No one can convince me that Redluck from Granblue Fantasy couldn't be the son of Jecht and Auron for how ridiculous similar to them he is.

A while ago I looked into the naming conventions of the different Granblue races, because I didn't quite get them. I did this ultimately to name some bit characters and also because I was curious.

Anyway, I found this post, which summarizes it quite handily:

Draphs: for males, both the first and last characters of their name end in "a" vowels, and at least one will be a voiced (dakuon) or semivoiced (handakuon) consonant (Ba-ra-wa, A-gi-e-ru-va); for females, the first and last characters of their name end with the same vowel (N-a-ru-me-a, K-u-mu-yu, Su-tsu-ru-mu). Exceptions to this are Redluck and Izmir, both of whom use pseudonyms, and Kumbhira.

Erunes: all Erune names are composed exclusively of characters ending in vowels, "n" inclusive, using no voiced or semivoiced consonants; (Yu-e-ru, Su-kaa-sa-ha, So-shi-e). Ilsa and Drang are both exceptions to this; Drang is using a pseudonym, and Ilsa's may be a matter of Society security.

Harvins: all Harvin names contain at least 2 characters from "ra," "ri"," "ru," and "ro" (Bu-ri-ji-ru, Sha-ru-ro-tte, Yo-da-ru-raa-ha). Furias is an exception.

It is certainly interesting to look at.

Anyway, my excuse for my Draph OC Sonata's name not matching the theme is that she was adopted by a Harvin couple, presumably as a baby, and they weren't super familiar with Draph culture and their naming conventions, so they did it wrong. Besides, exceptions exist everywhere.

Since i created the list of LGBTQ+ characters in granblue i wanted to make more, and this is one of them.

The list will be in alfabetical order, and I will mostly be including playable characters and summons with some special mentions, also some of these chars are slightly tanned, i'll mark them as (ST) so don't shine a light on them or you'll scare their melanin away.

Episode 1459: Nude Ears Battle!

Translator Notes:

Okay, so I have to address the question I imagine many are wondering: “Nude Ears Sova”!?

I’m sure most have pieced together that it’s meant to be a play on “New Year’s Soba”, which is a reference to the Japanese tradition of eating soba noodles as part of ringing in the new year.  But where the heck did this name come from, exactly?

Well, the answer is that it came from some very silly wordplay.  “New Year’s Soba” in Japanese is 年越しそば, pronounced toshi-koshi soba, literally “year-crossing soba”.  Nude Ears Sova’s Japanese name is 斗死鼓士ソヴァ, also pronounced toshi-koshi soba, but completely nonsensically meaning something along the lines of “Big Dipper Death Drum Soldier Sova”.  The title makes absolutely no sense that I can tell, so in that respect I think the English localization is a actually pretty good one - it’s similarly playing off of the phrase “New Year’s Soba” in a completely nonsensical manner.
