You know my ass isn’t coping well with finals when I suddenly pull out the silliest AU possible /lh
ANYWAYS, presenting ‘Working for E.V.I.L.’, a Sun and Moon show AU I wanna work on when I’m not doing Hive Au centric stuff :3c
Tumblr media
[ID: A digitally drawn sketch of Au versions of Solar Flare, Bloodmoon and Eclipse from the Sun and Moon Show against a white background. To the left of the image, Solar Flare and Bloodmoon stand next to each other. Solar Flare holds up a hand, a star levitating over their palm. They have a circular head that’s surrounded by spiked rays, large triangular shoulder pads, eyes with a black sclera, and a set of air vents in their chest and mouth. They look down at Bloodmoon, an animatronic that wears multiple chains and belts over baggy pants and a ripped shirt. Bloodmoon also has horns, two devil-like tails, and a twin tailed jester hat. He looks towards the viewer with a wide, dangerous smile. In the upper right hand corner, there is a doodle of Eclipse an animatronic with a circular head and large rays that surround his head with smaller, smaller rays in between, he wears a sweater and a necklace with a star attached to it, sitting at a desk in front of an old box computer. Above him is a thought bubble that reads “KC is going to fire us.” Below that is a doodle of Eclipse speaking to Bloodmoon and Solar Flare over a headset, he says “Ive located another star, dont screw this up you two.” The very top of the image says “Working for EVIL.” With ‘evil’ being an acronym. /End ID]

New member of the Evil Sun Squad!
PHOENIX! Named after a BlackHole of the same name!
A version of Sun that merged his Ai with Eclipse to steal the Newton Star after finding out Moon put his Killcode in him
Personality wise they are a mix of both Sun and Eclipses personalities, they can appear as innocent at first, but after getting to know them you’ll find they can be rather sadistic and VERY Sassy, not easy to get along with first try, so try to make a good first impression, their not very forgiving to those who’ve wronged them

Here she (or maybe they???) is, the main character of my MLP AU - Solar Eclipse! It`s a cursed fusion of Luna and Tia, power hungry and dangerous. I don`t want to make my ponies too scary ot too bloody, but I want them to be pretty unnerving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end she is turning into dark void. She emit no light, searching for loyal ponies to serve her.
It always seemed to me that Princess Celestia is much stronger than we are shown in the show. And I decided to raise her strength and desire to possess powerful magic to the maximum, which led to disastrous consequences.

Sorry for so much stuff I may have a slight fixation on this fic (this was written from memory how the fuck did I do that)
Yeah idk I think about this AU all the time heheheh
//JFkdJKFSJkafjLJajfjjafjidfa
Like- Like the fact that people like my fic enough to be talking about it just lksajfsa Also I love "maximum pain is a genre of character" THAT'S APPARENTLY JUST MY GO-TO NOW. We don't half-hand out trauma here, no. We dump it on like the free cheese at Olive Garden
Solar will get his happy ending! He'll get to heal and work through his feelings and emotions! It'll just take time. Same with Lunar. And Poppy will make a comeback, just not in the way people probably expect.//

Hi, sorry to be weird but I just wanted to say that I really LOVE your posts from the portal future blog. I didn't have any ideas for asks to send to that blog but I just wanted to say that it is awesome and I love it and seeing all the different characters you've created/online presences you've created for it.
Hi, thank you so much, I'm really glad that you're enjoying it! I haven't been posting much this past week because a lot of my creative energy is going towards 2 portal future fics i'm working on (one is the new chapter of knight and his sun, the other is an au where jaxon takes a civilian sabbatical after the drago 2781 sequence and develops a whistleblower organization on earth about the welfare of handicapped children)
All that to say though, i've been having lots of fun with the posts from the portal future blog! A couple of the urls are just extras (which may or may not develop into recurring characters in the future), but other than jarra there are 4 characters who i've got semi fleshed out in my mind. If you or anyone else wants to send an ask but doesn't know what to ask about, here's some inspo:
wallamcranesarchnemesis: jarra, but doesn't want anyone to know she's jarra. Tumblr is where she puts all the infodumps that her friends don't want to listen to. Ask her about her opinion on anything in history and she'll be super excited to talk about it. For maximum humour send her an ask about commander tell morrath and watch her fumble and try not to reveal her secret identity
onesmallstep: off-world student currently on earth for his pre-history foundation course! He's curious to get to know more about earth culture and is always willing to answer asks about what planet or sector he's from, what he thinks of earth, etc
nextstephome: a slightly older user who has interacted a few times with junglequeenstalea. They want to become a next step principal which is where their url comes from. Ask them about their "beef" with stalea, or anything about running a next step
talkarchaeologytome: an employee at new york main dig site command! Ask her about the solar 5 rescue or what it's like to work for dig site command
junglequeenstaleeeea: (4 e's in her name, don't get it wrong!) She's my favourite so far and i just feel very protective of her. Ask her about stalea of the jungle (isn't that show banned in next step??? It seems a bit inappropriate for a 14 year old...) or why she hates commander tell morrath so much lmao

Please talk about your CCCC Solar Storms AU (I am daring you)
OUUUHH HOORAY!!! THIS IS WONDERFUL
Okay. So. I'm rather sure that at the VERY least if you live in the United States that you're aware of the recent strong northern lights that, at their greatest thus far, have reached down as far as Alabama. This snapped me back into the realization that OH. OH MY GOD. SOLAR MAXIMIUM IS COMING. Solar Maximum is the peak of the sun's activity in its 11 year cycle, and will be arriving around this time next year, hence the increased sunspotting and solar wind, and by extension, solar storms.
I have been following space weather trends for about a year or so now leading up to this event and I got the kickass idea earlier this week of: "Hey. Hey. Hey. Chonny Jash fan. Hey. Guess who's already the Sun. Guess who [could be] the Earth. Guess who's the Moon." [though that one took me a second to. Realize. like the dumbass I am.]
If the Sun is bombarding the Earth with solar radiation? That's Mind and Soul fighting. This is my big opportunity to write a Mind vs Soul AU AND write all of the atmospheric phenomena and space weather I've been keeping my eyes on AS PLOT POINTS.
look. We've got TWO SOLAR ECLIPSES. We've got the AURORAS. The solar winds, the RADIATION. We have SUNSPOTS. In the local atmospheric phenomena department we have LOADS OF SUNDOGS, a couple instances of GORGEOUS sun halos [i got some of the higher sun arcs on camera last December too, can't wait to play with that], one instance of a MOON HALO— it would be so crazy. It would be so wild.
Currently, plotwise, I have RoE set as the solar eclipse in October, which from my global positioning was not total. After this point, Corona [Mind] takes up a personal vendetta against Aurora {Soul} for Not Doing Enough ["Enough" being synonymous with "killing this mfer"] to punish Selene (Heart) (despite the fact that he already received the punishment of being cast in shadow [eclipses are always on new moons])
I'm working out what it means to be cast in shadow. To obscure another with your shadow. That plays a HUGE role in this whole thing. Eclipses and the lunar cycle. Something with not being allowed to shine. Something with having the beauty of your light snuffed out. Something with being silenced or ignored or usurped or.. something. It's important. It's v important. Expect me to hopefully work it out at some point. I may have to ignore Some conventions of the lunar cycle to make this work but We Cross That Bridge When We Come To It
But anyways !! Corona says ["Aurora you ain't doing Shit, step down or I'll make you."] Aurora basically responds w/ {"You can't do shit. ATMOSPHERE !!"} and Corona says ["FUCKING WATCH ME!! SOLAR WINDS !!"] and then they fight and whenever they fight Corona blasts Aurora w/ solar radiation and Aurora creates shields made of literal auroras to hold off against him and it would make for some Kickass Art
and then there's Selene. Without an atmosphere of his own, tethered to Aurora for safety, he ofc is caught in the crossfire. BUT. because he's the MOON. i thought it would be silly to say that it's up to him to turn the tides of this storyline :3
But. I will say no more. There are things I must obscure for the sake of "interesting reveal later" and "yall better ask me questions about it"
I will drop their designs HOPEFULLY before next week :3

Pokemon AU: Siblings
Livia stood beside Silver the two facing Riddle and Rhyme. "Rockruff!" "Gallade!" "Appletun!" "Roserade!" Rockruff and Gallade popped out side by side in front of Livia and Silver, standing in battle ready positions. Appletun landed with Roserade in front of Rhyme and Riddle, standing ready for the fight. "Ready?"Trey calls. "BEGIN!" Silver nodded to Livia, getting a nod back. "Stone Edge!" "Psychic" Rockruff launched himself forward then started lifting into the air thanks to Gallade, and fired off a storm of rocks from his tail. "Appletun"Rhyme grins pointing forward. Appletun fired an energy ball, an explosion going off in the air when it met stone edge. Roserade charged forward, going straight for Gllade. "Double Team!"Riddle calls lifting his hand. Several Roserade's appeared across the field, running around Gllade staring him down. "Use psybeam!"Silver commands pointing forward. Gallade leaped skyward, charging his attack. "Too late"Riddle smiled. A solar beam fired from the Roserade's knocking Gallade out of the air and straight into Appletun who immediately fired a dragon pulse throwing him away.
Gallade hit the ground and got up, nodding to a concerned Rockruff. Rockruff's tail wagged, smiling at Gallade. Gallade staggered to his feet and shook himself off, giving the little puppy Pokemon another nod, smiling at him. "That's big brother Gallade for you"Livia smiled. "Like us..."Silver nods smiling at her. "Both of you, double team!" Rockruff and Gallade stood side by side, doubles of them appearing across the field surrounding Appletun and Roserade. "NOW DIG!"Livia yells nodding to Rockruff. The Rockruff's leaped up and slammed their paws on the ground vanishing underneath. "Fish it out-"Riddle begins starting to lift his hand. Gallade's appeared around Roserade and Appletun using psybeam, an explosion going off when it made contact with the two Pokemon sending the duo tumbling back. The ground collapsed underneath Roserade and Appletun, both falling to the bottom of the pit. "Hyper voice!"Livia grinned.
A screeching noise came from the holes scattered throughout the pit, Roserase throwing his flowers over Appletun's hears. Riddle threw his hands over Rhyme's ears, Livia smiling slightly seeing the similarities between Riddle and Rhyme and their Pokemon. "Roserade! Sweet scent!"Riddle commands Livia's eyes widening. "Rockruff!"Livia yells knowing Rockruff liked sweet things and couldn't resist going near them. Rockruff and it's doubles head popped out, smiling as they sniffed the sweetening smell. A dragon pulse shot across the wall, destroying each double till it finally hit the distracted Rockruff sending him flying backwards. Gallade threw himself behind the puppy, catching him with ease. Rockruff yipped, his ears drooping. Gallade laid him down behind him, and stepped forward, holding his arms out being Rockruff's shield. "Close combat on Appletun!"Silver commands. Gallade stood still, Rockruff struggling to stand but fell over. "He's not gonna move.."Livia gasped her eyes wide.
"Looks like Gallade refuses to fight.."Riddle comments. "Dragon pulse!" "Solar beam!" Gallade stood firmly as the combined attacks came at him, his eyes narrowed. A small figure threw themselves in front of him. Rockruff shielding him from the blast. "Ga.."Gallade mumbled his eyes looking down at the Rockruff. He kneeled down quickly, nudging Rockruff with wide eyes. "Gallade..."Silver stared knowing how close the two are. Gallade trembled then looked up, his eyes glowing. "GALLADE RETURN!"Silver gasped pulling his great ball out. Gallade ran towards him and knocked the ball away, before launching himself up into the air firing off a fully charged psybeam sending Roserade flying backwards into Appletun. He landed and launched himself forward, using close combat on the duo, his fists flying through the air at maximum speed. "Gallade!"Silver yells starting forward. Livia grabbed him quickly shaking her head, knowing Gallade would attack him in his blind rage.
Gallade punched the two Pokemon backwards, Riddle and Rhyme standing frozen in shock. "Silver! GET YOUR POKEMON UNDER CONTROL!!"Riddle yells looking close to blowing a fuse. "I tried!"Silver calls looking apologetic. Gallade walked towards Roserade and Appletun, firing a small psybeam at Riddle and Rhyme knocking their balls away before they could return the two Pokemon. "Look"Livia mumbles perking up. Rockruff got to his paws, planting them firmly on the ground starting to glow. He leapt forward and rushed across the field, sliding to a stop in front of Gallade. A claw grabbed Gallade's arm as a red and white Lycanroc appeared. Gallade started with wide eyes, his body relaxing. "Ly..ca.."Lycanroc mutters staring him down. Roserade and Appletun stared at the two, getting up quickly and moving back. Lycanroc released Gallade, giving him a small grin. The two turned to their trainers, staring at them both. "The battles not done yet!"Livia smiled.
"Good thing your pokemon stopped Gallade's rampage"Rhyme grinned nodding to her. Lycanroc moved Gallade back and gave him a quick flex before stepping forward. "Two against one..."Silver says surprised. Livia started shuffling from side to side, Lycanroc doing the same as both got into the grove. "DANCE FIGHT!"Livia calls. Lycanroc launched him self forward, doing a series of flips and spins around Appletun and Roserade. "Crap! I forgot Livia's a Pokemon performer!"Rhyme gasped. "Appletun! Dragon pulse!"Rhyme commands. "Roserade, use razor leaf!"Riddle commands. Lycanroc leaped over dragon pulse, spinning side ways midair and landed on one foot, ducking underneath razor leap as he made his way towards the startled Pokemon. "Roserade get close and use poison jab!"Riddle orders. Roserade launched himself forward, eyes widening as Lycanroc danced his way around him. Lycanroc leaped to the left, doing a swift spin as he leapt to the right, grinning at the frustrated Roserade.
He leaped up and kicked Roserade backwards, dodging Appletun as well when it tried to body slam it sending Appletun crashing stomach first to the ground. He launched himself backwards, pushing off Roserade and flipped midair landing in front of Livia. "Rockruff wasn't so good at dancing on four legs, he kept tripping over himself and stumbling everytime we practiced but now he's a master dancer!"Livia grinned. "USE COUNTER!"Livia beamed Lycnroc grinning. "Gallade you as well!"Silver calls. Lycanroc leapt to the left, and grabbed Gallade's hand the two spinning across the field then releasing the other. They spun and punched Appletun and Roserade sending both Pokemon flying past their trainers into the wall behind them. The smoke cleared, Trey staring with wide eyes. "Appletun and Roserade are unable to battle!"Trey announces. "Gallade and Lycanroc win this battle!" Lycanroc grinned and held his claw up to Gallade. Gallade smiled and gripped his claw. "Those two are gonna battle it out more often now"Livia smiled. Silver nodded, watching the two. "They're siblings...like us."

The orbit of Earth around the Sun is always changing. It doesn’t change significantly from year to year, but over time the gravitational tugs of the Moon and other planets cause Earth’s orbit to vary. This migration affects Earth’s climate. For example, the gradual shift of Earth’s orbit and the changing tilt of Earth’s axis leads to the Milankovitch climate cycles. So if you want to understand paleoclimate or the shift of Earth’s climate across geologic time, it helps to know what Earth’s orbit was in the distant past.Fortunately, Newtonian mechanics and the law of gravity work backward in time as well as forward. We can use Newtonian dynamics to predict eclipses and the trajectories of spacecraft to the outer solar system, but we can also use it to turn back the clock and map Earth’s orbit into the deep past. Within limits.Since there is no exact solution for the orbital motion of more than two bodies, we have to run our calculations computationally. A bit of chaos comes into the works, so any uncertainty we have in the current positions and motions of large solar system bodies decreases the accuracy of our retrodiction the further back in time we go. Fortunately with radar ranging and other measurements, our computations are so accurate we can trace Earth’s orbit back 100 million years into the past with some confidence. Or so we thought because a new paper demonstrates we’ve been overlooking the gravitational effect of passing stars. The uncertainty of Earth’s orbit 54 million years ago. Credit: N. Kaib/PSIMost stars are too distant to have any measurable effect on Earth’s orbit. They tug upon our world no more than the distant rocks of the Oort Cloud. But now and then a star will make a close approach. Not close enough to throw our solar system into chaos, but close enough to give the solar planets a gravitational nudge. The most recent close approach was HD 7977. Right now the star is about 250 light-years away, but 2.8 million years ago it passed within 30,000 AU or half a light-year of the Sun. It may have passed as close as 4,000 AU from the Sun. At the larger distance, the gravitational effect of HD 7977 would be negligible, but at the closer end of the range, it would be significant. When you add this into the computational mix, the uncertainties of Earth’s past orbit make it difficult to be confident more than 50 million years. And that has a significant impact on paleoclimate studies. For example, about 56 million years ago Earth entered a period known as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, where global temperatures rose 5 – 8 °C. Orbital models point to the fact that Earth’s orbit was particularly eccentric during that time, which could be the underlying cause. But this new study raises the uncertainty of that conclusion, meaning that other factors such as geologic activity may have played a major role. It’s estimated that a star passes within 10,000 AU of the Sun every 20 million years or so. This means that as we map Earth’s orbital motion deeper into the past, we must also look for effects that may be written in the stars.Reference: Kaib, Nathan A. and Raymond, Sean N. “Passing Stars as an Important Driver of Paleoclimate and the Solar System’s Orbital Evolution.” Astrophysical Journal Letters 962 (2024): L28.The post Passing Stars Changed the Orbits of Planets in the Solar System appeared first on Universe Today.

Announcing Guardian Red Pocket Prompt Fest 2023! 🧧🧧🧧
Tumblr media
Hello Guardian fandom, we’re thrilled to announce the Red Pocket Prompts Fest in celebration of Lunar New Year 2023!
Like red pockets (also called red envelopes or red packets) given out during the new year, weddings, and other special occasions, this fest is a way for us share the wealth in the currency of fandom — fanworks and community!
The event runs from the first day of the Gregorian calendar, through Lunar New Year to the end of the first lunar month (ie. Jan 1, 2023 to Feb 19, 2023).
While the Prompt Fest is centred on the Guardian novel by Priest and the drama adaptation, fanworks in all fandoms generally considered "Guardian-related" are welcome, including RPF, Weilan derivative fandoms (ie. based on other works by Bai Yu or Zhu Yilong) as well as any AUs and crossovers!
Visit the AO3 Collection or click Read More below to find out how to participate!
How do I participate?
You can participate by either submitting or claiming a prompt, or both. You may submit and/or claim as many prompts as you like (though we do ask that you only claim a maximum of three secret prompts) — after all, it's all about sharing the wealth!
Please do note that this event operates like a kinkmeme (or throwing virtual red pockets into a group on WeChat, if you're familiar with how that works). There's no guarantee or expectation that every prompt will be claimed by the end of the event.
What types of fanworks can I submit?
Any! Fic, art, crafts, video, podfic, moodboards…the sky’s the limit! The only requirement is that the work must be posted on AO3. If you are cross-posting or creating a promo post for your work on social media, please use the tag #GuardianRedPockets2023.
Are there any restrictions on pairing, content, rating, or length/quality of work?
There are no restrictions on any of these parameters, as long as the fanwork responds appropriately to the prompt and is properly tagged. Drabbles, sketches and doodles are also very much welcome! The only rule is that fanworks that promote hate or violence against a real world group or individual will not be allowed.
Okay, I'm ready to jump in. But what are these "secret prompts"?
In addition to prompts from all members of fandom which are always visible, the mods have also put together 24 secret/hidden prompts to give you the full red pocket experience — you won't know what's in these "envelopes" until you "open" them! Secret prompts which have been claimed will be revealed every Sunday, starting January 1st — so remember to check back on the prompt you claimed which will have been edited by then.
The 24 secret prompts have been labelled based on the 24 solar terms of the Chinese calendar (as the term implies, each term is based on the movement of the sun), and you can think of these as the "envelopes". Inside each is three prompts vaguely based on the solar term. You may create your work based on any one (or more) of the prompts and you can interpret them as liberally as you like. In order to allow for the greatest flexibility, all prompts avoids nsfw content, specific pairings or characters, and common triggers. We encourage you to be as creative as you want, and most importantly, have fun!
Is there a limit on how many people can claim a single prompt?
Nope! You can even claim a secret prompt after it has been revealed, though of course you won't be getting the surprise of "opening" the envelope.
Are there any rules for what kind of prompts I can submit?
You can submit any prompts you want — for any Guardian-related fandom(s), crossovers and fusions with other non-Guardian fandoms (though these would still be required to relate to a Guardian-related fandom in some way), rating (including M & E), medium, content, etc. It can be as general or as specific as you like, ranging from a single word or theme, to a specific scenario you would like to see.
Like for fills, the only rule is that your prompt should not promote hate or violence towards any real world group or individual.
Is there a deadline for submitting prompts or works?
Sign-ups for submitting prompts will be open from Jan 1, 2023 to Feb 19, 2023. While we encourage you to submit your works during this time as well as part of the Lunar New Year celebrations, the collection will remain open after the event so you may continue to post your works.
I have another question!
No problem, just reach out to one of the mods: Sasa, Ascel or Missy.

SVSSS Monster Hunter AU
Monsters I want Shen Yuan/Qingre to have as familiars!! For how this is going to work, Shen Yuan is going to have a set limit on how many familiars he can take out and about based on the strength of his cultivation and the size/power of the monsters themselves. The reason for this is bc at some point his kinship stone broke which shattered the empathetic bond between him and his familiars, but he can rebuild it with a maximum of 3 monsters at once. He doesn't need the empathy bond on Wu Nian peak bc he has more time to understand what his familiars are trying to communicate, but outside the peak its more necessary for quick communication during battle.
For my own sake there will be three sizes of monsters: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class monsters. 3rd class monsters are monsters that cannot be ridden, 2nd class monsters are monsters that one to three people can ride, and 1st class monster can be ridden by 4+ people.
My understanding of "riding" implies that the monster is not impeded by being ridden. Thus the entirety of the Wingdrakes are 3rd class monsters, and Shen Yuan can have three empathetically tied to him at once, and Paolumu and Tobi-Kadachi are 2nd class monsters so Shen Yuan can have two empathetically tied simultaneously, whereas Najarala or Beotodus are 1st class monsters so Shen Yuan can only have one empathetically tied to him.
Lets get started! first off: Paolumu! Shen Yuan's paolumu is named Mimi [糸糸], the character meaning fine silk repeated twice. Mimi is a 2nd class Flying Wyvern from the Coral Highlands in the New World, and one person can ride her. Mimi is 14m long, is weak to fire and thunder, and resists water.

Stargazing is an accessible activity for families and a perfect excuse to introduce children to astronomy. To begin, parents can teach their kids basic information about the cosmos, such as major constellations, planets, comets and the Moon.
This is a perfect time to explore the night sky. With most businesses and stores closed in cities worldwide, the stars shine brighter, and it’s easier to see them due to reduced light pollution. Here are some ideas to get started as a family:
All you need is a view of the sky and a pair of eyes, although binoculars and affordable telescopes can enhance the experience.
A pair of 7×50 binoculars, the most popular size, is ideal for observing stars. As for family telescopes, the two main types are refractors and reflectors that focus starlight using mirrors. The key features to look for in a telescope are high-quality lenses, a sturdy mount, and a set of three eyepieces that you can use to change the magnification.
Medical breakthrough: New vaccine may prevent Alzheimer's disease

Updated: 11-July-2023
The following table displays the currently visible bright comets as well as the upcoming comets expected to exhibit brightness in the future (with a magnitude above 11.5 and one year in advance). It provides information about each comet’s maximum visibility, brightness level, and the latitude range from which it can be observed during that peak.
Comets that have entered the outward phase (post-perihelion) are excluded from the table once their magnitude drops below 12th magnitude.
Additionally, an icon is provided next to the brightness values (magnitude) to suggest the minimum recommended instrument for observation. However, please note that this indication serves as a general guide and may vary depending on factors such as the comet’s characteristics, observing conditions, and the specific instrument used.
C/2021 T4 (Lemmon)
Comet Lemmon, also known as C/2021 A1 (Lemmon), is a comet that was discovered on January 3, 2021, by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona, United States. It was named after the observatory where it was first observed.
This comet is classified as a long-period comet, indicating that it originates from the Oort Cloud, a distant region of the solar system filled with icy bodies. Comet Lemmon has an elongated orbit that takes it far beyond the orbit of Neptune and brings it closer to the Sun during its perihelion.
The perihelion, which is the point in the comet’s orbit closest to the Sun, occurred on May 9, 2021, at a distance of about 0.73 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. After its perihelion passage, the comet began its journey back into the outer regions of the solar system.
Comet Lemmon has been visible primarily from the southern hemisphere, offering stargazers and astronomers in those regions an opportunity to observe its unique characteristics. It has exhibited a coma, a hazy cloud of gas and dust surrounding its nucleus, which is the solid core of the comet.
The coma is formed as the heat from the Sun causes the icy nucleus to vaporize and release gases and dust into space.
How bright will it be?
Although predictions about a comet’s brightness can be challenging, Comet Lemmon reached its peak magnitude of around 6 in late May 2021, making it visible to the naked eye under dark sky conditions. The comet will gradually fade and become more challenging to observe as it continues its journey away from the Sun.
Comets like Lemmon provide scientists with valuable insights into the composition and evolution of the early solar system. By studying their structure and composition, researchers can gather information about the formation of planets and the delivery of water and organic molecules to Earth.
Observing and studying comets like Lemmon serve as a reminder of the dynamic nature of our solar system and the beauty of celestial objects that grace our night sky.
More about comets
Comets are celestial objects that originate from the distant regions of our solar system. Characterized by glowing heads and elongated tails, comets comprise a core, or nucleus, made up of rock, dust, and frozen gases. When they approach the Sun, their icy cores heat up, causing a glowing envelope of gas and dust, known as a coma, and often a tail, to form.
Classification of Comets
Comets divide into two main categories based on their orbital periods: short-period and long-period comets.
Short-period comets, also known as periodic comets, have orbits that take less than 200 years to complete. They usually trace their paths in the region of the solar system known as the Kuiper Belt. The most famous of these is Halley’s Comet, which reappears approximately every 76 years.
Long-period comets have more elongated orbits, taking more than 200 years to orbit the Sun, with some requiring thousands or even millions of years.
They generally originate from the Oort Cloud, a hypothetical spherical cloud enveloping the solar system at a distance approximately 1,000 to 100,000 astronomical units from the Sun.
Anatomy of a comet
Comets comprise three main parts: the nucleus, the coma, and the tail.
The Nucleus
The nucleus, the solid core of the comet, contains a mix of rock, dust, water ice, and frozen gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and ammonia. Its size can range from a few hundred meters to tens of kilometers in diameter.
The Coma
As a comet nears the Sun, solar heat evaporates the ices in its nucleus, leading to the formation of a large, glowing envelope of gas and dust called the coma. The Sun’s radiation also ionizes the coma, which can result in a type of glow distinct from that caused by reflected sunlight.
The Tail
Cometary tails form as solar radiation and solar wind exert pressure on the coma, blowing gas and dust away from the Sun to form two distinct tails — a dust tail and an ion tail. The dust tail, which reflects sunlight and often appears yellowish, follows a curved trajectory, while the ion tail, which glows due to fluorescence and usually appears bluish, points directly away from the Sun.
Observation and study of comets
Comets have been a subject of fascination for millennia, with records of their observations dating back to ancient civilizations. Astronomers observe comets to study the early solar system, as comets are ancient bodies that preserve the original materials from which the solar system formed.
Modern studies utilize a range of equipment from ground-based telescopes to space missions. Notable space missions to comets include NASA’s Stardust mission, which collected dust samples from Comet Wild 2 and returned them to Earth, and the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission, which deployed the Philae lander onto the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, marking the first successful landing on a comet.
Comets and life on Earth
Comets may have played a crucial role in the emergence of life on Earth. Some theories suggest that comets could have delivered water and organic compounds — the building blocks of life — to the early Earth. The study of comets thus may provide vital clues about the origins and evolution of life.
Conclusion
Comets, these intriguing celestial travelers, have captivated human interest throughout history. They provide a crucial link to understanding the early solar system and potentially the origin of life on Earth.
As our technological abilities evolve, the continued exploration and study of comets promise to reveal even more about these remarkable objects and their place in our cosmic neighborhood.
