Just saw the Dragon Age Veilguard trailer and I……..
It’s been ten years since Inquisition. Ten years of development on the game and changes in the studio and EA pushing for new game directions, lead artists and designers leaving the company. BioWare has been on thin ice for so long, so precariously balanced with their fans who are ready to abandon the entire company that keeps misinterpreting what people actually want. So then today we get this Veilguard trailer. What was that? I mean this literally, what IS this game going to be? We dropped the Dreadwolf name and swapped it for Veilguard. Changes the tone already. People are comparing the new vibes to Suicide Squad (which for dragon age lore and Wardens isn’t totally out of place, albeit a different mood), and comparing the departure from the story driven RPG to what happened with Arkane Studios and Redfall (i.e. publisher EA forcing story driven single player RPG company to make a multiplayer online live service shooter).
The trailer was dogshit. People are comparing it to Borderlands, Fortnite, mobile games, Suicide Squad. And all those comparisons are totally accurate. What is this game going to be? Ten years of development. Ten years of fans of the series waiting for this grand conclusion to an apocalyptic world(s) event. Ten years waiting to take on actual gods combatting undead twisted demons and ghouls and darkspawn.

A single failure that failed BECAUSE executive meddling tried to force them to make something that they're not known for and that their fans don't want – Redfall seems to have largely failed because of constant attempts to make it fit into The New Hotness (live service microtransaction yadda yadda) and like ... maybe you should let the single player immersive sim guys just make a single player immersive sim.
all their history reduced to nothing bc xbox decided that all their resources should go to the 36228th call of duty and a new fallout sequel bc now there is a show on and they need the hype to sell more. the future looks terrible. Thanks for nothing.

Dead By Daylight Developer Behaviour Interactive Is Laying Off Up To 95 Employees
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/dead-by-daylight-developer-behaviour-interactive-is-laying-off-up-to-95-employees/
Dead By Daylight Developer Behaviour Interactive Is Laying Off Up To 95 Employees

Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive is laying off roughly 95 employees, the company has announced. The majority of those that will be affected – 70 of the 95 – work at the studio’s Montreal, Canada, office, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.
As for why, the company cites restructuring as it pursues a clarified vision around “multiple strategic changes.” Behaviour says these layoffs will not affect its service business or its development on Dead by Daylight.
“To pursue this clarified vision [lead in horror, lead in service, and explore the possibilities of location-based entertainment], Behaviour will implement multiple strategic changes to its corporate structure, improving the distinction between its product, production, business development, and marketing resources,” a press release reads. “As a result of these changes, the company will reduce its team by up to 95 employees, 70 of whom are based in Montreal. Each of these individuals offered valuable contributions to Behaviour, and will be fully supported by the organization in pursuing the next step in their careers.”
Outside of Dead by Daylight development, Behaviour is helping The Quarry developer Supermassive Games develop The Casting of Frank Stone, a single-player horror game set in the Dead by Daylight universe.
These layoffs arrive a few months after the studio laid off roughly 45 people at the same Montreal office back in January and join an ever-growing list of disheartening layoffs and studio closures in 2024.
Fae Farm and Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs laid off the majority of its staff and canceled its in-development games back in May, and that same week, Square Enix announced it will begin layoffs as part of “structural reforms.”
In May, Xbox closed four Bethesda studios, including Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and Redfall studio Arkane Austin. Take-Two Interactive closed Rollerdrome studio Roll7 and Kerbal Space Program 2 studio Intercept Games alongside major layoffs to its indie-publisher Private Division label. That same week, we learned Deliver Us Mars developer Keoken Interactive had laid off nearly its entire staff.
Elsewhere in the year, EA laid off roughly 670 employees across all departments, resulting in the cancellation of Respawn’s Star Wars FPS game. PlayStation laid off 900 employees across Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and more, closing down London Studio in the process, too. The day before, Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games announced it laid off 90 employees.
At the end of January, we learned Embracer Group had canceled a new Deus Ex game in development at Eidos-Montréal and laid off 97 employees in the process. Also in January, Destroy All Humans remake developer Black Forest Games reportedly laid off 50 employees and Microsoft announced it was laying off 1,900 employees across its Xbox, Activision Blizzard, and ZeniMax teams, as well. Outriders studio People Can Fly laid off more than 30 employees in January, and League of Legends company Riot Games laid off 530 employees.
Lords of the Fallen Publisher CI Games laid off 10 percent of its staff, Unity will lay off 1,800 people by the end of March, and Twitch laid off 500 employees.
We also learned that Discord had laid off 170 employees, that layoffs happened at PTW, a support studio that’s worked with companies like Blizzard and Capcom, and that SteamWorld Build company, Thunderful Group, let go of roughly 100 people. Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive also reportedly laid off 45 people, too.
The hearts of the Game Informer staff are with everyone who’s been affected by layoffs or closures.

LOTR Gollum’s Steam Player Count Officially Hits Zero, Multiple Times
I had high hopes for The Lord of the Rings Gollum. While its concept was less conventional compared to other Lord of the Rings games, I was intrigued by the complexity of the character and the advertised Smeagol vs. Gollum system. However, Gollum's peculiar underground journey failed to meet my expectations, a sentiment reflected in its Steam player count. As noted in our review of The Lord of the Rings Gollum, there wasn't much to admire about the gloomy adventure of the former Hobbit. Having watched several playthroughs myself (I do have a life, I assure you), I'm still uncertain whether it was intended to be an RPG or a clunky platformer. In any case, The Lord of the Rings Gollum struggled to attract a player base. After learning that the game's apology statement was purportedly generated by an AI tool called ChatGPT, I delved into the game's Steam statistics, and they are quite disheartening. Over the past 30 days, The Lord of the Rings Gollum has averaged only three players, and in September, it averaged 3.2 players. According to Steam Charts, there hasn't been a single day in October without at least one period where the game had zero players. It appears Gollum will have to navigate the Orc camp all by himself. While I thought the player statistics for Redfall were disappointing, this one genuinely saddens me. I have cherished memories of growing up with The Lord of the Rings and enjoying titles like Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. A part of me had hoped that Gollum would bring something fresh and exciting, but it seems that's not the case. It has been a while since we had a noteworthy Lord of the Rings game. While the upcoming cozy game from Private Division and Wētā Workshop looks charming, I yearn for that grit, sorrow, and conflict. Hopefully, Amazon's mysterious new Lord of the Rings-inspired MMORPG will fill that void. Additionally, there's another upcoming PC game that might capture your interest if you're a Middle-earth enthusiast: Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. You can explore all the details we have about the Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria release date, or if you simply want to satisfy your fantasy cravings, you can check out our list of the best fantasy games on PC. Arkane Austin was actively working on updates for Redfall including single player offline and content that deluxe game buyers were waiting on.
Arkane has never been a huge studio presence, but it has a history and reputation for extremely solid games with very well-defined studio values. They (with their sister in Lyon) developed some of my favourite games including game of all time Dishonored (2012).
Hi-Fi Rush by Tango sold 2 million copies in its first two months of sale. Arkane sold about 450 000 copies of Dishonored in its first month as a comparison.
Unironically I think we might run into another video game crash like back in the day
#capitalism#video games#bethesda#microsoft#arkane#capitalism is about killing innovation and experimentation for the sake of an extra thousand dollars in the pocket of#an investor who has barely heard of super mario#Microsoft is worth three trillion (TRILLION) dollars by the way#Canada's entire GDP is just over 2 trillion $ and it's the 10th richest country by GDP#my posts

Jason Schreier's latest investigation is into what happened with Redfall. in tweets about this & the article itself he references BioWare with the "BioWare magic" stuff. [source, two, article link]
Quote from article:
"A Poor Compromise
Still, expectations remained high. During a 2021 press conference, Xbox positioned the bloody vampire extravaganza as one of the company’s big upcoming releases, dramatically revealing it as the event’s show-stopping finale.
Yet during the final frantic months, the remaining Arkane staff found themselves stretched thin and the debut date was pushed back from Halloween of 2022 to early 2023 and then eventually to May 2, 2023. Along the way, Smith and other leaders assured the staff that the game would get exponentially better once the final art was implemented and the bugs were fixed, promising that “Arkane magic” would manifest at the last minute as it had with previous games. (Other developers, such as Electronic Arts Inc.’s BioWare, have been widely criticized for using similar language.)
In the end, Redfall never coalesced. Several people who played the game in 2021 were shocked to see how little ultimately changed. The final glitchy product felt to some critics like a poor compromise between single-player and multiplayer ideas that failed to please fans of either type of game." [source]

Trying to formulate some point around like, those early 2010's overwhelmingly panned games like Ravens Cry and Ride to Hell: Retribution. Middle budget games destined to fill out the xbox store that were, from concept to execution, truly bad. In a way that movies like the Room are, we could at the very least watch funny videos about shitty glitches and nonsense.
Sort of trying to contrast that between your average "failed" game of today. Where a 70 dollar game made by the best companies in the world for like a 100 mil end up just being kind of meh. Ravens cry marked the death of those mid-size companies, swallowed up by the likes of EA/Ubi/Activision. But somehow, todays AAA games end up just as empty as the old bargain bin trash, while being downright evil too.
Trash back then was a couple of bucks. Now its a 100 dollar investment and takes up your entire SSD. Shit like Redfall aren't really fun failures, we can't laugh at this mess of a game. Arkane Studios was producing some truly innovative fps single-player games until Microsoft snatched it up to use its workforce to push out another looter-shooter multiplayer live service.
Redfall dashes the hope of any new Dishonored, Prey, or Deathloop. Or at least, hope of them being any good. I can't really find an entertaining angle of that.

Arkane developers: *explicitly state that they asked Microsoft to let them stop trend chasing with Redfall and rework it into a single player title like they wanted, but Microsoft ignored them because they wanted money*

Redfall - Official Announce Trailer - Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2021
It’ll launch for Xbox Series and PC in Summer 2022. It’ll also be available via Xbox Game Pass.

Overview
An Open-World Co-Op Shooter Coming Summer 2022
Launching exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC in Summer 2022. Play it Day One with Xbox Game Pass.
Bite Back
Redfall is an open-world cooperative first-person shooter from Arkane Austin, the award-winning team behind Prey and Dishonored. Continuing Arkane’s legacy of carefully crafted worlds and love of creative game mechanics, Redfall brings the studio’s signature gameplay to the co-operative action and FPS genres.
Welcome to Redfall
The quaint island town of Redfall, Massachusetts, is under siege by a legion of vampires who have blocked out the sun and cut the island off from the outside world. Trapped with a handful of survivors against diabolical enemies threatening to bleed the town dry, choose your hero from a diverse roster, grouping up with others to create the perfect team of vampire slayers.
Slay Together
Redfall blends single- and multiplayer options seamlessly, allowing the player to venture into the darkness alone or to squad-up with up to three friends for four-player co-op. Teammates can try different hero loadouts and combine their strengths to overcome the vampire legion and their brood of maniacal followers.
Devinder Crousley is an internet-famous paranormal investigator, amateur cryptozoologist, and aspiring inventor. His recent book tour landed him in Redfall, just before it went dark. After years of struggling to create cutting-edge tech to hunt paranormal phenomena, everything is finally starting to click. In Redfall, monsters are real and his inventions work. As he puts them to use fighting vampires, he documents every step of the way. If he gets out of this alive, he’ll have all of the validation he needs.
Layla Ellison moved to Redfall from Wisconsin. She studied biomedical engineering at Redfall Technical University and interned at the ominous Aevum Therapeutics research facility, where apparently something went very wrong. She says everything after that is kind of a blur. The last thing she remembers is waking up with a killer headache and wild telekinetic powers.
Remi De La Rosa is a combat engineer, and a brilliant one at that. She’s lived her life on the frontlines of conflict, using her brilliant mind to protect her loved ones and help those in need around the world as part of an elite Navy rescue unit. On their way to investigate the Redfall incident, her ship was destroyed, and her entire crew was lost. Now, with the help of her robot cohort, she’s determined to help rescue Redfall’s survivors and eliminate any enemies that stand in her way.
Jacob is an ex-military sharpshooter, sent in to Redfall just before the sun darkened as part of an elite private security force. Dark circumstances separated him from his platoon, forcing him down a rogue path. Now he stalks the streets of Redfall, neutralizing evil from the shadows with supernatural precision. Look for a mysterious, ragged raven circling overhead—you may not see him, but Jacob will be nearby.
Reign in Blood
Redfall’s vampires aren’t your typical bloodsuckers. They were created after a scientific experiment went horribly wrong and are continuing to evolve. After their transformation, some vampires develop powerful abilities and grow into bigger and badder vampires. But they’re not the only thing standing in your way – players will also face off against the human cultists who worship the island’s hungry new leadership with the hopes of joining their ranks.

upcoming games i’m looking forward too. this is according to their release dates. ps. I have linked all the trailers/sources of info.
the medium [2021]
it's a psychological horror game that plays out in two different worlds, one being the rational one and the other being a darker, more honest one. The publisher and developer for this game is Bloober Team. This game has already been released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox Series X/S on 28th January 2021 and it's coming to PS5 on 3rd September 2021.
lost judgement [2021]
this game is a sequel to the game ‘judgement’ or ‘judge eyes’ which is one of my favorites. The publisher is Sega, and the developer is Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, who have developed the infamous Yakuza series. It is very Yakuza like but it's also very different. In the first part, the story follows Takayuki Yagami, a lawyer who got a murderer, Okubo Shinpei, acquitted. Yagami retires from being a lawyer and becomes a detective, only to be forced to face his past again. The sequel has a different storyline and I can't wait! It's releasing on PS4 and PS5 on September 24th.
fatal frame: maiden of black water [2021]
yes, this game was released in 2015, I know. but it's actually releasing on PS4 and PS5 soon! this is the fifth installment in the series published by Nintendo and developed by Koei Tecmo. The story follows Ren Hojo, Yuri Kozukata and Miu Hinasaki to Mount Hikami, a sacred location haunted by bizarre and unfortunate occurrences. will the three be able to find the truth behind the mountain? fatal frame series is a Japanese survival horror game which was first released in 2001.
replaced [2022]
it's a 2.5D retro single player game that takes place in a city called Phoenix, where an artificial intelligence is trapped inside a human body. It's a dystopian story set in the alternative 1980’s. but with all of that being said, it is only coming to Xbox and PC. The developer is Sad Cat studios and the publisher is Coatsink. if anyone remembers in E3 2017, there was a 2.5D game called ‘the last night’. Yep, it's very similar to that.
redfall [2022]
It follows the story of four friends namely Jacob, Layla, Remi and Devinder, that are protecting the island town of Redfall, Massachusetts, which is under siege by a legion of vampires who have blocked out the sun and cut the island off from the outside world. You can choose your hero from a diverse roster, grouping up with others to create the perfect team of vampire slayers. It's an open world co op shooter game, the developer being arkane studios and publisher being Bethesda. It is launching on Xbox Series X|S and PC in Summer 2022.
a plague tale: requiem [2022]
this game is the sequel to the single player game ‘a plague tale: innocence’ that follows the story of amicia and her brother hugo as they try to survive in war torn medieval France pursued by the Inquisition and an endless horde of ravenous rats. It is an action adventure horror stealth game. It's developer is Asobo Studios and it's publisher is Focus Home Interactive.
stranger of paradise: final fantasy origins [2022]
okay, yes, I know the trailer was very shitty but I promise you, you should watch the gameplay. It's much better and more likeable. this game is a spin off of final fantasy and is being developed by Team Ninja and published by Square Enix. The story follows Jack and his allies, Ash and Jed that desperately want to defeat chaos. Yet, doubts remain. Are they truly the Warriors of Light like the prophecy said?
lost souls aside [no date]
I don't know much about the storyline but the game has very final fantasy x devil may cry vibes. The trailer for this game was originally released in 2016, by a guy named Bing Yang. He was developing this entire game on his own, till recently. He has [I think] earned a grant from Sony and has his own team now and they released 17 minutes of gameplay on IGN! so you should go check it out. There is a possibility it's a PS5 exclusive but I'm not sure. And they haven't given a release date as of yet.
senua’s saga: hellblade II [no date]
this game will be the sequel to the action adventure game, hellblade: senua’s sacrifice. Published by Xbox game studios and developed by Ninja Theory, this game is still in the making as it's developer updated. The story follows senua, a warrior, who must not only overcome physical challenges, but also those presented by her mind.

Redfall Was Reportedly Set To Receive A Big Offline Play Update This Month Before Arkane Austin Shutdown
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/redfall-was-reportedly-set-to-receive-a-big-offline-play-update-this-month-before-arkane-austin-shutdown/
Redfall Was Reportedly Set To Receive A Big Offline Play Update This Month Before Arkane Austin Shutdown

Arkane Austin was reportedly set to release a big Redfall update this month that would have added offline play to the always-online game before Microsoft suddenly shut the studio down, according to IGN. This follows yesterday’s news that Microsoft was shutting down Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, Mighty Doom studio Alpha Dog Games, and absorbing Roundhouse Games into ZeniMax Online Studios.
This offline play update would have addressed one of players’ biggest complaints with the game – that Redfall always requires a connection to the internet – but now that update will never see the light of day. It’s an especially concerning detail considering now that Arkane Austin is closed, the day when Redfall servers are no longer live, rendering the game unplayable, seems closer than ever before.
[embedded content]
IGN also reports that it was told the now-canceled Hero Pass, which would have added two additional playable characters to Redfall, was scheduled for release around Halloween. It obviously won’t be released now – Bethesda says those who purchased the Hero Pass will be eligible “to receive the value of the upgrade” – but if it had hit the game around Halloween, that would have been roughly 18 months after Redfall’s launch.
Redfall hit Xbox Series X/S and PC on May 2 to poor reviews from critics – read Game Informer’s review here – and players alike, and the first-person multiplayer vampire shooter failed to recover, with Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer saying, “I’m upset with myself,” when asked about its launch.
According to reports, some of Arkane Austin’s staff hoped Microsoft might cancel Redfall or reboot it as a single player game, following the former’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media in 2020 for $7.5 billion. Arkane Austin director Harvey Smith said Microsoft canceled a PlayStation 5 version of Redfall following this acquisition.

Redfall studio job listing indicates returning focus to single-player
Redfall failed to live up to expectations as the immersive sim developer released a co-op vampire-slaying RPG in the style of Far Cry, which wasn't the game Arkane or Microsoft expected it to be. But if a recent job offering is any indication, it appears that following Redfall, we'll be getting yet another Arkane Austin single-player game. It seems that Microsoft is doubling down on Arkane Austin after the Redfall launch fiasco, as a new job listing could suggest that the Dishonored, Prey, and Deathloop studio is indeed going back to its roots. Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty already made it clear that Arkane Austin, the Arkane division responsible for developing Redfall, won’t be shut down due to the game being a “miss,” as it actually had quite good play on Game Pass. This job listing could indicate exactly what Arkane Austin wants to get back to though, or might mean some sort of single-player revamp for Redfall. A lead technical engineer job is currently available at Arkane Austin, and three preferred skills could outline what the studio has planned, especially in regards to returning what players loved most about its games. The job’s preferred skills are as follows: - Experience with real-time concurrent systems - Experience with network and online features - Familiarity with single player action-RPGs and immersive sims With Booty’s statement and a Redfall patch, it’s clear that the vampire multiplayer shooter isn’t being left in the sun, but for my money these three skills make it sound an awful lot like Arkane Austin is going back to what worked best at the studio. The team has always been iterating on its immersive sim games, with Dishonored getting two protagonists and Deathloop adding a Dark Souls-esque invasion system to its action-RPG gameplay, so the request for a single-player experience tells me we’re going back to that. That might not come as much of a surprise, but the job listing does appear to cement Booty’s claim that Austin isn’t being tossed aside anytime soon. If you want something in the vein of Redfall then we’ve got the very best vampire games you need to play, alongside the best multiplayer games too. Read the full article

While "Redfall" may be a disappointing co-op game, this supernatural shooter can be fun when you go alone...well, for a while anyway. Here's the link to my review of "Redfall" as a single-player game. 🎮🧛🔫
