Jake x tonowari x hybrid fem reader
(reader is omatikaya and metkayina mixed)
Takes place in the Metkayina Village
When men from both clans try and court the reader because of her body (because she had a big chest and butt) so she has to deal with men constantly trying to win her over even though they all know she has a mate already but they don’t care so when one of them gets frustrated and starts to say mean things about her and saying “your mates only wants u for your body and nothing else” to make her feel insecure about her body (because reader is very confident about her body and is not afraid to show it off to people letting people know how confident she is about herself) so she starts loss her confidence over what the guy said about her so unfortunately she starts to question Jake and tonowari about if they love her for the only her body. Jake and tonowari is trying to convince reader that’s not the reason why he chose her out of all people to be his mate.

“Cmon just a little peek. I know you like the attention.” A na’vi man leaned over to you, cooing at you to flash him. He had been at it for half an hour now, begging and bribing you into showing your goods. It was a great offense of him to take, but as long as your two lovers were out of sight it was free game for these men.
“I am mated with Olo'eyktan’s. It would be shameful for me to do so. It is also against Eywas will.” You tried one last time to scare the na’vi men off. Usually the mention of the clan leaders sent them running, but this one was different. His face contorted in disgust, anger. He stood quickly from the rock and scoffed, holding his hips as he began to dish you out. “That's alright. You know I was just trying to help you out.” He started. “Everyone knows they just wanted you cause you look good on their arms. They don't care about how fucking smart you are, or how fucking talented you are if you have any. They only care about your fucking body, and I bet they wouldn't even look your way if you didn't have all that junk hanging from your body.”
The na’vi man spat at your feet as he stormed off. This wasn’t the first jab anyone has taken on you about your body, but you couldn’t stop the tears that pooled in your eyes from his comments. Being more voluptuous than the average na’vi came with some perks, you were healthy, and more protected from the elements. The future perks would come when you would bare your children, often hearing your mom and grandmother speak of how their bodies handled their children well.
The negatives came from the objectification you were subject to. Everyone wore the same amount of clothing, but you seemed to be bothered more about it. It’s been this way since you were a teen, but you decided to embrace it. Walking confidently around the reef like no one could tell you anything. But you would be lying if it didn’t hurt to be seen as a walking doll.
You stood from the rock and rubbed your eyes, planning to take the long way home so you could process what just happened. Tonowari and Jake courted you a little less than a year ago, and it was surprising to say the least. Some Metkayina questioned why you out of all possible suitors. Now, you started to question it.
‘Everyone knows they just want you cause you look good on their arms’
What if Tonowari needed someone pretty to call his wife? One that wasn’t Tsahik material but one that had the privilege of being easy on the eyes to other clans. Jake was from earth, many of their women probably have similar builds as you. Maybe he chose you because he wanted something that could pass on Pandora and Earth.
Your chest tightened at these thoughts, and you found yourself mindlessly strolling into your pod, past your two lovers and into bed. You hadn’t even realized how fast you retreated to bed, until your two lovers joined you, positioning themselves on each side of you. Jake wrapped his hands around your torso, hugging you right below the breasts. “Rough day?” He asked. You didn’t fall blind to the positioning of his arms, but you shifted, nodding at his suggestion.
“Just tired.”
The next morning you woke right before sunrise, planning to meet up with Norm who was sure to have something that could help. He was in the village because of a small sickness that was spreading amongst the na’vi, so he was bound to be up all day and night.
“Norm.” You knocked on the pod entrance. The avatar stood from his desk and hit his head on a small lamp that dangled over him and his space. “Ouch! Hey.” He greeted.
“I need your help.”
“You sick too?” He began reaching for a mask.
“No! No.” You shook your hands frantically. “I was wondering if you had some clothes I could wear.”
“Clothes?”
“Yeah…like human ones.”
“Oh?” He tilted his head in amusement. It wasn’t often that a na’vi would ask for human clothes, especially the reluctance to divert from their normal traditional clothing. “Well I have some here.” He walked over to a tote that was labeled ‘extras’. He opened the box and began pulling pieces out, displaying them to you. “Well, we only have these jumpsuits, and long sleeves. Not a really pretty pick.”
You gleamed at the clothes, and how much skin they seemed to cover. This would be perfect, perfect enough to take the attention off of you. “I’ll buy it all!” you exclaimed.
“Y/n we have no one to wear these, just take them.” He looked at you concerned. You began stuffing the clothing into your bag and bid him goodbye, scurrying back home to put on the clothing.
You wanted to get dressed before your two lovers woke up, which gave you a small window to do so. In the mirror, you stared at the na’vi woman who had now become unrecognizable. A pair of cargo pants that slightly flooded and a long sleeve gray tee that hugged your breasts tightly, but still concealed the lax nature of them rested on your flesh. You never saw yourself taking measures like this before, but you needed to know, wanted to know how much your body was worth in this land.
Smiling, you spun around in the outfit one last time before walking into the main room. “Goodmorning Jake. Tonowari.” You said confidently. You could hear a pin drop at the silence that came after your arrival. The two men looked shocked to say the least. “Morning…” Jake looked at you up and down.
“New style?”
“Yeah. Gonna be like those earth girls.” You began to pose like a woman in an earth magazine you had seen before. Jake chuckled before looking down in his bowl. Tonowari still stood looking, with an…indifferent smile on his face.
Internally your heart pounded. They hated it.
You went to work and continued your duties as normal, fishing and distributing your findings amongst the Metkatyina. The clothes seemed to the exact opposite of what you wanted. Metkayina men and women stared at you, even more so than before. You never realized how invisible you were before you started to wear human clothes. It made you shy away, not wanting to speak or talk to your friends as you were embarrassed to face the question as to why you were wearing the clothing.
“Wow.’ A familiar voice came from behind. You turned around swiftly to see the same guy that had harassed you standing there with his friends. “The lengths you’ll go for some attention.” His group of friends began laughing, which caused you to ball your fists up.
“You look more pathetic than you did before.”
At that you swung, throwing a punch at the na’vi male before storming off with tears in your eyes. You arrived at an empty pod and immediately went to your small bag of human clothes, angrily ripping and biting at the fabric. You fought with the cotton and rolled around on the pod floor as you blanked out and animalistically destroyed the clothes.
“Hey. Hey!” The lights in the pod came on and you felt yourself being snatched up. Yanking yourself from their grip you looked at the two men questionably. “What do you want from me?” You spat.
“What?”
You began to cry, grabbing at your chest as you yelled at them. “Don’t play dumb! You only want me because of this right? You don’t care about me as a person.” You began ranting.
“Y-”
“I tried putting on regular clothes, ones that draw attention away from me. Clothes that are normal to your kind.” You pointed at Jake. “But you guys looked at me like I was crazy! Everyone looked at me so stupid!’ You cupped your face and began wailing.
You felt a warmth on your shoulders, hands, massaging the area.
“Y/n. We were surprised is all. You look beautiful in anything.” Jake reassured.
“Lies!” You spat. “You only look at me when I have no clothes on.”
“Wha- Y- No- Where is this coming from?” He said in disbelief.
You searched his eyes, trying to find a glint of inconsistency in his words, but you found none. You sucked in a breath and looked down. “Men have been…saying things to me. All my life.” You confessed. “They said…the two of you were only with me to make yourself look good.”
At this moment Tonowari stepped in, pressing Jake aside to grab you at the shoulders. “Who fed these lies to you? Tell me. They will be gone by eclipse.”
“That's not what I want!” You hissed. “I just…wanna know. Why did you really court me?” You looked at both of them.
Soft smiles began to spread across the mens faces, ones that told you alone that this whole time you were being foolish. “I saw how in touch with the ocean you were.” Tonowari recalled. “I saw you swimming late one night, beyond the reef, which was against the rules, but you were so…at peace.”
“I saw you dancing at a clan dinner.” Jake chimed in.
“I remember that! When she scared everyone with that yell she did.” Tonowari’s eyes brightened at the memory.
“We can go on and on about the strange, and beautiful things we've witnessed you doing. It was never about your body sweetheart.” Tonowari lifted your chin and kissed you, nipping slightly at your bottom lip as he did so. When the two of you pulled away you looked into each other's eyes lovingly.
“Don’t let anyone else damper your light sweetheart.”

Title: Reunion Part 1
Pairings: Lo’ak (21) x Navi Reader (21) x Neteyam (22)
Warnings: MDNI
Contains: fluff, sexual tension
Background: The Sullys have been away for years. They have just returned to the Forrest, not only bringing with them joy and hope but also uprooting masked feelings.
Word count: 1335
Tumblr media
It has been a month since the Sullies returned from the reef to the forest and weeks since you’ve seen the boys. They both have grown and evolved since the last time you saw them. You all have. You’ve grown up with the Sully family and the void they left since their departure forced you out of your shell to find more friends and become part of a new clique. News of their return had everyone excited and rushing to greet them. However, you kept your distance as you were fearful it would reignite old feelings for the younger Sully son.
You’re in your kelku getting dressed for the morning’s events when the door suddenly bursts open. You gasped as you shield yourself with your hands hovering over your dripping body.
“Who the fuck-“ you yell out fangs gnashing.
“Oh my god y/n!” you heard a familiar voice cry out “I’m sorry my intention wasn’t to- “
“Shut the door before you expose me further skxawng” you hissed.
The door immediately shut, darkening the room once more and trapping the much needed heat to recover you from the ice cold morning air. The draft that was let in was so cold it made your blue skin prickled with goosebumps and nipples perk up. At the time you grabbed the closest thing to cover your naked wet body which was thin layer of cloth usually used to wipe your supple skin dry after taking a morning wash.
“Sorry y/n.”
There stood a tall, muscular built familiar figure with his face facing the wall of your hut, you admired his broad shoulders and strong back eyeing his braids that were still swaying from his sudden movement.
“Lo-ak what are you doing here?!” you shrieked as you hurriedly dry your skin and dress with your loincloth and braided top, your black hair sticking to your damp body as you hurry to dress and cover whatever you could unsure of what exactly Lo’ak was able to see.
“What do you mean what I am doing here?” he scoffed, face still turned to the wall. “I have been away from the forest for two years and back a month now and you haven’t even stopped by to see me, or my family.”
You remain silent. Trying to tie your beaded top to and pull it over your breasts to hide you hardened nipple. Deep in thought you didn’t realized Lo’ak had turned away from the wall in your silence. Your eyes raised and met with his and suddenly you felt a warmth radiating from your stomach.
“Shit.” you whispered.
You expected him to look away once your eyes met, but he didn’t. His eyes suddenly changed, the once soft and curious expression was replaced with narrowed eyes and a mouth left agape.
“You need help?” he asked, his voice low and suddenly husky.
“No, I got it” you say, quickly turning around in embarrassment as you fiddle to loosen the ties around your neck to lower the beaded top in efforts to get more coverage.
You suddenly feel his hands on yours pushing them away so he can untie the knot himself.
“I said I got it” you huffed out annoyed.
He swats your hand away as you reach back up to the back of your neck.
“You certainly have grown” he whispers as he unties the bundles of knots you created when hastily trying to get dressed.
Your arms fell to your sides as you nervously listen, his breath on your neck, his chest eerily close to your back.
“I’m sorry I didn’t get the chance to visit as yet, I got caught up with my duties,” you said in a hushed tone. An obvious lie.
“Ah, yes I’ve heard you’re one of the head flyers now, one of the patrol warriors.”
He’s been asking about me? Your thoughts began to swarm your mind when the beaded top’s position shifted. The knot was untied. You took a step forward and now correctly positioned the top over your semi exposed breast, still facing away from him. You took the pair of strings and tied them under your bust and then the neck strings and tied them around your neck in quick movements. All while you can feel Lo’ak’s stares on you.
You turn around quickly to still find him staring, but with more distance, braced on the nearest wall staring with a smirk plastered on his face. It’s like he can sense how uneasy being alone in the hut makes you. Two years ago you would not have imagined being able to be alone with him as the hut you currently live in belonged to you and your parents. But ever since their deaths, it’s just been you occupying the hut.
“My my, y/n, you look more beautiful than the last time I saw you” he said as his eyes scan your na’vi body, fixating on your breasts then moving down slowly to your hips and back up to your eyes.
You look away as you feel the warmth in your stomach grow, you clear your throat trying to regain the confidence you had.
“Shall we go and join everyone at the gathering for breakfast?” you asked quickly changing the topic and ignoring his flirtatious advancements.
He immediately huffs and springs himself off the walk to walk closer towards you, you backed away slowly. Your eyes never leave his. You are stopped abruptly as you hit the back of nearby furniture. Lo’ak continues in his advancements until he is inches away from you. The height difference has you staring at his chest as he towers at you. He reaches a finger under your chin to bring your eyes back to his and smirks. You can feel your face redden. His other hand reaches at your waist.
He’s always been aware of your feelings for him despite your failed attempts to hide it. He noticed how clumsy you’d get around him. How nervous his stares made you feel. How self-conscious you were every time he was around. Despite you never acting on them or outright confessing your feelings for him it was as if he read your mind and would constantly tease you. Now he’s back and these very same feelings came flooding back with just one touch.
“I’ve missed y/n, haven’t you missed me?” He whispered. His face now inches from yours and suddenly you can feel the heat travel from your stomach to between your legs. Your breathing is hitched.
“Lo’ak I-"
You are suddenly interrupted by the sudden pull of the door. You really need to get yourself one of those human locking mechanisms that Norm has, you thought to yourself. The movement breaks the tension between you, too, resulting in both of you jumping away from each other as if you were almost caught.
“Y/n!” a familiar males voiced boomed at you.
“Nete?” you cried out happily.
“Oh dam it’s so nice to see you y/n after all this time!” Neteyam cries out rushing towards you as you rush toward him to give him a hug. He picks you up and spins you around. You forgot how much you missed the Sullys. Neteyam always looked out. He was the one responsible for you being one of the best archers in your clan. Before he left he would always spend extra time teaching you his own techniques. You didn’t even realize how much you missed him. You can feel Lo'ak's glares on both of you.
Behind him came Kiri, who was a year younger than you but always kind. You greet her with another hug as suddenly tears swell in your eyes. You forgot what it was like to be embraced by persons who cared, it reminded you more of the absence of your own family.
“What are you doing here brother?” Neteyam asks as he glances to Lo’ak.
“The same reason you’re here bro.” Lo’ak says while he stares at you the hungry expression not leaving his eyes.

Rank all the monster high movies
Say less.
Tumblr media
New Ghoul at School 7/10 pretty much pilot episode for the web series and commercial for the dolls itself ( all the movies are just one long commercial btw) It's as highschool introduction you gonna get. Tho it's wild everyone got mad at Frankie trying have Deuce as her bf when nobody told her he's Cleo's boo( pun not intended)
Tumblr media
Fright on 7/10. I NEVER seen this cover before but the "movie" is in 2d form. Also kinda fruity they put Clawdeen and Draculaura on the cover lol. I want say the artists were trying covers out before going full 3d for the next round of movies. Anyway the ghouls tackle racism/prejudice.
Tumblr media
Why do Ghouls fall in love 7/10. Official first 3d monster high movie. Cute movie despite the typical highschool cliches. CA Cupid design still a fav ( wild she got transferred to Ever after high but oh well) I realized there's couple of Draculaura centric movies hmm might explained why she became face for reboot. Also Val was suppose be closet gay but you know how Mattel be.
Tumblr media
Escape from Skull shores 6/10 I don't remember much from the movie expect it's Frankie centric and it's King Kong type movie. The girls swimsuits were very cute tho. Also realized they literally cut and dye their hair and when back at school they in their default design lol. Anything for the aesthetic. The 2022 reboot better ot disappoint fashion wise.
Tumblr media
Ghouls Rule 5/10. Another predjuice plot movie. I do like they brought in humans. I mean with have best boi Jackson for a reason lol. Kinda shame we never saw the other humans in web series. And Hot take the ghoul rules designs are my least favorite out doll line. I like Frankie's and Cleo's outfits but that's about it
Tumblr media
Frdiay Night Frights 8.5/10. By far my favorite of the movies. Plot is sexism bad, girl power plot but still cute. And they introduce Best girl Robecca and Operetta. Also roller derby outfits were my favorite of doll line theming
Tumblr media
City of Frights 6/10. Don't remember much, it's Clawdeen centric movie. Move best girls introduced Good doll outfits. Like I said the movies just long commercial for the doll line theme
Tumblr media
13 wishes 8/10. Howleen centric loved the plot. Great outfits. Even more best girls in the movie lo. Lowkey wish Howleen kept her curly afrohawk hair. I'm not against the idea of her changing her style because she's figuring herself out.
Also we got these baddie designs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frights camera action 5/10 I just don't remember much of this movie expect we got Honey, Viper, and Elisabat. I think it's Draculaura centric movie
Tumblr media
Freaky Fushion 8.5/10 another good movie. Got good lore with Robecca and Frankie’s family ( was it canon they were cousins-ish?) Loved they introduce that monsters do breed with other monsters. Draculaura gonna have some cute werevamp babies lol. I realized that any Frankie centric movie she gets a kinda sorta love interest that’s never brought up again. But Frankie x Jackson/Holt always my Otp so there’s my bias
Tumblr media
Boo York 9/10 Song slaps, best girls bangers. Outfits killer Nuff said
Tumblr media
6/10 hate they recon half of everything. They redesign the main girls but others like Toerli and Venus keep their regular designs from OG wave. Clawdeen’s fam got redacted. Only good thing is the girls may look 12 but outfits match that age. Animation was nice. We got milf werewolf mom and Dilf Dracula. The movie implies Dracula just adopts Frankie lol but maybe Frankenstein IP wasn’t for grabs yet
Movies I didn’t see: Great scarier reef and Haunted. Believe those were last movies before reboot. Other movie from reboot series was Electrified

"But- but," your friend, Lo stammers, "You're supposed to be my friend!"
"Lo, for the last time, I'm not going to be the third wheel on your date with Reef!" you exclaim.
Lo Ridgemount, your best friend, had been begging you since early this morning to join her on her date. And for the life of her, saying no didn't seem like an answer.
"But Ty's coming too!" she quickly explains.
"Wait," you pause, "Your brother is going to third wheel your date? Isn't that, I don't know, weird?"
"Yeah, but Ty wants to supervise to see if Reef is serious about our relationship. Which he totally is," Lo adds, "But if you're there too, Ty won't be so focused on Reef and me!"
"What's that supposed to mean?!" you exclaim.
"It means my brother likes you, duh!"
"Lo, have you eaten sugar today?"
"Yes, but that's not my point! My point is, my brother, likes you but is too much of a chicken to ask you out, so I'll do it for him."
"You're one hell of a sister. You know that?"
"I know."
— — —
"I can't believe I allowed you to drag me into this," you say, sitting on Lo's bed.
"Oh, don't be such a baby." Lo stands in front of the floor-length mirror, admiring her outfit. "You're going on a date with Ty. What more could you ask for?"
"Um, not fourth-wheeling on your date with Reef?" you reply, "Does Ty even know I'm joining?"
"He does, actually," Lo says.
"Then I guess it's not so bad," you mumble.
"Great. Now come on, we don't want to be late for the movies!"
Lo grabs hold of your hand, pulling you up from her bed. She rushes downstairs, tugging you behind her. Eventually, you both reach the Resort, where Ty and Reef stand. Ty glares at Reef, forcing the boy to take a step back.
"Reef!" Lo squeals, jumping into the boy's arms. Reef's arms snake around Lo, squeezing her tightly. "I've missed you!"
"You saw me earlier today!" Reef smiles.
"Yeah, but I never got to spend time with you!" Lo explains.
The two seem to be in their own little world, ignoring your and Ty's presence. You roll your eyes before joining Ty's side.
"Do you think they're going to be like this the whole night?" Ty whispers.
"Most probably," you answer, "At least they're having fun with each other."
"Guess we'll have to make our own fun, won't we?" You smile at the hand Ty offers you. You grab his hand, his palm parallel to yours, and you interlock fingers.
"I guess we will."
The Whalebus soon arrives with Kahuna in the front seat. You and the others hop on. Lo and Reef sit at the back of the bus while you and Ty sit in front, hands still interlocked. The ride to the theatre is quiet, for the most part. You can hear Lo and Reef go on about their day, but you and Ty enjoy the calm atmosphere between you two. When arriving at the movies, there lies a long line waiting ahead.
"Do guys you know what movie is playing?" you ask, exiting the shuttle bus.
"I think it's a horror," Reef says, hanging his arm around Lo's shoulder, "But with Kahuna in charge, who knows what it will be."
"Ugh, I hope not." Your wrap your arm around yourself protectively. "I hate horrors." You shudder at the thought of the movie being about a psycho clown, a killer doll, or a creature that only walks in the shadows.
"Hey." Ty pulls gently to his side, holding you close. "There's no need to worry. I'm here to protect you," Ty whispers the last part, causing you to smile.
"Yeah, you're worrying for nothing (y/n)," Reef says.
"Says the guy afraid of the dark," you retort, holding on Ty's arm.
"Hey! I have you know I'm getting better," Reef clarifies.
"Really? That isn't what Lo's been telling me."
"You told her?" Reef questions Lo who only beams sheepishly.
You snicker at their encounter before looking towards the ticket booth where Kahuna gives customers their tickets. The line is shorter than before.
"I'm glad you decided to join us," Ty says.
"Well, I wasn't going to let you monitor the kids all by yourself," you joke, "Besides, I've been wanting to hang out with you for a while now."
Ty raises an eyebrow. "Really? And why would that be?"
"Let's just say I've fallen for my best friend's brother."
He's about to respond, but Kahuna calls out for the next group to move. "Pay with whatever you got compadres."
You and the others pull out the trinkets and objects you brought with you.
"Wow, these things are great." Kahuna hands you guys the tickets. "Enjoy the movie."
Lo and Reef enter the building, and just as you're about to, Ty pulls you back.
"Hey, what gives-"
You're interrupted by feeling Ty's lips against yours. He kisses you softly at first, and then with a gradation of intensity, you cling to him, kissing him back. You pull away breathless, staring up at the boy.
"So, I take it you like me back?" you ask.
"What gave that away? The fact that I kissed you? Or the fact I've left my sister alone with Reef?"
"Let's go with the first one."

You must have stood at the back of the yacht for a while because the shore and the docks were barely visible at this point. Every minute that ticked by you weighed your options of just diving in and swimming back. Everything you came up with seemed fine to deal with. So what if your hair got wet and you had to go through your four-hour wash and treat routine. So what if you attracted a shark or two, you could swim. So what if everything in your bag got drenched, you could replace them.
With the number of rebuttals you came up with, you should have jumped in already. The major con that was flashing in your head in neon lettering was you are an adult and not a child who ran away from difficult situations. The sound of laughter had you turning around to see Chris laughing with Harper. He looked like he didnt have a care in the world. Scoffing, you turned back around and crossed your arms.
Almost a minute later you felt Chris standing beside you. “If you want to swim back I’m sure you could make it.”
If looks could kill, the one you gave him should have done it. All you had to do was push him overboard to a watery grave. Chris lifted his hands to show his no threat status and that was when you walked away.
“All right folks. It’ll be another forty minutes before we arrive at the best fishing spot in all of the islands. It’s my little secret. In the meantime, you have a choice of activities. You can go down below and marine watch, stay on deck and do some pictures and sights, or go into the bubble where you are surrounded by the ocean. It is optimal for fish watching. I’ll let you folks know when we’ve arrived.”
Tumblr media
You nodded and walked toward the steps that would lead below deck. You fully intended to get as far away from him as possible. Ignoring the way he turned to you as if he had something to say, you carefully went down the steps and to the back of the yacht. There you found what Harper was referring to. It looked like an actual bubble with two seats. Once you sat down you saw why this was mentioned as the most sought-after experience. You really felt like you were alone under the ocean and not apart from it but one with it.
You watched a school of yellow and black striped fish swim by and a small box popped up to the right of the screen with a still photo of the fish and a few listed facts.
“Moorish Idol fish. These fish commonly inhabit tropical to subtropical reefs and lagoons. These fish usually travel alone or in small schools. These fish mate for life and adult males show aggression to one another.”
Your jaw dropped. You hadn’t expected it to be high-tech. In front of you, you grabbed the flipbook and flicked through it to see a variety of sea creatures. The announcement of another fish brought your attention back to the ocean before you and that is where your eyes remained. Creature after creature swam by and up to the glass. Each one was announced and described. As they came up, you took pictures of the pretty ones you liked ready to show them to your family when you returned home.
You were so wrapped up in fish watching that you didn’t notice that you weren’t alone until it was too late. Chris slipped into the seat beside you, startling you. Your harsh glare landed on him with the force of fifty blades behind it. He wasn’t looking at you though, his eyes were glued to the water and passing reef life.
“Oh wow, Nemo and Dory,” Chris exclaimed inching closer to the glass.
That was all it took for your attention to go right back, and lo and behold there were Dory and Nemo lookalikes.
 “Wow.”
Mirroring Chris’s actions you slid to the edge of the seat as well and touched the glass. They were pretty in animation but that had nothing on real life. The orange and blue were so striking up close.
“They’re even best friends in real life,” Chris quietly said.
For the next few minutes neither of you spoke again you were too wrapped up in looking at all the fish that passed by one after the other. When you’d reached a part of the ocean where life was scarce, you sat back and crossed your arms.
 “Can I please explain?”
You sighed and dropped your head back to rest on the hard headrest, keeping your eyes trained in front of you.
“I promise I’m not this asshole you have me pegged as in your head.”
“So you don’t go around trying to charm women out of your panties and in your bed for notches on your bedpost?”
 “God no!”
You rolled your eyes not believing one word.
“I solemnly swear that I am up to nothing but good,” Chris replied holding up three fingers.
Tumblr media
A smirk teased your lips at the Harry Potter line he’d just repurposed for his own use mixed with the Hunger Games salute. You shook your head unable to ignore how adorkably stupid he was.
“You know those two have nothing to do with the other, right?”
Chris slyly smiled and shrugged. “It’s sorta my thing. Sleeping around and I have nothing to do with each other also.”
You snorted and shook your head. He was smooth.
“You’re real smooth, I’ll give you that.”
He sighed and turned his body more to you. “It’s a misunderstanding,” Chris began.
“Let me stop you there. Ninety-nine point nine percent of the time anyone starts off with that, chances are there was no misunderstanding,” you dryly informed.
“That high? Okay, then I fall in the point one percent.”
You glared at him again but he didn’t back down, he held your glare but behind his eyes, you saw nothing but sincerity rather than the hostility you had spearing behind yours. When you didn’t object, he opened his mouth to speak again but you looked away.
 “There’s no need.”
“Why won’t you let me explain?”
You knew why. If he explained and the explanation seemed plausible and he looked sincere the chances of you believing it would be eighty percent and that was high. You would then continue spending time with him because you did enjoy his company and conversation and eventually sleep with him. Maybe. Letting him explain was step one that would lead to a series of missteps. Then you’d find yourself in a situation come the end of the cruise when both of you went your separate ways. There were too many what-ifs in the air.
“Ah, I think I know. If you let me explain then this image you have of me being a womanizer who is after fast and quick ass, who would come on a cruise to chase women for a notch would be debunked. If it is debunked, then you’d have to admit that you liked spending time with me and enjoyed yourself. Then you’d have to admit that what might have happened if my phone didn’t ring wouldn’t have been a one-off. You’d have to face the possibility that there might be something here past our physical attraction.”
Well damn, you thought. For a moment your thoughts betrayed the steely animosity in your eyes and you knew your shock shone through. You quickly looked away from him and tapped into your inner Elsa while watching a school of white fish pass by. You could feel him beside you staring at you as if trying to crack your resolve. You fought against him and kept your breathing slow and steady.
“You don’t have to tell me I’m right. I know I am and it’s not because I’m a cocky prick. It’s because—,” Chris paused then sighed heavily before he continued. “I liked spending time—with you. Like really liked it and this was before anything physical happened. You’re funny and fun and not phased by this thing called fame that is wrapped around me. You probably don’t understand it, but that’s something refreshing and attractive to me.”
Unable to resist any longer, you sneakily glanced at him while wondering if any part of what he’d just said was possibly true.
“Before I came on this cruise to get away from my life—run away from my life.”
Your interest piqued. Why was he running away? Didn’t he have everything?
“My friend, the one you heard on the phone was teasing me about the reason. I didn’t want to give him the real deal so I kept quiet which led him to the conclusion that it had something to do with a woman. It didn’t but he thought it. So the phone call was him stating his opinions again, his way of life. Now I’m not condoning what he said at all but that’s his life. I didn’t come here for any of that and that night wasn’t about that for me.”
 “What was it about?”
You blurted the question without a thought and once you’d asked, you regretted it. The answer wouldn’t do you any good.
Sighing, you looked back out to the water. “Don’t answer that.”
And he didn’t. The silence stretched and your thoughts did as well. You contemplated his explanation and the probability of any of it being true. He had all the reason to lie right now, but the more you thought about it the more you guessed he didn’t need to lie being who he was. He could have just shrugged and put you on the side that wasn’t a fan of his and kept it moving.
“Look,” Chris said shoving his phone to you with the text exchange between him and someone named Austin was visible.
“I know what it is to be distrustful of strangers or everyone really and proof means a lot to me. Since the burden of proof is on my side, here it is.”
You read through the exchange from a little over a week ago and sure enough, his friend Austin was scum. The irrefutable proof showed those sentiments were his and even showed Chris admonishing him for those sentiments and setting him straight. The banter that continued was Austin teasing him about his good boy behaviors. From the texts, you could tell they were close, and you could also tell that Austin was the asshole between them and Chris was possibly a good guy.
Groaning, you looked away and dropped your head back to the headrest again. You did not need this. Sighing, you closed your eyes and listened to the silence. Several minutes passed by where neither of you spoke and just when you were going to Harper’s voice came in over the ship’s intercoms.
“We have some dolphin action up here if anyone’s interested.”
 “Dolphins!”
Your head snapped to Chris hearing the uncharacteristically excited squeal. Did he really just turn into a Powerpuff girl? Chris leapt to his feet and began walking toward the steps leaving you there to wonder just what kind of man he was.
A few moments later, you emerged from below and walked to the railing to see a dolphin jump out of the water in the distance.
Tumblr media
“Oh my god!”
At that moment you felt your smallness in the world. There were so many other creatures that were bigger and yet humans always thought themselves so superior. It was baffling.
“It’s not always like this, they must be here to greet you folks,” Harper said as another jumped out and one swam up.
You dropped down to your knees and peered over the railing and marveled at the aquatic beauty.
 “They’re so friendly.”
Just then, a dolphin popped up showing its long bottlenose and black eyes and in the same breath, a stream of water came at you drenching you. In your shock, you just sat there while Chris and Harper heartily got their laugh in at your expense. To add insult to injury the dolphin even sounded like it was laughing. Who could be mad though? It was too cute. You looked across the way and saw Chris snapping pictures of you with a wide smile on his face. Being alarmed, snapping at him, or even telling him to delete the pictures would have all been acceptable reactions but you didn’t react in any of those ways. Instead, you brought your attention back to the dolphins in the water. Let him take his pictures, you thought.
Twenty minutes later you were sitting at the side of the boat with your legs dangling over the edge enjoying the breeze, sun, and tranquility being on the ocean brought. There was something so serene about being in the middle of a giant body of water with creatures of plenty underneath its depths while there was nothing in sight for miles and miles. It was peaceful. The pictures you took of the horizon, the sky, and the water were breathtaking. You knew they’d make great printouts to add to your walls when you returned home. When you realized your battery was running low, you dug into your bag for one of your four fully charged portable chargers and slipped your phone into one of the many waterproof pouches you had your belongings secured inside.
Your sister liked to make fun of you for how well you prepared for things. When you went out for every day, your purse contained every possible thing you would and could need for the day. You didn’t like being unprepared for whatever you came across and that included something as minor as rain all the way to the major things like abductions. You’d been the butt of many jokes but you didn’t care.
Glancing to the other side of the yacht, you watched as Chris followed the instruction of Harper as he practiced a variety of sailor’s knots. It didn’t look like he was a novice though. You could tell he’d done it a few times before. Sooner than you could look away, Harper caught you then motioned you over. It would have been rude to ignore him, so you walked over to them and sat before them.
“Here, try your hand at sailor’s knots,” Chris suggested holding out a length of rope to you.
“It’s not as easy as it looks,” he followed up as you took it.
“You look like you’ve done it before.”
 “Once or twice,” he replied.
You studied the knots surrounding Chris for a few moments then took a stab at it. From the beginning you messed it up but didn’t quit, instead, you undid it and tried again. You didn’t quit easy. That was probably why you were in your current relationship predicament. A few minutes and several failed attempts later, you held up the finished product that looked identical to Chris’s.
“So you have one of those brains where you can see something and replicate it?”
You scoffed and shrugged. “Kind of. I just pick some things up quickly.”
Chris nodded and held out another length of rope and pointed to a different pattern. “Try this one.”
You knew it was a test. You grabbed the rope and studied the new pattern that was a lot more intricate than the first. Though it was more intricate it took you a shorter amount of time to start. When you held it up for them to see, less time had passed and you hadn’t made one mistake.
“Wow,” Harper exclaimed before he chuckled.
“What can I say, I’m pretty amazing,” you joked.
Both men laughed but didn’t debate the fact.
“We’re coming up on the cove that gives me the best fish. Of course, we’re catching and releasing, but it won’t dampen the experience,” Harper informed.
Within a few short minutes, Harper had pulled up to one of the most beautiful coves you’d ever seen. The water was aquamarine crystal blue. It was so crystal like you could see several feet into it. The giant rocks that created a maze had moss growing off the tops of them that were lush green and created a nice contrast of colors. If you could have picked up this view and brought it home with you, you would have. It was that breathtaking.
You weren’t the only one thinking it, Chris was a few feet away snapping every picture he could get, only he didn’t look like a tourist. He looked like a professional travel photographer. When he dropped to one of his knees to get a different angle you just leaned against the railing and watched. The sun beaming down on him gave his hair a reddish hue which looked good on him. It even accentuated the freckles peppered along his arms. You remembered what was under that shirt of his at that second. You remembered the muscles, the hair, and the tats. It was an unexpected sight but one that you wouldn’t mind seeing again. Instantly you kissed your teeth and slapped your forehead.
 “Cut it out.”
 “Did you say something?”
Chris was looking at you with a quizzical expression with his camera still posed up.
 “Nope, nothing.”
He didn’t look like he believed you, but slowly he went back to snapping his pictures while you tried to create even more distance between you.
“Get a grip, Ajali. It hasn’t been that long. You’re not affection starved either. Get—a—grip.”
You took a few slow breathes and focused on the scene before you. You now understood why many people said this island was a top destination for vacations.
“And we’re ready. You both said you’ve fished before, right?”
You walked toward Harper’s voice then saw he had fishing rods, buckets, gloves, and all the other supplies lying at his feet.
“I’ve done some fishing,” Chris offered before both sets of eyes landed on you.
 “Never.”
“It’s not hard, I promise,” Harper assured bending for the rods. He held one out to Chris and the other to you.
 “Thank you.”
“I’ll explain everything and its function. If either of you have any questions let me know.”
Harper walked a few feet away leading the two of you to a shaded portion of the yacht. Once there, he explained everything in detail. He showed the parts of the rod, showed how to put things together, explained their function, and then went on to the different kinds of bait that were available. When he began demonstrating how to hold the rod and posture you paid close attention and imitated what he did. You knew though this was something that would take some getting used to.
After twenty minutes, the three of you were in your spots ready to cast your rods. You watched Harper cast his first and it looked so fluid. You could tell he’d done this thousand of times. Then you watched Chris and though his movements weren’t as fluid, it looked like he was far from a beginner. You sighed and tried your best. The rod was heavy in your hands and affected your ability to control it and cast it perfectly. Glancing at Harper, he shrugged.
“Good enough. You got it where it needs to go.”
A soft chuckle escaped both you and Chris.
“What kind of catch do you get out here?”
Harper proceeded to explain the different kinds of fish he’d caught to Chris while you partially zoned them out. It didn’t take long for you to understand why people liked fishing. It was calming. You could leisurely do it while letting your mind drift and worries float away. Thirty minutes later it was your line that tugged first. You yelped then squeaked as you panicked.
 “What do I do?”
 “Reel it in,” Harper said.
The resistance on the line was giving you a good arm workout. The struggle went back and forth. You doubted this was a baby.
 “This thing is strong.”
“You got it, put your back into it like Ice Cube,” Chris teased making you narrow your eyes at him. That only made him laugh loudly.
A few more moments of struggle persisted until you’d yanked the rod backward tucking it out of the water, over your head, and flopping the fish right on the deck.
“Aaaah, oh my god! I caught a fish!”
You jumped up and down excited by your success. Forgetting any prior slights you jumped closer to Chris and bumped shoulders with him.
 “I did it!”
 “You did.”
“Good job. This here is a Barracuda,” Harper announced.
“Ooooh Barracuda,” you and Chris said in unison like the song. The two of you giggled together before returning your attention to Harper.
“It’s not an adult, but it’s no baby either. You want a picture?”
 “Yes!”
You scurried to your bag and pulled out your phone then handed it to Chris before you dropped down to your knees and bent to the fish still flopping on the deck and smiled as you’d just won the lotto. Chris laughed and took the picture a few moments later. After the first few shots, you changed poses and let him take a few more. You watched as Chris’s face went from wide smiles to solemn confusion. Just as you were going to ask if your battery died, Harper spoke.
“Do you want to do the honors of releasing it?”
 “You mean touch it?”
Harper nodded and you ardently shook your head. “No thank you. I hear Barracudas like to bite.”
Harper laughed at you as he effortlessly grabbed the fish by its tail then chucked it back into the ocean.
 “It was just an adolescent.”
Chris held your phone out then walked back to his rod without a word. Slight confusion washed over you as you glanced at your screen to see one of the pictures he’d just taken, but your battery was fully charged.
For the next few hours Chris barely spoke to you, but when you glanced over to him, his eyes were always on you before he looked away once yours met his. It was a complete turnaround from before. It shouldn’t have bothered or affect you at all considering the reality of things, but it did bother you a little bit. Once the three of you had had your fill of catch and release the sun was beginning to disappear. Harper caught a huge Mahi Mahi, scaled and fillet it right in front of you, and Chris showing off his impressive knife skills. He then took the fish to prepare what he promised would be the best open ocean fish you’d ever had. You were excited to see the finished product.
Once Harper had disappeared down below you walked to the cooler, took out two beers, and walked over to Chris. He was sitting toward the back of the yacht watching the rocks in silence. You sat beside him, held out the beer, and waited for him to accept it. When he took it, he wasted no time twisting off the top and taking a mouthful. You sat there in silence looking over the view.
Tumblr media
“Who knew a celebrity could fish.”
“I’m not a celebrity all day every day. I have hobbies and free time.”
“I take it fishing is a hobby?”
“When I can get to it. Sometimes I can’t go off the grid to do it.”
You nodded and tried to picture him at a lake with a rod and bucket of bait catching fish. A soft smile spread across your face before you gulped your beer.
 “What’s one of your hobbies?”
Taking a deep breath you slowly released it. “Painting.”
 “You’re artistic?”
“Depends what you call artistic. I can slap some paint on a canvas and call it a day.”
Chris looked at you for a few moments. “Somehow I find it hard to believe it’s as lowkey as you’re describing. I bet you’re a modern-day Frida Kahlo.”
You smiled and shrugged. “I wouldn’t go that far.”
Silence spread between you again and the two of you sipped from your bottles. It was a semi-comfortable silence.
“Are you departing tomorrow or staying on?”
You wanted to ask why he wanted to know but decided against it. “Staying on.”
 Chris nodded. “Me too.”
Neither of you spoke again, instead, you watched the sky as the sun slowly began its descent behind the water. When Harper returned, the air filled with such a delicious scent that your belly grumbled loudly.
“And dinner is served. Harper placed the platter down on the table and you and Chris walked over to it. Your jaw dropped in amazement.
“What kind of kitchen do you have down there that can produce that?”
 “I’ve had tons of practice.”
The Mahi Mahi that was alive less than two hours ago was now cooked to perfection and decorated with papaya, and a green salad.
“Wow, this looks mouthwatering,” Chris complimented.
“It’s nothing fancy, just some fish with a papaya and seaweed salad.”
“Seaweed salad? Oh wow. You utilize everything huh.”
“Absolutely. I can tell you more about using everything you can to not only survive but make good food,” Harper said motioning you both to sit down.
“No one is serving you here, help yourselves there’s plenty.”
The three of you dug in taking portions of fish and salad. When you took a bite of the Mahi Mahi your eyes rolled to the back of your head. “Oh my god. This is so good.”
“All it needed was some salt, pepper, and lemon. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best way.”
Chris moaned and nodded in agreement with you. “Delicious.”
As the three of you ate, Harper told you all about his travels and time living on his own on the ocean and how he’d learned to survive on little to nothing. It was so interesting to hear his story. From it, you gathered he was determined, creative, meticulous, and persevering. He didn’t let anything stop him and because of that mindset, he said he’d seen a lot of wonderful things and had a beautiful life. Listening to him speak about his loves and losses and how it was just him in the end you couldn’t help but think about your relationships.
When he began listing off the life lessons he’d learned you made note of each and every one of them. You always thought the stories of the older generations were interesting. While most of their experiences were relatable, a lot of it wasn’t because of the difference in eras. In Harper’s era being a bachelor past twenty-two was seen as taboo, yet that was the life he lived. When he spoke of when he did get married, it was to the one woman he’d loved since he was twenty years old. The woman he’d been stupid about and missed out on two times. From the way he spoke about her, you knew she was his soul mate.
Glancing to Chris who was sitting diagonally from you, part of you wondered how relatable Harper’s experiences were to him. You thought back to the very few tabloid and gossip stories you’d read about him but nothing jumped out to you. The tabloids didn’t focus on one woman that he was possibly seeing, they didn’t highlight any crazy behaviors with any of them or even highlight breakups. That was part of how you’d pieced him together. The lack of information left for such a wide breadth of possibilities to put together.
“Take it from me young ones, when you’re walking down a dimly lit street of soft lights, and you happen to find that anomaly among the sea that shines a different light and makes everything else pale in comparison you do whatever it takes to hold on to that. You fight for it and don’t let anything or anyone make you miss out on it. None of us are here for a long time. One day I’ll join my Angie and we’ll be together again. I welcome that day, until then I’ll keep drifting.”
The three of you sat there in silence, each of you lost in your thoughts and worries. Was Javii that anomaly or was he part of the sea and you’d been mistaken this whole time? When Harper returned to the helm to captain you back toward land you were secluded from the rest of them and still lost in your thoughts. It had been days since you left and you’d figured out nothing. If anything, you’d added more to your plate to think about. This was what you hadn’t wanted to do and that was the reason you chose this option rather than staying in the city.
You began to wonder again about the person who would be that anomaly that Harper spoke of. Rather than thinking of your experiences with Javii, your irresponsible mind thought of your run-ins with Chris. When you’d seen him in passing before boarding the ship you’d noticed him in the sea of people and amidst every chaotic thing happening around you. Your brain singled him out. It did it again when you saw him in passing topside when you’d met Genevieve and in the lounge club. It was something you hadn’t focused on before but now it was all you could think of.
 “Get a freaking grip, Ajali!”
You smacked your head and dropped it down hunching over to hug your shins. Suddenly, you felt raindrops and those drops quickly turned into a waterfall.
“What the--,” you began holding your hands out confused how a downpour like this could just suddenly start.
Unexpectedly, the ship lurched hard to the left sending items on the deck toppling over including your beer bottle and the empty ones around it. Thinking quickly, you grabbed the railing to not tumble. Your grip was precarious thanks to the downpour and you knew you wouldn’t be able to hold on for long. Just as you were losing your grip, that was when the ship lurched again only this time to the right. With no time to grab for the railing, you tumbled over but before you hit the deck arms wrapped around you stabilizing you.
 “I got you.”
Glancing up, you found Chris with rainwater pouring down his face and beard. He was holding on tightly to one of the metal poles while holding you tightly in his other arm. When the rocking went from deadly to manageable, Chris slowly let you go.
“Something must be wrong. Let’s go.”
Both of you took off on the search to find Harper. Every few seconds the rocking of the ship made items fall and roll. Chris was the one to pull you in every which direction to help you avoid the bigger items. When the ship bucked back you both slid back.
 “Aaah, fuck!”
A sharp slice caught you off guard making you fall to the deck. Before Chris could react the boat rocked again sending you rolling back a few feet. When you slammed into one of the walls you shouted out in pain. Seconds later Chris was bent before you.
 “Are you okay?”
His eyes quickly scanned your body and found your bleeding foot.
 “Oh god.
Chris quickly pulled off his tropical printed shirt, ripped it, and began wrapping your foot.
“I’m sorry I have to do this tight to hopefully slow the bleeding,” Chris informed before he yanked the material, knotting it tightly around your injury. You tried to stifle your groan but it didn’t work. Your shout echoed across the open water and carried it competing with the downpour from the sky.
“I’m sorry. Ready to keep going? We’re almost there.”
You nodded and let Chris help you up. With his arm around your waist and yours draped over his shoulder the two of you hurried to the small enclosure where Harper was steering the boat. Every so often thanks to the falling and rolling items you and Chris looked like circus performers, jumping, dodging, and sliding out of harm's way. The way Chris managed to go into protector and alpha mode had you seeing a new side to him. Women did love a man who could take charge.
When you finally made it you found Harper passed out on the floor.
 “Oh my god!”
Chris placed you along one of the windows so you could lean against it before he dropped down to his knees to check for a pulse. The longer it took him to turn to you, the more anxious you became.
“He has a pulse, but it’s thready. Looks like he may have hit his head,” Chris informed before he ripped the while men’s tank he wore at the hem and pressed it to Harper’s forehead.
On impact, Harper groaned then bolted up.
“Hey, take it easy,” Chris shouted trying to compete with the loudness of the ocean and the rain.
“No. Storm. We’re in a storm. We call these pop-ups. They happen all the time,” Harper explained as Chris helped him to his feet.
“If you knew it was coming--,” you began.
“I didn’t. No one can predict these and they’re increasingly more dangerous.”
The yacht whipped as if it were a leash sending all three of you knocking into whatever was closest. Immediately the pain that whisked through you had you screaming. That was the first time you thought you were going to die. All you could feel was pain, all you could hear was the sound of your heart beating. You slowly opened your eyes but couldn’t make anything out through the haziness. You couldn’t pinpoint where the pain in your body was coming from, it felt like it was everywhere.
 “Ajali!”
Snapping your eyes open you saw Chris’s drenched and concerned face before you. “Open your eyes. Stay with me!”
It was a forceful command. One that you slowly obeyed. He helped you to a sitting position then turned back to Harper who was trying to stand to look over the built-in equipment of the ship.
“We’re way off course here. Somehow this storm has put us way off route. It makes no sense.”
 “What does that mean?!”
“It means we’re drifting and not towards the islands. We’re drifting away.”
 “What!”
Harper tried to turn the key for the engine but it stalled then sputtered. He tried it again and again but the result was the same.
 “This is bad,” Harper added.
 “What do we do?”
The ship rocked again but this tilt was so drastically different. It actually went so far on its side that it felt like you were going to capsize.
 “We’re gonna tip over!”
Chris ran from the small room fighting against gravity’s pull to yank him over. Your first thought was he was leaving you.
 “Hang on tight!”
Your scream was so loud you doubt you’d ever gone that high before. Terror gripped your heart and your entire life flashed before your eyes. You were certain you were done for. There was no way to make it out of this. You began mumbling but you didn’t know if what you said made any sense. A few seconds later, the ship dropped back into the water allowing you to remain top side up. You felt hands on your body and you opened your eyes to Chris shoving your arms in a bright orange life vest.
“I could only find one right now so it’s yours.”
 “What—what about you?”
“I’ll be fine. Hold on tight.”
He spun around looking at Harper.
 “I have to get below.”
Harper hurried out without another word and Chris turned back to you.
“I’m going to help him. Stay here.”
He made a move to leave and you grabbed his hand pulling him back to you.
 “Don’t leave me.”
“I’m not. I’m going below with Harper. I’m sure he’ll need my help. I think it’s safer for you up here.”
You still held tight to his hand fear controlling your movements. Chris’s expression softened before he took a step close to you to hold you at the side of your neck to the base of your skull.
“I swear to you I won’t leave you, no matter what. We’re in this together. I will be back and we’ll laugh about this one day. For that day to come though we have to get through this and I have to help him down below. You’ll be safe. Hold on tight, stay low.”
You nodded and took a few breathes trying to psych yourself up.
“You got this,” Chris said before he pulled away and walked from you.
You closed your eyes and said a silent prayer hoping for him to come back and that his words weren’t bullshit.
The seconds seemed to slowly tick by and the minutes went on for lifetimes. Every jolt of the ship leveled you to a whimpering mess. You did just as Chris has instructed—kept low and held on for dear life. You didn’t care how numb your hand became from gripping the cold metal for so long you kept holding on. You didn’t care how cold you got from not only the ocean water but the rain and the strong wind gusts, you remained in your corner shivering refusing to come out. It didn’t matter how much the pain you felt intensified the colder you got you ignored it and kept whispering your silent prayers. You didn’t want to die. Not like this.
You heard something like a loud crack then the groaning of metal then the ship once again tilted. You screeched and tried to hold yourself to the railing but the further the boat tilted the harder it was to hold on.
 “Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!”
You screamed again and braced yourself to end up in the water under the boat, but instead of it tipping it once again dropped back onto the water’s surface.
 “Oh my god!”
 “Ajali, can you hear me?”
You whipped your head around trying to find where the voice was coming from without letting go of the railing. You were too scared.
 “Ajali. Can you hear me!”
On the dashboard, you saw a red light flashing and guessed it was the radio. The only problem was for you to get to it, you’d have to let go and walk over to it. If the yacht tilted again you’d slid your ass out the room and off the boat. It was a risk.
“Ajali, pick up. We’re down here trying to fix the engine but we need you to turn her on for us. Can you do that?”
 “Fuck!”
You slowly stood, fighting against your aching joints, bones, and muscles, and stood upright with most of your weight on your uninjured foot. You assessed the distance from where you were to the dashboard and knew slow and steady was the best way but you doubted you had that time. You took a deep breath and took three hops on your good foot toward the dashboard. When there was just one hop left to take the vessel rocked sending you off balance and smack dab into the glass with your face.
At this point, there was no part of your body that wasn’t in pain. A metallic irony taste filled your mouth and you knew you were bleeding. You had no idea from where though, your face was completely numb.
 “Ajali!?”
Using the back of one hand, you wiped across your mouth and took another deep breath, and hopped to the dashboard throwing yourself across it and holding it for dear life. You took a few moments to calm yourself then grabbed the walkie.
 “I’m here.”
You heard Chris exhale as if he was relieved. “Thank god, I thought something happened.”
“I’m fine,” you lied while trying to wipe away the blood that dripped across the dashboard.
“Try to turn the engine on.”
You twisted the designated key all that happened was a long exaggerated sputter then hiss.
“This time keep it turned don’t release it,” Chris suggested.
Doing as you were told, you waited and begged the engine to cooperate. When you heard a yell over the walkie you knew it wasn’t good.
“Damn it! There’s water in the engine. The only way to even begin to work on it is for it to dry out. That’s gonna be impossible during a storm. It’ll just keep flooding. We’re not moving. Damn it!”
There was a full range of banging over the walkie that only made you panic more.
“Can everyone not fall apart right now? Please. I’m terrified enough as it is,” you pleaded.
“Listen to my voice, it’s okay. We’re coming back up. We just have to weather the storm,” Chris said. His voice sounded like he was panicking but was also trying to showcase calm. You heard both.
Another loud crack echoed but it wasn’t on your end, it was over the walkie.
 “What was that?”
The sound rang out again and everything went dead silent over the walkie before a loud crash of something breaking echoed out. At that moment the ship lurched again only this time the groan of metal was so loud it made you shake from fear. Garbled speech went in and out over the walkie alarming you.
 “He—hello?”
The only response you got was the walkie dying.
“Hello? Hello?” You pressed buttons and turned switches not knowing what any of them did but hoping one of them brought communication back.  Nothing helped though.
“Chris! Hello? Chris! Answer me goddamn it!”
You threw the corded walkie and dropped your head down and wailed. There was no hope at all you thought.
 “I’m gonna die.”
You cried, finally letting out the angst and terror you were feeling. There was nothing positive about your current situation. You were in the middle of the ocean, practically alone while a storm was raging around you. people went missing like this, people died like this. You were suddenly so tired. A wave of water brushed against your feet but you didn’t think anything of it. You almost couldn’t lift your head.
 “Ajali!”
As you lifted your head you saw Chris racing toward you.
“We have to get off this ship.”
 “What!”
“The glass broke. We’re taking in water and sinking—fast!”
Hearing those words you found the energy to rise. “What do we do? Where’s Harper?”
“He’s lowering the life raft. Let’s go.”
Chris wrapped his arm around your waist and helped you along. When you made it down the steps to the deck you saw that it was completely filled with water.
 “Oh my god.”
“It’s all right, I have you.”
He must have gotten tired of your hobbling because he scooped you up and hurried along treading through the now calf-level water.
 “You’re freezing cold,” Chris mumbled.
 “What are we gonna do?”
Chris reached Harper who looked as if he’d been through hell. From one glance you could tell he was hurt.
“Climb down first,” Harper said to you as Chris put you down.
You flinched as the saltwater wreaked devastation on your injured foot.
 “I’m scared.”
“I know. it’s expected, you’re human. I need you to work through that fear though and climb down into the raft,” Chris reasoned.
You nodded and tried to get over not only the terror but also will your muscles to move through them being near frozen. You tried to move your legs in some coordination to climb over the railing but it was taking a bit of time on your own. Chris stepped closer and helped you to take the first step down the ladder. When your injured foot joined your other one it slipped and sent you down a few of them only stopping when you were able to get a grip on the metal.
 “Are you okay?”
 “I’m okay.”
You slowly went down the remaining steps until you got to the last one and saw you’d need to jump off the railing to land in the raft. You took a few breathes, hoped that you made it in the raft and not in the ocean, and jumped. Landing on your back you couldn’t relax. It hit you that you were now in a life raft about to drift to god knows where. From above you heard the two men arguing back and forth over who should go next. When you saw Chris was the one climbing down the ladder you knew Harper had won.
It didn’t take him nearly as long as it took you. A few seconds later he’d jumped in next to you. The strong scent of gas immediately hit you.
 “You smell like gas.”
Chris smelled himself then his eyes widened and pointed back to the ship. The two of you looked up just in time to see Harper bringing back up the ladder.
 “What’re you doing? Come down!”
“No can do brother. This here is my ship and a captain always goes down with his ship.”
Your eyes widened in horror. He couldn’t be serious.
“That’s not funny Harper. The gas is leaking, there is no saving it. It isn’t worth your life. Come on, there’s time for you to save yourself too,” Chris rebutted.
“I’m long past saving,” Harper said lifting his shirt to show the large shard of glass that was sticking through his abdomen. It looked like it had gone right through him. You knew that if it were removed the chances of him living were zilch.
“Oh my god,” you mewled before clamping your hand over your mouth to stifle the wail that followed.
“Harper--,” Chris began but never finished.
“I always knew I’d die on this ship and that’s all right. I’m at peace with it. If I get in that raft with you I’d be doing you a disservice. Sharks would be on your tail in no time.”
Harper flung a pack over the railing into the raft.
“I’ve already pre-packed all the emergency packs in the raft. They’re in the side compartments as well as underneath the zipped platform of the bottom. These are things you’ll need wherever you wash up.”
Another bag followed the first and landed on the raft. “This one is some rations. Remember to conserve the water. You can survive without food longer than water.”
You cried louder while using your hand to muffle as much of the sound as you could.
 “Come on man,” Chris pleaded.
Four more bags followed including your backpack. By then you’d fully lost it and had ventured into a nervous breakdown.
“Inside the raft, there is a transponder. I am going to set off the homing beacon on my ship it’ll give search and rescue some idea of where things went wrong. They’ll be able to follow the signal and rescue you no matter where you are.”
Harper bent forward and groaned. He must have been in so much pain you thought to yourself. On its own, your hand gripped the ripped hem of Chris’s tank and held it tightly. Chris glanced back at you and you saw the same anguish you felt.
“I’m sorry about this folks, I really am.” He paused and shook his head before he continued. “You have each other though.”
An explosion shook the vessel and lit up the sky behind Harper.
“That’s my cue. Get outta here. I’ll do my part. Remember live your way, it makes death a peaceful conclusion.”
With that Harper hobbled away holding the railing.
 “Go!”
He disappeared from view leaving the two of you sitting in the raft, in the pouring rain heartbroken and terrified. Another explosion erupted and Chris sprang into motion yanking the cord that controlled the motor startup. He yanked it once, then twice until it sparked alive on the third try. You both looked to the ship unsure what to do. The decision had been made for you, there was nothing either of you could do but go.
Slowly the raft began to drift away from the sinking ship and neither of you could peel your eyes away. Two more explosions boomed and then Harper’s voice echoed out.
 “I’m coming, Angie!”
“Oh my god,” you whispered dropping your head to the surface of the raft. Your cry was loud and showcased the tragic sadness before you.
You watched on before another and final grand explosion ripped the ship apart sending parts every which way.
Tumblr media
“Fuck!”
Chris leapt for you throwing his body over yours using himself as a shield to protect you. The sound of flying metal around you only made you scream more and more. Still, Chris didn’t come off of you, he kept his body over yours while maneuvering the rod steering of the raft. After the sound of flying metal subsided and the warmth of fire died down Chris rolled off of you. There was nothing to be seen except the fire from the explosion that was quickly being extinguished as the rest of the ship sank to the depths of the ocean.
 “Oh my god, Harper.”
“God,” Chris groaned out, dropping his head down. “Rest in peace.”
There it was. Death. It was staring you right in the face and you feared it hadn’t had its fill quite yet. Your sobs returned and soon they were the only sounds traveling across the water, along with the motor. Neither of you spoke for a few minutes as you both tried to digest everything that had just happened and how everything had gone so wrong.
 “What’re we going to do?”
It was a question asked just above a whisper. A question that held so much uncertainty, a question that also brought so much fear with it. What were you going to do?

Our little paradise
Request: Anonymous. Hello! I was wondering if you could write something about Cevans having a panic attack or just feeling sad and the reader comforting him and then him thanking the reader and falling more in love. 🥺. That’d be so sweet. Because we know he cries a lot and doesn’t hide his emotions.
Pairing: Chris Evans x Reader
Warnings: Fluff, End of holidays.
Word count: 905
A/N: This is a little bit short. I’m sorry for taking so long to respond to requests / Sorry for my spelling and grammatical mistakes, English is not my native language, I am learning.

Suffice it to say that there was no other way of dealing with the facts. It had been the most insanely wonderful two weeks you had spent together. The island of Ko Phi Phi Lee had captivated you, its beaches of crystal clear water, its culture and above all its tranquillity, had made you feel as if it really was a paradise, and if it wasn’t, it was very close to being one. The limestone cliffs, which rise to over a hundred metres above sea level, and its Maya bay, were your favourite tourist destinations to spend hours walking around watching the sunset.
There were no worries, no stress, no negative aspects, everything was peace, happiness and love between the two. It was a time to rediscover yourselves, to know more deeply the person you had by your side. There was nothing and no one to stop you from being who you are, so you let yourselves go by forgetting the past and focusing on the present, on the moment you were living.
But the search for tranquillity also left time to enjoy the many activities that this paradise provides. You visited most of the islands in the Phi Phi archipelago and were dazzled by Monkey Beach, a word inhabited by hundreds of monkeys where you snorkelled, realizing that neither of you were experts in the field. However, that fact did not stop you from enjoying the aquatic life of the islands and visiting the coral reefs. At night the island changed, although you took advantage of the nightlife of the island to pick up your small bungalow, it was interesting to attend the fireshows that were offered in different parts of the island.
In short, you had created your own little universe, but like every beginning there was an end. It was the last sunset on the island, the next morning a flight would take you to Los Angeles, making a stopover in Australia. Inside you could assume that they had been the fourteen most romantic days of your whole life. This was how a halo of melancholy covered you as you watched the sunset from the Mayan bay.
You were sitting on the sand in Chris’ arms, who was depositing small kisses on your bare left shoulder. You felt the roughness of his beard against the softness of your skin and that, together with the delicate coastal winds, gave you sweet pleasure. You closed your eyes so that you could expand your senses and gently leaned against Chris’ chest, who changed the destiny of his kisses to your head.
“What if we forget everything and everyone and stay here and live forever?” you asked, concluding with a sigh.
In response Chris took your hand and kissed your fingers delicately.
“We could buy a small cabin and come here to enjoy these sunsets,” you added. “We’d bring Dodger, I’m sure he’d find that a good idea too.”
Chris didn’t answer again, he just kissed your hair and let out a little sigh against him. Curiosity invaded you and with subtlety, without letting go of his embrace, you turned your face to look at your partner. Chris’ cheeks were red, partly because of the time you had spent in the sunshine those days, but partly because he was emotional. When it dawned on you, you turned your whole body around and knelt down in front of him holding his face in your hands.
“Hey… what’s going on?” you asked delicately looking into his blue eyes.
Embarrassed, he smiled at you and looked away.
“Is it because if we stay here you couldn’t have your favourite pizza?” you said jokingly, trying to find his look. “Don’t worry, I’d take care of that, I’d have a plane loaded with pizzas from Leone’s.”
Chris exhibited a small laugh as he looked into your eyes again, circling your waist with his hands and causing a closeness between the two. You discovered that he too felt that melancholy inside, it had been a very special journey and in a few hours the dream would be over.
“You know that even if we return you won’t get rid of me easily,” you arched an eyebrow.
“And I thought I was rid of that red nose,” Chris brought his nose up against yours, causing you to complain about the sting of the shock because you hadn’t put on enough sunscreen.
“Hey, don’t mess with my nose,” you put a little kiss on his nose. “You’re going to have to put up with it for a long time.”
Chris filled his lungs with air and released it as a sigh, resting his forehead on your chest. You took the opportunity to caress his naked back and kiss his head, you could be in that position all your life.
“You know I love you, don’t you?” you whispered. “And these days have been perfect with you in this paradise. Well, the truth is that even if we had gone to the worst place in the world, it would have been perfect if you were there.
You felt Chris smiling at your chest, and then approaching your neck and kissing him, making you close your eyes and enjoy the moment. Your words were sincere, anywhere he was would be perfect, and he believed them with respect to you too.

Let's eat all the cicadas!
Tumblr media
Brood 17 - the unbelievable large swarm of 17-year cicadas - is already emerging in parts of America. This summer, Americans in the brood's path will experience a plague(ish) of locusts(ish), as the skies darken and the roads run slick with bug-guts.
Writing for Wired, Kate Knibbs brings us the cuisine of Bun Lai1, a renowned chef who has pioneered "sustainable sushi" and is now foraging in DC for early B-17 bugs to turn into chow: pizza, paella, and sushi.
https://www.wired.com/story/eating-cicadas-brood-x/
In much of the world, eating bugs is no big deal, and not just novelties like chocolate ants: think of chapulin tacos, the Oaxacan grasshopper delicacies. These are a serious seasonal delight in LA, and I can personally attest to their deliciousness.
https://www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-eat-your-crickets-los-angeles-chapulin-capital-20130709-story.html
The most exciting thing about eating bugs is not in the fact that they're bugs, but rather in that they are considered a pest and a problem, which we can turn into a delicacy. Bugs (including "pests") are high protein, low-carbon, and abundant.
If you pay attention to the climate emergency, it's hard to avoid the nagging sense that every time you eat, you're contributing to the planet's destruction. Food's got a heck of a carbon footprint, especially farmed food, *especially* farmed *meat*.

Which is why the idea of eating pests and invasive species is so exciting. It's not just the idea that you're eating "guiltless" food, it's the weird sense that maybe we can turn the destructive power of the capitalism machine on things we want to get rid of.
Capitalism, after all, is true star of Nick Bostrom's thought-experiment of a paperclip-manufacturing AI that optimizes and optimizes itself.
https://nickbostrom.com/ethics/ai.html
It barrels on and on until it turns the entire universe into paperclips. The "slow AIs" of shareholder capitalist enterprises pursue profit to the destruction of their environments, workforces, customers and societies:
https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html
It's a cruel irony that our asset bubbles are always fueled by destruction of something we need (like a breathable atmosphere and a planet that isn't on fire), rather than, say, the destruction of invasive species or pandemic viruses or similar.
https://boingboing.net/2021/05/10/power-plant-using-whole-output-to-mine-crypto.html
Wouldn't it be great if, instead of a foie gras-eating fad, we had a *kudzu*-eating fad, one that saw all the kudzu in the American south harvested to feed the rapacious kudzu-barons' vast kudzu empires? (Kudzu cookery exists, but has not caught fire).
https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/indiana/stories-in-indiana/kudzu-invasive-species/
Tumblr media
The closest thing to this that I've encountered in the wild are the delicious lionfish tacos in the scuba towns in Roatan, Honduras, where invasive lionfish (possibly descended from aquarium escapees) are destroying the reef ecosystem.
https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/southeast/ecosystems/impacts-invasive-lionfish
To be clear, lionfish taste good! But also, the experience of lionfish is doubly delicious because you know you're creating a market for scuba guides and fishermen to hunt lionfish, and if this drives them to extinction, that'd be a *good* thing for the planet!
This idea - driving a social phenomenon with markets - surfaces from time to time in science fiction. In Damon Knight's 1992 comic masterpiece WHY DO BIRDS?, an ad-agency is recruited to convince the entire human race to climb into a box (!).
https://memex.craphound.com/2018/12/28/why-do-birds-damon-knights-amazing-underappreciated-science-fiction-novel-about-putting-all-of-humanity-in-a-box/
The agency hits on a winning strategy: they announce that only rich people are *allowed* in the box and that box-berth prices are sky-high.
Soon, plutes are clamoring for spots, while the rest of the world demands climb-into-the-box equity to end being-in-a-box inequality.
Eight years later, Bruce Sterling proposed something similar to deal with climate change, in his brilliant 2000 Viridian Design Manifesto, which called on ecologists to rethink ecological measures as exclusive luxuries.
http://www.viridiandesign.org/manifesto.html
The idea wasn't to actually make ecologically sound living into the exclusive purview of the wealthy, but rather to make ecological living into something both status-defining *and* aspirational, creating demand across the board for sustainable technology.
But markets have a failure mode, that paperclip tragedy mode, which is that they are purely instrumental, driven to maximize their victory conditions irrespective of whether these become detached from their underlying goals.
Universal Paperclips are a subspecies of Monkey's Paws, in other words, a "be careful what you wish for" parable.
SF's got you covered here, too, as in Harry Harrison's "Make Room! Make Room!" (turned into the movie Soylent Green), where the invasive species we devour to save the planet is…us. (BTW, the Tor edition of the novel has a stupendous cover).

Alas, the actual situation is more Make Room! Make Room! than Viridian. Our carbon offsets are a market for lemons, useless performances of conservation what will always be cheaper - and thus more successful in the market - than the real deal.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/12/12/fairy-use-tale/#greenwashing
And nothing epitomizes the hollowness of the eco-luxury market like Tesla, a company that is only profitable because it sells carbon offsets that keep the SUV market alive - a company whose longterm stability involves bitcoin holdings with the carbon footprint of 1.8m cars.

Still, I would happily eat some Brood 17 I-can't-believe-its-not-foie-gras.

surrender | Edward Mortemer x f!MC
Pairing: Edward Mortemer x Elena McTavish
Word count: 7.5k+
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: N*FW
AN: In the words of Kacey Musgraves: I’m alright with a slow burn. But when you want to speed it up a little, that’s what fics are for, right? Takes place pre-chapter nine and also kind of skirts around the very end of chapter eight.
**Re-post due to my dumb ass trying to edit the original on mobile and it wiped the whole damn thing. Cool. Cool cool cool.

“Good evening, Miss McTavish?”
The words aren’t so much of a greeting as a question. It’s silly, then, that her breath catches a little. She hides it with a stretch, raising her arm above her head and letting out a throaty noise of content when her spine lengthens. Dropping back onto her heels, she watches Edward finish his ascent up to the crow’s nest where she stands watch.
“Nothing but sea and sky,” Elena replies.
“Aye, should be more of the same on through ‘til morning.”
He settles at his preferred spot, just a few feet from her. She wouldn’t be surprised if his boots have worn divots into the wood from the amount of time he spends up here.
“I’m no Al Roker, but I’d say the nice weather will continue. The sunset was as gorgeous as ever.” She tips her head to the side and bites down on her lip, trying to pull a script line from her memory. “What’s that saying, ‘red sky at night, sailor’s delight’?”
“Al Roker?” he repeats the name, his brow furrowed.
“He’s... a person who predicts the weather. Sort of.”
Edward’s gaze flickers from the sea to her, and then back again, huffing out a short laugh.
“It seems that you speak another language, sometimes.”
“Comes with the territory, I suppose.” Elena shrugs. “What with being a twenty-first century transplant and all.”
She doesn’t miss the quick search he does of the ship below, looking out for any wayward pirates with curious ears, but she knows, just as well as he does, that most everyone is tucked away in the galley below deck. The only other soul around is Maggie back at the helm, who makes a show of feigning interest towards the starboard to give them more privacy.
“I hope you don’t find me rude, that I still don’t know what to make of your… claims.”
“No offense taken,” she assures with a nonchalant wave of her hand. “I thought about what I would do if someone suddenly appeared in my house, claiming they were from your time.”
“And what would you do?”
“Call the cops and then threaten to sick my dog on them.”
“The dog wearing the life preserver?” he lifts a single eyebrow at her, the corners of his lips twitching upwards. “Aye, a truly terrifying sight to be sure.”
“Was that a joke?” she asks, her eyes wide as she makes a show of looking him over.
“You didn’t care for the one about falling in battle, so I thought I’d try out another.”
“Not bad. But I wouldn’t give up your day job quite yet.”
Edward hums his agreement and turns his sights on the ocean before them. Elena understands why he enjoys being up here -- she likens him to a king, high in his tower, or a lion, perched atop his rock; all the world is an oyster from such a height.
Tipping her head up, she takes in the night sky’s view. With little to no light pollution, especially this far out at sea, the stars come out in droves. The Milky Way is a cloudy, violet river that commandeers the horizon. It’s almost dizzying, the amount of stars visible, layers upon layers of them blooming across the sky. Elena’s never seen anything like it. Even when she and her sister would skip their Friday classes, drive up to the nearby state park, and spend the weekend up there, pretending they knew how to camp.
She thinks of the text on her phone from Gabby and the plans they were in the process of making for her to come visit Elena in Los Angeles. When she dropped out of college to follow her dream, the few family she remained in contact with ceased their feeble attempts at communication. When she made it to LA (or, rather, to the one-room hovel she could barely afford), Gabby was the only person on the other end of the line, trying her best to cheer her up. The pang of loss strikes her hard, somewhere behind her ribs. Other than her sudden departure from the set, Gabby might be one of the only people that notices her disappearance -- which is kind of sad, when Elena thinks about it, given that her sister still lives back in Austin.
That thought launches a thousand others. How long has she been gone? Is time moving at the same speed in the future? Is she even going to make it back home?
“Lovely, isn’t it?” Edward’s voice jolts her from her thoughts.
“Yeah,” she agrees, clearing her throat of the emotions that clog it. The railing is steady below her hands; she clings to it, trying to ground herself as best she can.
“Tis... not the same, where you’re from?”
“Where I live, it’s hard to see this many. I feel like if I could get a little bit higher, I could almost touch them.”
Edward looks back to the east, where the moon hangs low in the sky.
“I don’t see why not,” he murmurs, making a show of leaning close to continue, “if what you say about the moon is true.”
“The stars are a lot farther. And the moon isn’t exactly suitable to live on. At least, not right now. Or,” she pauses, her lips twisting into a grimace, “well, not in my time, it’s not.”
“I’m glad, then, that I’ve made the sea my home.”
If his words are tinged with melancholy, Elena doesn’t mention it. Though she could encourage him to elaborate, she doesn’t want to ruin this peaceful moment. The thought brings with it the memory of their afternoon swim: of his arm wrapped tight around her waist, of the hungry look in his eyes as he took his fill, of the ache in her chest when their moment was broken by the need to surface.
The crystal-clear, turquoise water of the cove brought its own reminder of the summer before her sophomore year of college. It was Gabby’s idea to use their open water diving certifications for something other than taking up space in their wallets. Having spent so much time after her gender affirming surgery entertaining herself with shipwreck documentaries, she booked the trip to the Florida Keys, flights and all, before informing Elena -- in typical Gabby fashion.
“I would never get tired of the views, that’s for sure,” Elena sighs. “Or the constant opportunity to explore whatever island I sailed upon. Like that tiny island we stopped at, I would love to dive there, spend some time exploring underwater.”
Glancing over, she spots Edward’s furrowed brow; she sifts through what little historical knowledge she has of diving. Have those weird, space-age looking suits even been invented yet?
“Sometimes, Miss McTavish, I wonder if I have not happened upon a selkie, with the things you claim.”
“Selkie?” she repeats, rolling the word around in her head, but recognition never comes.
“Aye, a creature of myth, though some people believe they do exist. My mother used to tell me stories when I was little, of the women who came from the sea. Once they reach dry land, they shed their seal skin and transform into a human.”
“So... kinda like a mermaid?”
Edward tips his head in consideration. “In a way. But selkies are usually considered to be gentler. Unless their seal skin is stolen, they favor their time spent among humans. And, when they tire of us, they return to their skin and resume their life under the sea.”
“That sounds sad, in a way. But I promise I went down in a diving suit, not a seal skin.”
“I’ve heard rumors coming out of England, of a man who salvaged sunken ships by trapping himself inside of a barrel. I assume that is not what ye mean, though.”
“No, not in a barrel,” she grins, pulling her phone from her pocket. “I can show you, though, if you’d like to see.”
“Ah, the black box of witchery.”
He moves closer as he speaks, though, clearly interested in taking another look at it. If he was truly frightened of it, she supposes, he could just lob it into the sea. Her grip tightens on the phone at the thought.
Navigating to her photos, she taps at the folder (embarrassingly titled we’re in miami bitch!!) and turns the phone so the images can expand into greater detail.
“Some of these I took with a disposable camera, so they aren’t the best,” she laments, swiping her thumb across the screen every few seconds. “But my sister -- she has this fancy underwater housing, so her pictures are nice and clear. I would message her for more, but I don’t think Verizon has that great of service.”
She can’t help but chuckle at her own bad joke. Edward, it seems, couldn’t care less -- entranced as he is by the colorful images of the coral reefs and the sponges sprouting from the USS Spiegel Grove’s rusted frame.
“These paintings are exquisite.”
“Pictures,” she corrects.
“You say that as if I’m to know what it means,” he counters.
She swipes to a selfie her sister had taken, the image capturing little else but their masks and the blue world around them. The next photo is better: a full-body shot of Elena in her wetsuit and gear, a cloud of bubbles floating above her head. “I suppose this explains you being such a strong swimmer, when you jumped in after Ginny.”
She shrugs at the veiled compliment and returns the phone to her pocket, avoiding his intense look that she can feel burning into the side of her head.
“Well, swimming in thirty-foot waves is a bit different from the calm waters of Key Largo, but thanks.”
Edward reaches down and skims two fingers under her chin. He tips her head up to meet his gaze, his dark eyes flashing with certainty.
“Make no mistake, though: I am to see that you do not perform such a stunt again.”
Elena knocks his hand away; irritation bubbles up inside her, heating her cheeks and neck.
“I wasn’t performing. I’m not the Wonder Twins. And I’d do it again, if Ginny or anyone else went overboard. Even for you.”
His expression sharpens, his mouth twisting into a frown. She crosses her arms across her chest and serves him a look right back. Whatever he’s about to say, she cuts off as she continues, “Just because I haven’t been sailing the high seas or… or crossed swords with some real buccaneers as long as you all have been doesn’t mean I’m not capable. I fought Robert and won -- I even got his fancy-schmancy sword -- and I sailed our ship through a storm, didn’t I? You need to learn to trust me and-- and… why are you smiling?”
The irritation fades from his face in one fell swoop, there and then gone, replaced by a soft smile that he seems to reserve only for her.
“Something you said, Miss McTavish.”
“I said a lot of things,” she points out. Despite the opening she leaves dangling for him, he doesn’t elaborate. She’s not sure why she expected him to; the man is stubborn to a fault. “Okay, fine. You can keep your charming and mysterious act. You certainly have it down pat.”
“As you do with your… turns of phrase.”
The tension between them cools, aided by the winds that blow towards them from the north. Elena settles at his side once more, the railing at her back. He gives a cursory glance over the horizon.
“You know,” she says, “I realized today that I never said thank you.”
“For what?” he returns his sights to her, curiosity warming his eyes.
“For getting me the hell off the Admiral’s ship. I knew he wasn’t a stand-up guy when he shot one of his own men, but knowing what I know now, I’m especially grateful.” She reaches out to touch his wrist, squeezing it for a long beat. Edward brings his other hand up and covers hers. “I know you took a risk, not knowing if I was a navy spy, but you brought me aboard anyway.”
“Even when we made you stand trial to prove such innocence?”
“Do you think I would’ve been given such a chance on his ship?” she asks, her tone thick with sarcasm.
“No, I do not.” Edward’s face darkens for a moment. “A man capable of such depravities would have treated you… terribly, no doubt.”
“Hey, like I said: white dude of high rank in the eighteenth century? He’s got about a two percent chance of not being an awful person.”
“You--” Edward pauses, lowering his voice as he continues, “are things… different, in your time?”
Elena bites at her lip, wondering how much she should divulge about the twenty-first century. Hope works much better if the outcome is still uncertain, and she doesn’t want to dash any he has for his own future.
“Different, sure, but also very much the same. There’s a famous expression: ‘those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.’ It’s -- let’s just say it’s been accurate more than once or twice.”
“I’ve never heard of such a phrase, but I understand its meaning rather well.”
“And, hey, that’s the second time now that you’ve referred to my ‘situation,’” she marks the term with air quotes. “Does that mean you believe me?”
Edward makes a show of heaving out a sigh. “I am making a valiant effort to do so. Your box certainly helps your case. It -- all of it -- ‘tis still rather wonderful and strange, though.”
“There are more things in heaven and earth, Edward, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”
“You’ve read Hamlet?”
“I’m an actor by trade. Of course I’ve read it. And by read it, I mean that Shakespeare’s works were forced on me in every English class in school.”
That gets an exasperated chuckle out of him. She can’t help the smile that forms; she really enjoys the sound of his laughter. For as much as he tries to play up the stoic, unfeeling pirate captain, he seems to lose the battle whenever she’s around. “It’s all right, you know, if you don’t believe me. I know this is kinda crazy.”
The humor on his face is there one second and then gone the next.
“’Tis… not that.”
“Then what is it?”
No answer comes.
“Charlie was right,” she teases, knocking her elbow into his. “You’re really not great at changing the subject.”
That gets her a snort of amusement, but nothing more. Before she can prod, a cold gust of wind sings through the rigging, whipping up past them and sending her hair into disarray. Despite the residual heat of the sun-warmed railing, Elena can’t help but shiver, and hugs herself to conserve what little heat she can. Edward wraps an arm around her waist and pulls her close, his hand running up and down her back with gentle strokes. Her heartbeat quickens at the gesture, now familiar since he helped pull her up out of the raging waters.
“I apologize, Miss McTavish. I shouldn’t have kept you up here so long. You should go down to the galley -- you missed dinner, after all, while on watch. Can’t have you on a chameleon diet. And you’ll be much warmer down there.”
Elena shakes her head and reaches up, placing a hand on the warm plane of his chest where his shirt parts. His breath catches under her palm.
“No, I’m alright. I’m glad you were the next on lookout duty, actually. I wanted to ask you a question.”
“Ask away.”
“Do you really think the Admiral cares about getting his property back?” Edward’s body tenses under her touch; she shoves down the wiry ball of nerves in her stomach at the movement. “That lieutenant I ran into, he didn’t mention anything about--”
“Need I remind you of what I promised on our walk from the mayor’s estate?” he interrupts.
Confusion sweeps through her. Elena quirks her head to the side, trying to connect the dots between that conversation and her current fears. “You are no man’s property,” he spits, his voice gone rough from obvious fury. “And for as long as you are here, you are under my protection.”
The wave of realization hits her.
“I was, uh, talking about the compass.”
“Ah.” He sucks in a deep breath and lets it out. The hard line of his shoulders softens. “I… see.”
“But it was interesting, to say the least, to see you puff up like that. I’m sure it would make any other lass swoon. I mean,” she lifts her hand from his chest and holds her thumb and pointer finger inches apart, “I was this close.”
He rolls his eyes at her. “Aye, I’d pay top coin to see you swoon.”
“I can think of a few things you could do to make that happen,” she teases.
Edward takes her hand in his and drops a kiss to her knuckles. Before that familiar swell of longing in her chest can rise, though, he shakes his head.
“I will not risk it.”
“You would sail your ship into every storm across the Caribbean, but this,” Elena glances down to their entwined hands, “you won’t take a chance on?”
“That should tell you how serious I am.”
“I can’t follow your line of thinking, Edward. Do you think the Admiral will suddenly know? That he’s some omniscient god, overseeing all that goes on?”
“People are fond of gossip.”
“Who? What people? Because if it’s the crew, I trust them with my life, just like you do, and I don’t--”
“Not them. But anywhere we’d go, we’d have eyes on us -- eyes that could report back to the Admiral. And if we were -- there would be no world where I wouldn’t want to have you by my side.”
“But we--”
“Jealousy is a hideous trait to have, but I’m afraid I would not be able to stop it from affecting my actions. I’ve seen the people at port, the way they flirt with you.” Edward frowns at the dark sea ahead. “You don’t think I wouldn’t challenge anyone who tried to -- to woo you? I would not be able to stand idle while--”
Elena barks out the short laugh she’s been holding in. “What is so humorous?”
“Because you already do all that.”
Self-awareness rushes in like the tide, flooding his brain. His jaw goes slack, as does his hand in hers, before he collects himself. Elena feels pinned under those eyes of his. She watches them drop down to her lips before returning to her gaze.
“May I?”
“You really have to ask?”
“Aye, of course.”
He starts to say more -- probably a long-winded explanation about his gentlemanly values -- but she’s waited too long for this to be delayed another second. Elena leans up and silences him with a kiss. He doesn’t turn and flee, like she expects; when he breaks the kiss for air, she gets but a second to collect her own breath before his lips return to hers. She hums her encouragement when he lets go of her hand to sink his fingers into the loose wave of her hair.
His lips, cold from the ocean breeze, warm under hers. Elena finds that his kisses are exactly like him: brash, and quick, and intoxicating, with the slightest hint of steel. When she draws her tongue against him, she can taste spiced rum and saltwater. He growls from the deep well of his throat when she bites down on his heavy, bottom lip. His arm cinches tight around her waist and hauls her against him; their bodies meet in a delicious roll of pressure.
“Miss -- Miss McTavish--”
“Elena,” she corrects, her hand skating up his back, searching for purchase so she can drag him closer.
“Elena.”
His breath is hot against her skin where his lips trace the line of her jaw. The world dips and sways suddenly, the railing digging into her back. She clings to him when the sensation of weightlessness shoots up her spine.
It takes her a moment to register that it's only the ship underneath them, crossing over a rough wave. Concerned that she’ll end up pitching over to the deck eighty feet below, he picks her up and spins until her back meets the mast. Elena reaches for the lapels of his coat, but he’s faster, and snatches her hands in one of his and pins them above her head.
“I have dreamed of this,” he murmurs, skimming the pads of his callused fingers along her throat, his mouth trailing behind with fervent, open-mouthed kisses.
She swallows back the moan that wants to form. A shiver dances under her skin, now damp from his attention.
“I have too,” she admits with a sigh. “Except mine deserve an NC-17 rating.”
“You know I don’t understand what that--”
“I certainly fuckin’ can!” someone shouts from below.
The wonderful spell they’ve found themselves under shatters. The voice might as well have been a gunshot, with the way Edward leaps back from her. Elena mourns the loss of his mouth on her as she adjusts her waistcoat and smooths down her hair.
Flipping and tumbling their way across the deck, Ada and Ax continue their argument about who can reach the top of the main mast first. Charlie, Jonas, and Ginny trail behind them, wagering their bets. Maggie’s thick accent carries across the ship, telling them off for circusing about, and ordering them to stay away from the rigging.
It’s not as if their tryst could have continued much longer, Elena considers, given that the crow’s nest wasn’t exactly a secluded spot. The twins make a good show of pouting, but eventually head for their quarters, Ginny giggling as Ax twirls her round.
“Maggie deserves a raise,” Elena tells him.
“Because she knows how dangerous ‘tis for them to be climbing about with no light?”
“Because she knows they would’ve caught us up here, making out like a pair of horny teenagers.”
“Ah. You--” his hand lifts in an aborted move towards her before he redirects it through his tousled hair. “--you should get down to the galley. I’m sure Henry is waiting on you, by now.”
“Okay,” she says, because it’s the only thing to say. Swinging down onto the rope ladder, Elena starts to descend but pauses, peeking over the railing to catch his eye. “But don’t think this conversation between us is over.”
“Aye.” A wry grin flickers across his face. “I know much better than to assume that.”
+
Edward is right -- about the food, at least.
When she makes it down to the galley, Henry sits her down with a covered plate. Well, as covered as it can be with the dirty rag he’s thrown over it. She’s learned not to make a fuss, though, especially to the man cooking the food.
“Thanks for keeping it warm for me.”
“Took ye long enough,” Henry huffs, but makes a show of looking over his shoulder at her. His face, streaked with ash that he sifts with a makeshift poker, makes it easier to spot his sly grin. “Find somethin’ interestin’ up there, hmm?”
“I was distracted by the view.” Which is the truth, although she doesn’t include that Edward’s lips were part of said view.
“Nothin’ beats a clear night at sea, to be sure.” Swinging the stove door shut with a satisfied grunt, he jerks his chin towards a small barrel on the nearby shelf. “Charlie made some punch, if ye want more’n water to wash yer food down.”
She shakes her head; she’d made the mistake once of drinking their ‘punch.’ It put the jungle juice she drank back at college parties to shame. Charlie now called it Caribbean moonshine, thanks to Elena and her fiery round of swearing after taking a sip.
With the comforting noise of Henry’s humming as he cleans up, she takes a seat on the tin-lined floor and eats her dinner. Not for the first time, she notes Maggie’s touch in the confined space. Fitted across the shelves are iron bars to keep the contents from taking a tumble in rough waters. Tied round the necks of bottles with twine, scraps of parchment label each oil and spice in her spidery handwriting.
“I worked up a new dessert for ye to try, if ye’d like.” He produces a bowl of something that might come out the other end of her garbage disposal back home. Elena inspects the concoction with interest. “I boiled some hard tack in a little bit o’ rum and brown sugar, and then boiled mangoes with some sugar to mix in with it.”
“Ooh, like a compote?”
“Aye, sorta.”
In another world, three hundred some-odd years in the future, she could easily imagine Henry with a cafe or food truck, selling ‘deconstructed desserts’ and other kitschy items. Scooping up a sample, she’s surprised at the delicious flavor of it. The enjoyment on her face must be obvious, because a grin appears behind the ash. “Good, init?”
“Really good! Except, and this is going to sound weird, but maybe add a pinch of lime juice? I think it would really bring out the sweetness of the mango more.”
“Yer right, lass. That might do. And then maybe I can finally get the others to try it.”
“I’ll vouch for you,” she promises after sampling another portion. “Unless I die of food-poisoning tonight, and then you’re shit outta luck.”
Henry shakes his head and huffs out a laugh. “Edward’d have my head first.”
“Did he at least try it?”
“I doubt he would’ve, if he’d come down for dinner at all. Too busy broodin’ in his cabin, I suspect.”
Elena hands off her empty plate when he motions for it. Curiosity, instead of hunger, gnaws at her insides.
“Can I take this with me?” she gestures to the bowl in her hands.
“Aye, have the rest of it -- and see if ye can convince the cap’n to get in a few bites, hmm?”
She doesn’t bother asking him how he knows where she’s going; the rest of the crew isn’t as blind as Edward claims them to be. “But if ye break it, yer buyin’ me a new one.”
“Deal. Thanks, Henry!”

Elena climbs up to the deck carrying her pilfered bowl.
From where she’s manning the wheel, Charlie throws her a two-fingered salute from the bridge. High overhead, Jonas wishes her goodnight from his post in the crow’s nest. Grateful that she won’t have to try holding onto the bowl while climbing up the rope ladder, she continues on towards the stern.
“What can I do for you, Miss McTavish?” Edward asks before his door is fully open.
“How’d you know it was me?”
He shoots her a deadpan look. Moving aside to allow her entry, he shuts the door behind her.
“No one else would dare bother a captain’s sleep, lest there was an emergency.”
“Henry told me you skipped dinner, so I brought you something to eat.” Elena gestures to the bowl in her hand. Stepping close to give it a thorough once-over, Edward grimaces.
“I will take my chances with starvation.”
“Hey,” she scolds, “it isn’t that bad.”
He does a double-take between her and the food. “You ate it?”
“In college, I once ate stale Wheat Thins drizzled with an expired bottle of honey mustard. And before you say anything,” she holds up a hand to stop the statement she knows is coming, “I know you don’t know what either of those are, but trust me: it was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever eaten.”
“And this bowl of slop is better than that?”
“If it weren’t, would I be forcing you to eat it?”
He mutters something under his breath, too faint for her to catch, but seems to concede. After a brief hesitation, he takes the bowl and spoon she offers him and shovels in a mouthful of the mixture. His eyebrows pinch down at the initial taste, and then lift in bewilderment.
“Not bad, right?”
“Not… horrible, no.” He sounds just as surprised as he looks. “This is one dessert of Henry’s that I may live to tell the tale of.”
“Good. But that’s not the only reason I came.”
“Aye, would it have anything to do with continuing our conversation from earlier?”
“All that time, Robert was accusing me of being a witch, but here you are, able to read minds.”
Edward gives a soft snort at that, collapsing into his chair. The desk in front of him is littered with maps and parchments and various trinkets. Elena crosses the room and comes round the side of the desk, taking in the starry view from the windows. Out of the corner of her eye, she watches the spoon swirl round and round in the gruel as he assesses her.
“Ye would’ve been a good jester, Miss McTavish, in a previous life.”
“It’s just us,” she murmurs. “You can drop the surname.”
“No, I can’t.” The grief in his voice is as clear as a bell. “In another life, yes, but here--”
“--here,” she interrupts, turning at the waist to study him, “in your cabin, alone. Not even then?”
Edward sets the bowl down onto the desk and glares at the floorboards. “We can’t let our emotions cloud our judgement.”
Folding her arms across her chest, she lifts a single brow at his attempt to backtrack.
“Says the man hell-bent on playing cat-and-mouse with an enemy to exact revenge on him for something he clearly feels guilty about? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.”
His gaze shoots up to her, those dark eyes of his flashing in the candlelight. “That phrase I indeed do know.”
“Then you should know that you can’t kiss me like the world is ending, and then shoe-horn me back into a neat, little box, Captain Mortemer.” Elena doesn’t see it coming, she’ll admit that. She’s too busy ranting at the starry night, too pissed off with the man beside her, too afraid she’ll lose the runaway train of her thoughts if she focuses on him and sees all the emotions he claims to be above, all that longing and heartache and desire, painted across his face. “Since you’re so insistent on using surnames to avoid--”
In the second it takes her to draw a breath, Edward surges out of his chair and crosses to her. In the next, his lips are on hers. That passion she saw the mere beginnings of up in the crow’s nest roars with intensity. He cups her cheek and tilts her head just so, deepening the kiss; she can taste the mango’s sweetness on his tongue.
All at once, he pulls away. She mourns the loss of him with a quiet moan.
“My -- my apologies. I’m--”
Before he can worry himself into the ground with another fit of propriety, Elena holds up a finger to his lips.
“Stop being so polite and kiss me again.”
That familiar grin breaks free, lighting up his face with a naked delight that sends her heart racing.
“As you command.”
His mouth claims hers again. A muscled arm circles her waist, one hand splaying wide across her back to pull her close. She comes easily, readily into his embrace. His shirt twists in her hand where she holds on for dear life, parting for a quick breath of air, before diving back in. His other hand strokes a molten path up from her waist, brushing over the beaded point of her nipple. The moan she releases is louder this time, wanting more than anything for him to do it again.
For all his faults, he’s no fool. Sure, he takes his sweet time with it, dragging his fingertips along her collarbone and up into her hair to push the blonde curtain back, but he eventually makes his way back down. Cupping her breast, his thumb rubs circles against her -- even through the layers of lace and cotton, Elena’s breath catches at the immediate flare of pleasure.
Emboldened by her response, Edward backs her up against the cool, glass panes, his mouth leaving hers to suckle at her throat. Elena tips her head back, her lips parting as his stubble prickles against her skin. His thumb works steadily over her and she’s dizzy with the primal need to have him.
Braced by the window behind her, she hooks a leg up and around his ass. He needs no more encouragement to invade the space she’s created, his hips rocking tentatively against hers. Frustrated with the buffer of all her layers, Edward retreats to the buckle at her waist, his eyes searching hers.
“May I?”
Elena swallows to free the words from her throat, but they won’t come; instead, she nods her permission. The belt hits the floor with a thwack. Her waistcoat comes next, which she tosses off with a flourish. Edward captures her hands and tugs off her gloves. Spotting the gleam in his eye, Elena distracts him with a roll of her hips and frees her hands, chuckling when he mutters a curse at her.
“You’re a cunning lass.”
“I can’t wait around for you to strip me of my garments.” Her fingers making quick work of the corset’s laces. “Besides,” she drawls, “between the two of us, I’m probably the one with more experience taking off a lady’s corset.”
His eyebrow raises in response to her claim. The image of her and another tangled together plagues him; his jaw clenches tight at the thought.
“That may be so,” he growls, reaching down for his own shirt and tearing it off, “but it won’t be their names you’ll be calling soon enough.”
Her blood flash boils at the promise. She grabs the hem of her blouse and yanks it up over her head.
“Jealousy is a good look on you,” she teases, tracing the line of his jaw with her fingernail.
Seizing her hand, he laces their fingers together and presses a kiss to her wrist. Goosebumps raise across her skin as his mouth trails from the tendons in her forearm to the curve of her shoulder. Nudging her bra strap down, Edward continues his trek to the rosy flush blooming across her chest.
Not one to play the passive participant, Elena cards a hand through his shoulder-length locks and nudges him down. He takes the cue and moves further south; she whimpers at the wet heat of his mouth closing over the lace of her bra.
“God, stop teasing and--” her gasp echoes across the cabin at the sharp bite of his teeth closing around her nipple. His tongue darts out, soothing any hurt, and turns to lave at her other breast.
Once she regains motor control, Elena unlatches her bra and flings it to what might possibly be the furthest reaches of the universe -- she doesn’t care, as long as Edward will keep doing wondrous things to her with that mouth of his.
“Miss McTavish,” he rumbles, tilting his head to run his stubble along her naked flesh, enjoying the ragged, little noises she makes. “You are well on your way to looking thoroughly ravished.”
Her wandering hand smooths over the tight curve of his ass and grabs hold. She smirks as he bucks up into her.
“Then get on with it, Captain.”
Deft fingers pop the button on her pants and dip down below the waistband. Elena stretches up and rests her bare shoulders against the glass, tipping her hips up to encourage his exploration. She cries out when he slides two fingers inside of her. He gives her a moment to adjust to the intrusion, nuzzling the curve where her neck meets her shoulder.
“I’ve long wondered,” he murmurs, his tongue skimming across the salty sweat of her skin, “what you taste like.”
At the sudden loss of his hand, Elena opens her eyes to tell him off for his teasing -- but her throat goes dry when he brings his fingers to his mouth and sucks them clean. It’s a long moment before her world centers on its axis once more for her to ask.
“How do I taste?”
“Decadent,” he growls.
Crowding against her, he props himself up with one hand spread wide against the window above her head, while his other draws a wet trail down her belly. A short grunt of pleasure sounds from both of them when he slips back inside her.
Elena reaches a shaky hand up to hook around his arm, her nails digging into the muscles there. Arousal clogs her veins like molasses -- slow and syrupy and sinfully sweet. The movement of her hips turns clumsy and erratic. Sweat beads across her forehead as his fingers work her open, the heel of his hand circling her with delicious pressure.
“Edward -- fuck, I--” she cries out.
“Will you come for me?” he asks, his gaze snapping to hers. Desire clouds his eyes, the brown irises eclipsed by the black of his pupils.
“Please--” he cuts off her begging with a kiss.
“Will you?”
“Yes,” she answers with a gasp.
Covering his hand with her own to guide him exactly where she likes, she stretches up for another kiss and grinds down against his hand. The heat inside of her reaches its critical point, flaring to life and scorching through her bloodstream. Clenching tight around him, her hips convulse as she rides out the quake of her orgasm.
Edward slides his fingers out, dropping a kiss to the crown of her head when she whines with oversensitivity. He brings her into his arms, smoothing a hand over her hair as her body shudders with the last of its tremors.
“Fuck,” she sighs, a delirious sort of giggle bubbling up. “Well, how do I look now?”
“Exquisite.”
Leaning down, he captures her lips with a kiss. She blames the blush from her recent orgasm.
“I think it’s my turn, then, to ravish you.”
“We don’t have to--”
Elena silences his gallant protest with a heady kiss, raking one hand through his hair. Her other runs along his side, where she hooks two fingers into his waistband and yanks him closer. Continuing down, she runs the flat of her palm against the obvious sign of his arousal. Edward groans into her mouth; he ropes an arm around her waist and carries her to the desk. With a wide sweep of his arm, he knocks documents and equipment to the floor before depositing her atop it.
“Careful!”
He jerks back at her yelp, casting a worried eye over her form. “Have I harmed you?”
“No, no -- I promised Henry I wouldn’t break his bowl.”
Edward rolls his eyes and grabs the dinnerware before she can reach for it, then tosses it to the floor.
“I will buy him a new one when we stop at the next-- why are you laughing?”
Elena shakes her head at him, avoiding any explanation by dragging his mouth back onto hers. It’s a rather effective technique, as she’s finding out tonight. Their remaining clothes join the messy pile on the floor. Edward huffs a laugh at her threat of injury if he rips her underwear, but seems to heed her words and takes care to drop them onto the desk. Moving into the space between her thighs, he grabs two handfuls of her ass and drags her closer. The soft giggle that sounds from her delights him; he leans down and savors the taste of it on her lips.
Elena’s hand wanders over his stomach and down the trail of coarse hair to take hold of him. He thrusts into her touch with a grunt, choking on an inhale when she twists her wrist on the next upstroke.
“May I have you?” he manages to rasp.
“You may,” she purrs, and guides him to her entrance.
With a surge of his hips, he plunges into the slick heat of her. At her gasp of encouragement, he slips out and then back inside, grinding his teeth against the clench of her. Pleasure is a ripple on the surface, building into a wave that banks higher and higher as they move together. The world outside slips from its perch, losing what little control it has over the confines of the cabin. There is only the two of them, lost in the frantic rocking of their bodies.
A shameless staccato of moans falls from her lips as he fucks her. Edward wraps a fist around a length of hair and pulls her head back, exposing the long line of her throat; he nips at her pulse point and then at her bottom lip, swallowing her cries of pleasure.
“If you shout any louder, the whole ocean’ll hear you,” he playfully scolds.
Spotting her opening, Elena tightens her legs around his hips and digs her heels into his lower back. Retaliation sings its sweet tune as she jerks him forward on top of her, the both of them crashing back onto the desk.
“Don’t underestimate me.”
“Nay, I would never.”
Edward props himself up with one hand next to her head, his other clamped firmly around her thigh as he drives into her, the angle somehow that much sweeter. “God, but yer a pretty sight, spread underneath me.”
It’s impossible -- that she’s here, that the desk underneath her is scattered with papers that would be considered treasure in her time, would be framed in a museum and ogled by historians. A quill digs into her spine and she’s certain they’ve spilled a pot of ink, but Elena can’t find it in herself to care. If she’s lost in time, then at least she has Edward to guide her through it; her beacon of light, keeping her adrift, illuminating her way through the confusing, treacherous world she’s been transported to.
“Elena,” he gasps, his chest gleaming with sweat in the candlelight. “Elena.”
His hold slips from her thigh and down to where they’re joined, rubbing quick circles against her bundle of nerves. Whatever he’s asking of her, she gladly surrenders. The wave of her climax rushes over her, flooding her veins and drowning her with euphoria.
The sight of her lost in the throes of pleasure is an anchor; he sinks.
Edward curses with his release, collapsing beside her onto the desk. Their sweat-slick bodies heave as they catch their breath. Something catches flame in Elena’s chest and simmers there when he folds her into his embrace, his palm cradling her head against his chest. His heart thunders against her temple.
She sees no better time than now, lying naked in his arms.
“I have a question.”
He hums with what little strength he can gather for her to continue.
“When we were up in the crow’s nest, after discussing our love of Shakespeare--”
“--as I recall,” he interjects, “I am the only one who willingly read his works.”
Elena makes a waving motion with her hand, which would prove more effective if his fingers weren’t laced with hers.
“Whatever. What I want to know is, when I said that it was okay if you didn’t believe me, why that made you…?”
“Disquieted?” he finishes for her.
“Yeah.”
She can feel the weight of the sigh that empties out of him.
“Because I do believe you. Your mannerisms, your accent, your magic box with its…?”
“Pictures.”
“Pictures, aye. Everything about you should not fit here. But it does, you do. You’ve adapted remarkably well, given what’s happened to you. You are a strong woman, Elena.”
“I would blush, but I’m too tired from our activities.”
He brushes a kiss against the crown of her head and huffs out a laugh.
“Yet, despite how well you’ve adapted, I know that this is not your home. Your true home, that is. I promise you, once we stop the Admiral, I will do everything in my power to send you back home. But, I confess, I will be… terribly upset to see you go.”
Tears prickle at the corners of her eyes; she shuts them against the fading candlelight.
“Me too.”
His palm skims up and down the soft skin of her back, marred here and there by the cuts and scrapes from life aboard his ship.
“Stay.”
For a terrifying moment, Elena isn’t sure what he means -- and is terrified all the more that she isn’t sure if she wants to return home, at least not so soon. Realizing that he’s probably (hopefully) meaning for the night, she musters up a reply.
“The crew will talk.”
Edward scoffs. “They do little else.”
Her shoulders shake from her smothered laughter.
“Is this what passes for pillow talk in the eighteenth century?” she wonders aloud, making a show of stretching and enjoying the noise of interest he makes. “But yeah, okay, I’ll stay. I might even make it worth your while.”
“Of that, I have no doubt.”

There’s a few slang terms from 17th/18th century and various pirate research sprinkled throughout. The USS Spiegel Grove is a real artificial reef, located off the shore of Key Largo.
