#TALK ZADR TO ME

I am endlessly plagued by totally normal and appropriate feelings re: Zim and Dib saying each other's name's like that (if you get me, you get me), but I'm too lazy to make a compilation so I did the next best thing and wrote this piece of highly questionable literature about it instead

It's when Zim drops the suffix that Dib knows for sure things are about to get serious.

Most times, Zim spits out Dib’s name like it’s an insult, the tone indistinguishable from the one he uses when cycling through his roster of a schmillion and one derogatory titles, all of which smear together but might as well be a single moniker for the uniform way in which they’re spoken. Really, it’s not much different from the way most people tend to address Dib, as if the burden of tolerating his presence is an unpleasant but inevitable chore—just a bit more vehement and with the addition of arbitrary modifiers Dib’s long since learned to tune out. Sometimes it’s as if Dib has ceased to be a name at all and is instead a definition, the scientific classification for a new species of grotesque freak.

But every now and then—just often enough to keep Dib perpetually suspended in a state somewhere between eager and on-edge—the energy shifts, his last and most dire signal that a very dangerous game has already begun. There’s just as much contempt and an even nastier mocking edge, but there’s no mistaking it for another petty jab. It’s a knife shoved right in his middle, cold metal chill and the sharp numbing spark of a body going into shock, precise enough to leave his psyche spitting up rivers of rage or fear or both, but even as he’s shuddering around the lethal wound, there’s something in him that can see the care with which the blade has been sharpened.

More often than not, Dib only gets to be stabbed through the fuzz of a transmission as Zim describes his doom to him from wherever he’s judged a safe distance, the edges dulled by that slight alteration in quality that not even the best in Irken tech can entirely eliminate. That’s all well and good and gruesome enough, but it’s the occasions on which Zim’s enacted his plans in person that really stand out in Dib’s memory. Felt from beneath the full weight of every decibel, Zim’s voice almost sounds less sing-song than serenading, some single-minded ritual of seduction. A taunt, yes, but also a reassurance—that he really is every inch the monster Dib needs him to be, and that just for this moment, Dib is the sole locus of his attention. A creature of the cosmos, witness to incomprehensible wonders, stirred by Dib more than anything else, and under such exceptional circumstances, could anyone really claim he’s crazy just for being a little bit obsessed?

Zim's name sounds good in Dib's mouth.

Granted, Zim’s name sounds good in anyone’s mouth; there are some things simply too perfect to be butchered. With Dib, though, there’s a difference Zim can’t put his finger on. Of course, Irken names never roll off quite right from the humans’ flat, flappy tongues—too many hard consonants and clipped syllables for them to manage. Tak’s always sounds like the slam of a door, and poor Skoodge got stuck being addressed as something seen smeared on the sidewalk, stretched and squished at the same time. Even Zim’s name, unbutcherable as it might be, sounds slippery in their mouths, or else too quick, too sharp. Not with Dib, though—coming from him it’s slow and sibilant, a sort of sliding hiss, and that isn’t right either but for some reason Zim likes the sound of it, maybe even more than he does the real thing.

Things aren’t always so theatrical, of course. Far too often, Dib just shrugs the word off with all the dismissiveness due an old raincoat or coats it in enough casual contempt to make the internal cooling systems in Zim’s PAK falter by a couple dangerous degrees. No, if Zim wants the reverence he’s owed, he has to earn it, and that’s perfectly fine—it’s not as if the Dib has ever proven particularly difficult to entice. A mysterious occurrence, the suggestion of a scheme, any lure to lead him in by his overactive sense of curiosity and he’d be there, crying out for Zim’s attention as if his arrival hadn’t been half the goal in the first place. Sometimes he shows up already stumbling-sick with anger, at others sounding so ecstatic it might even be mistaken for sign of fondness, but in every case there is the one critical constant; that his presence itself is a papered-over proclamation of the most all-encompassing, unashamed want.

Not that Zim has ever been unwanted—the very notion, absurd!—but within the most walled-off corners of his mind, he’s willing to allow that maybe, just possibly, there’s a chance he’s never been wanted quite like this. Like a prayer or a pipe dream, the promise of settled scores and spiteful satisfaction, as if Zim’s somehow both the solution and the cause to all of Dib’s problems at once. The grating celebration always comes so premature, as if just seeing Zim, speaking to him, is by itself a form of vindication, and Zim’s never been the least bit pleased to let Dib have it. He knows it’s not much like an Invader to be running from something he could so easily fight, not much like an Irken, but the inevitable dogged pursuit that follows is proof of Dib’s dedication desperation, and what possible shame could there be in indulging that? After all, no consequence of getting caught is scarier than losing all cause for a chase.

Maybe I'm misremembering (several disorders that cause memory issues will do that to you) but didn't you. Make a post that addressed the things everyone on Twitter is upset about now? Like, *you* brought this stuff up, talked about it openly, but they're treating it like it was this shocking, big secret. Did I miss something? Or is it really as simple as people (as per usual) not really paying attention to where/when/how the information they're using is coming to light?

Maybe because of how long I've been in fandom spaces (been ten years! A whole decade!) I've sort of learned to check who exactly I'm getting information from, but I guess no one else really... Learned to do that? I swear, this sudden implosion wouldn't have been happening if people just... Paid attention.

Sorry if this is rambling at all, I'm just... Baffled. I haven't even been sticking around your blog that long (roughly 2-3 months? Maybe longer) but the stuff everyone's getting up in arms about has been *known* to me. I thought everyone else *also* knew this. I've sent a few asks by now, so I've been around the block here.

Anyways. Long ask, hope you don't mind, but it seems you get a lot of long asks. I may dislike some of the things you ship, but... I dunno. I used to ship ZaDr when I was, what, eight or nine? It's pretty baffling, and your guess is as good as mine. It's like no, I've never been (or wanted to be) the place in the Viv critical world you go to talk about Viv's bathtub snakes like they're the worst thing she's ever done. That's down the hall and to the right. I'm the unrepentant monsterfucker who's good at keeping receipts and secrets, and have periodically defended Viv's weirder fictional tastes because I don't think they're that big of a deal.

(If you must know, I'm doing well. I'm living my best life and have a beautiful black king of a boyfriend who graduated med school last year. We will be two years together in March and we talk about our future together often. I've finished my undergrad degree, have a good job preparing college students to study abroad, and my man and I plan to start a family of our own in the next couple of years.

Do not think of me as a zadr legend, think of me as a random girl who just enjoyed shitposting. My life while using this platform wasn't the happiest, but I always enjoyed making art and joking around with the invader Zim fandom on the internet. It was a good run while it lasted. Thank you all.)

Azi's Insanities about Fem ZaDr and Disability.

Let's start with Zim since I've talked about her a little more. So Zim has chronic pain, hypermobility, immunodeficiency, and chronic fatigue syndrome. With her immunodeficiency, she specifically has chronic NK cell deficiency. I've talked about this in relation to her being defective before so I'll skip over that and get to the lesbians. When Zim's habit of ignoring her symptoms and not properly coping with them finally catches up with her she has to rely on care from others, specifically from Dib. She's VERY pissed about the situation but she's too tired and in pain to do much and Dib is very excited to have something new to study. I mean, nothing is more homoerotic than caring for the girl you're in love with and studying her disabilities, biology, and anatomy.

Some things are kind of disability-specific which are intimate and romantic to me that I think they would do as well. Like Dib helping Zim put on warm therapy gel or arnica, them reminding each other to take their meds, Dib setting Zim up in bed or on the couch with pillows so her joints hurt less when she needs to rest or sleep, or Dib helping Zim do things when she's fatigued or has brain fog. Like they're little things but they add dimension to the relationship especially when they have their usual stupid banter while doing them.

Another layer of intimacy with disability between the two has to do with the fact that they're both autistic. They understand what the other is going through during overstimulation or meltdown and they know enough about each other to help. They know when to act as each other's excuse out of a situation and they listen to each other infodump.

Talked about this before under another post, but I think it deserves a post of its own.

Has anyone noticed that Zim is often portrayed differently depending on if he is in ZAGR or ZADR fan works? I'm a ZAGR shipper myself, but I have seen a lot of ZADR content and I see that Zim acts and looks differently in both ships. Even Gaz and Dib act differently depending on the ship.

In ZAGR, Zim is often taller than Gaz by a few inches or a lot taller, has an athletic body like a model or a lightweight boxer, sometimes bigger, dresses and acts very boyish like a punk rock fan and is very, very confident . Gaz in these ships can't seem to decide if she is a badass everyone is afraid of or someone who almost always needs Zim’s help to get out of situations she should be able to handle. Dib acts often in character.

In ZADR, however, Zim is a lot different. He is always shown to be a lot shorter than Dib, and not just in the "Dib is really tall case" but Zim is just short in general. Like, he barely gotten any taller than he usually is. He often dresses gender nonconformingly and acts a lot more....effeminate and submissive? Like he is shown to more 'cute'? And Dib in these ships seems a little more blunt and almost dickish. And Gaz in these ships is usually chill as shit.

For me as a ZAGR shipper, I have both of them be the same height, equal in terms of gender nonconforming in terms of clothes and aesthetics and accessories and strong in their own way. Zim trains in boxing and Gaz is just strong in general. Gaz once showed him to wear eyeliner and he starts wearing it better than her.

Last year, I kept this IZ X TOH au between myself and my best friend, but I kinda wanna talk about it now since @thechaoticlittlejester wanted to revive it and add their ideas too! (They’re rlly smart and cool so follow them :3)

Anywayyy here’s what my idea last year was like

No, it doesn’t take part in the Boiling Isles, it takes place in the normal IZ universe

It’s kinda more like a sequel of invader Zim that takes place 3 years after the Florpus incident, but the characters have personality traits from the TOH characters

All the weird things from Boiling Isles happens on earth

Example: Grom is actually an alien who wanted to kill Zim (because of course it did) and went to Earth to seek revenge coincidentally during Prom in skool!

Humans are still stupid and didn’t really care much about the weird happenings and thought Grom was just some failed science experiment from chemistry class or something

ANYWAY MOVING ONTO MORE ZIMPORTANT DETAILS-

This is a really complicated thing to say buttt- some IZ characters have more than one TOH character role/story

Example: Gaz is mainly in Eda’s place, but also has the character traits and development of Willow’s (because she’s also the reliable one in the story and pretends she isn’t suffering)

And Zim is mainly in Amity’s role, but also has King’s kind of story (like- King thought he was the King of demons when he wasn’t, and Zim thought he was the best invader when he’s actually defective)

(BUT ZIM DOESNT HAVE KING’S *ROLE* BECAUSE THIS IS A ZADR STORY AND DIB IS LUZ IN THIS AU!! HE ONLY HAS KING’S *STORY*)

Like it’s not really your standard [FAVE SHOW] as [OTHER FAVE SHOW] AU! It’s just a fan made Invader Zim sequel with stories based on TOH’S stories! (And this AU is mainly about Gaz, Dib and Zim’s shenanigans)

And of course, it’s really gonna be out of character for Dib and Zim because they’re a lot nicer since they’re in Luz and Amity’s roles kdkedmdkdkdkd

Now time to explain the character roles:

Dib as Luz!

I know Dib as Amity sounds like it makes more sense, but I chose Dib as Luz because they’re both excluded by everyone in skool, they have “weird” interests, and Prof Membrane would probably want to send Dib to a “real science” camp like how Camila wanted to send Luz to the “normal” camp. (Also both Luz and Dib are dorky dorks lolll)

Zim as Amity!

It’s not justtt because of the ZADR as Lumity thing, it’s also because Zim wants to be the Tallests’ “star student” or in this case, star invader. And like how Amity had that amulet that controlled her, Zim’s PAK had a program that made him loyal to the Tallests (which he would break later on). Also, Zim killed Miyuki with a flesh eating BLOB, and that reminds me of abomination goo loll

So in this AU, the Irkens use those kinds of blobs to create weapons (like how the Blight Industries use abomination goo to make abomatons)

Lastly, in this AU, Zim reads to kids. It sounds out of character but I would like to think that over the years, he’s actually great with kids because he’s been dealing with Gir lolll- (also Zim’s a dad to his minions in my heart, shushhhh)

Gaz as Eda! Even tho she takes Eda’s role, she’s still Dib’s younger sister. Anyway, she takes Eda’s role because she’s sassy and acts like she doesn’t care but does. Also, in this AU, Gaz secretly has a curse, and has an uncontrollable pig demon form.

The reason why she kept it a secret is because she knew how crazy Dib is over supernatural / paranormal creatures and is scared that he would reveal it to everyone. (But Dib accidentally kindaaa gave her away to the Swollen Eyeball and had to rescue her— like how Eda was taken away by the Emperor’s Coven and Luz had to save her)

Tak as Hunter!

Tak somehow manages to get out of her janitor job and became the Lavender Guard of the Tallests. She still hates Zim and had that “Amity vs Hunter” fight with her. She’s also still a cringefail depressed emo like Hunter-

Gir as Hooty!

Both Hooty and Gir Are craAAaAaaAzyyyy beings who might secretly be Gods.

Okay seriously though- Gir once possessed Zim’s entire base and made it move around, which is literally like the plot Hooty’s Moving Hassle where Hooty gets possessed and moves around too.

Plus I’d like to think that Gir would wanna prove himself to Zim and make some Tunnel of Love thing like how Hooty did to make ZADR canon! (Except this Tunnel of Love is more disturbing and has literal human hearts. Whose hearts were those? Nobody knows…)

One time I saw somebody's hot take that Zim MUST be a child around Dib's age/'Irken years age equivalent' because otherwise the show would be 'problematic.' Because, the person said, having an adult infiltrate a school and pretend to be a child and be around and interact with children so much is something a gross predator would do. Which...buddy. Come on. They also claimed that the only reason people want Zim to be an adult is because they're also adults and trying to 'justify being sexually attracted to a minor-coded character,' which is at least an uno reverse I hadn't seen before in response to the 'wanting Zim to be a kid to justify shipping him with kids' thing, but...'minor-coded'? Why, because he's short and petty and sometimes a goofy little man?

Oh, really? Are we canceling ZIM now? Did ZIM do something problematic?

Yeah, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard the “short = kid” idea in this fandom, and it’s pretty shitty for a number of reasons.

1. ZIM’s culture discriminates based on height, so when people assume that ZIM must be a child because he’s short, they’re kind of disrespecting him in the same way. There are plenty of perfectly valid reasons to not respect ZIM; his height isn’t one of them.

2. Haven’t these people ever heard of dwarfism? Dwarfs do exist in reality, and they do have sex. Many little people marry and have relationships with people of average height, so implying that anyone who has a crush on someone who’s short is some kind of predator is big yikes.

3. A big part of the show’s humor is how hilariously awful ZIM is at acting like a kid. Assuming that he’s actually a kid when the whole joke of him being at school is that he’s terrible at pretending to be one is missing the joke by a country mile.

It’s also worth pointing out that ZIM’s signature high-pitched voice doesn’t sound that dissimilar from his voice actor, Richard Horvitz, whose voice is so high he’s often mistaken for his own wife on the phone. ZIM’s voice is coming out of an adult man, and while there are a lot of child characters voiced by grown men (including some of Richard Horvitz’s other characters), the man doesn’t sound all that different from ZIM when he’s just talking normally.

Also, I hate to make wild accusations, but claiming people just want to perceive ZIM as an adult to justify attraction speaks of projection to me. I don’t know if everybody making this argument is also a ZaDr shipper, but any ZaDr (or ZaGr) shipper who’s making this argument is pretty sus in my view.

Like, bruh, you’re the ones shipping children. Come on.
