Baphomet, also known as the Sabbatic Goat, Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie
An 1856 depiction of the Sabbatic Goat from Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie by Éliphas Lévi. The arms bear the Latin words SOLVE (dissolve) and COAGULA (coagulate).

Baphomet
Baphomet, a controversial figure that has been associated with various occult and mystical practices throughout history. The first known mention of Baphomet was in a letter written in 1098 by Anselm of Ribemont describing the Siege of Antioch during the First Crusade. Anselm stated that the Turks “called loudly upon Baphomet.” Most scholars believe that the word refers to Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
Baphomet was later linked to accusations of heresy and idol worship among the Templars. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that Baphomet took on a more concrete form as an occult icon, thanks to the influential French occultist Éliphas Lévi, who depicted it as a hermaphroditic winged figure adorned with esoteric symbols.
Due to its association with Satanism, Baphomet can be viewed as a demonic or subversive symbol, and thus stand in for something considered evil or deviant. It can also serve as an identifying marker for those aligned with the occult.
However, many occultists view Baphomet not as demonic but as an idol or deity that harmonizes cosmic opposites, a god of duality, e.g., good and evil, light and dark, man and woman, human and beast.

Left the man alone in the paddocks with some fresh air and TLC, he came back with a whole new individuality and Kicked Dog Face.
He's a lot more optimistic than he looks, turns out having a headmate to nurse agrees with his constitution.

I do also want to point out that the association between Baphomet and the Sabbatic Goat image didn’t actually happen until the 1850s so if you’re imagining that the Templars were accused of worshipping a statue of a goat headed being with a nice rack and massive hog your mental image is off.
Baphomet was supposedly a rotting decapitated head. I presume the status of said head’s boobs and wang would theoretically be up to the worshipper but I feel like had this been anything but an accusation of the Templars of being crypto-Islamopagans to avoid paying debts that probably would not have been a theological concern.
I need a third opinion because me and a friend are arguing over this Is Baphomet a demon or something else entirely?
"Baphomet" is the demon that the church accused the Knights Templar of worshipping. (There is no evidence of them ever worshiping demons.)
The name likely comes from "Baphemez" a medieval French mis-transliteration of "Mohamed." The templars spent much of their time guarding pilgrimage routes in the Levant, and thus over time many had an occasionally friendly relationship with the local Muslim population.
The idea being that to a medieval Christian, if you're worshiping something that isn't the Christian god, you're worshiping a demon.
Meaning that over time: "friendly with the local Muslims" became "they're secretly Muslim" but that wasn't scandalous enough so it became "they're literally homosexual devil worshipers."
In reality, the Templars were challenging the Catholic churches wealth and military strength. So they had to go.
#ask#history#occultism#obviously islamopagan isn’t an established term but it’s one I’m using to describe medieval Europe’s understanding of Islam#since the interpretation was ‘Muslims worship Mohammad as a god and therefore are worshiping a lying demon’#falls in line with ‘pagans we’re worshiping lying demons pretending to be gods’ too#actually in point of fact Baphomet didn’t enter English language usage until the early Victorian era in the first place#so the association of it with the sabbatic goat did technically happen pretty quickly from that perspective

Beltane is mentioned in the earliest Irish literature and is associated with important events in Irish mythology. Also known as Cétshamhain (‘first of summer’), it marked the beginning of summer & was when cattle were driven out to the summer pastures. Rituals were performed to protect cattle, people & crops, and to encourage growth. (Today, Witches who observe the Wheel of the Year celebrate Beltane as the height of Spring.)
Special bonfires were kindled, whose flames, smoke & ashes were deemed to have protective powers. The people and their cattle would walk around or between bonfires & sometimes leap over the flames or embers. All household fires would be doused & then re-lit from the Beltane bonfire.
These gatherings would be accompanied by a feast, and some of the food & drink would be offered to the aos sí. Doors, windows, byres & livestock would be decorated with yellow May flowers. They possibly did this because the yellow flowers evoked fire.
In parts of Ireland, people would make a May Bush: typically a thorn bush or branch decorated with flowers, ribbons, bright shells & rushlights. Holy wells were also visited, while Beltane dew was thought to bring beauty & maintain youthfulness.
• The aos sí (often referred to as spirits or faeries) were thought to be especially active at Beltane. Like Samhain, which lies directly opposite from Beltane on the Wheel of the Year, this was seen as a time when the veil between worlds was at its thinnest. At Samhain the veil between the worlds of the living & the dead is thin enough that we can connect & convene with our beloved dead, here at Beltane it’s the veil between the human world, & the world of faeries & nature spirits that has grown thin. Offerings would be left at the ancient faerie forts, the wells & in other sacred places in an effort to appease these nature spirits to ensure a successful growing season.
Other celebrations:
• Rosealia- May 23rd
Rosalia or Rosaria was a festival of roses celebrated on various dates, primarily in May, but scattered through mid-July. The observance is sometimes called a rosatio (“rose-adornment”) or the dies rosationis, “day of rose-adornment,” & could be celebrated also with violets. As a commemoration of the dead, the rosatio developed from the custom of placing flowers at burial sites. It was among the extensive private religious practices by means of which the Romans cared for their dead, reflecting the value placed on tradition (mos maiorum, “the way of the ancestors”), family lineage & memorials ranging from simple inscriptions to grand public works. Several dates on the Roman calendar were set aside as public holidays or memorial days devoted to the dead.
Roses had funerary significance in Greece, but were particularly associated with death & entombment among the Romans. In Greece, roses appear on funerary steles & in epitaphs most often of girls. Flowers were traditional symbols of rejuvenation, rebirth &memory, with the red & purple of roses & violets felt to evoke the color of blood as a form of propitiation

Baphomet/Sabbatic Goat Pendants/Trinkets/Miniature Masks
Baphomet dates back to the 1300s, when the French military/Catholic order of the Knights Templar were accused of heresy for worshipping a demonic idol.
The image of Baphomet as a Sabbatic Goat was popularized by French occultist Eliphas Levi in the 1800s as a symbol of the equilibrium of opposites.

Puck was inspired from, formed in, and betrayed by love. He broke so irreparably that Servitor_Rex, his predecessor and ultimate successor, was forced out of a very old grave to manage the fallout. It was messy and violent; Puck became tyrannical towards the other fae; Rex didn't have the presence of mind to do anything other than retaliate.
Now that their reconciliation is properly underway, and Puck no longer bears the weight of the heartstone, he patrols the Garden as a vigilant ghost; the vengeance of the pain he suffered, which Rex now guards in his own chest; and serves as a shepherd/big brother/party clown for the lesser fae.
When Puck smells lamp gas, or hears crocodile tears, his bells start to jingle. Everyone hears the noise, particularly Rex.

◜🌲𓂃 Happy Yule! ‧ 🕯️◞
⁺ ◍ . ⁺ ☆ ⁺ . ◍ ⁺
Yes, i am aware yule has started, however i feel that since its not over yet, its still a good time to educate!! So happy yule, and lets take some time to learn about it!
⁺ ◍ . ⁺ ☆ ⁺ . ◍ ⁺
★﹒┊What is yule? ⁔⁔
Yule is a festival of the Winter Solstice [shortest day of the year] historically observed by Germanic peoples that got integrated into Christmas, during the Christianization of the Germanic peoples.
⁺ ◍ . ⁺ ☆ ⁺ . ◍ ⁺
★﹒┊Where does it come from? ⁔⁔
Yule celebrations are believed to have originated from the Norse festival of jol, which focuses on themes of light, fire, and feasting. Some historians suggest sacrifices were a significant part of the observance, possibly to gods or the dead [or both!]. It was argued that the original festival of Yule was a Norse day of the dead, with Odin [or Jolnir] acting as the god of the dead, however this has been disputed as a new year festival to set the tone for the coming months.
⁺ ◍ . ⁺ ☆ ⁺ . ◍ ⁺
★﹒┊How is yule celebrated? ⁔⁔
⧼ 🪵 ⧽ Yule log and food
It is thought that the original Yule log was a large log that was ceremoniously lit on Christmas Eve and kept burning for the twelve nights of Christmas, leading up to Twelfth Night. A popular modern take on the Yule log is a roulade-style cake decorated to look like a log eaten at sometime during the season. During Yule, many cattle are slaughtered due to being unable to be fed during harsh winters, thus giving a hearty feast for all during the winter months. It also meant that offerings could be left out for the gods. After the 9th century when King Haakon Haraldsson went to visit England, everyone was required to have ale from a measure of grain and keep the holiday while the ale lasted or else be subject to a fine.
⧼ 🦌 ⧽ Decorations
A remaining tradition in many areas is the Yule goat, made from straw, believed to have originated in ancient times as a tribute to Thor, who rode in a chariot pulled by goats. In Sweden, the goat is associated with Christmas celebrations and Santa Claus. Many homes also decorate with nature seen as important, like pinecones, candles [white, red, gold, silver and green], holly as a form of protection, mistletoe for love, and more!
⧼ ⚔️ ⧽ Other celebrants
Currently, Yule is observed by many Neo-Pagans and Wiccans as the second sabbat of the Wheel of the Year, with rituals to welcome the Sun's return. Some reenact Celtic legends [like the battle of the Holly king and Oak king], recreate ancient Norse traditions [like burning yule], or staying awake until dawn to observe nature's cycles

Fact OTD: The yule log is a different wood type in every culture that celebrates! In England, oak is the wood of choice for the Yule log, while Scotland prefers birch. In France, cherry wood is used, and the log is even sprinkled with wine before burning, filling the air with a delightful aroma.
