The Bug (Paranoid Delusions)

Every light in the apartment was on Finally getting rid of these goddamn shadows And I’m searching through every room Double checking Triple checking That I find whatever it is that they planted Delusions of terrified grandeur

It’s not what was expecting when she got home I’d been honest with her, and she said she could handle it but she finds me in our bedroom Clothes thrown out, the drawers for the dresser in a pile by the bed the mattress is leaning up against the wall You’ve got to be thorough in your search or there’s no point in doing it all

She asks me what I’m doing and all I can do is grunt the word bugs my focus and interest now taking the light bulb from the socket She stares confused until it clicks that some days, I wasn’t exaggerating and that I was a handful and sometimes I do things that don’t make and some days I’m paranoid

It wasn’t all just voice and shadow people It’s the ritualistic deconstruction of our apartment She sighs, only now understanding what she signed up for I tried to tell her, but words never can covey the fear in her eyes as I take another outlet cover off the wall with a butcher knife and she asks if can have the knife and without thinking, just an instinct I place it in her hands The covers are all off, I don’t need it anymore

She asks if I found any and I shake my head vigorously I haven’t yet but I know I will and she engages conversation and logical thoughts and I’m breathing normal again and with a quick glance around I apologize

And even has I put our apartment back together I keep looking for the bug
