Camile's bound and determined to do a secret gift exchange among Icarus Base personnel. Everett can't figure out what anyone should get. David knows exactly what everybody ought to get; he just doesn't see the point. And Nick is still an unsolved variable.
(wordcount: 3066, rating: T)
“I don’t see why Camile needs to bother with Secret Santa,” says Everett, later. “It’s not like anyone actually wants to do this. Right?” He looks at David and hesitates. “...Right?” “You’re telling me you’re not excited about the possibility of getting your coworker a gift they’re going to hate?” David stirs his decaf coffee. “No way.” Everett breathes a sigh of relief. Even after all this time, he still cares about David’s approval and opinion. That’s a difference between them right there. David doesn’t care about anyone’s approval, except for his own exactingly high standards. Trouble is, he holds everyone else to those standards, too.

I can't believe Jouer ses cartes by laurie_ky is finally over. Nine years in the making. 344,039 words. This fic was so hard to read at first (it was written in response to another one where Rush is gang raped by the Lucian Alliance), but the author delivered on her intent to make things better. And the ending nailed it, with a surprise that I did not see coming and all the fluff anyone could wish for.

Find the word tag
Thanks for the tag, @annwayne! 😄 My words are capture, sky, abandon, and sound.
Tagging: @fortunatetragedy @wolgerrswraith @sentfromwolves @etoilesombre @the-golden-comet to find the words option, confine, drain, and attack in your WIPs!
Capture - i am a prisoner just like you 2x04 Pathogen (SGU - Vampire AU)
He backed off quickly. Too quickly as it turned out, his weakened state making him dizzy enough to overbalance, glad for a moment there wasn't actually anyone else here  to see him fall on his ass. There was a chittering from the assembled aliens, but it didn't sound as if they were laughing at him. In fact, one of them stepped forwards and crouched, just like Scott had done to offer the one they'd captured food. Telford couldn't tell if the alien in front of him was the same one - they all looked the same to him. It reached out a hand, feather-floating slow, long spindly fingers extending forwards, though it stopped short of touching him. Feeling as if he was in E.T. - or possibly some fancy religious painting - Telford mirrored the movement. His first impression was that the alien's skin was quite brittle - easy to snap, his mind supplied. His second was an image of himself overlaid in his vision, looking weak and shaky and out of it and he snatched his hand back, berating himself viciously. He'd already decided they communicated telepathically. What the hell was he doing letting one of them touch him?!
Sky - Aliens made them do it (SGU)
A blue sky coalesced in his vision, blurry and too bright by far, causing his eyes to immediately begin to water. In contrast his throat was so dry it hurt to breathe. It took far too much effort to turn his head to the side, a dull pounding permeating his skull as the unconscious form of Colonel Young swam into view. Rush had seen the man in some pretty terrible states - bruised and bloody, exhausted and driven half insane by Destiny's simulations - but he'd never been this pale before, his lips cracked to the point of bleeding from a lack of moisture. "Colonel?" His voice was barely audible, scratchy and cardboard stiff.
Abandon - Skirting The Vague Outline Of A Boundary (SGA)
Sheppard allowed his head to fall backwards until it was cushioned on the edge of the bed, wondering how close he was to losing his sanity for good. "So..." Rodney prodded. "Cuddling?" Pretty damn close, as it turned out. "Why?" he asked, resisting the urge to pull the pillow he was using as an armrest in front of his body to use as a makeshift shield. "Ummm... Why cuddle? Well..." Rodney scratched his chin in the same manner as he did when slaving over the ZPMs. "Warm. Big plus. Nice. If it's with the right person. Comfortable, relaxing, again only if it's with the right person. You can't just start cuddling with random people and expect it to go well, you know? Imagine if one day I just walked into the lab and hugged Zelenka." Sheppard snorted. "He'd think you'd finally lost it." "Or that I was dying... He always thinks I'm dying if I'm nice to him." "That's because you usually are," Sheppard teased. The further they moved away from the Kissing Incident the less panicked he became. Maybe they could just ignore it and pretend it had never happened, like Rodney had said. Sheppard was very good at pretending. "I think he's got some issues in that regard," Rodney announced snippily. "Abandonment maybe. Touch starved."
Sound - Your Own Worst Enemy (SGU)
"Do you ever think about what they did to me?" David asks suddenly. Young is so caught off guard that he answers even though the correct social response is silence, "Yes. All the time." David nods, a single jerk of his head. The man's never brought this subject up before, even though Young knows he must have been grilled about it by the shrinks back home. He wonders if he should have asked - about the Alliance, about being undercover for so long, about why David had been caught, what had happened after - but it's an unwritten military rule that you don't mention those sorts of things - torture, injuries, loss of fellows in battle - unless the person to have suffered through it brings it up first. "I think…" David says slowly, as if the words don't come easy, "It would have been better to kill me." Young inhales sharply. "Don't say that." He means for the words to sound sure and convincing. What he gets instead is pleading, trying to dress itself up as insistence. "It would have been kinder. Instead you left me like this." David sounds very far away. "And now it's happening again."

Have you seen much of Stargate SG-1? Cause Desmond needs an actual good dad other than his ancestors and I think Jack would be a good one for both of them. Especially if it wasn't too long after his son's death.
Maybe a way this would happen would be that Minerva feels bad about either him dying or just being 1 upped by Juno and gets SGC's attention somehow to avoid the flare another way
Stargate SG-1 is one of my most favorite scifi series (and I have a soft spot for the original Stargate movie)!
Okay, so for this one, we need to setup the timeline first.
As far as we know, the Stargate movie is still the canon prequel of Stargate SG-1 (even though a running gag is Kurt!Jack only has one ‘l’ and might have been a different dude) which means that Jack lost his son and became part of the ‘first’ Stargate project around 1996.
At that point, Desmond would be 8 years old.
So, for this to work, we’ll tweak the AC timeline a bit and we’ll use Minerva to set it up. Minerva realized in 2012 that Desmond, as he is right now, would not let the world burn so she uses what time she has left to change the calculations. For this one, let’s assume all Isus is either a Goa'uld or Tok’ra but the distinction between the two started after the Solar Flare on Earth when many of them left Earth to escape the Solar Flare. This is also how humans started to be ‘dispersed’ in many corners of the galaxy.
With that brief explanation out of the way, Juno’s imprisonment would actually be her actual parasitical body being confined in the Grand Temple, connected to the POE network (and the Grey) and reviving her means Juno using Desmond as her host.
Back to Minerva’s plan, she realized that for Desmond to fully understand why it’s better for him if he let the world burn, he must understand the true threat of her species so she pushed forward a new calculation where an 8 year old Desmond sneaked out of the Farm by hitching a ride with one of the Assassins on his way for a ‘milk run’.
He just meant to look around for a bit then sneak back into the pickup but he got distracted by all the strange things he had never before seen. He bumps into Jack who had just returned from the Stargate mission and is trying to take a break and Jack notices the many bruises such a small boy has.
At this point, Desmond knows that he can’t say anything about the Assassins and Templars but he’d already started to think that it’s all bullshit. Still, he keeps his mouth shut because he’s scared that his dad would punish him.
That only raises more alarm for Jack and it doesn’t help that Desmond is around Charlie’s age. So he takes the kid to the police station because that’s the right thing to do (in his eyes) but he keeps checking up on him, even after Desmond gets placed into child services’ custody.
By that point, the Assassins know Desmond is missing and they find him but their ‘rescue attempt’ is thwarted because Jack was there for the first time. This would be the part where Jack and Desmond had started to form some kind of bond and Desmond has slipped quite a bit that Jack believes he’s from a secretive cult that might be training child soldiers for nefarious reasons (also, being called an Assassin Brotherhood? Always suspicious).
At the end, Jack adopts Desmond because of their bond and Desmond starts living with him. Because the Assassins haven’t given up on Desmond though, this meant Jack needed to keep a close eye on him. That’s when Stargate Command gave him an offer he couldn’t exactly refuse. In exchange of him leading the flagship team, Desmond could stay in the most secure military base in America while Jack is offworld.
Unorganized Notes:
So, in this scenario, Desmond would grow up more like Wes from Star Trek (but not as annoying).
Desmond would also grow up having Carter and Daniel as his aunt/uncle and the research team would be more or less his teachers (although it's more of a self study thing). He’d have an interest in anything he doesn’t know because of how the Farm lacked such diversity of information.
He would also serve as some kind of son surrogate for Teal'c who teaches him their way and fighting style. Desmond enjoys it because Teal'c is a kinder teacher than William Miles.
His favorite time will always be fishing with his dad though.
Let’s be honest, Jack got swindled considering how many times Stargate Command got attacked/infiltrated/had a bad day but, at that point, Jack trusts Hammond to protect his son when he’s not there. Also, the Assassins can’t get to Stargate Command which is a plus.
To be fair, the Brotherhood stopped around 2000 because that’s when Cross killed the mentor so the Great Purge was in full swing (at the same time, Stargate Command is busy with the whole ‘Russians have their own Stargate’ thing).
The Isu DNA is more or less related to the Ancient DNA in some form or another. Desmond also has an easy time understanding off-world tech (of Goa'uld origin or inspired by Goa'uld tech) but everyone just assumes it’s because he likes to listen to Carter and Daniel.
Would Desmond still get kidnapped by Abstergo at this one? Probably, considering, 2012 is around the time of SGU which meant Jack is out of the Stargate Command (sorta? Kinda?) and Desmond would be old enough that Jack would let him take his own path. Maybe he’s in the military, maybe he’s part of Stargate Command. Either way, Abstergo would have a harder but not impossible time to take him.
You know what would be funny? If Minerva’s end game had always been for Desmond to be offworld by the time the Solar Flare hits Earth. I mean, it’s highly possible that Stargate Command would find out about the Solar Flare earlier (especially if maybe a friendly like the Asgard told them about it) but a sad ending would be that Minerva’s end game was for Desmond to never learn about the Grand Temple. Maybe even make sure he can’t get back to Earth in time by ensuring the calculations would push him to be part of the Icarus Project and becomes one of the highest-ranking officer stranded in Destiny (also, since he has Ancient DNA, this means SGU’s people would have an easier time in Destiny… sorta)

They sleep out on the observation deck, huddled in the corner where they can watch the magnificent colors of FTL Destiny is rushing through but can't be seen - at least, right away - if someone walks in, perhaps, having come to the same conclusion they did, that the deck is the most suitable place for spending one's night.
They sleep sitting up, leaning against each other - both seeking and providing support at the same time - arms linked, wrapped in the blanket Chloe had the foresight to bring with her.
Chloe's head is pillowed on Rush's shoulder, her free hand holding onto his forearm as if he's the only thing that keeps her from drifting away - she nodded off first and the same nightmares that have been plaguing them both since their... stay at the blue aliens' ship must have tried to surface again because before long her breathing sped up and she clutched onto his arm with strength that might have actually left bruises, effectively drawing Nick's attention away from the calculations he'd been trying to work on. He watched her face contort with a grimace that was part confusion, part fear and - last but not least - pain and, though the very thought of those aliens terrified him out of his mind under any other circumstances, this time he just squeezed her hand lightly to let her know she was not alone and murmured into her hair, his voice tranquil on the surface but fierce with determination within: "It's alright. They're not gonna hurt you. I won't let them." Her features smoothed out then, no longer afraid, and with a sigh and a slight shift - an attempt to snuggle into his side even more than she already was - she finally fell into a deep and blissfully dreamless sleep.
Rush's temple is resting against the top of Chloe's head, his free hand still holding onto his notebook as he fell asleep, for the first time in forever ( if you count out the times he simply passed out because he'd been running on too little hours of sleep and too much stress - those could not be considered as healthy sleep he was in desperate need of by any stretch of imagination, no matter how stubborn the lead scientist was ), without noticing it - Chloe's warmth and weight against his side providing just enough comfort to soothe his overthinking mind and quench the nearly constant terror of falling again into the aliens' clutches so that he can rest.
They sleep, huddled under one blanket, leaning against supporting each other, their arms linked and hands intertwined, and for the first time in days, weeks, months - what feels like eternity, really - both Chloe and Rush sleep through the whole night, with no nightmares to terrorize them.

The passage of time is subjective when you're out in space. (rating: G; wordcount: 822; Rush/Telford, Telford & Camile)
Nick tilts his head to the side quizzically, skepticism written in his big brown eyes. But he accepts the piece of paper, and grips it tightly rather than unfolding it, which frustrates David beyond belief. “The 14th? What’s so special about that?” David can’t even think of anything to say. But he feels better about Camile’s unspoken chiding for his failure to pay attention to romantic milestones. He runs his hands through his hair, fending off a bit of amused despair. “You didn’t notice more people using the stones than usual?”

My magnum opus, the jewel of my Binderary round-up, the result of four months of hard work (that is to say, a lot of force applied over distance), the project affectionately known as The Motherfuckers (because it was rather unclear if I was going to finish these books or if they were going to be the end of me).
Force over Distance by cleanwhiteroom. It is currently also on AO3.
I was first introduced to this incredible story by a dear friend, who first sold me on actually watching SGU, and then said that they remember this fic since like 2011, which is always a promising sign. I went digging and found out I was in luck - the story was being rewritten and reuploaded on the author's blog. The next two weeks are described by the same friend as "one of the scariest moments in our cohabitation" as I'd spent literally every waking moment injecting the story directly into my eyeballs, and let me tell you, I'd not been doing a lot of sleeping at that time.
Then I gathered up my courage and reached out to CWR re: my burning desire to bind this story. And the rest, well. Let's dig into it, shall we?
This was my first time typesetting 540k words. Considering I tend to prefer larger font sizes for increased legibility, it was immediately obvious that this was going to be a multivolume project. I settled on three, as it's the relationship between three individuals that forms the core of the story.
I also knew I wanted to keep the typeset in black and white, but play around with light and dark a lot. So I did. One of the first design idea I actually had was the way I wanted to handle projected speech. Mental link between Young, Rush and Destiny is THE most vital part of the story, and I wanted to make it immediatly obvious. I also wanted to be able to take one glance at the page and tell how much of the action is actually just two guys staring each other down :) Hence the blackout effect of thoughts being represented as light over darkness.
I also wanted to preserve as much of my reading experience as possible. So I saved all the chapter quotes/summaries in the TOC, and hid the chapter content warnings in the frame of the gate that marks the beginning of each chapter. For most of the chapter the warnings stay the same, so after a while you stop really noticing them, but then you open a new chapter and see that the familiar shape of the words has changed, and get this UH-OH feeling. Which, I think is very much how it works in my design, because when the warnings change there's usually another line of text added.
For flashbacks and dream sequences I switched from italics to a lighter shade of gray. I woudn't say it's more legible per say, but it's in keeping with the overall light/dark theme.
There are instances of people using handwritten notes in the story. I collected more than a dozen of assorted handwriting fonts, with each character having their own "handwriting". So when, for example, someone begins writing in someone else's hand, you immediately know it.
The most insane, labor-intensive part of the typeset, however, was the way I decided to handle the Ancient translations. CWR's gone through the trouble of setting up hover-to-discover for it, which gives you a very different reading experience than, say, having the translations in the endnotes. So, naturally, I said to myself that I want to replicate that, and footnotes just won't do the trick. So. Every instance of Ancient in the text has an underlay of light gray Ancient script. And an OVERLAY of paper vellum with the translation printed in blue. Now, not to toot my own horn too much, but if looks SICK AS FUCK. You also MAYBE SHOULD NOT LIVE LIKE THIS. For the two copies of this work I had to cut up 10 sheets of vellum into strips, and then spent from 20 minutes to an hour per volume tipping the strips in their proper places. I then had to wear kinetic tape on both my hands to help with the joint pain. (It was worth it.)
Now for the title spread. It is also paper vellum that you see as soon as you turn the first page (the half-title), and see it covering the title of the book and author's name. And then you turn it. And the shields sing the matter wave of Destiny through the black. And yeah, I think that's very, very clever of me, actually.
Then, of course, were the endpapers. All 12 of them are unique abstract paintings done on black cardstock by hand with brush pens and correction tape, I scanned a sample of each set for posterity. All of them are my interpretations of characters' midscapes. For volume 1 I went with the fire wind of Rush's thoughts. Volume 2 was for Young, and I went for the reverse blackout poetry effect (because for all the mental talking they do, the unprojected thoughts are opaque to their counterparts) and all the loops, hairpins and blocks he does. Volume 3 is for the combination - Rush's fire wind, changing its color to match the circuitry pattern of Destiny's AI.
The rest, in comparison, is easy. All volumes are stitched with 3 strands of embroidery floss, a combination of black, blue and silvery-gray. The French double-core endbands are sewn in the same color scheme (though with a different shade of blue and gray switched for white for added contrast). The edges are painted and splattered to look like space.
The covers feature my (signature at this point, I guess) half-cloth river pattern, with the base being dark blue linen and the printed parts being Spitzer telescope images of the W51 star forge, Jack-O'-Lantern Nebula and the Eagle Nebula (courtesy of NASA), waxed by hand for added sheen. The spines are foiled in silver with a foil quill.
Each set is 5 pound of solid hand-crafted book, with one set being my personal copy, and the other sent as a gift to the author.
And that's it, folks! This has been an incredible project to work on, and I'm very proud of what I achieved with it.
