My favorite Black couples in Period Films/Series.

An anon recently asked me about my favorite Black couples in period films/series. I have a few! Some of which come along with trigger warnings and a bit of a heads up on not so happy endings. Some of these couples have happy endings, some have endings that leave you wondering, and some have beautiful relationships that ended tragically.

Well, Sense and Sensibility won my poll a handful of weeks ago, but as I only got around to finishing Song Of Achilles last week, I only began reading S&S today….

Unfortunately, as much as I want to enjoy it, as thoroughly as I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice, reading just the first few chapters earlier gave me a headache. It’s much too wordy for my little ADHD Zoomer brain to fully digest and comprehend right now, and as I want to fully enjoy the books I read, I have decided to put it back on the shelf for now, and revisit it at a later date, when I feel more up to the challenge of understanding the older language used.

Now, I could just choose the next highest book voted for in the poll, but where’s the fun in that? Instead I have shrunk the contestant size, chosen the top 5 books I am most considering, and only leaving the poll active for only 24 hours!

To make things more fair and to allow anyone who might not know my choices well to vote too, I will include a very quick summary of the blurbs on the back for context!

FEED: Main character, Titus, and his friends live on the Moon in a futuristic environment. They are used to a constant stream of online activity sent directly into their brains, called their ‘feed’, until a hacker causes them to malfunction and they are left with nothing but their own thoughts for what is presumably the first time ever.

Like A Love Story: Setting is 1989, New York City. Main character is a teenage boy named Reza. Reza is a gay, closeted, Iranian immigrant who is afraid for people to find out he’s gay as all he knows about the ‘lifestyle’ are the media’s images of men dying from AIDS. A girl he dates, Judy, has an uncle with AIDS who devotes his time to activism with ACT UP. Judy is also best friends with the only out-and-proud guy at their school, Art, who is rebelling against his conservative family by photographing and documenting the AIDS crisis.

Fairy Tale: Main character Charlie is seventeen and meets an old recluse, Mr.Bowditch, who he starts doing jobs for. When the old man dies, he leaves a cassette tape for Charlie, telling the story of the secret he’s been keeping all his life; he has a portal to another world in his shed, and Charlie just inherited it.

Companion Piece: A woman receives an unexpected call from a former classmate/college friend asking for help deciphering a puzzling interaction. Everything is somehow linked to the life of a young blacksmith hounded from her trade and branded a vagrant nearly 500 years ago.

1984: Set in Oceania, a society is being tyrannized. In the furtherance of eradicating all expressions of individuality, people’s lives are constantly monitored via telescreens, helicopter patrols, window-spying and the Thought Police. Main Character Winston Smith sits in the one corner of his apartment that is hidden to write a diary, despite the threat of severe punishment.

SAINT ARTEMON, BISHOP OF SELEUCIA (1st c.)

Saint Artemon, Bishop of Seleucia, was born and lived in Seleucia of Pisidia (Asia Minor). He was pious and virtuous, therefore when the holy Apostle Paul (June 29) came to Seleucia, he established Saint Artemon as the first bishop of this city, since he was the most worthy. Saint Artemon wisely nourished the flock entrusted to him and won glory as a comforter of the poor and oppressed. Saint Artemon died in great old age.

[In the ancient Slavonic Lives of the Saints “Seleucian” was written as “Seleoukinian” or “Seleunian.” However, in several of the Greek memorials the bishop was also called Solunian (i.e., of Thessalonica). Saint Artemon (or Menignus) was listed in the MENAIA as Seleucian or Solunian. In the second half of the eighteenth century, these two names were mistakenly applied to various persons.]

THE HOLY MARTYRS PETER and STEPHEN OF KAZAN (1552)

St Stephan of Kazan

The Holy Martyrs Peter and Stephan of Kazan were muslim Tatars who became Christians, in 1552, during the times when Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) conducted a siege on Kazan. Both were martyred in Kazan when Russian forces temporarily withdrew from the city in 1555 before its final conquest. The martyred saints are remembered on March 24. The circumstances behind the conversion and baptism of Peter are not known. Stephan, who was an elderly Tatar, met a priest from Moscow, Fr. Timothy. The elder explained that after the arrival of Ivan’s forces he had learned of the Christian God and came to believe in his greatness. He noted to Fr. Timothy that he had suffered with soreness in his legs for thirty years and promised that if the Christian God healed his legs he would be baptized. He further noted that after he came to believe in the Christian God that his legs began to recover. To fulfill his promise the elder asked Fr. Timothy to baptize him.

Fr. Timothy commented to the elder that his compatriots would try to pursued him to reject his Christian faith, to which he replied that they would not be successful. To illustrate, the elder pulled a shred from his beard and rendered it to shreds, stating that even though they will tear me apart, as how I have torn to shreds my hair - I’ll not abdicate God. The elder was then baptized with the name Stephan.

St Peter of Kazan

After their baptism, Peter and Stephan remained in the city when Russian forces withdrew from the city with the viceroy, Khan Shich-Ali, following them to Sviyazhsk. An armed insurrection occurred in which many Russians who resided in the city were murdered. Standing firm in his faith, Stephan was killed, his body mutilated, and his house was looted.

Peter was kept by his relatives, father and mother, brothers and sisters, distant relatives, and friends who tried to force him to renounce his Christian faith. Calling him by his muslim name, Peter reacted, answering that in Holy Baptism I took the name Peter, so this is my name, not that you called me. Firm in his faith, his family gave him over to torture. Although the torture lasting several days, Peter did not stop repeating the words - I am a Christian. After his repose, Peter was buried in Kazan.

Local veneration of Peter and Stephan as saints began shortly after Kazan was finally taken by the Russians. They are remembered on the same date although they were not acquainted with each other. Their feat of love in Christ united them for eternity.

Trump Campaign Threatens Legal Action Over Sebastian Stan’s ‘The Apprentice’ Movie: ‘This Garbage Is Pure Fiction’

Former President Donald Trump‘s campaign is hitting back following the premiere of the controversial film “The Apprentice,” which chronicles the 2024 presidential candidate’s early years as a real estate developer.

"We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers,” the Trump campaign’s chief spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement to Variety. “This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked. As with the illegal Biden Trials, this is election interference by Hollywood elites, who know that President Trump will retake the White House and beat their candidate of choice because nothing they have done has worked.”

Cheung’s statement continues, “This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire.”

A potential suit from the Trump camp wouldn’t be the first legal hit at “The Apprentice.” Dan Snyder, the billionaire former owner of the Washington Commanders who is an investor in “The Apprentice,” also objected to the film’s portrayal of the 45th president, Variety’s Tatiana Siegel reported on Monday.

Sources say Snyder, a friend of Trump’s who donated $1.1. million to his inaugural committee and Trump Victory in 2016 and $100,000 to his 2020 presidential campaign, put money into the film via Kinematics because he was under the impression that it was a flattering portrayal of the 45th president.

After screening the film in February, Kinematics’ lawyers were enlisted to fight the release of the project.

Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) stars as Trump, while Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) plays lawyer and fixer Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova (“Borat 2”) portrays Trump’s first wife Ivana Trump.

The film, which earned an eight-minute standing ovation following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday, features a slew of unflattering scenes depicting Trump popping amphetamine pills, getting liposuction, having surgery to remove his bald spot, and, most controversially, a scene in which he violently throws his then-wife Ivana to the ground and proceeds to have nonconsensual sex with her.

The film is directed by “Holy Spider” filmmaker Ali Abbasi, and written by journalist Gabriel Sherman.

In his review of the picture, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the central performances by Stan and Strong but argued that the film doesn’t quite stick the landing after a strong start. “For its first half, ‘The Apprentice’ is kind of a knockout: the inside look at how Trump evolved that so many of us have imagined for so long, and seeing it play out is both convincing and riveting,” he writes.

“The Trump we see goes through a looking glass of treachery, leveraging his empire — and what’s left of his emotions — to within an inch of his life. And once that happens, we’re simply watching a well-acted TV-movie made up of familiar anecdotes built around the Trump we already know. At that point, ‘The Apprentice,’ good as much of it is, becomes far less interesting. The mystery the movie never solves is what Trump was thinking, deep down, when he chose to become Donald Trump,” Gleiberman concludes.

Audiophonic 5 by Christian Weber 2001 Techno / Electro

Finally! A techno mix from 2001 with a good amount of absolute bangers on it, folks! I was really in a little bit of a rut over the past week or so with this early 2000s techno mix foray that I've been on recently, but this one here managed to pull me right out of it 🤘. And I really don't know who Christian Weber is—seems like the vast majority of his career just consists of these Audiophonic mixes for Berlin-based label Fine Audio Recordings—but he picked some fantastic tunes for this CD nonetheless.

Here's the big disclaimer, though: if you want something that's mixed well, you need to avoid this thing at all costs, because the transitions on this really are just absolute, bottom-of-the-barrel, gutter-ass. However, if lack of mixing skills isn't a dealbreaker and you just want a sampling of some fire techno tunes from 2000 and 2001, this pretty broad selection of tracks will definitely have you covered.

Undoubtedly, the two best tunes on here come back-to-back, when in the somewhat early going Weber unleashes a pair of remixes from the inimitable Swedish techno wizard, Adam Beyer. Here we get Beyer's take on duo Air Frog's (Jesper Dahlbäck and Stephan Grieder) "Bon Voyage," which implements the original version's irresistibly wicked and fuzzy sub-bassline; and immediately after that we're treated to another total ground-shaker with Beyer's remix of Ben Sims' "Manipulated," which sees Beyer on that nuttily thooming-and-booming, super percussive tribal shit, as a bevy of clamorous drums and dinging hi-hats play alongside vocal samples of Cuban singer Albita's "Ta Bueno Ya." Really incredible stuff.

And another excellent tune on here is German native Richard Bartz' techno remix of Italo-disco trio 'Lectric Workers' 1982 song, "Robot Is Systematic." With this one, Bartz adds a techno backbeat and plonky synths to accompany the original version's classic, sci-fi futuristic lead string melody. An awesome modern update for a sweet and much older dance tune.

So, like I said, if you're looking for someone who can throw down a stellar DJ mix, Christian Weber's Audiophonic 5 is not for you, but if you treat this thing more like an early 2000s techno playlist of sorts, I guarantee you're gonna really dig a bunch of these selections here 🙌.
