For children my rec would be the Pages & Co. series by Anna James, and for adults I’d recommend anything by Stacey Halls and Jay Kristoff... The Four Winds was the most depressing book I have ever read. However, I did like the way the book ended, and the 5 stars reflect that. I would recommend but be prepared for some hard times.

Author Spotlight: Kristin Hannah

This past week one of my favorite authors released her new novel, and my Instagram timeline BLEW UP. On publishing day Hannah reached out to her base and implored everyone to share their thoughts and more importantly their pictures with the book. Every reviewer, reader, history lover were reading and reviewing this new novel... including myself.

I even got in on the action. Despite my busy schedule with soccer and school I posted about it on my Instagram story the moment I finished the book.

Kristin Hannah writes fiction masterpieces and her new one is no exception. She’s a New York Times Best Selling Author, most famous for her WWII novel The Nightingale. Which is getting its own film adaptation starring the Fanning Twins. Her novel Firefly Lane was just given a mini series adaption on Netflix.

But let’s talk about this book that has the historical fiction community hyped. 

The last time Hannah released a historical fiction novel it was one of the best of the genre. It currently is my favorite WWII novel, and trust me the majority of my shelving is taken up by books in that genre. 

I was so excited to get my hands on The Four Winds because the inspiration behind it was Dorothea Lange’s photography of the Great Depression.

The Four Winds a story about a mother who finds herself fending for her two young children in Northern Texas, the heart of the dust bowl. This book is painfully, brutally, honest in it’s imagery and storytelling. There is no romanticism here.

Much like The Nightingale this novel is a testament of the woman resolve when times get tough. At its center it is a story about family. For someone like me who normally reads historical fiction with romantic elements, this was a detour into realism I didn’t know I needed to take. 

If you are looking to get into historical fiction i would recommend reading Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale first and then delving into The Four Winds. 

These two novels are the epitome of historical fiction and I so dearly hope that Hannah will continue writing in the genre because she has a gift.

You can find both of the novels at Target or your favorite book store.

Believe me when I say that these two novels are on my ‘favorites’ shelf, as I’m sure is the same for many many lovers of historical fiction.

Today marks the 500th post on Bargain Sleuth Book Reviews! Who would have thought when I started this blog during the pandemic that the pandemic, and this blog, would still be going strong nearly two years later? Want to know what my most popular post is?
