I still stand behind my statement that listicles aren’t the end of the world. In fact, I still like that they provide a structure to new writers and weary readers. It’s still helpful to lean into the familiarity and simplicity of a list. This simplicity and structure are something I wish to preserve. What I let go of were the imperatives. I’m not someone who says "you must get 8 hours if you want to be productive", because even something so clean and clear as a single number is only an average. Being 166 cm is an average height, yet people will be taller or shorter and need differently sized pants. Human nature exists with averages that explain most but leave out the narratives on either side. I’m the kind of writer who might suggest the average and then shares the standard deviation. "The average" is to lean into the structured, simplified call-to-action that works for many because our brains still like simplicity rather than messy goop. "The standard deviation" may be to immediately follow up with the caveat to tailor advice based on your own needs and variation from what’s deemed the norm.

"Standard Deviation" now in pre-production!

We at NineColors are pleased to announce that "Standard Deviation" (Desviación Típica), a short film written by our co-founder Caru Basakatua, is now in pre-production.

"Standard Deviation" is the story of River—young, punk, and non-binary—in their first appointment at the "Gender Disorders Unit". There, a psychiatrist subjects River to a test that will decide if they can access the care they need. River knows exactly how they have to answer, but an overlooked detail could jeopardize everything.

"Standard Deviation" will be an episode of the fourth season of Indetectables, an award-winning series of short films addressing LGTBQ+ topics such as STIDs, stigma, mental health, diversity, drugs and more. Indetectables is created by Apoyo Positivo, a Spanish NGO that promotes diversity and works to create a better society through projects that improve health, education, and human rights.

Also, we are thrilled to announce that the short film will be directed by Paco Ruiz. His debut short "Three Times", has won numerous awards and has been selected by film festivals around the world. We can't think of a better choice to bring "Standard Deviation" to the screen.

And the amazing people at Elamedia Estudios are joining the project, bringing their expertise and talent in pre- and post-production.

We are excited to have such an experienced and dedicated team working to bring the story of "Standard Deviation" to life. Stay tuned for more updates on this project, including a casting call for the role of River.

En NineColors estamos encantades de anunciar que "Desviación Típica", cortometraje escrito por nuestre co-fundadore Caru Basakatua, ya se encuentra en preproducción.

"Desviación Típica" narra la historia de River, joven, punk y no binarie, durante su primera cita en la “Unidad de Trastornos de la Identidad de Género”. Allí, un psiquiatra somete a River al cuestionario que decidirá si puede o no acceder a la atención que necesita. River sabe perfectamente lo que debe contestar, pero un pequeño detalle lo pondrá todo en peligro.

"Desviación Típica" será un episodio de la cuarta temporada de Indetectables, la premiada serie de cortos que aborda temas como las ETSs, el estigma, la salud mental, el colectivo LGBTQ+, las drogas... Indetectables es un proyecto de Apoyo Positivo, ONG que promociona la diversidad, la educación sexual y afectiva y el desarrollo personal como motores de cambio social.

Además, nos hace increiblemente felices anunciar que el corto será dirigido por Paco Ruiz. Su debut como director con el cortometraje "Tres veces", ha ganado numerosos premios y ha sido seleccionado por festivales de cine de todo el mundo. No se nos ocurre una mejor elección para llevar "Desviación Típica" a la pantalla.
