Got informed by project manager 30 min before a meeting with clients that i have to give the update on our work. genuinely almost shit myself this was my first client facing meeting why did he throw me into the deep end like that. seriously, though. i work in higher education, and part of my job is students sending me transcripts. you'd think the ones who have the least idea how to actually do that would be the older ones, and while sure, they definitely struggle with it, i see it most with the younger students. the teens to early 20s crowd.

very, astonishingly often, they don't know how to work with .pdf documents. i get garbage phone screenshots, sometimes inserted into an excel or word file for who knows what reason, but most often it's just a raw .jpg or other image file.

they definitely either don't know how to use a scanner, don't have access to one, or don't even know where they might go for that (staples and other office supply stores sometimes still have these services, but public libraries always have your back, kids.) so when they have a paper transcript and need to send me a copy electronically, it's just terrible photos at bad angles full of thumbs and text-obscuring shadows.

mind bogglingly frequently, i get cell phone photos of computer screens. they don't know how to take a screenshot on a computer. they don't know the function of the Print Screen button on the keyboard. they don't know how to right click a web page, hit "print", and choose "save as PDF" to produce a full and unbroken capture of the entirety of a webpage.

sometimes they'll just copy the text of a transcript and paste it right into the message of an email. that's if they figure out the difference between the body text portion of the email and the subject line, because quite frankly they often don't.

these are people who in most cases have done at least some college work already, but they have absolutely no clue how to utilize the attachment function in an email, and for some reason they don't consider they could google very quickly for instructions or even videos.

i am not taking a shit on gen z/gen alpha here, i'm really not.

what i am is aghast that they've been so massively failed on so many levels. the education system assumed they were "native" to technology and needed to be taught nothing. their parents assumed the same, or assumed the schools would teach them, or don't know how themselves and are too intimidated to figure it out and teach their kids these skills at home.

they spend hours a day on instagram and tiktok and youtube and etc, so they surely know (this is ridiculous to assume!!!) how to draft a formal email and format the text and what part goes where and what all those damn little symbols means, right? SURELY they're already familiar with every file type under the sun and know how to make use of whatever's salient in a pinch, right???

THEY MUST CERTAINLY know, innately, as one knows how to inhale, how to type in business formatting and formal communication style, how to present themselves in a way that gets them taken seriously by formal institutions, how to appear and be competent in basic/standard digital skills. SURELY. Of course. RIGHT!!!!

it's MADDENING, it's insane, and it's frustrating from the receiving end, but even more frustrating knowing they're stumbling blind out there in the digital spaces of grown-up matters, being dismissed, being considered less intelligent, being talked down to, because every adult and system responsible for them just

ASSUMED they should "just know" or "just figure out" these important things no one ever bothered to teach them, or half the time even introduce the concepts of before asking them to do it, on the spot, with high educational or professional stakes.

kids shouldn't have to supplement their own education like this and get sneered and scoffed at if they don't.

Anyone who's like woah leaking the patreon stuff is too far be so for real right now. People like me funded Kittycorn while she was being deceptive about the nature of her work behind the scenes. Additionally, Kittycorn is literally associated with at least 3 pedophiles (one of which is pro irl incest and abused their sibling who Kittycorn attempted to silence).

I will never get the time I spent in regards to Sparklecare, nor my money back. Neither will anyone else who was mislead in regards to the kind of person Kittycorn was. Minors were also at a point staff on this comic who had no idea the shit Kittycorn was brewing.

It has been incredibly disappointing to further see Kittycorn go back on what she once presented (see the FAQ in regards to what fans can draw/any ask on the main tumblr in regards to the matter), and to see her further deflect refusing to take accountability. There are a lot of vulnerable people in her audience including other survivors. When a safe space of trust is cultivated with a creator who is straight up talking about how to lie to their audience... How do you think it feels for those survivors who kinned or related to Sly only to find out the creator wanted to make them a creepy incestuous rapist stalker. Or Doom who is now a groomer attracted to their goddamn child. How do you think it feels for those survivors to know the creator they looked up to and sought comfort in the work of is buddy buddy with the exact same kind of people who groomed and traumatized them.

If any of the former ZCP wants to do everyone a favour, leak the entire Sparklecare story (and whatever else). At this point I want everything to be scorched earth and hope nothing grows in its place. I hope Kittycorn leaves and doesn't come back to hurt more people.

Types of Argument: Toulmin

There are 3 basic structures or types of argument:

Toulmin Argument

Rogerian Argument

Classical or Aristotelian Argument

The Toulmin Argument

Although the Toulmin method was originally developed to analyze arguments, some professors ask students to model its components.

Each of these serves a different purpose, and deciding which type to use depends upon the rhetorical situation.

In other words, you have to think about what is going to work best for your audience given your topic and the situation in which you are writing.

There are 6 elements for analyzing, and, in this case, presenting arguments that are important to the Toulmin method.

Claims - A statement of opinion that the author is asking her or his audience to accept as true.

Grounds - The facts, data, or reasoning upon which the claim is based. Essentially, the grounds are the facts making the case for the claim.

Warrant - What links the grounds to the claim. This is what makes the audience understand how the grounds are connected to supporting the claim. Sometimes, the warrant is implicit (not directly stated), but the warrant can be stated directly as well. As a writer, you are making assumptions about what your audience already believes, so you have to think about how clear your warrant is and if you need to state it directly for your audience. You must also think about whether or not a warrant is actually an unproven claim.

Backing - Gives additional support for the claim by addressing different questions related to your claim.

Qualifier - Essentially the limits to the claim or an understanding that the claim is not true in all situations. Qualifiers add strength to claims because they help the audience understand the author does not expect her or his opinion to be true all of the time or for her or his ideas to work all of the time. If writers use qualifiers that are too broad, such as “always” or “never,” their claims can be really difficult to support. Qualifiers like “some” or “many” help limit the claim, which can add strength to the claim.

Rebuttal - Is when the author addresses the opposing views. The author can use a rebuttal to pre-empt counter arguments, making the original argument stronger.

These elements of a Toulmin analysis can help you as both a reader and a writer.

When you’re analyzing arguments as a reader, you can look for these elements to help you understand the argument and evaluate its validity.

When you’re writing an argument, you can include these same elements in to ensure your audience will see the validity in your claims.

Examples

Claims. There should be more laws to regulate texting while driving in order to cut down on dangerous car accidents.

Grounds. The National Safety Council estimates that 1.6 million car accidents per year are caused by cell phone use and texting.

Warrant. Being distracted by texting on a cell phone while driving a car is dangerous and causes accidents.

Backing. With greater fines and more education about the consequences, people might think twice about texting and driving.

Qualifier. There should be more laws to regulate texting while driving in order to cut down on some of the dangerous car accidents that happen each year.

Rebuttal. Although police officers are busy already, making anti-texting laws a priority saves time, money, and lives. Local departments could add extra staff to address this important priority.

The Toulmin method, developed by philosopher Stephen Toulmin, is essentially a structure for analyzing arguments.

But the elements for analysis are so clear and structured that many professors now have students write argumentative essays with the elements of the Toulmin method in mind.

This type of argument works well when there are no clear truths or absolute solutions to a problem.

Toulmin arguments take into account the complex nature of most situations.

thinking about how the Sumeru Archon Quest can be read as a metaphor for Alhaitham and Kaveh's relationship and their progression and going crazy

Alhaitham is present during the quest, whereas Kaveh is not, and this causes Alhaitham to question why Kaveh was not present in saving Sumeru. Relating this to their thesis, although it made many bounds for Sumeru’s understanding of ancient languages and architecture which held promise for betterment of the future, it was abandoned before completion due to their clashing of views and personal attacks of each other. Alhaitham repeatedly questioning why Kaveh was missing hints that Kaveh should have been a part of the Archon-saving plan, in that, Kaveh was missing from the betterment of Sumeru. Once again, an opportunity passed by for them uniting for a mutually agreed cause. This is due to the dissonance between them and their lack of successful communication.

In the Archon Quest, Alhaitham is present, ready for reconciliation, to work together, whereas Kaveh is missing, unaware of the chance of reconciliation. Kaveh believes that Alhaitham deliberately stirred trouble in Sumeru, rather than saving it, due to his flawed perception of Alhaitham – just as he believes that Alhaitham wants something in return for allowing Kaveh to live in his house, rather than it being an invitation for reconciliation, due to his flawed perception of Alhaitham.

This, in turn, creates a space in the narrative for the two to join together of their own accord, however, the two need to be in the same mindset for reconciliation. As established in Kaveh's Hangout and A Parade of Providence, this can be brought about by the mutual understanding that their clashes do not stem from overall differences in thinking, but their way of communication. Rather than their relationship being based on the opposition of their thinking, it should be based upon the potential that can be borne from identifying good in the balancing of viewpoints – which their thesis had achieved.

Their development as individuals ultimately lies within the other as they possess what the other lacks in order to fully complete their understanding of each other, and themselves. Alhaitham is the grounding for Kaveh’s ideals and the push for him to prioritise himself in his pursuit for happiness for “all” (as established within a parade of providence), whereas Kaveh is the breach in Alhaitham’s rationality and allows him to understand the sensibility of others around him, enabling Alhaitham to possess an enhanced version of his truth.

Frigid Rage. When you enter a rage while Icebreaker is on your person, you gain resistance to cold damage, or immunity if you already have resistance, and you can choose one of the following options:

A jagged mass of ice forms around the head of Icebreaker, increasing its size and devastating power. When you hit with an attack using the maul, the target takes an extra 1d8 cold damage. A creature killed by this damage shatters into frozen chunks.

A protective armor of ice crystals forms around your body. You gain a bonus to your AC equal to half your rage damage bonus (rounded down). While the ice armor is present, it emits a frigid aura within 5 feet of you. When a creature of your choice that lacks resistance or immunity to cold damage enters the area for the first time on its turn or starts its turn there, that creature’s speed is reduced by 10 feet and it can’t take reactions until the start of its next turn.

Frigid Rage lasts as long as you are raging. While Frigid Rage is active, you can use your reaction when your rage ends or when you are hit with a melee attack to end Frigid Rage early in an explosion of ice shards. Each creature within 15 feet of you must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes a number of d8s of cold damage equal to your rage damage bonus on a failure, or half as much damage on a success. You can expend one use of your rage as a bonus action while raging to reactivate Frigid Rage.

Remember when games came with little manuals? Ah, the good ol' days. So yeah, my current hyperfixation on Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is apparently strong enough that I ended up making a fan manual for this game!!

Fun fact, I made it in LibreOffice Impress (a.k.a. the LibreOffice equivalent to Microsoft PowerPoint). Mostly because I didn't want to download and learn how to use a whole separate application for like, print publishing or whatever. I knew I could more or less manage what I wanted in Impress. :P

Please Start Archiving in the US

With current events, I think it is prudent that everyone, that is able to, needs start archiving shit. I am a former library worker but I do not know much about cybersecurity. If you do want to go down that route please research and keep you and your archive safe :). The more copies that are preserved, then the more likely it is that the media will survive. Even if you save only 2 files that is still important!

First, I will list how to create an computer archive and best practices, then I will provide a list of known targets and suggested materials to add.

You need somewhere to store your data most people will use their computer's storage drive but you need to have backups! Do not rely on cloud storage solutions, they require internet connection are vulnerable to data breaches, and the companies that store that data must follow any laws that the government may decide to pass. USBs or external hardrives are best options. CDs can be used in a pinch, but are more likely to degrade as well as having lower storage capacity then the previous options. Use whatever you have lying around, you do not need to spend money if you don't want to.

When saving data use file formats that are common and able to be read without use of a special software. (that means no .docx) PDF/A is the gold standard for archiving. It is a subtype of pdf that contains metadata, such as typefaces and graphical info, that ensure the files are read properly in the future. Adobe Acrobat is able to save and convert documents into PDF/A. PDFTron, DocuPub, and Ghostscript are all free or have free versions that create pdf/a files. PNG, JPEG2000, .txt, MP3, wav, are other common file types that the Smithsonian recommends for data storage. For a full list of types to use and avoid, see the sources cited at the bottom.

What are we archiving?

Please gather both fiction and nonfiction resources. Nonfiction collection ideas: Current news clips, local history of marginalized communities, interviews, biographies, memoirs, zines, and art pieces. Saving scientific research is incredibly important! In 1933, one of the first places they targeted was the Institute of Sexual Science. Lots of what was stored there was never recovered. Environmental science, trans and intersex health, and minority history will likely be targeted first. For fiction, the most commonly challenged books last year were: 1) GenderQueer by Maia Kobabe 2) All Boys Aren't Blue by George Johnson 3) This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson 4) The of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky 5) Flamer by Mike Curato 6) The Bluest Eyes by Toni Morrison 7) Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews 8) Tricks by Ellen Hopkins 9) Let's Talk about it (Teen guide to sex, relationships, and being a human) by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan 10) Sold by Patricia McCormick I present this list so you have an idea of what is normally targeted. Books that describe racism and queer identities are most common, but other targets include any depictions of violence, drugs, sex. Use your personal archive to accumulate data that you personally are passionate about. The more niche a topic the more likely it is that other people will not have it in their storage.

Lastly, please remember as an archivist you are not there to determine if a piece is worthy of being saved. Just because you do not like or agree with the message does not mean it will be saved from being banned. All artworks amateur or professional are worthy of being archived.

How do I apply?

No application needed, just create a work and submit as set out below. Anything made by the deadline will go in subject to content as below.

There will be no "background checks" or automatic exclusions of participants, however the zine is intended to build community within the ship scene: if any participant harrasses any other, their work may be removed from the zine.

What content is allowed?

Fanfiction, fanart, recipes, cosplay, meta... Any medium as long as it can be flattened into a PDF eventually. The work should be new and not published anywhere else until the zine's release (though you may create a teaser / preview during July if you wish).

The work should focus on the relationship between Atticus/Fubuki and Chazz/Jun. This relationship can be however you interpret it and both characters do not necessarily need to be present (e.g. a sketch of Jun writing a love letter to Atticus would be fine; so would a drabble about an OC's fly-on-the-wall description of the two together). However, please do not include romantic side pairings.

This is a low effort zine so there is no minimum requirement. I am bravely setting no maximum but this is a LOW EFFORT zine so probably not the place for your 400k epic. The long creation period is to reduce stress not increase it!

This will be a SFW zine so please no sexually explicit material, graphic depictions of violence, abuse, or major criminal activity. This is for practical reasons and creatives who may make works containing darker themes are welcome.

the space prototype's height maps are present in Data/Planets as txt files like this. normal1.txt to normal14.txt

it seems to just be the value of every channel from 0 to 255 per pixel

they can just be loaded ingame easily by right clicking and pressing Load Planet Height Map, and inserting one of the txt files

so here are all the 14 height maps in order, viewed ingame

you can use the raise and lower tools to modify the terrain manually, and then right click, and save terrain map to save it in the same format

then you can reapply it safely

curiously it will also read any txt file with no errors. heres me inputting the maxis creation dates file i have, and the the adventure health values one, on top of a manually-created empty map txt (because it doesnt actually overwrite the entire file)

not just txt files! it will read anything! most files dont bring much results though as they dont have nicely separated numbers that the game can interpret. here is it reading the pdf for the spore prima guide. which isnt much but its there

anyway heres me tossing in every dang txt file (minus the empty map) in this folder together on top of the LOL map

and me keysmashing a bunch and then trying to space it out to match. so you can sort of make some noise here

also the resolution of the map is 64x48

theoretically itd be easy to write a tool to convert any arbitrary greyscale 64x48 image into a map for the space prototype, but i dont have enough programming knowledge

Hi! I saw your answer to the question about "Anarchist leadership" and had a followup question. My concept of leadership has been that the practical function of the role itself is how you described a "coordinator," and that the difficulties which anarchism seeks to address arise when team coordination gives way to that individual abusing the opportunity of coordination to divide labor unequally (IE less to themself) or ignore input on how work is done, by whom, or when. To put it simply, my idea has been that the difference between a "leader" and a "boss" is, at extremes, that a leader takes on as much work (or more) as the rest of the group and considers every opinion in the group before making a final decision, while a boss accepts no input and does no work beyond coordination.

My first question is this: When a group is doing work collaboratively, how does an anarchist structure address the potential roadblock of deliberation? If every member is required to provide consensus on a decision affecting the group, what is the method for decision-making when consensus can't be reached? The only option I know of is an individual whose job is making a final decision in a case where one or more individuals refuse to agree with the majority, which is undeniably an authoritarian structure, but are there alternatives that can effectively limit deliberation when there is only so much time available? In short, what is the anarchist method of making a concise decision on something that affects every individual present?

My second question is this: If an individual's responsibility is coordination, or even being the "final say" in deliberation (assuming there is no other option), what is the alternative to rotation of responsibility if there are no other individuals capable of accomplishing that? I recognize that rotation of responsibility is an effective way to avoid one individual being placed in a position where their coordination becomes critical to the function of the group, but there are scenarios where nobody else in the group has the capacity to organize and coordinate and one can't be provided. How does one avoid a power structure when only one person is capable of coordinating?

I also have a followup about how anarchism addresses human vanity & pettiness in both of these cases, but I can save that so you don't have to answer too much in one post. Thanks in advance!

I'm going to start with the simple part: what you describe as the difference between a leader and a boss is, in effect, the difference between a boss and a lazy boss. The authority is exactly the same. The worst bosses I've worked for were willing to work very very hard, they were still my boss and the fact that they worked hard changed nothing about that relationship. A person that has the power to hire and fire others is a boss. If a person can decide that I should no longer have a stable income, I am at their mercy. They are my boss and no hard work or cool attitude can change that.

As for forming consensus: if consensus can not be reached it means a decision that works for everybody can not be reached and to those committed to consensus it is vital to keep working, keep talking, go over all the possibilities, pros and cons, and unorthodox alternatives again until a consensus is reached. This book probably addresses a lot of your follow up questions. A vital thing to understand before you get started is that in order for consensus to work, there has to be:

No leader ad a commitment to dismantle power dynamics. Not just the pretense that there isn't a power dynamic. It has to be real. There can't be anyone with a 'final say', that's just authority with extra steps. A person with the power to have a 'final say' is a boss. There's no anarchism there. None.

An agreement by all participants to work by consensus.

Time and patience.

When people have spend most of their life not living with consensus, they will come in with attitudes that don't fit a consensus process. They will see the goal as 'reaching the decision that I already know we need to make' instead of seriously considering alternatives that others bring to the table. They will try to gain a majority for their plan instead of working with everyone in the group. They will try to get their way by blocking every alternative. It takes time, practice and experiencing the benefits of a consensus process for that attitude to change.

Toward a unifying theory of the blight and its effects

In this paper, we present a unifying theory of the blight that positions it as a corruption of the ancient isatunoll, or collective hivemind consciousness, of the Titans and their descendants. We propose that this isatunoll, sundered from the Titans and cast into the Fade by the Evanuris and then further altered to incorporate the Taint, constitutes the blight as it is known today. Additionally, we propose that the Joining ritual of the Order of the Grey Wardens serves to inoculate those who survive it against further corruption by the Taint via a sympathetic bond with the archetypal isatunoll. Finally, we provide reasoning to suggest that the Joining can only be survived by those with latent genetic heritage derived from the Titans themselves, whether directly (as with the dwarva) or via the ancient elvhen people who constructed physical bodies from lyrium, the blood of the Titans.

FAQ

🌓 Do I need to read the entirety of a fic before I add it to my favourite ten list?

Nope! But the more you can fully read, the better. The form has an option to indicate whether you've fully read a fic, just for our interests sake. If there's a fic that you think looks really up your alley, and you've read its Excerpt (and maybe a few chapters to get the feel for it), you can add it to your favourite ten list.

🌓 Do I have to kudos and/or comment?

No, it's not necessary but highly encouraged.

🌓 Do I have to submit TEN favourite fics?

No; if you only want to list 1 as a favourite fic, that is also fine, but, where's the fun in that?? We want to celebrate lots of fics!

🌓 I didn't nominate, can I vote?

Yes, even if you didn't submit nominations, we are happy to hear your favourite fics from the nominated pool of fics!

🌓 Do I have to submit them in alphabetical order?

Not necessary, but if you have time to, it might help us organise things to present them in alphabetical order later.

🌓 I missed the nomination period! Can I still nominate a fic?

Sorry, but we'll be focusing on these 79 nominated fics. However, we will soon have an "additional recommended fics" list with a simpler submission form. Those won't be eligible for voting as a favourite, but we will collect them on the blog until June (when the project wraps up).
