this is just my little version of The Well of All Sparks and it's production of new sparks.

I will be delving more into a bit as well as the lakes/rivers enviornment.

it also goes into a little more detail about each stage :>

a Node commonly contains between 5-12 polyp clusters.

each cluster can contain 1-8 polyp sparks.

the Nodes slowly climb up the walls + veins of the Well (and hotspots) as the Nodes develop.

Nodes membranes get thinner the farther they develop and clime up; the membrane brakes when polyp sparks separate from their polyp clusters and finalize development.

lakes + rivers (cracks) are also classified as hotspots.

hotspot developing sparks/Nodes tend to be more exposed to outside factors and "marine" wildlife than the Well and contained hotspots.

the 0.1% (the green sparks) emerge as a stage 5 development in the 2nd sector level of the Well (or hotspots); while normal sparks will emerge as stage 5 out of the 1st sector.

Nodes and developing sparks can be removed artificially (as early as a 3rd sector in a stage 1), but they'll tend to be more at risk of becoming unstable.

mature-ready sparks can stay in the Well/hotspots for up to 5 months (the cybertronian equivalent) inside before it's forced to exit and start gathering any available metals to stabilize and further develop, or it'll get re-absorbed or eaten.

stage 1: sparks are classified as planula at this stage as they just start development within Nodes. they'll divide into small segments before entering stage 2.

stage 2: polyps (sparks) further develop and grow inside the Node and the segments then form a polyp cluster; this is where 0.1% sparks have a chance at being identified.

stage 3: developing polyp clusters continue to develop and grow, their inner-energy now starting to develop and the individual spark-polyps become livelier and start separating from the cluster (soon to be identified as sparks instead of polyps). combiner class sparks however will separate at stage 4 because their connection an important stage of development.

stage 4: spark polyps are now classified as pre-mature sparks since they are (usually) fully separated from the clusters and all have successfully emerged from the Node (the Node membrane being very thin; it'll get reabsorbed).

stage 5: the now mature sparks have fully developed their inner-energy, the outside becoming a protective "skin" around it. they are also ready to emerge from the Well/hotspots and either naturally develop a protoform or be put into a pre-made body. they will be seen either bobbing at the top of the Well or slowly floating around in the 1st sector.

It's sometimes hard to remember that they're your OCs and not a project for a dramatic film or book! All the trivia and world building is so wonderful to read! I hope it's nice to have so much attention on Machete and Vasco, they're lovely and deserve it. :)

I wanted to ask, are there any other OCs you're particularly attached to from your roster that you'd perhaps like for the world to see? Maybe there's someone that you wish had gotten just as much attention?

I have a lot of OCs, but I've been pretty laser focused on Machete, Vasco and their setting for a couple of years now. I feel like that's the creative pursuit that is bringing me the most joy and fueling my inspiration right now. But I don't want to view my other characters as abandoned either, I'll go back to working on them once the right mood strikes.

y'know... for a setting that places so much importance in Language and does so many ice cool things playing with it (Correspondence/Discordance, Parabola & Irem, etc) i think there's a bit of a missed opportunity when it comes to the terms and words people use in their day to day life... like for example:

do you think radical revolutionaries would avoid words like "enlightening" in their vocabulary and flip them for LON-appropriate counterparts to signal their beliefs?

like substituting the word "light" with "blight". lol

similarly, pet names relating to light like "sunshine" kinda have a whole extra flavour tied to them, leaning into nostalgia, melancholy and/or danger depending on the people using it. irony, even

"honey" as a pet name also has extra connotations now and might actually bother some people instead due to the association with the drug...

do you think SMEN, taboo as it is, and seeking being a recognizable phenomenon even to the common londoner, would spawn swear words and insults? (imagine the weight of telling someone to Go Seek or Fall Down a Well)

the word "well" itself. well as an adverb, interjection, adjective. just. think about it. think about what it represents. idk something is happening to this word for sure

I love how a well-written romance is so often structured as a mystery. A person starts with a certain idea about another person, and over the course of the story, they uncover more evidence that gives them a fuller picture of who the other person truly is. They learn about layers to the personality and backstory that give the other person more depth. They learn how the other person's personality meshes with theirs. Even the third-act misunderstanding fits the mystery structure--it looks like they've uncovered the final secret to the other person's identity, which is that they're not the worthy person they seemed to be, but then discover that they misinterpreted that evidence, or the other person takes steps to apologize and repair the level of trust. When the mystery is resolved, they've reached a full understanding of each other and know they've found a partner they can trust their whole future to.

i js think like. when lukey said to pangi ‘never put me through that again!’ it can sound a bit careless. to anyone who doesn't know them enough, it sounds like lukey is being careless with his words to someone who just recovered from the corruption and all it's issues it came with. but in actuality it's anything but. the fact that lukey said it not to anyone, but to pangi, already says it was not careless at all.

because lukey put himself through the horrors, desperately seeking for a forgotten past where the cure may or may not be, the only path forward foggy and uncertain. he put up with so much grief, so much frustration as he watched pangi resign day after day, and then consequently lose his self along with his memories, because memories make you, you. right?

sleep deprived nights holed up in a lab, working tirelessly for a cure with no precedents. with no other available test subject other than pangi himself. night after night, working next to a tube where pangi is submerged in, a constant reminder that time is running out. day after day where he simultaneously recognizes and doesn't recognize the pangi in front of him. because it's him, but this pangi is distrusting. this pangi sometimes looks at him with a conflicted urge to kill and a pipe bomb in his hand. he stops taking off his helmet, because this pangi doesn't know lukey and his tendency to go around and die in stupid ways. hasn't experienced accidentally killing lukey with a dumb miscalculation.

so when pangi remembers, lukey lets it all out. the pent up frustration, and he doesn't have to hold on to that baggage alone anymore. pangi is back, the person he can always rely on is back. so lukey lays it all out: his grief and his relief, his frustrations that were mixed with affection and worry, and so much love. pangi is lukey’s safe haven, someone he can trust his life with. naturally so, he can entrust his grievances with pangi as well.

that's why little moments and details like this are so much more sincere than a ceremony done for the bit. marriage is just a formality when they are devoted to each other, and they both know in their hearts that they will stay in the highs, and the lowest of lows. because these feelings are true and purely them. unbound by labels, this blurs the line and allows pangi to be honest with his feelings. gives him an out, lets him hide under the guise of friendship when questioned. and that is lukey’s intention as well, i think. he knows that when presented with labels and confrontation of the nature of his feelings, pangi will run away. so he allows this to exist in between, somewhere or nowhere. it doesn't really matter because their devotion starts, and ends with them. regardless of where they are. the vows were already exchanged a long time ago. in silence and in actions, never really spoken out loud, but they both have commited to them.

for better or for worse,

for richer or poorer,

in sickness and in health,

to love and cherish.

they are all of these things, and they have committed to each other and upheld these vows even without a wedding.

So, I finally reached chapter 12 (currently in c.16) where Peeta and the others are rescued, and I can't stop thinking about @ngjasper theory.

"They didn’t fully understand what had happened to Effie—not in terms of her location, but her condition. Unlike Peeta, with the tracker jacker venom, or Johanna, white the drowning and electrocution torture. It’s possible that they did manage to rescue her, but she was in such a fragile mental or physical state—perhaps even close to death—that Haymitch and Plutarch chose to remain vague about her situation. Their silence could have been a way to protect Effie's dignity and/or shield Katniss from even more emotional pain."

Ngjasper take this quote to explain this theory: "We’ve no idea what happened to Effie Trinket."

But I would like to add a few more to support this theory because I'm totally taking this theory as (head)canon:

“We got them all out. Except Enobaria." -Boggs, c.12.

They knew Effie was a hostage because "Plutarch and Haymitch had a hard time keeping her alive" so Boggs wouldn't say they got everyone if Effie wasn't with the rest. Besides the nuance and contradictions of what people say through Katniss pov is kind of weird, why would Plutarch say they don't know where Effie is if they had assets that were helping to at least stop some high rank or Snow himself to order her execution, so he saying "we don't know what happened to Effie" wasn't in regards of her location but rather her state.

"My mother, who’s been assisting in a complicated surgery, has still not been informed of Peeta’s assault." -Katniss, c.13.

This quote also gives me something to think, yes, I know D13 is a big city, so medical complications are common in, well, a hospital, but if we get the context of D13 recieving the hostages and the hospital turning chaotic because of their arrival. And taken the fact that as far as we know Johanna, nor Annie or Peeta had to go through surgery when they get them back, well, I think I it could be Effie.

So Effie returned witht the others, but she was in such a bad state Plutarch and Haymitch didn't say a word to Katniss to keep her from more pain.

The first hidden complex was about a day's hike from Sparks. Mechi and Kwahu left Ivy in the capable hands of her new robot uncle and popped out for a bit to take Othello for walkies and do some hacking.

Helpful reminder that Alistair is adorable and eeeverything is fine...

On the bright side, we've never had so many neatly cut bricks before, so that will be nice for any future grand construction projects. Not so nice for Ivy's boredom, though.

Ivy would have a blast playing pretend "robot controller" (she can't say the word 'mechanitor' yet) in Mechi's old airwire headset and duster. She might even want to copy their diligent void-study by mucking around near that big 'ol twisted obelisk outside the gate!

... Huh.

At least Ivy has a mood bonus for "transhumanist modded" now?

As a grad student in a Library and Information Science program, I keep thinking about how records are stored and preserved in Middle Earth. I’m definitely going to do a sequel post to this, but for now here’s my headcanon:

The concepts of record storage and archiving are connected to Vairë the Weaver, the Vala who weaves the story of the world in her tapestries. Obviously she needs a place to keep all her tapestries (which is the Halls of Mandos), but she also influenced the creation of archives in Aman when the elves first came and wanted to preserve their own history. Aulë was also involved somehow, because I feel like he’d be all in on the idea of a preservation system that builds on itself as time goes on. The system created in Aman trickled over to Middle Earth once the Noldor arrived, particularly after Fingolfin got there, and tended to clash with the records management system Doriath used. It’s an ongoing debate even into the Fourth Age which system is better.

When we say characters are narrative tools that just means that any statement like "we need to hold [fictional character] accountable" or critiquing a fictional relationship solely on the basis of whether it is healthy is worthless. It doesn't mean that you can excuse bad writing/storytelling by saying WELL THEY'RE NARRATIVE TOOLS. Characters don't need to be good people to be compelling nor sympathetic! But also, sometimes there's a villain who does just fucking suck (for example) and isn't interesting and only exists to push the narrative from point A to point B and that's valid to criticize. Characters aren't real people and shouldn't be judged as such; but they should feel real and vibrant and their actions should feel organic to the story and hold weight. If they actually just feel like a tool of the narrative then that's bad storytelling; the purpose of a story is to dress up these tools in something compelling.
