Drug Use and Behavior Problems Among Youth

I chose to work with the NESARC dataset (National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions) because it contains rich data on substance use, mental health, and personal experiences across different age groups. I selected this dataset because I want to explore how drug use among young people may be linked to behavioral problems.

How I Chose My Topic: As someone passionate about public health, I’ve been noticing a worrying trend, many young people today are getting involved with drugs at an early age. This is not just about addiction—I’m also concerned about how drug use may lead to fights, school issues, and problems at home. That’s why I decided to explore the connection between youth drug use and behavioral issues.

Literature Review

To support my research question, I reviewed two academic articles related to youth drug use and behavior problems.

1. Disruptive Behavior Disorders and Substance Use in Adolescents

🔗 Clark & Winters, 2000 – Taylor & Francis This article explains that many teens who use drugs also show disruptive behaviors like fighting or skipping school. These behaviors may appear before or along with drug use, and they make addiction harder to treat. The authors recommend therapy and early interventions.

2. Substance Abuse in Young People

🔗 McArdle & McKenzie, 2011 – Cambridge.org This article looks at how substance use in teens often leads to behavior and mental health problems. It also talks about how many prevention programs fail due to poor implementation and follow-up. It recommends stronger, evidence-based approaches for helping young people.

They contain the information upon which reliability assessments such as test-retest or equivalent-form questions may be made, and they are used in follow-up validation of respondents' participation in the survey.

Did you know that we received over 800 usable responses to a massive survey on diastasis recti we conducted a few years ago? The results actually correlated many things like incontinence, back pain, self-image, mental health, and constipation to diastasis.

You see, theories on how to address “ab gaps” abound! I’ve got quite a few of my own, and so does my research partner my research partner, Grainne Donnelly of @absolute.physio

One of my favorites from Grainne is that DRA is less like sliding glass doors and more like French double-doors.

How can her diastasis theory apply to your core?

Well, Instead of thinking about the two sides of our abs sliding toward our midline, we can think of French doors closing. Instead of visualizing our abs sliding shut at our navel, we can imagine a gathering inward.

This is a day late but I promise I will start posting regularly :)

For my Human Development class, we had to choose an injury/maladie (I can’t seem to find the right word in English, sorry about that) that affects the brain and the overall development of a human being. Examples were depression, anxiety, and a few others and I decided to choose PTSD! I know that PTSD is very common in soldiers and the like but I also wanted to raise awareness kind of, I guess, that PTSD exists in people that aren’t soldiers. These civilians (I am trying to refrain myself from saying “normal people” because soldiers are still human beings) suffer from PTSD because they have seen domestic violence/abuse, have been raped, suffered from other types of abuse and a lot more scenarios that are often dismissed as “they are exaggerating”. I do not have PTSD because I am lucky to be raised in a caring environment where I have the support I need but I know that is not the case for many, especially those that are stuck at home and feeling unsafe during these turbulent times when school/going out/friends were their only escape. If you ever need someone to talk to/want someone to listen, I am always open to talk :)
