thoughts on villain whump?
I absolutely love villain whump. When a character has done truly terrible things and thinks they deserve all the hurt and the torment they get, but someone, sometimes even a total stranger, still insists that 'no one deserves this' and tries to help them? Hhhhhhhhhh
Or maybe, even with all of their crimes, the villain doesn't believe they deserve the pain they're put through. They acknowledge their whumper is taking things too far, but what can they do about it? Who would help them?
Villain whump can be hard to write. In my opinion, villain whump should meet at least one of the following criteria:
1. Whumpee is directly antagonistic to the main characters; getting in the way of their goals or deliberately sabotaging or trying to hurt them.
What makes this so good: whumpee struggling with immense guilt brought on by being helped by someone they've hurt in the past; Enemies-to-Friends; conflicting morals/goals; gut-wrenching epiphanies of "what have I done?"; small, whispered "you shouldn't have saved me"s
2. Whumpee is a villain by societal standards: caretaker/other characters wouldn't necessarily be wrong for leaving the villain or turning them in for the sake of their own safety.
What makes this so good: whumpee unable to turn anywhere for help; whumpee actively on the run from police/other law enforcement; despair when the public seems to revel in their pain; actions being misinterpreted even when they try to do the right thing; quiet "why did you save me"s and "don't you realize who I am"s
3. Whumpee's morals are skewed in some way. (ie. they've hurt people for selfish reasons and have no regrets.)
What makes this so good: conflicted caretakers; warring morality; "why would you do that"s and "you should've left me if you know what's good for you"s; complicated recoveries and relationships; insistent "you didn't deserve it"s;
As for my own characters, I don't think I have any whumpees who fit the "innocent victim" mold. I definitely prefer writing characters with complicated pasts, values, and morals, because I enjoy how it colors their perspectives. (Not that there's anything wrong with purely innocent whumpees, and I've definitely seen plenty that I loved as characters, I just don't write many of them)
That being said, Cerus is my only "true villain" whumpee (aka, a character who fits all three of my personal criteria). Technically Uriah counts, but he didn't start out with whumpee intentions sooo

is 'The Mark Side' episode 2 ever coming out ? You know, the 'Amazing Digital Circus' is already having episode 2 but 'The Mark Side' came out years ago and still no episode 2. :|
There is no set release date for episode 2 and I can't currently give one unfortunately, as much as i'd like to. Just know it's being worked on! 💖
But I can say though, Glitch (who is behind TADC's production) is a studio with lots of employees, whilst I am a single person who is managing every single aspect of my production myself. So I don't consider the two shows equivalent when it comes to their productions. TMS also has one animator, who is also myself. I'm not able to keep up with the pace of other productions because I am truly independent, the only additional crew are the (very talented) voice actors and a couple writers, most of whom also are also actors on the show.
I would absolutely love to get additional help but it's not exactly easy to find people willing to assist in things like this merely for the hobby of it. So my stance (at least for the time being,) is that if I have the ability to do the job, I'm going to do it, whether I like doing it or not, and I plan to stick to this logic until hypothetically TMS generates an actual profit that doesn't just go into funding the aspects I cant do. Which it is FARRR from. (episode 2 also technically has little/no budget, as the few aspects that are paid I fund myself) Essentially everyone currently working on it is doing it because they wanted to contribute, not just as another job.
I do plan to run a crowdfunding campaign after episode 2 is released and has been out for while to get 3 funded, and if it goes according to plan and then some, it shouldn't take nearly as long as episode 2 took. And if it fails, i'll still make it but it'd likely take just as long. (and be like, really really disappointing and demotivating) But that's something that'd be quite a while away, I'm trying to focus on what's going on in the present.
It is my absolute goal in life to be able to get TMS to a point where I can hire on additional crew members and be self sustainable like other successful indie productions but I'm nowhere near that point. Only time will tell if the whole show will be able to fully get to the finish line. I really hope it does. It's what I've been aiming for for 8 years now.

MANIA is so much like folie that it blows my mind that people who love folie hate on mania. like, they’re the same breed of people who would go to folie shows and boo the songs. they’re the same type of people who were commenting shit like “new fob sucks” in 2008. you cant tell me pete didnt predict this when he wrote “even the young ones become irrelevant, they always bring up how you’ve changed” BACK ON FOLIE!! anyway i love mania AND ioh AND their sisters smfs and folie equally. if ab/ap and mania didnt exist, smfs wouldnt exist and thats my controversial take for the day sorry to hijack ur askbox like this!
you are once again ABSOLUTELY right on every single count! It’s always been the case with fall out boy that they release a new album and some part of the fanbase loses their shit, calls fob either sellouts or that they changed their sound too much. literally every single album. but folie and mania, as pete said, were so much more experimental and raw and different to everything else happening that the reaction was even bigger.
and definitely true with ab/all and srar and mania - people who are praising stardust but hated or continually put down these albums really are missing a huge piece of the picture that made stardust so beautiful.
and if people are straight up hating on stardust because it’s ‘not like the old stuff’ WELL. the old stuff has been gone for 10+ years bro. there IS no ‘old fall out boy’ because they’ve ALWAYS been a band marked by growth and change in their sound. and listen to ANY of the interviews where they talk about NOT wanting a throwback and NOT wanting to do that again. move the fuck on it’s not coming back!

i saw u reblogged some asks so whats ur fave childhood memory?!?! :3
oooh had to think about this one :)
not sure if age 12 counts as too old for childhood but on the night before halloween that year, my dad asked me if i wanted to go TP a family friend's house and we snuck out in the middle of the night and went to walmart and got silly string and streamers and TP and then we decorated their house and the next morning everybody was trying to figure out who did it and it was just my dad's secret with me, i know it sounds weird that THAT'S my favorite memory 😂 but my dad and i never really got along for years and i remember that night we were laughing and running around and that was kind of the start of things changing.

👽 AUs
Dude are you KIDDING??? I love AUs so much that back before I shortened my alias to not be an embarrassing Google Translate mishap, a running joke with my friends was (in the voice of "randy your sticks") NEGAU YOUR AU!!!!!
I'm a sucker for them. I love them. ESPECIALLY ones that stick guys from one fandom in the universe of another. My Madoka AU for the Evangelion kids is my precious baby brain child that I will cherish for the rest of forever and hopefully one day actually finish a fic or doujin or SOMETHING of. Bonus points if I can take the lore and fucking run with it like we're doing with the FFXV guys in Pokémon :^)
👨‍👨‍👧‍👧 fankids
Again: are you kidding? Not to put an RP partner on blast here, but @novuscaelum is a joy for me to interact with and bounce off of. Fankids are great! Just...with the caveat that it's mostly (not entirely but mostly) on the fankid to make sure that they're not forcing the parent to compromise too much on their portrayal. A little give and take on both ends makes for a happy RPing, but chances are if you're the fankid, you came up with your OC based on some preconceived notions you have about the canon parent(s) which you may not share with the person you're writing with. TL;DR: Communication is key!
🗝 selectiveness in the RPC
I think there's a tendency to equate selectiveness with elitism, which. It's just Not. People have boundaries, and it's important to make your own clear and respect those of others. I've been the person who didn't get followed back or got softblocked before, and it sucks!! I know it does!! But nobody on this website owes you RP interactions, and for every one person that passes on you, there will be five others that are more than willing to write with you.
🥂 my favorite part of the canon
I'll go with KH since that's one of my main things right now and you didn't specify LOL /nm
It's hard to pick one favorite thing no matter how I interpret this question. I could go with meta-wise what's my favorite thing about KH as a series, or in-universe what's my favorite plot beat, lore, etc. I'll go with the latter interpretation for the purposes of this meme, and for KH...one of my favorite things is how very not chosen one Sora is. The story goes out of its way to say that Sora is an ordinary kid who likes taking naps on the beach and is content with his life on the islands, if anything mostly going along with Riku's hunger to see what else is out there. For fuck's sake, the Kingdom Key was meant to be RIKU'S at first, and it chose his heart instead in the wake of what happened to the Islands. "I know that the Keyblade didn't choose me, and I don't care. I'm proud to be a small part of something bigger — the people it did choose."
The fact that he's just a kid who, through sheer force of will and desire to protect what matters to him, strong armed his way into being the hero is way more powerful than the Chosen One trope will ever be, in my humble opinion. It's why I'm so scared of the murmurs of theories that Sora will have some grand ties to some UX / ML era characters or be reincarnated or some shit, that would be such a massive shit on everything that the previous games set up and I hope to GOD it doesn't end up happening.

For the irl friends thing. Depends what the signs are. There's not any context but If its truly things that don't mean anything or small then they shouldn't have to lie about how they think. Then again do they know the person you're interested in. maybe they don't trust the person. Are their intents malicious? Jelousy? Or genuinely concern ect. Decided to ask since I'm the type of person who believes a real friend tells it to you to how it is and I also have a friend who would rather i feed their delusions and i can't understand it myslef. Thanks
I think that's why I got annoyed at them, because they were basing things off not having any context anyways. Neither of them are on tumblr so they don't understand the logistics of the site and tbh they're pretty mistrustful about online relationships as a whole. They have seen me go through breakups In The past so I don't think their intentions are malicious in nature (and I'd never believe that about them after everything they've both done and continue to do for me) but since I'm quite a rational person too, I feel like sometimes I don't want to hear what I have already thought about. Whatever they say is nothing New in this regard. Not to mention they don't know the person in question, and I can't explain the context in a way they'll understand since they're not on Tumblr.
I think a little bit of unrealistic nature is ok sometimes, I think you need it. Love does make you a little delusional sometimes, that's what it's nature is. I think as long as you're not feeding into it too much there's nothing to worry about. Maybe your delusion is more close to the truth than you realize.
But like, if I'm excited about talking about this person and they fire back telling me they don't feel the same then regardless it's quite hurtful. Maybe they didn't intend that but intentional and actions don't always align. Sometimes it's ok to just let someone be excited. Life is so damn short, way too short to be trampling all over whatever small joys we have.

Based roughly on this old post.
Bonus:

[Leo is taking the fact that he was born biologically female simultaneously very well and also not so well but overall he’s mostly coping with the fact that it was Draxum that just essentially gave him the turtle equivalent of ‘The Talk’.]

godddddd i have disliked becky chambers' work since long way to a small angry planet and I agree that that fish scene is SO much of what is wrong with contemporary SFF especially queer SFF. refreshing take, great review, thank you. would love to hear what authors or works you think of as the antidote to that sensibility.
The thing is, I enjoyed The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet when I first read it - it was a fun, light adventure, clearly a debut novel but I was excited to see where Chambers would go from there. And I actually really do think the sequel, A Closed and Common Orbit, was good! It did interesting things with AI personhood and identity.
... and then Chambers just kinda. Did not get better. She settled into a groove and has a set number of ideas that I feel like she hasn't broken out of, creatively. And they I M O kind of rest on an assumption that "human nature" = "how people act in suburban California."
As an antidote to that sensibility, I'd say... books where people have a real interrelationship with the land they inhabit, a sense of being present, and reciprocal obligations to that land; books that recognize that some things can never be taken back once done; books with well-drawn characters, where people have strong opinions deeply informed by their circumstances, that can't always be easily reconciled with others, and won't be brushed aside; books where these character choices matter, they impact each other, they cannot be easily gotten over, because people have obligations to each other and not-acting is a choice too.
And it's only fair that after all day of being a Hater I should rec some books I really did like.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - A man lives alone in an infinite House, over an equally infinite ocean. Captures the feeling that I think Monk & Robot was aiming for. Breathtaking beauty, wonder at the world, philosophy of truth, all that good stuff, and actually sticks the landing. The main character's love, attention, and care to his fantasy environment shows through in every page. (Fantasy, short novel)
Imperial Radch by Ann Leckie - An AI, the one fragment remaining of a destroyed imperial spaceship, is on a quest for revenge. Leckie gets cultural differences and multiculturalism, and conversely, what the imposition of a homogeneous culture in the name of unity means. (Space sci-fi, novel trilogy)
Machineries of Empire by Yoon Ha Lee - An army captain's insubordination is punished by giving her a near-impossible mission: to take down a rebelling, heretical sect holing up in a space fortress and defying imperial power. She gets a long dead brain-ghost of a notorious criminal downloaded into her head to help. Very, very good at making you feel like every doomed soldier was a person with a past, with a family, with feelings, with hopes and dreams and frustrations and favorites and preferences and reasons to live, right before they brutally die in a space war. Also very much about the imposition of homogeneity of culture as a force of imperialism. (Space sci-fi, novel trilogy)
The Fortunate Fall by Cameron Reed - Maya Andreyevna is a VR journalist in high-tech dystopian future Russia, and she decides to investigate the truth that the government doesn't want her to. She might die trying. It's fine. Also has digital brain-sharing, this time in a gay way. It's bleak. It's sad. It feels real. Not making a choice is a choice. Backing out is a choice. And choices have consequences. Choices reverberate through history. About responsibility. (Cyberpunk, novel)
The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez - Nia Imani is a spaceship captain, a woman out of time, a woman running from her past, and accidentally adopts a boy who has a strange power that could change the galaxy. Spaceship crew-as-found-family in the most heartbreaking of ways. Also about choices, how the choices you make and refuse to make shape you and shape the world around you. How the world is always changing around you, how the world does not stay still when you're gone, and when you come back you're the same but the world has moved on around you. About how relationships aren't always forever, and that doesn't mean they weren't important. About responsibility to others. It's a slow, sad book and does not let anyone rest on their laurels, ever. There is no end of history here. Everything is always changing, on large scales and small, and leaving you behind. (Space sci-fi, novel)
Dungeon Meshi / Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui - A D&D style fantasy dungeon crawl that stops to think deeply about why there are so many dungeons full of monsters and treasure just hanging around. Here because it's an example of an author thinking through her worldbuilding a lot, and it mattering. Also because of the characters' respect for the animals they are are killing and eating, their lives and their place in the ecosystem, and the ways that humans both fuck up ecosystems with extraction and tourism, but also the ways that you can have reciprocal relationships of responsibility and care with the ecosystem you live in, even if it's considered a dangerous one. (Fantasy, manga series)
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang and How Long 'Til Black Future Month by N. K. Jemisin and Everyone on the Moon is Essential Personnel by Julian K. Jarboe - Short story anthologies that were SO good and SO weird and rewired the way I think. If you want the kind of stuff that is like, the opposite of easy-to-digest feel-good pap, these short stories will get into your brain and make you consider stuff and look at the world from new angles. Most of them aren't particularly upbeat, but there's a lot of variety in the moods.
"Homecoming is Just Another Word for the Sublimation of the Self," "Calf Cleaving in the Benthic Black," and "Termination Stories for the Cyberpunk Dystopia Protagonist" by Isabel J. Kim - Short stories, sci-fi mostly, that twist around in my head and make me think. Kim is very good at that. Also about choices and not-making-choices, about going and staying, about taking the easy route or the hard one, about controlling the narrative.
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells - Security robot with guns in its arms hacks itself free from its oppressive company, mostly wants to half-ass its job but gets sucked into drama, intrigue, and caring against its better judgement. This is on here because 1) I love it 2) I feel like it does for me what cozy sff so frequently fails to do - it makes me feel seen and comforted. It's hopeful and compassionate and about personal growth and finding community and finding one's place in the world, without brushing aside all problems or acting like "everybody effortlessly just gets along" is a meaningful proposal. also 3) because it is one of the few times I have yet seen characters from a hippie, pacifistic, eco-friendly, welcoming, utopian society actually act like people. The humans from Preservation are friendly, helpful, and motivated by truth and justice and compassion, because they come from a friendly, just, compassionate society, and they still actually act like real human beings with different personalities and conflicting opinions and poor reactions to stress and anger and frustration and fear and the whole range of human emotions rather than bland niceness. Also 4) I love it (space sci-fi, novella series mostly)
