanted to hold her then. How much it stung to know she couldn’t. They remained like that for a long time—wiping furiously at their eyes, Aramis telling Ranka over and over again how angry she was, and Ranka only saying I know, because she did, truly, and she loved Aramis too much to do anything but take every ounce of anger she’d earned. 

I feel like this scene would have been better suited to literally any book. 

Mainly because, as I keep saying, the author has yet to make us care about Ranka and Aramis. I don’t think for a goddamned second that they actually love one another. Especially not Ranka. 

Besides the fact that I saw this sort of emotional bonding scene happening at the end of the last chapter. 

“Maybe we will, Princess,” Ranka whispered. “Maybe we will.”

Chapter 65 summary: Ranka goes into the room and goes the furthest away from where Aramis is in her bed. Aramis gets kind of angry, but then frustrated over Ranka’s behaviour right now. 

After a moment, Aramis has a break-down because of Foldrey’s betrayal. She explains through her tears about how despite how much her parents loved her and Galen, they still had to put the country first. That Foldrey stepped up in a way that her biological parents couldn’t.

Ranka talks some about loving somebody who turned out to be a piece of shit, and hurting no matter what you do. She talks about how she was found and turned into something that she never wanted to be. The two girls have their break-down bonding moment, even if it’s not the literal kiss and make up scene that I anticipated. 

Ranka finally tells Aramis her surname, the one she was born with. She says that Ranka Volst died along with her sister, but maybe it’s for the best. Because that’s not who she is anymore. 

Chapter 66

“The witches have changed their mind,” he said. “Galen dies at sunset.”

I can’t even be angry over this because I’m honestly super fucking tired of this stupid book. END ALREADY. 

“A few loyal men won’t be enough—but a whole coven might. Ongrum never won the favor of all the witches, correct? Her grip on power is tenuous at best. That was why she needed me.”

At this point, I’d say that the witches are probably not on Ongrum’s side. Especially since most of them have probably heard by now that they’re literally throwing the plague at everybody, and… What’s that? Still a 100% death rate? 

Would anybody willingly side with that?

“All right,” Aramis said quietly, her eyes burning. “Now how do we get my brother back?”

Chapter 66 summary: The chapter opens up with an entire goddamned page of Ranka and Aramis waking up after accidentally cuddling during the night. And OMG u gais, soooo embarrassing!!! Why we needed a full page of this is beyond me.

This moment is interrupted by Percy and Foldrey showing up to say that the witches have decided to kill Galen tonight. Foldrey says that he sent out messengers who should each be getting to those other cities right about now. But even if they decided to act and march their armies, literally none of them would get to Seaswept in time to save Galen. 

Ranka says that if they can’t rely on outside help, then they need to gather their own forces. Foldrey says that half of the Hand deflected to “kill them with kindness” plan Ongrum accidentally offered them. Then about half of those who were left were slaughtered during the attack last night. And half of those who survived, he guesses are probably locked up in the dungeon right now. 

Ranka then says that the witch leader she talked to last night was not on team “Infect the witches with the plague to make us immune”. If she can talk to her again, then she and another coven might back the rest of Foldrey’s men. That would only leave two covens defending Galen and the palace, which they think they can take. 

Chapter 67

Ranka climbed the stairs, and she did not look back.

Chapter 67 summary: We waste two fucking pages with them getting into position. TWO PAGES. NONE OF ANY OF THIS WAS FUCKING NECESSARY TO THE ADVACEMENT OF THE PLOT. 

When they get to the palace, Aramis and Ranka pause. Aramis points out that Ranka still doesn’t have her magic, and they both know that Ranka is going to die, no matter what happens. But she still makes Ranka promise her that she won’t die. Aramis then kisses her, because I don’t think that the author could help herself at this point. 

Chapter 68

Ranka turned the blade over in her hand and stepped forward to battle the woman who had raised her.

Chapter 68 summary: Ranka walks up to where the witches are about to murder Galen. She kind of stands before all of the witches for a second and nobody says or does anything about Ranka’s sudden appearance. 

She then challenges Ongrum to a battle to determine who will lead the coven. 

Ongrum is like “You know that this is a battle to the death, right?” Ranka knows more than anybody what’s on the line here.

about shizuru. because i cannot sleep and therefore cannot be stopped

he has a bridge, tongue, and bellybutton piercing. he refuses to get any ear piercings because he knows they’ll get stuck in his hair - it is fluffy and full of secrets.

he used to work at a maid cafe, courtesy of one of rankas friends. he didn’t especially enjoy it but he was very good at his job. this translates directly to how he acts once he becomes a host.

chronic insomnia and a competitive streak is how he got into ouran in the first place. haruhi bet that he couldn’t. not only did he get in, but he also averages as just a couple points ahead of them.

he has a deep seated needed to be the best at everything.

his favorite food is fruit snacks. those ones with the smiley faces. if someone says that those don’t count as a food, he will simply throw fruit snacks at them.

shizuru falls into the cottagecore aesthetic but completely incidentally. he loves cropped tank tops, almost always with an obscure phrase or picture on them, which he pairs with worn out jeans and his coat.

his coat was passed down to him by his father. it’s an incredibly worn leather coat with a sherpa (?) trim around the collar. he is incredibly attached to it, and both can and will fight for it. at some point, he will start wearing it with his school uniform.

he very strongly debates decking tamaki after the vase debacle, but just as quickly decides that it would be too much of a drag.

his design was made out of scrapped parts from my first our life: now and forever oc, lyra reagent. however, his blue hair is much darker, and he does not have heterochromia. they are both primary color themed though.

sometimes, he’ll pretend to be shy to get out of social situations. mostly with older women that fawn over him.

if someone claims that he’s worse than them at something he’s genuinely affectionate about, he has an entire personality switch, and suddenly seems like a delinquent.

he was originally just nicknamed wolf and was going to be used as a haikyuu oc. because of this, one of his favorite hobbies is volleyball, and he gets quite intense about it. he’s religious about practicing at least once a week.

he doesn’t mind the idea of being a househusband when he grows up, if he finds someone interesting while at ouran.

shizuru becomes fast friends with nekozawa and kasanoda.

kasanoda first meets him after walking in on haruhi. shizuru tries to fight him for their honor, and gets mistaken for a part of the yakuza by kasanoda.

honey views him as a younger brother.

for some reason, children love him, but he absolutely hates them. he babysits anyways, just to prove that he can do it well.

he got bad grades for his first couple years of middle school, basically up until he moved out, because he was working so many odd jobs to save up to start testosterone. he pretends it doesn’t bother him, not having any outside financial support, but it really upsets him privately.

the zuka club mistakes him for a girl and get taught a very swift lesson about gender and assuming. they’re the ones to leave first, as they don’t know how to react to shizuru.

his favorite animals are goats. he respects how hardcore they are while still looking cute. he respects honey for a similar reason.

despite his insomnia, he’s never had caffeine. no one is quite sure how he keeps his dark circles at bay. (pssst. it’s skincare. a LOT of skincare. and concealer on his bad days)

he can cry on command, a talent he learned after a brief obsession on acting. he uses this to prank tamaki frequently.

he doesn’t usually participate, but he thinks that the twins shenanigans are hilarious. if they’re doing something particularly amusing, he’ll find a way to weasel himself into their plan without even them knowing.

he tells everyone that the ends of his hair are his natural color because it ‘always fades out faster there’, but the truth is he likes having it to visually tie himself closer to his family. particularly haruhi and his late father.

shizuru understands memes, but doesn’t really get much else on the internet. he mostly uses google search for current memes, but avoids social media. if asked why, he’ll say it’s to keep away from drama, but the real answer is he just can’t figure out how it works.
