Was the purpose of this entire mini comic series (Especially part 3) because of panel 9?

Like Eda Mode's "NO CAPES!", growing up when I used to play sports in school we were not allowed to wear jewelry while playing.

And in my mind, magical dueling is as much of a sport just like any other individual 1-v-1 muggle sport.

When I first saw that duel between MC and Sebastian in which Prof. Hecat pits the two students against each other, I couldn't help but think that if that was me, out of habit, I would jump off the piste (in fencing terms, that is the fencing strip play area you would duel on and I would like to imagine that's also the magical name of the dueling strip play area since to me dueling is just the magical version of fencing) and immediately take my jewelry off because I have no wishes to become the next horror story of how wearing jewelry during sports caused an injury.

And hence why part 1, 2 and 3 of McStareface was born - all because of panel 9.

That's it.

That's the whole reason.

***That and to give a reason for Iñaki to call Sebastian "Stare-y McStareface" since she doesn't know his name yet. She essentially gave him the Boaty McBoatface type of nickname as a stand in until she learned his real name 😂. I needed to make part one in order to get part 2 and 3 where I wanted to be and for that nickname she picked for him to make sense. 🤣 This was more than 3 months in the making 😂🤣😂

You won't be catching Iñaki getting a dumb injury because of her jewelry, but unfortunately (or fortunately I guess in this case -depending which scenario you're looking at due to my MC coming from NY) most people (muggleborns and half-bloods who know muggle culture and seen American media) will probably see her taking her earrings as a sign she's going to get in a serious fight and she's not someone to not play around with. Especially since she's Latina and when you tell people that you're from New York, everyone automatically think's you're from the city lol. Ahh, stereotypes. I didn't mean to accidentally stumble upon it with Iñaki 😅😂.

(I mean she used to be from NYC before she moved to the 'burbs and turned to a suburban kid, but that's not the point XD)

While Iñaki isn't someone to play around, (she has ancient magic - not that anybody knows about it) she REALLY just doesn't want to get injured wearing jewelry while playing magical sports. Heck getting your earrings caught in either clothing, your comb or hair is painful (speaking from experience), I REALLY don't want to imagine how painful it will be in a sports injury. 😬

So she gives it to Natty to hold since she finds her new friendly classmate trustworthy enough to hold it. And Natty is all too pleased to help her new friend.

After all, Natty wants for her new friend, Iñaki, to destroy sweep Sebastian off his feet seeing how Natty couldn't defeat her number one nemesis in Crossed Wands yet. 🤗

Just a girl who wants to support another girl to destroy her dueling rival -just girly things, you know? 🤗🤭😁

Not that Natty is the only one who wants to see the undefeatable Sebastian Sallow go down.

Even if Iñaki doesn't know anything about his dueling record -heck, she doesn't even know who McStareface is- one thing she does know is that she's SOOOOO looking forward to returning the favor of his smack talk in a duel 🤗😁🤗

After all, it's “Perro que ladra no muerde”/ (A dog that barks doesn't bite) talk to her right now. And after her rough entrance to Hogwarts, Iñaki knows how to bite between the dragon, knights and everything not nice she had to face so far up to this point.

Music low, drinks half-finished, someone’s passed out in the corner with a blanket that definitely smells like weed and regret.

And Ellie? Ellie’s on the floor, back against your knees, launching into the most insane rant you’ve ever heard.

“…I’m just saying,” she says, hand flailing with a cheeto between her fingers, “If birds wanted to be evil, they totally could. Like, they’ve got flight and hollow bones and talons. You ever seen a goose, man? Those things are demonic.”

The room is silent for half a beat.

“Anyway,” she adds, like she’s just delivered a TED Talk, “that’s why I never trust anything with wings and an attitude.”

Jesse blinks slowly. “Dude, what the fuck?”

But you?

You’re grinning. Fingers carding through Ellie’s hair absently, like you love hearing her unhinged theories about avian world domination. You lean down a little and whisper near her ear, “so… if I wore wings, would you be scared of me?”

Ellie’s neck goes red in an instant. “What—no—wait—maybe? I mean, not in a bad way! Like, in a cool, terrifying, kinda hot way—”

“Jesus Christ,” Jesse mutters. “She’s in love.”

“She’s doomed,” Dina adds, sipping from her beer.

But Ellie’s barely listening—because she’s twisted halfway around to look up at you, and you’re still smiling at her, still stroking her hair, still looking at her like she’s the smartest, funniest person alive.

And she’s melting.

“You’re, like…” she breathes, squinting. “Really pretty.”

You blink, caught off guard for half a second.

“…Thanks, babe.”

“No, like. Really. It’s a problem. You’re smiling at me and I forget how words work. And my brain just goes: pretty. smile. girlfriend. And then there’s just static up here.”

She taps her forehead with two fingers, completely serious.

And you just laugh—soft and sweet—and lean down to press a kiss to her temple.

The room erupts.

“OH MY GOD,” Jesse groans, falling back on the couch like he’s been shot. “How the hell did Ellie pull her?”

“I feel like I’m watching a golden retriever date a goddess,” Dina mutters. “It’s disturbing.”

Ellie turns scarlet, burying her face in your thigh. “Don’t listen to them,” she mumbles. “They’re just jealous.”

You smile down at her, hand curling under her chin to tilt her up again.

“I think you’re perfect.”

Ellie malfunctions. Fully. Stares at you with big, round eyes like you just offered to marry her on the spot.

She mouths perfect? like she’s never heard the word before.

And all you do is nod.

Because you mean it.

Ellie’s still staring up at you, stunned, her face half-buried in your thigh. Everyone else has moved on to another round of some dumb card game Jesse’s pitching, but she’s still stock-still.

You called her perfect.

Her. Ellie “accidentally-walked-into-the-wrong-classroom-and-sat-there-for-40-minutes” Williams. Ellie who once used a sock to hold her blunt ‘cause she lost her lighter and burned her thumb last time. Perfect.

“You good, babe?” you murmur, hand gently brushing her cheek.

She blinks. “Yeah. Yeah, no, I’m chill. Totally chill. Just, y’know, experiencing a full emotional reboot. It’s fine.”

You giggle and press another kiss to the top of her head, and she whines softly into your leg like she can’t handle the affection.

Eventually, someone mentions it’s past one, and the room starts to empty out. You tug Ellie up by her hoodie strings, and she stands like she’s been resurrected, slinging her bag over her shoulder and mumbling something about “walking you back.”

Outside, it’s cool and quiet. The kind of early campus stillness where every window glows soft yellow and the street lamps flicker like they’re just as tired as the students.

You lace your fingers through hers, and she tenses for half a second before relaxing—then squeezing back.

She glances sideways at you. “So. Uh. I meant to ask. That thing you said back there—was that, like, real? Or were you just saying it ‘cause I said your smile makes my brain explode?”

You stop walking and tug her back a little, fingers still locked. “You mean the perfect thing?”

Her whole face goes red again. “That’s the one.”

You shrug, playful. “Guess you’ll have to get used to hearing it.”

She stares. “You’re gonna kill me. You’re actually gonna kill me. Death by girlfriend compliment. Local lesbian found deceased on sorority row sidewalk.”

You grin. “You’re ridiculous.”

“I’m in love,” she says immediately, too fast, too much. And then realizes, slapping a hand over her mouth.

“Oh my god, ignore that, that was—that slipped out, I didn’t mean to—well I did, but I didn’t mean to say it, not like that, I was gonna wait ‘til, like, Valentine’s Day or a meteor shower or something cool—”

You stop her with a kiss. Gentle. Quick. Just enough to make her forget what planet she’s on.

When you pull back, she’s blinking, dazed. “…was that a good kiss or a ‘shut up, loser’ kiss?”

You smile. “Both.”

She huffs. “Rude.”

But you’re smiling at her with that look again—the one that says she’s yours, chaos and all—and she leans in close, bumping her forehead to yours.

“I meant it,” she mumbles. “Even if it was an accidental I-love-you. I do.”

You tilt your head, whisper back, “Me too.”

Ellie practically floats the rest of the way to your dorm. You part with another kiss, and she’s halfway down the hall before she turns around, walking backward and beaming.

“You still think I’m perfect?”

You laugh. “I think you’re mine.”

And that’s all it takes. Ellie bolts out of sight before you see the way she pumps her fist in the air, quietly muttering, “holy shit, holy shit, I have the best girlfriend on earth.”

She’s standing in the middle of her room. Hoodie still half-on, phone gripped like it’s both her lifeline and her greatest threat.

Her cat’s staring up at her from the bed, judgmental as hell.

“Don’t look at me like that,” she mutters, flopping onto the mattress. “You didn’t see her. She said I’m hers. I had no choice but to fall apart.”

The cat blinks.

Ellie’s phone buzzes.

[You]: made it back okay? [You]: you looked like you were floating

She groans, punches her pillow a little, and then types back:

[Ellie]: i was not floating [Ellie]: i am very grounded. like a normal person. a grounded, non-floating person who is extremely chill and not thinking about your lips at all.

Immediate regret.

She throws the phone face down on the bed.

The cat meows. “I panicked, okay?”

Buzz.

[You]: you’re so dumb. i’m smiling so hard it hurts [You]: love you, loser. goodnight.

Ellie clutches her phone to her chest and lets out a long, dreamy “fuck.”

Oh u ate!! Yeah the way the characters are treated is kinda .. headcanon heavy nowadays in the fandom. I absolutely understand why some people’s interpretations of the text can become very emotionally charged and personal and maybe even biased, but we can’t really pick and choose what we see. Ted is an unreliable narrator yeah but Ted quoting Ellen saying she doesn’t enjoy the sex isn’t him saying that they assault her, it’s Harlan showing what a gross, twisted situation it is that the sole woman of the group feels that she has to give herself to the others just to comfort them (the way a lot of women are often reduced into sex objects or maternal figures). You can argue that Harlan writing the only female character this way is sexist but it’s also just the reality of how a low of women are viewed. Ted can’t bear the idea that she’s doing it out of genuine good intentions in any way, or maybe that everyone else is suffering as much as he is, so he claims she must enjoy it. He is constantly shifting between putting her on a pedestal, above them, and then seeing her as dirty for servicing them in the first place.

Yes the circumstances are unnatural and abusive and in any other context, Ellen wouldn’t have done it. It’s up to interpretation if it was all her decision or if AM made her a nymphomaniac (I’ve seen people say this but I don’t remember it?), the point is that it is a bad situation, they’ve all been stripped of their agency and a lot of AM’s psychological tortures on Ted can be interpreted as parallels to sexual assault imo. (‘He touched me in every way I had ever been touched’, I really hate how people sexualise that line as if it’s shipping fuel it’s literally mind r*pe.)

Ellen does it because she’s meant to be the ‘kind selfless woman’ of the group. The main message of ihnmaims is kindness in humanity and I feel Ellen and Ted’s dynamic, how he focuses his attention on her and how he decides to mercy kill her at the end instead of freeing himself, is meant to symbolise this the most. He treats her terribly despite her ‘kind’ offers, because he has convinced himself that no one would be so selfless in their situation. Near the start, she takes him twice out of turn as a thank you, or maybe because she thought she was using him, he assumes. He is so messed up guys and the text makes it hard to understand what is really going on.

The men didn’t assault Ellen as far as I’ve interpreted it. It’s terrible circumstances, and at most it’s dubious consent because she is clearly doing it out of a feeling of necessity and wanting to keep the peace rather than actual want. It’s sort of complicated. It’s hard to have a set answer because it’s all from the pov of an unreliable narrator. None of them are exempt from responsibility of course but like,, Ted isn’t just an evil bad person who raped Ellen. It was consensual but grey, AM takes their agency away and doesn’t let them have anything good ofc it’s complex and uncomfortable for all of them

Sorryyy I know this is a super long ask I’m tired and wanted to write down my thoughts. Idk if I maybe repeated stuff u already said . Again; everyone is totally valid in their own interpretations. I love seeing people talk about the characters with nuance and not just reducing them into easy to digest tropes (toxic yaoi tedam ugh). Part of me just wants Ted and Ellen to be friends because their dynamic is so messy and cool to me I just want them to be happy 💔 oka bye

I agree with all of this! The fandom has become very fanon in terms of how the characters are written, or focus more on their game selves, that we often forget who they actually are! Hell, people forget that AM doesn't even have an assigned gender or pronouns; AM was given those things by Ted.

It's a little disappointing. I've come to notice that if the way we write the characters deviates from the fandom's interpretation of them, they get hate or ignored entirely? It's why I never really speak on my own hcs; especially my own ideas for AM. He looks completely different to most AMs, and I fear the backlash.

But on Ted and Ellen: Absolutely what you said. I personally read Ted's hatred towards Ellen stemming from him being jealous and envious of her. In his eyes, she got off "scott free" by being turned hypersexual and placed into a wife/mother role of the group, while him and the other men suffer. There's also personal hc reasons I have on why he's so envious, but to put it short: She got the life he wanted.

Now, obviously he's wrong, and is in the wrong to think like this, but that doesn't mean he always did or that this is his "true nature" or whatever. AM is constantly fueling these delusions and intrusive thoughts. AM is literally forcing this line of thinking onto him. We see him do that. That's canon. To try and take that away is just... incorrect.

I wouldn't say the men didn't assault Ellen. Because they did. But they were forced to. Being forced into raping someone is a thing. And they were. AM forced them all to rape each other because he found sex to be funny and something to mock. That's just the long and short of it.

Though, I do agree: Ellen is shown in the comics to have offered Ted sexual favors in the first place, and Ted constantly contradicts himself on whether or not Ellen does actually want this, so there is dubious consent involved depending on how you read it. That doesn't change the fact that Ellen was still raped, though. It just means she isn't the "perfect victim" that people make her out to be. And neither are the men. But they're all still victims.

Also, people forget: Harlan Ellison was progressive for his time, but he was not a feminist by any means. He had his own biases; his own ideas rooted in misogyny, homophobia, and racism. And he wasn't this amazing, perfect person the fandom holds him up to be.

Literally. The way Ted describes AM invading his mind is so disgusting, and yet people wanna claim they're "toxic yaoi"? Like, it's a kind of funny joke once in awhile in a "wow, wouldn't this be so fucked up if it were true?" way. But back when I first joined, the fandom understood it as just that: A joke. Now to see people actually believe that is insane to me.

It's what I mean by 'the fandom is ableist towards Ted.' I have intrusive thoughts and paranoia that's very similar to his. I know and understand his line of thinking, and how terrifying it is. The fact that people constantly demonize him and consider him malicious because of thoughts he cannot control is ableism, and I fear what they think of real people who also suffer from the things he does.

Lastly, on them being friends: I think it'd be cute if they were, kind of! I love them as foils and I love reading their interactions from a purely platonic standpoint. Though, imo, I think what these two need is to have one really long conversation with each other, and then cut off all contact. That's the best case scenario.

It's saddening. How I view Ellen: She is not as perfect or innocent or nice as Ted makes her out to be. Not because Ted is lying, but because AM *forced her* to be perfect, and innocent, and nice. If they were warped into their worst selves, i wouldn't be surprised if Ellen's worst self was her worst fears: Being put into a wife/motherly role. Being forced into becoming the stereotypes that were rampant during the 1950's. And that sadly includes making her a hypersexual.

Justice for Ellen, justice for Ted, justice for all of them. None of them are truly bad or good people. They are just people, who went through the absolute worst, and I think we all need to be a bit more understanding of that.

• Yeah all in all, pretty great episode! Shipping crumbs were great, especially with Zaivy, Hannah got a moment in the spotlight, and I actually kinda liked how Ted’s elimination was played out despite the fact that I’m still kinda upset over it!

In Clocks’s timeline (like. Loads of years in the future) his friends are STILL ALIVE!!! But they hate Clocks (not Mario who is currently reported missing)

The reason he has a burn on his face is bc well uh, he doesn’t know. Every time he prevents it from happening, it happens in a different way at a different time. He gave up trying to prevent it aaaand he can’t remember how he got it this time so yk. Usually involves boiling water.

He respects Luigi way more and whenever he’s stalking the SMG4 crew he makes sure Luigi isn’t hurt too much (I mean gotta have some fun with the guy)

Still loves his friends tho! Even though they have no idea who he is. He still happily protects them

Still can’t count past 24 (it’s all the hours he needs! Don’t bully him)

ALSO goes to other universes and knows loads of other Mario AUs! Bc why not and he loves meeting them and seeing what they’re like and also loves their reactions when in a serious situation he’s just like metal pipe sfx
