Hi, there's a really good chance I'm imagining things, but isn't there a name/term for when we latch onto "cute"/marketable endangered species and that gives incentive to protect their habitat as well? Like when keeping one animal alive allows for the argument to be made to keep a different "uglier" animal alive, or put resources into protecting a plant species? I could swear there's a name for this but I can't find anything so I could also just be mixing it up with something

The term you're looking for is "Charismatic Megafauna" or and it works in two directions:

People are more likely to identify with a large mammal than say, an ecologically vital insect or slime mold, especially if it's something regarded as "cute" like Pandas or Orcas or Elephants. People give more of a shit about the enviornment and do what you ask if they give a shit about the animal in question.

Picking a Keystone Species at the Very Tippy Top of the food chain (Apex predators like Tigers and Orca), or that needs VAST amounts of space kept pristine (Pandas, Elephants) means that you also have to preserve THE ENTIRE FUCKING FOOD CHAIN UNDERNEATH IT, and by extension, the habitat all them critters live in. So signing a law to protect Penguins protects not just their land nesting sites but the ocean they hunt in and the fish they eat and this protects vastly more species than protecting The-Actually-Load-Bearing-Deep-Sea-Sponges would.

So if you were ever wondering "How come there's all these fundraisers for cute things like giraffes and gorillas? Where's the love for the ugly little guys like freshwater clams and earthworms?" the answer is "RIGHT BEHIND the big sexy poster animal. We sneak them in like hiding your dog's pills in cheese."

ASL brothers HAIKYUU!! AU!!!!!

Day one of Self Indulgent month for me! I love these three, i love haikyuu, i love killer whales!

(The Naval Academy is this au’s version of marines)

For those who dont know, in Haikyuu (and prob in real life too but in my experience its not as important as they make it in the anime) The "Ace" of the team is the person who primarily scores points via spiking. Theyre the Hard Hitter, basically.

Originally, i was gonna make their school mascot just "The Pirates" but i couldnt figure out a clever pun with the school name so i scrapped it in favor of an animal mascot. I figured I would have a wider range of puns that way.

I landed on Orcas as the mascot because I think they really embody a pirate way of life. Theyre strong, hang out in groups of a mix of found family and their actual family, hate the rich, and theyre fun loving! And also im a bit biased because theyre my favorite animal, but hey, i said its self indulgent month, didnt I?

Their school name is a play on the word for Killer Whale (Shachi シャチ) and the word for 'knowledge' (Chishiki 知識), i just smashed the two words together. I'm very proud of myself for coming up with that given i dont speak japanese at all.

Anyway, with their designs, I was taking inspiration from orcas to match the design themes of haikyuu. Ace's hair is bleached on the underside to look like the underside of an orca's body, I made ace and sabo's eyes look more whale-like, the clip in sabo's hair is meant to resemble to spots behind orca's eyes, and I tried to make luffy's hair look more like it's round and spiking down more than i usually do.

Ace is wearing a ''way of the ace" shirt in the first picture, Luffy is wearing a shirt that just says "VOLLEY BALL" because i think it would be funny if he wore a bunch of those Zero-context-poorly-translated-random-english-words shirts that theres a bunch of in Asia. Sabo dyes his hair like delinquents do, but it doesnt much look delinquent~y because of how soft it looks. He means to do it to make him look like a delinquent though. Sabo still has his scars in this au, but he uses his hair, arm braces, and leg braces to cover them up. LUFFY AND ACE HAVE FUNKY SOCKS BECAUSE NO ONE CAN TELL THEM (or me) THEY CANT. Sabo wears athletic socks though because he's a debbie downer. He defends himself saying “It’s practical” and Ace and luffy call him “practically a Debbie Downer.”

Luffy is very good at receiving from growing up with Sabo and Ace practicing setting and spiking with eachother and assigning Luffy as Ball Boy. So he got the libero position from that cuz sabo and ace put in a good word for him. Nepotism.

I didn't feel like coming up with designs for them, but Zoro and Bepo are also on their team (theyre in the fifth image sitting on the right of the line of students). Koala and nami are student managers, Robin is the teacher manager, and Franky is the coach. all other straw hats/luffy friends, rev army comrades, and whitebeard brethren are in the stands. Im trying to keep the ages consistent with how they are in canon.

I didnt do a very in depth research, but i couldnt find what Japanese schools have as mascot costumes. and given no one wears any costumes in haikyuu for their team, i can kind of assume they dont use them over there. But unfortunately for them, I'm American. And part of the backbone of our schooling system, is Vaguely Unsettling Mascot Costumes. My sister says my design for it looks like its from Club Penguin, and i find that delightful. [moment of silence for my billions of fallen Puffles, taken from me in The Shutdown] Anyway.

I thought I was clever coming up with the equivalent of the Marines in this au being a Naval Academy. And their mascot being Seals, famously the animal that gets the absolute Worst Of It from orcas. Get shit onnnnn

Tw: blood and injury

Geno sighed, stretching his tail, if he hadn't eaten such a fat penguin he might have had more energy, but for now the only thing he wanted to do was take a nap, and nobody would stop him. He had chosen a nice iceberg, flat on one side and bumpy enough on the other to prevent any predator sneaking behind his back, that way he could always see what was coming.

He rolled on his stomach, squinting at the horizon, but didn't see anything alarming, so he closed his eyes an allowed himself to relax for a bit.

He woke up with the smell of blood, did a hurt prey land on his iceberg ? He looked around, there wasn't any penguin or other seal, he looked at the water, and saw a black fin under the surface, bearly breaking the tension of the water. An orca. An orca was approaching. He straightened his pose, trying to spot the other ones but it seemed this one was alone. Now, the smell of blood could mean two things: either the orca was hurt, or it just killed a prey and was possibly still hungry and coming for him. Geno hoped it was the first option, if it was hurt, there was a chance for him to outswim it.

The fin poked through the surface, and Geno could see a trail of blood following the beast. Did it drag its prey all the way here ? He didn't want to know, the most important thing for now was finding a way out, but with the orca circling his iceberg, he had to chose his moment perfectly and be fast, which would ask him to do a lot of efforts, that penguin had been really fat after all.

He watched as the orca slowed down, staying near the flat part of the iceberg, aka Geno's only exit. Maybe it wasn't the best iceberg after all. The fin seemed quite small, was it a young one ? Well, the younger it was the less experimented it possibly was, but there would also be a risk that the mother was nearby. Unless it died and that was why the orce was hurt, if hurt it was.

The fin sinked back into the water for a moment, before the orca jumped to partially land on the ice and- it was a mer. It was a skelemer with an orca tail, which did explain why it was so small compared to other orcas. Geno shrinked on himself, the mer didn't seem to have spotted him yet, maybe he could flee now before he attacked ? The mer crawled, exiting the water fully to rest his tail on the ice that soon turned red with blood: a harpoon was impaled in his tail near his caudal fin. That must hurt, but oh well, Geno wasn't going to help, if the orca couldn't swim he couldn't hunt him either.

The seal slowly crawled on the ice, trying to be as silent as possible while keeping an eye on the other mer. He had never seen an orca mer before, this one had the upper body of a skeleton, like himself, and was wearing a black tunic with a hood. The snow cracked under Geno's weight, making the orca turn his head to the noise. Damn fat penguin. None of them moved at first, then the orca talked.

- Oh, I didn't see this iceberg already had an occupant. Well, hope you don't mind sharing then, he sighed, laying down without making another move to approach. My name's Reaper by the way.

Reaper ? That.. was an odd name, why did he tell him that anyway ? He was an orca, he was his predator, he wasn't about to try and befriend him, even if the mer was good-looking and looked too exhausted to hunt him even if Geno was asleep. The seal squinted, trying to examine him from the distance: the harpoon had clearly been shot by land walkers, surely from a boat, Geno hadn't seen boats around here since a few weeks but the orca might have traveled from somewhere else so he couldn't tell how old the injury was, not that he really cared anyway, it was just curiosity. With an injury like that it was likely that the orca had trouble hunting and feeding himself, though he didn't make any move to attack yet so either he had been lucky and had caught a prey before arriving here or the injury was new and he hadn't tried to hunt yet, either way Geno needed to be careful if he was suddenly hungry and decided to jump on him. He should probably go now and not wait any longer. He started to crawl again when Reaper talked.

- Is the hunting good here ? I was thinking about catching a penguin... they're not very fast so it should not be too hard... 

Geno glanced at him, was he really trying to start a conversation with someone who could be his prey ? Reaper glanced back.

- I mean it looks like it's good, you're kinda fat. He stated.

Geno took off his hood instantly, revealing his skull.

- Ex-fucking-cuse me ?! He yelled at the orca.

Reaper shrieked, jumping in surprise and sliding off the ice to fall in the water with a splash. He slowly poked his head out, looking at the mad selkie.

- I'm not fat ! My skin is just thick ! Geno argued.

- I- I'm sorry I didn't know you were a selkie... ! The orca apologized, can I come back on the ice.. ?

What kind of predator was he, seriously ? Asking his prey if he could come back on the ice ? Geno didn't answer, watching him slowly climb back and lay down on the edge, keeping his distances. The wound had started to bleed again with the fall. Didn't he have anyone to take that harpoon off ? Another orca mer or something ? Couldn't he do it himself ?

- I.. I think it's stuck... Reaper said, having noticed Geno staring at the harpoon.

Geno looked back at him.

- Don't you have anyone that can remove it ?

Reaper shook his head.

- There aren't a lot of mers here, and even if there was I doubt they would want to approach me. He sighed, it's okay, I'll live, it'll eventually stop hurting. He stated as he rest his head on his arms.

Geno frowned, he understood that animals wouldn't want to approach an orca, but other mers ? Mers didn't usually eat each other, right ? Why would other mers refuse to help him ? Other orca mers ? And why did he even care ? It wasn't his problem. But... this mer looked tired... 

Geno thought for a moment, he didn't want to approach an orca, even a mer one, but it seemed so rude to just leave him there now that he knew he had nobody to help him. Would he let him help ? Would he just attack him once freed from the harpoon ? It was a risk that needed to be taken in consideration, but, maybe they could make a deal ? In exchange of Geno's help Reaper would swear he wouldn't hurt him either now or in the future ? That could work, that way Geno could make a good action and not feel rude and he wouldn't have to worry about the mer eating him.

- I can help you. He waited for Reaper to look up, But you will have to swear you will not try to attack me after that, and if we ever meet again in the future you will not attack me then either. Basically I keep you from dying and you spare my life, deal ?

Reaper stared, not expecting to hear something like that. What an odd little selkie he had in front of him.

- It's an offer limited in time. Geno added after Reaper's silence. 

The orca thought for a while, should he let the selkie near his injury ? He would eventually heal, maybe find a way to remove the harpoon later, he could even go to one of his fellow Leviathans if really he couldn't do it alone, Dream had good healing magic and Nightmare was precise with his tentacles, they could help. But he would have to swim all the way to their territory, and he already struggled to swim for a few kilometers, and he couldn't turn big as he didn't know how that would affect the injury, if the harpoon would just be stuck inside his tail or if it would dissapear to reappear once he would turn small again, and if it did, would it reappear at the same place ? Would it move ? What if it moved and hit his spine ? He couldn't take the risk. The best option was really letting someone else take care of it, so it meant trusting a possible stranger, which right now was this selkie. Maybe he could accept the deal ? It wasn't like it would be hard to honor, he would just have not to eat him, and he was good with remembering faces so he wouldn't forget, and the seal wasn't a threat anyway, even if he was hurt Reaper still had his magic, he wasn't defenseless. Maybe he should accept, it did hurt quite a lot.

- Make it quick then. He accepted.

Geno nodded, slowly approaching, making sure Reaper was true to his words and wouldn't attack. Once next to him he let his seal skin down a little further to free his arms, now looking more like a mer than a selkie, and carefully grabbed the harpoon, keeping an eye on the orca, but he didn't react. Ideally he would have needed sea weeds to make bandages, but he didn't have any so if he managed to remove the harpoon he would need to use the good old method of pressing on the wound to stop the blood flow. 

- I'm gonna pull on three, three... he strengthened his grip, two... he looked at Reaper, one. He pulled on the harpoon with all of his strength.

The harpoon came out with blood, Geno expected Reaper to at least scream or even faint, but he didn't expect to see a blinding light and almost immediately after see half of the iceberg shatter under the biggest orca mer he had ever seen: one with a translucent glowing blue tail and bones as black as the abyss. Before he could fully processed what he had just witnessed, a massive hand pinned him to the ice and he was staring at two immense sockets he couldn't divert his gaze from.

He had heard so many stories about this giant creature, he had always thought it was but a legend, and yet here it was in front of him: the Leviathan of Death, who he helped remove a harpoon from his tail and made him transform back into his giant form because of the jolt of the sudden pain triggering his magic. Was he going to die ? They had a deal, but did deals even apply to Leviathans ?

Geno didn't have time to say a word as the Leviathan dropped him, turning around and diving back in the water, his fin once again dissapearing under the surface. 

The selkie stayed immobile for a while, his hands firmly gripping the harpoon and his soul racing in his ribcage.

He had just met the Leviathan of Death. He had helped the Leviathan of Death.

How was he supposed to live a normal life now ?

I'm tired of wolf x bunny reader. Like, there's so many other concepts of prey and predador that i never saw someone writing it.

Orca x manatee This is my favorit because one is called an assasin while manatees are just little guys that can't defend themselves, manatees are barely hunted by other animals so i like to think that if they face the orca demi-human they would't reconize the danger.

Naga x mouse/capybara the fact that some anaconda variations can reach 12 METERS while the biggest rat possible is not even 50 cm while capybaras are around 50cm to 62cm . THE SIZE DIFFERENCE.

Polar bear x penguin little fem reader forcing the polar bear to sit on a rock since the males penguins do it to hatch the egg, poor guy confuse and scared to crack it

Owl/Hawk/eagle x mouse/small bird/bats An big ass bird with a hummingbird/bat reader or a little mouse attached on the big bird back as they fly.

Take orcas: while there are now less than ten left in Britain’s only permanent (and non-breeding) resident population, around 250 years ago the English [...] naturalist John Wallis gave this extraordinary account of a mass stranding of orcas on the north Northumberland coast [...]. If this record is reliable, then more orcas were stranded on this beach south of the Farne Islands on one day in 1734 than are probably ever present in British and Irish waters today. [...]

Other careful naturalists from this period observed orcas around the coasts of Cornwall, Norfolk and Suffolk. I have spent the last five years tracking down more than 10,000 records of wildlife recorded between 1529 and 1772 by naturalists, travellers, historians and antiquarians throughout Britain and Ireland, in order to reevaluate the prevalence and habits of more than 150 species [...].

In the early modern period, wolves, beavers and probably some lynxes still survived in regions of Scotland and Ireland. By this point, wolves in particular seem to have become re-imagined as monsters [...].

The capercaillie is another example of a species whose decline was correctly recognised by early modern writers. Today, this large turkey-like bird [...] is found only rarely in the north of Scotland, but 250–500 years ago it was recorded in the west of Ireland as well as a swathe of Scotland north of the central belt. [...] Charles Smith, the prolific Dublin-based author who had theorised about the decline of herring on the coast of County Down, also recorded the capercaillie in County Cork in the south of Ireland, but noted: This bird is not found in England and now rarely in Ireland, since our woods have been destroyed. About Acheron as a orca hybrid, it does seem right for her to be a transient orca!, however my question lays on, how would Vet! Reader feel about Acheron’s diet? Since orcas need lots of food to keep swimming and hunting they either need foods such as Sea lions, Elephant seals, penguins and even sometimes great white shark livers or TONS of fish to even get to the level of protein they need, they also require lots of ice if they are being kept in a pool for a designated time but would Vet! Reader feel icky about having to feed orca Acheron dead penguins and such?

Orcas are my biggest hyperfixation so seeing Orca mentions in here was a surprise!

In my Animal Hybrid AU, there are regular animals and hybrids that coexist in the world. Hybrids are your typical half human, half animal kind of species, and regular animals are self explanatory, as they’re the animals we have in the real world. Carnivorous hybrids are able to hunt regular animals for their diet, so when Vet! Reader goes to feed Orca! Acheron, she feeds her regular animals like fish, seal meat, etc. animals who aren’t hybrids are typically eaten by hybrids anyways.

The Vet does not feel guilty, carnivores need to eat meat so she feeds them meat. She just doesn’t feed Acheron any fish/seal/penguin hybrids for her own ethical morals. In the wild though, it should be noted that hybrids can hunt other hybrids as it’s not considered cannibalism for them. It’s mostly for dire survival situations that they will turn to other hybrids for meat, but they typically opt to feast on regular animals instead. Humans are also banned from consuming hybrids, they stick to eating regular animals.

Anyways to summarize everything, the Vet doesn’t feel guilty. Acheron can eat all the fish and meat she wants 😋

Hands on. He wants this so bad, so when the opportunity comes he’s desperate to be a good dad.

He’s read every book available. Listened to every podcast he can get his hands on. Taken classes on childcare and CPR.

Nest. NEST FOR THE CHILD. It is non negotiable. Baby sleeps with you both in your nest until old enough that Sans is reasonably confident they won’t die without constant supervision.

If you’re nursing, he’s got a constant streamline of snacks and water for you. If you’re using formula, he’s happy to take over feeding shifts so you can sleep.

Gets fast with diaper changes. Like, you have to wonder if there’s a world record because he’s so fast the baby doesn’t even register they’re missing pants.

Weaves a personal swaddle blanket for the baby using his own threads.

Toddler stage he’s taking them out for swimming lessons on the daily. If they’ve inherited his moth side, he’ll swap it out for flying. Exercise is an important developmental aspect and he won’t skimp out on it.

Lazy! Cuddle! Sundays! Or whichever day you also have off. It’s a day dedicated to constant snuggles in the family home. No leaving. No cooking. No chores. Just constant physical affection and play.

When the child is big enough to rough house, Sans is ready to play. Orcas love playing with their pods, and one of his favorite games is chase! If his kid shows interest in being the predator he’s happy to play dead every so often.

But the kid DOES have to work for it. He won’t give it freely.

If you have a demanding job, he’ll take a career in education so he has more free time to spend with them. If you want to stay at home / take a more freeing job then he’ll take a career in science with Wingding.

He’s on the PTA. He will fight any Karen or Chad who gets in the way of his kid’s education.

(He and Wingdings will join forces as need be in this regard. Education is very important to both of them. And Wingding lowkey loves the tea.)

Sometimes he likes to tease you about the drama. It’s cute seeing his little penguin get riled up.

“You cannot eat Billy’s Mom, Sans.”

“what if billy’s mom deserves it?”

“She’s just doing what she thinks is best for the children.”

You sign to Wingding for help. He shrugs and signs, “He’s not wrong.”

He jokes but he won’t do anything that could jeopardize his kid’s life.

Little bit of a helicopter parent. Not in a restrictive way, but in a I need you to be honest and tell me where you are at all times way. He’s mostly supportive of whatever the kid wants to do and doesn’t care for curfews, just as long as he knows where his kid (and obviously it’s not a super dangerous area).

Although he won’t let his kid sleep over at someone else’s place. Too risky.

Wingding as a grandpa?

Oooooh. . . He doesn’t know how to deal with kids. He needs a lot of practice. The first time the baby cries in his arms, he is devastated.

You have to repeatedly reassure him it’s not him personally; the baby just needs to get to know him!

Wingding takes this to mean he has to visit daily to see the baby. Sans is Not Happy.

But Wingding knows the way to keep Sans at bay is through you, so he always brings your favorite treats as a bribe.

First time baby smiles at Wingding, he is struck by such overwhelming cute aggression he has to hand the baby back to you so he can excitedly sign.

If you get him a Best Grandpa mug he drinks from it daily.

At babbling stage, Wingding loves to listen to them talk. He nods along to everything they say even though he doesn’t understand a word of it.

When the child is big enough to go to school, Wingding will occasionally take them out of school as a surprise day trip to the movies.

So! Many! Books! The child will never want for books. Monthly grandpa/grandbaby trips to the bookstore.

You essentially have a permanent free babysitter whenever you and Sans need time to yourselves.

He loves them.

answering the age old question of why i hate pesos mother 🤑 (this is also an excuse to yap about the great penguin race)

number one:

assuming you have watched tgpr then you know that peso did NOT sign up it was his mother and pinto who did.

why?? why did they have to go behind his back to do it?? why didn’t they ask peso about this??

like brother you are signing up your kid for the PENGUIN OLYMPICS and you don’t get his input?? did she just not gaf about how her son would feel about this 😭

neither pinto nor his mother gave a flying fugly fart about if peso would wanna participate which is odd considering HES THE ONE PARTICIPATING and considering this doesn’t seem like something peso would want to do.

okay so maybe i could get past that but no pinto and his mother just had to go and surprise peso with ts???

shockingly the first event goes horribly for peso since hes extremely unprepared and so he lands in that bigass pile of snow so pinto and his mum run over

and you might think “oh is she gonna comfort peso?”

no.

no comfort, no “you did great” all she says is

“peso you’ll catch a cold”

YOU LIVE IN THE SNOW?? THATS IS THE LAST THING THAT SHOULD BE ON YOUR MIND ARE YOU DUMB????????

then she says nothing else and walks away not even a “good luck” like girl do you have any sort of empathy for your kid?

number five:

ok this is more yapping about the race itself but it ties into my point.

so i cannot be the only one who thinks this race is like extremely dangerous not in the extreme sports way but in the extreme lack of safety precautions

some examples include multiple animals in the water where the swimming races take place, its because that there’s other animals that peso and hugo get stuck under the ice

now this is not me blaming pesos mother for them getting trapped because no one saw it coming but you would think shed put more thought into sending her child into the olympics yk

also there are literally predators in the water LIKE THERES AN ORCA THEY EAT PENGUINS ITS IN AN EPISODE IN ABOVE AND BEYOND RIGHT??? LIKE I SWEAR THERES ONE WHERE PESO AND PINTO ALMOST GET EATEN BY ORCAS??

heres the aforementioned orca btw

also there is ZERO first aid or rescue teams at all like if the octonauts hadn’t been there to rescue peso and hugo they likely would’ve run out of air by the time a rescue team arrived

considering they watch the race every year pesos mum had to have known this and intentionally or not she put her son in danger because of her decisions.

conclusion:

i really dislike pesos mum due to her stupid decisions she made and her frankly concerning lack of consideration for her son’s feelings. considering we never see her again. there’s no real redeeming qualities for her for me, atleast.

want to redesign some fr dragons to look more like animals... ever since starting my studies I've found i havea few issues with the designs for stupid reasons. fathoms (right now) specially bother me by the fact theyre described as gentle (amphibian) giants but also land/sea explorers. I feel like the world of flight rising would be so much nicer if the concept of niches was more widely used. Amphibians cant live in salty waters, and that doesn't mean they can stay outside water for long periods of time. I based this design off leopard seals, orcas and manta rays. 100% not entirely happy with it, lots for me to fix, but i enjoy the overall shape so far. Please don't take this as me harshly criticizing the game or designs, I'm just annoying and like making fictional creatures reflect their world more or less. I just wanted to make fathoms reflect their diet and the few described niches.

some of my design notes: Very fat guys who can go deep to the ocean floor to hunt. I also wanted their wings to look like this so they can't fly outside water-- they do breach and can glide on water like a manta ray would, and they have lungs like a while or dolphin and can hold their breath for long periods of time, enough to comfortably rest underneath high pressure waters. They also enjoy sun bathing on rocks, like seals, and their legs are rarely used and very small and in the back of their body, slowly fusing to the tail and becoming part of it. They are too heavy to really fly, as they are primarily composed of fat that keeps them warm in the water, but they can stay for up to four hours on land without consequence, thought they tend to stick close to the ocean. They explore nearby forests but are clumsy, and their size impedes them from going long distances where trees are too close together. They don't tend to venture far, as they get tired very fast.

Their diet consists of jellyfish, giant squid, fish, krill, penguins, and even the occasional deer, elk, and moose that tend to venture close to the ocean.

Behold: A Fold Penguin!

Thanks to Marisha in the first episode of Moonward, penguins now exist in the Midst cosmos. Taking the transcript cues of "quite large" and "cattle animals" I have decided that they are big & agreeable enough to ride, when trained properly. Seen here featuring a grown-up Tzila, living her biologist dream, ready for takeoff!

Notes & additional sketches under the cut:

Native to the Mediun, flightless during the day but able to fly/swim the Fold at night

Reliable transit between Fold-bound islets for a rider, but with significant risk for islet with any time in the Un since the penguin would drop from the sky when the Fold recedes

Stark coloration serves as camouflage when briefly diving up into the Un to avoid Fold predators or to hunt; from above they look like Fold and from below they blend in with mica

Spots of bright iridescent feathers on their caps serve to attract and herd Fold prey, and also function as false eyes to fool predators like blinders into thinking they are too large to pursue

Less dense plumage than earth penguins, able to poof their feathers out at night and sleek them down during the day to adapt to the big temperature swings.

The position of their feathers also affects their perceptible color, shifting between ruddy to dark on top and iridescent to dull grey on the underside, creating the most favorable coloring for the day/night environment. They can puff and smooth the feathers to "flash" the iridescence while hunting or to communicate with each other.

They have a variety of favored prey in the Un and the Fold, including mirrorhawks, which they catch when they stray into the Fold or by diving upward into the Un to snatch them like an orca going after a seagull.

Their stomachs are able to break down a fair amount of mica and bocular mechanics consider them an annoyance for swallowing metal odds and ends to aid in the digestion process.

A/N: I really don't have to say this at this point, but once again, this is more self-indulgence, specifically of the sugary sweet, tooth-rotting fluff kind. The reader and Eclipse being parents to baby Sun and Moon has been spinning my brain endlessly! I just had to write a little something for this off-shoot of Apex Polarity. Speaking of, I recommend reading Apex Polarity first and then returning to this; I believe it will enhance your enjoyment of this fic!

Just a little note is that the reader is female and will be referred to with female terms/titles such as mother. PARROTFISH?? ORCA?? ADELIE PENGUIN?! I’m going crazy. Parrotfishes are beautiful, but is Kokomi a rainbow parrotfish or a princess parrotfish. My personal opinion is princess parrotfish but you do you. Orcas are AWESOME!! Largest species of dolphin, smart hunters, big as a fricking BUS! Love the idea of Orca! Yelan. Fits basically perfectly. Adelie penguins are so cute and beautiful. I actually have worked with adelie penguins at when I first started working with many different types of birds at the zoo I work at. Overall 11/10 choices for animals. And may I suggest..Peregrine Falcon! Raiden? (Your choice tho)

I definitely think that Kokomi fits a princess parrotfish! Mostly because the colors fit very well with her and Kokomi is a princess in my eyes 😍

I’m so glad you like Orca! Yelan. I was trying to think of an ocean animal that would fit her and the Orca instantly came to mind with how dangerously intelligent they are. I can imagine her toying with the Vet and enjoying the way she squeaks in nervousness whenever she swims too close during feeding. Silly human, if Yelan wanted to kill you she would’ve done so already 😊 (probably one of the scariest hybrids of the sanctuary imo)

Also Adelie Penguin! Skirk was too funny to pass up because I love the idea that she’d be a tiny, ferocious penguin that will attack anyone she deems annoying. Not the Vet though, Skirk enjoys the Vet so much, she even courts her when it’s mating season by giving her a pebble and smirking because she thinks she’s so suave. Heh, she’s sooooo clever. The Vet will swoon for her pebble for sure!

As for Ei…hm. I actually wasn’t sure what animal to assign her, but I must say that a Peregrine Falcon is an interesting choice. I wonder what made you think to assign her as Falcon, as I don’t remember any details that relate to one :0

But I love the idea of more avian women so Peregrine Falcon! Ei is a version I will happily accept!
