the thing about the one piece live action is so many of the characters are just instantly likable with such unique designs and lore. the sea is full of eccentric bastards n their equally quirky crew and they all have beef with each other over a theoretical treasure chest. the main character (luffy) is a ball of unbridled enthusiasm who follows absolutely no social conventions and his crew is a ragtag group of dreamers who r enamored w him. the parental figures (nami’s mom, zeff, shanks) r all willing to die/lose a limb for the kids they adopted. found family and friendship is an underlying theme. it’s just fun and refreshing to see

The stars above stretched endlessly across the night sky, their brightness cutting through the dark canopy like diamonds spilled across velvet. It was your favorite part of living here—how open and vast the heavens always seemed. You found comfort in how steady they remained, unmoved by the chaos of life below. 

Sometimes, as you looked up at the twinkling lights, you wondered what it would be like to sail in the sky itself, drifting from planet to planet like the sea of stars was just another ocean. Luffy, ever the dreamer, always promised to make your wildest fantasies come true, and knowing him, it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility. 

But what about you? What about your responsibilities?

Shanks' voice pulled you from your thoughts, though you hadn’t caught his words.

"Hey, are you alright lass?" he asked softly, his tone laced with a gentle concern.

You blinked, turning your attention back to him, meeting those familiar, warm eyes that seemed to hold a world of their own. 

"Sorry, no. What did you say?"

He smiled, that easy, carefree grin that never quite matched the weight of his words. "I was asking if you’d join me at sea again."

The idea hung between you like the scent of saltwater that always seemed to cling to him. You opened your mouth, glancing toward the town below, gesturing to the village that stretched out in the distance, its peaceful quietness versus the unpredictability of a pirate’s life. The flicker of lanterns from the homes and streets was like the heartbeat of the place you’d sworn to protect.

But Shanks shook his head, his expression unbothered by your hesitation. "Not for long," he clarified. "Just two weeks. I know you couldn’t stay forever."

His words were calm, non-pressuring, but the temptation lingered like a beckoning wave. You mulled it over, your mind swimming with the responsibilities that weighed you down. You weren’t young anymore, at least not in the way that counted. The youthful impulsiveness of picking up and leaving whenever you felt like it had long passed. 

Now, you had cadets who looked up to you, a village that relied on your protection, and a life you couldn’t simply walk away from. The thought of leaving—even just for a few weeks—and returning to disaster haunted you.

Yet, here stood Shanks, the man who could never be caught, the one who had always captured your heart. He wasn’t crowding you, wasn’t demanding an answer. He was just… there, waiting, like always. He reached into his pocket and passed you a handkerchief. You hadn’t realized you still had remnants of your green face mask smeared across your cheek.

You took the handkerchief with a small, grateful nod, wiping away the last smudge of your mask. Shanks’ grin widened as he watched you, a mischievous glint lighting up his features.

"Lovely as ever," he said with that familiar charm.

You raised an eyebrow, disbelief clear on your face. "Really now?"

"Yes," he said, his tone softening into something more genuine. "Like the first day I saw you. You just keep getting better and better."

His words, while honest and genuine, cut deep. They were too real, too heartfelt for the situation you were both in. It hurt—knowing he meant every word. You let out a heavy sigh, your chest tightening as you voiced what was already understood. 

"That’s what makes this so painful, Shanks. We’ve been dancing around each other for years. How long can we keep playing this game?"

You both fell silent, a weight settling between you like the fog rolling off the sea. The unspoken truth was something everyone knew—from the Celestial Dragons to the mermaids deep in the ocean. Even the sea beasts you used to ride in your younger days knew: You and Shanks were in love. But there were laws to nature that even love couldn’t break. 

A bird and a fish could admire each other, even come to each other’s aid when needed, but they could never be together. One couldn’t fly, and the other couldn’t swim—not where it mattered.

"What a cruel twist of fate this is," you whispered, your voice barely carried by the wind.

Shanks nodded solemnly, his gaze never leaving yours.

"Indeed."

I’m like five hours late with Starbucks to this but I neeeed to ask you about your Marine Buggy au if you’re up for it. How much do you think Buggy is a formidable threat in this au and how much is him somehow stumbling into success like in canon? Not that canon Buggy can’t be a threat under the right circumstances , but one can’t deny how much is just pure unadulterated dumb luck and it’s just extremly funny to me imagining another version of him bumbling his way to the top in the same manner, but also this version of Buggy seems more competent in comparison, so I am interested in hearing how you interpret him yourself.

Also as a Shuggy appreciator I am still gonna throw out the scenario of someone promoting Firebug up a rank and adding „You really did it Sir. If those dastardly pirates set sail just an hour earlier we wouldn’t have had the menpower and that tactical advantage that helped us win that last fight . It’s a shame that red headed bastard got away, but nevertheless this is a huge success for all of us. Truly remarkable Sir! How’d you do it? How did you keep them from setting sail for so LONG? Did you mingle amongst the crew to stage a mutiny? Did you damage their boat? for marine!buggy I still have to believe he falls UP as is his MO. this little dude has supernatural luck and a bizarre power over men with his strange charisma so having that transfer to this au with minor tweaks.

I like to imagine he was under tsuru's tutelage once he officially joined the navy - as it's difficult for me to see him viewing any man as worth his obedience after rogers and his broken heart. plus she has a strong immunity to flashy types and I believe she'd be capable of curbing his worst traits. buggy would need someone to speak to him like an adult, blunt and lacking the whimsical dreams of his adoptive pirates who I see as having allowed buggy too lofty of a perception on the world with his issues.

would he be a dangerous marine? probably not on his own - but being believed in and supported by structure and more talented minds - I think he'd be a crafty ballistics expert and a typically underestimated foe. very useful against run of the mill pirates and keeping shorelines safe. but against more daunting enemies he'd depend on numbers and the backup of more powerful allies (while absolutely taking the praise for "organizing the group attack". )

like, please imagine smoker being his subordinate - that is hilarious to me.

I think he'd be a successful marine with very little interest in the darker machinations of the marines because he's only here to feed his loss and be praised for doing a good job. however he would be easily manipulated by darker hearted higher ups and probably not the most reliable.

unfortunately he's still buggy at heart, still a dreamer, and if he happens to mess up when his envy of free-spirited pirates gets in the way of his job, well he gets demoted/promoted endlessly like he's riding a ferris wheel with a broken brake.

the amount of times buggy has been interrupted mid-tumble with shanks and it has been misconstrued as him "fighting epically against the horrid red hair captain" is in the hundreds at this point.

the Marines who know the truth wish they didn't and he gets his ear dragged around by tsuru as she screams at him: that's not what she meant when she said to take red hair down!!!

Finally we are actually getting some info and not skipping to someone else!

I gotta say… I did not see that coming but I’m loving it!!! Some good old war tactics and not just charging in head first (coughLuffycough). Love it. It shows exactly how long this has been building up for! So far we have only speculated how good of a strategist Dragon was based on few little cues but to actually see the extent… I’m glad I was right! No offense to Luffy: it’s fun to see him punch people, but this is more my piece of cake. Also… KARMA IS COMING BACK BITCHES!!!

Anything that can make Dragon make that face is a big no-no in my books… This is going to be fun: I can’t wait to see them all fight seriously!!! Also… is that Shanks? Or his evil twin maybe?

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!! Finally! Someone said it! People really need to take Dragon’s words here and tattoo them on their foreheads. We need more of him in the real world… I’m real glad we are getting some answers to the key questions we (o at least I) had on the revolution. Again, we always speculated and there were debates around but to have it put black on white is great!

This opens a whole fucking gate on how different the revolution is from what Luffy is doing, for example. They are an army: they fight a war that is bigger than all of them and it needs sacrifices, it’s not all happy-go-lucky. Yes, they know there are bad and good kings. Yes, they are saddened if something happens to the good ones. BUT! They know the general public doesn’t and won’t understand that. They know that things are too complicated to be just black and white but that sometimes that’s all people can see. And they are not above getting their hands dirty if it’s what is needed. They all have a heavy weight on their consciences but they will gladly carry it if it means that the generations after them won’t have to. Sabo’s cold statement here and Dragon’s sarcastic comment just a second later make that very clear. Their hands are covered in blood already. And I adore that Oda is going with this more realistic version of a war and has not just decided to put together a bunch of idealists that are destined to fail. I love how it all works as a sort of balance to Luffy and the Strawhats. The revolutionaries are older, more seasoned realists and the Strawhats, while not exactly idealists either, are more dreamers and optimists. I know I’m generalizing but I think it gets the point across well enough. And I’m in love with all of this. Good job Oda!

Yeah, I can see why that might look quite incriminating… I wasn’t so happy about the revolutionaries all just believing Sabo did it so easily if it was just a headline but I understand now that we know there was an actual picture. Like: boy, I raised you since you were a child, you are my most trusted and my second in command but wtf are you doing with a dead body in your living room?!?!?

Happy to see them holding their grounds on a one on one. Sure, there were handicaps and all but still! That’s no small feat! It took like a fuckton of samurais plus a dragon to do that before and Morley is just here swinging that trident around!

This is gonna be bad. This is going to be very, very bad. God, I hope we are sticking to this storyline and not cutting to someone else. I NEED ANSWERS ODA! NOW!

Love the Strawhats to pieces but I am realky enjoying these last chapters without them. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, right?

One Piece Live Action Episode 5 EAT AT BARATIE!

It's hard being a One Piece fan. We celebrating the success of the series, then given the best episode in the anime and then the manga has just been serving.

Episode 5 has been my favorite episode in the season so far. But that may change soon cause I said I liked Episode 4 after I watched it.

I felt a little for Little Luffy in the flashback. Maybe because Garp was an actual human being and Little Luffy wasn't doing his cute little whine when his Grandpa was scolding him that I was actually sad for Luffy not having someone to support his dream of piracy.

But Garp was still Garp and I know he cares about his grandson. I still cry during the flashback when Luffy was climbing up the platform to Ace. Garp was carrying Luffy home and Garp was apologizing for being such a cruel grandpa and that maybe he wanted a different grandpa. But Luffy just nuzzled his head into his grandpa's back and called out to him in his cute little tone and Garp said they'd have a feast back home because he took a lot from the marine ship.

Damn. They're about to give Garp the Fist of Love and Galaxy Impact

I could almost hear him say "As expected of my grandson"

Luffy willing to stand up to his grandpa for his dream. Even if it meant that he may be arrested.

I swear without Nami they'd be broke and lost at sea.

The dynamic between Nami and Zoro, being the first two people Luffy ever recruited was so brother-sister looking after their younger brother coded.

The set designer for this show deserves all the awards. Like seriously wherever they docked the real thing I want to see it.

My favorite All Blue dreamer

I wished they kept to the scene in the manga. Like Luffy's first impression of Sanji and why he asked him to be part of his crew was not because he was a good fighter nor because he liked his food, Luffy hasn't eaten anything Sanji made yet, but he asked Sanji to be part of his crew was because Sanji fed Gin when everyone else tried to kick him out of the restaurant. He saw Sanji's kindness and wanted him to be part of his crew.

This is why there is a lock in the fridge in Sunny and giant mousetraps

I believe in the theory that there's no one in Laugh Tale or they could be vegans. Cause Luffy would have found One Piece already if someone was cooking there.

After seeing Arlong, Nami's happiness became very important to me

He promised to pay with a treasure tab. He made the same promise to Makino. I really hope he returns to Foosha Village and pays that tab cause Makino's a mom now.

Luffy and Sanji conversing about their dream with bright looks on their faces is very important to me.

I love that this is what they're bonding over.

I liked Buggy's intro. BUT Mihawk's intro, destroying Don Krieg's fleet, became my absolute fave bounty intro.

I know he and Shanks fought a lot over the years so he easily recognized the hat. And I know he knows about Luffy. Not by name. But because Shanks lost his arm to a boy in East Blue and he probably made the connection. So him mentioning the hat really got me excited.

I love Zoro and Mihwak's duel. They perfectly recreated the battle and really did justice to the moment that defined Zoro's entire brain chemistry as a pirate, Strawhat first mate and Luffy's best friend.

Den Den Mushi Appreciation

Love they're incorporating more designs to the Den Den Mushi. In the anime Garp had a megaphone so this was so in the world tone

Do you think buggy goes through his bad timeline? Do you think he enjoys his life?

generally? i mean, yeah, i think buggy has enough perspective to know he’s not living his worst life. that would be, like, dead at fifteen, up on that platform next to roger. or, if you require he still be alive at present day for it to count, he could always be stuck in impel down, or worse, a laughingstock in east blue while his childhood frenemy and a teenager he failed to beat up are literally emperors.

but he’s also enough of a dreamer to think this isn’t his best life. that would be one where he’s found the one piece, shanks and luffy have bowed to his greatness, marines quiver in his presence, people like crocodile beg to lick his boots, etc. etc. and maybe roger turns out to have been alive the whole time and he apologizes for leaving buggy all alone in the world

but, you know, on the infinite scale of possible timelines, i think he’s aware he’s in one of the better ones. he’s got tons of followers, the marines consider him a serious threat, by some standard he’s managed to make himself shanks’ equal after all these years! sure, his life isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty good. and who knows? maybe he’ll find the one piece and it’ll get even better!

see thats the thing on a narrative/thematic level Cross Guild could very well be the potential final foil to the Straw Hats of a crew composed entirely of dreamers and I just think Uta kind of fits really well into that equation not only in relation to Buggy but also Mihawk and Crocodile in a funny way

like Buggy always had that ambition to be King of the Pirates a literal final reckoning between Buggy and Shanks where one had the potential but never the ambition and the other the ambition but never the dream and specifically atm Cross Guild is composed of both Mihawk and Crocodile who are cynical broken dreamers in a way so I think Cross Guild gaining members who are similar broken dreamers (like Moria, Doflamingo, Uta, etc.) would just work out so well

Mihawk seeing Uta would be v funny because Mihawk at the very beginning of the series specifically remembered Shanks always telling him about this one random kid and then Mihawk brings him the poster like "hey your dumbass kid bothered me" followed by Kuma sending Zoro and Perona his way so his dumbass was like "fine you two can stay whatever" so seeing Uta would be a similar boat of Mihawk once again dealing with Shanks' extended family alongside Buggy. Not even in an exasperated way but a "well this might as well happen. Whatever." -chugs his bottle of wine-

Crocodile is also funny to consider because outside of Crocomom theory, they actually share the same dream of utopia? but like in very different ways so I think that could be something funny, because Crocodile used to be a dreamer who became cynical so to him the idea of utopia is power and control over others, whereas to Uta its forcing happiness and compliance onto others.

Overall on a thematic level I think Cross Guild just has so much potential with so many characters and, again, considering film red straight up made oda add an 'Uta is canon' panel at the tailend of wano, Cross Guild would just be a very organic way of adding her in.

on a comedy level though its shanks' ex, his other ex and his daughter teaming up with a mafia boss and several other freaks to kick his ass

Vessel (refered to as The Ewer) - Their usual conversational shape is a 8'6" tall draconic humanoid with pale skin, long curling black horns, silvery iridescent hair, and color-shifting eyes with black sclera. They have a dancer's build, and often wear draping transluscent clothing, though they will adjust to fit the culture around them. They sometimes shift to make this form more alike to their company (such as becoming more human-looking), but they are plenty fine leaving their draconic nature exposed unless necessary.

True Dragon - Their true form is of a massive sea serpent, stocky in build and with short powerful crocodilian legs and fanning tendrils where wings would be. Their back is an oil-slick rainbow-black, and their belly is translucent and a faint white. Their tail starts with membranes attached to their 'wings', then at the end of it's great length is a 'hand-like' appendage of tendrils. Their face is haloed by two sets of large fins at the sides, and a mane of jelly-fish like tendrils down their neck. Their face bears six eyes, two large on their bottom jaw, two small above their mouth, and two along the sides of their snout, and all three sets can move independently. Their mouth curves up in a 'kitty-smile' (think like a beluga), and bears rows upon rows of giant sharp teeth.

(For the following: Lhi's abilities are dictacted by where they are! In most mortal realms they are as follows!)

powers/abilities:

shapeshifting/mimicry/illusion - Lhi has full domain over shapeshifting, though their truth can be spied in a shimmering outline in full moonlight! They cannot take your form/voice/etc. without permission, and if permission is revoked, they lose access to it. They always ask, it's polite!

hydrokinesis/water-breathing - born to the waters, Lhi can control water easily.

dream walking - Lhi can enter and interact with the dreams of those willing or unopposed, and should the dreamer reject them, they must leave. They use this to sing to their children and interact with mortals they are curious about.

elemental breath - as a dragon would have

saltaremancy - dance/somatic components is how they cast most magic!

resurrection (*with conditions) - if Lhi is 'slain' on a mortal plane, they return to their lair/realm to 'respawn', and this usually takes a while depending on the injury and if any aid is rendered to them

dimension jumping/portalmancy - Lhi is a serial dimension jumper, and can form portals relative to their current size to travel through. This is done using their spear as a conduit, and without it it's more like a ritual cast.

Veil Piercer (weapon) - a spear forged from glass and enchanted with Lhi's magic. It has limited shifting abilities (it can become any polearm, and can be broken to be more shank-like). It can't actually hurt you, but it may have some funny magic effects on you if you get stabbed with it.

weaknesses:

lair - when in a mortal realm or otherwise out of their lair, they are less powerful and considered vulnerable, and cannot draw upon their full godly power rampantly.

water domain - they need to recharge their magics at areas with water.

cursed - under a divine curse to always tell the truth when asked, but they can say it however they like.

fire and pyromancy - they literally carry around a hand fan to fan themself off in hot weather

divine light - what most would consider 'holy light' is irritating for them

false mortality - their body can sustain damage in any mortal realm and they will need to sleep it off, or get poofed and need to 'respawn' if they sustain too much damage.

fair play - they can be contained by magicked means, but may break out eventually depending on spell strength. if they are restrained, magic is difficult to cast as they cast with somatic components

divine law - they cannot use their god-blooded power upon a non-godly being!

gunnysacking - Lhi bottles things up. It does not end well for them usually.

Bio (WIP):

Legend says that long ago, the gods reigned, but they were distant and lofty, and their presence could not touch the mortal realm in anything but esoterics.

And so they endeavored to have children that could lay foot on planar soil. Courting mortal spouses, they produced beings less powerful by the touch of their mortal blood, but capable of interacting with the mortal realms freely.

Born to the watery abyss was Lhi, a great abyssal serpent who nested in the deep and brightened the life of the seas. Yet, as legend says, they were lonely, and took a pearl into their claws to form the first dragon egg. From there their brood grew and grew, until dragons of all shapes lived in every realm, sky land and sea. No matter how far they strayed, their brooder would always sing to their dreams if the beasts so reached out to them for it.

Legends also speak of a war between them and their cousin over the eternal war of 'knights and dragons', of a spear forged of glass used to pierce their hide that they reclaimed from their own wound, and of a pocket of their lair realm that is fractured out of time and forever spiraling until it's set right...

But as Lhi will say, through curled lips, legends are things warped by time and tongue, and you should always just see for yourself!

So, I’m paying close attention to Sunny’s eye (the one that Basil shanked) in your Ethereal Route AU, and I had this weird imagination of that eye socket becoming something like extra storage space when he gets that hang of his ghost powers, and whenever he needs something he just sticks his hand in there like you would a bag and rummages around until he finds what he’s looking for like “No, that’s the picnic basket… No, that’s my backpack… Why is Mewo in here? Aha! Here’s my knife!”

But in actuality, Sunny's eye design is purely a cosmetic thing for him- if he were to die in Ethereal Route, one of his physical eyes would be put of commission due to him going down the True End. And I thought it'd be cool if his bad eye, when fixed as a ghost, would be a hollow hole while a glowing, floating eye sits in there instead.

If you need a reference for what I'm thinking of, think of the Pokémon Duskull, where it has one eye that kinda drifts between eye sockets lmao same idea here just with one socket.

But I did have the idea that Sunny's title in Headspace as The Dreamer would slightly carry over in The Afterlife. So he does have infinite inventory in the form of the "Pocket" mechanic lmao

“How are you so calm?” Ace asks in confusion. “We heard- you tried to kill them! Not that I blame you for that, definitely not, because Davy Jones knows I was ready to rush down there and kick their asses if Deuce hadn’t literally sat on me, but how can you be so fucking calm right now?”

Shanks smiles. It’s not a nice smile.

“Oh, I’m very much not,” he says amiably, ignoring the way the other Spades flinch slightly as he allows his Voice to reflect how he actually feels. “I am, in fact, furious. Really fucking furious, actually. And I still very much want to kill that sorry excuse for a doctor.“

“But-”

“But killing them now would be kinder than having them live with the consequences of their actions, as Buggy quite rightly pointed out to me. Even if the thought of sending them to Captain so he can deal with their bullshit is very tempting.”

Soooo... here we are, after 3 and a half years, 30 chapters later, about 280 000 words in, this fic comes to an end. Not completely, as there are two sequels planned, but it is still an ending (and one you're probably going to yell at me for xD)

It has been a wild ride, not gonna lie. I never expected this fic to take off as it did, or for so many people to jump on the Buggy appreciation train! It's been terrifying and amazing, and none of that would have been possible without you all, so I really wanted to thank you for everything.

It's been three and a half years since I posted the first chapter of this fic, and I had no idea what would happen (it was supposed to be a short crack fic, Davy Jones damn it!)

And yet, here we are today, you and me and all of us, and I am so glad this happened. I met some of my best friends through this fic, got a whole bunch of amazing enablers on the discord server (you know who you are, and I adore you all), bettered my writing, got through some seriously though times, and always, always you all were here for me. Your comments have brightened so many of my darker days, and I cannot thank you enough for this.

So, here we are today, on the last chapter of *We still stand proud* but not on the last chapter of this story that now links us together.

If all goes well, the sequel should be out sometimes this summer (though no promises, as life can happen and disturb the best laid plans of mens and writers!) and we'll head into the Baltigo arc (Aka dumping the PPA - Pirate Parent Association - on top of Dragon) together!

RAINBOW SEASON LP & A Dark Desert Drive with No Lights

It's been a decade since I released a "full length" record. The first time up, I was just learning music production. I had never recorded anything myself before (not entirely true; I had recorded a short film score ((STILL LOVER)) on a portable multi-track), and my understanding of the process was from what I gleamed from observing my friend produce my first record, which was purely an instrumental one. While I had some production credits on that, my role was in composition, instrumentation and performing, not in tracking, or any of the studio stuff associated with recording records. Up to that point, I had been in and out of bands, mostly just playing electric guitar. But the opportunity appeared because I felt like I could do it. The thought just sprang up in my head, and like the field of dreams, it had to be done.  

It was an intense ordeal, since I had no clue, and was left to learn everything myself, from the ground up. But that process taught me an invaluable lessons; that if you want to do something way outside your competence, it can still be done. Dive head first, break shit, learn, and if you're still excited, do it again was the ethos. You have that bounce back energy with youth & there never is anything to lose. Time refines process, but process comes before quality even after refinement. You never really know quality (it's an intangible), but you always know process & that's easier to refine. 

My time in music happened in a similar way to filmmaking. It was the start of the digitalization of media. Computers and soundcards and emulation and plugins and as important, digital aggregators where making the home recording possible, and the barriers to entry affordable. All that was left was the energy, the desire and the doing.

In 2007 I released a short instrumental record, A DAY LATE: INSTRUMENTALS FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS under my project alias at the time, SHANKS AND THE DREAMERS. My friend Ray P headed the production. He had recorded a couple of DIY albums (they still hold up) for his own projects and was a super fan of Steve Albini's style and methodology. We did the tracking in a music space (Bassland Studios) in Santa Ana California headed by OC electronic music pioneer Alex X. from the project of the same name BASSLAND (location where I shot a film called "my break ups into a million pieces"). A DAY LATE had six tracks and it took nearly 2 years to complete. Scheduling the sessions, mixing, tracking, school, work, and balancing my first love, film, expanded the production cycle way past what I had anticipated.

As a son of first-generation immigrants, my life seemed completely foreign and wayward to my parents. They had no idea where I got my interest in music, as I had never played an instrument before, except after high school, while in college, picking up my first guitar while I studied at UCLA.  Though the seeds were planted much earlier, and maybe I'll write about that in a different time. In any case, all was upheaval. It's hard to transpose an understanding now, to how things were. At that time, my choices were limited, because my understanding was completely limited. So, I could only see two viable options. Go back to school, or work at a coffee shop for the rest of my life (this binary seems incredibly naive and silly, but I suppose that's how it looks for large swarms of people). There were no career aspirations in art, even though all my time was spent doing it because I was disconnected from that reality even existing. It was an impossibility. And of course, that impossibility was just an illusion. But an illusion is no different than a reality, without the tools to break through.

In any case, and to the relief & constant campaigning from my parents, I headed back to school for a graduate degree. This experience made me an advocate at dissuading most from going through the same mistake. It is part of my story, and I would not change it in any way, but when asked, I offer the truth. And that truth is that for the majority, there are much better options and routes. 

And that leads me the last full-length record I did many years ago. A month after I shot my thesis project, I recorded my first full-length record under SHANKS AND THE DREAMERS (it had turned more or less into a band at this time), "MY DARLING DIA". It took a few intense months of education, assembling the tools, learning the programs, writing the songs, and tracking.  And all of it was a giant fuck up for the most part. But it was the single greatest music production lesson I ever learned. It was a condensed, intense education, full of "Skin In the Game" and no help or resources other than my partner at the time (Art Toussi) and localized friends in the scene (bands) and of course, the web. To my giant relief, almost every question had an answer on some forum once you filtered through the arguments. And some of the tools I gathered for that project still sit in my studio (music hardware lasts much longer than the digital stuff). Here we were, a local two-piece band out of Orange County Californian, self-producing an entire record, sitting in one of the top NY Mastering Studios, where a single compressor cost more than the whole production & still completely clueless, but feeling accomplished & wild-eyed. Oddly enough, neither of was thought of ourselves as musicians really. We both had wholly different lives with trajections that had nothing to do with music.

Which leads me to this. My first full-length record under my project MIRS, RAINBOW SEASON is coming out later this year. While I've been recording EP's and singles for the last several years under MIRS, I had assumed that a full-length project was out of the scope, as each EP was thought of as my last time recording (interestingly, music had always been regulated as a side project until the last couple years when I dropped compartmentalizing everything).  But, with time and refinement usually bring in something else. Help. And ever since CANYON, MIRS has had lots of help. So what was once a solo endeavor now has the assistance to take the means of communication into another space. 

And that all changed because one thing was missing. The desire to repeat & expand the process, something that I had always wanted to do with this new project, but never allowed myself to go all the way. It was another glass ceiling. That's what they always are. 

It took a long time to get to CANYON and the merging of music & film, but not surprisingly, it's just another beginning.

it’s time for part 2 of the zodiac based Carot cards. Horn cards are horizontal instead of vertical because they’re meant to be placed above the three other suites which lay side by side. the last two suites are tentatively named the Travelers and the Island and now that i know what direction i want to take with them i’ll hopefully get through those in between work. anyway, here’s some lore.

Horn Signs

Horn signs are the second half of the rabbit/hare zodiac system. When a rabbit or hare is born they have sharp little starter horns encased in rubbery membranes that fall off soon after birth. These horns will eventually shed in a process similar to teething when they get older, but before that they’re basically baby’s first shank. A nasty natural surprise for any predator looking for an easy meal or any parent who gets too tired to keep track of the pointy bits on their child.

Your horn sign correlates to how many points your birth horns had. Again, no one takes this seriously lest people start catching their death of prophesy. But since horn points are the way that many parents initially tell kits apart in litters where they look very similar, it’s fun to joke about.

The Horn Suite

1 The Cut Worm: luck, brushes with disaster, and hope. This sign is very rare because to qualify for it you would either have a second horn so small that it’s just a bump on the skull under the skin, or you wouldn’t be born with a second horn at all. While the odd super stubby horn shows up once in a blue moon, missing either horn completely is a sign that the kit is missing pieces of skull, which makes this birth defect life threatening at best.

Some see the Worm as the simple ‘dodged a bullet’ sign and think of it as a totally positive symbol of natural good luck/perseverance. And it can be! But dodging a bullet still means you had to get shot at in the first place, and it doesn’t mean other less fatal bullets don’t hit. Bullets have a tendency to travel in packs. This makes the Worm a complicated sign. It is scars and struggle and survivor’s guilt, but also joy and absolute cussedness when it comes to comes to life. If the universe wants them dead then it can come over and do it itself. Oooh~ you gonna let biology try to do your dirty work? Fuckin’ coward.

2 The Message: curiosity, knowledge, and questions about yourself. Message signs are very introspective. And outrospective. Just spective all over really. What are you willing to do to obtain knowledge? How free you are with information in general? Do you keep all thoughts to yourself? Do you gossip constantly? How good are you at reining in your curiosity? Would it literally kill you to mind your own business?

3 The Sea Hare: seeking and accepting the truth no matter how weird. These signs are believers, dreamers, and realists all at once. The vaguest sign. Weird things always seem to happen to them. Or maybe it’s not that weird things are always happening to them but that they notice and accept the weird things that happen to everyone else as real instead of brushing it off as dreams or tricks of the light. They hate liars or people who embellish facts for whatever reason because they believe that truth is always stranger and more interesting than fiction.

4 The Cocoon: change and liminality. The world is an ever shifting mess and Cocoon signs are more apt to revel in and pay attention to the strange in between spaces. These rabbits are always on journeys. Physical, intellectual, spiritual, whatever, what many would consider destinations end up be rest stops for them before they wander back into the liminal spaces that call to them.

5 The Pepper: navigating risk for personal pleasure. Will this plant get you super high or kill you? Is this person dangerous or just exciting? Are the odds in your favor? Let’s find out. Pepper signs are willing to at least entertain the ideas for a lot of risky business if they think something wonderful can come from it. The ‘take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!’ sign. Their level of common sense usually determines life expectancy (which is true for all creatures but ESPECIALLY these rabbits good lord).

6 The Fungi: personal relationships and connection. Fungi signs are always seeking real connection. If they like you and you show them love and or respect they’re ride or die for you. Good at reading people and figuring out what makes them tick, they can either be the important connective tissue in any community or manipulators who can woo anyone to their side. Depends on how much of an asshole they are.

7 The Hawk Pyre: healing and cycles. When a hawk dies, it burns and burns until there’s nothing but ash and a tiny egg. Rabbits believe this cycle happens endlessly, that the same hawks have had endless lives in endless cycles since hawks turned up in the world. Rabbits under the Hawk sign are very in tune with the cycles of the world. The cycle of seasons, aging, crops, mistakes, fashion, abuse, ect, it’s all patterns. Patterns that they’re good at spotting, flowing with, and breaking. Need someone to help you get your life back together after a tragedy or give pretty good weather forecasts? Ask a Hawk sign! Or don’t, because none of this is real.

8 The Lantern: knowing what is actually worth spending time being worried about. Not everything in the dark is a monster, but that doesn’t mean warning signs are to be ignored. Lantern signs are good at reading situations, especially when it comes to danger and opportunity. They’re good advisers and listeners, able to make connections easily and take many things into consideration at once. Rabbits joke that good warren leaders are usually Lanterns and shitty ones have had their candles blown out long ago.

The Void (2 of these): either something is horribly wrong or everything is fine. I don’t have to explain which card means what, that’s obvious right? Right?
