Found some footage of unhinged!reader training rookies:
https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMS8vnswe/
(Hi! I love your works, you're amazing!!)
I’M DYING LOL AND IT WORKS SOMEHOW. So, that got me thinking how would she train them…. Now we turn it into a Drabble/blurb [Confession: I don’t know the difference between those two yet LOL] Happy reading! Also greetings! Thank you so much, always so nice seeing you around. Thanks for following along!!! :D
Tumblr media
Unqualified, Unhinged, and Unforgettable
Summary: A bunch of excited, hopeful rookies have the absolute displeasure honor of being trained under you.
Word Count: 700+
Main Masterlist | Earth’s Mightiest Headache Masterlist
Tumblr media
The rookies were excited. Nervous, but excited.
After all, they’d been assigned to training with one of the Avengers. A respected, battle-hardened legend. Probably someone like Steve Rogers. Or maybe Natasha Romanoff! God, even Sam Wilson would be incredible.
“Wait,” One of them whispered. “Who’s that?”
You walked onto the training mat holding a stick of string cheese like a cigarette, wearing mismatched socks and aviators. You pointed the cheese at them.
“Morning, nerds.”
The recruits glanced at each other.
“…Are you the trainer?” One asked hesitantly.
You bit the cheese, chewed, and nodded. “Absolutely. Avengers’ top strategic mind. Fun fact, I have never successfully used a revolving door. You’ll respect me soon enough though.”
One recruit hesitantly raised their hand. “Why are you barefoot?”
“I fight better when grounded to the earth’s vibrations,” You replied. “Also I couldn’t find my shoes.”
And so began the most absurd training session in S.H.I.E.L.D. history.
-
Hour 1:
You paired them off. “First, pick a partner. Then pretend they just betrayed you in a high-stakes casino heist.”
They hesitated, looking around at each other as they tried to process the instruction. You shouted, “Feel the betrayal! Feel the drama! Slap them if you need to!”
One poor recruit started sobbing. Another screamed, “I LOVED YOU, TYLER,” and tackled their partner into a fountain.
You applauded. “Amazing. Raw and painful. That’s real combat.”
-
Hour 2:
You rolled a blender onto the mat with duct tape, Christmas lights, and three timers.
“This,” You announced dramatically, “is your bomb.”
“That’s a blender,” Someone whispered slowly.
You leaned in, deadly serious. “That’s what they want you to think.”
The rookies huddled, genuinely trying to figure it out. One made the mistake of cutting the red wire (which was actually a Twizzler). The blender turned on and shot glitter everywhere.
“That was a decoy,” You told them solemnly. “Now you’re covered in regret and sequins.”
-
Hour 3:
You took them on a “field simulation” which turned out to be a surprise shopping trip to IKEA.
“Navigate this labyrinth. Assemble a chair. Use only hex keys and trauma.”
Two recruits got lost in the kitchen model displays. One called you from inside a wardrobe. You refused to help.
“If you can’t escape IKEA,” You said, eating a meatball with your bare hands, “How will you escape Hydra?”
-
Aftermath
When the rookies returned to HQ, some crying, some covered in glitter, and one holding an emotional support fern; they were never the same.
But they were better, somehow. Sharper and unpredictable. Capable of disarming actual bombs and Swedish furniture with nothing but rage and a plastic fork.
Bucky found you later in the common room, sitting on the couch, eating marshmallows with chopsticks and watching a documentary on nuclear fission at max volume. You were also wearing his hoodie, which meant you were either thriving or about to cause an international incident.
He leaned in the doorway, arms crossed. “You turned those rookies into emotionally unstable weaponized gremlins.”
You didn't look away from the TV. “I prefer the term ‘innovative prodigies.’”
“They challenged Sam to a duel using plungers and grief metaphors.”
“They need to learn how to weaponize emotion. That’s day three material.”
“They built a working trebuchet and launched my motorcycle onto the roof.”
You finally turned to look at him. “And did it not work?”
Bucky stared at you. “You trained them for one day.”
You gave him a slow blink, then gently offered him a marshmallow with the chopsticks. “You love me.”
“I love you,” He said flatly, taking the marshmallow. “I also think you might be a war crime in human form.”
You grinned. “That’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever said to me.”
He walked over and dropped his head into your lap with a tired sigh, arm slinging around your waist. “Next time you train anyone, I’m sedating you first.”
“Won’t happen but that’s fair,” You said, petting his hair with one chopstick. “But you have to admit… they’re kind of unstoppable now.”
From down the hallway came a loud bang, a screech of victory, and someone yelling, “FOR SCIENCE AND THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!”
You sipped juice from your “World’s Best Trainer” mug and said softly, “My legacy begins.”
Bucky just groaned. “God help us all.”

HIYAA i really wanted to send a request for your more than married event 😛 can i request Karasu and 🍑🍦thank you xx
HEYYY!! ofc !
a karasu tabito peachy ice cream :)
Tumblr media
જ⁀♡⊹。° you can hear it in the silence
♡ a/n — for my more than a married couple event!
♡ content — karasu tabito x gn! reader, gn! reader, best friends to lovers, nickname like 'babe' used (once), they are the silliest billies, flirting, oblivious friends to lovers
♡ synopsis — karasu tobito had always just been your best friend, but could this program change that?
Tumblr media
When you stepped into the apartment for the marriage simulation, the last person you expected to see lounging on the couch was Karasu Tabito.
He looked up from his phone, his signature smirk appearing the moment he saw you. “Well, well, well. Look who’s my lucky partner.”
You blinked, caught off guard. “Tabito? You’re in this program?”
“Surprised?” he teased, leaning back like he owned the place. “What can I say? I thought I’d add ‘model husband’ to my list of talents.”
You rolled your eyes, setting your bag down. “Yeah, that’s a real stretch.”
He laughed, the sound warm and familiar. It was so him—effortlessly charming, with just a hint of mischief.
You and Karasu had been friends for years, ever since middle school. He was the kind of person who lit up every room he walked into, his confidence and humor making him impossible to ignore.
But while most people saw only his cocky, carefree exterior, you knew there was more to him than that. You’d seen him at his lowest, too—nursing injuries, doubting himself, pushing harder than anyone else to chase his dream.
And now, here you were, thrown into a “marriage” with him.
“What are the odds?” he said, still grinning as you unpacked.
“Apparently higher than I thought,” you muttered, trying not to think too hard about how small the apartment was—or how close you’d be to him for the next few weeks.
At first, it wasn’t much different from hanging out as friends.
Karasu made it easy, cracking jokes and treating the whole thing like some elaborate prank. “You know,” he said one evening while you cooked dinner, “we could totally mess with the other couples. Pretend we’re, like, madly in love or something. Really sell it.”
You snorted. “You think you can pull that off?”
He gasped, clutching his chest like you’d wounded him. “I’m offended. I’m very convincing.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Prove it.”
Without missing a beat, he turned to you, his expression shifting into something softer, more serious. “Babe,” he said, his voice low and intimate. “You’re the only one for me.”
You froze, heat rushing to your face. “Okay, stop,” you said, shoving him lightly.
He laughed, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes that you couldn’t quite place.
As the days went on, the lines between “pretend” and “real” started to blur.
It was in the little things—how he always made sure your coffee was exactly how you liked it, or how he stayed up late to help you with the program’s assignments, even when he didn’t have to.
And then there were the moments you couldn’t ignore, like the way his gaze lingered on you just a little too long, or how his teasing felt less like a joke and more like a test.
You tried to brush it off. After all, this was Karasu. He flirted with everyone.
But then one night, everything changed.
It was late, and the two of you were sitting on the couch, the glow of the TV casting soft shadows across the room.
“I’m glad it’s you,” he said suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence.
You turned to him, confused. “What?”
He shrugged, not meeting your eyes. “This whole thing. I’m glad it’s with you.”
Your heart skipped a beat. “Tabito…”
“I’m serious,” he said, his voice quieter than usual. “I know I act like an idiot sometimes, but…you mean a lot to me. More than I probably let on.”
You stared at him, your chest tightening. “Why are you telling me this now?”
He laughed softly, running a hand through his hair. “Because I’m tired of pretending it’s not true. And because I’m an idiot who doesn’t want to lose his best friend without at least trying.”
“Trying what?” you asked, your voice barely above a whisper.
He finally looked at you, his dark eyes filled with something raw and unguarded. “This. Us. Whatever this could be.”
You kissed him first.
It wasn’t planned, and it definitely wasn’t part of the simulation. But the moment your lips met, everything else faded away—the program, the rules, the fear of ruining your friendship.
It was just you in this moment, save for the little point total displayed in your living room going up by 10 points.
For the first time, you let yourself believe that maybe, just maybe, this could work.
The program ended a week later, and you both stood outside the apartment, staring at the door as if crossing that threshold would change everything.
“So,” he said, slipping his hands into his pockets. “What now?”
You smiled, your heart swelling with hope. “Now we figure it out.”
He grinned, his usual confidence returning. “Good. Because I’m not letting you get rid of me that easily.”
You laughed, feeling lighter than you had in weeks.
Whatever came next, you knew you’d face it together.

What Remains of Winter
Read on Ao3; https://archiveofourown.org/works/66008359
————————————————————————————
Chapter 3
Can you see it?” Yelena tapped the tablet screen with her fingernail - painted black and chipping - impatient for a response.
It displayed a 3D scan of a building, entirely x-ray, like a blueprint. Within that diagram were a multitude of infrared figures wandering about.
“What am I looking for?” I mumbled, suddenly feeling overcome with regret for deciding to ‘bond’ with the team.
“If I tell you it defeats the purpose of our exercise.” Her strictness gave me war flashbacks to my Eastern European piano teacher of years gone by. I shuddered.
“Those are people,” I traced around the screen, feeling less than smart knowing that every other person in this room right now probably had the answer Yelena was looking for.
“Yes…” She drawled, waiting.
“I’m not sure what the point of this exercise is, Yelena.”
She ripped the tablet from my hands and pointed, frustrated, “Those yellow lines are tripwires. That red dot? A mine. Those blue squares in the corners are all security cameras,” She shoved the tablet into my lap and reclined on the couch, “And yes, those are people.”
“But what’s the point of it?”
“We think it would be beneficial for you to understand how our world works,” Ava started, “I mean, isn’t that how your Avengers worked so well? They all came from the same world, so to speak.”
”Ironman had his… What's its name, ‘Alexa’? No, ‘Siri’?” Alexei spoke with his hands, waving them about for emphasis.
“Jarvis,” Bucky clarified, leaning against the adjacent wall, watching my exercise intently.
“So you want me to do what exactly?”
“Right now? We want you to learn how to navigate this map and it’s HUD. In an ideal world we’ll never have to go into battle again and can lounge in this boujee living room forever,” Yelena grinned and stretched her arms above her head, “But we don’t live in an ideal world. So, when we inevitably do need to… defend ourselves, it’s always useful to have an extra pair of eyes and ears.”
Bucky pushed himself off the wall, striding towards us, “You don’t have to go in guns blazing, just feed us information about our surroundings. That kind of assistance is something we’re missing, you could fulfil that role-”
“Maybe,” Ava interjected, “She doesn’t seem to grasp it.”
“Yes, because this is my first time seeing anything remotely like this. I can’t just immediately become some military-level, super soldier tactician,” I retorted, my pride getting the better of me, “I’ll figure it out.”
Yelena slapped my shoulder as she left me on the parting words, “Let us know if you need help.”
“Don’t drag me into this,” Walker shouted from the other end of the room, causing Bucky’s lips to stretch into a grin.
I am a painfully proud person. I can admit that. The fear of insignificance or average-ness has me in a vice-tight grip every single day. My worth is tied to my intelligence and so, when I was faced with that tablet, I was worthless. As I sat on the floor of my living room for days on end I rotated the 3D building model. I could see each tripwire, bomb and camera but I was unable to figure out how to disarm them. Each time I tried the trap would only go off and result in the simulation restarting. My mug of coffee had gone cold hours ago and I hadn’t bothered to check the time, I knew I had spent hours pouring over this exercise just this evening. This was the longest it had ever taken me to crack an assignment. I was beyond downtrodden.
I couldn’t even Google this stuff, the internet is vast but even it doesn’t hold instructions for military-grade technology. I scowled at my phone, realising I’d have to sacrifice my pride this one time.
“I’m sorry it’s so late,” I said in lieu of a proper greeting as I opened the front door of my apartment and welcomed the Winter Soldier into my home. I tried to imagine what me just a couple months ago would have said at the thought of Bucky Barnes in her living room. She wouldn’t believe it.
“You really should be asleep,” He murmured, taking the apartment in. My new obnoxiously large salary allowed me to have an exceptionally luxurious home. I was in the penthouse of an already fancy apartment complex. The floor plan was open and the colour scheme dark in a clean, modern way.
Despite Bucky’s words, he looked like the concept of sleep was foreign to him. His hair was pulled back, half up, half down, and his eyes seemed more awake than ever.
“I can’t sleep until I figure out how to use this godforsaken thing,” I groaned, pointing to the tablet on the floor.
“Why is it over there? Is it in the naughty corner or something?” He quipped, looking over at me as if expecting laughter. I was beyond joking.
“This thing is ridiculous,” I huffed. As I bent over to pick it up I became all too aware of the loungewear I had on. My shorts rode up slightly as I bent down and my scoop neck T-shirt nearly exposed the valley of my breasts. I moved quickly, if I didn’t make a scene he wouldn’t notice, right?
”Can you explain it to me? I won’t keep you long, I’m sure you’re exhausted.”
”I have nothing but time,” His voice was flat and humourless again and I feared I had offended his vintage sensibilities.
I sat silently as I listened to him explain how each button and drop-down menu worked. We ran through half a dozen simulations until I was able to complete them without his assistance. It began to feel like a strategy game, until I realised that if I ever actually needed to use these skills I’d be in a life to death situation.
“How can you do this but not use a phone?” A warmth bloomed in my chest as I caught his mouth curling into a smile.
“That’s different”.
“How so?”
He breathes in deeply, as if getting ready for a long overdue rant, “They only need to do one thing; call. I don’t get the point of all this movie player, video game, music app nonsense.”
“So what? You think everybody ought to line up to see the talkies on the weekend and have record players in their living rooms?”
“What can I say,” Bucky’s smile didn’t break, “I’m old fashioned.”
I shrugged and pushed my chair away from the table, “Nothing wrong with that. One sec.”
I hated turning my back on him. I wanted to be able to take in every movement on his face, the ways he revealed his emotions without realising it. I slipped into my bedroom, carefully and quietly, working my plan until Doris Day sang ‘It Had to Be You’ in the speakers laced throughout my home. The elegant strings of the orchestra rose as I padded back into the living room, the tinkling keys of a piano escorted me to my seat across from Bucky.
I answered the question that hung in the air, “My grandmother was really into collecting music back in her day. I lived with her so I’d always play her records. She left her collection to me when she was placed in an old folks home.”
For a split second I feared I had revealed too much about myself. I hated when people asked about my parents for no other reason than I had no answers for them. I never truly knew them, just held onto vague memories and stories of their fairytale romance from my grandmother. That was when she could still talk. As her health deteriorated our conversations became ‘one ring on the bell for ‘yes’ and two for ‘no’’. It pained me to see her, so different from her previous self.
Thankfully Bucky said, “Can I see it?”
The thought of him in my bedroom had my knees weak, I imagined that if I tried to stand up I’d fold back in on myself like a poppet.
“Sure.”
I observed Bucky as he ran a finger along my shelves and shelves of records, moving much faster when he came into contact with the more modern stuff. There were piles and piles of records, some I had never even taken out of their sleeves before. I definitely needed to organise soon.
“She had good taste,” he turned his head back at me with a soft, nostalgic look in his eye that made me want to pounce on him.
“Yeah, she was a real classy lady. She left me, like, all her wardrobe and jewellery and stuff. That’s one of the perks of being the only grandkid, I guess.”
“Do you still have it?”
“Oh yeah. They’re all authentic so they’d probably be worth a lot to real vintage enthusiasts, but I couldn’t let them go.”
“Do you wear them at all?”
He had turned away from the records completely, his attention focused entirely on me. Those steely eyes made me feel stripped down, bare.
“I don’t have the opportunity to. They’re pretty fancy.”
“Wear one to the press conference.”
It wasn’t advice or a question, it was a statement. Somehow it didn’t make me feel demeaned or less than, I felt secure in his control.
Despite that, he continued, “I mean, if you want to-”
I tried to smile as comfortingly as possible, his face was growing flushed and nervous, “No, no. I appreciate that. I wasn’t sure what to wear anyways. That’s one less decision for me to make.”
The silence that followed felt like it lasted an hour. An hour of staring at how his chest rose and fell in an unsteady rhythm. How his hair fell in curtains on the sides of his face. How he flexed his left shoulder, sighing roughly.
“Does it hurt?”
I was pushing it, to ask him about his arm - and by extension his past - was a line I had yet to cross. But I had just thrown myself into it. Bucky seemed to recalibrate, change the course of where his train of thought was headed.
“Yeah, sometimes.”
“Is there anything that helps it?”
“No.”
“You don’t do physio or anything?”
“I don’t think many physios know how to work with what I’ve got going on.”
I tried to wrap my head around his suffering. It was beyond my comprehension. All I could say was, “I’m sorry.”
He rolled his shoulders, relieving tension, “It’s alright to ask about it”.
“No. I’m sorry that happened to you, Bucky.”
The way his expression shifted made me run hot with embarrassment. I shouldn’t have brought it up.
“You didn’t do it,” His voice was tried, gravelly, dismissive.
“I know, it’s just…”
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” He left the room in long strides. I didn’t realise I was holding my breath until I heard my front door close and was left with nothing but the music of times past sounding throughout my home.
3.5.
Bucky POV
Screams echoed throughout the hall, hitting me like a force field. I clambered to my feet and ran down the sterile, medical corridor. The lack of decoration was exactly what gave away the location; HYDRA, Siberia, Russia.
The cries continued, it sounded like a struggle was occurring, a desperate fight. I continued to run and run and run in the direction of the shrieks. The hallway felt never ending but the voice was growing closer and more hoarse and exhausted by the second.
The sight of it was enough to bring me to my knees.
Y/n forced into the Memory suppressing Machine. Her face was contorted with pain and her fist clenched so tightly I could see her nails drawing blood from her palms. I watched as the scientists stood by, ignoring me. I tried to yell at them to stop, to beg on her behalf, but no sounds followed. I attempted to rise from my knees but I was cemented to the floor, forced to watch as she writhed in pain, trying in vain to escape from HYDRA, as I once had.
She shuddered and convulsed violently, until she suddenly stilled, submitting to the pain. Beads of sweat rested on her forehead like a crown of thorns, the blood from her palms had smeared onto the arms of the chair that held her.
I tried to move to her but I was like a puppet with no master. Every effort was useless, she was theirs.
A man in a white scientist’s coat strode behind her. He lifted his arm to reveal a pistol in his hand, cocked at her head. My breaths were ragged and my failed screams turned my throat raw. I was pathetic, I couldn’t save her.
The sound of the bullet was deafening.
I screamed as I shot awake. My shirt and bed sheets were soaked through with sweat and the pillow beside me was crumpled in the vice grip of my bionic arm. For once, I felt glad to be alone. I was a danger to everyone around me without even fully comprehending it.
I took my shirt off with such vigour I could hear the seams tear. The shower head poured freezing water onto my back and I relished the shock. I wouldn’t think of them, I would focus on the water. I tried in vain to turn my brain off.
But it kept coming back to her and the way she spoke to me that evening.
She wanted to know about me. She was real and honest. Not some nagging reporter begging for a headline about the cruel Winter Soldier.
No, she wanted whatever she thought Bucky Barnes was. Not this reality of panic attacks, failed therapy appointments and showers so freezing they could be classified as self harm. A world where the night sky is nothing more than a dark ceiling without a star. I didn’t want to force this mess into her life, uproot the lifestyle she had in that pretty little apartment.
I’m a stain on everything good. Like a bad smell on polyester, impossible to get out.
A horrible man.

When I was a young excited physics student I went down to my advisor and asked for a job in a lab. Those of you who are in the sciences may recognize this as exceedingly common, most schools with science departments will hire undergrads for their labs both to give the undergrads experience and to have someone comparatively cheap to do the least skilled labor in those labs.
For me, the lab I was sent to was one doing cool photonics projects and I was assigned to a guy who was doing the theoretical modeling for them and I got put on a side project for them to develop a method to double check their results using Monte Carlo simulations.
Put bluntly, I toiled away in the little cubicle they had me in for about half a year before I transferred to a different school without ever having produced anything of any particular value other than a Monte Carlo simulation whose temperature readings were not taking into account the existence of a heat sink and therefore got overwhelmed by thermal photons in a completely inaccurate and unhelpful way.
Ultimately, many tasks, farmed out like this in a speculative way to undergrads, fail, certainly it's not exceptional that mine did and I learned a lot about the process in the process, so it wasn't wasted time for me, but it produced absolutely nothing the lab could use to further its results.
This is where it turns from a little anecdote about my work history into a morality tale, because what I have thus far deliberately failed to tell you is that the lab I was assigned to is a provider of radar services to the US Military. Had I produced anything of any value whatsoever the work I did would have been used by the US military to help with its capacity to deliver bombs. This is, unfortunately, as those of you who are in the sciences may recognize, also exceedingly common. Luckily, and through no foresight or moral thinking of my own, simply the inexperience of youth, I produced nothing of value but view the path they tried to set me down as a grim warning of what might have been.
I'm not asking for forgiveness, the harm I might have done was not done by me, although I'm also sure was done without my help. They didn't need it to be me they just needed someone with basic calculus knowledge who wouldn't think too hard about the connection between the work and the world, and they were happy enough that particular warm body was me.
So this is my plea, if you're young and getting involved in the sciences because you're passionate about knowledge and understanding our place in the universe. When you go to get that job in that lab that's such a good stepping stone to the next thing you want to do, take a second and look into where that lab's funding is coming from. If it turns out it's the military, maybe then take another second and really deeply consider what kind of thing your work can be used to do and if you would like some of the most bloodthirsty people on the planet to be able to do that thing because of your help.
I got lucky that I didn't help, but I'm hoping that with this warning you might be able to not help on purpose which is a greater moral good than what I managed.

I became good at pretending. I became so good that after a while the lines blurred between my truth and fiction. And sometimes, when I did a really good job of pretending, I even fooled myself. -Ruta Sepetys
The order came as no surprise.
Maven hardly expected their assignment to come to a close so soon, and while she’d hoped that their next task would be something more active, like rescuing the people or destroying the camp, Seungmin was right—to efficiently learn more about the Nokken’s efforts against humanity, they needed to gather all of the data they could find.
She hated when Seungmin was right.
She also hated when their superiors agreed with him.
It always inflated his already behemoth ego.
Of all the things she’d missed about him, dealing with his ego was not included.
He’d always acted like he possessed the wisdom and knowledge of a man twice his age, which only made him seem doubly preposterous since he was clueless and unperceptive as a boy half his age.
She used to think he just had a healthy self-assurance compared to her crippling self doubt. After he shucked her like a winter parka, she’d realized that she was uncomfortable about his ego because he had an inflated sense of self worth, not because she was used to being insecure.
“I’ll have a document drawn up by tonight.” Captain Lee said to her after Seungmin excused himself from the office. He’d said something about meeting up with someone and ducked out before Lee excused them.
Maven still sat primly before his desk, hands joined on her lap.
The Captain of the Vesper went on. “It will detail generally what I want from the lab; I’ll send it directly to University Station where the techs can come up with a tool to get the job done and the agent in charge can work with Lieutenant Seo to come up with logistics for the operation.”
Maven watched him speak, unsure of how to respond. He seemed to be speaking to himself, gaze still firmly focused on his computer screen. She hadn’t realized until precisely that moment that she couldn’t quite pinpoint how old he was. He had the physical fitness of a young guy in his twenties, but the set of his hardened face could have made him forty-five. It didn’t help that he spent most of his life on an aircraft carrier and half of the lines and veins evident on her face were directly caused by how much sun exposure he got.
The man could have been a model for a tanning commercial.
“You and Agent Kim will likely be set to perform this operation in two or three days. I expect to see two or three practice drills.” Captain Lee said. His voice droned with a hint of a southern drawl.
Unsure how they would execute practice drills for him and wondering if he planned for them to stay onboard the Vesper for a few days, Maven frowned. “Sir?” She hadn’t even brought her toothbrush.
The captain’s eyes finally slid sideways to behold her, like he couldn’t believe he had to explain himself. “The simulation room at University Station is set up to record sessions. Lieutenant Seo is obligated to include your mission practices as part of his supervision of Almost Summer.”
“Oh.” Maven wondered why no one had told her that before. She also wondered how many of their interactions had been recorded and shared. She didn’t want all of the death glares she’d given Seungmin during operation briefings to be on her record. It was hard enough to maintain a passable reputation as a former desk jockey.
She made a mental note to better school her behavior.
Pulling his hands away from his keyboard, Captain Lee turned his shoulders to face her squarely. For a few minutes, his sharp features rested into a terse expression as he examined her closely.
Maven didn’t dare move.
She felt like she’d been sent to her parents room for discipline.
While she’d been an intelligence analyst, her exposure to Captain Lee had been limited to official and formal capacities, where she’d been part of a crew or a team, and never addressed by him directly.
As a newly-minted Special Agent, she’d been in his office twice, both times held under intense scrutiny.
His heavy stare was beginning to make her itch.
She cleared her throat. “Is there anything else, sir?”
Lee Minho inhaled deeply, as though he’d been holding his breath, or possibly had forgotten to breathe. “Almost Summer is an incredibly important assignment, Agent Spanaway; it has only increased in importance as it uncovers more data. Do you understand? You are monitoring one of the most significant Nokken presences on Earth, and human lives are intimately at stake.”
Confused, Maven answered in the affirmative. No pressure.
When had she given the impression that she was taking their job lightly?
Lee's eyes narrowed. “Your assignment is highly sensitive.”
“Yes sir.” Seems somewhat obvious.
“It cannot afford to be afflicted by the graceless handling of your partnership.”
A minute ticked by in silence. Oh.
In other words, get over the personal inhibitions and work together like a proper team.
Maven nodded dutifully. “I understand, sir.” To create the well-oiled machine that he wanted to see in their partnership, she would have to remove herself entirely, working not as Maven Spanaway, but as VALOR Special Agent Mayhem.
A L M O S T    S U M M E R
University Station had a weight room.
Upon arriving back in Houston, Maven promptly shucked her VALOR uniform, changed into a set of gym clothes, and hustled upstairs to work out some of the ever-increasing frustration over the job that she’d thought would bring her back to life but was only turning out to burden her.
Maybe her first assignment was trial by fire—maybe upon its completion she would have a nice, standard posting either by herself or with a brand new person. Maybe after suffering through Almost Summer, assignment number two would put the wind back in her sails.
Three sets into an extremely satisfying bench press workout, Maven found herself thrown off focus by her music decreasing rapidly in volume. She replaced the bar on the rack and sat up abruptly, eyes snapping over to the radio at the front of the room.
Seungmin stood there, scrolling through the music options, dressed in his sloppy, slouchy basketball shorts that might have been from the nineties and a ratty, oversized t-shirt. Nothing about his frumpy appearance supported his decision to walk around like he was God’s gift to VALOR.
Grumbling under her breath, Maven dropped back down on the bench and reached for the bar again. I definitely wasn’t here first. I don’t need a bit of deference for the music selection. She pushed her way through another few reps, knowing he was undoubtedly turning on some high-tempo rock anime soundtrack.
He’d always thought she should have liked his music because she was a rock fan, and he’d never understood that there was a drastic difference between her rock music and his anime soundtracks. Drums are drums, he’d said.
She finished her fourth set and got up to take some weight off the bar for a drop set when the rapid fire beat of drums and electric guitar came booming out of the speakers overhead.
Typical.
Seungmin sauntered past, pretend-shredding an air guitar against his leg as he headed for the free weights.
It was nauseating to watch.
He paused near her, and flashed a charming smile. “I hope you don’t mind. You know I’ve always loved your music. I just need something a little more energetic to get me through.”
Anger flashed across her face.
He’d walked in and changed her music without a word and then explained himself away like his reasoning was entitlement.
He hadn’t changed at all.
She was already plugging in her headphones. Just because he took the liberty of hijacking her music didn’t mean she had to listen to his.
Seungmin had been affecting her mood too much.
She was allowing him to affect her to the point that the captain was watching her, just waiting for her to screw up and throw a hissy fit over a boy.
She laid down on the bench again, the comforting sounds of her own music playing in her ears. The fact that it drowned out Seungmin's mumbling sing along session was merely a bonus.
Managing eight good reps before she feared she’d have to ask for help to get the bar back on the rack, Maven moved on to her next exercise, looking up only once to see that Seungmin was entirely focused on slow, heavy bicep curls.
He’d improved since they’d last worked out together.
A L M O S T   S U M M E R
Lieutenant Seo found them in the break room an hour later. They had the entire room between them, sitting at different tables, facing opposite directions. As he entered, observing the situation, he rapped his knuckles against the door frame to catch their attention.
Maven looked up first, dropping one foot from the chair she’d had it propped up on.
The senior officer leered at both of them. “We’re sorting out how next to proceed. We’ll have an infil/exfil plan and a target for you, as well as the device to install the trojan horse. Until then, clock out. And don’t kill each other.” Lieutenant Seo scanned them both with severe distaste before turning on his heel and disappearing down the hallway.
Behind her, Seungmin could be heard shuffling around the kitchenette, humming softly to himself.
Ignoring the memory of the version of herself that would have jumped up to join him, lingering near his elbow and trying as hard as she could to get in his way, Maven dropped her forehead back into her hand and went back to reading the eBook displayed on her phone. She’d been in that position for twenty minutes when Seungmin had finished his workout and joined her in the breakroom.
The only reason she hadn’t disappeared into her bedroom with her new free time to read by herself was the cave-like aspect of their rooms. Depressing, claustrophobic, no daylight, no signs of life other than her smarmy ex-fiancé—where Maven sat in the breakroom, she had a window on one side of her, letting in bright, Texas sunlight and a view of the occasional bird, and the door on the other side of her, where numerous VALOR agents passed through to grab coffee or their lunches.
A mug appeared by her hand, filled with something dark that smelled like her favorite tea.
Looking up sharply, Maven leaned back in her chair to create distance between herself and the suddenly-nearby Kim Seungmin. He bent over her table, his tall form lowered by his hand resting beside the mug, offering her a quick, charming smile. “Little bit of cream, little bit of sugar. I trust you still take it that way?”
Genuinely surprised that he’d paid enough attention to take note of that in the first place, much less remember it for over a year, she pushed the cup away. “I don’t take it at all if it comes from you.”
The bitterness seeping into her tone didn’t dissuade him in the slightest. Seungmin pushed the cup back. “Take it. I made myself a cup, so I made one for you. It doesn’t mean anything.” He was edging closer, as though the weight of his own ego caused him to sway forward.
Maven scooted her chair back for more distance. “Fine. Go away.”
With a burst of energy, he straightened and backed away with a brilliant smile. “Enjoy!” He called over his shoulder, striding back to the counter to collect his own mug before sitting back at his table across the room.
The tea was exactly how she liked it.
A L M O S T   S U M M E R
“Hello, Agent Spanaway,” It was Agent Lee Felix who swooped into the room where she’d been sitting for over an hour since Seungmin left, his blue lab coat flapping majestically behind him. He peered over her shoulder, not seeming to noticed the startled way that she leaned away from him. “Are you reading a mystery? I love mysteries.”
Maven closed the book, which prompted him to move away from her and pull the fridge door open. “It’s a thriller, technically. How have you been, Agent Lee?”
She was suddenly acutely aware of the fact that she was still unwashed since having been to the gym and hoped she didn’t smell.
The weapons tech, who was shorter than Maven remembered, pulled a bowl of soup from the fridge and tossed it into the microwave. “Oh, please, call me Felix. And I’ve been fine, thank you. How about yourself?”
As the microwave hummed along behind him, Felix pulled up a seat at her table.
When she hesitated to respond, hundreds of images of tormented and dying people flashing before her eyes, Felix leaned forward intuitively. “Not so good, huh? Would you like to talk about it?” The way his voice softened and his eyes bore into hers made him seem so sincere.
She smiled politely, wishing she could just let it all out. “I can’t, actually, it’s work-related.”
Felix nodded in understanding, and then peered into her then empty mug. “Can I get you more tea?”
Surprised, Maven raised her eyebrows at him. She curled her painted fingernails over the edge of her phone, warning bells ringing in her head. After Seungmin—after trusting him for years and changing her entire life for him, only to be abandoned as though abruptly forgotten—after that, trusting someone’s attention felt like a trap.
“No, I’m fine, but thank you.” She pulled her phone in close, like it could protect her.
In fact, he reminded her a little too much of Seungmin. Flighty, excitable, overly friendly. At least, that’s how Seungmin had been with her. Going through that again was the last thing she wanted.
She hoped Felix was just a generally flirty person. Maybe he just viewed it as casual banter. She wasn’t ready for another person of interest.
The microwave beeped.
Felix scraped his chair back and retrieved his soup, grabbing a spoon from the container on the counter. “Well, Agent Spanaway, I hope your work-related issue goes easy on you, and I look forward to our next inspection.”

The Evolution of Technology in Education
Historically, education has been characterized by using traditional techniques of practice, which include lectures, textbooks, and hands-on activities. While these stay treasured, the appearance of era has brought a wealth of recent tools and assets that enhance the coaching and learning manner.
Technology in education began with the introduction of computers and the internet in classrooms, but it has on account that advanced into an atmosphere that includes smart gadgets, academic software program, on-line gaining knowledge of systems, and virtual studying environments. Schools and universities now contain era in multiple ways, from mixed getting to know models to fully on-line courses. This evolution allows for extra interactive, bendy, and reachable schooling for inexperienced persons of all ages.
The Benefits of Technology Integration in Education
Personalized Learning:
One of the most huge benefits of generation in schooling is its capability to facilitate customized gaining knowledge of reviews. These photos are from the air flow simulation I did yesterday, to find out what impact the wind would have on the structure of the identification buoy. I recorded the animations to make it easier to analyze.
It was fun to do this, I discovered that I can make several different types of fluids, which could be useful in future projects. The article is almost ready, along with the boat and buoy codes.
Here are the charts with results generated from Solidworks:
Tumblr media
Generally I don't do this, but I'll put the translation of the analysis I put in the article here, maybe it can help someone.
Although it is not common to carry out engineering tests in this specific context, we chose to conduct an analysis dedicated to aerodynamic conditions, aiming to understand the effect of wind on the structural integrity of the buoy. To carry out this study, we used Solidworks, making use of the fluid simulation system incorporated into the program.
Initially, we modeled the buoy structure, assigning specific materials to each component. Subsequently, we establish the necessary boundary conditions to faithfully simulate the behavior of the structure in real conditions. In the next step, we created surfaces that represent the wind pressure in the region where it impacts the buoy, and defined the area in which the wind pressure would be applied. The application of wind loads and adjustment of analysis settings were carried out using the “Flow Simulation” tool.
This process allowed an accurate representation of the aerodynamic conditions on the buoy structure. Additionally, we adjust relevant parameters for the analysis, ensuring a comprehensive approach.
The simulation execution culminated in the generation of a comprehensive report, documenting the results obtained. The interpretation of these results provided valuable insights into the structure's performance under simulated aerodynamic conditions. This engineering test highlighted the importance of considering aerodynamic conditions when assessing structural integrity.
It is possible to highlight some fundamental reasons for the importance of this analysis, such as the assessment of structural integrity, assessment of operational safety, design optimization, which can result in savings in materials and manufacturing costs.
The Montagem_boia.SLDSAM model was configured with standard parameters, carrying out 57 iterations to achieve convergent results. The mesh was defined with basic dimensions (Nx = 40, Ny = 9, Nz = 17), and boundary conditions were established to represent the fluid environment of interest.
Tumblr media
The physical time interval considered was 0 seconds, and the CPU time required for the simulation was also recorded. The simulation results revealed an interesting distribution of fluid properties and flow characteristics. The total number of cells in the mesh was 7626, all occupied by the fluid. Among these, 1106 cells were in direct contact with solids.
The mesh dimensions (X,Y,Z) indicated a significant extension of the model, with minimum and maximum variations in each direction. Analysis of the velocity field revealed a range of [0 m/s; 7,510 m/s], indicating different flow regimes within the simulation domain. The pressure varied between [101294.37 Pa; 101430.23 Pa], with a reference pressure of 101325.00 Pa. The temperature remained relatively constant, with values varying from [293.20 K; 293.21 K]. The fluid density showed a minimum variation, within the range of [1.20 kg/m^3; 1.21 kg/m^3].
There was no consideration of factors such as heat in solids, radiation, porous media and gravity to simplify the model to meet the specific objectives of this simulation. Based on the analysis of the images obtained, the reduction in wind speed becomes visible when facing the structure of the identifying buoy.
Notably, the average wind speed in São Paulo, situated at 25km/h, is insufficient to cause damage to the aforementioned structure or to displace it from its original position. It is also worth noting that, when encountering the obstacle represented by the buoy, the wind flow tends to bypass the structure mostly from above, to the detriment of the sides.
This observation suggests an effective resistance of the buoy to direct wind impact, contributing to its stability and structural robustness. The results clearly indicate that the structure's resistance to wind action is remarkable, since the force exerted by the wind did not reach levels that would compromise the integrity or stability of the configuration.
The solidity of the structure in the face of these conditions suggests that the design presents a robust and adequate response to the expected wind loads.
Sorry for any grammatical errors ~

Name: Solora
Sex: Female
Position: Tallest
Bio: Solora is one of the rare female tallest ever to rule the empire. She worked up quite a name for herself over the years. Both good and bad, according to older drones that looked after her. As a mere smeet, Solora was very focused on her upgrade studying while most of her fellow smeets wanted to leave the simulator and explore the surface. She made great progress once becoming a cadet. Solora met another drone named, Vervain. The two of them become close and are a team when given the chance to. Solora’s skillful with weapons, especially bladed ones. She keeps a couple of them under her body armor. During her final assignment on Hobo 13, she and her team are to take the flags of their enemy teams while killing off a giant glorba beast. She was the one who took it down while her teammates got the flag from the others. This has given her the rank of high general. While the scores are being checked, Solora decided to get her own place in the city. She was spotted and hired to do some modeling for a while. Her face was on billboards almost everywhere. This could be because she became a taller. Solora had just the right height and face for the shots.
This when on for some time. Solora even found a passion for singing. She likes to do this whenever it fits her mood. Later in time, she got a callback from her superiors. Tallest Blits is dead. Fallen at the heat of battle by an enemy of the empire. Solora had no chance to mourn about this because SHE was chosen as the new tallest. She was rushed to be measured and geared up into her new robes. Irk needed a new leader. Especially now that one of their enemies has entered their fly zone in orbit. Solora had much to do with such little time. She appointed Vervain as one of her body guards. Pyper as her jester/entertainer drone. Solora leadership did help irk win the battle and she made an example with this victory by having her camera crew snap pictures of the heads of the high ranks soldiers on a stake from the enemy and sending it back to the ruler’s of their planet. A warning to never cross the Irken empire. A ceasefire was settled and there were no further bloodshed. Solora’s reigned for about 500 years before her death, after her pak went under a static shock malfunction that drained out her charging cell. It triggered her automatic 10 minute countdown.
Knowing this is her final moments, Solora made a request to Vervain. She wanted him to go to the control brains and request that they recognize both Magnus and Spectra as potential future tallest. Either one of them is fitted to replace her. Solora also wanted both Vervain and Pyper to work with those tallest. Keep them on track and to not lose themselves in the heat of the moment like she almost did two centuries ago. Her request was granted and both selected irkens were given the same position as tallest. After Solora’s passing, her body was carried off to be recycled back Into the system. While her pak was download into the collective for future generations. There is a monument of Tallest Solora in the city’s square. She’s wearing the very first body armor given to her after she became the new tallest. Others of her generation still pay their respects to that statute and take a moment to remember how things were different during her reign compared to now. Vervain visit that sight more often than most. He had a crush on Solora since they were still trainees. Pyper is the only one who knows this and kept it between them.

hello everyone, i know it's already day 23 of January 2024, literal almost a month after the month ends and is already on another year, but at least i'm here yaaay (i really need to start writing the monthly post a week before said month ends 😭)
December was actually, just as thrilling cliff-hanging as November! thing is my countdown to my other coldplay show was finally down to under 50 days and it was also the end of the very first semester.
just in the true fashion of my life, my adventure this time is: going back and forth between Jakarta and Tasik in under 24 hours (22 hours to be exact!) on a back-to-back journey just for school and seeing my hometown again 😂
so, as you can tell, i have so many assignments and one of them is a practical skill's lab project where i have a typodont (a phantom model of human teeth embedded in wax) and i pretend to apply orthodontic treatment on it to correct the malocclusion. it was not easy at all. it's quite literally a simulation of what will happen and what should i do when i treat an actual patient. the project lasted for almost five months and even the class didn't stop once the semester break came around, that is why i had to go back and forth between Jakarta and Tasik: i don't want to lose my holidays while still having to attend the weekly class 😂
some will say i'm insane because it's so tiring to do so and indeed it was super exhausting. but if you know me, i'm the type to do just about anything for my loved ones (my parents were staying at Tasik to take care of things and it's been a while i visited my grandparents' last resting place) so it was no big deal at all to endure 7 hours of bus trip each and then 1 hour commute to the station/home. a total 16 hours in 48 hours timeframe spent on the road. and it's worth it, every second of it, because i got to relax and work in the middle of lush green and rice fields... it was the very definition of healing time. i was still under the pressure of stress and deadline to finish that last project, but at least i did it while being surrounded by serene nature and with my mum and dad 😂😂😂 it's such a nice drastic change to do wire bending with all my pliers and stainless steel wires and orthodontic brackets with herd of ducks quacking loudly near me and farmers ploughing soil to plant rice seeds... best part? zero pollution! no light/sound/air pollution whatsoever and i get to see amazing sceneries right out of my windows every day! rain every evening to help me and my mum water the plants (which are thriving!) Mt Galunggung in its majestic full view... woah. it's my best treasure tbh nothing else compares
the most unexpected thing was that our class for that subject/project is usually scheduled on Thursday (so for the first back-and-forth journey i made sure to go back to Jakarta on Wednesday and get back to Tasik on Thursday right after the class ended) and for the second week, my prof suddenly requested us to come to the campus on Tuesday, and guess when did he sent the message to inform us? 6 AM on said Tuesday!!!!! oh you couldn't imagine my panic, how am i supposed to be in Jakarta in less than 4 hours!? thankfully my prof is a lenient one and he let me and kak Mandy (who was in Bandung at the time) to join the class from zoom. another good news is that class is to be our closing session for the project, and that i can just send my typodont instead of coming in person to submit the assignment. yet again Allah's plan is always better than my most carefully thought of one 🥺
the rest of the break i get to spend every day at my hometown just recharging my energy and soaking every positive molecule there is, and my mum have this brilliant idea to buy a table tennis equipment!
at first, not fully knowing the impact of my mum's seemingly random decision, i opposed the buying of said table tennis because it's quite expensive. but after it arrived and i got to play against my mum and dad (who happen to be great players!) i finally understand that my mum knew fully well i don't like outdoor sports (solely because i hate the sun getting my face so red lol) so table tennis is the best option! it's so fun to play and i still get to exert my whole body to get that exercising regime my nutritionist has told me years to do so 😂
for new year's eve, the end of 2023 is the quietest one yet. with just my parents, deep in the greens, miles from the city, and just watching Pengabdi Setan 2/Satan's Slaves 2 (exactly my style hahaha getting my dad to watch it!) i moved over to 2024. just saying and sending out my prayers to welcome the new year and hope i can go through whatever i must face in the future. and again, just how i like it, not many fireworks were blasted so it wasn't that rowdy. it almost didn't feel like NYE celebration, all is calm and cool.
i love slow living, far away from the crowded areas, i could quite literally stay in my hometown at my house and just. be there 😂 it's so easy for me because as long as i have my loved ones with me and a roof above my head, enough to live and get by... that is all. to reach that tranquility and peace of mind is one of the highest priority/goal for me. hope one day after i've accomplished my dreams i get to reside and rest where my heart has always been dwelling.
here's to another journey in 2024, i hope we can together make it through. see you in the January post, that as i said in my Nov one, i'm counting down 3 days to my trip to Singapore and 4 days until i see coldplay again, historic moment as i'll be back to the stadium where i first saw the band 7 years ago!!! see you all soon 💙

Simulations suggest only 22 people are required to start a colony on Mars
Tumblr media
The minimal number required to establish a human colony on Mars is 22, according to simulations conducted by a team of computational social scientists at George Mason University. On the arXiv preprint server, the group has posted a paper outlining their simulation.
Scientists are looking at ways to get over the obstacles that stand in the way of setting up a colony on Mars as people around the world consider the prospect of sending people there in the future. The team says that figuring out how many people and what kinds of people would be needed to support a Mars colony is one issue that has to be addressed.
Those with amiable dispositions were to flourish
The team built a model that simulated a Mars colony to determine how many people are necessary to establish a successful colony on Mars as well as the qualities that are most likely to make such a colony successful. They did this by using information from previous projects, such as surveys completed by individuals living in close quarters in the Arctic for extended periods or groups aboard the International Space Station. Additionally, they made an effort to take into account well-known personality factors such as stress tolerance, social skills, and neuroticism level.
The research team ran five simulations, each simulating a colony for 28 Earth years while altering variables between runs, such as the population.
They discovered that 22 people were the absolute minimum. Additionally, they discovered that those with amiable dispositions were, predictably, more likely to flourish on such a mission and help the colony continue. However, they discovered that those with neurotic personalities were more likely to fail their goal and pass away earlier than others, endangering the operation’s overall success.
Colonizing Mars: How SpaceX and NASA Make It Possible
youtube
Face challenges related to psychological and human behavior
The experts stated that future colonists “will face challenges related to psychological and human behavior in addition to the technical and engineering challenges.” They developed an “agent-based modeling” simulation to make sure our Mars explorers cooperate to “better understand” how this might function. Five simulations were performed, each simulating a colony for 28 Earth years.
They assigned the simulation’s settlers to one of four “basic personality types”: neurotic, reactive, sociable, or pleasant. Additionally, they discovered that the pleasant personality type had a higher chance of surviving. Contrary to prior research, we discover that tens, not hundreds, of people with all personality types, are the bare minimum that can result in a sustainable settlement. The 22 Martian inhabitants should function as “high-performing teams” capable of thriving “in isolated and high-stress environments.”
Ideally, such spacemen and women would be accustomed to cramped and frequently chaotic environments, such as those found in
submarines, arctic excursions, aboard the International Space Station, and even battle situations.
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, might meet the criteria following the turbulent few months that X, formerly known as Twitter, has had.

I Am (not so) Atomic
Tumblr media
Last year, i was blessed with a brand new anime obsession: The Eminence in Shadow. It’s a wildly derivative take on the Isekai genre but i can’t help but love this show, man. It slides right into the same vein as Tensura and Overlord, specifically the latter, and considering those two shows have climbed into the upper echelons of my all-time list, Shadow was basically tailored made for me. Truthfully, i had been on the Cid Kageno bandwagon for some time. I remember picking up this manga years ago and falling in love with it by the fourth chapter bu i was the anime that sealed my adoration. This thing was fantastic. The action was kinetic, the animation fluid, and the character work executed perfectly. I was a bit bummed when the show ended. I wanted more Shadow content and i wanted it now! So color me surprised when i found out that there is a gacha game based on the franchise. A gacha game that is canon to the narrative which covered the seven year time skip and reveals the origins of Shadow Garden, itself. Shut up and take my money!
Tumblr media
The Eminence in Shadow: Master of Garden is a gacha game akin to something like Bleach: Brave Souls. Or, rather, it feels a lot like that. It’s kind of an autoplay scenario. You set your party before each match and just press play. Battles are on kind of an ATB system where your characters act according to a set algorithm. They periodically perform special moves, combos that buff your party, and executed cinematic super moves once a bar fills up. In that respect, it’s not so much a game than it is a form of tower defense. I mean, i have vague memories of Valkyrie Profile and Resonance of Fate playing similar to this but it’s been years since I've touched one of those games so i might just be imagining it. Still, the actual gamely leaves a lot to be desired, because of course it would, it’s a gacha game, bu Master of Garden makes up for that with slick, 3D, animations and pretty solid models. I was surprised by how polished the varying designs of the main characters. More than that, it’s the customization which really gets you.
Tumblr media
The actual gameplay is forgettable to say the least but the prep for those auto-battles? That is where he fun lies. There is some real depth in terms of building your team here and i am here for all of that. First, there is an elemental system in place. Red, blue, green, etc. Red beats green, blue beats red, if you’ve played an RPG,ever, you get it. Each character gets assigned a color so here’s that. They also have certain jobs or classes, Tank and Healer being the most prominent. If you don’t have a tank or healer in your party, you’re gonna f*cking lose. Beyond that, you can level up each pf your characters through battles where you gain experience, or items you collect after battles. You can also equip your characters with generic weapons and armor which is tied to a ranking system that further increases your strength. You can also equip Magic Gear, which further enhancing your strength, each of which, themselves, can be modify and leveled up. It’s pretty deep for what effectively is a money pit, waifu simulator, which brings me to the biggest bummer about his entire game: he gacha.
Tumblr media
Master of Garden has one of the most unforgiving gacha systems i have ever experienced in a mobile game to date. It is rough out here, yo! Obviously, the goal is to roll as many SSR level characters as possible and that seems impossible. I’ve hit these banners several times with the ten times roll and i popped one SSR. One. And it was a f*cking tank. Those cats attack for sh*t. Both of SSRs are tanks, one of which is just a progress reward. But you can get a guaranteed SSR if you pay for it and they make that abundantly clear. They literally have special rolls for paid Gems, only. This is an every day thing. It took Fate/Grand Order, the most predatory f*cking gacha out there, years before they installed something like that. Master of Garden? Day one. Seriously, i can roll a guaranteed SSR for twenty-eight hundred paid Gems, which is basically fifty dollars because the thirty dollar option gives you twenty-four hundred. It’s f*cking insane. And the Pity System is pathetic. You have to collect, like, shards or something until you get enough to buy the character instead of just, you know, giving it to you after so many rolls. In doing so, you need o spend more of your Gems, which leads to a higher chance of you buying more gems, just to pop he Pity. It’s disgusting.
Tumblr media
Overall, i can’t recommend this “game”. It appeals to the Virgo in me with all of the customization but i can’t, in good conscious, tell you to play knowing how unforgiving that gacha is. That sh*t sucks because the narrative during the time skip is pretty f*cking solid. It’s well acted and you get a ton of proper character moments that were missing in the show. I’m sure a Wikia somewhere has compiled all f those beats but experiencing it as it should be, on your [hone or PC, with the detailed graphics and proper voice acting, is an entirely different experience. If you’re a fan, give it a shot, i guess? I mean, i did, but it’ wildly disappointing, especially when you get that progress wall because it’ll come fast. I’ve been playing this thing for three days and I'm already at an impasse, mostly because anything under an S rank is bunk once you progress to the third chapter of the main campaign. Guess where I'm at now? Fun times, that. At least i got a Delta. She’s my favorite and just as adorable in this game as she is in the show.

Monica Chin at The Verge did a piece on this in 2021, “File Not Found”:
Catherine Garland, an astrophysicist, started seeing the problem in 2017. She was teaching an engineering course, and her students were using simulation software to model turbines for jet engines. She’d laid out the assignment clearly, but student after student was calling her over for help. They were all getting the same error message: The program couldn’t find their files.
Garland thought it would be an easy fix. She asked each student where they’d saved their project. Could they be on the desktop? Perhaps in the shared drive? But over and over, she was met with confusion. “What are you talking about?” multiple students inquired. Not only did they not know where their files were saved — they didn’t understand the question.
Gradually, Garland came to the same realization that many of her fellow educators have reached in the past four years: the concept of file folders and directories, essential to previous generations’ understanding of computers, is gibberish to many modern students.
seriously, though. i work in higher education, and part of my job is students sending me transcripts. you'd think the ones who have the least idea how to actually do that would be the older ones, and while sure, they definitely struggle with it, i see it most with the younger students. the teens to early 20s crowd.
very, astonishingly often, they don't know how to work with .pdf documents. i get garbage phone screenshots, sometimes inserted into an excel or word file for who knows what reason, but most often it's just a raw .jpg or other image file.
they definitely either don't know how to use a scanner, don't have access to one, or don't even know where they might go for that (staples and other office supply stores sometimes still have these services, but public libraries always have your back, kids.) so when they have a paper transcript and need to send me a copy electronically, it's just terrible photos at bad angles full of thumbs and text-obscuring shadows.
mind bogglingly frequently, i get cell phone photos of computer screens. they don't know how to take a screenshot on a computer. they don't know the function of the Print Screen button on the keyboard. they don't know how to right click a web page, hit "print", and choose "save as PDF" to produce a full and unbroken capture of the entirety of a webpage.
sometimes they'll just copy the text of a transcript and paste it right into the message of an email. that's if they figure out the difference between the body text portion of the email and the subject line, because quite frankly they often don't.
these are people who in most cases have done at least some college work already, but they have absolutely no clue how to utilize the attachment function in an email, and for some reason they don't consider they could google very quickly for instructions or even videos.
i am not taking a shit on gen z/gen alpha here, i'm really not.
what i am is aghast that they've been so massively failed on so many levels. the education system assumed they were "native" to technology and needed to be taught nothing. their parents assumed the same, or assumed the schools would teach them, or don't know how themselves and are too intimidated to figure it out and teach their kids these skills at home.
they spend hours a day on instagram and tiktok and youtube and etc, so they surely know (this is ridiculous to assume!!!) how to draft a formal email and format the text and what part goes where and what all those damn little symbols means, right? SURELY they're already familiar with every file type under the sun and know how to make use of whatever's salient in a pinch, right???
THEY MUST CERTAINLY know, innately, as one knows how to inhale, how to type in business formatting and formal communication style, how to present themselves in a way that gets them taken seriously by formal institutions, how to appear and be competent in basic/standard digital skills. SURELY. Of course. RIGHT!!!!
it's MADDENING, it's insane, and it's frustrating from the receiving end, but even more frustrating knowing they're stumbling blind out there in the digital spaces of grown-up matters, being dismissed, being considered less intelligent, being talked down to, because every adult and system responsible for them just
ASSUMED they should "just know" or "just figure out" these important things no one ever bothered to teach them, or half the time even introduce the concepts of before asking them to do it, on the spot, with high educational or professional stakes.
kids shouldn't have to supplement their own education like this and get sneered and scoffed at if they don't.
