Hiya!

I love this blog and just wanted to ask- do you know any advice on formatting and tagging for AO3?

Or just general etiquette!!

I'm not new to AO3 (reading or writing) but I haven't interacted with the actual community much and would love to know more :)

oof, I still feel like a newbie posting stuff on ao3, and tagging is something i've always struggled with. and actually formatting is also on ongoing issue 😅 so with that in mind, here's what i try to consider:

TAGGING

relationships -> tagging the main is obvious, but i'm sometimes torn about tagging side relationships that feature in the fic, especially since it's annoying to be searching for that pairing and get a bunch of results where they're not the main focus; unless the other pairing is a prominent feature, i leave it out of the relationship tags and at most add it to the additional tags

characters -> i remember updating the character tags on my early fics every time another character popped up in the story, but now i'm of the same mind as the side pairing issue; unless the character is prominently featured, i leave them out of the tags

content warning/advertising -> if i know the fic features an element that some people might wish to avoid, i always tag it and also always fret that i've forgotten to tag something in that regard. when it's more about advertising what's in the fic, especially sexual content, i sometimes feel silly listing every flavor of physical encounter unless the fic is pwp/smut (in which case i gleefully list all the depravity); i sometimes worry that over-emphasizing the sexual content in the tags is misleading? like of this 100k fic, if 15k is spent fucking, how do i get the tags to reflect that while also tag cw appropriately? is there an established tag for that?

sometimes i see fics with TONS of tags, like an exhausting amount, and sometimes i see fics with very minimal tags... sometimes frustratingly few. i also know some writers add chapter-specific warnings in the author's notes. in the end, so long as you're making it possible for people to find or avoid your fic as needed, then you're good. Here are some good posts that dive into it more!

(i remember when people on tumblr would scold writers for monologuing in the tags on ao3 like we do on here, claiming it was a strain on the system, but i believe that's been debunked?)

FORMATTING

i've noticed some MEGA annoying quirks with copy & pasting over from Google Docs and Word, and I know there are some tricks to get around them, but i tend to just slog through the Rich Text window fixing everything manually 🙃 OKAY I FOUND SOLUTIONS LINKED BELOW.

spacing problem #1 -> pet peeve of mine, but i dislike it when the paragraphs have massive spaces between them (ditto for indented paragraphs). idk why, but it's tiring for my eyes to constantly leap the chasm between paragraphs. so whenever i copy and paste from Word, which for some reason ALWAYS appears with double spacing between line breaks, i go in and manually fix it. SOLUTION

spacing problem #2 -> when copying over from Google Doc, whenever there's a punctuation mark following an italicized word, a random space appears between them. and yep, i have to go in and fix every one because typos make me twitch. (this might not be an issue for everyone; i overuse italics and dashes like it's my job) SOLUTION

spacing problem #3 -> again probably a me issue, but i tend to include song lyrics a lot, and it's always a headache to format because when pasting from the doc, ao3 embeds these spaces between the lines that i can't remove by backspacing. only fix i've found is to copy and paste lyrics directly from a website, and then it formats fine. random and annoying and weird. (no solution 😔)

since this section has just been me whining about finding SOLUTIONS for formatting issues, i'll offer one tip that's more about general editing: i try to proofread best i can in Word/GDocs, but it's always easier to spot errors when i'm reading the draft on my phone. the typos always jump out at me from a phone screen. it's now my favorite way to edit!

every writer has their own preferences on formatting, and every reader has their own level of tolerance for formatting quirks. in the end, so long as the formatting doesn't interfere with the reading experience, you're all good.

Yes!! But not always as sometimes I immediately forget to reply and when I do, it’s a few weeks or a month later skkshdk forgive me

Biting Back in Anger. It’s Eddie having a bad day and blowing up at Steve, who leaves trying not to cry :)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

uhhh most of my fics have happy endings but I think I can nominate The Tinsel Tradition. It has Steve, Eddie, and Robin building a home together in NYC, healed and happy in every queer way!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I’ve been writing more smut recently and exploring some areas. I’m honestly gotten more comfortable though it’s still a challenge to get the right words without coming off as awkward lmao. but that’s Phil’s (@theheadlessphilosopher) job 🫶💜

10. Do you write crossovers?

I’m more of a fusion au writer who borrows the setting and elements and places my blorbos in there than a straight-up crossover. Unless that counts as a crossover? Those two terms are kinds confusing sometimes..

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

There are a couple folks who played around this idea with me but nothing concrete. Though I guess Phil’s beta work can count because he writes better lines and scenarios than me

oof. I have a TLOU steddie wip based on resande’s sketches, but it’s looking unlikely to be done because the person looking it as my beta reader over got busy with other things and I’ve lost the writing juice 😔

Many people tell me that I am very visceral with my descriptions, esp with horror, and setting the tension is top-notch 🥰 (I am a freak who loves gore and blood tehehehehe)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I have too many ideas and a problem to actually write what I want that it comes off as juvenile to me. I also have a tendency to gloss over the editing of my fic which I’m trying to break out of.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I honestly don’t mind it at all. However, I do get taken right out of the story if the language is written literally (like kanji for Japanese, Cyrillic for Russian, etc.) and not romanized when the character is speaking because that’s not how it works

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Warrior Cats. We all started our writing careers from that series at some point in middle school lol

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Noooo, I can’t pick favourites- I love them all equally. But FINE, I’ll say it would be When Life Gives You Pickles, Make It Into Soup. I wrote this as mostly self-indulgent because I LOVE pickle soup and is the best comfort food of all time. I think anyone making soup in general for their significant other if PEAK relationship goals because who doesn’t love soup?? Of course I had to Steddie-ify it

ugh. plotting/outlining, just planning ahead in general. i always start my fics with a random sentence and just take it from there which has cost me some nerves in the past because i never know what i'll end up with

love when people do that. i think it can be a nice way for authors (like me) who aren't native english speakers to sprinkle bits and pieces of their own first language into their fics

Happy birthday darling @nv-md! I can’t think of anyone more present, cheerful or supportive than Ali. She’s always so kind, so positive and genuinely encouraging to everyone around her, and also super enthusiastic about all fandom related things. i don’t think i’m the best person to ask for advice from when it comes to writing on tumblr because i’m not on here frequently anymore 😭😭😭 and most of the time i just post whatever insanity my brain has conjured, which more often than not does fit within the standards of the kind of content that blows up on here (ahem, plotless smut, ahem). HOWEVER!!! if there’s anything specific you’d like to know/learn about fanfic writing and posting, i will try my best to help!!!

in terms of making fics look good n pretty, it’s always advisable to create a header that matches the vibe of the overall fic HAHAHHA the standard header formula on tumblr dot com is idol image + text (but as u can see.....i like to break that formula HAHAHAHAH) and make sure to use the appropriately spacings for ur text!!!

again, if there are any specifics that you'd like to get advice abt, feel free to ask more!! (with regards to reaching many people, i cannot impart any wisdom on that 😭😭 my fics generally do well because the following i've accumulated over the years even though most of the things i write don't pander to the general tumblr audience HAHAHAHAH i don't want to ruin ur creativity either by advising to write something that panders to that audience 😔😔).

Some people leave a bunch of emoji comments on chapters as they go along, and in that case I usually just respond to the last one rather than each one individually.

I'd say this one. Older fandoms hold nostalgia for me, but I've never created as much as I have than for this ship!

I have a gen fic one-shot that involves terminal illness of sorts. I started it during the pandemic, and it will likely never be completed due to the overall depressing nature of the story.

I like to think I'm funny and I have creative ideas.

I'm a pantser. And I always have a dozen gdoc tabs open at a time because I keep starting new ideas.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

In moderation, unless we're actively providing translations. Even so, it can break up the flow of reading if I have to dump entire paragraphs into a translator just to understand what's going on.

In certain fandoms, there may be canonical language elements that are frequently used and thus become colloquial in a way — I used to read/write in the Les Miserables fandom, so there was a lot of French.

Hands down, this is my favorite fantasy read of the year!

I think, however, that the thing I loved most about The Forgotten Goddess is that it dives right into the character meetings and drama. Sure, I love a good world building and character-building story, but this one builds as the story progresses from the very first chapter. I liked that it wasn't a hundred pages of info dump before diving into the action. You get the action from the very beginning!

This book also has a little bit of everything. There's humor, there are feel-good moments, action, magical moments, and angst. Ugh, the angst!

I flipped page after page, not wanting to put the book down. And then when it was finally over, I was an emotional wreck. I have no idea how I'm gonna hold out for book 2 lol.

Hi!!!! I have been dying for Harry to figure it out. I know it took a while but I hope it was kind of worth the wait. It's funny you say that about the MC finding out 👀 It def gives him closure. Please don't apologize! I bet you're exhausted! 3 weeks seems like forever. That's interesting you start toward the end of September. There's NOTHING wrong with living at home and commuting. I have an apartment and I love my bf but I would move back home to my INSANE family in a heartbeat if it meant I could save more money 😅 I was lucky to live on campus because of scholarships and stuff but even still I was only an hour away from home if I needed anything and after my first year I had my car with me.

I have one more full week off but I've been SO busy I feel like I didn't really get a break :( idk. I know people complain about teachers having all this time off but it goes quick and shoving all the things you need to do into it is difficult. I haven't even seen like half of my friends that I wanted to see which I normally budget my time off with. The thought of meeting up with them is exhausting and as I've mentioned before I always do the reaching out so that's exhausting in it's own right. I think I will likely have to book myself into September and hang out with them at that time.

I actually reread parts of Zipper the other day 😭 I think they probably rotate through my top 3 couples and stories. But what's a little sad is I would love to write more about them, but I think they might be done. I feel (hope) I wrote a really solid ending for them and I could write about their kids or whatever but idk if that's worth it. "This is ridiculous. I'm turning the lights on", Hoseok says and before you can stop him, the bedside lamp flickers awake. 

You manage to cover yourself before he can see you, pulling the blanket high up your body. Need to hide. Need to minimise the damage. 

"No! What have you done? Why would you do this?" you are screaming, feeling so ashamed that you can't help but do. 

"Why are you screaming at me?" Hoseok is perplexed to see you like that. 

"You don't respect my wishes at all! I don't want you here! Out!" you are so desperate at this point. Hoseok already saw too much. 

"Baby what is happening? Why are you like this all of a sudden?" 

He reaches out to hold your hand. He doesn't pull it away from the blanket, which you are so desperately clutching to your chest, he just places his hand over yours and caresses your knuckles. 

Why isn't he leaving? Everyone else would have left by now.

The candles paint everything in a dim, warm light. As if you were living inside a nice, cozy fireplace. It is so pretty to look at and it's not too bright as well. When Hoseok breaks the kiss again, your skin is prickling in arousal. Your eyes meet. Hoseok grasps the edge of the blanket, silently asking you if this was okay. You loosen your fingers around the blanket, inhaling shakily. You are ready. 

Hoseok keeps the eye contact up and pulls down the blanket slowly. Your breath hitches, your heart feeling like it might give up in your chest. The blanket leaves your body more and more. 

"Hoseok", you choke out.

Hoseok peels his eyes open slowly, looking at your face first. He smiles and cups your cheek. 

"So beautiful", he whispers and then he lets his eyes flit down.

I don't know if you've been asked about this before, but may I ask how can one just "focus" on their WIP to finish it. I've been making my Our Flag Means Death AU for a month now but I can't help myself to make other fics as well, the ideas are just drowning my brain tbh 😔. Any tips or what to do ?

Oh, wow. That’s quite the dilemma.

Okay, so first off, I have to say I know exactly how you feel — I have prompts and AUs swirling around in my head all. the. time. It’s crazy, and sometimes, it makes me sad when I realize there’s no way I could possibly write all of them in this lifetime, in a way that does each story justice.

I think that’s just how creative minds work — it’s so easy and so tempting to find a new AU in the everyday that it’s just hard to stop. I don’t have a surefire fix for the problem, but I can suggest some things.

1) When you’re writing longer fics, it’s easy to get distracted by AUs because thinking up an idea is usually the most fun part of writing. It happens to me when I hit a wall or an issue in what I’m actually writing, because it’s just more fun to let your mind drift to a story that doesn’t need you to work. But then, you have to remind yourself that each AU is going to have its problems, and while a new story may seem easy at first, there’s always going to be a moment where the writing is a struggle.

2) Not all prompts have “meat” to them. Some of them are just cute ideas that don’t necessarily have a larger story, and you tend to realize that when you sit with the idea for awhile. You’ll find that not every idea can be expanded into a full fic, and some AUs really are just going to be drabbles or meme ideas.

Which leads me to…

3) Write drabbles and ficlets and time stamps. Sometimes, your brain needs a break from the plot of it all. Sometimes, you just need to write a fun little scene where you don’t have to think about too much exposition or backstory. Sometimes, you just wanna write smut with zero build up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ let yourself do that. Bang out a 500 word scene with no pressure and no context in one of the ‘verses you’re interested in, and post it on tumblr or as a snippet series on AO3. Usually, this change of pace will help you both attend to your craving to test drive that new AU, and clear your mind so you can refocus on your bigger fic with refreshed energy.

4) It’s okay to write slowly and table fics for awhile. Something I learned after I started writing was that there are stories that will demand to be written, no matter how many times you try to put them down or how many other smaller things you write in between. It took me three years to complete OLNF. I didn’t look at that document for 7 months, and I still ended up finishing it because the story demanded to be written, however slowly. Sometimes, you can’t put a timeline on creativity, and as hard as it is to accept that, you have to trust your creative timing and your creative process, no matter how frustrating.
