"And? What did you decide on?" Duke asks, fork slipping from his mouth and chewing, focused on Danny.
The boy in question hums. "Oh yeah, I'm totally joining in on the nightlife."
The statement has all of them stopping in their tracks, blatantly staring at the still eating boy.
"This will be my emo arc, daylight vigilante turned dark."
Tim snorts, Jason gives a smirk, nudging the eldest sibling next to him from his frozen state.
"Ooooh," Steph leans forward. "Have you decided? Bat or Bird?"
"New name?" Cass jumps in on the questioning with a small smile, eyes crinkling.
"Will you be joining us tonight then, danyal?" His twin speaks up for the first time during dinner, eyes narrowed and calculating.
"Yes." Is the short reply, with the way damian's lips turn down and displeasure makes itself clear, the intention of giving such a short answer has been met.
"Danny," Bruce gains the attention, leaning forward with his fingers interlocked and brows furrowed with what must be worry.
"Are you sure? I don't want you to feel pressured into this just because everyone else is—"
"I'm more than sure, B!"
The man sighs. "And I won't be able to stop you?"
"Mhm." He gives a nod.
"Okay," his shoulders sag in defeat. "Do you have everything then—?"
"Yep!"
"Even—"
"B, I'm pretty sure I got everything, you can, if in your opinion I am missing something, give it to me later!"
Danny grins, pushing himself up from the table and rounding around towards the door.
"Besides! My whole get up will be a suprise!! So stay awake folks because I'm gonna blow ya all away."
As he leaves, Steph and Duke make sounds of anticipation, curiosity eating at all of them.
(They dont know whats gonna hit 'em.)
"I'm betting 50 bucks that he's gonna be a bat."
Alfred shakes his head at the newfound excitement.
What an exciting night.
There is still no sight of their newest, despite oracle's teasing, having apparently already been included in the suprise.
"Well well well," a sly, yet teasing voice makes itself into the open. Catwoman, in all her glory, walks up to the group of bats and birds.
"If it isn't the bat, what's with the gloomy face?"
Batman gives her a nod. "Cat."
Her eyes roam the group and she tilts her head. "Everyone seems to be here tonight." She comments.
"We're waiting," the man shares. "Our newest decided to be more secretive about his debut."
Catwoman gives him a smug smirk. "So I have heard," a chuckle. "I've come here to introduce you to someone, truthfully."
"Oh? Who is it?" Nightwing perks up, having finally decided to join in.
"Me."
Some yelp, whip their head around and away from the lady in black, gasps and cooing (particularly from steph) fill the roof and Danny joins them.
He wears black combat boots, they're heavy just from the look, but make no sound as he jumps around. The front of the boots look like cat paws, they're reaching up to his knees.
Then comes the baggy black pants, knees protected by poleyn and his belt acting as a cats tail. The hoodie he is wearing is also black, with fingerless gloves (only the middle finger is covered) and reaching up to his neck.
Instead of a domino mask, he wears a hood with cat ears and a dark face mask. Cass claps, knowing fully well he took inspiration from her own get up.
The whole outfit is detailed with orange spots, some parts brown and others grayish.
"Meet my new mentee, Calico."
Danny, Calico, waves.

ej's adventures in romance: the good, the bad, the ugly
i've had kindle unlimited for the few months, and have been on a deep deep dive into all the recs from the romance genre that i can get my grubby little paws on. I've read.... many, many books. so many.
I've made a rec list of my new fave authors in the genre before, and this is not that. I'm just gonna list what I've read, by tropes, with ratings, and you can read my full reviews on goodreads. I've gone there. there are quite a few of the booktok hits here, because they came up on rec lists, and I'm gonna give my honest opinions on them okay. my goodreads!
Before we get down and dirty, have my actual recs from the last month: Heather Guerre remains a diamond in the rough, although she can now be joined by a further two authors: Kathyrn Moon (smutty RH queen) and Zoey Draven, a surprise last minute entry that doesn't shy away from darker themes, but handles them maturely.
other recs are the obvious: Talia Hibbert, Katee Roberts, and our very own @dominimoonbeam (whose book Doors I've been reccing a LOT lately, as I love it so much, and the sequel will be out soon >:3)
Okay. lets do this. this gets long, be warned. >:3
the "grovel" trope
books where the MMC fucks up and tries to make up for their mistakes. a good read where you get a healthy dose of angst and then a lot of making up for it. can be a great cathartic read.
Cate C. Wells has a whole series dedicated to this, "the five packs", one of which I already recommended as a guilty pleasure: the lone wolf's rejected mate". Now look, these books are ridiculous, the worldstate is terrible, each pack is a dude fest that reeks of misogyny, but they're pretty fun. I've read book 1 and book 3. I want to stab the MMC of book 1 with a rusty spork. you can skip it.
the lone wolf's rejected mate however is a ride, with a broken MMC who rejects his soulmate because he thinks he's too broken (literally, his wolf tries to kill her), and then they get captured, save each other, and he builds her a treehouse, yada yada. mind the content warnings, but if you want to read something OTT that basically epitomises the craziness that is the PNR and "grovel" romance genre, read this, and hold onto your butts.
the paranormal romance genre: shifters, vampires and more
Heather Guerre's books. okay, so actual recs. She focuses on characters from working class backgrounds with a sprinkle of the paranormal thrown in, everyone is over the age of 25 (thank god, most are in their 30s), and she can really write. I won't tag Eeshley again, but the "Tooth and Claw" series was their rec and *chefs kiss*. this is still the self-published romance genre, so these books could use an editor/polish, but honestly, I'm a big fan of her writing, and have picked up all her books. (her contemporary romance is also excellent.)
post-apocalyptic trope
Claire Kent's books. Imagine Joel from the last of us as a book series. I've only read Last Light so far, which is the prequel to a longer series that explores life in america 5+ years after an asteroid collides with western europe, causing global environmental catastrophes. I'm not 100% sold on her world building, but this is a romance novel, and the way she writes the characters and their relationships are human and organic, and the most realistic I've come across so far. the world state is the walking dead, with evil biker gangs that rape and pillage. i'm assuming this is an american thing, but can't comment on what it'd be like in the UK considering we no longer exist, due to aforementioned asteroid collision. probably for the best.
omegaverse and reverse harem tropes
yeah, I thought omegaverse was just a fanfic thing too. it's not, and it is super prevalent in het romance. it was never really my thing in fanfic, and the fact it is not a shifter thing was very surprising to me, as knots/packs/heat/rut still exist, but it's just humans with animalistic traits. I kept on waiting for the motorcycle gang in 'baby and the late night howlers' to turn into wolves, and they never did.
So Kathryn Moon writes some delicious reverse harem books. I read the first of monsterfucker series 'a lady of rooksgrave manor' years ago, and liked it, although there wasn't enough plot for me to continue. she writes excellent smut. Seriously, just really, really good smut. BIG FAN. I've been making my way through her 'Sweetverse' series, which has more connections and actual relationships between the characters, and polymances, and I recommend starting with Lola + the millionaires, if you can handle a little omegaverse. mind the content warnings, this is a book about recovering from trauma, which happened in the first book (baby's book, although offscreen. Lola has a lot of flashbacks in italics.)
Otherwise, you can stick with the monsterfucker books! I bought her latest monster series off of regular kindle, instead of KU, and I'm really excited to read it hehehe
"mars need more women" and "fated mate" tropes
hehehe okay HERE WE GO. these books are all about women ending up on planets where due to some sort of cataclysmic event - disease, mostly - 80% of the female population of the planet has died. now as we're not here for angst, the arrival of these women are usually due to some other species abducting them, and they are then "rescued" or recovered after a crash on metaphorical mars, which needs a better sex ratio to ensure the survival of the species.
this trope is coupled with "fated mate" tropes, where basically the rescued/recovered women end up with a devoted alien husband, who yearns until he can win her over (we're all about consent here folks)
the ice planet barbarians series by ruby dixon. this is basically na'vi aliens that crashlanded on an ice planet 250 odd years ago, and have made it their home, living in tribal colonies. to survive in this planet's toxic atmosphere, they've taken in a native parasite called a 'khui' which helps their bodies adapt to the climate and atmosphere. the women in the books also receive the same parasite to survive (they're given the choice), and this is the basis of the "mate bonds" formed throughout the series.
now book 1 is a rocky start, and the weakest of the series. I nearly put it down because of the first 20 pages. you can skip the first 20 pages. it basically recounts the abduction of the women from their home planet, and mistreatment by their captors (tw for sexual assault of a side character, not explicit). the ship malfunctions, and the women "cargo" are dropped onto the ice planet, where they are found by the not-na'vi, who are called sa-khui, because of the parasite.
now the rest of the series is about adapting to life on an alien planet, understanding the culture of the sa-khui, and gaining a devoted alien hubby. look, I read four books in a week. they're fun, they're exciting, the smut is good, and it's an easy read. it's also written by an experienced and practiced author, as the topics are handled maturely, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and it has great representation.
(one of my favourite books in the series, book 7, is centred around Lilah, who was born deaf and had a cochlear implant that was surgically removed during the abduction. the book focuses on her struggling to adapt to life on the planet, aided by a sa-khui that rescues her and learns ASL to communicate, and it's an excellent read okay)
I'd say read book 1 (maybe skipping first 20 pages, or even to part 2) for context, read book 2 (my favourite of the series omg), and then pick and choose from there!! I've read 1,2,4,7, and I'm gonna end up coming back for more hehehe.
"choosing theo" is another in this genre, but it didn't quite vibe with me. it leans into the 'rescued human ends up on a planet that needs women for propagation', with a matriarchal society where the men go to husbandry school to learn how to please women, and all residents of the planet are required to participate in three month long marriages to try to find potential mates to propagate the species. the premise is a fun one, but the first book is not the strongest, and I didn't continue from there. (another rusty spork for the MMC...)
dothraki in space trope
we're at the end of my trope list! I liked the ice planet barbarian series a lot, and I'd kept on seeing the Horde Kings of Dakkar by Zoey Draven recommended, and they are good. (thank you woofs >:3) think dothraki from GoT in space; humans live in small, poorly maintained colonies on the Dakkar planet, where they aren't allowed to hunt or damage the earth. offenses are punishable by death. these books lean into the captive trope, and handle the issues of the worldstate and navigating cultural differences super well, with a heavy dose of consent and BAMF heroines that rise up to their situation and make a place for themselves in their new (objectively better) lives.
i'm on book two now, and I love the maturity in the characters and the writing (which I did not find in 'choosing theo'), and they're an excellent romp. fantastic rec, really glad I picked this up >:3
am I finally going to take a break from my reading binge now? I keep on saying I will, and then not doing that ahahahaha. my kindle library is still stuffed full, mainly with other books from my fave authors above, but also some nice space horror to round it off.
next on my list is gonna be either 'Haunt, Heart, Havoc', a horror romance that I've been meaning to read forever, or 'Dead silence', which is aliens meets titanic in space. >:3 if you read all of this, KUDOS TO YOU, have a lovely sunday ahahaha!

needy
pairing – harry styles x reader
warning – humiliation. exhibitionism. daddy kink. cockwarming. degradation. dumbification. hella lot cringe. crawling? 18 +
summary – you aren't needy, no. but that doesn't mean you will let go the opportunity of harry fucking you.
request – And one where Harry takes you to Italy to a Beautiful villa with an infinity Pool and get cought by paparazzi having sex there haha !
author's note – this is shitty and not proofread so I am so sorry !! also, sorry for the wait too . . .
Tumblr media
neediness.
it was the only thing that you were completely and utterly foreign. being a middle child, your needs weren't never really taken as needs. you didn't know what it felt to need something.
the first time when you needed something, was when you were a teenager and hadn't studied for your exam. you had fucking squealed when the results had come out and you had passed.
the second time was when you were going to confess your feelings for harry ; you just needed him to like you back. which, for the record, he did.
the third time was your art competition in school. the fourth was when you had revealed your kinks to harry. the fifth was when you got into a fight with your best friend. the sixth was when your favorite sneakers were on sale. the sixth was your fight with your mom. the seventh was when your boyfriend asked a homeless you to move in with him.
quite frankly, after that, you lost the count because after that, you needed him with you. on every day, every minute, every second, you just needed him with you.
Tumblr media
You walked towards the changing room, a towel in hand because 'baby, the towels are all dirty!' or so he had claimed.
He had taken you to a heavenly villa in Italy, for your second anniversary. and apart from the pizza store down the street, that sold cauliflowers in pizza, the whole vacation had been brilliant. till now.
you had been sitting in the living room, sipping your coffee in peace, while he was swimming in the backyard. suddenly and completely out of the blue, he had called for you to bring a clean towel.
so, being the good girl you were, you had abandoned your coffee and now here you were. you were snapped out of your thoughts, when you felt someone push you into the water.
and since you and harry were the only one in the mansion, you had take a wild guess.
you emerged from underwater, letting out a shriek dramatically. however, your not-so-intense-glaring session came to an end as he jumped into the water too, before swimming closer to you.
"I don't want the towel, baby, you know what I want?"
He wrapped his arms around you, making you drop the things in your hand.
kissing your lips softly and passionately, he let his tongue dominate your mouth. he moved a bit so one of his hands moved to caress your cheek as the other one slipped lower, until it was gripping your ass.
quite frankly, you did know what he wanted. it was hard to forget when he talked about it throughout the flight. however, you couldn't help but tease him so the next words that came out of your mouth were filled of playfullness.
"What, daddy?" A growl that could make everyone and anyone drip with arousal vibrated through his chest. He quickly walked you backwards to the edge, flipping you so that your back met his chest, once you guys were there.
"I wanna rearrange your guts and turn you into a stupid mess." He paused, the hand that was on your cheek, was now fisting your his shirt. "I wanna fuck you, make you cum again and again, until you are blabbering for me to stop. "
"You want that, don't you?"
You managed to nod shakily, feeling your heat become wet and this time, it wasn't because of the water . His finger ran up and down your pussy, finding it vulnerable and bare, just like he expected.
one of his stupid rules said that you weren't allowed to wear any panties when you two were alone and of course, as much as you acted like you hated it, the truth was that you loved it ; you loved allowing him to have easy access to your body.
"Fuck, kitten. been such a good girl, deserve a reward, don't you?"
your eyes met his darkened ones and almost as if on queue, a moan left your mouth, followed by another choked moan, as two of his fingers slid in your pussy, not giving you any time to adjust.
Harry leaned down, his hand leaving your ass to open your mouth for him. He collected his saliva, holding eye contact as he spat in your warm mouth.
the groan he had let out as some of it fell on your jaw, was intoxicated and you craved more.
The sight was addicting to him as much as it was to you. he couldn't help but add two more fingers, wanting you to really fall apart underneath him.
"Daddy!" You screamed, the pain from the stretch already fading to a barley there sting.
"Aw, I know, whore. It feels good, doesn't it?"
Your ears burned from his mocking tone, you could feel the blissful feeling, your pussy felt so good that it hurt and yet, you couldn't help but nod pathetically.
Harry sighed, mocking disappointment. "Use. Your. Words. Slut."
"Y-yes, d-daddy! feels so good, can I cum please?" you whined.
As if to punish you for breaking his rule, he begun rubbing your clit, knowing how much that drives you crazy. You moaned, your own hands moving to your hair. You felt your eyes close, only for them to snap back open a second later.
"Look at me when I am" Harry sped up his moments, collecting his spit again but this time he spat right on your face. "destroying your tiny fucking pussy, you cum rag. fucking cum now."
reaching your high quickly, you let out the loudest moan of his name. he slapped your pussy, making you realise your mistake. panting, you were still in your post orgasm phase when
your gaze moved to his cock, his boxers felt like they couldn't burst anytime and you felt proud. your smugness was short lived though because he quickly took his fingers out of you.
He gave you a quick wink before slipping the soaked fingers in his mouth back and forth, he groaned, making you suddenly aware of the wetness between thighs.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, cockslut?" Fucking shit, your pussy throbbed at that.
"C-can I ride you please?"
you peered up at him through your eyelashes, hoping to appear innocent—it was all for nothing though, when he just landed another slap on your pussy.
still not saying anything, harry let go of you and walked out of the pool. your green eyed lover looked at you once again before slipping in the sun lounger by the pool.
Harry relaxed back in the chair before beckoning you forward with a finger and you, ever the good girl, go with it. you ignored the confusion and frustration in your mind as you climbed out of the pool.
As soon as you took a step forward, a tsk came from harry. "crawl for me like the good little slut, you are and can be."
you stared at him—it wasn't like you weren't comfortable, you and harry had discussed the limits months ago but what surprised you, was how much you wanted it.
you were broken out of your thoughts when he sighed mockingly. "I said crawl for me or is that too much to understand for your stupid little baby mind?"
you whimpered, dropping to your hands and knees. keeping your head up to maintain eye contact with harry, you crawled over.
once you were there, he was quick to manhandle you on his lap. his hands moved to your neck, where they caressed your collarbones. Harry's mouth replaced his hands soon, sucking hickies in your neck.
"good girl, maybe your not just a set of holes for me to use, after all." he spoke against your skin, making you shiver at his words.
"d-daddy, wanna make you feel good." you moaned, just wanting to please him like he pleased you.
"oh yeah?" he spoke and you could feel him smirk in your neck. "there's my good little cockslut, always so fucking eager to please her daddy. go on, baby, use your hand, since there's no way in hell I am going to grace that little throat with my cock."
nodding pathetically, you quickly lifted yourself up and lowered his boxers, just enough to take out his cock. one of your hands grabbed his cock, while the other swiped over the angry red tip.
your eyes moved to find his, only now taking in the fact that he had lifted his head from your neck. he hissed quietly, making you smile proudly.
your hand that was around his cock, fastened his pace and so did the one that was playing with his cock head. "I am your good girl, your good slut, right, daddy?"
"my best slut, so good to me." he regretted his words when he saw your proud smile change into a cocky one. "but that doesn't change the fact you are a slut, yeah?"
you nodded, letting out another whimper. wanting to make him feel good, you gave attention to his balls and his cock head more. he twitched, indicating that he was close.
and then, suddenly, he took your hand away.
"Gotta save daddy's precious cum for your little tummy, hm baby?" Harry whispered, squeezing your hand before his demeanor changed back to dominance.
"y'wanna have Daddys cum in your tummy?" he began, noting the eager glint in your eyes as you nodded way too fast. "Then earn for it. use your dumb little baby mind to make me cum and I would consider letting you cum again. Ride me."
a broken moan vibrated from your chest, only making him more amused. your lifted yourself before lowering down on his cock slowly.
you placed your hands on his shoulders for support, once you had taken half of him. you begun bouncing on his cock, trying to create a rhythm.
a scream of his name left your mouth, your body finally getting what it wanted. you looked up at him, only to whine at the sight— harry was relaxed back, his hands beside his head and he looked completely disinterested.
"does that feel good, daddy?" you asked, knowing that he had make fun of you—after all, that was what you needed.
"does that feel good, daddy?" he mocked, his lips set into a subtle smirk, even though you knew he was going soft inside. "look at my good cumdump, so eager for her daddy's pleasure."
you whined, bouncing harder on him, going completely in the rhythm you had set. you leaned to kiss him, sighing. after not even two seconds in the kiss, he bit your lip roughly, demanding entrance.
your passionate kiss went on for ten more seconds—seconds that consisted his tongue dominating your mouth and playing with yours—before he pulled away, with your bottom lip in his mouth.
harry leaned back a bit before letting go of it and watching it snap back into your place.
you smirked at the action, fastening your pace. however, it wasn't fast enough for your lover because the next thing you knew, he had thursted up into you, breaking youd rhythm and smirking harder at the broken moan you let out.
he went still again, making you do all the work. sighing lazily, harry moved to rub your clit, making your release come faster and so you bounced harder on him, tightening your pussy every once in a while.
he groaned, making a proud smile appear on your lips.
"d-daddy, can I cum?"
"hold it, yeah?"
before you could reply, he smashed his lips against yours. he rubbed faster at your clit, making you let out a small gasp. he took the opportunity as his tongue entered your mouth.
his tongue played with yours instantly, making you moan against his mouth. his tongue pushed yours back down before exploring your mouth.
harry pulled back, uttering a single growl of "my good girl" before diving in for another long passionate kiss.
feeling his dick hit your g-spot, you moaned loudly. he pulled back again, this time to breathe. he watched with darkened eyes as you threw your head back and screamed his name.
"cum with daddy, baby. let go, yeah? wanna soak daddy with your juices?"
as soon as his permission reached your ears, the coil in your stomach tightened before breaking completely. you screamed his name again, letting out a few curses.
he followed soon after, filling your pussy fully with groans and growls of your name.
you relaxed against his chest, both of you relaxing for ten or so minutes before he carried you back inside, his now softening cock still buried in you.
he laid the both of you on the bed, smiling when you started playing with his hair. Harry nuzzled your neck, laying soft kisses on your neck, smirking whenever he came across an hickey.
Tumblr media
the sheets around you were soft and like dreams. however, the man that was covering you with his arms now, was softer.
you stared at him, admiring his beauty and even though it sounded a little creepy, you didn't care. who wouldn't admire this God of a man.
you cuddled against his bare chest even more. you guys had slept while you were cockwarming him—actually, he had carried you around yesterday, since your legs had felt like jelly. you wouldn't have it any other way though.
you closed your eyes, almost falling back asleep when the sound of your phone buzzing snapped your eyes spoken. Harry groaned, tightening his arms around you.
you patted his hair softly, watching as the tension left his body and his eyes softly opened. you gave him your signature smirk, he shook his head, burrying it in your hair afterwards.
his hand gave a small squeeze to your ass, though his hand moved back to your waist, when you shot him a glare.
the cute moment was interrupted by your fucking phone buzzing. he groaned again, nuzzling his head in your hair even more.
you pulled back to blindly grab your phone from the bedside table, smiling at the one direction lockscreen before quickly typing in his name for password.
you looked over your notifications, your disinterest quickly changing into dread as you came across one particular twitter notification.
"no, nope, this can't be happening." you muttered, clicking onto the notification.
Harry furrowed his brows at that, sitting up with you in his arms quickly and accidentally thrusting up in you. "Is it a other hate comment, angel? I told those assholes to not bother my baby but no-"
"shut up, h." you smacked his chest as he raised one eyebrow. "Sarah just messaged me and our photos got leaked. it's breaking the internet."
"what?" he took your phone and sure enough, there were four blurred paparazzi photos of you two from yesterday.
the first one was of him kissing you in the water, the second was of him spitting in your mouth, the next was of him sucking his fingers and winking at you, the fourth was of you crawling for him.
"baby, these are all blurred. the ones with me spitting and you crawling for daddy are even more blurred. management is probably going to do something so don't worry, yeah?"
he wasn't wrong though — you thought, nodding at him. now that you were reassured, maybe you didn't need the earth to swallow you now.
you smiled a little before he leaned forward to whisper in your ear.
"besides, the world and your little friends now know about how you are a filthy slut for daddy, yea– OW, I AM SORRY!"

Kaminoan: Phonetic Inventory and Counting System
While discussing clone things with @daitoshi, they offhandedly mentioned the weirdness of the number of clones in a batch (and incidentally the general structure of the GAR). Apparently this was all the inspiration I needed to decide I was going to create base-4 counting system for the Kaminoans. 32 clones per batch seems pretty random, but it is just 2 x 16 (2 x 4^2), so in a base-4 system, it’s no more random than say 200 (2 x 10^2) is in base-10. Base-4 also ties in thematically with DNA irl, so that’s fun for a bunch of cloners!
I’ve put together a guide to my process and rules for the enjoyment of all. And by enjoyment, I mean frustration because this counting systems it incredibly upsetting.
We normally assume most human counting systems are base-10 due to our (standard) number of fingers. How the heck to do count to four with three fingers, then?? Well, this is how Imma say the Kaminoans count on their fingers:
Tumblr media
Does it make sense? I guess. Does it seem probable? Not really. But the joy of conlanging and worldbuilding for aliens is you can always just be like, “Whatever, their alien brains are built differently.”
Anyways, we’re gonna want some names for these numbers, so we gotta come up with some mouth sounds to represent them.
We do not have a lot of canon (or legends) words for Kaminoan stuff, and what we do have is of course plagued by the same issue that every collection of made up words in SW suffers from: absolutely no internal consistency. Okay, well maybe there is some internal consistency, so let’s look at what we got:
PEOPLE
Taun We Lama Su Kina Ha Ko Sai Nala Se Erla Halle Burtoni
PLACES
Tipoca Timira Derem Baran Wu Su Des Slici Tal An Glascretia Razoral
STUFF
aiwha nahra
AIWHA POD STORY
Protas Melkorr Kikla Thalina iiaa oii sso uded
DAITOSHI
Sre Len
Taun We, Lama Su, Nala Se: these are iconic of the vibe I want the phonetic system to embody. So, what features from this data set should I keep for the phonetic inventory?
I dismiss Glascretia and Razoral outright since they have a very “fake English vibe.” Same with Protas and Melkorr, since they just seem to be plays on Proteas (Greek myth) and Melkor (Tolkien) respectively. Also, I throw Halle Burtoni right out the window because every other Kaminoan we meet sounds like their name came from the same language. What the heck happened here?? Whatever language she’s named in, it’s not the one I’m building.
Get rid of thalina, too; I don’t like the <th> just because. Additionally, I’m not sure what the <h> in nahra represents (is it silent? pronounced? part of a digraph with <r>????), so we’re gonna ignore it for now. Finally, the terminal <d> in uded doesn’t fit the vibe I want to go for. I consider keeping the terminal <s> in Su Des but eventually decide against it.
From Tal An and Erla, I decide that approximants can occur finally.
I take <c> and <k> to represent the same phoneme.
For absolutely no good reason, I have always assumed the <wh> in aiwha was inspired by Maori, so I’ll count that as one phoneme. However, I decide to have all approximants have a voiced and voiceless form. So, I end up not using the Maori rendering anyways.
Great, overall we’ve got what looks like it could be a very CV syllable structure. In order to match the vibe I’m going for, I won’t complicate that too much.
We have several C<l> consonant clusters, so we’ll say that it can occur initially. And since we said all approximants can occur finally, we’ll just say all approximants can occur in this position, too. Plus, since I’m mostly just doing this project to amuse Daitoshi, this also allows for their OC’s name to be permissible in the system.
Now, what is going on with these words from the Aiwha Pod short story?? Suddenly double letters. Okay. We’ll say <a> and <i> have long forms, and then we’ll say <u> does as well for a more balanced system. Same with <s> and then <h>, again for balance. Do these words represent diphthongs? Meh. I’ll say no, they’re bisyllabic because I want them to be.
After all that, we’re left with :
m /m/ n /n/
p /p/ b /b/ t /t/ d /d/ k/c /k/
s /s/ ss /sː/ h /h/ hh /hː/
lh /l̥/ l /l/ rh /ɻ̊/ r /ɻ/ wh /ʍ/ w /w/
i /i/ ii /iː/ u /u/ uu /uː/ e /e/ o /o/ a /ä/ aa /äː/
ai /äɪ̯/ au /äʊ̯/
(C1)(C2)V(C3)
C1 = -approximant if occuring in cluster
C2 = +voiced approximant
C3 = +nasal or +voiced approximant
Yay! Let’s work on naming some numbers now.
We’ll obviously want unique names for 0-4. Additionally, the number 9 is very significant in the GAR; squads consist of nine troopers, so every other division ends up divisible by nine. Cool, let’s give 9 a unique name and let it play a role in counting. I also give 36 and 144 unique names, thinking of things like “dozen” and “gross” and “score” in English. Aside from these, we’ll want the various powers of 4 to be something simple.
Futz around with the phonemic inventory, maybe drop it into a word generator, and here are the unique number name around which all other numbers will be based:
Tumblr media
And there you have it! The basics, at least. I’ve worked out the names of number 0-64 with which, as long as you know the powers of four, you can work out any number you’d like up to 206 billion~!
Additionally, I decided to create a numeral system (I mean, it’s only four characters, so why the heck not?) very loosely inspired by the structure of the DNA nucelobases (adenine, guanine, thymine cytosine), so here’s that:
Tumblr media
And here is a list of the names of all of the numbers through 64! The general rule is simply that if the smaller integer appears first, it is multiplied by the following. If the larger integer appears first, it is added to the following. Aside from a few of the earlier numbers, it’s pretty regular! 9 lends its name to its multiples, and of course 36 (and 144) have unique names, as mentioned above. After hitting 64, the numbers repeat (the same way that they do in English after 100).
Tumblr media
*both rai hhel and kwado lho are used, though the latter is rarer
Aaaand for examples in this system, I thought I’d convert some clone designations into it :3
Rex 7567 → 1312033
each digit: lho hhel lho kwa abo hhel hhel
full number: rai hhelto lho whenau kwaiil hhelte hhel
abbreviated: tehhel tekwa abo hhelte hhel
wooooow you can immediately see why they wouldn’t go with base-4 designations haha
Fives 5555 → 1112303
each digit: lho lho lho kwa hhel abo hhel
full number: rai te lho whenau kwaiil hhelrai hhel
abbreviated: telho tekwa hhel abo hhel
maybe we will just call him “Telhon” in Kaminoan :)
Cody 2224 → 202300
each digit: kwa abo kwa hhel abo abo
full number: kwate whenau kwaiil hhelrai
abbreviated: kwate dokwa abo abo (or perhaps “abora” for “double zero”)
I accidentally made his name start with “Kwate” which sounds enough like his nickname I suppose :)
And that’s it! If you read this far, um, thanks (unless you’re Daitoshi: curse you for inspiring me to create this). idk why you would, but anyone is welcome to use this for whatever purpose. Would love to see what you come up with if you do, though, so hmu~! ;)

man the more i think about it the more it only makes sense for the end events of rh to happen only a little bit before the black trailer events.
a) ruby and yang, kingdom of vale natives who canonically have a tv that gets news from the capital city in their home, do not react to roman torchwick in the same way that most other people we see do. yang barely takes notice of him at junior's club (which happens only a little before the series we can assume) and while ruby attacks him she doesn't show much if any fear. either they just dont know who he is (signifying he's fairly new to his kingpin status) or they're just...really fucking stupid. which doesnt make sense.
b) they have NEVER seen neo before their fight in v2. yes this technically has an out of universe explanation (she was apparently added in a few days before production ended but that makes very little sense since theyd have to rework whole entire scenes and record new lines super late into the game), but yang refers to her as a "new henchman"
c) in all of blake's researching torchwick and the white fang in vale in v2, she also never comes across anything about neo. once again this has out of universe explanations but writers NEED to go back and make sure they aren't going against the canon they have already laid out unless it's for an intentional retcon
d) mercury says "my father always said, "if you want to learn a city, ask the rats"", followed by torchwick saying "hello gorgeous" (v3c7). roman, we can assume, is not the kingpin yet since cinder considered him one of the "rats".
e) there was no white fang activity in the capital city of vale until AFTER blake left because then adam took cinder's offer to join her cause (and work with torchwick). this could have been because adam wasn't allowed by sienna to go into the city of vale, he simply had no interest because its easier to rob train shipments when you can disappear into the trees than living in the city, or he just. didn't care about vale proper yet.
anything else goes against the canon "pre-show" events we were shown in the trailers and the flashbacks in v3, literally rendering the book non-canon. like i said writers literally HAVE to and NEED to go back and check what they have presented before BEFORE giving "pre canon events" stories, otherwise youve literally just fucked yourself when people look deeper than what is being presented.

Home Automation for cheap, warm & damp free rental property.
I live in New Zealand, where most rental properties are poorly designed and constructed, resulting in homes that are damp, and expensive to heat during the colder months.
I am not looking to have a flame war about dampness and construction practices or even about owners or property managers obligations or the poor advice that national agency’s provide such as opening your windows to reduce dampness, yeah right!
I am simply looking at what I can do as a renter to assist with the health of my family; keeping them safe, healthy and warm are fundamental to me. With this objective in mind let’s get on with this post.
Over the last two winters I have actioned what I am recommending in this post  and our resident asthma sufferer is grateful for these measures as they have had zero attacks at home during this time (which is amazing). We do not see ‘crying windows’ anymore. I have also seen power savings over the winter months as a result of the changes presented here.
Getting Started
So two years ago with mounting energy costs and health issues causing costly doctor trips and medical bills I started to consider what I can do to create a warm damp free environment for my family.
I noticed a few things:
We never had these issue when we lived in Sweden, or Switzerland which are cold and damp environments.
Humans are terrible at remembering to do things regularly on their own.
I could not hope to persuade the owners to stop dampness at its source.
Electric heaters and heat-pumps were good, gas and wood burners were bad.
I came up with a plan for living areas and a different one for bedrooms. I used one particular draught to suit my needs.
Prerequisites
To set up your environment you will need the following:
Always on internet accessed through WIFI
Android or IOS mobile device
Free mobile app for setting up Sonoff modules (ewelink)
An electric heater
A simple dehumidifier
2 Sonoff TH modules with sensor
2 Extension leads (2m ones are great)
Hopefully its only the Sonoff stuff and the power extensions in the last bullet point you will need to purchase making this really cheap for you.
DRAUGHT
As a rule I used standard draught exclusion techniques to prevent doors and windows passing through gales and allowing rain to come in. As a general rule I also keep doors to rooms that open to outside areas and damp areas such as bathrooms, showers, and toilets closed; particularly when trying to reduce the humidity and get the home warm. There is one draught that I had no chance to stop as it starts in the glassed conservatory and blows down two corridors and across an office, reaching the living room. Rather than stop this draught I chose to warm the air up and use it like a warm air ventilation stream, so even though we rarely go into the games room (what we call the conservatory) it has a heater in there to make sure the draught is spreading warm air throughout the house instead of cold.
When the house becomes dryer and warmer, I open bathroom doors, etc. so that they also slowly raise their temperature so going to the bathroom is not a major undertaking.
BEDROOMS
Each occupied bedroom has its own convection heater, as we found the oil filled heaters had annoying ‘ticking’ sound when cooling down that disturbed our sleep. The heaters have three settings 1 and a 2, and with both switched on making three options, I typically use the ‘2’ setting as this allows for a good consistent rise and fall of the heat and makes the room temperature more consistent with a balanced fast warm up when needed.
Tumblr media
Each bedroom also has a dehumidifier, these are small compact (read “cheap”) and we get them for $150 NZD from Countdown. Make sure to get a dumb/simple dehumidifier that has a simple on/off switch only. This should have no preset humidity thresholds or electronic settings. You should be able to simply plug them in switch them on at the wall socket and they start their work, fancy ones with multiple functions that need a human to set them up every time they are powered up will not work for what we are trying to achieve.
I recommend that the bedrooms of asthma sufferers get set up first, then the other bedrooms, and finally the living areas as money allows. The dehumidifiers work in tandem with the heaters to dry the air which makes the air easier to heat, meaning the heaters barely need to come on to heat the room. the temperature rises as the humidity decreases. The dehumidifier is therefore the most important part as it both raises the temperature and is 400% cheaper to run than a heater for the same period. After much research and trail & error we have settled on the bedroom humidity and temperatures for sleeping as follows:
Sleep Humidity: 72 RH
Sleep Temp:  17.4 C
Awake Humidity: 55 RH
Awake Temp: 21.0 C
The awake temperature is only increased for bedrooms that are used often during the day such as kids rooms.
Now, to measure and control the humidity and temperature I use two Sonoff devices that can controlled using an android or iOS mobile app.
Tumblr media
These Sonoff TH 10 (or TH 16) modules can be purchased cheaply from aliexpress, wish, banggood or ebay or direct from the manufacturer (http://www.itead.com). I recommend that initially you should get the 2 TH modules one for the dehumidifier and one for the heater. also get a sensor for each that plugs in the side.
Tumblr media
The external sensor provides the temperature & humidity measurements (that’s what the ‘TH’ stands for) and can be set to trigger the unit to turn ON and OFF. Only one sensor is needed per room, as the Sonoffs use a scene based rule set that allows multiple scenes to be defined based on the temperature and humidity measurements. So, one sensor can be used to control many devices. For example a heater, dehumidifier, fan, air conditioner, etc...
Tumblr media
I have found it very useful to use a power extension lead cut in half as the input and output for the Sonoff module. That way you can connect anything you want and enable power remotely, if you want it be fixed install then simply cut the plug off the device about 30 centimeters or a 12 inches from the end and bare the ends of the wires to connect them to the Sonoff modules using the Live, Neutral and Ground (Earth) connects.
Tumblr media
Make sure to check the connection labels as the order may be subject to change.
Tumblr media
WARNING
If you are not comfortable wiring plugs then do not attempt this yourself! ask a competent friend to do this for you instead.
Make sure the heater and the dehumidifier are in the ON position and then plug in the Sonoff to the mains power, now you should be able to remotely turn the devices ON and OFF locally using the button on the module.
Using the ewelink mobile application installed on your phone or tablet, setup the devices to turn on when the temperature or humidity is lower than desired and off when the target is reached. Then plug it all together and see it function automatically. By letting measurements trigger the use of the devices you will quickly find that it actually saves you money as well improves your health. As we know, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
As many of you will have noticed the Sonoff unit can also be controlled using Amazon, Alexa and Google home.
Tumblr media
Next Time
In this post I focussed on the health aspects rather than pure cost savings; although I found I made savings even with this step as the consistency was key. The next post will look at the living areas and in-particular the living room where we have a heat pump and explain how we saved $150 NZD a month over winter on our power bills. Thats a whopping 25% off our bill every month!
Ciao
Paul

CONVALESCENT PLASMA THERAPY FOR COVID-19.
Case by case consent is being given for starting Plasma therapy for patients seriously affected with Covid-19.
What is Plasma Therapy?
Convalescent Plasma therapy involves the use of Plasma from a recovered patient of Covid-19. It is presumed that the patient who has recently recovered from the disease will carry the Antibodies to fight the disease. This Antibody rich plasma is then given to a patient suffering from a serious infection, who is probably in the ICU and maybe on the ventilator. Plasma is part of the whole blood without the cells. It is different from Serum.
Who is a Recipient?
A seriously ill patient suffering from Covid-19 is the recipient. The Antibody rich Plasma helps the person to fight the infection more strongly.
Who is a Donor?
A patient who has successfully beaten the infection and has got better recently is a likely Donor – usually about four weeks from recovery. Are some Tests done to see who can donate and receive this Plasma? Just like Blood donation, it is very important to ensure Compatibility.
Donor factors
- Must be healthy with good Haemoglobin levels - Test for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C must be negative - Blood Group and Rh compatibility must be done in ideal cases - Ideally, Antibody Titres should be done to judge for the effectiveness of the Plasma
Explain the whole process
In an ideal situation – a person has caught Covid-19 infection and has since recovered. He is asked if he would like to donate his plasma in case it is needed for serious patients. Once his consent is obtained he is kept on the list of potential donors.
About 28 days later he is called to donate Plasma – ideally, this should be done by a process called Apheresis where only the Plasma is extracted and the blood cells are returned to the patient. This has two advantages
- The patient does not feel the weakness/ fatigue which can sometimes happen after a whole blood transfusion - Since only Plasma is removed the person is potentially able to donate again in a short span of two weeks or so.
This Antibody rich Convalescent Plasma is then stored at an appropriate temperature – like blood in a blood bank.
A patient is deteriorating in the ICU. The treating team takes a decision or considers the use of Convalescent Plasma as a therapeutic option.
Permission is taken from Government agencies to give the therapy.
Once permission is granted the blood of the patient is matched with the Plasma to check for compatibility. If all is fine the therapy goes through and about 250 ml of the Plasma is given Intravenous.
How successful is this Treatment?
It is too soon to say. Initially permitted by the WHO for treatment of the Ebola Virus outbreak, this treatment is a part of therapeutic options for a very seriously ill patient.
Are there any side effects?
Though the risk is low there is always the possibility of some reaction to the Plasma which is being used. ===========================================================================================================

HVAC Basics: Choosing a Dealer http://bit.ly/2LrJXfn
Your local HVAC dealer can help you find the perfect system for your home. Image: Artazum/Shutterstock
When it’s time to replace or purchase a new HVAC system, how do you choose the right dealer for you? A new HVAC unit is not an everyday or impulse purchase. It’s important to do a little homework before you shop. Doing some research and asking the right questions is crucial to choosing the best HVAC dealer for your home.
(function(w,d,u,s) { var ifr=d.createElement('iframe');var itr=0;var inv; function doBuild(){ifr.style.border='none';ifr.style.outline='none';ifr.style.width='100%';ifr.style.height='600px'; ifr.src=u+'?p='+encodeURI(w.location.href);var ift=d.querySelector(s);ift.appendChild(ifr)} function rH(m){if(isNaN(parseInt(m.data.useHeight,10))){return} ifr.style.height=(m.data.useHeight+25)+'px'} w.addEventListener('message',rH,!1);inv=w.setInterval(function(){if(d.querySelector(s)&&itr<100){doBuild(); w.clearInterval(inv)}else if(itr > 100){w.clearInterval(inv)} itr++},200) }(window, document, '//www.trane.com/residential/en/iframe/form-secondary/', '#TRN-inject'));
Basics to know before choosing an HVAC dealer
Let’s start with some basic info before you start your dealer search. What we call HVAC is an acronym for “heating, ventilation, air conditioning.” If you choose a heat pump unit, all three elements are combined into one. Heat pumps are idea for homes that are limited to electrical power, but many homeowners choose them because of their convenience. However, they’re not suitable for all climates. HVAC can also represent a furnace and air conditioner in your home.
Choosing the right HVAC dealer can make the buying process easier — but how can you be sure you’re choosing the right one? Doing your research on your current HVAC, and on the dealers in your area will help you in your search.  Here’s are the first things you’ll need to do.
Having the right information about your heating and cooling needs makes shopping for a new HVAC unit easier. Image: Breadmaker/Shutterstock
This research can make you a savvy HVAC buyer
Repair or replace your HVAC? Ask prospective dealers if they have the capability to inspect your HVAC unit and determine if repairs might bring it back to top condition. You may still choose to replace the entire system, but it’s good to know if it’s really time for it to go.
Read dealer reviews on more than one site. All review sites are not the same when it comes to getting a balanced look at potential HVAC dealers. It’s a good idea to visit at least two sites that provide ratings and reviews, to get a balanced view of the dealer. Word of mouth from friends and neighbors is also helpful. But visiting at least one review site will let you see an overall view of that dealer’s quality of service.
Gather your maintenance and purchase records. It will be helpful to have your current HVAC unit’s records when you shop for a new system, so that your dealer can assess the age and condition of your current system. Furnaces can typically last 12-16 years with proper maintenance, and air conditioning units can last 10 to 16 years when maintained.
Get an energy audit of your home. A local HVAC dealer can provide an energy audit of your home, to ensure that the unit you choose is right for your home. Knowing and understanding your home’s heating and cooling energy needs can save you money. If you’d like to have an energy audit done before you shop for a dealer, most local utility companies offer a free energy audit. This will give you the energy calculations you’ll need when you shop for a unit.
Contact prospective HVAC dealers. Once you’ve done your research and are ready to choose an HVAC dealer, visiting their showroom or scheduling a home visit is your next step.

What questions should you ask an HVAC dealer?
Your local HVAC dealer can be a great source of information to help you choose the right system. Be ready to ask questions of the prospective dealers, so that you have all the information you’ll need to make a decision. Here are 5 questions you’ll want to ask.
1. Is it really time to replace my HVAC?
A new HVAC unit may not be necessary, when a repair can restore it to optimum condition. Once your HVAC reaches the end of its functional life, a repair may not be possible or cost-effective. A poorly maintained or outdated unit can be more expensive to run.
2. Am I looking at the right HVAC unit for my home?
It’s possible that the HVAC unit you’re replacing was not the perfect type for your home. Your climate, weatherproofing, and even your family size, can be a factor in choosing the  right unit. The right HVAC system for a home in the hot and humid South may not be the right choice for a climate zone in the frigid North.
3. What size HVAC unit do I really need?
Your HVAC dealer can use your energy audit, and other information about your home, to recommend the right size system. There are calculations that provide an accurate picture of your heating and cooling needs. Your dealer can explain the range of HVAC unit sizes, and why they can be too big or too small for efficient energy usage in your home.
4. Will my new HVAC system handle my home’s ventilation needs?
The “V” in HVAC is ventilation. Allergies, dampness, humidity, and more, can affect the fresh air ventilation in your home. Be sure to ask about air cleaning and ventilating features of the HVAC systems you’re considering.
5. Can I finance my purchase?
Many HVAC dealers offer financing, or partner with lenders to make this large purchase easier for you. It’s a good idea to ask about sales, promotions, and discounts you may qualify for as part of group memberships or your age group.
With your research done and your must-ask questions ready, it’s time to contact your local HVAC dealer who can help you choose the right HVAC system for your home.

Classical E&M V: Electric Multipoles
Over the last few weeks, we derived exact expressions for the charge densities, electric fields, and electric forces of generic charge configurations. These results are often as complicated as the charge configurations that generate them, which can obscure the larger physical principles at play by becoming computationally intensive and aesthetically gnarled. We can regain a conceptual hold on these quantities by examining systems in certain limits, such as when our sources and targets are well-separated.
Today, we look at the electric force a point charge $q^\prime$ at $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ (near the origin $\vec{0}$) exerts on a point charge $q$ at $\vec{r}$ when they are very far from each other. This naturally generates an expansion in $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}|/|\vec{r}|$:
We call this the electric multipole expansion of the electric force, and give each term a name:
This week we’ll derive the multipole expansion of a point charge, extend it to charge configurations, and explore the monopole term. Next week, we’ll delve into the dipole and quadrupole terms.
I. Significance Comparisons and the Name of the Game
The electric force which $q$ at $\vec{r}$ experiences due to $q^\prime$ at $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ is given by Coulomb’s law:
As mentioned in the intro, we’ll take $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ close to the origin $\vec{0}$ and choose $\vec{r}$ to be extremely far away in comparison.
To use technical language, we assume by construction that $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}|$ is significantly less than $|\vec{r}|$, which we write symbolically as,
We could equivalently say that $|\vec{r}|$ is significantly greater than $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}|$ and write,
We only use “$\ll$” and “$\gg$” to compare positive numbers. For what values does the statement $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}| \ll |\vec{r}|$ hold true? Well, it depends on how accurate we’re aiming to be in our calculation. If we can only measure distance to a single digit, then $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}| = 0.1$ is significantly less than $|\vec{r}| = 1$:
However, if we can measure two digits worth of accuracy, then $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}|=0.10$ is not significantly less than $|\vec{r}|=1.0$, because
Whether a number is significantly less than (or greater than) another number depends on the accuracy of the calculation at hand.
Assuming that $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}| \ll |\vec{r}|$, we may define their ratio as a small parameter that I’ll label $\epsilon$:
TODAY’S GOAL: write $\vec{F}_{q^\prime\rightarrow q}$ in terms of $\epsilon$, then expand $\vec{F}_{q^\prime\rightarrow q}$ as a sum of terms weighted by increasing powers of $\epsilon$. This is useful because the terms are organized by relative importance: the $\epsilon$ term contributes more to the total force than the $\epsilon^2$ term, which contributes more than the $\epsilon^3$ term, and so-on.
First, note that we may expand the denominator of Coulomb’s law like this:
By definition, the dot product between $\vec{r}$ and $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ is proportional to $\cos\theta$, where $\theta$ is the smallest angle between the vectors:
Hence, the denominator equals,
Meanwhile, the quantity in parentheses equals,
When we combine these elements, we obtain the following expression for the force:
which equals, when expressed in terms of $\epsilon$,
We’re going to power series expand this expression in terms of $\epsilon$ and generate the multipole expansion of the electric force in the process. In pursuit of this goal, let’s elaborate on how to handle power series.
II. Power Series, Approximations, and Big O Notation
A power series in $x$ is an infinite sum of increasing powers of $x$. All power series may be written in the following form:
Many functions we’ll deal with in physics have power series representations. For example, $\sin x$ (which outputs a ratio of right triangle side lengths) may be expressed as a power series in the real variable $x$ (aka, a certain right triangle angle), like so:
A function $f(x)$ that has a power series representation at every value of $x$ is called an analytic function. An analytic function might require multiple power series descriptions to accommodate all values of $x$.
Sometimes a function’s power series will be valid beyond the original domain of the function, allowing us to extend the function to a larger domain; this is called an analytic continuation. For example: $\sin x$ is initially defined only over real values of an angle $x$. However, the power series yields sensible results for complex values of $x$ too, and thereby allows us to analytically continue sine’s domain to $\mathbb{C}$.
We’ll worry about analytic continuations another day. For now, consider a generic power series expansion in real-valued $x$. If $|x|\ll 1$, then,
Oftentimes the coefficients $a_n$ in the power series either shrink or grow too slowly as $n\rightarrow \infty$ and cannot combat the decreasing values of $|x^n|$, so that the terms in the power series satisfy a similar chain of conditions:
This proves extremely useful for practical calculations. See, the $a_n$ provide infinitely many free parameters, allowing us to construct a cavalcade of extremely complicated functions. However, if $x$ is naturally small, then terms with larger powers of $x$ won’t contribute much to the final result, and we might be able to neglect all but a finite number of terms to good accuracy. This is called truncating the series. For example, maybe a function $f(x)$ is well-represented to first order in $x$, in which case we’d utilize the following approximation:
We’ve dropped the $a_2$ terms and higher to get a simpler function, but approximations are only as useful as the precision we need. The function $\sin x$ is often well-approximated by its first order approximation ($\sin x \approx x$), as evidenced by their similarity when plotted:
If first order isn't accurate enough, then we can go to second order in $x$:
In general, we say we’ve approximated $f(x)$ to $n$th order in $x$ if we keep terms up to $a_n$:
Constructing these approximations (approximately valid when $x$ is small) yields expressions that can be easier to work with than the full expressions (which are exactly valid everywhere), but cost us information as a result. For example, let’s compare $f_1(x) = x + x^2 + x^3$ and $f_2(x) = \sin x$.
Now, as the above plot makes clear, these functions are not equivalent.
However, these functions are indistinguishable to first order!
This is why the functions look so similar near $x=0$ in the plot: there simply isn’t enough information at first order to tell them apart. Their degeneracy is broken when we go to second order in $x$:
Whether or not the error from neglecting second order (and/or higher) terms matters to us is dependent on the details of the calculation at hand. We can precisely track our approximation errors via big O notation.
Big O notation provides a symbol $\mathcal{O}(x^n)$ that--when tacked onto an expression--says ``this expression is exact up to $(n-1)$th order in $x$”. We might use big O notation to express the equivalence of $f_1$ and $f_2$ up to $x^2$-sized errors:
whereas we could also use big O notation to demonstrate their subsequent nondegeneracy when the errors are reduced to about $x^3$ in size:
Conceptually, the big O symbol sweeps up all terms of the indicated order, giving a limit on how fast the approximation error grows with increasing $x$. That means, among other things,
Well, at least, this is typically the case, and works well for asymptotics--the study of functions as their arguments diverge (e.g. $x\rightarrow \pm \infty$). When we work with small values of $x$, this symbol possesses limitations closely related to the limitations of “$\ll$” and “$\gg$”. To be concrete, suppose we’re interested in $x\sim 0.01$. Then the quantity $100 x^n$ is actually an $(n-1)$th order term, because:
Then again, if we’re interested in $x\sim 0.001$, then it remains small enough to lump into $n$th order terms. Like most things in physics, big O notation requires a careful understanding of when we intend to use the approximation. When in doubt, plug in explicit values and see how numbers compare.
The electric monopole, dipole, and quadrupole terms of the multipole expansion correspond to the $1$, $\epsilon$, and $\epsilon^2$ terms in the power series expansion of $\vec{F}_{q^\prime\rightarrow q}(\epsilon)$. Now that we’re armed with some useful power series notation, let’s get to expanding!
III. Binomial Series and Expanding the Denominator
I’ll prove it in a later post, but for now I simply state the acclaimed binomial series, a power series expansion of $(1+x)^N$ in $x$:
This expression is true for all complex $x$ such that $|x| < 1$ and all complex $N$. (It’s true for other values of $x$ as well, but those require caveats to their validity and we don’t need them today.) To be explicit, the $n$th term of the binomial series is given by,
where the first term corresponds to $n=0$.
~Aside :: The Binomial Series~
I want to quickly mention three popular consequences of the binomial series.
1) Physicists often truncate the binomial series to first order in $x$, which yields the so-called binomial approximation,
This could be the most used approximation in all of physics.
2) Any time $N$ is a nonnegative integer, the binomial series naturally truncates itself and yields the binomial theorem. The first few examples (which you can verify through multiplication!) are,
You might recognize these coefficients as elements of Pascal’s Triangle--this is not a coincidence!
3) When $N=-1$ and we replace $x\rightarrow -x$, the binomial series becomes the so-called geometric series:
I’ve seen this series used a lot in both directions: sometimes we approximate quantities that look like the LHS by using a truncated version of the RHS, and other times we obtain a series that can be rewritten like the RHS and subsequently expressed succinctly via the LHS.
~End Aside~
We’ll use the binomial series to expand $\vec{F}_{q^\prime \rightarrow q}$’s denominator:
Comparing to $(1+x)^N$, we see that we should choose,
To what order in $x$ do we need to expand this denominator to get all of the second order $\epsilon$ terms in the force? Note that $x^n = (-2\epsilon \cos\theta + \epsilon^2)^n$ contains terms with $\epsilon^n$ through $\epsilon^{2n}$:
which we plan to subsequently multiply by $(\hat{r}-\epsilon\hat{r}^\prime)$ to get terms containing $\epsilon^n$ through $\epsilon^{2n+1}$:
Thus, to get all of the $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^2)$ terms of the force (as to obtain the monopole, dipole, and quadrupole terms), we need to expand to 2nd order in $x$, aka $n=2$. Higher order terms in $x$ will only yield contributions at third order and higher in $\epsilon$.
Now that we know how much we need to expand the denominator, let’s start working through the terms. Each term is coming directly from the definition of the binomial series.
The sum of these terms yields an approximation of the denominator that is good to 2nd order in $\epsilon$:
I swept all terms at $\epsilon^3$ and higher into $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^3)$ because we’re missing other terms at that order and higher anyway (from $n\geq 3$ terms) and therefore anticipate approximation errors of that size. We haven't been precise enough to worry about $\epsilon^3$ terms.
IV. Substituting the Approximation into the Force
Let’s combine last section’s final result with the other $\epsilon$-dependent term from $\vec{F}_{q^\prime\rightarrow q}$. I multiply the terms out and then reorganize them according to common powers of $\epsilon$:
Plugging this into the force, we obtain the multipole expansion of the electric force $\vec{F}_{q^\prime\rightarrow q}$ once and for all:
I’ve labeled electric monopole, dipole, and quadrupole terms above, which were the objects of our desire. Note we could’ve extended this expansion to higher orders of $\epsilon$ if we wanted. In doing so, we would have found an octopole term ($\epsilon^3$), hexadecapole term ($\epsilon^4$), 32-pole term ($\epsilon^5$), and so-on.
Because we’ll be working with these terms individually, let’s give them symbols. I’ll label each term by the order of $\epsilon$ that appears in it:
By dividing $\vec{F}_{q^\prime\rightarrow q}$ by $q$, we obtain the multipole expansion of the electric field $\vec{E}_{q^\prime}$, which has monopole, dipole, and quadrupole terms analogous to those of the electric force:
We know now how to multipole expand a shifted point charge, but what about more complicated charge configurations? Earlier in this series, we showed we can construct the electric field of any generic charge configuration by adding the electric fields of infinitesimal point charges, courtesy of the superposition principle of electrostatics. For example, we may write the electric field $\vec{E}_{\rho^\prime}$ due to a volume charge density $\rho^\prime$ on $V^\prime$ as,
where each infinitesimal contribution has charge $dq^\prime = \rho^\prime(\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime})\cdot d\tau^\prime$ and is located at some $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}\in V^\prime$. The multipole expansion of the electric force required we assume our source charge was near the origin. The multidimensional equivalent of this assumption is as follows: we assume we can fit all of $\rho^\prime$ (or whatever charge configuration we’re interested in) in an origin-centric sphere of radius $a^\prime$, where $a^\prime$ is small relative to our point of observation $\vec{r}$.
Each point charge $dq^\prime$ will have its own value of the small parameter $\epsilon(\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}) =|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}|/|\vec{r}|$, which makes for a lot of small parameters to juggle. Thankfully, by containing all of the $dq^\prime$ in a small sphere, we ensure every $|\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}| < a^\prime$, such that the (assumedly small) ratio $a^\prime/|\vec{r}|$ is larger than every $\epsilon(\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime})$. This guarantees every $dq^\prime$ can be usefully multipole expanded:
We can then volume integrate these contributions (we use linearity to distribute the integral over the sum), thereby obtaining the electric multipole expansion of a volume charge density:
This process can be extended to any charge configuration (well, that fits in an origin-centric sphere anyway), so that we may discuss the electric multipoles of a generic charge configuration. We generally expect the $n$th term $\vec{E}_{CC^\prime}^{(n)}$ to generate an $(a^\prime/|\vec{r}|)^n$-sized contribution.
To conclude this week, we discuss the electric monopole term. Next week, we’ll discuss the dipole and quadrupole terms.
V. The Electric Monopole Term
The monopole terms of $\vec{F}_{q^\prime\rightarrow q}$ and $\vec{E}_{q^\prime}$ are:
The monopole contribution of a point charge $q^\prime$ at $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ looks exactly like the point charge $q^\prime$, but shifted to the origin! From this, we immediately infer that the other terms in the multipole expansion must provide corrections that effectively shift the charge to $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$. Different choices of $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ will require shifting different amounts, and thereby require a different dipole term, quadrupole term, etc. Because the monopole term always sends $q^\prime$ to the origin and the higher multipoles have to correct that, the higher multipoles are typically sensitive to where we place our origin.
As an extreme example, we could move our origin next to $\vec{r}$, except then $\epsilon \sim 1$ and our expansion becomes impractical! Terms containing large powers of $\epsilon$ could remain important to the calculation (they have to shift $q^\prime$ a ridiculous distance after all) and we’d be unable to justify truncating the series. However, even in this absurd case, we’d end up with the exact same monopole term! The monopole term is origin-independent. This property is sometimes referred to as translation invariance.
Why is the electric monopole translation invariant? Consider what a generic charge configuration $CC^\prime$ looks like according to $q$ as $|\vec{r}|$ grows larger and larger:
Qualitatively, the entire charge configuration looks increasingly like a point charge at the origin! As $|\vec{r}|\rightarrow\infty$, the charge configuration becomes indistinguishable from a point charge. This is simultaneously the limit when $\epsilon\rightarrow 0$ and the monopole dominates all higher-order terms. This is why the monopole term cannot resolve the position of source charges.
Let’s quantify the case of multidimensional charge configurations. As mentioned in the last section, a volume charge distribution $\rho^\prime$ on $V^\prime$ has the following monopole term:
The only $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}$ dependence comes from $dq^\prime$, so we can pull everything else outside the volume integral:
We call the quantity in square brackets the net charge (or total charge) $Q_{net}^\prime$ of $\rho^\prime$.
Therefore, the monopole term of $\rho^\prime$ looks exactly like a point charge of magnitude $Q_{net}^\prime$ at the origin! This makes sense: the monopole term shifts all of the $dq^\prime$ point charges to the origin, which we can then combine into a single charge via the decomposition corollary.
The monopole term defines the net charge of generic charge configurations too. Given point charges $q^\prime_{i_0}$ at $\vec{r}^{\text{ }\prime}_{i_0}$, line charges $\lambda^\prime_{i_1}$ on curves $C^\prime_{i_1}$, surface charges $\sigma^\prime_{i_2}$ on surfaces $S^\prime_{i_2}$, and volume charges $\rho^\prime_{i_3}$ on volume charges $V^\prime_{i_3}$, their net charge is defined as,
and we can generically write the monopole term of $\vec{E}_{CC^\prime}(\vec{r})$ as,
Sometimes we get lucky and there’s exactly as much positive charge as negative charge in a configuration, and we end up with zero net charge. We call such configurations uncharged, net neutral, or simply neutral. As indicated in the latest formula, a neutral configuration has a vanishing monopole term.
It turns out that most bulk matter (e.g. rocks, houses, human beings, ...) falls into this category. Consequently, the monopole terms often vanish for macroscopic materials. Their electric behavior is commonly dominated by the dipole term instead. That's precisely where we’ll pick up next week!

The Real Reason Behind Growing Chrysanthemums | Growing Chrysanthemums
The Real Reason Behind Growing Chrysanthemums | Growing Chrysanthemums – Chrysanthemums were first grown in China for a flowering herb as far back as the 15th one hundred year BC.[11] Over 500 cultivars had been recorded simply by 1630.[9] By the year 2014 it was estimated there are now over 30, 000 cultivars on earth and about 7, 000 cultivars in Cina.[12] The flower is renowned as one of the 4 Gentlemen in Chinese and East Asian art. The plant is very significant during the Two times Ninth Festival.
Chrysanthemum cultivation began with Japan during the Nara and Heian intervals (early 8th in order to late 12th centuries), and gained recognition in the Edo period (early 17th in order to late 19th century). Many flower styles, colours, and versions were created. That this flowers were developed and shaped likewise developed, and chrysanthemum culture flourished. The particular Imperial Seal regarding Japan is a chrysanthemum and the institution on the monarchy is also referred to as Chrysanthemum Throne. A variety of festivals and shows take place throughout Okazaki, japan in autumn if the flowers bloom. Chrysanthemum Day (菊の節句 Kiku no Sekku) is just about the five ancient holy festivals. It is celebrated on the 9th time of the 9th 30 days. It was started in 910, when the imperial courtroom held its initial chrysanthemum show.
Chrysanthemums entered American horticulture in 1798 if Colonel John Dahon imported a discerning variety known as ‘Dark Purple’ from Great britain. The introduction ended up being part of an effort to cultivate attractions within Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Modern developed chrysanthemums are showier than their outdoors relatives. The floral heads occur in various forms, and can be daisy-like or decorative, such as pompons or control keys. This genus includes many hybrids in addition to thousands of cultivars developed for horticultural purposes. In addition to the traditional orange, other colors are available, such as white, blue, and red. The most crucial hybrid is Chrysanthemum × morifolium (syn. C. × grandiflorum), derived primarily from C. indicum, but in addition involving other variety.
Over 140 cultivars of chrysanthemum have got gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Prize of Garden Worthiness (confirmed 2017).[14]
Chrysanthemums are separated into two basic organizations, garden hardy and also exhibition. Garden healthy mums are fresh perennials capable of wintering in most northern latitudes. Exhibition varieties aren’t going to be usually as durable. Garden hardies are generally defined by all their ability to produce an extrodinary amount of small blooms having little if any mechanical aid, such as staking, and also withstanding wind along with rain. Exhibition versions, though, require staking, overwintering in a fairly dry, cool natural environment, and sometimes the addition of evening lights.
The convention varieties can be used to generate many amazing flower forms, such as huge disbudded blooms, aerosol forms, and many creatively trained forms, like thousand-bloom, standard (trees), fans, hanging bins, topiary, bonsai, and also cascades.
Chrysanthemum flowers are divided into thirteen different bloom forms by the US National Chrysanthemum Society, Inc., which is in keeping with often the international classification method. The bloom types are defined incidentally in which the ray along with disk florets are usually arranged. Chrysanthemum blossoms are composed of many personal flowers (florets), every one capable of producing a seeds. The disk florets are located in the center of the prosper head, and the kitchen tools florets are on the particular perimeter. The ray florets are considered not perfect flowers, as they just possess the female reproductive system organs, while the storage florets are considered best flowers, as they possess both male and feminine reproductive organs.
Unpredictable incurves are carefully bred to produce a giant mind called an ogiku. The disk florets usually are concealed in cellular levels of curving ray florets that dangle down to create a ‘skirt’. Regular incurves are similar, but usually along with smaller blooms and also a dense, globular type. Intermediate incurve plants may have broader florets and a less densely flowered head.
Within the reflex form, the disk florets are concealed and the ray florets reflex outwards to manufacture a mop-like appearance. The decorative form is similar to reflex blooms, though the ray florets tend not to radiate at greater than a 90° angle to the stem.
The borla form is totally double, of little size, and very globular in form. Single and semidouble flowers have exposed drive florets and one for you to seven rows of ray florets. In the anemone form, the disk florets are prominent, typically raised and overshadowing the ray florets. The spoon-form disc florets are obvious and the long, tubular ray florets usually are spatulate. In the crawl form, the disk florets are concealed, and also the ray florets are tube-like with hooked or barbed finishes, hanging loosely surrounding the stem. In the clean and thistle range, the disk florets might be visible.
In Okazaki , japan, a form of bonsai chrysanthemum was developed over the hundreds of years. The cultivated blossom has a lifespan around 5 years and is usually kept in miniscule size. Another technique is to use pieces of lifeless wood and the bloom grows over the again along the wood to give the illusion from the the front that the miniature woods blooms.
